Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest!

Today, we're doing something special: returning to controlling someone we haven't had a chance to hold the reigns of for quite some time, Akayama Kaito! Slayer of Shao Kahn, Hero of Earthrealm, Wielder of the Elements, Friend to Children, and Bedder of Sharp-Toothed Hybrids.

Ever since the defeat of Onaga, our hero has been quite busy. Working with Johnny Cage to set up the New Defenders, now successfully assembled in the crucible of battle against the armies of the Dragon King, our hero has been set with a task: finding a suitable location for a base for the future team of heroes. Every team needs a base of operations, after all. After ensuring that everyone made it home after the invasion, Kaito and the crew of the Dragon Wing, along with its lovely captain Mileena, have been sailing the realms, from Edenia to Outworld to beyond, searching for a good place to set up their new headquarters.

But perhaps the best route will be to head back to where it all started so long ago...

Damashi, why are you running on a Sunday?
Because I have off tomorrow! And I took friday and saturday night for some me-time.

For today's thread, I'm going to do something I've never done before and allow you (that's right, YOU!) to decide where our story begins.

Where is Kaito, right now?

>A) The Dragon Wing is off the coast of Shang Tsung's island, with Kaito and Mileena overlooking the sight
>B) Lady Yanake's city of Xun-Koto, hanging out with Grandmaster Hanzo and Takeda

You have faced many challenges in your life. Against insurmountable odds, you've risen to them each time, and each time you've walked away with your life. Demons, gods, conquerors---all have been defeated. Your life is far from normal, and the strange is now commonplace, but you accepted this long ago. Now, the world you once lived in is comparatively tame and boring to the ones you sail across on your magic boat. Of course, where would a man be without his friends and crew? And a woman by his side, of course.

Although, at this moment, things are a little hectic.

Mileena pushes you up against the wall, her grip on your collar nearly choking you. Her breathing is hot and heavy and her eyes burn a bit more brightly than usual. She gets that look when she wants something, and what she wants is quite apparent.

But you're not quite as passive as you used to be when it comes to passion with her. You know better now that she likes a good fight to be put up. Grabbing her wrists, you twist her around until she is the one up against the wall with you pressed up against her back.

She growls in playful anger as she struggles against your grip.

"What? Wasn't dinner good enough?" you ask with a smile. "I thought Nemo outdid himself."

"I've had tastier dishes," Mileena says, her long tongue licking her large fangs. "And I didn't get DESSERT!"

She brings up both of her legs and plants them on the cabin wall, pushing back with all of her might. This successfully pushes you onto the floor and she rolls away, getting up on all fours and looking at you as she opens her mouth, appearing very much like a predatory cat.

"And I always get dessert when I want it..." she says as she slyly crawls towards you.

>A) When she pounces, throw her onto the dresser

You get up to an elbow before Mileena pounces, but you were prepared for this. You grab her as she leaps atop you, rolling to your side and throwing her up onto the nearby dresser. This makes a considerable noise as she hits the wood, and you're up on your feet in an instant to follow her.

Shaking her head, she pushes off and tackles you down to the floor. You wrap your arms around her as her nails scratch your back, both of you now wrestling on the ground. She wraps a leg around you but you manage to pin her arm to the floor as she snaps her teeth mere inches away from your face. The struggle for dominance begins as you and she spend the next several minutes rolling around, trying to get each other into a submissive pose. All the while, articles of clothing are slowly removed (or as is often the case, torn off) as your match continues.

Mileena rakes at your back, making you wince a bit, so you push her up against the wall and place your hand against her shoulder, keeping her in place while you work on removing a very, very stubborn boot from her leg. She's not making it easy for you, as she kicks out and wriggles in your grasp, attempting to be free.

For you and her, it's all part of the game; either of you can remove your own clothing, but removing each other's is always meant to be a challenge.

Giving her a taste of her own medicine, you bite down on her neck. Not enough to draw blood, like she likes to (but then again, she doesn't have to bite hard to do so) but enough to make her let out a throaty moan. You assault her neck, making her want to stop fighting for a moment, long enough to pull off her boot and cast it aside. Her newly-bare foot finds the small of your back as she holds you, her fingers digging into your shoulder and hair as you continue to lavish attention upon her neck.

Mileena attempts to push away from the wall again, but you've got her pinned in place. Frustrated at this, she resorts to biting you on the shoulder. You let out a sharp gasp as she does this. "Awww, did I hurt you?" she asks in mock-sympathy. "Poor little baby..."

"I'd ask you to kiss it, but that might only make it worse," you tease her back.

"Why don't you find out?" she says, pulling you in for a rough, passionate kiss.

'So glad she grew lips,' you think to yourself as you hold her tightly.

Suddenly...

Suddenly, she breaks the kiss and gives you a smile before rearing back her head and slamming her forehead against yours!

This causes you to lose focus and stumble backwards, whereupon she pushes your onto the floor. Thankfully it is carpetted and not hard, otherwise your head would have gotten hit a second time, but it still hurts. She lands on top of you and takes advantage of your wounded state to tear open your shirt.

It's usually like this with her: get an edge, then she escalates it to another level. You rub your head as she begins to pull off your pants.

"The head, 'Leena?" you say, groaning a bit.

"Oh, shush," she says, finally getting you the way she wants. "You've had worse. I didn't even use my sais tonight."

"I think I'm going to have a bad bruise in the morning..." you mutter, feeling it.

"What else is new?" she asks in a husky voice. "Now then, just lie back and be my little plaything..."

You continue to rub your head, even as other sensations begin to take forefront in your mind. Even though you always end up a little bit bruised, battered and cut up, date night is definitely the highlight of your week. It's always worth it for her.

As she slowly moves, picking up speed the further along the night goes, you simply lay back and enjoy...

>...

The next morning, you wake up and stretch, yawning a bit. Your limbs are a bit sore and you're a little bit groggy due to your throbbing head. You look around for Mileena and find that she isn't in bed with you, but in front of the nearby mirror, cleaning herself. Specifically brushing her large fangs with a small toothbrush you gave to her as a gift from Earthrealm as part of a joke, but she actually found it very nice.

You sit up in bed and reach for a bowl of water on the nearby nightstand. Using it and conjuring up a little bit of magic, you infuse it with healing properties and rub it on your head, then your neck, and shoulders, and arms, and back...

All the while, Mileena brushes her hair and looks back. "Sleep well?" she says with a smile, knowing full well the answer.

"I'm beginning to think you almost like the mornings after more than the nights," you say, cracking your neck.

"You know that's not true. They're not nearly as fun." She sets down the brush and walks over back to the bed, snuggling up to you once she is under the covers again.

You cuddle with her for a bit as the boat gently rocks side to side. She lets out a contented sigh as she holds you close, resting her head on your shoulder.

After a few minutes of silence, she says, "I know I don't say it enough while I'm tearing you to pieces, but... I love you."

You look at her and smile warmly, gently rubbing her shoulder as you reply, "I love you too."

She leans up to kiss you as you hold your edenian princess close, closing your eyes as you do. Still, even with a girl like her in your arms and your heart a-flutter in your chest, you don't forget that you've got plans for today.

Specifically, talking to Johnny. You're currently parked in his pool. 'Thank the Elder Gods his pool is massive,' you think as you get out of bed after several minutes. 'Of course, the Dragon Wing does displace most of its water.'

After getting dressed in some replacement clothes, you step out onto the deck and stretch your arms. The crew of the Dragon Wing are all scattered about, if not on the boat then near the pool or inside Johnny's condo. You approach the edge of the boat and look down into the pool to see Chomba lying on the bottom of the pool, basking in the water.

'I'd better call Johnny and tell him that there's a crocodile at the bottom of his pool,' you think as you chuckle to yourself.

Johnny isn't home. You arrived last night, thinking to surprise him, only to find out that he was actually not home, nor is Cassie. Deciding not to waste your date night, you make a wonderful dinner out of the food in his amazing fridge, with help from the ship's cook, Nemo.

Everyone is currently relaxing and lounging about. Gwyn, the harby, roosts atop the ship, preening her wings. The mermaid, Arika, didn't like the pool and as such is currently inside Johnny's aquarium.

He's going to have quite a few surprises when he comes home.

Hopping up onto the side of the ship, you look down and see several crewmen attempting to make use of Johnny's grill. First Mate Finn is suntanning, having witnessed other Earthrealm girls doing the same, while Okaru the Owl perches on the condo roof. Monte, the monkey boatswain, is in Johnny's movie room, looking through the DVDs and Blu-Rays, attempting to discern the nature behind these strange shiny disks. Meanwhile, Biggs and Wedge are arguing over who gets to sit in the nicest pool chair, each attempting to pull rank over the other. You walk up and sit in it, taking the option away from them, as Elvis hops up into your lap.

You let out a small 'Oof!' as he does. He's getting bigger. You remember that, as an edenian mastiff, when he is fully grown he'll be as large as a man. When that happens, you hope he won't try hopping up on you again.

You take out your phone and give Johnny a call. After ringing a few times, he picks up.

"Kaito baby, what's up?"

"Hey Johnny. I'm back in Earthrealm. I actually arrived last night."

"Oh, where are you? You can drop by my place if you like."

At that moment, Butoro the tigrar shokan body-slams into the pool, displacing quite a bit of water. The tarkatan, Ugly, is splashed by this and roars as he jumps into the water himself to get revenge.

"Yeah... I'll keep that in mind, Johnny."

"So, where are you?" you ask him.

"With the old ball an' chain," he replies. "Special Forces HQ."

"When will you be home?"

"Oh, I don't know. We're going over a lot. Lots of reports, lots of paperwork. Things to get the team ready and official by Government standards, you know."

"Well, on that note, I haven't found a good base location yet."

"No?" he says, growing contemplative. "You know... I just had a thought last night. I was looking at a picture last night, taken on the docks in China of the night we met. You remember back then?"

"Well, it wasn't so long ago for me as it was for you," you reply.

"Right, right. Anyway, I thought, 'What about Shang Tsung's island?' What do you think?"

You pause. 'Shang Tsung's island...' You haven't been there since the first tournament. "I don't know," you reply after thinking for a few moments. "Are you sure it's still there?"

"Has to be! I mean, it got hectic towards the end after Liu Kang won, but the island itself should still be there. Maybe some old buildings, maybe some good loot? Who knows."

"It's not a bad idea," you tell him. "The island exists between Earthrealm and Outworld..."

"Making it well-hidden and a good place to deploy from. Think you could check it out?"

"It'd be very weird to travel back there," you admit. "But who knows? Maybe it'll be a good trip."

"Alright, let me know how it goes."

"Yeah," you tell him. A window breaks nearby as two crewmen accidentally fall out. The brothers Lor-Kai and Rambolt are arguing over a particularly comfortable pillow from the living room.

"What was that?" he asks on the other end of the line, and you're about to reply when you look up on the deck of the ship and see Mileena walking out, wearing a bikini that leaves very little to the imagination when it comes to her beautiful body.

"Expect a mess when you come back home," you tell him, and then hang up before he can reply.

You look up at her as she pushes her hair off to one side and sees you looking, then poses for your eyes.

Standing up and setting Elvis aside, you watch Mileena jump down and you approach each other. "I like that suit on you," you tell her, giving her an appreciative look up and down.

"You'd like it more if it wasn't on me," she purrs, holding the back of your head.

"I was just talking to Johnny," you change the subject, "and he gave me an idea: Shang Tsung's island."

Mileena blinks a few times. "The island..."

Studying her reaction, you watch as she thinks those words over. You and she both have a complicated history with the sorcerer; he created her, after all. Both of you have the distinction of killing him at different points. But you are the only one to have been to the island; you met Mileena later on, afterwards.

"What do you think?" you ask her.

"Perhaps it warrants investigation," she admits. "I'm surprised we didn't think of it."

"Honestly, so am I. But it's where my adventure started, not counting the docks in Hong Kong; it's where I learned about Outworld and almost died when Tortek stabbed me."

Your expression suddenly sours as you remember your tarkatan friend. Mileena cups your cheek and makes you look at her. "I know you miss him," she whispers.

"It's alright," you reply. You shake your head and decide to change the subject again, wanting to focus on the now instead of the then. "Say, how would you like a night on the town with me?"

"Here? In Earthrealm?" she says, a bit taken offguard. "Won't people react badly to me? And what about the crew? You trust them to stay here?"

"I trust them if you trust them," you shrug. "Just order them not to burn the house down or leave."

Mileena thinks for a moment. "Well, I have always wanted to see Earthrealm..."

"Perfect then!" you say. "Let's see if Cassie has some clothes you can use."

"And my face?"

"Plenty of people wear fashionable scarves," you tell her, waving away any concern. "If anyone asks, and I don't think they will, we'll just say you're a foreigner. Hell, it's not a lie, really."

"Alright. I'll go take a look," she says, a bit excited at the idea. "But I don't think she'll have anything in my size."

"Maybe we can do a bit of shopping," you suggest. "It'll be fun."

She leaves your side and rounds up the crew, telling them to behave and not to attract too much attention. The people of Earthrealm can be scared of those from other realms ever since the invasion and may give them trouble if they wander off. They give their captain their word and she goes to get some clothes.

As you make preparations, Mileena comes down the stairs. "What do you think?" she asks.

She's dressed rather casually, if a bit mismatched, and so you take her back up and look for a different shirt. Cassie's wardrobe is large, thankfully (she IS Johnny's daughter, after all) and as such you're able to find loose enough clothes for her. No bras, obviously, but that's not much of a problem.

'I wonder what Cassie would think if she came in right now...' you think as you help her get dressed.

Mileena is almost giddy as you take her out the front door. You stop only a moment to pick up some cash from Johnny's table---you're certain that few places accept koins as currency here.

"Where to first?" she asks, wrapping the scarf around her lower face.

You take her on a walk through the streets, heading towards the famous boardwalk. She often stops to examine curious things; the infastructure of your home realm is, of course, much different from that of the psuedo-asian-medieval barbarian-times realms that you oftne find yourself in. She has many questions about all manner of things; traffic, how cars work, the electrical power grid as well as cultural things including clothes, food and more.

You eventually reach the boardwalk. It is a bright and sunny day, and people are everywhere. Tourists, locals, performance artists and more, as well as street vendors. You stop by a few places and get some food as well as more appropriate and matching clothing.

"I'm surprised the clothing is so revealing," she says. "Are you sure everyone isn't trying to pretend to be edenian?"

"No, that's just summer swimwear," you tell her. "Trust me, it's normal."

After shopping briefly, she takes you by the hand to look at all manner of sights up and down the boardwalk over the course of a few hours. You show her as much as you can.

It's strange how endearing it is. You love the girl and she is undoubtedly a woman of power and grace, but her reactions to simple things like cotton candy and tee-shirts evokes imagery of a child experiencing things for the first time. 'I should take her to a water park,' you think as you watch her play an arcade game for the first time, grinning like a fool as you do.

"They don't have anything like any of these in Outworld," she says as she plays Galaga.

"Well, maybe one day, if they can get out of the dark ages," you shrug. "Maybe we could introduce technology to Edenia."

"Would that be wise?" she asks.

You look around. "Hard to say... Technology has a lot of positives, but there are downsides, too. Some people's whole lives are dominated by it and they never go outside."

"What a dull existence," she muses. She then loses her last life and pouts.

You take her to a nice, but not too pricey, place that has private boothes. There, she can eat without others staring. A variety of dishes are ordered, and contrary to what some may believe, Mileena has very good table manners when she wants to. She uses a fork and knife on her steak as opposed to just chomping down on it. She's an edenian, or part edenian, after all.

As you sit with her and look at her across the candle-lit table, you catch her look up at you and you both smile. You hold her hand across the table and run your thumb along its backside.

You think about how lucky you are to have ended up with such an amazing woman, but then another thought springs up from the depths, an unpleasant one: she wasn't the only woman who had eyes for you.

'Turana...'

You think about the former sphinx and your last confrontation with her; it turned violent. She was captured and questioned. Her masters, the Egyptian deities, allied with Onaga and her armies attacked Xun-Koto. It was a distraction, and ever since her forces have pulled back to the city she built.

You haven't seen her since.

How is she, you wonder? The same curiosity Mileena is showing for Earthrealm is something that Turana once wanted to experience with you. She wanted to see your world and learn about it with you, just as Mileena is doing now...

"Kaito," she says, getting your attention. "What's wrong? You've been staring blankly for minutes."

"Oh... Nothing," you say, waving away with a smile.

She isn't convinced. "You're thinking about her, aren't you?"

"Am I that easy to read?"

"Like an open book," she says. At first you might be worried she's upset you're thinking about another woman while being with her, but she anticipated that too. "I'm not angry. She's important to you."

"I was just thinking about how she wanted to experience Earthrealm like this," you say. "It's a shame... what she's done."

"It is," Mileena admits. "But maybe, one day, she can. With us."

You rub the back of her hand. "We can hope."

After leaving with her, you take her to a small amusment area and get on a ferris wheel. At the top, the wheel stops and you two get a good look at the setting sun. Mileena cuddles up next to you and you hold her close as you both sit and watch the last of the sun's rays shine over the clouds and the water.

"Will we leave tonight?" she asks.

"Maybe tomorrow morning," you say after thinking a bit. "Shang Tsung's island isn't going anywhere."

She places her hand on your chest and simply enjoys your company and you hers.

When you are walking home (well, to Johnny's home) you pause when you see three police cars driving by with their sirens blaring, heading in the same direction.

"Oh, no," you mutter.

Running back with Mileena close behind, you see them parked outside the condo, with the police setting up outside.

"Johnny's not going to be happy," you say.

"Get back, sir, this is a dangerous area," the officer says, pushing you a bit.

"But that's Johnny Cage's condo and I'm his quest and---"

Suddenly, another officer holds up a megaphone. "Attention! All interdimensional persons or entities must exit the residence immediately and submit to law enforcement!"

Suddenly one of the windows breaks as Sashar, the kathar rogue, stands in the window. "You think I take orders from you! I am Sashar, the Swift!" He waves his rapier around as Jon of Haven pulls him back inside.

"Oh hell," you mutter. "This is bad."

A group of people are beginning to form outside, holding up their phones and recording.

The officer again pushes you back. "I'm sorry, but this is dangerous. Alright, let's get a perimeter up already! Keep these people back!"

"I should've figured that people would react like this if they caught glimpse of a shokan in Johnny's backyard," you say to Mileena as you both walk away.

"Well, let's just leave," she offers. "They can't stop us if they wanted."

"There might be another way..." you think aloud.

Before an interdimensional incident occurs, you try and think fast!

Running up to the front door, you hold up your hands. "Wait! Hear me! Officers, this is all a misunderstanding!"

"Sir, step away from the door," the man with the megaphone says.

"No, you don't understand! I'm Johnny Cage's new, uh... publicist!" You think hard for a second. "This is... A PROMOTION!" you shout as inspiration strikes you. "Yes, that's all this is! A promotional cast get-together for Johnny Cage's new film! The men and women inside this condo are merely... actors! Auditioning!"

"Is this an audition or a promo?" one of the cops asks, skeptical.

"Uh... Both!" you say. Suddenly, Sierra Finn and Rambolt appear in the window, looking down while she holds a cutlass. "For his new... Action... Adventure... Fantasy... Pirate film!"

The cops look at each other as murmurs make their way through the crowd. The officers remain skeptical. "Sir, there is a boat parked in Johnny Cage's pool."

"ALL PART OF THE FILM!" you say. "It's to help get the actors in character!" You cough. "Now, I know what you're thinking... it's very unconventional to have actors audition in full costume and makeup at Johnny Cage's home. Well, that's because... this is also going to be his directorial debut, and he's the lead producer!"

The cops look around again. One of them asks, "So what's the name of the film?"

"What?"

"The name of the movie!"

"Uh, well, that's..."

Mileena stands in the crowd, watching with amused eyes.

"It's, uh... 'Dragon Wing: Crew of the Lost Realms.' It's, that is... a fantasy... about a crew of pirates from different worlds, like Outworld and, uh, other places! That's why monsters are inside, but it's all costumes and makeup. Special effects!"

The officers seem to be somewhat convinced, and that's when a flashy red car drives up. The driver door opens up and Johnny Cage steps out to cheers as he waves at the crowd. He approaches his front door and gives a few smiles, waves and thumbs-up.

"Kaito, what the hell is going on," he mutters out of the side of his mouth as he smiles for the cameras.

"You're, uh... directing a pirate movie."

"The hell I am," he says, when suddenly the media runs up.

"Johnny! Johnny! A comment on this new film---are you going to star as well as direct?" "Johnny! What's the budget going to be? When do you start filming?" "Johnny! Johnny! Can we get an estimate on the release date!"

"No comment, no comment for now, I think tonight's theatrics have gone a bit far. That's enough, let's go inside," he says, pushing you into the door. You look out into the crowd and don't see Mileena.

Johnny closes the door. "Kaito!"

"I know, I know, I know," you tell him.

Johnny points at the living room, where most of the crew are currently sitting and staring.

"I know," you tell him. "Look, the cops were here, I had to... improvise."

"By saying that it's a new movie?" he says. "I mean, points for ceativity, really, but the energy I'll have to expend to make this go away is going to give me a killer headache. Now the tabloids are going to circulate rumors about my 'new film' and... I need a drink."

You follow him into the kitchen. "I thought you were with Sonya."

"I caught a flight back when I heard you say I would need to expect a mess. I didn't think THIS would be the mess you were talking about." He opens up a bottle of beer and takes a swig. "Christ, just when I thought I was getting out of this business."

"Wait, you aren't in movies anymore?"

"I mean, I could be, if I wanted. I just was shifting my energies into, you know, managing a team of super-heroes. That's a demanding task, you know, with lots of government oversight and logistics..." Johnny pauses as he looks out his kitchen window. "Is that a crocodile in my pool?"

"No, not yet. I took Mileena out for a night on the town."

"Show her some of the sights?"

Mileena walks inside through the back door. "Yes, and I had a wonderful time."

Johnny pauses. "Are those Cassie's shorts?"

You quickly step in front of him and turn him around. "ANYWAY, like I was saying, we'll be leaving in just a bit for the island. Maybe tomorrow morning."

"Alright. Well, I'll worry about this movie stuff later."

"I'll help you make it if you like."

You pat him on the shoulder. "Well, tell them to sit tight for just a little bit. I'll order some food and we'll leave in the morning. Don't worry, the people of the local community were just as confused."

After ordering several large pizzas with various toppings and tipping the delivery boy with a golden koin, you spend the night hanging out with Johnny while he hosts the crew. The pirate hunters of the Dragon Wing are a rowdy bunch, and by the end of the night some more property is damaged. Movies, drinking games and more are shared and enjoyed, songs are sung and fun is had by all.

Though modern things like board games and video games are hard for them to wrap their heads around, common things like music, drink and food (particularly food) are able to be enjoyed by the slightly technologically-impaired crew. All the while Mileena sits with you and helps to keep them in line, while also enjoying her first taste of pizza.

Turns out she likes pineapple instead of meatlovers, who woulda thunk?

Questionable taste aside, you wake up the next morning, having crashed on the couch. Various members of the crew are strewn about; Chomba lies on his back as Elvis sleeps on his tummy and Monte is hanging from the chandalier by his feet with a half-full bottle of beer in one hand.

You look down at Mileena's head resting on your leg and you brush her hair before giving her a kiss on the forehead. After disentangling yourself, you find Johnny in his study making a few calls to repair servicemen.

"Remind me to never host a party for your crew again," he says. "Great group but the property damage is too much. My maid is going to throttle me."

"Yeah... sorry. They party hardy. You should've seen them at Queen Sindel's palace."

You sit in one of his chairs. "So, anything interesting going on with the planning side of things? Getting the team together?"

"Well, the team's together, or it was. Now we're just doing other stuff, getting authorization, boring government stuff. Proper protocol. You know, they talk about stuff like 'the team brand' and logos and stuff, and SOP's and DDP's and ARP's and who-gives-a-damn-P's. I think once we find a base things will roll along much more quickly."

"You really think the island would be a good spot?"

"Hell, I don't know. But it's an island, which is cool. I've always wanted an island lair. We could have big buildings, like an observation dome and a platform for aircraft; all kinds of stuff. We could really modernize that island, you know, make it feel like home."

"You think anyone is going to be there already?" you ask. "I mean, it's been twenty years since we last went."

"Nah... Well, hell, I don't know. Shang's dead, right?"

"Twice over now."

"So I doubt anything too bad will be out there. Maybe some spooky skeletons like that one you told me about."

"Don't remind me," you chuckle. "You aren't coming with us?"

"I gotta catch the flight so I can sit through another powerpoint presentation and grow ever-so-closer to blowing my brains out. Cassie used to tell me about the military and their death-by-powerpoint days; now I can sympathize with her."

"Well, I'll be sure to keep in touch," you tell him. "We'll head off in just a bit. And if this island pans out, maybe we'll get the team back together and we can centralize everything."

"Well, yeah, but it'll take a bit of time. We'll need time to construct the base, and moving materials out to that island is going to be tricky until we set up a portal. We might need your boat."

"Hey, my boat barely carried a giant woman back to the Lin Kuei, I'm not letting you drive construction equipment on it."

"A giant woman?" he blinks a few times. "Was she hot?"

"You're a married man."

After rousing the crew and making them clean up some of the mess, you round them up on the boat and prepare to leave before some other incident with the local authorities happens. Standing on the deck, you summon the Staff of Raiden and plant it on the wood.

You close your eyes and think about Shang Tsung's island. Smoke surrounds the ship and soon it is completely encased. The ship goes from gently rocking in the pool to now sitting in the Lost Sea, sailing forward out of the cloud.

When you open your eyes, you look out upon a sight you have not seen for a very long time. The island looks just as you remember it: its tallest peaks shrouded in clouds, its hills covered in thick jungle and it has an overall appearance of being otherworldly.

Mileena stands alongside you. "So, this is where the fate of Earthrealm was changed forever when Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung, robbing Outworld of its tenth victory, causing Shao Kahn's defeat when he would attempt to invade."

"It changed a lot of fates," you nod. "Like mine. If I had never come here from that little invitation, I wouldn't have ever done any of this... including meeting you."

You meet her gaze and hold her hand as she squeezes your fingers.

"And the boat has at last returned to the island as well," she notes.

"Hey, yeah. Funny how that all worked out, isn't it?"

Suddenly, she has a strange reaction when she grabs her forehead and falls down to a knee. "Ah!" she gasps.

You lean down. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know," she says, sounding a bit weary. "My head... I feel, strange, somehow it is... I do not know..."

"Is something wrong? Something with the island?"

She pauses for a moment. "No... I think I am alright now." You help her stand up and she shakes her head, rubbing her eyes. "For a moment there I was overcome with something strange, as though some kind of spell or weariness had come upon me. I cannot describe it, but I felt tired and it was as though I was... dreaming."

"Dreaming?"

"I do not know," she admits. "But it is gone now."

"Well, are you certain you are okay?" you ask, concerned.

"I am fine, I promise you," she says, taking your hand again. "Let us travel to the island, yes?"

Despite assurances to the contrary, you are nothing if not a pragmatic and worrisome individual, rare to let signs slip past you. You keep the boat in place as you consult the others, particularly Mileena, as to what her strange headache and the sensations that followed it could mean, but none of them can offer solutions outside of vague suggestions.

"Perhaps it is simply the wind of this place," Kojiro, the navigator, says. "Men have attempted to sail the Lost Sea before, and it is not so named without a reason. Monsters and madness have claimed ships in these waters; stray too far from the island, and there is no telling what we may discover in this endless ocean---an expanse where non can know where Earthrealm ends and Outworld begins, nor where Outworld ends and Earthrealm begins."

You trust your navigator's word, but it still seems strange to you. Nobody else had any such reaction---only Mileena. But it doesn't come again, even after an hour of waiting, and so Mileena is quick to wave away that anything is wrong.

"If you say so," you shrug. "Still, the island is strange... We should be cautious."

"Alright, let's head out to the island then," you say, and the usual crew of away team members assembles. You pause when Mileena stands near the longboat.

"What?" she asks.

"Well... Maybe you should stay here."

The crew silently go about their tasks. Mileena places her hands on her hips. "What? You think me in danger?"

"Well, I don't know. Maybe we should just be safe about it."

"I'm going," she says, getting into the longboat. "And that's final. I want to see the island where so much happened."

"Mileena, I'm just worried. Maybe it was nothing, but what if it wasn't? I just have a... I don't know, a bad feeling about this."

"Then let's go find out what is causing it," she says firmly.

You relent. "Alright. Kojiro, come with us; bring a blank map to catalog the island."

He bows his head and gets his materials ready.

You climb into the boat alongside Tsuga, Buturo, Kojiro, Chomba and Ensign Ricky, whom was not worth mentioning until this point.

Gwyn flies overhead as Arika swims underneath the boat. Jon of Haven takes command of the vessel as he and Sierra Finn watch you row away towards the island.

"This brings back memories," you say as you and the others row. "Of couse, there were more hooded monks and fewer friends on these boats."

Once you hit shore, you set up the boat and prepare to explore. You look nearby and see torn-up flags of the Elder God dragon symbol; the welcoming flags from twenty years ago, torn up and flapping in the wind.

Tsuga takes out a pistol and keeps it at the ready as Gwyn flies by overhead, scouting the area. She does a circle and then lands. "I see nothing," she says. "Some buildings off in the distance. Wind smells a bit foul; might be corpses on this island."

"Would make sense," you say, looking at a strange crab scuttling into the water. "Let's see where we go from here."

You look at Mileena; she seems fine, so far.

You decide to explore the beaches and get a feel for the size of the island; see if it has changed at all. Your group walks along, alert and ready for anything. As you walk, Kojiro takes notes on his parchment.

Mileena walks alongside you. Occasionally, you give her a look, just to make sure she is alright. So far, so good, so it seems.

Gwyn flies down. "There's something up ahead," she says. "I think it is dead. Something washed up."

You look at her, then at Mileena, before walking up towards it. The corpse you see smells foul; it is covered in seaweed and rotting quite profusely. Small crabs scuttle about its decaying flesh and bones. Whatever it is, or was, it has a long narrow mouth with many teeth. The rest is too obscured by seaweed and stinking flesh to figure out if it was a land or sea animal. But it was big, that's for certain.

"What is it?" you ask them, but the crew have no answers; not even Kojiro, who has sailed Outworld's many seas since childhood.

Some planks of wood are found near its body. Not driftwood; planks, like those of a ship.

"Perhaps it washed up here from a boat," Buturo says.

"No," Tsuga replies. "No, it was too big to be on a boat. Attacked it, likely. They probably killed it and it washed up here."

"Sometimes, things are lost in the ocean," Kojiro says in a low voice. "Sometimes, things are meant to be lost. Those things find their way to the Lost Sea... The waters surrounding this island are not natural. It could be from anywhere..."

The level of mysticism he speaks of the Lost Sea makes even you feel a bit unsettled. If you do ever make your base here, you'll have to put up signs for no swimming or fishing, clearly.

You look over at Mileena and see her rub her forehead a bit. She notices and then stops, acting normally once more.

"Tracks," Chomba says, sniffing the ground with his large snout. "Not so old... Animal, maybe?"

You look and see small footprints in the sand, belonging to tiny feet.

After walking further up the beaches for a while, you come upon another strange sight: a tube. It is metal, almost like a drainage pipe or a sewage pipe sticking out of the mountainside, and small droplets of blue-green liquid leak out of it. A glowing pool has collected in the dirt underneath it and a trail leads downward out to the sea.

There is a corpse in front of the pipe; bloated, ugly and misshapen. You approach it and turn it over, finding it to be vaguely feminine but monstrous, almost like some kind of tarkatan, with a vile mouth and sharp hands and a twisted face.

And yet, there is something… familiar about it.

Mileena stares at the dead thing with wide eyes. "That... is me," she whispers.

You look back at her. "What?"

"You were in the Flesh Pits when I awoke," she says, pointing at the corpse. "That... that is a failed clone. That is me."

You look back at the body and realize she is right... It is. Shang Tsung had several tubes of clones in various states of completion, and some were simply grossly monstrous and ghastly in appearance; they were failed hybrids. Like this one.

The other crewmen look on as you stand up and approach the captain. "There were no Flesh Pits on this island," you tell her. "They were all in Shao Kahn's citadel."

"I know what I see, and what I see is a failed tarkatan clone." She folds her arms. "We should---"

She stops as she feels another pang of confusion run through her, causing her to rub her forehead in frustration. As you attempt to hold her steady, she shakes her head. "I'm fine," she insists. "Let's continue."

Deciding not to venture further up the pipe, you proceed up the nearby mountain, following a winding trail that leads to a large gate. You recognize this as one of the entry way gates into Shang Tsung's palace courtyard. This stretch of road was gravel and stone, but is now covered in nature; the green of the earth has taken it back. Vines creep up walls, statues lie broken and pillars are fallen and ruined.

"This place is a mess," you say, pushing open the large red door and beholding the garden-like wild courtyard beyond. "But I guess twenty years with no caregiver will do that."

The others follow behind as you step onto the rocky road that leads towards the palace. The structure itself, as you can see from where you are, is just as decrepit and ruined, with large holes in the roof and broken spires and windows.

"Perhaps we should see what the palace holds," Mileena suggests as she walks up by your side. "It may---"

Suddenly she lets out a sharp gasp again as she stumbles backwards as though hit by an invisible blast of confusion; she grabs her head and groans in pain. "Gaaah! Something! ARGH!"

You try to hold her steady but she throws your arms off of her as she falls against a nearby rock. The crew go to help their captain but are similarly rebuked as she writhes in unexplainable pain.

"Mileena!" you shout her name, running to her side. "What is it? How can we help?"

"My head," she grunts. "I cannot..."

Her voice trails off and she grows very still, kneeling with her head turned towards the ground.

"Mileena?" you whisper, kneeling down to her. "Is it gone?"

She responds by suddenly and violently bringing up a fist that connects with your face, knocking you to the ground. She then whirls around and looks at her crew, eyes blazing as she acrobatically leaps up and lands on Chomba's head. She dinger her nails into his large reptillian nostrils and pulls back, causing him to open his mouth and grunt in pain.

"Captain!" Tsuga shouts, unable to aim his gun due to Chomba's mouth covering her. "What are you doing?!"

You get back on your feet as Mileena kicks off of Chomba's head, forcing him to fall forward and land on top of Tsuga. Buturo and Kojiro stand back as she lands near them, drawing her sai blades and hissing a warning.

"Mileena!" you shout. "You're not well! Whatever it is, fight it! I don't want to hurt you!"

She looks at you before dashing off towards the palace, leaping over another wall. As Buturo helps Chomba back up to his feet, you look on, more worried than ever. She was acting like she had just come out of the tank for the first time...

Gathering up the others, you all quickly run towards the palace. "What is wrong with the captain?" Buturo asks.

"I don't know," you reply, "but we're about to find out."

You kick down the door leading into the courtyard and then run up to the open doors to Shang Tsung's palace. It is a dismal and dreary place; once it was magnificent and decorated with all manner of finery and lavish furnishings, but no more.

You and the others burst in and look around, but she is nowhere to be found. You keep your ears open and they begin to pick up the sounds of thrashing, wood being broken and a pounding, as well as shouting.

You follow them to a door you have never seen before, one hidden behind a withered tapestry. It has been forced open, and leads to a winding staircase going downwards.

As you enter it, you hear the pounding growing louder, along with chains rustling and wood splintering.

"Stop! Stop it right now! I command you, you insolent fool of a wench! Stop it this instant!"

That voice...

You KNOW that voice!

Running down ahead of the others, you enter a private study. The walls are lined with books and candles, along with tables containing various skulls and jars and other odd sorcerous things, but that doesn't concern you. What does concern you is the sight of Mileena pounding on a door and tearing into it with her sai and fangs in an attempt to get it open. It is a thick door, with heavy bolts and chains upon it.

And nearby, admonishing her, is an old and feeble man: Shang Tsung.

"Shang!" you call out his name.

He looks at you and scowls with more scorn than most in all of the realms could conjure up. "You... Oh, of course, it simply HAD to be YOU."

If memory serves, he told Kotal Kahn about it, but never mentioned Shang himself. He told his sister Sanra about it as well.

To Kotal:
>"Everything was old, ruined and abandonned, but I found a magical artifact that allowed me to come back," Cao replies, not lying so much as omitting parts of the truth. "I could not bring it with me, but here I am."

To Sanra:
>
"An island," he replies. "I found a way back with some help." He pulls away and gives her a worried look. "What about you?"

I don't know if Cao would have ever brought it up to Kaito, so I'm fairly certain Kaito doesn't know about it.

Eh, maybe. Still not too far of a jump between him telling Kotal and then it getting spread to the Defenders. I can see it being the reason Johnny thought of the island in the first place.

Turning towards Mileena, you watch as she claws and bites at the door. "Mileena, stop," you urge, holding up your hands.

When you get near her, she attempts to kick you. She violently resumes attacking the door.

You look at the sorcerer. "What have you done?"

"Me? I have done nothing! You are the one who brought HER," he points at the mad hybrid, "to this place!"

"And why wouldn't I?" you reply, getting near him. "What is on this island that would warrant me NOT bringing her, old man?!"

"This is my island, my property!" he says. "And of all the people in all of the realms, you two are most certainly NOT welcome! Now subdue her and take her out of here, before she ruins everything!"

You're having none of it. "You have ten seconds to explain what is going on before I curl up my hand and reacquaint it with your---"

Before you can finish the sentence, the mad dog that is the woman you love tears open the door, all but destroying what remains of it. The hinges fall off and the wood shatters as she claws through it, into a dark room beyond.

You look and see a dull green glow. Mileena saunters into the room, breathing heavily, as she looks upon several man-sized tanks of fluid.

Suspended in them are a dozen, perhaps more, clones of Mileena.

Your hands slowly drop along with your jaw as your eyes widen from taking in the sight.

"What have you done?" you ask him, dumbfounded.

Shang attempts to push past you. "Stop her, stop her! STOP HER YOU FOOL!"

You hold him back. "What is going on? Answer me, Shang!"

"STOP HER!" he cries again as she takes out her sai.

"I'm not doing a thing until you tell me what is happening, Shang! Why are there clones of Mileena in those tanks? Why is she going crazy?"

"You fool!" Shang spits in your face. He looks at the others. "At least you lot can stop her! Go!"

You drop the old man and take the men into the Flesh Pits, running up to Mileena. You try to grab her and pull her back, but she thrashes about and snarls. As Chomba wraps his arms around her in a great bear hug (or crocodile hug, if you will) she throws the sai at the central tank.

The blade hits the glass and it begins to crack. You watch as the crack spreads, each second widening before the entire tank collapses. Glass and green liquid surge outwards in all directions as the body inside is washed out onto the ground.

Mileena, still struggling as his happens, falls limp and quiet, as though she is no longer awake. You check her to ensure that she is alive, and she is, but unconscious.

You look over as the figure who was inside the tank begins to pick herself up. Slime drips off of her lithe form as she stands, her raven-black hair obscuring her face. Bringing up a hand, she wipes it away, revealing a face that, for all intents and purposes, looks exactly like Princess Kitana's. Save for her eyes---these blaze orange, like the Mileena you know.

She opens her eyes and looks upon you before giving a small smile. "At last," she says, stretching her arms out and yawning. "It was growing so cramped in that tank..."

She looks down and picks up the sai that was thrown. "I suppose I should thank the ones who freed me." Her eyes drift up to you. "A quick death, perhaps."

Shang pushes his way into the chamber. "Oh, you fools, now you've done it..." he mutters before making his way back to the exit, intent on getting the hell out of here.

You bring up an arm and create a barrier of stone using your earth powers to block the exit. The sorcerer scowls as you say, "Hold it right there, sorcerer! You're the one responsible for this mess, you're not going anywhere!"

As Shang slinks back against the wall, the Mileena clone walks forward. "You... You are powerful. That one," she points at the unconscious Mileena, "has many memories of you. She looked at you as an equal... Kaito."

"Explain what is happening," you say to both her and Shang.

"She is Mileena," the old man says. "As she was meant to be! She is the perfect clone that Shao Kahn desired, but I did not have the time to provide! And just as before, she was woken too soon! By you!"

"Enough out of you," she says to the old man. She turns her attention back to you again. "It sickens me that the half-breed at your feet polluted her body with you, but as I share her memories, I find that I have a certain... fondness for you and your power."

'Shared memories...' You hold up your hands. "And what are you going to do about it?"

"You may kneel before me and become my servant," she says, holding up her other hand. She summons up a second sai blade from your Mileena's side. "When I return to Outworld and claim my throne, you can rule with me. Not at my side, of course, but in a role that suits someone of your talents."

Her voice is Mileena's, her body is Mileena's, but the way she speaks, the intellect and malice dripping behind each word... Shang has done something to this clone. He said that this is Mileena 'as she was meant to be'... What could that mean? Cunning, evil, a true daughter to Shao Kahn? And how can she share memories with your Mileena?

"What did you do to her?" you ask.

"I was asleep, but she was awake. I no longer wished to be asleep, so I made her wake me up."

"Too soon!" Shang calls out. "You were meant to grow more!"

"I said enough!" she spits at him. "I'll deal with you later." She again looks back at you. "But first, you shall kneel before your new empress, queen and ruler."

"Sorry honey, but I've heard that song and dance before."

You raise your hand and blast forth a torrent of fire, intent on destroying this imperfect clone, but she teleports away in a burst of pink energy, appearing behind you and kicking you in the neck. She lands on her feet as you roll away, and when you're up again she's on you in an instant!

You block her first few viscious strikes as you remember what it was like to fight Mileena before she held back. She is powerful, and this new clone is no exception. The crew watch you two battle across the Flesh Pits, throwing kicks, punches and blocks as you attempt to use your powers against her, but she has powers of her own. She dodges, teleports, rolls and throws her sai blades, attacking as she laughs.

"Do you really think you can defeat me?"

"Wouldn't be the first time," you mutter, blocking a teleport kick with your forearms held in front of your face.

She flips back and lands before blasting two pink rays from her sais at you, which you dodge by turning into water and pooling elsewhere before reforming.

The New Mileena leaps up onto a table and smiles down at you as she pulls up her facemask. "I'm afraid this is where our 'relationship' ends, Kaito!"

"Yours and mine, maybe, but not me and the real Mileena."

"Soon you will see that the real Mileena is ME!" she says, leaping towards you with her blades leading the charge.

From the shadows, Shang Tsung watches, amused and chuckling softly.

You attempt to lead her towards Shang Tsung, as you tackle each other onto the ground between two of the tanks, but she plants her feet on your chest and bounces off, flipping up to the ceiling where she grabs the rocky surface and holds on, digging her nails and heels into the stone and dirt.

"I can't believe that pitiful mutant ever let you near her," she says as you stand up. "I'm going to work very hard on forgetting the memories she had of you."

"Your loss, baby," you say, taunting her a bit. "Frankly, I think she looks a hundred times better than you."

"Blind, or stupid?"

You walk over towards Shang, maintaining eye contact with her. "Better blind and stupid than ugly and evil."

>>409876

She springs off the ceiling towards you, whereupon you turn back into water and allow her to pass right through you, causing her to tackle Shang Tsung to the ground. She lands atop the sorcerer, who groans in pain, and pushes him away as she stands up.

"Come and face me, coward!" she calls out. "I'll destroy you, and then I'll destroy that despicable imperfect copy you brought with you!"

You reform behind one of the tanks as she stalks around the room. She calls out, "You think you and she know love? Children. Love is licking the blood of the fallen off of your blades! Love is seeing your enemies driven before you and taking their heads! Love is the screams of the anguished and the innocent!"

'Man, am I glad she woke up early,' you think to yourself.

Suddenly she pops up to your left and tries to stab you, but when you dodge, she breaks open another tank instead. A third clone washes out and slides nearby as she continues to try and attack you.

You charge in quickly and knee her in the gut, making her let out an "Oomph!" before delivering a fierce chop to the back of her head. She flips over and falls down as you turn and point your hand at her.

>>409954

Blasting her with a fireball, she slides across the floor, holding her side in pain. She gets back up onto her hands and knees.

"Kaito..." she whispers. "I... I'm hurt..."

You lower your hand as she whimpers, but then hesitate. "No, it's a trick."

She looks up at you with sad, sad eyes. "Kaito... Please, I love you..."

This makes you pause again, keeping your back to the third clone, who leaps upon you and bites your shoulder and neck. Her mouth is just like Mileena's was when she originally woke up, and now the perfect clone laughs as she gets up. "Fool!"

"Help me!" you shout to the crew.

"Tired of just watching," Tsuga says, taking out his pistols. He fires the flintlock firearms at the clone on your back, hitting her and making her fall off of you.

The evil clone, meanwhile, summons her sais and breaks more clone tubes. These other clones are all imperfect, like the third one, and soon rise.

"I control them all," she says with a large grin. "All of them, slaves to my will!"

All of the Mileena clones begin to hiss and cackle as they move in to attack you and the crew. Buturo grabs two of them and throws them aside as Chomba uses his large head to slam one into the wall before using his great bulk to pin her down.

Kojiro takes a moment to drag his captain, the real Mileena, back away from the fighting. When one of the clones attempts to grab him, he gets her by the neck and kicks her away.

Tsuga fires two more pistols before dropping them and drawing his sword. He swings at one of them, who catches his sword in her mouth, biting down on it. They push against each other as he grunts, "The things I've done on this ship..."

>>409992

The central Mileena clone advances, laughing maniacally. "It's over, Kaito. I have the power of numbers! You cannot defeat one Mileena, let alone a dozen!"

You look around at all the liquid from the tanks that has been released. "Numbers, maybe, but I've got powers you don't even know about!"

You focus and draw all of the water towards you, collecting it in front of you before blastint it towards her in a canon. This super-soaker water burst hits her squarely in the chest and sends her flying across the chamber, pushed up against the wall. Chomba and Buturo toss in a few clones who are similarly swept away and pressed against her.

As Kojiro fends off another clone, your Mileena begins to stir.

Keeping up the pressure on the water, you look back at the sorcerer. "How do we stop them, Shang? Talk, now!"

"All of them are blank," he says, picking himself up. "All but her. She has the implanted memories, the controlling mind. She---and your Mileena---are the only ones who can control the others!"

You stop the water and let them drop down. The evil clone picks herself up and looks at you. "Is... Is that your best, feeble one?"

>>410057

You crack your knuckles. "I wasn't even trying up until this point."

Bringing up a foot, you slam it onto the ground, creating a stone spike that impales one of the clones. You then bring your hands together and separate them, creating a hole under one of the others and causing her to fall into it, before clapping them together and slamming the hole shut, crushing her.

The evil clone watches with wide eyes as you methodically tear the others apart, unleashing your full potential against them. You have trained to hone your powers and now, against these dispensible, mindless clones, you can truly hold nothing back.

Tsuga, Buturo and Chomba step back as the clones die to your powers of earth.

The evil Mileena then grabs Ensign Ricky, whom was not worth mentioning until this point, and holds the blade up to his neck. "Stand down, or I shall destroy him!"

You raise your hand. "Now, now, let's not do anything hasty..."

A precise, single blast of water emerges from your palm, focused on her sai blade. You knock it out of her hands and she lets Ricky go. He scrambles behind the others and back into obscurity.

You then blast her other hand, knocking the sai out of it as well. Then, you continue blasting her with water, pushing her up against the wall, continually buildling pressure up and up and up until it knocks the wind from her lungs and tears the fabric of her clothing.

You then stop and let her fall. She is on her hands and knees as she looks up at you, eyes full of fear and awe. "That power... How... How?"

You shrug and crack your neck. "I train and I train, but very rarely do I find myself in a situation where I can really cut loose and how how powerful I've truly become. I was hoping to do it on Onaga, but that didn't pan out." You raise your hand again. "Tell me, which would you prefer? Water or fire?"

"Enough," you hear a voice say. You look back and see Mileena, your Mileena, approaching. She picks up her sais. "I'll finish her."

"Are you sure?"

"We're in each other's minds," she says, looking at her. "I can hear her thoughts. She's about to beg for mercy, but if she is given it, she'll attack you from behind."

"Lies!" the clone says.

You touch her shoulder. "I understand the sentiment, but let's do this together."

She looks into your eyes and warmly smiles as the clone on the floor reacts in disgust. "She can feel how I feel for you," she explains. "Clearly, she doesn't like it."

"I am what you were meant to be," she spits at Mileena. "I am your true self! You live in a deluded fantasy!"

"Perhaps I do, but at least I'll be the one who lives." You both hold up your hands as the clone shrieks. Mileena throws her Sai into the clone's neck and you blast her with a burst of water that could cut rock, effectively putting a hole in her head.

Mileena closes her eyes and rubs her forehead. "She's gone," she says, letting out a sigh. "Finally. I could hear everything she was saying and thinking. It was a mess..."

"Captain, are you alright?" Tsuga asks, walking up.

"I'll be fine, thank you," she says. She looks around at the dead bodies of the clones. "By the gods, love, how much aggression towards me did you work out on my clones?"

"Enough," you say. "But we've got plenty of time for you to give me more."

"Captain!" Chomba says, holding up Shang Tsung by the collar of his shirt. "I caught a sorcerer!"

"Let me down, you simple-minded salt-water-sucking reptile! I said release me!"

"Time to get to the bottom of this," you say, approaching him. Chomba drops him to the ground and the old man looks up at you distastefully.

"Ah... Kaito. Why must you be the source of all of my headaches?"

"You've got some explaining to do, old man," you say, grabbing him and pulling him up to his feet. "Why were you cloning Mileena?"

"Take your hands off of me! This is still my island, and I'll not be bullied! I'm a powerful wizard, I'll remind you!"

Mileena walks up behind you and laughs. "A powerful wizard that we both have killed, I'll remind you."

You let go, but with only one hand. You keep the other on his collar.

"Talk," you demand.

"Upstart damn warriors," he mutters. "I didn't invite you to my island."

"You never gave me permission to take your boat, either."

His eyes widen. "That's right! I didn't! You better not have damaged it!"

"It looks a hell of a lot better now than it ever did with you. But answer my first question: why were you cloning Mileena?"

Shang merely offers a non-apologetic shrug. "Because I wanted to."

You tighten your grip and shake his collar a bit. "Not good enough! What was your evil scheme, sorcerer?"

"Evil? Scheme?" He spits on the ground. "I tire of your self-righteous prattle, Akayama Kaito. I tire of your face, your voice, I tire of YOU!"

"And I'm getting tired of you interfering with my life!" you reply.

"You came to MY home!" he counters. "This is MY island!"

"Well, I could always do with it what I did with your boat: kill you and take it."

"Oh, yes, please, by all means," he rolls his white eyes, a barely noticable act in itself. "Go on, add to the tally marker list. Send me back to the Netherrealm for some more torture before I escape and come back. I still have a summer home in Outworld, you know, maybe you can kill me and take THAT, too!"

You cock an eyebrow and look at Mileena before turning back to him. "Don't try and play cute, sorcerer. You were literally cloning an evil version of Mileena."

"Well, she wouldn't have been if you hadn't ruined my experiment by bringing her here," he says, looking at Mileena. "You gave her a way to wake up early!"

"The hell were you planning on doing with her? And why Mileena?"

"She was the only genetic material I had available. I went through dozens of batches before I could once more refine the blood and make a perfect clone, as was originally intended. But the spells and the magic and the cloning process wasn't perfect... this lab isn't as good as the one I had under Shao Kahn, but I couldn't change that."

"You still haven't answered my question: why?"

"I'm GETTING to that, you impatient toad!" He sighs. "I was going to erase the implanted memories in the primary clone and install new ones. I was experimenting with hive-mind magic, inspired by the kytinn and the way their hive communicates... I was going to have an army of Mileenas, all controlled by one, central clone, loyal to me!"

"And then take your revenge on me and Mileena, you son of a bitch? Rule Outworld? Take over the realms?"

He all but shouts, "No! I wanted daughters to help take care of me and clean up my island, damnit!"

Well... You can't say you were expecting that.

"What?" you say, nearly stuttering. And again, you must ask, "What?"

Mileena can offer no words as well.

Shang reaches up and brushes off your hand. "You heard me! My island is filthy. Experiments lying around, the gardens aren't tended to, my beautiful home lies in ruin! I wanted it cleaned up! And then maybe I'd get a chance to relax."

"But you could just grow young again," you say. "By stealing souls."

"Bah," he waves his hand and the notion along with it. "Too much work. All they ever ended up doing is rising up against me. Besides, if I grew young again, all you or Liu Kang or that one," he points at Mileena, "would do is come along and beat up on me again. But are you going to beat up an old man, Akayama Kaito? Hahaha."

"I'm considering it."

"Well, do or don't then, I need to clean up this terrible mess you've made in my lab. All this glass and bio-fluid just gestating on the floor... disgusting. I need to dispose of the bodies now as well. Good work on that one."

"I don't understand, why the hive mind?" you ask him.

"Makes things easier. One central copy controls all of the others. Then I could just grow Mileenas and have them all be blank slates."

"What the hell were you going to do once they had cleaned up the island?"

"Have them take care of me," he says nonchalantly. "I'm an old man, you know."

"A sick old man," Mileena says. "You'd enslave all of these clones of me just so you could live in comfort?"

"Yes, yes, I'm so evil and vile," he says, walking up to one of the tanks. "Oh, look, you didn't kill this one."

One tank remains with a clone inside of it, covered in wrappings. You approach it with Mileena and look inside, seeing that it resembles her when she originally woke up.

"Well, if you're going to get rid of this one too, just clean it up yourself," Shang mutters as he walks off to fetch his broom. "You blocked the door with stone. I assume you don't intend on all of us to live down here forever, because I doubt you'd like to take the sewer exit."

"Is this one blank?" you ask him.

"Yes, yes, completely blank, no mind to speak of. Now where did I put that..." he trails off as he mumbles.

The crew keep an eye on him as you look at Mileena. "Can you feel her?" you ask.

She looks up at the glass. "I don't know... I think I can. It's strange... It's like she is asleep."

After a few moments of silence, you turn away from the tank and lift up a hand, using your power to lower the stone you used to block the doorway. But before Shang can leave, you stop him.

"Hold it," you say, causing him to let out an annoyed sigh.

"Now what? More questions?"

"Well, you explained yourself... more or less. I'm thinking I should do the same."

"Oh, this should be rich," Shang muses.

"We came to your island because we want to establish a base here for a new team, the next generation of heroes."

"Absolutely not! This is my island! Not while I live!"

"What if I said we'd be willing to clean it up and restore it to good working condition?"

He pauses and pensively strokes his white Fu Manchu beard. "Continue."

"Our team, the New Defenders---"

"Stupid name."

"---is in need of a base. We have the people, and we've already successfully defeated Onaga, the Drago---"

"The Dragon King, yes yes, I know my history," he interrupts you again. "Don't patronize me, Akayama Kaito. I know Onaga's title."

You narrow your eyes. "You know, I'm starting to think I still have some left over issues from you killing my father."

"Oh, please, if that were true you'd have killed me already. You made peace with his spirit when you killed me in my palace in Outworld. We're even."

"That's not how it works."

"Well then do something about it!" he challenges you. When you don't move to attack him, he lets out a chortle. "Thought as much."

"Now, Shang, I'm trying as hard as I can to be civil. We want to use your island as a base. It's halfway between Earth and Outworld, so it's well hidden. Now, we can do this with you, or without you, and I'm starting to prefer the latter. Can you convince me the former is better?"

He grumbles. "Not much I can do about that. If you're going to kill me, then kill me. Otherwise all I ask is that you just leave me alone."

You look back at Mileena, who is still staring up at the tank. Turning back to him, you say, "Alright, but no magical clones or sorcerous tomfoolery."

"Tomfoolery?! Why, I should--!" He shakes his hands at you, his old knuckles turning white. "I am still a powerful sorcerer, I'll have you know! I make the demands here! And I'll accept having your team on my island only if you repair my palace here so I may live in comfort once more!"

"Only if you don't interfere with the team and our missions."

"Only if your 'team' stays on your half of the island!"

"We want two-thirds."

"You'll get three fifths at the most, and like it!"

"Deal, but only if you agree to not meddle in our affairs and use your magic unless you help train our team against sorcerers."

"I'll not help train your kids! Not unless another wing is added onto my palace, along with servants, food and clean water!"

You bring up your hand and shake his. "Alright. But we're getting this in writing. I know a guy who is good with blood magik."

"Pah, blood magik, a child's toy," Shang mutters as he wipes his hand on his robe. "So long as you fix up my island, I won't bother you. I've learned what happens when I do, thank you very much." He then walks through the exit while grumbling.

"Should've figured he'd be annoying as an old man too," you say. You look at the crew and point in the direction he went. "Follow him, make sure he isn't getting into trouble."

They nod and leave. You approach Mileena again and look as she stands in front of the tank with her eyes closed.

The Mileena in the tank then opens her eyes and looks at you. It is slightly unnerving, how she looks exactly like Mileena used to, with the monstrous tarkatan mouth.

The one outside the tank then opens her eyes. "I can control her," she says. "I can feel everything she feels..."

"What is it like?"

"I... I cannot describe it in words I know," she says. "Imagine doing two things at once, multi-tasking, but on a completely different scale... Two bodies, two brains, two sets of eyes but one mind..."

"What do you think we should do with it? I mean, her. Or... you?" You scratch the back of your head, wondering how best to convey what you mean.

"I don't know," she says, looking at herself as she makes herself look back. "Imagine it, Kaito... Two of me. Fighting together, controlled by one single mind. I can already hardly tell which body was my original form, the one in the tank feels as though I have lived in it for just as long... Because it is my body, too."

She places her hand on the glass, then herself in the jar does the same.

'Two Mileenas...' you think to yourself. 'They'd be powerful allies on the battlefield... and elsewhere.'

Suddenly, an unescapable image flies through your male mind; you, in bed, in the middle of a veritable Mileena sandwich. Both of them working together to work on you...

'By the Elder Gods...'

You shake your head in a weak attempt to rid yourself of the tempting image.

You cough into your hand as you attempt to carry on normally. "Well, I'll uh, I'll leave it up to you," you say. "I mean, it's your body. Or bodies..."

You slowly step back, almost tripping over a dead Mileena. You try not to look at the corpse as you make your way to the exit.

'I have had a WEIRD fucking day today,' you think. 'I murdered---is murdered the right word? Killed several clones of my girlfriend and am now leasing property from the guy who killed my father. When I stop and think about this, this is really messed up.' Once outside the room, you pause and sigh. 'So, nothing out of the ordinary, I suppose.'

As you walk up the stairs and back out into the throne room, you see Shang sitting on his old throne with your crew lingering nearby. The old sorcerer is hurling insults at them. "I can't believe this is part of the crew on my boat."

"It's not your boat anymore," you say, getting his attention. "The edenian royal family completely fixed it up and gave it to me, so it's mine."

He waves his fingers. "I don't need it anyway. I could make a much better boat if I felt like it. I could make a fleet! I have the magic."

"Right, right," you say. "Well, whenever Mileena comes back up, we can move on. I'll contact Johnny Cage and---"

"Oh, don't tell me that buffoon will be involved," Shang says, facepalming at the mention of the actor.

"---and we'll start moving things out to the island," you finish.

You wait for several minutes. Just when you're about to go check on her, you hear footsteps coming up the stairs. The crew look on with you as Mileena exits... followed by herself.

Two Mileenas now walk into the throne room. One wears the garb she once wore during the days of the Mortal Kombat tournament and the other wears her current outfit. You approach them and look them over; though they are alike, there are some differences that can be seen when they are side-by-side like this. One of them has been alive for twenty years, so of course there are. Captain Mileena's body is a bit more sun-kissed compared to the paler, tank-fresh-flesh of the clone. Her body carries only a few scars from past battles, and the clone has none. And of course, Mileena's first body looks somewhat healthier and more well-fed, as opposed to the thinner clone who has only been sustained on nutrient-enriched biogel.

You speak. "Mileena?"

"I am here," she replies in both voices.

"Are you always going to do that?"

"No," she says, speaking from her prime body with a little laugh. "But I could."

"That's fine, thanks," you say, looking the clone up and down. "So... How do I refer to you? You're not exactly multiple people, but there are two of you."

"I am Mileena, the same as before," she says nonchalantly. "Only now, I am two. One mind, two bodies."

"You certainly came around to this idea quickly," you say, trying to keep calm from this latest development. You then notice that Shang is sitting on his throne with a strange smile on his lips. "What's so funny, Shang?"

"Well, we will soon enough," you tell him, turning back to both Mileenas. "What about you? Are you sure this is a good idea?"

Mileena leans into your ear and whispers, "Think about it, Kaito... It's a blank body. I may control it now, but what if we were to offer it to someone else?"

You blink a few times as you begin to realize what she means.

"You don't mean..."

"Yes," she whispers. "Perhaps this could be an alternative. She could free the body she has control over now and return the little girl's soul."

"But she would be... Well, you."

"Not entirely me," she says.

"What are you two talking about?" Shang demands, leaning closer from his chair.

"Nothing," you are quick to dismiss him. "Nothing at all. We should... We should get the longboat ready. Tsuga, Buturo, Chomba, Kojiro, you guys get ready to return to the ship."

"What about Ricky?" Kojiro asks.

"Huh? Oh, right, yeah, him too. We won't be far behind."

The four of them (no, wait, five) leave as you and Mileena stay to speak with Shang Tsung.

"Now, tell me about this team," he says, sitting back. "I didn't know Onaga had returned."

"He did, but not anymore. A thief from Outworld who had the soul of Shao Kahn defeated him."

The old man cracks a brow. "A thief... You don't say. The soul of Shao Kahn? And how is my old employer?"

"Dead, for good," Mileena says. "His very soul was destroyed."

"Ah, how fortunate," Shang says. "This little thief... His name?"

You speak up. "Cao. He's been adopted by Kotal Kahn and is now heir to Outworld's throne."

"Quite a story indeed. He is on your team?"

"That's right."

"I can't wait to meet him," Shang chuckles to himself, laughing at a joke only he can know. "And the others?"

"The new generation. Johnny's daughter, Sub-Zero's son, that kind of thing."

"Goodness, so many children are going to be scampering around my island. I'm glad I never had any." He then looks over at the two Mileenas. "Well... in the conventional sense."

"Are there any dangers we should know about before we assemble the team?" you ask.

"No, no... Well, there may be some wild animals here and there. A few experiments in my free time. I had many traps on this island during the time of tournament, and I'm fairly certain there are still a colony of oni living in the dungeons near Goro's lair..."

"You have a bunch of oni in your basement and you never cleaned them out?"

He shrugs. "I'm old."

"Anything else?" Mileena asks.

"Oh, yes, that's right---the bridge over the pit is broken."

You nod. "Alright, well, we'll see about getting that fixed but I think we're going to have to remove the whole "spiked pit" thing. That's too dangerous."

"That's classic and I'll not have you touch it!"

"If we build a new bridge, it's going to have safety rails," you tell him.

"Fine, fine..." he grumbles.

You say to Shang, "Just wait until we return and don't do anything evil until we get back."

"I'll read. That's not too evil for you, is it?"

"Depends on the magazine," you say, walking out with the two Mileenas by your sides.

As you make your way through the courtyard and down the trail towards the longboat, you look at them both. "I'm sorry, but this is just surreal, even by our normal standards."

"Would it help if I had the new body wear different clothing? Or dye her hair?"

"I don't know. I honestly have no idea what to make of it all."

You stop and look at the new body, holding onto her shoulder to make her stop walking. Mileena watches from both eyes as you look her up and down. "I mean, she's still basically you in a lot of ways, but still, it's all so strange."

"I could make it even stranger," she says, reaching up and taking off her mask. "Kaiiitoooo... give me a kissss!"

When you react in surprise, she giggles. "Remember when I was in the cell, and I tried to make you kiss me, but then Khameleon stole it instead?"

"I remember just fine," you say. "I remember kissing you in Shao Kahn's throne room, too."

She looks away. "You kissed me once on that day, and then you were gone for twenty years..."

"You weren't the only one who missed me," you say, stepping close and cupping her chin. You look at her sharp, needle-like teeth. "Do you truly think Turana would accept this body?"

"I cannot say for certain. She does have a certain envy for me... for good reason. The real question is if she would trade her current body for this one."

"But I never hated her sphinx form," you say. "I wouldn't need her to take your body to feel for her more strongly just because it's her in your skin."

"I know, Kaito, I know..." she says with a sigh. "But perhaps it is an option. Who knows? What if she says yes?"

"I just don't know if it's right," you say. The older Mileena comes up behind you and rubs your shoulders while the new body gives you a hug.

"We could make it right. All that really matters is what we think, and how we feel. And I love you, and want you to be happy, because you make me happy in turn."

You hug the new body, knowing that Mileena feels it just the same as if you were hugging her old one, and gently stroke your fingers through her hair. "I love you too," you tell her. "But I'm going to need to get used to this. And how are we going to explain it to everyone else?"

"We could keep it a secret," she offers. "If you think it strange... we could always have one of me with you and the team, and another elsewhere... Perhaps even with my family? That's an idea."

"Do you think you could control both bodies across the realms?"

"We could try," she says. "What do you think?"

All you know is that it won't be at Johnny's house again after what happened last time.

>...

Sorry for the slow pace at the end here, but one of the benefits of /qst/ is that the thread will be up for quite a while, so we can continue tomorrow after I get back from work.

On another note, I think this might be my last thread on /qst/ unless we have another following another character. I've told the stories I've wanted to tell before the New Defenders arc and I think we can head on back to /tg/ for it. While I like /qst/ for how long the threads stay alive, it's often not as fast as /tg/ and things can come to a slow crawl at points. I don't often write before a quest, but I think for the New Defenders arc I will; you know, having material prepared beforehand and such. It would help speed things up a bit to have blocks of text ready but still write around them for player choice and dialogue and such.

We can use the rest of this thread for any additional details or character moments before we start the next arc, and you can use it to ask me questions or throw suggestions up. But I feel the stones are set in place, as it were, for us to begin the next arc proper in one to two weeks' time.

So, thoughts? /qst/ or /tg/? What moments would you like to see written in this thread, or who would you like to catch a glimpse of before we move onto the next arc? What would you like to see written or more clearly established before we move on?

Ever since being resurrected by Onaga but then losing the battle and escaping, he's been building the "Legion of Doom" to the New Defenders' "Justice League" with Goro, Chameleon, Baraka and others.

Expect Team Bad Guy (working name) to appear every now and then in the next arc.

Something something Dead Alliance but with a bunch of dudes or something

Well, I liked this story arc, Hive Mileena is kind of scarerousing.

At anyrate I'll follow you where ever you write, so it doesn't bother me much. Also pre-writing is fine.

The frost giant being introduced to the Lin Kuai would be good.

What's Cyrax been up too? Maybe he has gone full zenyatta at this point

Maybe Noob's army getting wrecked as Quan Chi has returned to the netherealm

Johnny making the dragon wing movie

Yeah the frost giant girl would be a fun thread.

Playing as her or seeing how she reacts to finally having people around again.

Damashi if there isn't an "episode" that has the New Defenders help with Johnny's movie then I will be very disappointed.

Sure, we can have a scene with her.

He'll come around again, don't worry. The shaolin are just using him as a heater for the winter.

What would you like to see specifically from our girl?

I like the feeling of being completely out of one's depth that you get from her. Perhaps dealing with the novel "death by powerpoint" when she gets tapped by SF?
>>
>>411883
Maybe a training montage or at least her trying to improve herself to try and measure up to her seemingly superior teammates? I just what to see her use Stryker's ridiculous super-taser from MK9
>>
>>411883
She could be the white guy in a school of minorites kind of character. She can't relate to anyone except maybe Kaito since he had the most normal life out of everyone before the MK tournament.
Well him and Kenshi but who the fuck knows where he is.

This is going to be a key focus in the first episode of New Defenders, which will follow her as a protagonist for the first mission.

I actually had similar thoughts; something like a training montage now that she's super-motivated to be a member of the team and wants to impress someone in particular

No, she's crushing very hard on Tundra, must to Frost's chagrine.

I've been working very hard on some other pastebins for an unrelated story and the Cao bin fell by the wayside. Check back in the thread; I'll try to push it out before this one ends. Expect it sometime this week.

Don't know why but that reminded me of the whole Otiak thing with Anons debating about a DC cameo like the Alien and Predator.

>Would you have actually done that if we made a specific choice of was it just an unused idea.

Early on in the quest, I decided that guest characters wouldn't be canon. Looking back on it, I probably could have had more fun with them in the Otiak saga, with Freddy and Jason and such, but maybe I'll add them in the novelization whenever I get to updating that as well. I think I could've added a few more interesting encounters to the Otiak saga, since it blew by due to the fast pace of the story, but it's alright.
>>
>>412062

I don't think I answered the question the way you wanted. I had Ryan make an offhand reference to MKVSDC in the third arc; that's about as close to the DC I'll ever get.

No, no, that would be just silly. She is perfectly, completely, 100% average in every single respect when it comes to her abilities. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing special about Samantha Stryker, at all, period. For real.

Jessie's ears perk up at the sound of the door to the apartment opening and closing. Turning away from her computer, she looks on as Sam enters, wearing a jogging outfit and covered in sweat with an empty water bottle in her hands.

"Wow, girl, look at you," she says to her roommate as the young policewoman heads to the fridge without saying hello. She cocks a brow. "What, am I not here or something?"

Sam takes out another bottle of water from inside and downs a big gulp. "Sorry, sorry, I was just out of breath. I ran for, like, three miles!"

"What for?" she asks, mildly curious. "You got a marathon or something coming up?"

"No, nothing like that!" she says, bouncing across the kitchen to open the small window and let in some fresh air. Jessie leans back in her chair a bit to get a better look at her friend; she's unnaturally energetic today. Usually she's a mess after work. Come to think of it, ever since she came back from her four-day vacation that she won't talk about, she's been oddly... giddy. Now she's just staring out the window.

"Sammie?" she gets her attention. "What's gotten into you lately?"

"Oh, uh... How do I describe it, it's like a... job promotion." She says, seemingly satisfied with her response.

Jessie doesn't buy it. "Really? What department? You're not going to have to move, are you?"

"It's hard to describe, but... I might," she admits.

Jessie gets out of her chair and walks into the kitchen. "What? You're really moving out?"

"Well, I mean, nothing is certain or anything, but I have a chance to be part of a, well, it's a kind of a team," she explains while remaining vague.

"And...?"

"And, well, I really want to get in shape. I've been running and lifting heavier weights and going to the gym and stuff, I'm super-motivated, hah."

Jessie folds her arms and gives her friend a quizzical look. She sees right through her roommie’s disarming smile. “You met a boy, didn’t you?”

Sam’s smile vanishes and she seems a bit flustered all of a sudden. “What? N-no…”

Now it’s Jessie’s turn to smile, and she does so like a little kid who just found the cookie jar. “Ah-hah! I knew it! That’s why you’re suddenly so workout-crazy and haven’t touched any of the yogurt in the fridge!”

“S-shut up, those are fatty,” Sam says, holding her arm. “No, I really got offered a position on a new team and---“

“And he’s on it, right? Oh! Oh! Or is he a new transfer to your department? Come on, tell me everything!” She moves behind the table and sits at it, putting her chin in her palms and her elbows on the surface.

Sam looks away to hide her reddening face. “Come on Jess…” She relents after a moment. “Well… He’s tall, and he’s got, like, muscles.”

“What are we talking about? Like, ‘hits the gym every now and then’ or ‘lives to lift’ kinda?”

“I mean he’s not a meathead but, yeah, he’s really jacked,” Sam admits, covering her mouth and smile a little.
>>
>>413790

“Look at you, going after the lean meat,” Jessie teases. “What’s his name?”

“Zian.”

She blinks a few times. “Zian… Is that French?”

“Chinese, I think.”

“He’s Asian?”

“A mix, maybe? He looked… I can’t really say. But he’s from south.”

“How far south?”

“Uh… Pretty far. But he has this big scar on his face, going down from his forehead to his cheek, and I don’t think he can see out of right eye.”

“Ouch. How’d that happen? An accident?”

“He said his uncle did it to him.”

“Oh… Is he, you know, sensitive?”

“No! Well, he’s nice, but he’s strong. I can’t describe him! He’s just tall and handsome and AH!” Sam clasps her hands over her face and shakes her head. Jessie watches with a smile as Sam calms down. “And yeah, he’s on the team, and I really really really wanna stay on the team, and being physical is important.”

“Is it, like, SWAT? Special Forces?”

“…Kinda.”

Jessie’s smile begins to fade. “You’re not going into the military, are you? Like active service? It’s not dangerous, is it?”

“Uh… It could be pretty dangerous, yeah. I know I didn’t tell you about that little vacation I took but it was kind of like, a, um…” Her voice trails off. She’s clearly withholding something. “It was like a, a thing that brought people who had potential to be on the team together and we did some… stuff.”

“Stuff?”

“Yeah, uh… Some physical stuff, like fighting and, uh… It doesn’t matter. I think I have a shot to get in.”

Jessie is quiet for a moment. Sam isn’t exactly a physical powerhouse and her story doesn’t quite line up. But she’s been with her friend since college and she knows a thing or two about how she’s come so far in her current line of work, and who is responsible.

“Is this because of your father?”

“No!” Sam is quick to say, making Jess hold up her hands. Sam sighs and composes herself. “I mean… Yes, it’s because of who my dad is, but he doesn’t have anything to do with it. In fact… I called him and told him about it, and he doesn’t want me to do it.”

“What? Why not?”

Sam crosses her arms. “Well, like you said: it could be dangerous. And dad never liked the idea of me being in danger, so he blew up hardcore and I told him I wouldn’t do it.”

“…But you are?”

“I really want to,” she says, looking up at the ceiling. “Like, I feel almost like I’ve been waiting my entire life for something like this, it could be the most amazing thing in the world if it happens. This team, it could mean big things for me. Bigger than anything I’ve ever done before!”

“And you’re sure it’s not just because of the Zian guy?”

“Yes!” she insists. “He’s just… Like, a cold cherry on top.”

Jess pauses in thought. “…Did you say, a ‘cold’ cherry?”
>>
>>413793

Sam bites her lip, almost like she is chastising herself for poor word choice. “Yeah, you know, everyone says that.”

“Literally no one does.”

“Well I meant cherry. Cherry on top, you know, like ice cream, and how ice cream is cold. I didn’t mean he’s cold or anything, just that, you know, cherries on ice cream would be cold, because ice cream is cold and… yeah, I thought, ‘Hey, a cold cherry!’ Haha… ‘cause of the the, you know…”

Jess watches her friend go to great lengths to justify her word choice with an amused grin on her face. “Riiiight… Well, good luck on the whole team thing. If you have to move, let me know so we can set up the dates on the moving truck and junk. You’d better keep in touch!” she says as she stands up.

“I will,” Sam says. “I mean, if I have to move.” She looks down and remembers how sweaty she is. “Gah, I need a shower in the worst way.”

As she walks into the bathroom, Jess pokes her head in before she can close the door. “Oh, by the way… I found your pillow in the freezer.”

Sam is completely still. “Oh… Right. I wanted it to be, ah, cold. You know. So my head could be… cooled.”

“…Right.”

She steps back to let Sam close the door and returns to her computer. ‘Something’s definitely gotten into that girl. She didn’t even tell me what the whole ‘team’ thing is. Ah, it’s probably just the guy.’

As she resumes typing away at her keyboard, working on a paper for school, Sam meanwhile has shed the remainder of her clothing and stepped into the shower. She turns the water on, pausing for a moment before keeping it on the ‘cold’ setting. She shivers as the terribly cold water pulses from the head before turning it to a luke-warm setting.

‘I need to get better at handling the cold,’ she thinks, turning it slightly back into the cold range and letting her body adjust. She closes her eyes and imagines that the cold isn’t coming from the water, but proximity to a certain someone, and soon her shivers aren’t from discomfort by the cold but titillating thoughts in her head. ‘Oh, Zian… I wonder if you’re thinking about me right now…'

>Meanwhile, thousands of miles away…

Zian walks up to his father’s meditation chamber and knocks. Upon given permission to enter, he does so.

The grandmaster opens his blue eyes to behold his son. “Zian. How goes your task?”

“Good, good. We managed to build a bed big enough for Bestla. She likes her room, and we’ve got all of her stuff and trophies settled in. We’re working on the windows for her room, but, uh… There’s a problem.”

“Is it the language barrier still?”

“No, no, nothing like that. We don’t, uh…” He scratches the back of his head, unsure of how to properly approach the issue at hand. “I mean, most of the doors in the temple are big enough for her, but we don’t really have any way to get her into the… you know, the bathroom.”

Sub-Zero stares at his son blankly.

“I mean, she could go outside, but it’s a bit uncivilized, you know? And showering, I mean we have a few frozen lakes nearby but that’s a tedious problem in itself. If she crawled into the shower rooms she wouldn’t be able to stand, and even then all the showers are in stalls so she can’t really, you know, fit.”

The grandmaster lets out a sigh and reaches for his nearby cell phone. “I’ll call the contractor.”

As he dials the number, he thinks to himself, ‘I send him to find dragons and he returns with eggs and a giant…’

It's in the Cao bin I haven't finished dealing with Cao's post-Thief Quest life as he has difficulty adjusting to his new title and lifestyle. One of the things is that Ferra, whereas before she never treated him with any attention as he was just a street rat, is now paying extra special attention to the new prince, much to Torr's irritation, as he sees Cao as trying to steal his rider.

Cao Kahnzadeh. There are days when he awakens and the title still seems foreign to him. He would rise from his lavish bed, walk across unfamiliar stones and stare into a mirror and he is not so sure who stares back; the thief he was or the kahnzedah he now is. Sometimes he thinks the person in the mirror is the thief, but when he would place his hand upon the reflective surface, he cannot touch him. Now he is the kahnzedah, son of Kotal Kahn, and while he still has all of the skills that he had when he lived life not in the imperial palace-temple he has never felt quite the same since that fateful day one month prior when he clasped palms with the Emperor, allowing their blood to mingle and becoming bonded to him by blood magik.

Much was the same on this day. He withdraws his hand from the mirror, staring down at the scar. It has healed well, showing only a red mark from where he had used the knife. He closes his hand tightly, feeling a sting from the wound. He draws in a sharp breath through his nostrils before letting it out as a sigh.

Adjusting to this new life has been difficult for him and continues to be so. The clothes, the food, the bed, even this mirror all feel wrong to him. He had never before felt any attachment to material things like this, only caring about what he and his sisters needed, but now he had them in abundance and knew not what to do. He was a prince now, and his sisters were princesses; others would provide everything they had to work to get for themselves before. What does that leave him with?

He returns to his bedchamber after washing his face with a rag. He looks at the bed, thinking about how the disheveled sheets will be made straight again before he returns tonight. He never even sees the servants, usually, and often wonders how they slip in and out unnoticed. And he thought he was stealthy! But he also knows that Ruby, during her time as Executive Secretary before moving up to First Minister, handled many of the lesser details of the palace, including the management of its staff, servants, cooks and more. She likely employed, and continues to employ, hinparian handmaidens. That would explain how they seem like shadows.

He sits back down on the bed and contemplates a number of things. He remembers this very bed being host to an 'afterparty' of sorts after the day of celebration and feasting that followed the defeat of Onaga and his own defeat of Shao Kahn. It had involved himself, Cassie and Jacqui in their second escapade under the sheets. Both of them had been quite upset at Cao for not revealing his secret to them earlier, especially before their first 'party' in the barracks, but after he had explained to them much of the fears and worry he had during his time carrying Shao Kahn's soul, they understood somewhat. After all, they hadn't been in much of a position to do anything to help him at the time.
>>
>>413909

And now he was a prince, a most enviable and desirable position in Outworld, earned through his sweat, pain and blood. By helping Kotal Kahn overcome Onaga, and personally overcoming the influence of Shao Kahn, none could question that Cao's new title was not deserved, though Cassie had been the only to playfully imply that it was Shao Kahn's influence over him that was responsible for his performance on that first night, something he was all too eager to prove wrong, which he believes he did. They certainly seemed pleased, to say the least. Sadly, they had to part with their allies and return to Earthrealm, but now Cao was a member of the New Defenders. He would see them again soon, he was assured of that.

After their little party, as they laid upon the bed while covered in sweat, they talked about what Cao's life would be like now, though it was far too early to know many specifics. In particular, they wondered a great deal about what role they would play in his life and if they could afford to continue these passionate encounters. Cao, of course, wanted to but both girls were bound by duty to serve Earthrealm's interests and help defend it. Jacqui was the one who jokingly referred to how much she would enjoy being called a princess, to which Cassie had replied that she preferred the term 'warrior princess.' But all three of them were in no rush to even seriously consider the idea of marriage, though Cao knew that, as heir to the throne, in time it would be a very important thing to take very seriously. There was also the matter of them being teammates now; while the New Defenders was not, strictly speaking, a military organization, they both (particularly Jacqui) were concerned about fraternization, which they had to explain to Cao, who didn't (and still doesn't fully) understand what that meant.

The girls had always been wonderful friends with each other, but now it had been taken to a new level. The best thing they could describe it as, both with each other and with Cao, was 'friends with benefits.' As he understood it, with their society being as different from his as it was, they knew that they had to maintain a professional appearance and attitude within their organization but also acknowledged their own feelings for each other and for him in private. All three of them, as teammates on the New Defenders, would have to watch out for each other and rely on each other, but they weren't the only people on the team. Favoritism was a concern of Jacqui's; that sleeping with each other would lead to preferential treatment. Cassie explained that, in a leadership position like she was, it can be damaging to the team as a whole if she went easy on the people she slept with. It could lead to anger, resentment or jealousy from others on the team and trouble from superiors.
>>
>>413913

He understood that, at least. He was young and so were they, so this was all mostly fun anyway. He rather liked the benefits that came from having friends with benefits and certainly didn't want to ruin it, and he liked both of them. Perhaps not romantically, but he cared about them deeply as friends and valued having them as allies, which he didn't want to spoil. And he knew that they felt much the same about him. After all, if they hadn't they wouldn't have spent a few more hours playing around after they were fully recovered and ready to go again.

But now he was back in the present, blinking a few times as memories of that evening slip back into his mind and he stands back up. He walks to a room that connects to his, with a padded floor, and begins to stretch. Now that he lived in the palace and not in the streets, it was up to him to keep in shape. He had a morning routine of various exercises he used to do in his spare time and he does them now. His trip to Earthrealm had also shown him the value of personal fitness; the gym he had gone to was like a temple of athleticism, with each station and machine being like a different way to worship one's body. While he didn't have the equipment nor facility to make a gym, he did have himself.

He spends an hour working himself into a sweat, his muscles aching and burning in a good way. He heads for the bath and settles into it, cleaning himself off. When this is done, he walks back into his room, only to discover that his sheets are already straight and clean with his morning outfit already laid out for him upon them.

'How the hell do they keep doing that?' he wonders, amazed.

He changes into his clothing. It is a green outfit with small hints of gold, along with a few gems woven into the fabric. It is meant to mimic the green skin and tribal nature of the osh-tekk race. He can appreciate that aspect of it, though still doesn't feel very comfortable wearing the clothing. The shoes, an elegant pair of slippers, are at least comfortable.

He leaves his chambers and towards his older sister's. Sanra and Hua have their own rooms in what is probably the biggest difference from their previous life, where they all shared a single room smaller than any single one of their current quarters. And it was underground, and smelt bad, and... Well, there were some things that were good about this new life. He knocks on her door and hears her call for him to enter. Pushing it open, he's treated to a sight of Sanra sitting and having her hair done by a dark-skinned handmaiden with golden-colored irises. Cao walks in as his sister smiles at him and offers him a seat.

"Good morning," she says to him. He nods as he sits down and looks at her getting her hair done. "Do you like it?" she asks, tilting her head forward to show him the finer details of her new hairstyle.

He shrugs. "I liked your old hair better."
>>
>>413917

She isn't offended. She knows Cao better than most, enough to know that even if he thinks her hair is nice, it's just another change brought about by their new life, and change has never sat well with him. "I think it's very nice," she says, holding up a small mirror.

"Is Hua up?" he wonders more than asks.

"She's always up early. Ruby's giving her lessons today."

Ruby is smart and opportunistic; a dangerous combination. She quickly stepped in to provide the means to kill D'Vorah when she saw the chance to become First Minister, a position she won undoubtedly through influence with the Kahn. She quickly became very involved with the three of them, helping Hua both with the surgery to remove the larvae that the kytinn had implanted in her and, now, in educating her in a variety of schools of knowledge.

"I don't like it," he mutters.

"Ruby is a good woman," she insists. "You just have trust issues."

'And you like the company of women too much,' he thinks about his sister, his eyes straying to the lovely young handmaiden. 'Then again... so do I, so I can't talk.'

"Nothing wrong with not trusting someone who would turn on us if it meant favor with the Kahn," he says to her.

Sanra gives him a look, but doesn't counter his point. They've never had trouble being honest with each other but this is simply a point they'll have to disagree on. He knows she's rather fond of Ruby herself, or perhaps Ruby's beauty, but the same could be said of how she feels about Skarlet.

His thoughts drift then to the blood construct and he wonders where she is on this day. While never making any formal pledges to the throne, as she is free for the first time in her life, she also hasn't gone much farther than the palace walls. Kotal Kahn tolerates her, but is wary of one who was born of blood magik, as he knows all too well the potential danger of such a potent assassin given free roam about his palace. But Cao believes she means no harm any longer and Kotal trusts his new son.

Deciding to look for her and see how she is doing, he rises and heads for the door. Sanra speaks to him from behind. "Don't interrupt Hua's lessons," she advises.

"Wasn't planning to," he replies, leaving the room and closing the door behind him.

He strolls down the halls, occasionally passing guards and other palace attendants who stop and acknowledge him. That's another thing that's made him uneasy-the attention just walking around tends to bring. It's unnatural for a thief to be greeted so readily and openly by everyone he walks past, hoping to earn his favor. "My prince," and "Kahnzedah!" and more. He never knew that having titles would make his skin crawl as it does. He misses when he moved about unseen and uncared for by those around him---he doesn't know how Sanra has adjusted so neatly.

He walks past a small room in the temple and the scent of incense reaches his nostrils. Poking his head inside, he discovers a pleasant sight: that of a demon. But not just any demon, as usually a demon would signify quite a bit of trouble, for Ashrah sits in calm meditation at the heart of the room, her wide hat placed at her side and the curved Kriss blade, Datusha, sitting upon her crossed legs. Burning sticks of incense are placed on either side of her. As usual, her hair is done in a tight bun behind her head and her elegant white robes closely hug her body. He walks into the room, silently so as not to disturb her, and leans against the entryway arch.

"You seem uneasy," she whispers, speaking to him without opening her eyes.

Scratching the back of his head, he approaches her and sits down. "I am," he admits. "I don't belong here."

"You belong out on the streets. Why, then, did you take Kotal Kahn's offer?"

"I wanted a better life for my sisters."

"There are many ways to have done so, you know this. Why did you truly clasp his hand and allow your blood to bond with his?"

"It felt right," he whispers, his eyes straying off to one side. "Everyone was there, and cheering, and all those eyes upon us..."

"Did it truly feel right, though? Would you make the same choice again?"

"I don't know."

Ashrah opens her eyes and gives him a smile. "For what it is worth, I believe you made a good choice. Life is full of difficult choices, and the struggle to better ourselves will always be mired with doubt."

"Was it a good choice?" he asks, looking back into her eyes. "Do I really deserve all of this?"

"You endured much. You harbored a soul of great darkness within you and it threatened to overtake you, to destroy you. This would have brought untold suffering to others and devastation to your family. Look at your family now, and you. They are more than safe; they are royalty."

He cocks a smile. "I suppose so. Still, I never imagined it would be like this."

"Sometimes things do not always turn out the way we think, or hope," she says, clutching a hand to her heart. "I hope that one day my quest will be complete, that I will find peace and rid myself of this accursed demonic nature that threatens to overtake me, just as Shao Kahn once threatened you. In this, you and I are alike. As someone who still hopes to attain what you have done and defeat the darkness within, I bed you to not doubt yourself so much."

"Well, I don't have your strength," he smiles.

"No, you don't. You are stronger than I."

"Ashrah, come on, I-"

"I am not exaggerating. I struggle with my own impulses, and you defeated the very soul of Shao Kahn."

"But I don't know how," he insists. "I shouldn't have been able to. It was me, and him, and he was stronger. Everyone knows that."

"He wasn't. You won."

"But it's not that simple. I..." His voice trails off as he tries to explain it. "In my head, my mind, wherever I fought him, there were others. People who helped me."
>>
>>413928

"Shao Kahn was alone."

"Yes! But it was still just me and him. I felt something unlike anything else at that moment and it allowed me to overpower him."

"It doesn't change the fact that you were stronger. Others may have helped, but in the end, you were the only one who could destroy him. I could only offer you a way to lock him away, and others could only offer alternatives. But you found an answer within yourself greater than anything anyone else could have offered you. You found strength."

"I stole it," he whispers. "After all, I am a thief."

"Stolen strength is still strength," she says with a shrug. "You stole his powers, you stole his artifacts, you even stole the service of his last loyal subject."

Cao chuckles a few times and Ashrah does as well. She brings a hand to her mouth and wipes away a smile as she adds, "I wish I had the strength you possess, Cao. Perhaps then I would already be finished with my quest."

He's silent at first, thinking about her and her journey of purity. "Those souls that I gave you..."

"The only truly dark soul among them was that of the foul oni, Moloch. There was darkness in some of the others; greed, treachery, murderous intent. I thank you for them. Cleansing them has allowed me to further my quest towards purity."

"But how many more will you need?"

"I know not. During our battle, when I clashed blades against Quan Chi, I had hoped to kill him-a demon sorcerer of such power would surely be enough, or at least nearly enough, to rid me of my own demonhood. And then there is the one who calls himself the Wraith King, Noob Saibot. It is for these reasons that I believe I must return to the Netherrealm."

"What? No, don't," he says, straightening upon hearing her news. She has been here as a guest since the temple was saved, helping to repair it and offering spiritual guidance to those who have sought it. "You've done well here, why leave?"

"I cannot obtain purity in this place," she sighs. "There is so little here that is black and white. Outworld paints almost entirely in shades of grey. What am I to purify myself? Cleansing thieves? Chasing wild animals?" She shakes her head. "No, in order to truly rid myself of that which I hate, I must slay true evil. I must attack the darkness where it lives and breeds."

Cao looks into her eyes and knows she is resolute; she often is about everything she does. "I went down into that hell to save you once," he says.

"And I will forever be grateful," she replies, reaching out to hold his hand. "But until I am truly pure, I will never belong here."

He holds her hand and sighs. "I'm just... You're one of the few things here that I look forward to seeing."

She smiles and caresses his hand. "You mean a great deal to me as well."
>>
>>413936

Meeting her gaze again, he feels a great compulsion to kiss her. But he holds himself back; she is a demon of lust. She told him that she battles her temptation constantly. For one such as her, with such a beautiful form, to keep herself in check must require fortitude he cannot imagine.

"I don't think I'm stronger than you," he says. "If I were in your position, I don't think I could stop myself. I already don't," he adds, a bit ashamed.

She picks up on it. "Don't judge yourself for what you desire. We all make our choices," she says softly. "And sometimes, we deny ourselves the thing we want the most, no matter how terribly we want it, because we know it is for the best."

She moves a bit closer then, pulling him into a hug. He returns it gladly, knowing of what she speaks. As much as he would like to take what they have and make it into something more, her quest is important to him, both as a friend and as someone who felt the Light within her protect him from harm. He owes a great deal to her, and giving in just to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh with her would be a betrayal of her trust. Still, as she pulls away, she places her lips upon his cheek in a chaste but meaningful kiss. "Thank you," she whispers as she sits back.

"When will you leave?"

"Soon. Not tonight, I think. But soon."

"Let me know, will you?" She nods. After a few moments of hesitating, he stands up and leaves her, heading towards the door. He pauses and looks back. "Ashrah... When you're no longer a demon, do you think...?"

She looks up at him and smiles. "Who can say, other than the two of us upon that day? We shall see."

He nods and leaves, wondering about what will happen when she finally does finish her quest. He hopes it will be soon. Just as she said, he cares a great deal for her. She was perhaps the first truly generous soul he ever encountered, not long after his first journey outside of the city. In a way, she helped him realize the value of opening himself up to others, and when she died defending his unconscious body to that hated creature D'Vorah, he remembers still the guilt that wracked him. It was that very same guilt that motivated him to carry her hat and hunt her down in the Netherrealm. He remembers what she was like when he found her again; seductive, sensual, scheming. Attractive, but not the Ashrah he knew.

Cao was proud that he had done right by her, returning the Light that he had carried for so long. He was happy that she had remained after his and Kotal's defeat of Onaga, and now that she was leaving, a weight was placed upon him. It hadn't been an exaggeration when he said that she was one of the few things he looked forward to seeing around this palace, so her departure is unwelcome news, but one he knows he'll have to accept. He can't control her, after all---not that he would want to in the first place.

As he walks and thinks, he finds himself unable to focus. He sighs and walks out into the gardens, thinking that some fresh air would do him some good, and finds Ruby walking with Hua. He spies them first when he overhears the hinparian speaking to her and decides to follow along, noting how well Hua has healed---a combination of Ruby's surgical efforts and Skarlet's magical blood. She practically skips along in her nice new dress, examining the many flowers in Kotal's garden while being lectured on them.

The young girl walks alongside the red-clad dark-skinned woman as she speaks. "Many of these flowers are not native to these lands. Z'unkahrah is quite an arid place, where things struggle to grow and bloom. These gardens are a great feat of planning and proper care. Not enough water, and they will dry. Too much, and they will drown. Many of them have unique requirements to prosper, much like many different people have a great many needs."

"I like these ones," Hua says, touching the petals of a delicate yellow flower.

Ruby kneels alongside her. "Those, once ground and combined with the roots of a rare plant, dried and then soaked in a special oil and dried once more, form a potent poisonous powder that causes the eyes to bleed, rendering temporary blindness."

Hua quickly retracts her hand. "Is it dangerous?"

Ruby smiles. "By itself, no. By itself it is merely a pretty flower."

Ruby uses a pair of golden sheers to cut the flower at the stem and gently place it onto Hua's ear. The girl giggles a bit, adoring the affection.

That's when Cao decides to make his presence known with a clearing of his throat. Hua turns and her brown eyes brighten as she sees him. "Cao!" She runs over and hugs him. "Good morning!"

He tussles her hair a bit, being very careful to not ruin the new style it has been given. He looks over at Ruby, who stands and gives a small bow. In a very formal voice, she greets him with his title, "My Kahnzedah."

"Ruby." He kneels down and gives his younger sister a hug, who enthusiastically takes him over to the flowers.

"Ruby's teaching me all kinds of things about these," she says, pointing out a few of them. She elaborates on some of the interesting qualities that some possess, whether it is for alchemical or botanical purposes, and which ones she likes the most.

As glad as he is for her enthusiasm, he can't help but think that Ruby is making an apprentice out of her. 'Would that really be so bad?' part of him ponders. He knows how intelligent the hinparian is---she's the head of the imperial library, though her new position has forced her to relegate that duty to a small number of trusted tome-priests who manage it while she is here at the palace.

The older woman approaches and says, "Hua, go examine some of the ones I haven't shown you yet. I'd like a moment with your brother."

She nods and moves away. The First Minister turns to face him fully and greets him with a smile. "Sleep well?"
>>
>>413947

"Well enough," he admits, maintaining an air of indifference. Each time Ruby speaks to him, she does something that unnerves him slightly, ever since that conversation that took place right after she learned Kotal wanted him in line for the throne when she not-so-subtly alluded to wanting to marry him so as to become Empress of Outworld.

"If you are having difficulty sleeping, I know a number of things that could offer some relief."

He cocks an eyebrow. "Who says that?"

"I beg your pardon. Sanra mentioned it to me in passing, and you do look a bit haggard under your eyes."

He idly brings up a hand to rub under one of his eyes. "Well... The bed is a bit too comfortable for my liking. I'm used to sleeping on stones."

"Shall I have them bring in a slab of rock for you to bed upon?" she smiles.

"I'd be willing to hear your other suggestions first," he says, though he's already anticipating her inviting herself into his bed for 'relief.'

"I have a number of herbal potions and other tonics that can assist you with sleeping. Are the sheets and pillows not to your liking?"

He rubs his mouth before mumbling, "I'm fine, thank you."

Apparently content with that, she turns to look over at Hua. "Her lessons are going very well. She's an exceptionally bright child."

He nods in agreement. She's always been the smartest of the three, able to read and write while he never bothered to learn either. He watches her now, running her fingers along the flowers and dipping her toes into the small manmade stream that flows alongside the rows, observing her smile. Moments like this alleviate his doubt over his choice to bring himself and his sisters into the palace. She seems very happy here and he'd hate to ruin it by regretting the decision.

Swallowing some of his suspicions, he looks back at the hinparian and says, "Thank you for teaching her."

"Of course. But please, keep me in mind if you have any further issues sleeping, my Kahnzedah." She smiles and bows again before moving off to collect Hua and resume her lessons.

An innocent enough sentence, perhaps, but one Cao can't help but feel is laced with innuendo. While he'd readily take her to bed due to her beauty, her aspiration is what gives him pause. His caution is perhaps the safer route to take when it comes to someone who has openly declared her desire for a throne of her own. His bed might very well provide the means to gain one, so perhaps he would do well to keep her out of it.
>>
>>413950

He watches her walking with his sister for a moment before heading back into the palace proper. As he passes by several of the guards, he notices the diminutive Ferra and her hulking companion Torr milling about the central hall. He stays out of both of their sights, not wanting to get locked into conversation with the rider again. She is, perhaps, the one person in the temple he tries to avoid at all costs---mostly because she's had a strange fascination with him ever since he became Kahnzedah, which has earned him the ire of her mount. Sneaking along the wall so as to ensure that she doesn't spy the 'skinny prince' as she calls him, he makes it to the stairs and quickly scales them. He rounds a corner and proceeds towards the throne room.

While he favors Cao, he is making efforts to connect with them. Ruby teaching Hua and Sanra's handmaidens are things given at Kotal's leave, of course. But he isn't exactly a parental figure to them in a traditional sense, obviously, but he sometimes has room in his schedule for a sitdown with them.

"So, Hua, have you torn out any hearts today?"

"Um... No..."

"Ah. That's all well enough, then."

I mean Cao isn't actively taking hearts. There will probably be a lot of breaking in the future tho. How is Nitara doing? I kinda feel bad about killing her sister. Then again Cao isn't nearly as nice about bad guys as Kaito is.

Having successfully avoided another confrontation with the brute and his strangely affectionate rider, he runs a hand through his hair and lets out another sigh before walking up the steps to the throne room. He is briefly reminded of a time when he impersonated a guard and passed by the king of the shokan walking down these very steps. Thankfully the four-armed monarch was preoccupied talking to one of his kin, and had not noticed him at the time, but then again that was a very different time, one when the guards hunted him instead of hailing him and saluting.

Cao enters the throne room and looks around, but does not immediately see his adoptive father. Taking a few steps towards the large throne itself, he finds himself walking up to its arm and resting a hand on its stone surface. The throne is quite opulent in its own right, covered in a variety of patterns depicting the sun, large predatory cats, snakes and other symbols that Kotal holds close to himself. As the young prince does this, he spies a figure out on a nearby balcony: Kotal himself. The osh-tekk is looking out over his city with his arms behind his back.

Silently, Cao approaches him from behind, stopping to take position to the emperor’s left. Kotal doesn’t look down, but still speaks. “It is a fine morning.”

Cao nods, but does not reply. His brow furrows slightly as he thinks about what to say. He has always had a bit of difficulty speaking with Kotal about personal matters; like many things, it is part of the transitional process.

Kotal, however, seems to note this. “Speak freely. I welcome it.”

“I am… I am conflicted,” Cao finally manages a reply. “I still do not feel quite like I belong here.”

“This place may never truly be your home,” Kotal notes. He points out to the city. “That, that is your home. You may not have been born on them, but you were raised on those streets. The rooftops, the alleys, the aqueducts. They were your refuge, your sanctum, your freedom. This palace was one of the few places in the city you could not go, and for much of your life it was a place of oppression, one to be feared.” Now he turns his head. “Of course you do not feel at home here: it was never your home.”

“But my sisters seem to like it,” he says, leaning on the stone railing. “Sanra was always hoping to get out of the city. Maybe living here in the temple is kind of like that, because of the things you just said.”

“Perhaps. But she is a bright young woman; I think she is more open to change than you are. And your youngest sibling is still a child, one who will benefit from the stability of growing here in the palace. But as for you, I can take you out of the streets, but I cannot take the streets out of you.”

Cao looks up and meets his gaze. “What do you suggest, then?”

“Do simply as you desire. If you wish to leave the palace and spend time in the streets, you may.”
>>
>>428093

Your eyes drift away and you change the topic slightly, but then connect it to the point at hand. “Hua is being taught by Ruby. If I am going to rule one day, shouldn’t I be taught to? I would have thought you would want to teach me yourself, but so far you haven’t.”

Kotal turns his gaze outwards again. “For the time being, I wish for you to merely adjust. For one such as you, this takes time. There are a great many things I would like to instruct you personally on: diplomacy, history, leadership. Things that benefit leaders and rulers. What I do not need to teach you is how to take care of yourself, and I trust that you will. So until you are ready to be taught, I will not force my teachings upon you. You are yet young, my son. You have growing to do. I thought I was done growing, until I met the man you had become. You have taught me much already, and I feel that I am a stronger leader because of our time together. But I will change more as we age.”

Cao looks up at him as Kotal continues, “The truth is, one never stops growing, and we change throughout the course of our lives. You have shown yourself to be a worthy heir in many ways, but there are things yet to be learned. A leader must know a great many things, he must be able to lead by both example and might. He must inspire courage when needed, and fear when necessary. You may not be a leader yet, but you are an excellent warrior and a survivor. Other qualities will come later.”

“I suppose I’m not ready yet, no,” the thief admits. “The only responsibilities I ever felt like I had were to myself and my sisters, but now they’re taken care of better than I could do alone.”

“Responsibility is a difficult thing. It inherently means you must give something of yourself for the sake of something else for a greater purpose. This rarely comes easily, but we must face responsibility in our lives on a daily basis. I myself must juggle a great many responsibilities: at times I must be a leader, a warrior, a diplomat, a judge and an executioner. In the future, I must be a teacher and a father to not only you, but your sisters. For now, I am content to be a little bit of all of those.”

He brings up his hand and places it gently on Cao’s shoulder, giving him a firm squeeze. “Worry not for when the times of greater responsibility come. I will be there to help guide and teach you so that one day you may face them alone, or pass them on.”

They share a look for a moment before looking out over the city as Kotal lets go and resumes his casual standing position. Cao thinks on his words silently for several minutes before deciding to ask about another delicate issue, one that is plaguing him of late.

“You once told me you could not have children of your own,” he says. “Is this true?”
>>
>>428097

“Yes,” Kotal nods. “We osh-tekk are long-lived, but the mistakes of youth can sometimes last a lifetime. The tolls I have suffered for my use of blood magik are not merely skin-deep; I am fortunate that I have not lost my very soul, as some practitioners of the darker arts do. In all things, moderation is important. Such as it is with magic, and mercy and mercilessness. One must find balance in their roles; if I use too much blood magik, I risk losing more of myself, but it is a valuable tool to use against my enemies. Duality is in all things; if I rule too harshly, the people resent me, but if I rule too lightly, the Empire is weak.”

Cao nods as he heeds the lesson. “And… Let’s say that I find myself attracted to too many women. How do I find balance in that?”

Kotal pauses for a moment, looking down at him before throwing his head back and letting out uproarious laughter. Cao narrows his eyes a bit. “I’m serious!” he insists.

“I do not doubt it,” Kotal says, placing a hand on his chest. “Forgive me. Here I am, prattling about the ways of ruling and blood magik, when you seek only advice on the fairer sex.” He looks down at Cao and smiles. “Do you now see what I mean when I tell you that I still have some things to learn on how to be a father to you?”

“I suppose so,” Cao says with a smirk. He scratches the back of his head, not used to asking for advice on matters such as this. “But, what should I do if I am… caught between affections? Or desires?”

Kotal again touches his shoulder, this time turning him around and walking him back into the throne room. “Women are a great many things, Cao. But trying to balance a relationship with many at once can lead a man to ruin, both emotionally and physically. Balance in love is something found between two souls united in it, when both give and take equally and share themselves wholly with one another. This becomes difficult, however, when one of the two is giving themselves over to another, a third. Or perhaps a fourth. If the others are all trying to have a true connection with the one, how can they, when he is spread so thinly?”

The not-so-subtle male pronoun at the end is something Cao catches onto easily enough. “I can see what you mean. But, I know you’re talking about love, and probably, you know, down the line there would be a wife or something, but what about fun? You know, just… fun.”

Kotal lets out a soft chortle. “Of course, ‘fun’ has its place. A mere night’s pleasure, in the grand scheme of things may not seem much, but can be very rewarding to the individual’s involved. Of course, too much ‘fun’ can have consequences of its own.” Kotal places a hand upon the arm of his throne, much like Cao did earlier. “Do you know what the line of succession is, Cao?”
>>
>>428105

He's been taught that, at the least, as the concept itself is fairly easy to understand. “I’m your heir,” he replies. “One day, I’ll have an heir of my own, and they get the throne."

“Legitimate children and bastards alike, all throughout history in all of the realms, have attempted to claim inheritances from their parents. Plenty of children are born from ‘fun’ if you understand my meaning.” He looks Cao in the eyes, and the thief sheepishly averts his while swallowing a lump in this throat. “I spoke earlier of balance, of moderation. Don’t overindulge yourself in women, my son. You may find yourself in the arms of the wrong woman, or worse.”

“Well then, what should I do?”

Kotal grows a bit reflective. “Treat it as you would a sport. Sports, and competitions alike, have rules meant to dictate both the structure of the sport as well as the safety of its players. Choose well who you play with, and ensure they understand the rules as well. Protect yourself.” He then adds, with a smile, “and in both sports and love, avoid those who cheat and do well not to do it yourself. And if you do, don’t get caught.”

Cao coughs into his hand. “I think I understand the metaphor, thank you.” He turns away before pausing and looking back after a moment. “What if… down the line, say if I were to take woman on as a wife, and I grow tired of her or find myself drawn to someone else?”

Kotal breathes deeply through his nostrils. He places a hand on the young outworlder’s shoulder again and speaks seriously, “Never break your vows, my son. Especially not to a woman. Earthrealmers have a saying, ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’ Learn that well and do well to avoid their wrath. But there are… exceptions to the rule of marriage.”

“Exceptions?”

He nods. “That is why we have harems, son.”

After a shared laugh, Cao leaves the throne room feeling a bit better. But as his mirth fades, he finds himself thinking quite a bit about his own situation. Cassie and Jacqui are fun, yes, but what if one of them wants something more serious in the future? What if he does not want either of them, but someone else? There are a number of women in his life he would not mind getting to know better, but is that a reflection of some inability to be decisive when it comes to love?

And then, of course, there is another issue… Cao has already spread his seed. He remembers well what Khameleon did to him, even if he cannot recall the act itself. Eight eggs were born (or laid, rather) of this encounter; and he only knows this because he stumbled upon her in the Living Forest while she was pregnant with them and giving birth. The saurian spawned quickly once she had what she wanted, and he cannot help but think that the children may grow fast because of it. Are they really his children, so to speak?
>>
>>428110

Well, of course they are. She chose him for a mate, after all, due to his skills in thievery, stealth and kombat. But what else may she desire from him once she finds out that he is now a prince? Will the children attempt to claim the throne? They are technically his firstborn, though he wasn’t exactly for the union at the time. Khameleon is very lovely, that much is true, but he didn’t consent to having children with her. Through use of drug-laced saliva, or some kind of natural sleep-poison secretion, she rendered him unconscious and had her way with him. Could he deny the children if he so chose? Doing so could potentially alienate Khameleon…

‘Perhaps,’ he thinks to himself, ‘I should go and speak with her…’

He then also thinks about the only other person in the palace who knows of these children and his brief union with Khameleon; Skarlet. She witnessed the mating firsthand, along with the eggs being laid, and warned him even as Kotal warns him now about the dangers of having so many potential heirs so quickly. She even offered to ‘take care’ of the eggs, though he had refused. But now he thinks that he should speak to her on this matter as well, and perhaps take her along to see how the saurian is faring.

It does not take long for Cao to track down Skarlet. She has remained at the palace, with him and the new royal family, since the Siege of Z’unkahrah. As a new enforcer for Kotal Kahn, or perhaps more specifically Cao, she has been working to help train the soldiers and scouts for the empire alongside a few other elite warrior-trainers employed by the emperor, such as Hachiman. On this day in particular he finds her in one of the arena-dojos performing a kata, moving and stretching as she goes through the motions of kicking, punching and twisting her body. Though she is capable of so much more fluid movement, quite literally as blood, she exercises her physical body daily. He stands in the doorway, observing her pale form, but not without being noticed.

She stops when she catches sight of him and smiles. “My Kahnzedah.”

“I remember when it was ‘my Kahn.’ You were very fond of saying that.”

“Perhaps one day it will be so again,” she muses. Turning to face him fully now, the red-haired woman gives a small bow as he approaches, though not quite as subservient as those she gave when she thought she had no free will. “Do you have need of me?”

“Need isn’t the right word, I just like to spend time with you,” he replies, earning another smile from her. “Do you have time to talk?”

“For you, always.”

After leaving the room and finding a dark corner in one of the lesser-travelled halls, few words are exchanged. Skarlet moans softly against his lips as they kiss while he holds tightly onto her back, one hand on her hip and the other running along her spine. The blood construct tilts her head and deepens the kiss, relishing the physical contact. Having been deprived of such things for so long, her enjoyment of drink and physical pleasures such as these moments of passionate kissing is much greater than usual. As such, her enthusiasm for the act is something Cao finds very attractive (in addition to other qualities she possesses).

Though things between him and she have not progressed beyond this level, kissing and some light fondling, they both are comfortable with the current level of intimacy they share. Perhaps one day it will end, or go further, but for now they simply enjoy each other. Ever since he helped her realize her feelings and get in touch with her inner self-determination, she has chosen to continue down this path, but he cannot help but wonder what it may mean for their relationship in the future. He certainly likes her, she is beautiful and interesting (especially given her origins), but how does she feel about him spending his time with others?

He decides to break the kiss, pulling away from her. Her cheeks are flushed, the darker tint readily apparent on her pale skin, and she seems a bit confused. “Is something wrong?” she asks. “We usually go for longer than this…”

“I know that when we usually step out for ‘talks’ that we tend to ‘speak’ a bit longer, but I was hoping we could actually talk for a bit.”

She understands. “About what?”

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately. I’m having trouble settling into this palace, my new title still makes my skin crawl a bit. I’m not used to it and the change came very fast, you know.”

“I understand,” she nods. “Is there any way I can help?”

“No, you’re fine, trust me. You’re one of the people that help keep my mind off of things,” he says with a smile, brushing her cheek with his finger. “But I’m thinking about what it’s going to be like when I am ready for all of this. Like who I’m going to spend it with.”

He looks into her blue eyes and she raises her brow a bit. “You are talking of your wife, yes?”

“Well I’m definitely not ready for that, but one day I might be,” he says. “What do you think of that?”

“You don’t mean me, do you?”

“Could you see yourself in that place?”

“By your side?” she says softly. “This… is not quite something I had expected to answer today.”

He nods. “You’re right, it’s just been on my mind, and I had a chat with Kotal Kahn about it and lineage and legacy and---“

She holds up her hand. “Now, wait,” she interrupts him. “Let me answer. I’ve always seen myself as a warrior, even before I could think for myself. It is what I was made for. I can enjoy other things now, and I would certainly wish to remain at your side, but as a wife? That is something I do not believe I can do.”

“Why?”

“There is something that comes with the realm of being a wife that I… cannot perform,” she says, attempting to remain tactful.

When she doesn’t continue, he asks, “…And that would be?”

“She means she cannot bear a child,” a new voice says, causing them both to jump and part. Cao whips around, expecting perhaps Ruby or someone similar, but to his amazement it is nobody who lives at the palace, but someone with whom he has much history with: Nitara, the moroi.

She wears a brown cloak that obscures her form; her wings must be tightly folded against her body. She peers at him from beneath the hood with an amused and slightly smug expression, her eyes jumping from him to Skarlet. Though the cloak obscures her body, he remembers well what she looks like. “N-Nitara!” he says, utterly surprised and unsure of whether to run to her or keep up his guard.

“I don’t mean to intrude,” she says with a sly smile, “but I couldn’t help myself.” She looks Skarlet up and down with predatory eyes that make the red-haired woman uneasy. “So, this is the blood construct… not bad, Kahnzedah.”

Cao remembers telling Nitara of Skarlet, and of her desire to consume her, an act which would empower her with great abilities, according to what she told him. He steps to his right, between the vampire and the woman made out of blood.
>>
>>431771

Nitara lets out a soft chuckle. “Oh, you needn’t worry. I wouldn’t think of crossing you in such a way; after all, are we not allies? And an ally of yours is an ally of mine. Even if she does look delicious…” She opens her mouth and licks her fangs, revealing her true nature to Skarlet.

“What are you doing here?” Cao asks the prudent question.

“Can I not drop by to visit?” she asks, stepping close to place a hand on his shoulder. “I did miss you, after all…”

With that, she leans down to pull him into a kiss, a rather lurid one at that. Cao finds himself taken aback by the familiarity of her lips on his, the passion she pours into it, even though he knows Skarlet is watching. Nitara’s eyes open and look at her, as if trying to make her jealous, and she cannot say she is unaffected by it the act, clenching one of her fists. Had Cao not told her of his past encounters with Nitara, she would break them up right now.

The vampiress ends the kiss and leans back, licking her lips. “Mmmm… It’s almost as if I can taste blood in your mouth,” she says, amused.

Cao recovers his composure and steps back. “Aren’t you supposed to be in your realm?”

“Of course I am,” she replies casually, turning to lean up against the stone wall. “But it is not quite what I had expected, I must admit. I thought to steal myself away for a bit and visit an old friend and congratulate him on his victory over both Onaga and Shao Kahn.”

There is a strange implication at the end there, an odd undertone that he cannot quite read. Does it have to do with him never telling her about Shao Kahn? Or the fact the he chose to remain in Outworld, even with the looming threat of the coming Dragon King, instead of departing with her? Either way, he puts a hand on his hip and moves past the point, saying, “What is wrong with your home?”

She sighs. “My people are not quite what I imagined them to be. Bringing them back after so long has made them… cautious.”

“In what ways?”

She shakes her head. “Another time. I am distracting from your earlier conversation… Blood constructs cannot bear children. It is not a function given to them; after all, would the child be a blood construct as well? One would assume it would have to be, as the mother turns into blood. What would happen to the child in her belly?” She looks over at Skarlet. “Male or female, they cannot reproduce. It is engineered into the magic of their creation. This is to prevent an entire race of superior blood-warriors from rebelling against their masters and taking over the realms.”

As she and Skarlet lock eyes, Cao asks, “Is this true?”

“Yes…” she admits after a moment. “This is what I was going to speak of before she arrived.”
>>
>>431778

Nitara smirks. “Though, if a race of blood-men and blood-women were to arise, the vampires would be a good way to keep their population in check. Of course, that would lead to a rise in the power of the vampires, who would then, logically, assume control of their own.” She shrugs. “It would disturb the natural order of things.”

“What a pity that your kind cannot feast on my kind at your leisure,” Skarlet says somewhat distastefully.

Cao steps in before things get heated. “Alright, I understand the point. I didn’t know that about you, Skarlet, but… I suppose it makes sense. But why didn’t you tell me about this before?”

“I did not think on it,” she replies. “You have never approached me about such matters.”

“Fair enough,” he says.

Nitara cocks a brow and then raises an earlier conversational topic. “Looking for a wife now?”

“No!” he’s quick to reply. “No, no, not now. But in the future, I imagine I’ll have one.”

Nitara’s smile broadens. “Well, why not me?”

“I… thought I couldn’t have children with you, either.”

She shows off her fangs. “Not without you being a moroi, no…”

As she takes a playful step forward, Skarlet does the same, ready to defend her Kahnzedah. Nitara halts and closes her mouth. “Oh, come now. He refused my offer and, much for the same reason that he is so fond of you, I won’t betray his wishes. You should count yourself lucky I like him so much.”

“You would not succeed if you attempted to consume me,” Skarlet says, her voice taking on a threatening edge.

The moroi’s eyes flash with a muted red color. “A pity we’ll never find out.”

She turns away and walks back out into the hall, then, before turning back. “It was wonderful catching up again, Cao. We should do it again sometime.”

“Wait, you’re leaving already?” he asks her, somewhat disappointed to see her come and go.

“We’ll see each other again, do not worry,” she says as her amulet begins to glow red. “Perhaps here, perhaps elsewhere, perhaps in my new home.”

“What about your home, though?” he asks, but he receives no answer as she is surrounded by red energy. With a bright flash, she is gone, leaving him and Skarlet alone once more.

No longer quite so up to kissing since the interruption and slightly dejected from Nitara’s kiss on the thief, the blood construct lets out a soft sigh through her nostrils. “Well, I suppose I should return as well.”

He catches her hand, sensing her unease. “Wait, Skarlet, you have to understand that she’s just that way. I don’t desire her like that.”

Which is a lie, and they both know it well enough. If given the opportunity, he would probably go for another round with Nitara under the sheets. He is who he is, after all.
>>
>>431778

The blood construct understands that this was before their relationship elevated to secret meetings like these. “It is alright, I understand. I just don’t quite feel”

“There’s something else,” he says, making her stop. “All this talk of lineage has made me want to seek out Khameleon.”

She turns and looks him in the eyes. “You’re not thinking of taking her on as a…?” she trails off.

“No, again, no. I’m not looking for that kind of thing right now. But… Well, you were there, Skarlet. You know she gave birth to eight eggs just as much as I do. What does that mean for me? Is she going to try something in the future?”

“You wish them to be destroyed?”

“What? No, I never said that. Why are you so fixated on that?”

Skarlet’s eyes grow soft. “I feel partially responsible for what happened,” she admits. “I was there for the mating. I thought about stopping it, but I thought you wanted it. And then I stayed and watched, rather than being with your sisters, and if I had done so I could have stopped D’Vorah when she took Hua. But I still thought I had to obey your orders then, and you had not summoned me, so… I let it happen.”

“Don’t blame yourself,” he assures her. “What’s done is done. But I want to find her and clear the air, so to speak.”

“Do you wish to leave today?”

“Perhaps tonight. But I was hoping you would come with me.” He looks at her face, trying to measure her reaction. She thinks for a moment, but then nods.

“I will accompany you in case you need assistance, and in case she attempts something I will not hesitate to act this time.”

“Thank you Skarlet.” He lets go of her hand, but she does not immediately move to leave his side. Rather, she continues to look into his eyes. He grows slightly concerned as her silence persists; he can see plainly that something is on her mind. “What is it?”

“What she said about me… I am hoping that you knowing this fact about me does not make me… undesirable,” she says, seeming uncertain. She continues to look for some sign of approval or rejection.

Cao wants to assure her that she is no less desirable to him, and rather than express it with words, he does so with his lips by kissing her again. He moves forward and cups her face, and she does not fight him, happy to welcome him back after their interruption. She seems relieved as he moves her against the wall, holding her tightly as their passion begins to rise again. Their hands begin to roam once more, only now Cao goes a bit further than he had before, brazenly cupping her breast and rear, causing her to gasp.
>>
>>431789

When he breaks away, leaving them both softly panting, he then decides to speak. “No… If anything, I was keeping us from going too far out of fear for the things I spoke of earlier. But if you cannot be with child…” His earlier caution about ‘having too much fun’ and it bringing consequences seems far from his mind now, as all he is fixated on is the fact that with Skarlet, there is fun without the consequences Kotal spoke of.

Her voice grows excited and her eyes seem to dance with a new light. “I did not know you feared such things, otherwise I would have told you earlier. I myself did not wish to rush into something if you were reluctant…”

“I’m not,” he says, moving in to kiss her neck. She moans softly into his ear as he does. “I want you.”

“Gods, I want it too,” she breathes, her fingers tightly gripping his arm. “Ever since Kuatan, and perhaps even before then…”

Something compels him then to ask, “If you cannot be a wife, then will you be by my side, even after I take one?”

“Yes,” she gasps as he bites and pinches. “Yes, I will.” She stops him, however, by placing a hand on his shoulder and pushing him back. “But we will not start today.”

He blinks a few times and stares blankly. “What? Why not?”

She smiles. “I want it to happen, but at the right time for both you and I. You are still unsettled; I want you to be comfortable.”

“My bed can be very comfortable,” he says in an inviting tone.

“I meant of your concerns for your new life. Of the comfort of your bed, I have no doubt; after all, you had a very good time in it with those girls from Earthrealm.”

Now Cao freezes. He knows he cannot lie when she so plainly laid it out like that. “You… Followed me? That night?” He suddenly has a lump in his throat that he swallows.

“Yes, I wanted to make sure you were alright. But I didn’t stay to watch,” she says. As his jaw slightly drops, she pushes it back up with a finger. “I don’t expect to be the only woman in your life, my Kahnzedah. But you must be honest with me. If you wish to take me as a lover, that is what I seek.”

His mind races. “I… I’m sorry. The three of us agreed it would be a secret, and---“

“Shhh,” she now presses her finger to his lips. “I am certain it is a secret; after all, you did not approach me about it. Make no mistake: I am not angry. But as you are the one who is so troubled with who you may one day take as a wife, I must ask: will it be either of them?”

“I don’t know,” he replies. “I’m just… having fun.”

“That is why I want to give you time. Until you know what you truly want, and you are not compelled by ‘baser’ desires into making choices that you will regret, I will wait. This is why I would like to help you ‘clear the air’ with Khameleon.”

“So, you’re really not angry?”
>>
>>431794

“Perhaps I was on that night, but only because you had not told me. You are not sleeping with anyone else, are you?”

“No, no, I swear,” he quickly replies. “…Can we still kiss?”

She gives him a smile. “Yes, of course. After all, I enjoy it too.”

And so they resume. Cao is simultaneously relieved and disappointed---relieved that he had not lost her as a potential lover, but disappointed that it would not happen today. For now, he doesn’t quite mind as he loses himself in her embrace, and in a way he’s anticipating what will come in the future. Skarlet has shown that she is no longer the subservient, willing enforcer she was when Shao Kahn still threatened to take him over; she has set the ground rules. He promises to himself to be more open to her in the future, but first he needs to finish settling in, deal with Khameleon, and down the road see where his fun with Cassie and Jacqui will go. Whether it will continue or cease is yet to be known, and right now, he doesn’t much mind.

More coming soon.

I definitely was not expecting the sloppy makeouts. A bit worried to see how things with Khameleon will play out considering that Skarlet is coming.

Kaito enters the room. It's fairly nondescript, with grey blank walls without any decoration and the only light is focused on the metal table at its center, around which are seated Johnny Cage, Secretary Blake, and Dr. Broddman. There is an empty chair, presumably for Kaito.

"What's going on?" he asks as he sits down.

"We have a problem," Johnny says.

Kaito gives him a questioning look. "Trouble from another realm?"

"Not quite," the actor replies. "This is more of a... ah, internal issue."

"Internal? Something with the team?"

Johnny gives a look to Secretary Blake, who clears his throat. He is a thin man with sullen eyes, thin grey hair and a clean, dark suit. Kaito has only had a few meetings with him, and never on a one-on-one basis, only with others like Johnny in the room. While he can understand the man being considerably busy, as the Secretary of Defense and all, he has always found his attention given to the team as something he isn't terribly enthusiastic about. He has provided funding, clearance and more than Kaito could begin to really know, but he doesn't think he's ever seen the man smile. The man is a politician, one who phrases his words very carefully, and clearly has prepared them ahead of time.

"I understand that we have a team of exceptional individuals, and due to the exceptional threats they potentially face, a number of exceptions are to be made. Some of them would not find service in other organizations dedicated to what we believe in and others still face prejudice from the general public due to being from other realms entirely. But as I feel this team to be necessary to the protection and stability of Earth, I have to be critical of those we let onto the team and I am concerned with recent reports."

Kaito taps his finger on the cold surface of the metal table a few times as he pours over the secretary's words in his head. He looks at Johnny. "Who's he talking about?"

"Sam," Johnny replies, cutting right to the point.

"Sam? What's wrong with her?"

Blake speaks up. "Recent evaluation of each member of the team has allowed us to collect a fair amount of data. As you know, we specifically tested everyone in a variety of tasks, settings and exams. Of course, with only one exception, each member of the team excels in particular ways."

Kaito raises a brow. "The 'only one exception' being Sam, right?"

Blake's face remains still, like a stone. "To put it bluntly, everyone else is better than her at everything she can do."

"That's a little harsh, don't you think?" Kaito asks.

Blake nods at Broddman, who shuffles a series of papers in front of him. Doctor Broddman, the team psychologist with more degrees in obscure mental schools than Kaito has ever heard of, is also an older man with greying hair, a bit fatter than Blake however. The doctor adjusts his thin glasses. "Corporal Stryker's test results were less than average."

"Well, what the hell is average when you're talking about a team like this?" Kaito shrugs.
>>
>>434873

Blake's face breaks his stony visage for a moment as he displays an amount of skepticism. "He means average when compared to the evaluation of standards from military, police and other similar organizations that are primarily volunteer in nature."

Kaito looks over at Johnny, who can only offer a shrug of his own. He looks back at Blake and Broddman before asking, "So, what? She's less than average, but I still feel like she offers something to the team."

Blake looks over at Broddman, who again looks down at his papers. "Corporal Stryker met the qualifications to be a Chicago police officer, but her file notes that she is more suited to clerical deskwork than active patrol. Her academy statistics were---"

Kaito interrupts him. "But that's just a school. She handled herself well in Outworld during Onaga's attack. She helped during our attack on Sun Do."

Broddman once more adjusts his glasses. "To put it frankly, Mr. Akayama, my professional opinion is that her performance in that scenario is due entirely to having much more competent people who were engaged in the conflict alongside her. Their competence, skill and powers allowed her to emerge from the conflict unscathed."

"Well, we're all supposed to look out for each other, that's the point of a team. Even back then, when we didn't know each other well, we still knew that we were all in it together."

Blake speaks up. "Very well, then let us compare her purely to the statistics we gathered from other members of the team."

"I mean, that's hardly fair, I know she doesn't have any powers but---"

Now Blake interrupts him, holding up a hand. "I assure you, this has nothing to do with supernatural abilities. Dr. Broddman, if you would, please."

Broddman looks at his files. "Corporal Stryker placed seventh on marksmanship tests. Top scores were Specialist Briggs, Mr. Kung, Mr. Fireseed, Sergeant Cage, Mr. Takahashi and Mr. Fox."

"Well, she did better than me, I've hardly ever used a gun in my life," Kaito points out.

Broddman notes, "Yes, you scored particularly low in this test, but the key here is that Mr. Takahashi and Mr. Fox do not use firearms in their active role on the team and even they were better than her. I only bring this up because, barring a small number of other tests, this is the only category where she scored higher than most other members of the team."

Kaito is silent as Blake tells Broddman to continue.

"In general fitness, she is strictly average for an adult female of her age, and if you will forgive me for being blunt, her enthusiasm for athleticism is nothing out of the ordinary; comparable to that of someone who runs on the weekend. Comparing her only to other humans on the team, or even comparing her strictly among human females on the team, she is the least physically strong, acrobatic and generally athletic. Specialist Briggs, Sergeant Cage, Ms. Frost and Ms. Kung outclass her in each category."
>>
>>434882

“Well, technically Cassie is descended from a Mediterranean cult that bred warriors for the gods, much like yours truly,” Johnny points out.

Ignoring him, Broddman continues. "In land navigation and general field survival skills, Mr. Fireseed is the most experienced. In written exams, Mr. Jin holds the highest scores. In leadership capability and general----"

Secretary Blake, growing slightly impatient, finally interrupts him. "That's all well and good, those are important skills that she lacks in, but here's the fact that stood out to me the most: she cannot defeat a single other member on the team in single combat without heavily favorable conditions on her side. Without any equipment, weaponry or armor, or even extraordinary latent abilities, each person on the team can still physically overcome at least one or two other members on the team. She cannot."

Kaito is quiet, as Broddman adds, "Furthermore, my personal analysis and interviews have shown her to be generally antisocial, not very outgoing and unconfident. While mentally sound and reserved, she is non-confrontational and submissive. These are not favorable qualities for someone being sent into combat."

Now Kaito cannot help but scoff. "Now you have a problem with her being shy? So is Vapor!"

"Ms. Vrbada can also turn into smoke and is the most capable infiltrator on the team."

He folds his arms. "I thought this wasn't about powers."

Blake takes over. "Well, it is and it isn't. Specialist Briggs is here because of her father. Sergeant Cage is here because of both of her parents," he steals a quick look at Johnny before turning his eyes back to Kaito. "Corporal Stryker, similarly, is here because of her father. But the difference between the former two and the latter is night and day, and again, I bring back my earlier point: even without the assistance of her gauntlets, Specialist Briggs is still capable of subduing other members of the team in close combat. Even without the use of her powers or weaponry, Sergeant Cage can do the same. But Corporal Stryker has only two things going for her: her last name and a vague message from a god."

"Is the word of that god not good enough for you?" Kaito asks. "He said specifically that she has potential."

He can see Blake trying not to roll his eyes. "Potential. Mr. Akayama, I deal in results. I am well aware of the fact that gods, demons and monsters exist and are things that necessitate the existence of this team. It is for that exact reason that I do not believe Corporal Stryker has any place on this team. She is not a soldier, not a leader, not possessed of any supernatural or greater-than-average skills. To put it simply, every single member of the team is better than her, and I do not find it to be a worthy investment on the part of our program to keep her on board."

Before Kaito can respond to the callousness of the secretary, Johnny jumps in.
>>
>>434891

"Now, look, Kaito-I understand the sentiment, I do. I like Raiden as much as the next guy. Personally, I really like Sam. I think she's a fine young woman and all, but until some magical 'potential' unleashes itself and she starts, I don't know, walking through walls or lifting cars with her mind, then the most I can say about her is that she kind of grounds the team, you know? Brings a human element to us who have walked alongside the aforementioned gods and demons." His eyes stray over to Blake and Broddman. "But... that 'human element' isn't really quantifiable, you know?"

"She's made friends on this team," Kaito protests.

Johnny nods and speaks before the other two can. "I know. But that might actually be part of the problem, because what happens when we take her and put her in a rough situation and she gets hurt or worse? Is that responsible of us, just because she's a Stryker, or that Raiden said so?"

"It is irresponsible," Blake agrees.

Kaito is silent. Johnny scratches the back of his head. "And... there's another thing that deserves to be brought up. I mean, it's got nothing to do with our evaluation of her, and she's an adult and can make her own choices, but..."

He takes out his cell phone and presses a few buttons. He sets it down and activates the speaker function. A man's voice comes out.

"Johnny, this is Kurtis. I've finally gotten word from my daughter and I want her off of your team, you son of a bitch. You think I'm alright with her borderline being kidnapped and whisked off to Outworld to fight in some other realm's civil war? You have absolutely no goddamned right to take her like you did. You return her to Chicago right now before I sue your goddamned Hollywood ass for all it's worth you-"

Johnny presses the button and offers a sheepish smile. "He goes on like that for a bit, mostly about me, you don't need to hear that."

"The hell did you ever do to him, anyway?" Kaito asks.

"No clue," Johnny shrugs. "I'm not worried about any of his threats, but we're going public with the team next week. He could have a bit of effect on our PR, I mean, people still like the guy."

"Why would he do that?"

"He went to considerable length to hide his daughter from the public," Broddman says. "He used connections with various police institutions to have her records become hard to find. Of course, our influence is greater than his, but were it not for her... unique method of recruiting, Corporal Stryker would likely have never been considered."

Johnny nods. "I didn't even know he had a daughter. Guy never returns my calls, that message there was the only time he's ever actually called me."

Kaito folds his arms. "So, what do you want us to do? Just kick her out?"

"It's for the best," Blake says.
>>
>>434906

Johnny gives Kaito a sympathetic look. The Japanese man himself is conflicted; they raise good points about her safety, but there’s something that continues to gnaw at the back of his mind. He doesn’t want to just show the poor girl the door, but he doesn’t want to sour his relationship with the man giving the team its funds, personnel and other important resources. At the same time, he doesn’t care too much about all that---this is his and Johnny’s team. But Johnny wants to keep the government happy a bit more than he does, and Broddman is paid by Blake, so it seems like Sam’s only defense will come from Kaito.

After silently debating it for several moments, he looks at them and gives them his answer.
