You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You pour a little something extra into your tea to help you relax a little. You pour and pour and pour and keep pouring…

"Why not skip the tea and go straight for the booze?" Myrrdin asks. "At this rate, you're going to run out of cup."

"That would be unrefined, Myrddin," you say. "I'm not a drunkard."

"If you say so, your highness," Myrddin says. "In any case, you'll be pleased to know that all the assassins currently in the capital work for us, and that your uncle won't be able to get replacements any time soon. You've officially saved the Crown Prince's wedding."

"And no one will ever know, or trace any of it back to me." You calmly sip your tea. "Just the way I like it. What about that spy you uncovered?"

"Still no news on that front," Myrddin says. "He's asking a lot of questions, but either they're not suspicious, or they're about a broad range of equally suspicious topics. I can't narrow it down at the moment."

That spy is the least threatening of your immediate concerns, including the group date you need to organize. You can leave him be for now, or you can try to dangle some bait in front of him and see what happens.

>"No need to change our plans. Keep watching the spy for now."

You finish your cup and refill it, only without tea this time.

"Dangle some bait in front of him," you say. "You can use your own judgment as to what you should say, but I want to see what I he reacts to. It's not an immediate threat, but I still want to deal with it."

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says. "I'll mix in some truths and lies and see what happens."

"With that out of the way, we should talk about our business for the day," Myrddin says. "I understand the Archduchess requested another outing?"

"She wants to meet my prospective consorts," you say. "I'm not in a position to turn her down, after the way things turned out."

"Fortunately, a few things came up." Myrddin slides a small stack of invitations across the table. You pick them up and read them one by one.

The first is an invitation to a ball. It's nothing special, just banquet and dancing, but you should be able to get a quiet table and just talk if that's what you want.

The second invitation is to a parlour. It would be more private than a ball, but it wouldn't be considered intimate. It's a good choice if you don't want to appear too eager.

The last invitation is from a restaurant that recently opened. The owner is trying to curry favour, and wishes too let you know that you can reserve a private room if you're interested. It's more private than the first two options, and it's more likely to be taken as a date.

>"We'll go to the ball. I've gotten very good at those."
>"Contact the parlour. I want something a little simpler."

"Coerced or not, I might as well give it my all," you say. "Reserve a room at the restaurant. You're sure they're reputable?"

"They're clean," Myrddin assures you. "No ties to anything shady or the nobility, really. They're just looking to show off a bit."

"That's fine, then," you say. "Let me know when the time comes. I have some things to take care of here."

"Yes, your highness."

Work involves plans for the security of the Crown Prince's wedding, both in the palace and in the capital as a whole, as well as some military appointments. Now that Prince Haul is getting married and will presumably produce an heir of his own, he's inheriting some of the King's military forces, while Haul's former forces are being delegated to you and your sister to make up the difference. It isn't much, just a few extra forts and roads, and some nobles who will be sending reports to you instead of the Crown Prince. Altogether, it's not much extra work.

It is interesting, however, that plans to reassign forces along the northern border are noted as "pending." You suspect it's your mother's work; she must be waiting for you to plan your own wedding before letting those assignments go through in order to benefit from any new political alliances. That, however, will have to wait. The Crown Prince must have his big day first, after all.

After going through all the documents, you stand up and stretch your limbs. Myrddin hasn't returned, so your date isn't on yet. You might as well make some time for your family.

To hell with it. You'll just wander into the dining room and see who you run into.

It turns out you run into almost everyone.

"Margrete, I told you, now that Haul is taking more responsibility, I have more than enough time to ride into battle again!" King Gerad boasts. "Imagine the glorious tales of the king riding into battle once more!"

"Indeed, father," Nesta says. "Your skill and bravery is an inspiration to us all! It is our duty to spearhead our armies, just as our ancestors did!"

Oh, this old song and dance. You've grown used to it after all these years, but it still makes you want to crack your skull open banging it against the wall.

"Come now, darling," your mother says, fake tears in her eyes. "I just returned after so long, and you want to leave me already? Don't you love me anymore? Have you gotten tired of me after all this time?"

"O-of course not, Margrete," King Gerad protests. "I swore I would never love another woman in my life. The moment I saw you, I knew we would be together forever!"

"Then no more battles for you."

You smile and take a seat at the table. "I see everyone is doing well," you say. "The Crown Prince isn't here?"

"He's busy getting acclimated to his new responsibilities," Nesta says. "You've gotten a fair share of his assignments, Meirion. I must say, I'm a little jealous."

"Your duties are no less than mine, sister," you assure her. "We'll all be quite busy for the next few years."

"It shall be a great challenge," Nesta says. "I very much look forward to it."

Transitions of power and responsibility are always a tricky issue. People take the opportunity to retire, or shift their assets around to exploit new opportunities. It can take a long time to get everything aligned towards a common goal again, especially when some people are disruptive.

Like your uncle.

>"As do I. I'm sure we'll do quite well, sister."

"As do I," you say. "I'm sure we'll do quite well, sister."

"Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing my children's accomplishments," Margrete says. "So don't keep me waiting."

You get the feeling your mother isn't talking about military achievements.

"Do not worry, mother," Nesta says. "Meirion and I have both obtained great military victories while you were away. We didn't bring our House the least bit of shame!"

Nesta, on the other hand, doesn't catch on to the implications behind the Queen's words.

"To think my children are adults already," your father says. "This is truly a parent's joy. Come to think of it, Nesta, have you thought about claiming a principality? It's only proper for you to have your own city, now that Haul is getting married."

"Hmph!" Your sister snorts. "Father, I have much more important things to do than waste my time on bureaucracy and politics. Such things can wait."

Yes, but you, however, can't. You need to solidify your power base and claim a city as soon as possible, or else Myrddin and your mother will never let you live it down.

"Actually, father, I was hoping to claim a principality myself," you say. "I think it would be good for me to take on additional duties while I still have the time, and since the throne will be transitioning to Prince Haul, now seems like a good time."

It's highly improper to skip the birth order and allow you to claim a city before your sister, but Nesta doesn't seem to care the least bit. It all comes down to what your father wants.

"Since Nesta isn't interested at the moment, I don't see anything wrong with that," King Gerad says. "What do you think, Margrete?"

"I don't see a problem, darling," your mother says. "Besides, this will give Nesta more time in the military."

"I'm not certain, mother," Nesta says. "I am concerned that Meirion would squander his time with such things."

"It can't be helped, sister," you say. "Someone must look after the people. The cities are extremely important to our kingdoms, and they must be protected. I can take a few years off from field duty."

"When you put it that way, it does sound acceptable," Nesta says. "I have no more objections."

"Very well," King Gerad says. "Meirion, we'll talk about this again once the wedding is over."

"Yes, your majesty."

It'll give you time to gather some information and speak with Myrddin. You'd like to make an informed decision on this matter.

Lunch continues as normal. You make some small talk, show excitement towards the Crown Prince's wedding, and leave once the meal is over. Most of your work is done for the day, but you can think of a few ways to busy yourself.

Generally we just run the administration through our own, by hiring competent people. The rest will fall into place from that, its not that much work, just a question of who rubber stamps the paper work.

What we would get is a greater sphere of influence for a relatively cheap price, the security of our sister. plus the common people would know the prince is helping, which builds good will in other territorys of the kingdom. This becomes important if our uncle tries charcter assasination as a plot, or if we have to face a rebellion. The merchant troubles in our neighbour can quite easily transfer to us if we don't eventually look into reforming how our guilds work.

A lovely work around would be how the british monarchy survived: Royal approval/decree being the basis for guilds and charters rights to their contract. Basically loaning out royal power for rights. e.g. "The royal family decrees that x company has the right to Y". Makes removing the royals less palatable since it throws profitable contracts up in the air and any removal of the monarchy when these become widespread entrenched institutions would mean utter bloody chaos.

You whistle merrily and saunter about the palace, enjoying your brief time off until something disastrous requires your immediate attention. Your enjoyment ends when you turn a corner and walk nose-first into a suit of red and white armour.

"Duke Vaughan," you say. "Hello. It's been a while, hasn't it?"

"Indeed, your highness," Duke Vaughan says. "I'm happy to see you're doing well. I was just visiting my daughter, who is not pregnant and who will remain that way for the future, yes?"

Olwen's father stands a head taller than you and then some. He glowers down at you, every wrinkle and muscle on his face twisted into a mask of pure horror, and stares into your eyes like he's trying to bore a whole right into your soul.

But it's okay. You've been in worse situations. You can totally handle this. Really. You're not lying to yourself at all.

"Yes, I am aware of this," Duke Vaughan says in spite of how seized his muscles are. You still don't know how any of this works. "You are correct. That does not mean I have to like it."

Duke Vaughan grinds his teeth, but you're thankfully interrupted before he can do or say anything else.

"Father, you're still here?" Olwen asks. "Oh, hello, your highness."

Duke Vaughan's muscles relax immediately and he twists his neck around to smile at his daughter.

"I was just leaving, Olwen," he says. "I'll see you again as soon as I can."

Duke Vaughan walks away and you remain absolutely still and silent until you're certain he's out of earshot.

"So, what was that about?" Olwen asks.

"Our kids," you answer. "The topic seems to worry him a bit."

"Yes, well, that's not a priority," Olwen says. "I enjoy the sex too much to stop having it for a few months. Then again…"

"I don't have the slightest idea," you say. "It starts, it happens, it ends. Just like everything else in life, really, if you're really broad and vague about how it happens."

"That sounds incredibly romantic." Olwen kisses your cheek. "Come on, let's go. The host shouldn't be late."

You take Olwen's arms go wait at the palace entrance. Myrddin brings you over to the restaurant immediately while the princesses are still getting prepared; there are some details to decide before dinner, and very little time.

The restaurant - oddly called The Salty Fish - is a small, unobtrusive place. The dining only has a dozen tables, and you're taken to a more private room on the second floor. The owner greets you personally, and is visibly pleased at your choice to patronize his establishment.

"Welcome, your highness," he says. "I apologize for asking you to come here so early, but I needed your approval for something."

You chat with Olwen while waiting for the others to arrive. After quite a bit of time, a servant comes to inform you that your other guests are beginning to arrive. In fact, the first is being escorted up at the moment.

Archduchess Aleksandra steps through the doorway, dressed in her usual military attire.

"Thank you for the invitation, your highness," she says. "I wasn't expecting it quite so soon."

"Given how busy I am, I decided to take the opportunity when it presented itself," you say. "Thank you for joining me, please take a seat."

Aleksandra sits directly opposite to you and grins.

You get the feeling this is going to be worse than last time.

And that's it for today's thread. It's a little early and the ending's a bit blunt, but I'm not going to get a better stopping point if I keep going, so I'd rather call it a night now.

Beleaguered Prince Quest will return Friday July 29th at 7PM EDT. As a reminder, I'll be picking Relic Quest back up tomorrow at 7PM as well. As always, you can follow my twitter account @BeleagueredQM for updates and such.

Thanks for playing and goodnight. I'll see you all next time.

Fitting to level up Sovereign to 3 with a double success. Best ruler strikes again!

Very telling how Aleksandra wasn't interested in Meirion at all when she was still looking for Gwain and how aggressively forward she is now.
