The news from the bridge is that the passage so far is clear, but you have other things to worry about. Such as the briefing holo that is taking a while to load.

'Lieutenant,' you say, 'the module is, uh-'

Oh wait, wait. No, there it is now. The symbol of your homeland and your nation. You stand up and salute, and a disembodied voice sounds.

'At ease, Captain.'

'One of the moons...'

Aww, shit.

'... Davaris III-A.'

'Davaris... oh, Davaris III-A, sir?'

'The same. Is there a problem?'

'No sir. I understand, sir.'

'Good. There has been an uprising in the area, against the Dominion authorities, and you have been dispatched to quell it. This is your first mission as a flag officer, if I recall correctly.'

The Emblem dissipates, and now you are left alone in the Command Module. Well, here it is. You have your orders, you have your location, and you've got a battle, presumably, on your hands. You sit down.

'Navigation?'

'Yes, Captain.'

'Do you have the coordinates file?'

'Yes, Captain, we are...' but then someone buzzes you in the Command Module, and you turn around as it opens. In the opening stands a woman, dressed in full uniform, who frowns at you.

'Captain, are you giving orders to my Navigation?'

Ugh. Not this again. Thing is, you are the 'Captain' of the landing force, while this woman here is the Captain of this ship. Another round in the battle between the Fleet and the Terrestrial Forces, though at least in this case your opponent is quite attractive.

'Well, I would appreciate it if you made the requests through me.'

'I would too, Captain. And if you will explain to Command that I've disappeared from a briefing in order to look for the *actual* captain, I'll appreciate that too.'

She stares hard at you for a while, before sighing. 'Fine. Davaris III-A it is, isn't it?'

'Yes, Captain. The file is already uploaded.'

'Navigation,' she speaks into her shoulder comms. 'You heard the Terrestrial Force Commander.' Then she turns to you. 'Captain?'

'Yes, Captain?'

'I suppose you should probably go brief the people you actually command, then.'

This ship's cargo bay is where your jurisdiction actually is. You haven't been given much of a force, to be honest - but you'll make the best of them, of course. That's what command is about in the Human Dominions.

The core of your force comprises two regiments - the 332nd and 639th Combined Regiments, each about 3,000 strong and capable of functioning independently. But you also had the option, before you set off, to bolster your forces with other more... specialised units.

> Okay, since no votes...

Foreseeing the possibility of urban fighting in an industrial area, you know you want an engineer battalion. And as for the other thing you could bring along, well... you think it'd be better to have more mobile artillery.

As you close in to an intersect course with Davaris III-A, you think this is probably a good call. Intelligence is reporting that the uprising is getting more organised, and is working to take over the Industrial Complexes across the moon. Having more big guns will help with driving back those attacks...

So far, the uprising is mainly happening around the northern regions of III-A. The centre of the rebellion appears to be Industrial Complex N-4, a sprawling mass of towers, factories and underground workshops. From there, having sparked it off, they've moved on to attack the other Complexes.

Oh yes, before you forget - the reports came from your command staff. You decided to select them for...

> Old friendships. Your family is of military background - the nobility must aid each other.
> Scores from the Officer Academies.
> Well... can't say you like a command staff you can't ogle.
> Loyalty. These were people who were of your class - now that you've risen, you take them with you.

Well, you'll never say you're a man who leaves his friends behind. You got into command rank by testing and plenty of luck, and you've brought many of your friends with you, valuing their loyalty. And in some cases, their looks.

Among them is Jerad, your intelligence officer, who comes to you just as you're preparing to open the video address and inspect the assembled troops. 'Captain?'

'Morning, Jerad. What've you got for me?'

'Grim news.' He brings you his slate, and... holy shit.

'Complex N-3 as well? And before that N-1 was already taken, wasn't it?'

'Yes, sir.' Three industrial complexes - you're guessing tens, maybe hundreds of thousands, of inhabitants. 'And it gets worse. We have evidence that some units of the Local Defence Force have actually defected to the rebel ranks, and they're organising themselves accordingly.'

'Like how?'

'They've formed three divisions - in N-1, N-3, and N-4. And then they've formed another two divisions into something called Victory Force, with which they're attacking Complex N-5.'

N-5. You flip on the slate a bit, but you remember it in the briefing. That's the largest of the complexes in the moon's northern hemisphere, with nearly 400,000 inhabitants. If the rebels can take it and its factories intact, you will be fighting half the moon, pretty much...

'Well, at least we know what are our options,' you mutter.

'Yes, sir. They're still disorganised now - we've arrived in the nick of time. But as for the attack plan...'

> N-5 is the primary objective. Assault drop into N-5, and shore up its defences!
> N-5 might be able to hold for a bit. We should assault drop into N-3, surprise them and retake it.
> We should Assault drop right into their headquarters at N-4. This could break their morale if we play our cards right.

Ten minutes after Jared's report, you call a meeting of the officers in your group. The two Regimental Commissars, the two Regimental Commanders, and then the members of your staff.

'If their so-called Victory Force is on the offensive now,' you say, looking at the map, 'then it seems we have the advantage of surprise. If we strike them right in their strategic centre, then we could possibly rout them quickly.'

'In this case,' the commander of the 332nd says, 'will N-4 be the target?'

'Yes. It is the residence of most of the rebels. They will not continue their assault on the other complexes when their homes are under attack, and will turn back. Does anyone have objections to this plan?'

'Sir.'

'Miena?' Miena is one of those old friends of yours - once an artillery sergeant, whom you have tapped. And whom you've tapped as the coordinating officer for the Mobile Artillery detachment. 'Yes?'

'Will there be preparatory work? If we assault drop into the heart of N-4 without preparation, I am concerned about scatter. At the same time, preparatory work will mean severe civilian casualties...'

'Do we even have the assets for a preparatory bombardment?'

'It could be arranged, sir, if we drop the Mob Art in a suitable position first...'

Hmm.

> If we drop the Mob Art outside, we might as well drop the Regiments outside too, to prepare for an assault.
> Drop the Mob Art first, let them bombard, then assault drop the Regiments.
> No preparatory bombardment. We will hold Mob Art in reserve, and drop both regiments in.

> Drop the Mob Art first, let them bombard, then assault drop the Regiments.

I don't know what's going on, but pull the guns out first, then the men.

We should have gone with the Napoleonic era, for a war-game.
>>
>>39987

I was thinking maybe more of a Civil War era quest one day. Quite like that era.
>>
>>40027
Whatever suits you. Do we get tactical oversight into the area? Like a wargame of sorts?
>>
>>40038

Well, I kind of want us to be in the same fog of war that they were in those days. So sometimes if you have cavalry, you have timely intelligence; other times you may run straight into the enemy.

It'd be frustrating, I can imagine, but perhaps it can also be fun!
>>
>>40043
Sounds fun
>>
>>40043
So what now? I'm a little late to the party, so skimming over parts was undesirable. What can we decide on?
>>
>>40055

Well, the main point now is that we're deciding to attack the rebels' main base. So we're deciding if we should bombard a heavily inhabited area, or launch an assault drop straight into a possibly heavily defended (and inhabited) area.
>>
>>40061

You are hesitant about what to do, and have to take a while to think about this. The Mob Art, if it is dropped without support and escorts, would be firing in a very dangerous position...

On the other hand, the problem now is what sort of resistance the rebels can put up when your dropships are en route. Assault drops into strong AA-defences can be truly perilous...

In the presence of a tiebreaker, I'll choose this option.

After a while, you eventually reach your conclusion. 'Miena, your unit will be in reserve.'

'But, Captain, do you mean to say that our men are going in rough?'

You take a deep breath. 'Will your assets be enough to provide artillery cover?'

A long silence before the commander of the 639th speaks.

'They will be enough, yes.'
>>
>>40115

You estimate that it will take you several hours before you reach the intersect point and segue into the orbit of Davaris III-A. As far as scout satellites can tell from orbit, fighting between rebels and loyalist LDF is already raging in the residential areas on the outskirts of N-5, as units plunge into combat.

'It will be around dawn when we segue,' the Captain tells you. 'And after that it will be another hour or so before you reach a suitable release height.'

'I understand, Ma'am.'

'Do you reckon you need the Fleet's assets?'

You glance at her. You are, after all, on a Dominion Battlecruiser with a carrier detachment - this means there is plenty of heavy artillery on board. But your orders are to quell the rebellion - not to incinerate half the moon. And while sometimes that might be necessary, you do not live in some sort of insane Imperium.

'I think it will not be beyond the capacity of my troops, Captain. Thank you.'

And as for the troops themselves, they are gearing up now - both in the Drop Pods and in the aircraft. The 332nd and 639th have their own artillery and that will provide some cover, hopefully... and hopefully the LDF facing you in N-4 haven't gotten round to setting up defences yet.

But if they do... well, then they have. What do you want to do in these hours?

> Prepare to monitor the battle up close. You will be boarding one of the cover ships.

Well, if you want the troops to do something brave, your instincts tell you two things:

1. You better make sure they are pumped up to do it.
2. You ought to make sure they know you're prepared to do as much as them.

For the second it's quite easy - you order for your personal shuttle to be readied for launch, at which the officer balks. 'But, sir. This is a resisted assault drop...'

'And all the more I will make sure I am not sitting safely in the back while they do it,' you say. 'Prepare the shuttle. And in the meantime, contact the commanders of the Regiments - I will be talking to their men and women in 30 minutes.'

30 minutes later, and you look into the holo-recorder as your image is projected into the assembly grounds of the 332nd and 639th. You're there, in front of them, and you can hear them greet you.

'GREETINGS, CAPTAIN!' The roar echoes through the assembly grounds, and you nod.

'Greetings, brave men and women. You have the honour of being in the front line - you are the fury of the Dominion itself. The rebels we are fighting are but a rabble. They may fight the LDF and may even induce some of the locals to their side, but against men and women like you, they will prove no match.

'Remember to keep your fighting spirit and your wits about you. Those are the bases of our military power, against which these rebel dogs cannot stand. Fight hard, fight fierce, and let's win ourselves a quick, glorious victory. What say you, soldiers?'

> Go home Leeroy you're drunk...

>>40239

It turns out that the preparation for the shuttle is a bit more complicated than you thought. You don't want to lose touch with either side of the operation while the assault drop is ongoing, so naturally you'll have to make sure the communications suite is in working order, and meanwhile you board and make sure of the armament.

'The onboard artillery is loaded?'

'Sir, the Whirlwind missiles are ready to launch, and we are loading the anti-armour missiles. We can provide support even as we circle the battlefield.'

'Excellent. Comms check, comms check.'

You do two comms checks and check the loadout, and then the Captain of the ship comes on the holo-player. 'Captain, we are currently in intersect. 95 minutes until we are above the general target area. We await coordinates.'

'My staff will send them to you. Thank you, Captain.'

'For the Dominion.'

'For Humanity!' Well then, well then. You do have to consider certain things when it comes to the drop, though. As the feed from scout satellites comes through of the target area, you quickly pore over the footage, considering good spots for your surprise assault of N-4.

'They ought to have seen us by now,' Miena says.

'I think so. Well, that's what we want. To be seen just a bit too late...'

'Sir, the 332nd's support vessels have offloaded and are entering flight.'

'Sir, the 639th's support vessels have offloaded and are entering flight.'

Their bombardment will be critical. But where shall they bombard and clear for their comrades?

> Only success: AA

The scout satellites do their job brilliantly - or at least they do in one respect. Almost immediately, you can see that there are indeed rebel AA emplacements - they seem to be hastily set up, but they are definitely there.

'Wait a minute, sir,' Jerad says, 'these are multi-linked batteries!'

'You're right...' multi-linked batteries are integrated AA systems - guns, missiles, close-in projectors, radar and infrared sensors, all connected to a semi-automated web. If you went in raw, it would have been a deathtrap! But how did the LDF get their hands on these...? 'And I think we have the main target here,' you point out. 'That is the radar array.'

Knock that out, and you will have at least half-blinded the rebels. If you combine that with a big flare-drop from the support ships, you should be able to buy time. But then the 332nd and 639th report to you that they are currently focusing fire on the drop-sites, where they have also spotted AA batteries that are independently targeted.

Why is the network so dense!? Someone must have known you were coming...?!

> Countermand the Regimental batteries. Focus fire on the central coordination!

There is a traitor in our ranks. Who was present when we declared N-4 as the target?

Either that or they hacked our communications

That seems unlikely - the emplacements are hastily set up, but it still takes more than a couple of hours. It's only been hours since you decided on attacking N-4...

You sigh. No, they're right. 'Carry on then, commanders. Clear your dropsites. Miena?'

'Yes, sir?' She's standing next to the gaunt Escaron, who is coordinating the engineer battalion.

'Your people are up. Ready the Mob Art for air-mounted bombardment.'

'I... yes, sir. I'll get to it.' She rushes for the comms gear, and then you go back into the shuttle.

By now, the ship is transitioning into a lower orbit, and it won't be long before you can launch your shuttle. From your combat feeds, you can watch as the Regimental support ships launch missiles and fire their guns into the thin atmosphere of III-A; you cannot see the corresponding explosions on the ground. But already, palls of smoke are rising - thicker than the usual industrial smoke.

And then you start seeing tracers. Shells burst in the air around the support ships as the AA finally responds, even as Miena announces that the 8 support ships holding Mob Art have now launched and have been given target coordinates...

... you can launch your shuttle now and get closer. 'How many more minutes to the drop, commanders?'

'Our timer is at 8 minutes and counting, Captain.' That's 332.

'Our timer is at 11 minutes, sir.'

Right. Good. And as for you... you look at the view panels in your command pod, and it feels as if you're in the very distillation of war itself. Bursts - flashes - plumes of fumes - and yet, silence and calm reign within this space...

> Launch your shuttle now, join the Regimental support ships.

You hesitate about whether to start directing the Mobile Artillery's fire, but then soon you get the feed of them opening up at the heart of the AA network's navigation systems. It seems better to stay here and watch, just to see where and when you'll be most needed.

'Listen to transmissions for Mobile Artillery fire mission,' you say. And a moment later you hear their voices over the commsmod.

'Kestrel 3, acquiring target - radar array.'

'Kestrel 4, consort with Kestrel 3,' the commander's voice is calm as a coma. 'Kestrel 3, proceed - fire four.'

'Fire four, roger that. Firing four.'

'Kestrel 4, fire four, roger that. Firing four.'

You can only imagine what it's like for the people down on N-4, to have the wrath of the Dominion rain down upon them. You are... aware, that many of them are innocent and have had no part in this uprising... still, in a densely populated factory city with about 110,000 people, casualties will be inevitable.

'Report, landing site AA neutralised.'

'Captain?'

Eh? 'Carry on, 332nd Fire Support.'

'We, ah, we are seeing mass civilian flight to the north of the drop zone. Mass civilian flight, towards northern residential areas. Fleeing rebels might be among them.'

'2 minutes to drop.'

'This is 639th, 5 minutes to drop.'

'They appear to be fleeing across a highway bridge right now, to the north.'

You check your maps, pulse racing. The highway bridge... is over a cut, that leads up to the residential districts and higher ground. 'Numbers?'

'I'd say a good... 2, 3 thousand people, I'd say. Fleeing mostly on foot, northwards. We don't have sufficient resolution through the smoke.'

Damnit! You see now that if rebels get over the highway bridge and to the residential district, they have a position that could overlook the 332nd's Landing Zone B. If they have weapons with sufficient range, they could easily fire down on the 332nd as it struggles among a mass of refugees. And yet - you have no proof there are rebels among them...

'Combat vehicles?'

'Negative, Captain, we don't see any.'

Fleeing on foot. Could enough rebels set up a position there in time for you to move? Would it be necessary to visit such carnage on a probably innocent mass...? Your orders authorise you to do so, certainly, but...

Provide cover for the 332nd and have them rapidly move off and out of their drop zone.

Fire on and destroy any heavy weapons fire coming from the residential district, ideally with CAS and artillery, rather than orbital weapons.

The main ship does have orbital bombardment capability. But one thing you are not authorised to do is to turn an industrial centre into a flaming hole in the moon, unfortunately - Davaris III-A is, after all, an important industrial centre in this system.

Taking out several thousand people, well, that's a borderline case but still OK-ish.

> Excellent Success!

You know what they say about assault drops in the books; the key of the operation is in one word - Concentration.

Concentration in time, a wave of attackers too large to counter.

Concentration in space, getting the craft to group together so that the troopers can regroup and claim their
positions quickly.

And you're happy to report that the assault drop on N-4, in Davaris III-A, has turned out to be pretty much a textbook landing. With the AA coordination knocked out, the drop is all but unresisted; you only see scattered, sporadic bursts of starshells in the air among the trails of drop pods.

Meanwhile, reacting to their navigation computers, the drop pods are homing in on each other as well as the landing zone. You bring your shuttle pilot on the comms.

'Launch the shuttle.'

'Yes, Captain, right on it!'
>>
>>49152

The shuttle jolts slightly as it is shifted onto the launch system, but that is all you feel before you slide out over Davaris III-A. And in any case, you're not really paying attention - there's a battle going on downstairs.

Thankfully, it seems your decision not to open fire on the bridge has helped; by the time the 332nd is positioned for its final landfall, many of the civilians have crossed the bridge and yet more are crossing it. Had you destroyed the bridge it is likely they would have fled right back into the Landing Zone.

The shuttle is beginning to launch its hover drones, designed to allow you a deeper view into the battle, but meanwhile you can see that the last stage of the landing has also been successful. Both regiments have landed and, in the 10 minutes it takes for you to circle, you have reports from all six of the battalions.

The 332nd, for all the angst about firing on civilians, has managed to consolidate its positions almost without any resistance. There are reports of sporadic fire from rooftops, but ironically it seems many of the LDF troops are on the *other* side of the bridge. They were expecting you to land on the outskirts, and now the refugees are in their way.

The 639th, on the other hand, appears to have landed in a bit of a rougher spot. While the 332nd has landed on the northern side, the 639th's Landing Zone is on the...

Link up through the city with the 639th, and leave a narrow slowly closing corridor open in the east. Force the rebels through a funnel trying to escape east. while cutting the western part into a small part separate and cut off from the rest (like 1/3 or 1/4 of the city).

This will cut the city in half, and we can focus on west or east.

The 639th has landed in the southwest side of N-4, where a large building is. You suspect the squat building is the power and water distribution centre, and it seems your suspicion is correct.

Unfortunately, it turns out the rebels have thought of that. The three battalions of the 639th report that the ground is too rough for anything but their light armour, while the LDF has set up there.

'We are under light artillery fire! Machine gun nests- there are several nests along the perimeter!'

'Company C-2 taking casualties! We are being pinned down by heavy projectile fire here!'

You dispatch the drones to survey the power plant, and, well. The 639th has pretty much surrounded it. They've cut off the approaches to the east, west and south, and on the north side is a cliff. But now that the rebels are trapped, they're fighting back hard.

'We're taking artillery fire! We're taking artillery fire from-' GRUNCH- '-from the west! From the west!'

... damnit, the AA guns! Even though the central modules have been taken out and many of the AA effectively neutralised, there are still guns on the western approach of the power plant. 'Fire Support, take your cue from 639 B-1, repeat, 639 B-1 to cue Fire Support.'

'Copy!'

639's artillery will neutralise that, you hope. But you also have the Mob Art... and no targets besides the huge power plant building itself...

> Mob Art, fire on the power plant! (Could destroy the whole complex's power supply)
> Mob Art, close in for CAS cues. (Risky - uncoordinated AA is still effective at low altitudes)
> Mob Art, continue pounding their presumed HQ. 639, advance!
> Other (write in your own commands for each regiment)
>>
>>49252
Are they taking fire from the west of the power plant or from the western side of the city high ground?
>>
>>49278

It's from their west - so it's west of the power plant, yes.
>>
>>49252
>> Mob Art, continue pounding their presumed HQ. 639, advance!

HQ is the more important sector, we'll want to take control of the power plant not destroy it so no choice to take it through infantry

Any chance our engineer battalion can assist the 639 regiment in demolishing heavy fortifications while the mob arty pound the HQ flat?
>>
>>49287

> Okay, um, dinner calls >_< Not sure when I'll be back, but once again, if you like politics, I'm Altocumulus at Akun. Thanks and hope to see you there.

You check that the engineer battalion is ready to launch - they are. 'Then proceed to the position, south of the 639's positions. They require assistance to breach defences.'

'Understood. Standing by to receive coordinates...'

Well, as those are being sent, you see Mob Art's 8 ships making a carousel formation, molested only occasionally by the AA shells. Their fire, deadly accurate, has a devastating effect on the buildings that form the centre of N-4 - and before long you suddenly feel a shudder, and a shockwave which jolts even your shuttle.

'What was that?'

You look out. Oh, damn - they've hit something highly explosive in N-4, it seems! A huge plume of rolling fire and black smoke rises out. 'Mob Art, maintain a safe distance, maintain a safe distance!'

'Copy, Captain!'

Meanwhile, 332 has consolidated its positions. Only scattered resistance - fire from the highway bridge, and some rifle fire from the rubble to their south - is facing them right now. The commander calls you.

'We have minimal casualties, and are ready to advance.'

You glance at the fireball that is the city centre. Not sure how much of the HQ there is left still...

You smile. Excellent. 'Advance into the HQ. Beware of the fire situation there.'

'Yes, I do see that sir. We will advance.'

Your drones are showing the 332 soldiers moving in three general columns, each led by a light armour spearhead, spreading out and then moving down three roads.

There is, once again, sporadic fire from surrounding buildings, but they seem to be holding up well, and soon the Mob Art is holding the carousel again, on CAS watch.

'Miena?'

'Yes, Captain?'

'The central area. Are we well covered there?'

'We are awaiting the advance. There doesn't seem to be much left - just scattered fire...'

Just then your shuttle shudders. One of the last AA guns, no doubt... maybe you should land your shuttle now to provide encouragement?

Debating

Could land near the 332nd and lead the charge itself but a tad bit too dangerous for my taste

639th regiment is under heavy fire and could use a rousing individual to lead them taking the power plant but at the same time we're the commander over seeing the entire operation, its prudent we don't expose ourselves to any unnecessary danger and be able to respond with quick and accurate orders from an eagle eye position over the battlefield

I'd leave this up to others to decide
>>

I suggest landing near the 639th, they need the encouragement and taking the power plant is both important and slightly more complicated than securing the HQ

'332nd, sitrep,' you request again just before making up your mind.

'Ah... Battalion A facing light resistance, but nothing organised. I think the Mobile Artillery has taken most of them out. We are continuing to advance.'

'Battalion B facing light resistance from buildings. Clearing out perimeter of central complex now.'

'Battalion C in position.'

Well, some battalions are luckier than others. Meanwhile you see the entry streaks of drop pods landing the Engineer battalion, and bring the 332 Commander up.

'It's all yours then. I will be coordinating the fight at 639 positions. I want you to move your Fire Support over to support 639. Mobile Artillery is all yours.'

He hesitates. 'I... yes, sir. Wilco. And as for orders after securing central N-4...'

You know the most probable avenue out is east - if they haven't fled, that's where they will flee, towards N-3 where they still have a presence. But then again, with the civilian population still in N-4, and with your men around the key facility for keeping their water and power on...

... and that's even before you consider the presence of the 'Victory Force'.

'As for orders, 332 is to entrench and fortify in place.'

'Captain,' Miena's voice comes over, 'the centre is rubble and flames now. That does not seem advisable.'

The 332 commander, who doesn't hear this, also protests. 'Ah, sir, with due respect, N-4 centre is surrounded by higher ground on three sides. With Mobile Artillery's work, we no longer have buildings to hold as positions.'

Meanwhile 639's commander has acknowledged the engineers with gratitude, but... you know what, 332's commander is right.

'Right. 332, receive new orders. On securing the centre, move southwest and link up with 639. Repeat, move southwest to link up.'

'Understood. Wilco.'

In the meantime, the shuttle is entering its landing approach, aiming for a patch of bare ground in the 639's southern positions. The pilot expertly manoeuvres and fires the retros, and a soft wobble is all you feel as the shuttle comes to a floating halt. 'Good work, pilot.'

'Thank you, sir.'

The ramp opens and you step out.
>>
>>62440

The dust and rock kicked up by the retros is still swirling around crazily even when it's landed, but yet greater dust clouds are occurring farther south. You use your sighter and see that it's their Fire Support, now making a landing. Clearly they've decided on the advantages of ground-based artillery for now in the 639...

'Captain, sir?'

You turn to see two officers greeting you and salute them back.

'We are from 639 staff-' they turn to look as a soft thud shakes the ground. 'Ah, and we're here to bring you to the HQ, sir.'

'Is that artillery fire?'

'They're repurposing their AA guns, sir. And-' another thud, this one louder, and it occurs to you that they've seen you landing. They're walking their fire towards your position. One of the officers reaches out for you.

'Sir, I think we better go!'

'All right. What's the sitrep for B Battalion?' That's the one you've landed in the middle of.

'They are preparing to push into the side buildings, sir. Our artillery is setting up...'

You nod. Should you be going to HQ? You are well aware how a lot of commanders don't take kindly to their superiors suddenly showing up - it wrecks their authority when they have to ask.

'I'm issuing an order, officer.'

He blinks, then sits up straight, as does the other officer. 'Yes, sir.'

The vehicle bounces off just as another two loud thuds shake the ground, followed by a sustained roar - the shuttle getting out of Dodge City. You pass troops marching up towards the front as well, officers clearing the road for the vehicle zooming up.

'Out of the way, you bastards! Out of the way! Make way!'

Lines of troops form up beside the paths and along cover, watching you pass. Then again the earth shakes and you see a geyser of dust behind some rocks over there, and then suddenly someone comes out and stops your vehicle.

'Sorry, sorry!' It's an officer - a woman - and she's bringing two civilians with her. 'It's urgent - I need to go to B Battalion HQ!'

The driver blinks. 'No room!'

'It's important! There could be a mine ready to blow along the advance axis!'

The officers look at you.
