You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

The mood in the palace upon your return is sombre, to say the least; your royal guests haven't even been invited to dinner. Prince Aled has arrived, and it would be improper to celebrate while he's mourning the death of his son and heir. Your brother's wedding will be in full swing again tomorrow or the day after, but until then, everyone shows proper respect for your uncle's loss.

Which is a little awkward, since you're the reason he's in mourning. Fortunately, nobody knows that.

"A hunting accident of all things, and to think it took so long for him to expire…" King Gerad sighs and shakes his head. It's one of the rare times you've seen him without his jovial mood. "To think Siarl would die in such a manner. If only he had fallen in glorious battle, at least."

The king's priorities haven't changed the least though. At least that's something you can rely on.

"He was able to distinguish himself in several battles throughout his short life," Prince Aled says. "As his father, I'm not the least bit ashamed of his accomplishments."

"It's still a shame," your sister Nesta says. "I had hoped to duel him once, but the opportunity never came."

Crown Prince Haul maintains his silent stoicism throughout the whole thing.

Overall, it is a very, very awkward dinner. The grilled peppered beef is delicious though, and the wine's aftertaste isn't overpowering. It's a very balanced combination.

You deal with the awkwardness by remaining silent. You suspect that your uncle is behind at least one ongoing plot to assassinate Archduchess Aleksandra, along with some other plan you're only partially aware of, and you don't want to do anything that might tip your hand.

"No father should have to bury his son," Prince Aled says, "but this is a joyous occasion for our kingdom's future, and I don't want to tarnish it. As the chaplains say, death is merely an occasion to celebrate a life of accomplishments. I do not wish to wallow in grief. My other children are taking on their brother's duties, and it would be disrespectful to them if I neglected my own tasks."

"Well said, little brother," your father says. "Rather than regretting the past, we should all look forward to the future."

"That's quite right, darling," Queen Margrete says. "The kingdom's future is safe with our son."

You privately thank your mother for the vote of confidence.

Dinner soon comes to an end, and Prince Aled retires to his chambers, or so he claims. You wouldn't be too surprised if it was just a cover for one his notorious deeds. You could visit Myrddin to see if you can do something about that. Then again, you've been busy running around Aurwain all day. Perhaps you should just relax around the palace, or simply go to bed.

>Meet with Myrddin. You have plans to set in motion.

It's time to pay Myrddin a visit. If competent people took time to rest, the capital would probably catch fire and burn down.

You knock on Myrddin's door a few times as loud as you can.

"I'm coming, I'm coming," Myrddin shouts. He opens the door and gives you a half-hearted glare. "You don't need to be so loud, your highness."

"Sorry," you say, "I didn't want to walk in on you while you were busy."

"If I was busy," Myrddin says, "past evidence suggests that you would never, ever know."

"… what?"

"You heard what I said." Myrddin smirks. "So, what do you need from me?"

"I'm concerned about my uncle," you say. "I have his plans in hand, but I can't leave any room for mistakes."

"A reasonable precaution," Myrddin says. "Let's talk."

The two of you sit at Myrddin's desk, and he takes out a pile of documents and a lightstone. You've memorized everything Myrddin has on your uncle, but it never hurts to take notes.

"Prince Aled's reach in the capital is extensive, but he has his limits," Myrddin says. "If too many of his assets act, it will leave him in a vulnerable position; we know who most of them are, but…"

"We need an excuse to go after them," you finish. "We need to bait them out and expose them."

"And once we do," Myrddin says, "Prince Aled won't be able to aim at Princess Reagan and Archduchess Aleksandra anymore."

Myrddin picks four pages out of his records. The first is a fixer who handles most of Prince Aled's questionable affairs in the capital, but isn't personally developed in any of it. The second is the leader of a band of local thieves who run small-time extortion rackets. The third is a courier who moves messages between your uncle's illegal ventures all across the kingdom. The last is a moneylender who oversees your uncle's legal businesses; he'd be more difficult to take out, but his loss would be the most devastating.

>"We'll target the fixer. It'll take months before my uncle can set his illegal affairs back up."
>"We'll target the petty thieves. They're the most vulnerable target."
>"We'll target the courier. He's the most important in the grand scheme of thing."

"We'll target the courier," you say. "He's the most important in the grand scheme of things."

Myrddin nods in approval. "It'll take months for your uncle to find someone he can trust and even then, it'll take years before the new courier is as familiar with the work as the current one," Myrddin says. "Prince Aled won't be able to plan any more assassinations from the comfort of his home."

Foiling your uncle's plans has become a habit for you, but if you stay on the defensive all the time, you won't be able to gain a significant advantage. It's more than past time you took your uncle down a few pegs.

"This will be a little tricky though," Myrddin says. "The courier is present in Aurwain, but he's entrenched; we can't simply raid his safehouse without a stiff fight."

"How much time do we have?" You ask.

"It will have to be done tomorrow," Myrddin says. "I don't know when he's leaving, but if he's the one who delivered the plans to assassinate Archduchess Aleksandria and abduct Princess Reagan, his business in the capital should be over. We can't afford any delays."

A stealthy approach isn't likely to work, but a frontal assault might. Alternatively, you can try to lure the courier out, or set up an ambush for him as soon as he leaves the city. You would need to arrange the ambush through proxies, however, and a hands-on approach is more likely to yield information.

>[Intrigue/1d12] "We'll launch a direct assault on the courier's safehouse. Take care of the reconnaissance."
>[Intrigue/1d10] "Find a way to lure the courier out."

"Have someone ambush and kill the courier the next time he leaves," you say. "If they find something on his body, they can bring it back. If not…" You shrug. "It'll be one less pawn on my uncle's arsenal."

"It'll certainly make things smoother for the Crown Prince if Prince Aled loses his ability to coordinate with his allies across the kingdom," Myrddin says. "I'll send the order out immediately. No one will know we were involved."

"Is there anything I can help you with, your highness?"

"Not at the moment, no," you say. "Thank you, Myrddin. As always, your help has been invaluable."

There aren't enough assassins left in the city for Prince Aled to hire more and once his courier is dealt with, he won't be able to send for agents from elsewhere. Reagan and Aleksandra should both be safe for the duration of the wedding, at least. Once they leave, they won't be your problem any more, and if they don't leave, well…

You'll deal with that when the time comes.

You return to your chambers and to the comfort of a warm shower. You slip into bed and rest peacefully until the sun rises in the morning. You prepare yourself for another day of work and think about your schedule.

Aleksandra wishes to meet with Gwain at the temples, which will give you an opportunity to deal with the assassin who's after her. You also need to deal with a spy who's been collecting rumours. To your knowledge, neither situation is urgent, although they both need to be dealt with in time.

Or you could just wander the city and enjoy the celebrations. It's a novel idea to be sure, but it might work.

You might as well get the meeting with Aleksandra out of the way. You look through your personal armoury and pick out a dagger to replace your rapier; it'll be more subtle, and this is another thing you don't want to be associated with. Afterwards, you meet with Myrddin and Olwen in your office to make plans.

This seems to be a trend in your life at the moment.

"Remember," Olwen says, "you break it, you bought it."

"What are you… No, wait, I get it never mind. That's not happening."

"That's not happening yet." Myrddin corrects you. "Do you have your disguise?"

"It's in my satchel," you say. "I'll put it all on when I get there. Right now, I want a plan to deal with the assassin."

"We can always go with the usual and have him killed when he arrives," Myrddin says. "My people already have the temples under surveillance, so it won't be difficult."

"Or you could do your own killing," Olwen says. "The Archduchess will appreciate it, I think."

"Either way, we'll need Delyth's cooperation," you say, "but that won't be too difficult."

"Lead the assassin to me," you say. "I'll kill him personally."

"Leave it to me," Myrddin says.

With that taken care of, you leave for the temples immediately. It's early, but a small crowd has already gathered. You avoid them and go looking for Delyth, who's currently tending the grounds. You take a few minutes to catch your breath before approaching her.

"Good morning, Delyth," you say. "I hate to bother you, but I need a favour."

"Oh, hello, your highness," she says. "It's nice to see you again. What can I help you win?"

Delyth pinches the side of her skirt and lifts it up slightly to show a little more of her leg. Perhaps you shouldn't have given her ideas.

"Remember that favour Archduchess Aleksandra asked you about?" You ask. "I'd like to take care of it today. There might be a bit of a mess, so I need your cooperation."

"Oh, that's no trouble," Delyth says. "I'll send a message to the Archduchess immediately. There's a room you can borrow."

"Thank you, Delyth," you say. "You've been very helpful."

"Oh, I don't mind the slightest," she says. "This is one of my duties as a chaplain."

Delyth brings you to a small room in the administrative building while she sends an attendant to fetch Archduchess Aleksandra. You take the time to change into your costume, put on your mask and dye your hair a little. You're playing Gwain's part once again.

You also make sure your dagger is easy to draw.

The door opens to reveal Delyth and Aleksandra. The Archduchess' eyes light up when she sees you.

"We meet again, Gwain," Archduchess Aleksandra says. "Thanks for setting this up, Delyth."

"You're quite welcome, Archduchess," Delyth says. "I'll leave the two of you alone so you can… talk."

Delyth closes the door and leaves. Aleksandra sits down and gives you a predatory smile.

"I was really disappointed when you didn't stay in Rosea," she says. "I quite enjoyed your company."

"I had another job lined up," you say. "I really couldn't stay any longer."

"That job should be over, right?" Aleksandra asks. "I'll tell you right away, if you join me, I wouldn't mind make you my consort right now. What do you say?"

"I'm afraid I must decline," you say. "Given our respective positions, there would be too many complications."

"I don't see what the problem is," Aleksandra says. "Thanks in part to you, I don't have any internal conflicts to deal with in Rosea, and I'm quite certain you're some sort of noble. If your family is having any difficulties, I can provide you with new sources of income or even armies as soon as I can get a message back to Rosea, no strings attached. It's a good deal, right?"

It is. In fact, it's the thing that's foremost in your mind when you think of Aleksandra. Reagan and Agda both offer better long-term prospects, but marrying Aleksandra would give you a sizeable force to stabilize Gwyrddarfordir immediately without having to deal with foreign matters.

But that's a vision in the short term, and it's not why you're here now.

You stand up and casually pace the room.

"I'm more concerned with my responsibilities than anything else," you say. "I can't leave Gwyrddarfordir, and I can't ask you to leave Rosea for a mere consort."

"Marriage isn't necessarily off the table, depending on what you can offer," Aleksandra says. "A few people would complain, but so what?"

Damn it, why are you surrounded by women who want to marry or fuck you?

And your mother. You're surrounded by women who want to marry and/or fuck you, and your mother, who exists in a completely different category.

And your sister.

You don't like where this train of thought is going. Shouldn't the assassin be attacking right now? There's another door into the room and two windows, so it's not like the entrances are covered.

You need some fresh air. Yeah, that'll make things better. You open a window and breath while desperately trying to come up with something to say to Aleksandra.

"It's… complicated," you say. "Relationships based purely on emotion are too fleeting. Relationships based on mutual advantages and benefits are only transaction. I need to find a balance."

"And you don't think you can find balance with me?" Aleksandra asks. "The benefits obviously aren't lacking, but if you want more intimacy, I don't mind if we get to know each other better. That is why I wanted you to stay with me in Rosea for a bit."

"No, that's not it," you explain. "Or rather, that's not all of it. If I didn't think a relationship between the two of us had potential, we wouldn't be talking right now."

"Are you saying I have competition, Gwain?" Aleksandra asks incredulously. "I don't know whether I should be insulted or impressed."

"You should -"

A sudden flash of light catches your attention as a steel dagger comes lunging at you from above. You dodge the attack and grab the assassin's arm, pulling him into the room. He lands with a crash and you stomp on his throat twice before he can recover, completely crushing it.

The assassin flails and kicks helplessly. You draw your dagger and stab it into the right side of his neck. Slitting someone's throat doesn't actually work very well - you're more likely to just scrape the skin unless you put a lot of force into it - but stabbing into someone's artery and wrenching the blade all the way to the vein on the other side of the throat will bleed most people dry in under a second.

You'll definitely have to apologize to Delyth for the mess though.

Aleksandra isn't surprised by the sudden attack or the gore you made. She looks at the corpse like most people would eye a piece of meat at a butcher's shop and then completely ignores it.

"You're certainly popular within certain circles," you say. "First Archduke Viktor and now this."

"I'm used to it," Aleksandra says. "So, about that competition…"

You take a wet towel from one of your pockets to wash some of the dye out of your hair and toss your mask aside.

"Hello, Archduchess," you say. "I suppose it's time we met like this."

"Oh?" Aleksandra seems more amused than anything. "So that's how it is? No wonder you were so competent, even if your scouting mission turned out to be useless."

You wince despite yourself. "Reconnaissance is always a tricky thing, especially when there isn't much time to work with," you say. "I should have brought a specialized scout group with me."

Aleksandra shrugs. "It's all in the past, and it turned out all right in the end," she says. "I suppose I should apologize for asking you to become my mere consort. Princess Reagan and Princess Agda would be my competition, then?"

"I don't really think of it as a competition," you say. "It's just a choice I have to make."

Archduchess Aleksandra closes her eyes and sighs. "This trip is really turning into a mess," she says. "I suppose you came to help me because of that Gwyrden noble I captured, or something related to him. Can you at least tell me about that?"

You could, but it would likely compromise

"Sorry, I can't say," you say. "It involves the kingdom's security, and I don't want to have any more trouble over this. I've taken the necessary steps to ensure that you are no longer involved with this anyway."

"Fine, fine," Aleksandra says. "I'll just blame it all on Viktor. It's not like the dead can argue."

"It's for the best," you assure her. "Some things are better left… well…"

You give the cooling corpse at your feet a stiff kick.

"I suppose that's true," Aleksandra says. "What are you going to do about that thing anyway?"

"Make a very generous donation to the temple so whoever has to clean this place up can't complain, most likely," you say. "I have some people around who can dispose of the body, but I'm not sure if they can get all the blood out."

"We should go then." Aleksandra stands up and takes your arm, pulling you away. "It is such a nice day outside, and I don't want to waste it. You'll accompany me, won't you?"

You get the feeling that this is not a question.

"Of course, Archduchess."

You leave the building arm in arm and take a stroll along the tombs and mausoleums. The setting is a little grim, but the temples have been decorated as cheerfully possible in honour of the Crown Prince's wedding.

"Come to think of it," Archduchess Aleksandra says, "those girls I met would be your concubines, yes?"

"I haven't chosen a concubine yet, just my first consort," you say. "It's something else I need to consider."

"Your first consort?" Aleksandra asks. "Does that mean there's going to be a second? I'd very much like to meet them."

Damn it. You're going to have to do that again?

"The Crown Prince's wedding will start in a few days…" Aleksandra gives your arm a surprisingly strong - and painful - squeeze. "… but I'm sure I can think of something to fulfill your request."

Yeah. You're going to have to do that again.

Great thread tonight. Waifu wars are so much more interesting when politics are involved.

As I mentioned last time, I'm expecting guests this Sunday, so I won't be able to run. I will be running a thread on Friday July 22nd, but I'm not sure what. I've been thinking about taking a week off from Beleaguered Prince Quest between Arc 2 and Arc 3 so I can start a more action-oriented quest that I could run on Sundays, but since I need to take a day off, I'm thinking of moving my plans up a little. I've got a literal folder full of quest ideas, and I like this one strongly enough that I wouldn't mind running two quests at the same time.

The problem is that there's a limit of three threads per IP on /qst/ and it takes about a week for my threads to fall off the board. I want to be absolutely certain that if I do start a second quest, I'll still be able to run Beleaguered Prince Quest on a regular weekly schedule.

What I'm going to do is post the opening of my hypothetical next quest in this quest as a teaser to gauge interest and I'll announced what I'm going to run next Friday on my Twitter account @BeleagueredQM.

As always, thanks for playing and goodnight.

Demons. Eldjötnar. Oni. Asura. Jinn. Monsters.

Whatever they are called, they now rule the world. On December 21st, 2012, the barrier separating Earth from what is now called the Eskathos ruptured, and these twisted creatures emerged from the Breach to gorge themselves upon the flesh and souls of humanity and sate their endless appetite for wrath, pride, envy, insincerity, falseness, boasting, and bellicosity.

Mad Wendigo spreads frozen wastelands and devours all those unlucky enough to cross its path. Radiant Lucifer spreads his devout cult of personality throughout the world. Jealous Andhaka abducts the wives of his despairing subjects. Two-faced Shezmu drowns northern Africa in orgies of wine and blood. Hidden Vucub-Caquix usurps day and night in South America. Arrogant Arachne weaves her monstrous fashion out of hair shaved from the heads of beautiful maidens. Evil-eyed Balor wages war and battle in Ireland and its neighbors to expand his kingdom.

Demons were not the only ones to return, however. Soon after the Breach opened, the Relics awakened their power. Only these men and women, mortal embodiments of divine weapons and tools, hold the power to match the forces of the Eskathos.

Excalibur and its Sheath arose first, followed by the Thunderbolt, the Tower of Babel, the Brahmastra, Gungnir, the Was and the Smoking Mirror.

The Relics defend human civilization and gather their strength until the day comes when they can lay siege to the Breach and assail the Eskathos itself.

You are one of them.
>>
>>375333
And that's the teaser for Relic Quest. I haven't used many of /qst/'s features in Beleaguered Prince Quest aside from italics since I don't think it would fit the mood, so I'd like something that would let me use the tags more often.

Thanks for running this quest! I enjoy reading it in the archive (diff. timezone).

>>
>>375327
You don't have to start a new thread when you run the next time, you can just continue in the old one. We're at 185 posts now and far away from autosage. And even when the thread is in autosage, as you said it still stays on the board for a long time.

>>375341
Seconding, it's one of my very favourite quests (tied for 1st with something very different)
>>
>>377797
>You don't have to start a new thread when you run the next time, you can just continue in the old one.

That's actually something I want to experiment with, but I don't want to do it with BPQ in case it screws something up. If I run two sessions in one thread, they'd both be archived together, and I don't want people to lose track. I'd have to figure out a way to keep track of it all, and it'd probably be less convenient than just starting a new thread.

In any case, I'm making sure that any other quest I run will not affect BPQ's regular schedule.
>>
>>378120
Other quests do it all the time, just link to your post in twitter and don't label it as thread no. whatever. Since its the same thread. Its not important to increase the thread count, thats just how shit has been done.
>>
>>378120
It's like with archiving a thread early, the description will be incomplete but everything else is the same. As long a the thread numbers in the archive are correct, people will see while looking at the archive that there is no thread missing, just that the descriptions are a bit off.
