"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

It’s been 5 days since you left the main body of the Black Company to deliver the Neumunster town of Kresden to your Employer on a silver platter. Poor choice of words given most of these undead types hate silver. The 9th Platoon rangers have been leading you through the backroads of the countryside, it’s why they were assigned to you in the first place after all.

Like the Company, the Necromancer’s host has split into two parts. One larger portion marches on the western Neumunster provinces, to crack down on any resistance and hold the bridges against the Free Alliance armies and returning Neumunster legions until winter. The other two make free with the central and northern provinces, bit by bit bringing the greater part of the Neumunster Empire under the dominion of the Necromancer. Or razing it to the ground, both seem like equally satisfactory outcomes to your Employer.

At first you fretted about every single lone straggler or family on the move, fleeing one roving band of undead or another. But now it hardly matters, refugees are all over the countryside packing everyone road, even the more roundabout ones, with wailing children, fretting women and nervous men. Most of them have only a vague idea of where they’re going. Away from here being the general consensus.

But for the most part, while plenty choose to flee further north, the majority like you meander towards the pretty little walled town before you. Kresden, the provincial capital of this small province.

Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ stands beside you, watching the refugees trickle into the town in the distance. And some trickle out, clearly not convinced this town will fare any better than the ones before it.

“The walls aren’t that high.”

“High enough.” You were always the realist.

“It’s not too big of a town for the men we’ve got.”

“Big enough.”

“Town like that, won’t have too many guards.”

“It’ll have enough.”

‘Bad Hand’ gives an exasperated sigh, which you take as conceding to your victoriously pessimistic outlook.

> “How many of those Tallensand uniforms do we have lying around?” That column was marching to Kresden anyway, so you’d be expected. [Elite]

> “Think a few of us could pass as refugees?” Dark Father knows you have the spare kids and troopers of the female persuasion to pass it off. [Clever]

> “Everyone has a price. We could bribe a guard to open a side gate.” Easiest option by far. Unless it becomes a trap… [Experience]

>Also would the black company be too well known to pose as mercs looking for a job?

While the majority of the Free Alliance and it's denziens would only recognise the Necromancer's forces by the fact that they are clearly no longer breathing, many would be aware of living mercenaries being in their employ as well.

And even if you were friendly mercs looking for work, it would be a fool of a mayor to let you into the town en mass.

Having crushed 'Bad Hands' positive comments you offer your cunning plan to overcome the keen and oft-lazily-drifting eye of the town watch.

“Think a few of us could pass as refugees?”

"I figured there was a reason you were keeping those little shits around." SGT 'Bad Hand' says with a frown, probably speaking of Legless Jenny. Trooper Kid as well more than likely, his (or her) kleptomania is endearing to you thanks to your cut of it but can be understandably grating on others less blessed.

"Couldn't be all at once. I reckon enough of us can pass as fleeing villagers, arms hidden in the wagons." Bad Hand is clearly warming to the idea "Bit of mud and a few tears, sob story blah blah blah. Bam, we're in."

The few Wildborn in your ranks and… whatever it is that Mask is, will have to stay behind. Can’t see their sort walking up to the Neumunster walls going down well at all.

But all in all this should work. Should being the key word that’s been in so many brilliant plans of officers you’ve served under in the past. Hopefully your idea of ‘should’ is more accurate than theirs.

"Can't be all at once though, Prince. We'd have to trickle in throughout the day. On top of that, the 7th might get in easy enough but we'd be pushing our luck with the Troopers and Rangers..."

---------------------------------

> "That shouldn't be a problem. Keep the number's normal for the day's refugees. We regroup somewhere in the town then let the rest in at night." Safer option for getting into town to be sure, but if something should go wrong before you seize an entrance you'd be in trouble...

> "We should risk it. Sure it'd be suspicious for that many refugees, most of them fighting aged men, to be coming through all at once. But I don't like the idea of the 7th alone in town." A higher chance of something going wrong at the entrance, but at least the 7th won't be alone if everything becomes fekked.
>>

If you guys want to pursue this that's all well and good, but I'd need more of a working plan, I reckon.

Who would you be taking hostage to ensure they let the rest of you into town?

Why would you be considered renowned enough for a Neumunster funeral inside the town? (Ragnar being a head of state gave him a bit of clout)

"Right you are." Bad Hand nods at the safer option. Or the prospect of direr odds for the 7th. You never know with him. "Best I get to letting the troops know, let them know what's what before they get to sleeping."

You’re left alone watching the sunset as Bad Hand leaves to sort out the minor details. It's a gorgeous sight, you can't tell where the earth begins and where heaven, if you believed in such a place, begins.

It's easy to ignore the troubles of the world with a view like that. Easy enough for most that is, but you're an Officer now. So you worry. But, if you're honest with yourself you would have worried at times like these long before you earned your pips. Long before you were even Corporal, probably.

There's no shortage of things to fret over, but most of all you worry about...

-------------------------------

> The prospect of numerous sharp objects being pointed at, and in, you tomorrow. That's been your prevailing worry for 11 years now and it's not changed since. [Experience]

> That fekking Dragon. Soon enough you'll have to attempt to impose your will on it again, or be eaten in the attempt. Whatever possessed you to release the giant fire-breathing lizard? [Courage]

> Women. What else? Dark Father help you it was never like this before. Or maybe it was always like this. [Clever]

> This new officer gig. Are you doing it right? Should you be more commandery? Less so? No one gave you a booklet on instructions for how this works. [Elite]

>2 SUCCESS!

Your knowledge of dragons was limited to childhood stories and rumours from the Wild. Big, scaly, comes with wings. Breathes fire, eats gold and likes damsels. Or the other way around. You knew all that already.

That they speak the Black Tongue, that Page #136 refers to ASGORGA as 'The Unbound', and that crazy spirit realm you found yourself flung into...

Well needless to say that's all news to you. And what's more, you think that give you an advantage in the Dragon Handling business.

+10 DC to your next attempt to dominate ASGORGA.

You’re snapped out of your scheming, fretting and worrying when you feel a presence behind you, grasping at you from behind. Her hot breath warming the back of your neck while her left hand snakes around past your stomach to grab- Wow, she is forward.

“I don’t like to play around, Your Majesty.” CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara whispers, nibbling your earlobe ever so slightly. “I’ll be in my tent.”

There’s a slight squeeze before she lets you go, her fantastic fekking hips swaying more than usual as she walks away. You're blushing like a maiden on her wedding night, your head is spinning and there's a noticeable, and not altogether unpleasant, stirring in your loins.

You er… you’re sure you had something to do before sleep.

>Poker match with the lads tonight. Sergeant Griff is dead. Corporal Trots isn’t here, nor is ‘Whisper’. But you should be able to rouse one up with the other Officers and Sergeants. [Clever]

First we aid Saint against demons, then break her heart. Then we let an orphan get eaten, but turn back to help the last orphan. We don't want to get promoted, but are ambitious enough to try and take hold of a fucking dragon.

(unfortunately)

The banners on the left-most tower, seem unfamiliar. Skald, maybe? You know they declared for the Free Alliance, but to get here that quick they'd had to have moved fast or already been on the way. You jot down an extra banner-worth of Skald warriors on your list of 'things that could go wrong'. By comparison, your list of 'things that could go right' is dreadfully small.

Still, after hours of brainstorming, analysing and general banging your head against the map in front of you... you still feel like there's something missing. There's three major targets, take them and the town is yours.

(1) The Main Gate
(2) The Mayor's Manor
(3) The Town Watch Barracks

The plan is simple, once the 7th are regrouped and after dark...

--------------------------

> You go loud, seizing the Main Gate to let both the 4th Infantry and 9th Rangers in. It will allow your 3 Platoon's worth of men to seize the remaining targets simultaneously, but they'll alarm will be raised and they'll be ready for you by then.

> You do this quiet-like. Secure a side gate, sneak in the 4th Infantry and that . You've seen yourself, the approach to the walls from that direction only leaves room for one Platoon to move under cover, any more and it'd be slow going to get them inside before alarms are raised. From there your 2 Platoons can strike at 2 unprepared targets at once.

Take 1 to let our forces in, take 3 to shank 'em while they're sleeping and give the mayor no forces to fight, forcing him to surrender

Target (1) and (3) seem to have it.

So have the Rangers sneak up the walls and attack the Mayor Manor? Or let them in through the main gate and then move on the last target?
>>

I think that ship has sailed. We are already after both the Captain and Trooper Saint. The waifu wars have began.

Pretty sure Tara just wants a FWB arrangement. Sleeping with your CO is probably also a good career move in an amoral merc company.

(1) The Main Gate
(2) The Mayor's Manor
(3) The Town Watch Barracks

Have the Rangers secure the Main Gate. Should make their mission easier. The real sneaky types can get in and the let the rest of the platoon inside.

The 4th Infantry should take the barracks.

The 7th will take the manor.

I'm not sure I follow. 7th Kriegstrom Platoon, if all goes according to plan, will already be inside. As voted on, they will then let the 4th Infantry in through a side gate. From there one will seize the main gate and the other will seize the town watch barracks.

All I'm asking is do you want the Rangers to sneak over the walls simultaneously or let them in once the main gate is yours?

How about a compromise between those two choices? When our troops move to take the main gate, the really sneaky types in the 9th can scale the walls and start slitting throats. Whoever secures the gate controls first, opens the gates for the rest of the 9th.

Once you're in, 7th Platoon with seize the Main Gate; trapping most of those of importance inside and keeping potential reinforcements out. 4th Platoon will secure the Town Watch Barracks. You've made it clear to LT 'Hawk' (for his lungs, not his eyesight) that they are to avoid turning it into a sluaghterhouse if possible. If the Town Guard were the type to go looking for a fight they'd have joined the Legions. Meanwhile the 9th Rangers under the Wildborn Lieutenant Hard-of-Heart will mount an attack on the Mayor's Manor. A few personal guard of note might be there, but the rangers numbers and firepower will win out.

Everything is fine. You have your plan, the men to pull it off and fretting over every little thing you have no control over isn't going to help anyone. There's no accounting for those Skalds though, you wish you knew how many of them there were.

You dream of your desk staked with maps, scribblings of tactics and CPL 'White Bitch' draped naked over the-

You awake with a jolt.

With great power comes great responsibility. You’d think the opposite would also be true, but despite all the extra chores, duties and responsibilities you haven’t seen a lick of evidence to suggest you’ve received the willpower or secret techniques to suggest that you are getting anything out of this officer gig except a pain in the fekking arse.

You’re up early. Earlier than anyone else. Except those on watch, who you check to make sure they haven’t dozed off. No fire, unfortunately, you’re too close to town. Be kind of suspicious for refugees to just park far outside the walls and set up shop. So you’re forced to shave with cold water. But better that than a lance in the arse from a wandering Neumunster patrol.

Checked your armour, sharpened your weapon, looked for Kaipa snakes in your boots. Then you stuffed the lot of them down at the bottom of a cart covered with foodstuffs, blankets and other odd items like random furniture that a fleeing not-too-clever peasant might think to grab. That includes the boots, can’t have a refugee with poor clothes and decent boots, that’d be conspicuous. With all the standard sundries of the day out of the way you crouch into a relaxed position to start your meditation. Blocking out the sounds of the very early morning, the rustle as other soldiers get up, the sound of your own breath and heart…

“I want my sugarsweet now!” Sitting atop the cart, Legless Jenny was clearly a born actress. Or a born right little shit since she’s been whinging long before the town guard in front of you was in ear shot.

“Soon, my dear daughter soon!” Soon I’ll give you more than gap-tooth you’ll rotten little-
You keep the smile plastered on as the fantastically bored looking Town Guard addresses you.

“Name?”

“Mr. Aeron, sire. “ Taking your hat off to address a social superior. Even though Neumunster-sorts tend to be fairly egalitarian over these things it never hurts to brown-nose a little when deceiving.

“No! I want a sugarsweet –right now- or I’m telling!” Telling?! Good thing you’re an orphan or doubtless your parents would have strangled you long ago you fekking-

“Your daughter’s got a mouth on her.” Thankfully the guard seems just as fed up with Legless Jenny as you, he gestures towards Trooper Kid “Why can’t she be more like your boy? …or, no yeah boy.”

“Lad’s a mute.” You mumble sadly, you can mumble with the best of them. “Won’t say nothing nor make a peep, tends to sneak up on ye he does.”

“Ah. Too bad. He’s young yet, but the Legion’s could use a lad like him these days. They won’t care too much for whether he has anything worth saying.” The Guard looks fairly forlorn at that. “Sad, but them’s the times.”

“Aye, but the missus wouldn’t have none of it I can tell you that.” You stick a thumb over to the hooded Saint sitting next to Jenny. Even the most uninquisitive guard might wonder at her shocking white hair.

“What about him, then?” The Guard nods over to the strong-limbed, frowning Pietre Verdun at your side. “He seems a likely enough sort. Surprised the recruiters haven’t lapped him up yet.

>3 SUCCESS!

”He’s not from around here. Cousins of ours went to Chevalisse years back, with the Warlord around they sent the boy here for safety before things became what they are now.” You pat the tall master-swordsman affectionately on the shoulder, giving the Guard a cheerful grin. “We all have our troubles, but I couldn’t turn away me Ol Aunty’s grand-nephew twice-removed now could I?”

“You’re a good man , Mr. Aeron.” The Guard gives you an approving nod. “Looking out for your family as most do, but going so far as to be taking in distant relatives when you don’t have to as well. Especially in times like these. Look, anyone in there gives you trouble just ask for Pat Kergin, I’ll make sur-“

Just right then, thank the Dark Father, a scuffle breaks out between two different families behind you. From the squawking and angry claims, it seems it’s over the legitimate ownership of a stray chicken.

“Aw for feks sake, move along now!” The guard waves you through as he goes to pull apart the two muddy farmers trading blows in the muck. “Why is it always when I’m on fekking duty!”

You almost sense a kindred soul in the tired Town Guard, looks like you made a friend.

Seize the Town doesn't mean shank every living Town Guard if everything goes according to plan. Of course, that relies on everything going according to plan.

>>379759

Okay. You’re in. That wasn’t so bad, and if the attentiveness of the guards was any indicator the rest of your lads should trickle in without much trouble. But you need a place to stay, to regroup, gear up and organise. Pick your targets throughout the day before striking tonight.

Trooper Vendis Durvano says he knows a guy, back from his pirating days. He tells you, with many ‘arrs’ and ‘mateys’ of course, that any friend of his would have no trouble finding out of the way spots to congregate.

Saint has mentioned that she knows the local priest, she can get us sanctuary there. It’s good that she’s putting the mission before her friends in the church. Or perhaps she reckons that if you at least start from there it’s less chance of them getting caught up in the crossfire.

The tavern is also an option. You’d all have to order something to drink of course, nothing more suspicious than hanging out in a tavern not drinking. It’s the most natural cover, and you’re certain you can keep the more troublesome of your Platoon from drinking too much.

You could just loiter around. There seems to be no end to the human traffic around here, no way in hell the guards will be pestering you much, too busy trying to direct the mass of humanity. Block off one alleyway with a few harsh frowns and you’ve got your own piece of street to organise in.

--------------------------------------------

> Abandoned warehouses, backroom deals with unscrupulous characters? Sure it’s cliché but if Durvano knows a guy… [Clever]

>Seeking sanctuary in the Temple. It’s quiet, and kind of where newly arrived refugees would be expected to go. And you never turn down a free feed. [Courage]

can't trust us to not get sold out by unsavory characters if we go warehouse, too many loose lips/ears in a tavern, same problem plus might get the town guard called on us if we take over an alley

Worst comes to worst, we can cover all the exits at the church and completely commandeer it, plus hostages, etc

Maybe we can convince them it'd be a whole lot better to work with the Company than the town.

>>
>>379981

>>
>>379981
she lost her saintly powers because we broke her faith. She chose to live, even at the cost of fighting for the people who brought her world crashing down because the alternative was death, and the that choice is what caused her to lose her powers. Plus. You know. She's basically a deserter. Not much of a welcome waiting for her back home, I suspect. and while we aren't really canon BC, nobody leaves once they join. Nobody goes back to their old life. That's literally the whole point

Plus, you know. QM has more or less outright stated her powers work on personal faith; as long as she believes in /something/ she gets her super sword (and other shit) back

The entire reason she even threw in with us was because we're all she has now. Better to make her believe in us, to throw in with us completely and utterly. Not sure if that means we let her rub off on us and we try to temper our viciousness/ruthlessness or we bring her down to our level and turn her into a Blackguard full stop though. Even if we don't waifu her I want her to regain her powers because badass cutie3.14 on our side is a super super useful asset. Good looking, martial/mystical abilities, tactical training. Basically a cut above most of our other named characters and we could use her in every role we use ourselves in
>>
>>379998
Listen up, Simon. Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me! Believe in the Kamina who believes in you! start thowing in some Gurren Lagann lines in here for moral
>>
>>379998
Her only choices were either death or the Company, and joining up directly lead to the loss of her power. I wouldn't be surprised if she thinks that leaving a bunch of relatively evil mercs to rejoin noble knights will let her regain her faith, honor and all that. Plus, her attempting to leave but choosing to stay instead could be a pretty poignant scene for character development.

>2 SUCCESS

Just when Trooper Saint is looking the other way you none too subtly twist Legless Jenny’s ear. Unfortunately her crying and Saint’s suspicious glare send you on enough of a guilt trip to cave in and buy her a sugarsweet. You get Trooper Kid one too, not because you care of course but because it would be inconspicuous to buy one for one of your kids and not the other.

“Arr matey.” Trooper Durvano leers with a all-too-cheerful grin, with as many teeth gold as there are missing. “You can rely on old Vendis to get ye to a safe harbour on stormy nights such as these!”

You frown up at the sunny weather, not a cloud in the sky.

“Yar, twere metaphorical, Cap’n Prince.”

“It’s Lieutenant, Trooper Durvano.” You sigh.

Maybe someday, between his and Trooper Belhamun’s attempts, one of them will get it right.

“…are ye the one in charge of us round here?”

“Yes?”

“Aye, that makes you the Cap’n then.”

You give up.

“Harharr! Don’t worry about it, matey!” Trooper Durvano gives you a distinctly unprofessional slap on the back, but you can’t very well rebuke him in public. “Anyways like I said, this Brento is an alright sort.”

Trooper Caroline Schuster’s scar crinkles, and not with a smile for once. “Brento? Ain’t he the one what stabbed you way back?”

“Well… yeah a bit.” Durvano admits abashedly “But that were over a legitimate difference in interests, no hard feelings!”

Great. Just fekking great. Fully ready for an ambush of assorted thieves or half the town guard you burst into the abandoned warehouse. All that’s waiting for you is a few rats, cobwebs and one of the least pleasant looking people you’ve ever seen. At least out of the living ones you’ve seen.

Brento, assumedly, grunts at Trooper Durvano. They don’t go so far as to shake hands or hug, but there is at least a familiarity in the mutual scowl they share.

“We square over Etos?”

“We square, matey.”

Another grunt, quite the vocabulary on this one. Brento doesn’t even part with a wisecrack about keeping the place clean or anything. What wasted opportunity for some verbal jousting.

Still, he came through. This place is as decrepit and out of the way as any sorry batch of villainous ne’er-do-wells could ask for. Perfect place for your little congregation. Seems like there is honour among thieves, or maybe the local mob boss just realises which way the wind is blowing.

The rest of the Platoon starts to trickle in throughout the day in, mostly in ones and twos. You’re just about unfinished loading the wagons and gearing up almost everyone when Corporal Hirstun of Ligh walks in with Crackfoot, Godric Golden and Arlen Rivers in tow. He looks worried, and whatever worries THE Hirstun of Ligh worries you.

“We have a problem, Lieutenant.”

Of course you bloody do.

"What is it Corporal?"

"That Skald banner on the western tower? It's not Skald, it's Grenn."

"The Canids? They're here?"

b]Grenn. The dog-faced bipeds from further north across the Trearth where even the battle-mad Skald rarely dare tread. Where it snows in summer and no sensible man would choose to live there. Which they don't.

Instead north of the Trearth is Grenn territory. Folk whisper that they were men turned feral, bred with the wolves that prowled that cursed land. Others say a witch cursed them to their current form, never to be broken. The Grenn themselves are silent on the matter. They are savage, unrelenting and ferocious in war. And they only travel anywhere in numbers for war.

"You know 'em then?" Hirstun grimaces.

--------------------------------

> "No. I've heard the stories though." Everyone has. [Clever EASY]

> "You could say that..." You knew a Grenn outcast once. From before. [Experience MEDIUM]

> "Too well." They slaughtered the first squad you were ever assigned to. You only survived by playing dead. [Elite MEDIUM]

> "Too well." The Northern Coast Campaign. You were the sole survivor of that particular skirmish. [Courage HARD]

Selecting a harder choice will indicate your rep/knowledge of the Grenn

DC Medium = 60
DC =65 (Elite II +5)

0 = You can't remember what you had for breakfast, let alone shitting yourself 10 years ago.
1 = You recall the engagement. Hard to forget really.
2 = You recall their strengths, the threat they pose
3 = You recall their strengths, their fury. But also a weakness...

This time I will take 2d100! First roll is useful knowledge, the 2nd roll is for how affected you are.

0 = You also now have innate phobia of dogs.
1 = You have plenty of terrors to keep you waking of sweating at night. But that sticks with you the most.
2 = The occasional nightmare, but it was a long time ago. There plenty of more recent material to keep your bowels loose
3 = You remember it all perfectly. But you're not scared. You're angry. (Courage II)

Time for Flashback.

Hirstun of Ligh fought on the other side. In the entirety of the Skalds and Northern Coast secessionists, there probably wasn’t a harder human fighter nor one with a harder reputation on their whole side. He didn’t have to worry about the Grenn when the Half-Moon Clan declared for the Skaldish Jarls.

He didn’t have to worry about sentries disappearing from his camp in the middle of the night, hearing their screams as they were eaten for hours and never knowing where until you found the unrecognisable carcass that morning. He didn’t have to worry about your patrol being ambushed by a Pack.

You can’t even remember the ambush itself, you just remember being shovelled into the snow by what you later realised was Corporal Lefty’s top half of his dismembered body.

The guts of your NCO slithering still warm down your cheek. Trying not to move, trying not to breath, trying not to blink as the bloodmad dogmen scrounged around the remnants of your massacred squad.

Trying not to scream, cry,or even whimper when you heard them find Trooper Betrand alive…

You knew the Skald would be a problem. You just thought it was a human problem. One that didn’t entail fangs, claws and reliving the traumatic experiences of your youth.

From the look on the older Kriegstrom members including Hirstun’s Dozen (odd name given there’s only three left), they share your apprehension. Even if it’s from reputation and not experience.

Luckily, you came prepared.

“Luckily, I came prepared.”

Unfortunately I’m going to call it here. We’ll kick off the fun well and truly next week, hope you’ve been enjoying yourselves as much as I have!

------------------------------------

With a dramatic flair you crack open a previously untouched crate from the back of the wagon. With many an awed “Ooooh”s and “Aaahhh”s the majority of the platoon crowds around behind you, jostling to get a look at the device. It looks like a clumsier, bulkier version of your Ajiyimad pistol. The ammunition, a single large shell, is inscribed with numerous layers of wards and faintly glowing runes.

“So um… what is it exactly, boss?” Trooper Caroline Schuster eventually picks up the courage to ask as you pluck it out to give everyone a better look.

“It’s an ingenious device engineered by the sharpest minds in Weapons Development.”

Which is to say you bashed Qar-Tel from Supply and Page #136’s heads together until they agreed to design something that would allow you to put ASGORGA use. Which is just as well seeing as he’s eating half of the bloody rations apparently when he’s not out hunting for damsels or knights or sheep (he’s not picky).

“With this device I can call down aerial reinforcements to deliver overwhelming firepower…” You grin at your own incredibly clever pun “…and provide much needed muscle to tenuous tactical situations.”

The crowd of Black Company Kriegstrom Shocktroopers looks suitably impressed, even though all you did was say ‘I fire this and call up a Dragon when things are looking fekked’ in a fancier way.

“I call it the…”
