"Watch out!"

This time it's Hiss who pulls you to safety, reaching down and grabbing you by the shoulders and pulling you up atop the wall with her just in time to avoid a tidal wave of pigment that crashes against the wall.
And then it rises once more, a wall of liquid red that completely surrounds the mansion and the gardens from all sides.

"Get ready to fight!," Hiss hollers. "It is upon us!"

"Quickly!," another voice rings out. It's Aqua, pushing a makeshift cart with her good hand and accompanied by one of the hollow alchemists. You can't remember his name.
The cart is filled with bottles.
"Everyone take a potion. Take it now!"

The wall of red parts and you can see spirits emerging through it like deep-sea monsters and behind them, a sea of hands.

We are the distraction! Also, Aggie can help us out quite a bit more if we get her into the Dreaming, no? Maybe we can even get other spirits to help us to stop the Gatekeeper (who has betrayed the creator, and devoured other spirits).

Also, can't we do some crazy brewing shenanigans there as well?
>>
>>417553
Nah Art doesn't work in the dreaming at all. And the gatekeeper is in the real world now, not the dreaming.
>>
>Take to the sky and seek out the Gatekeeper himself.

There’s no use dallying, just staying back to defend might be safer but it won’t get anything done. And with that in mind, you muster Aggie’s power and leap into the air. You rise above the tides, cresting them just in time before they close over your head. For a brief moment, you hang suspended over the compound, everything mapped out beneath your feet.

Orange scrambles out of the way as a hand larger than he is fumbles blindly for him, Aqua pulling him to the side as one of Hiss’ risen dead chops the hand in half.

Aashenpreet emerging from the ruined mansion and plainly not sure what to make of herself. She isn’t a fighter. A five-legged skeleton clothed in a swarm of frozen leaves swoops down upon her and you are far too distant to help her.

Oster pushes her out of the way, his sword clashing uselessly with the spirit’s fangs as it falls upon him instead. His hand goes to the Spiritslayer bottle hanging from his belt and then he is obscured from view.

Everyone is doing their best just to stay alive. It’s up to you to make sure that their efforts aren’t in vain! Aggie’s wings burst into being around you as you turn towards the pillar of handprints in the distance. You’ve been brewing for this moment, your pack is fully stocked and it’s finally t-

Something grabs onto your foot and pulls you down. Oh shit1 Aggie lashes out but the frozen lance shatters uselessly against a coat of thick black scales.

“Moron! You think you’re gonna leave me behind?”
It’s Hiss, having somehow leapt up here and latched herself onto you. She’s clinging to a frozen boot, your one good leg.
“I’ve got to give that spirit arsehole a piece of my mind!”

>Drop her back down. This is too dangerous! Someone has to live.

You do your best to reach down without destabilizing Aggie and grab hold of Hiss’ hand, pulling her up. She grabs hold of your shoulders and you barely dip in the air. Aggie can handle the extra weight.
“You’re a lot colder than I remember you,” Hiss says as she wraps an arm around your shoulders.

Oh right. Aggie. You’d almost forgotten that she’d affect Hiss too at this proximity.
“Is that going to be a problem?”

She snorts and leans into you.
“It’d have to be a lot colder than this.”

She feels almost warm by comparison and for the briefest of moments, you almost want to just stop here. To savor this time while you can. To do something, anything else rather than to throw the both of you into what is almost certain death.
“Thanks for coming, Hiss. It means a lot to me.”

“What, did you think I was actually going to let you do this on your own?”

“Maybe? I mean, this is seriously dangerous. We might never com-”

She kisses you. She tastes like venom and old blood and new death and it feels just like coming home.
“We’re not going to lose. I’m here. Do you really think I’m going to let you die without my permission?”

You smile in spite of yourself. You can’t help it.
“Of course. I nearly forgot.”

“See to it that that never happens again. Now…”
The arm around your shoulder lifts for just a second, Hiss pointing to the Gatekeeper’s manifestation.
“I’d appreciate it if we stopped standing around.”

“As you command, your Majesty.”

You make sure she’s holding on tight and then away you go, Aggie carrying the two of you towards the maelstrom. The ground is but a blur beneath you, eyes opening in the stained ground to track your approach as you draw ever closer to the writhing column that towers over Taldenral.

-Cennen.-

“Yes, Aggie?”
Hiss looks askance at you but doesn’t say anything.

-The Gatekeeper is ready for us. We should slow our approach.-

>Alright. That’ll give you time to think something up.

"No thanks Hiss. But I have a better idea."
You don't give her time to respond, hurtling yourself upwards further and further into the mottled sky.
You'll have to make sure you don't accidentally run into the Gate.

You climb higher and higher until you're above the Gatekeeper's manifestation, the vaguely humanoid pillar of smeared handprints. Stick-thin arms wobble through the air incoherently as further handprints spread from in the vague outline of wings.

'Alright," Hiss manages to say. "This might be a better idea. You keep us in the air, I'll handle the rest."
She's grabbed a Spiritslayer from her pack and is ready to throw it.

The manifestation inclines its handprint-head towards you and you don't slow down, flying both of you right towards the top of it.

"You're not helping, damn it!"
Hiss nearly drops the bottle.

"I know you can do it, Hiss!"
And you realise it as you speak, you're not just saying that to encourage her. You genuinely believe it.

Hiss' grip on your shoulder becomes painful but you keep flying on, racing right over the top of the Gatekeeper!
She throws and Aggie shields your eyes just in time as the bottle smashes straight into the hand that had been serving as the thing's head. There's a white-hot burst and a titanic spray of red as Hiss essentially decapitates the monstrosity.

The column beneath you wobbles, the top of it torn off and exposing the hollow centre within it. The eye of the storm.

"Cennen!"
-Above!-

Aggie and Hiss sound off at the exact same time and you realize that you've gotten just a little too close to the Gate. Red hands descend from the Gate, whatever fragment of the Gatekeeper still in the Dream reaching out to swat you from the air!

Hiss climbs atop you, standing on your back with her arms outstretched. She takes the first hand head-on as it attempts to crush you, grabbing it with both arms just inches above you and slowly pushing it back.
The Gatekeeper's hand strains against Hiss, a brief battle of strength against strength. And then it bursts, Hiss ripping it apart.
"Is that all you got?"

-No.-

Eight more hands lunge down from the Gate.

With a mental signal, Aggie stops flying altogether and you begin to drop. The hands from the Gate clutch at nothing but air as you and Hiss hurtle downwards, aimed directly for the belly of the beast.

You grab a Haywire brew as you drop, handing Hiss a Spirit Poison at the same time. The air is rushing past you to fast to speak so in the end, all you can do is hold on.

The handprints near the top wriggle as you drop towards them, sprouting arms as they burst into abrupt third dimension. Arms zigzag out and begin to cover the opening, all trying to stop you!

"Hold on!," Hiss yells as she rummages through your pack for something else.

She throws an Extra Improved Spiritslayer Flask ahead of you.

Not even Aggie can shield your eyes properly this time and you nearly go blind for a crucial moment as you drop down.

You see streaks of red and black.

The explosion blooms around you as you fall right through it.

Something warm and sticky.

The air howls/

And then your vision clears and a hand is coming right at you! Aggie sparks back into life and throws you to the side.

Your mind grows cold as the hand passes just above you and you tumble out of control, the world spinning around you as you roll through the air.
Someone's grabbed hold of you and you can't get them off!

And then you hit the ground and for the briefest moment, everything goes white.

You steady yourself a moment later, pain only warded off by the potions coursing through your system.
Where are you? What happened?

You're lying atop a slab of broken masonry, a ruined heap that used to be somebody's home. Hiss is beside you, bent over you protectively. She's bathed head to toe in red pigment.

"You're alive," she mutters. "Good."
She's quieter than usual.

"Is something wrong, Hiss?"

She smiles.
"No. Everything is fine."
She pries a piece of scale-shrapnel from her shoulder and for a moment, everything comes into focus. That isn't just pigment covering her. There's Spiritslayer shrapnel all over her body, poking holes through even her scales. She shielded you from the blast as you fell through it.
"I'm alright," she says. "I'm just happy you're alive."

You look past her and see nothing but red, handprints overlapping each other so fast that they've become a solid wall of colour. And not just behind her but around as well. You're surrounded in every direction.

The two of you are in the very eye of the storm.

You down another stimulant and your mind clears, Aggie’s grip on your soul growing weaker as she feeds off the stimulated energy. Hiss is laughing, a slow and tired sound.
“Alright Cennen, I think this is what they call a target-rich environment.”

There are pockmarks all over her body. Blood’s still flowing.
“Hiss…”

“What? Come on, we need to get to work before he turns himself inside out.”

“You’re hurt.”

“It’s not a big deal,” she says defensively.

“I can’t leave you like this, your safety takes priority.”
You reach out to touch her but she slaps your hand away.

“Ignore this,” she commands you. “Do your duty and fight alongside your Queen.”
She throws the Spirit Poison bottle she’d grabbed earlier and the entire world shakes as the many hands of the Gatekeeper begin to tear through his own body, desperately trying to reach the two of you from the outside.

-Stop!-

“Should have thought about that before coming here, moron! You take a body, you have to play by its rules! Cennen, give me another brew before he figures something out.”

“No, this is too dangerous and I-”

She slaps you across the face, Aggie’s ice manifesting to protect you from harm. She can’t touch you.
“I command you to forget about me and fight! Now reload me!”
She nearly trips over her own feet, slick with blood.

You find yourself handing Hiss the Poison before you even notice. It's been a long time since you've tried to go up against one of her direct commands like this.

"This isn't right."

Hiss places a finger across your lips. It tastes like blood.
"What happened to believing in me? Just because this looks impossible doesn't mean it actually is!"

You take a step back. And then another. Something's different. Even the slight chill is gone, your mind warm and free.
"What did you do?"

"I gave that spirit abomination of yours a few hundred souls. I trust that should be enough to lighten your burden?"

-YES-

Aggie's monotone comes through loud and clear, the pain of existence more than staved off.
And with that rush of power, the Gatekeeper rips himself open and hundreds of limbs rush towards you.

Hiss uncorks the Spirit Poison and douses herself in it, coating herself in the clear and somewhat viscous liquid.
"Just have my back, moron."

Well, you guess there's no point holding anything back now.

>>
>>418408
This is seriously the only quest I care about. We rely on you to tell the story, there's nothing wrong with you relying on us every once in a while.
>>
>>418408
Nigga, I've enjoyed every step of the way. Every painful mistake, every regret as we tried to do the right thing and traded away bits of our morality. Slowly seeing Hiss grow less evil in the classical sense of selfishness, and having to face up to our own growing moral greyness.

Have you seen Black Lagoon? Cennen reminds a lot of Rock. A guy who believed he would always be good, and was in a sense better than those around him, who had to choose between his morals and those he cared about.

You should be fucking proud of how you handled Cennen and Hiss' journey over the course of this quest. Of writing believable characters that had to face actual consequences to their actions, not just in how they affected the world but how the world and their choices affected them and let them grow as individuals.

It's sad that you no longer feel connected enough to them, but it's understandable. It's been a long, long quest. And you've written a world so immersive that there isn't ever really an "end" but just a point where the story stops.

I don't think anybody could ask a writer to do more than what you've done, and for you to do it as a GM with an autistic and random player base is nothing short of phenomenal.
>>
>Charge in right beside her.

Ice forms around you as Aggie musters your defence and you take off with a spirit-enhanced leap, catching up with Hiss and passing her in a single fluid motion.
"Hey!"
She catches back up to you a moment later.
"What do you think you're doing? Shouldn't you be tossing bottles or whatever?"

"I seem to recall somebody lamenting that I never spent any time by her side in these battles."

Hiss' face softens.
"Aww, that's sw-"

A massive hand smashes her into the ground, only for her to rise a second later, holding the offending limb above her head.
"We were having a moment, damn it!"

The hand bubbles beneath her touch, Hiss still drenched in the Spirit Poison. But before it can dissolve entirely, Hiss leaps atop it and runs down its length towards the rest of the Gatekeeper.
She's laughing like a maniac as she is lost from view in an incoherent tangle of limbs, burning through one after the other.

"Come on Aggie, time to put those souls to use."

You take back to the air, your wooden arm growing outward into another spear. A hand lunges for you and you turn to face, Aggie coating your spear in ice as you impale the hand before it can even touch you. The empowered homonculus is in your every movement and you've never felt so light. You've never felt so strong.
Is this how Hiss feels all the time?

Another Improved Spiritslayer flask helps clear the way and you catch sight of Hiss in the maelstrom, the snake leaping forward with both blood and pigment streaming around her.
A hand catches her before she can advance too far but it only stops her for a moment before she just pushes and continues onward, dragging the hand before her like a shield. Three more hands brace the first in a vain attempt to slow her. Five more. Seven more.

And then you lose sight of her again as an eye opens in the air before you and from its iris, six new crimson hands spring forth. They all latch onto you before you can stop them but only for a moment as the air around you explodes in ice.

"Are you okay, Aggie?"

-For the first and only time in my life, I am powerful. You can trust me to protect you Cennen.-

"Thanks."

You descend towards the wriggling knot of hands, intent on saving Hiss from being buried alive.
You stab one with your spear and throw it aside, using it as a shield against the strike of another. You push a hand away and then it's all rendered moot as Hiss decides to bust free by herself.

Hands explode outwards as Hiss skyrockets in size, burning souls by the dozen as her Worldbreaker Coils escalate her to over a hundred feet tall in the blink of an eye.

You don't quite get out of the way in time either and while Hiss wasn't quite able to catch you, a different part of her was.
You're trapped! Aggie knocks you from side to side but to no avail.
-I can't break free!-

Hiss reaches down and picks you out of her shirt.
"Getting a bit ahead of yourself, are we?"
She's loud enough to nearly blow your eardrums.

>Let her take Aggie.

"Why?"

Your voice barely reaches her.
"What? Speak up!"
You clutch your ears and Hiss finally seems to realise what she's doing to you.

Good thing this brand connection still works. Good work on not losing your other arm. Now, I'm fucking sick of fighting nothing but projections. I'm going to wrestle this whole damn manifestation to the ground but problem is, that's a real spirit. So let me take Aggie, alright?

"Is this okay with you, Aggie?"
Doing something like this is almost certain to kill the homunculus after all.

-I have long made my peace with this fact.-

You give Hiss the nod and she picks you back up from her shoulder, still fighting off arms with her other hand. Instead of putting you anywhere else, she simply holds you in front of her face.

Hurry up and meet my eyes Cennen! I need to eat the homunculus out of you!

"I'm trying!"
You look directly at her eyes, giant glistening pools of soft brown and white. But she's not looking at yours. Or at least, she's trying. But all she's managing is to look cross-eyed.
"Maybe go a bit smaller so you can see them properly?"

"I can't do that," Hiss whines, forgetting your poor ears in the process. "The moment I go back down, we get swamped in arms again!"

"Ow. Okay. I have a different idea. You handle the 'keeper, me and Aggie will attack the Gate! That's the halo! I think."

Hiss looks a little disappointed but in the end simply shrugs.
"We can give that a try."
You wince and she looks appropriately chagrined.

Hold on!

You grab hold of her collar as she starts to move, throwing herself at the wall of the red cyclone entrapping the both of you. Hundreds of hands rise to stop her but she tears through them with ease, ripping them apart and stomping them beneath her boots as she grabs hold of the Gatekeeper's self-inflected wound and charges through.

A wall of red rushes up to meet you and it is all you can do to keep clinging to her collar. Aggie manifests all around you, warding off several dozen attacks as Hiss breaks free.

And then you're out, back into the clear air. You can see Taldenral beneath you and to the side, the vast pillar of painted handprints that you had just ripped your way out of.

It's long and its tall and its vast, the Gatekeeper's manifestation towering over Hiss in much the same way she towers over you.

-Do you really think that such a pitiful increase would help you now that you have given up your last sanctuary?-
The Gatekeeper's spindly limbs reach out for you....

...and Hiss destroys all her souls at once.

You do your best to hold onto her rapidly growing collar, the individual threads becoming not only large enough to hold onto but almost as big as you! You look out below but you can't even see Taldenral now, there's too much...Hiss in the way.

Hiss is still standing before the Gatekeeper but he barely comes up to her chest now. The Gate swirls just above her head.
1/2
>>
>>418604
She has to be at least 1500 feet tall.

Hiss extracts you from her collar with ease, balancing you on the tip of her finger. Or at least you think it's the tip. It's scaled platform wide enough to hold at least a dozen of you.
But it's getting smaller.

Hiss burned everything to get here and she's already beginning to diminish. You can't afford to waste anymore time.

Without saying a word, Hiss simply reaches up and deposits you and Aggie right below the Gate.
And then the Gatekeeper breaks apart and rushes her and she is obscured from your sight in a storm of red.

"Hiss!"
As if she'd hear you anyway.

>It's time to attack the Gate itself with alchemy.

You can't afford to waste any of the time that Hiss has bought for you! Aggie rushes you through the air towards the portal and you uncork your final Dispel Elixir.
Below you, you can see Hiss fight free of the Gatekeeper's grasp and start striking back. But alas, her attacks can only disperse the smaller spirit, not actually destroy it. He's a particulate monster, made of too many hands and arms and eyes to be destroyed by a single blow.

The Dream fills the sky above you and you count the seconds as Aggie speeds you towards the edge of the portal. It needs to be the edge, the halo itself. Otherwise the Gate itself will just swallow it up harmlessly.

3...

Your wooden arm lengthens and extends, becoming springy and brimming with energy.

2...

The edge of the horizon is fast approaching, the battle between Hiss and the Gatekeeper's manifestation crushing Taldenral beneath them.

1...

A cluster of arms suddenly emerge around the Gate's edge and you curse. Of course! He'd left part of himself still back in the Dream!

But it's too late now. You throw the bottle.

Your throw would have been accurate. It would have hit the edge exactly. The Elixir would have burst and the Gate would have been struck, the very halo of the Gatekeeper itself undone.
But there are countless hands protruding from the Dream, braces of assimilated spirits ready to defend their collective master. They reach for the Elixir in the air and you know its hopeless. They're going to stop it. There's nothing you can do.

Could Aggie grow a bunch of limbs and empty out your pack in a quick barrage to clear the way? Possibly. But the explosions from such would almost certainly destroy the Elixir itself.
There's nothing that can be done.

And then time seems to slow to a halt.

-Cennen. I have come to understand that every moment of life for something like me is itself a blessing. Thank you for each and every one of them.-

The hands stop as something fierce and powerful and impossibly cold releases itself from you, an invisible shockwave of power that strikes the limbs and only them.
Each outstretched arm stops and freezes solid and decays in an instant, releasing not red but only blue light.

For a moment, even the harsh light of the Dream is drowned out and the only thing to grace the sky is an impossible aurora.
Aggie has undone herself and in that instant of nonexistence, every stolen soul given to her has been destroyed for a single moment of power.

The soundless explosion buffets you forward, crimson hands dissolving all around you as you fly past the world of the Dream just in time to see your thrown Elixir finally strike home.

It breaks apart and the Gate begins to dissolve. Below you, the manifestation that Hiss is still wrestling with begins to waver and fall apart.

"Thanks Aggie."

-Stop that!-

And then a hundred more limbs sprout from the Dream and as you watch dumbfounded, hold the halo open. It's still falling apart but much slower now, pure Dream essence rushing forth in waves to slow its decay.
What? Shouldn't he be dead?

-Remember that I only sent part of myself into your world, mortal. That of me that still lives within the Dream has no need for halos. And that part of me can hold it steady long enough for me to kill both of you!-

There's nothing holding you in the air anymore. You begin to fall.

>Who cares about falling? Keep attacking the halo.
>Use the Caster to propel yourself back at the halo.

You didn't create Aggie purely so that she could be born to die, no matter what she said. You made her with the hope of being able to come up with a way that she could keep on living with all your other children.
And because of that, you refuse to believe that her death was in vain. The halo is dying, the Gatekeeper is just being slow about it.

So it might be up to you to finish the job. But can you really fight through all of that on your own.

Beneath you, a large part of the Gatekeeper's manifestation splatters itself across the landscape as Hiss smashes her fist through it. And above you, the entire Gate wavers and warps and grows just a little bit weaker. The hands holding it open visibly strain.

"Hah!," Hiss exclaims at a volume probably loud enough to deafen the entire city. What's left of it anyway.
"Give it up already, you old cunt! All I have to do is keep whacking your body around and your halos gonna need more and more power. Power that you don't have left!"
She looks up at you and then straight through you. She can't see you right now, you're practically a mote of dust to her. Hiss managing to catch you would be an adventure in itself.

But that's fine. You don't plan on being caught. Because you're still planning on killing that damn Gate. Your previous hesitation is gone, erased by the reminder that it isn't just you fighting it, it's both of you attacking together from different angles. And against the two of you, who really stands a chance?

You unsling your Caster and fire the loaded Snakebreaker straight down, the force of the shot immediately propelling you right back towards the Gate!
Your wooden arm grows around the Caster as you ascend, roots and branches growing to support it even as roots grow into your pack. New potions are instantly picked up by your vines and carried from one branch to another to be slotted into the Caster even as another vine is already winding it up.

You fire an Extra Improved Spiritslayer at the clusters still holding the halo open. The Caster is loaded again moments later and you fire again. And again. And again. And again.

And then, as you finally fall out of range, Hiss finally sees where you are. But she doesn't try to catch you. She simply stands up beneath you. You've wound up sitting atop her head and from there, even as she still fights the Gatekeeper himself, you are well within range to pound the Gate over and over again.

Each shot rips and tears through several arms at once and the psychic screams of the Gatekeeper can be heard with each one.

The Gate wavers and shrinks in stops and starts, growing smaller with each shot. Growing smaller with each fist Hiss launches into the manifestation's body, each strike louder than thunder.

-Enough! When will either of you learn that this is futile?-

Hiss laughs, loud enough to almost cause you physical pain.

>>
>>418857
Just so you know, this thread has been totally badass. Especially the last several updates.
>>
>>418857
"Maybe when you've learned not to be drippy old cunnnnnnnnnnnargh!"

Her earthshaking cry is cut off as the manifestation wavers and falls apart...and then swarms over her as it did in the start of the fight. But this is different, the Gatekeeper is coming apart.

For just a brief moment, it ceases to be the Gatekeeper entirely, the particulate mass of hands and arms and eyes becoming instead a disparate swarm of hundreds of spirits. And as they strike Hiss and crawl across her body, they quiver and change back into hands. In addition, the red pigment that Hiss is coated in springs back to life, thousands of hands gripping Hiss all over!

But of course, even though each hand is larger than a person, to Hiss it was more or less as walking into a large swarm of gnats. Extremely unpleasant, for sure, but nothing actually capable of hindering her.
She simply strides forward, leaving immense footprints in Taldenral itself as the swarm bounces off her scaled skin. Sure, a few hands manage to get into her many wounds but aside from that they might as well have been doing nothing.

"This is a bit improper, isn't it?"
And of course, Hiss isn't taking it seriously.
"We haven't even held hands and you're already going so fast!"

And then every single part of the Gatekeeper coating her dissolves and reforms into a single long arm that's large enough to cram itself into her 50-foot mouth.

"Mmrm! Hrmpmmm!"

Hiss starts to spasm, destroying the Gatekeeper as best you can. The halo is melting. What the fuck is the Gatekeeper doing? As far as you can tell, he's just made it easier for Hiss to destroy him.

-I didn't want to do this! I knew that to attempt this would be to risk total destruction. But you and your mortal leave me no choice! I have come for you Serpent Queen, not for your oversized shell but for your SOUL-

Ah fuck. By reaching into her mouth like that he can bypass her Scale Art, including her anti-magic one.

-Did you think I didn't notice you burning every soul you possessed? Now you are without them to protect you, without them to stop me from simply reaching in and grasping your innermost being!-

And then the long arm still forcing its way down Hiss' throat freezes. Did Hiss do something?

And then you see it, a long tendril of black creeping its way back down the immense crimson arm like some kind of corrupted vein. And it's quickly joined by more and more.

The arm retracts in visible panic but its too late, the entire limb has been stained black. As it falls, the corruption races outwards and snares every other part of the Gatekeeper.
Red hands become black, pigment stains become creeping pits of pitch-black venom, crimson eyes shut forever.

-No!-

"Oh shut up."
It's a new voice, not unlike Hiss' own.

The Gate above you explodes as the every piece of the Gatekeeper is dragged down, something having seized him by a metaphysical thread and pulling with irresistible might.
And then all is black.
>>
>>418921

>>
>>418938

>>
>>418947
I think it's fair, she should know how busy we were. Not to mention that we never stopped trying to get better at making bodies. I doubt she would want to be something like Hom. It's a fair enough excuse anyway, wanting to make a body worthy of her yadda yadda.
>>
>>418921
When you next open your eyes, the world has changed. The sky is dark, a faint silvery-black that spreads from horizon to horizon. And yet you can see a curvature to it, as if all of Taldenral had suddenly become enclosed in some kind of dome.

And Taldenral itself has changed. Cobblestones have become basalt and obsidian, once humble streets have become huge and sprawling. It flips around and eats itself, parts of city simply floating in the air as it is all slowly remade into a spiky nest of black spires.

And amidst it all sits Hiss, still towering over every building despite sitting down. You're still on her head and as far as you can tell, she seems to have woken up at the same time you have.

"Well, well."
A most familiar voice. So much like Hiss and yet so much not.
"Well well well well well well well."

Naja suddenly oozes into being next to you atop Hiss' head. She's the exact same as the last time you saw her but she seems to be a little more...solid. You can't explain it.

"Naja?"

"Oh consort, always so good at stating the obvious! Now...when I said I wanted a way out this isn't quite what I had in mind."

"Oi!"
Hiss's voice shakes the earth and you see her hand come up, ready to grab both of you.

Naja simply shakes her masked head.
"Too loud. Cennen, you don't mind if I turn her down, do you?"

You and Naja are suddenly standing in the streets of the altered Taldenral and Hiss has completely vanished. Or so you think, until you hear a high-pitched and almost inaudible screeching from the top of your head.
You pick up Hiss, the Serpent Queen less than inch tall and looking extremely bad-tempered about it.

"I barely did anything," Naja says, sounding extremely proud of herself. "Just reached into her Art and messed with the direction it was going."

"Put her back."

Naja pretends to think about it.
"No."

"Can you do it as a favour? ...A favour to your loyal consort?"

Hiss looks extremely annoyed from down on top of your fingertip but you can't hear her objections.

Naja simply chuckles once more.
"Oh Cennen, don't you remember us moving past that? And besides, I'm very annoyed with you. What happened to making my body?"

"It-"

"I already know the answer anyway. So here's how its going to go Cennen. I'm going to do nasty things to you and Hiss and everyone else because, my excellently polite exterior or not, I am extremely pissed off."

"W-"

"No. Actually, you could just think of me having replaced the Gatekeeper as your ultimate cosmic enemy! Only you can't fight me. Or do anything really."

You don't believe her. That curvature you saw earlier...this might be her Dreaming but its limited. It only covers this city. She's nowhere near as omnipotent as she would have you believe. She's bluffing.

'Still," Naja says. "Maybe if you come over and kiss my boots and swear your soul to mine for all eternity, I might be able to get over how much of a boor you've become and forgive you. It's your choice."

Naja lifts her hand and bats the shot out of the air, deflecting the shrapnel and the explosion into oblivion.

You have no idea what she's talking about.
"And yet you can't make me kneel. You have to ask."

Naja sighs.
"To be honest Cennen, you seem like you're in a lot of turmoil. Or maybe you're always like that? I don't know what answer disgusts me more. Now that I have a whole city to play with, you've stopped seeming so cool. >>
>>419208

>>
>>419243
Shitposting is better than no posting, I suppose. Anons at the point of actually getting mad at each other just means people are invested in the quest. These choices are important to them.
>>
So before I go to work, a note on Naja. She's not quite omnipotent. She can't MAKE you do or say anything.
But while you're in her Dreaming she can choose to turn any action you do that would normally not require a roll into an action that needs a roll.

She can also declare to do whatever she wants to you or anyone else, as long as you get a roll to resist. The resist roll is easy, it only needs all 3 rolls to be above 10.

She can also insert her own rolls however as long as she gets into the first 3. But this bit in particular is a bit more tiring than the other bits.
>>
>>419271
So basically we have to be a lot quicker than her at rolling. Sounds like a tall order.
>>
>>419271
>however as long as she gets into the first 3

This is what I kind of assumed, but I was worried that it's a little skewed because you know when you've posted, I typically alt tab out. But also this should encourage the anons that do what the thread and are too afraid to roll to just roll anyway asap.

I actually like this, I'm thinking of drawing something with sneks and dice. I'd have done a lot more shit scribbles if I didn't have to turn off my 4chan extension every time I want to draw something.

Ok goodnight for real, thanks for running Ouro.
>>
>>419279
Yup. Which is why I added that inserting her own rolls is tiring for her. She can't do it forever.
>>
>>419271

Update in an hour or so
>>
>Wake up

Harsh orange light sneaks past your eyelids and sets your brain on fire. You thrash around and turn away but it's too late, you're well and truly awake.

You have woken in an unfamiliar alleyway which, considering that your last memory is facing down Naja, is somewhat of a surprising development. Your life has been too damn full of surprises lately.

The sky above you is dark, the light of a setting sun offset by strange dark clouds and a persistent haze in the air above you. The very air itself is different, dirty and irritating to breathe. After a brief moment of panic you determine that you aren’t accidentally lying on top of Hiss. In fact, Hiss doesn’t seem to be here at all. Neither is Naja.
You are completely alone.

You get to your feet and walk along the alleyway, noting that the brick walls seem to possess a kind of detritus to them, a harsh black powder staining the upper sides.

You step out into a very different Taldenral than the one you left. It is still recognizeably Taldenral, the shape of the city and the way it all flows towards the ocean is unmistakeable. But the horizon of the city has changed. Where once there was humble buildings and stone towers, the city is dotted with jet-black buildings not unlike those that you saw Naja pulling up earlier. Long chimney spires dot the skyline, each one spewing out a constant stream of smoke into the world.
The streets themselves, while curiously empty, are different also. They are lined with strange alchemical contraptions, lanterns that give off a flickering orange light. And the gutters are as full of trash as always but the content of the garbage has changed.

You dredge out a sodden rag of what seems to be some kind of cheap paper, already half a mess with sodden ink. It’s...some kind of sheet? Many pages folded together, each one filled with blurred ink and differing sizes of lettering. That itself is cause for alarm. Printing presses are, as far as you know, a new and exciting technology. So what kind of machine would you need to mass-produce something like this.

It reminds you of Hiss’ propaganda pamphlets that she was so excited about.

You can just barely make out some of the words printed upon the front page.
ROYAL DECREE: HUMAN CURFEW ANNOUNCED[/b[

You don’t understand any of this. Why would Naja send you here? Where is here anyway?

>Wander towards the centre of the false Taldenral.

Lacking anything better to do, you decide to strike out towards the centre of the city. That's where the royal palace is, after all! If Naja is anywhere, that's where she'll be.
Presuming, of course, that Naja is even here at all.

The grimy streets are empty, doors and windows shut and latched. Even though the night has barely begun, nobody is out tonight. Can a curfew really be that severe?

As you make your way towards the centre, the districts get cleaner and nicer-looking. Wealth becomes more and more self-evident, though even the homes of the rich are stained by the powder in the air.
But as the streets grow richer, they also grow more and more crowded. People are actually outside, walking and talking and doing perfectly human things.

Once upon a time you would have mistaken these beautiful well-dressed people for nobles. They're all snakes. The only humans here are servants and amongst the beautiful rich they stand out like a sore thumb.

It is around this point that you are nearly killed by a strange machine. A wheeled contraption moving down the centre of the street roars at you, a metal box with large spiked wheels and at the back, something that you can only describe as an alchemical engine, gleaming metal and glass tubing filled with unknown brews.

Everyone is looking at you rather strangely.

>Keep going

The streets, as familiar as they seem, are also incalculably alien but you don't let that daunt you. You keep going through the bizarre procession of snakes in human clothes, wrapped in human ways. You don't see any noblemen who aren't snakes. You don't think there are any.

But you stand out more and more as you go along and it's only a matter of time before you drew the wrong attention.
You slowly become aware that two snakes, a man and a woman are following you. They wear the same finery as everyone else but their manner is a touch darker. There's an edge to the way they're looking at you.

>Nobble

You're not really planning on running or hiding from these two. They're just snakes! And somehow, a pair of snakes don't seem all that intimidating anymore.
But you can't take them on here, not where everyone can see.

You pick up the pace and watch as they speed up too. They're not closing in too quick, they're trying to give you distance. But they shouldn't be able to do that for too long, snakes aren't known for their stamina. So they'll catch up to you and confront you soon enough.

With that in mind, you quickly turn into the next alleyway you see and break into a sprint. Your wooden leg, finally set properly in place, makes a loud clattering as you round the corner and then stop, finding yourself trapped behind the back of a building.

Three seconds later, the snakes round the corner. The man is almost seven feet tall with shaggy red hair and a wide build. He's wearing a set of clothes that reminds you of Hiss' outfit only heavily formalized, long trousers with a buttoned-up jacket over what looks to be some kind of tunic and a vest. The entire ensemble is a dark gray with incredibly thin white stripes that only serve to make the rest of it look darker.
The woman is wearing the same, both appearing to be exquisitely tailored to their physique but likely just grown from skinchanging. She is lithe where he is thick and there's a distinct familiarity to her pointed features that you only understand when her hat comes loose, revealing glossy black hair cut short and perfectly straight, level with her jaw.

Looks like Hiss is fashionable these days.

"You human?," the girl calls out while the man removes a folded slip of black leather from his pocket. He unfolds it to reveal a symbol you recognise immediately, the same ouroboros imprinted on your hand embossed into what looks to be a block of something strange and glossy.
"Shed your skin," he says. "Or you're under arrest for breaking curfew."

Alright, you're probably nobbling these two jokers. But how?

Sorry about the huge delay on this one.

>Show them your brand.

"Woah, hold on a minute. Wait. Wait."

You hold your left hand out, displaying the brand etched onto your palm. If this place is what you think it is, this should carry some serious power.
And indeed, both of them step back just a little.

"A brand?"

"But I haven't seen any new brandings for years!"

"So you know what this means? Then you know what kind of person I am. So you know I don't have to answer your questions. Now I'm going to borrow you both, by royal decree. Take me to the palace."

"Excuse me?"
The woman steps forward.
"You can't just take-"

Actually you can. You pop your Snake Dispel the moment you pull it out of your pack, engulfing both in the resulting smoke cloud.

"He's got a dispel! Run!"

Needless to say, you don't let them get away. Your wooden arm snaps out into a proper branch, one that you swing across the alleyway to smack both into the wall. As you do so, the Dispel takes effect and returns them to their true forms.

Two small snakes plop onto the alleyway and you pick both of them up and lock them into your pack. By long familiarity, you feel the wish-bond lock into place.

You sit around for a few minutes before you take one of the snakes out of your pack and let them retake human form. It's the girl, her suit untarnished by her struggle.

She reaches for you immediately and then stops, her eyes widening with horror. She pulls something out of her pocket but you move quicker, snatching it out of her Artless hand. It's a little metal whistle of some kind. Huh.

"You won't get away with this just because you took my capture-whistle," she huffs. "Do you even know how illegal this is? I highly doubt that you are a licensed Snakecatcher and even if you were, the two of us have done nothing wrong! You'll be strung up for this!"

It occurs to you that she might just yell for help the moment you leave the alleyway.
"I wish you'd only talk when spoken to."

Her tirade is cut off mid-sentence and her face rapidly grows red with suppressed frustration and humiliation.

"Take me to the palace please. And if you try anything funny, remember that I still have your comrade in my pack."

She scowls and then grabs your land, leading you out of the alleyway and back onto the street.
It's a strange new world but at least it looks like you've landed rightside up.

Looking about this strange new world, you’re think you’re starting to get an idea about what’s going on. This is the future! Or at least, the future Naja has decided to give you. A future where Naja wins? A future where Hiss wins but you aren’t there to reign her back? You’re not sure and frankly, you don’t really want to know. It probably doesn’t matter. This is all just her creation, it could mean anything.

But that doesn’t mean you aren’t curious.
“What the hell was all that just there?”

“What?”

“What with showing me the symbol and all that. The curfew.”

“We were attempting to arrest you. We’re just members of the Public Guard, I swear we didn’t know-”

“Arrest me for what?”

She looks at you as if you’d grown a second head.
“Breaking the human curfew. And being in a high-class area while you did it! Unless you have received special royal dispensation from her Majesty or an official authorized-”

You interrupt her yet again, the wish forcing her mouth shut in response.
“Right. Uhuh. But why the human curfew? Does your Queen truly hate humans that much?”

“Are you really one of her branded?”

“Pardon?”

“You’re bringing racial rhetoric into this all of a sudden. This is why people don’t like humans you know. Every bad thing that happens is because of ‘oppression, because of an ‘anti-human agenda’ in the government. You think I haven’t read those conspiracy rags you people pass among themselves? All citizens of Teleran, human or snake, are equal before her Majesty and your perpetual insistence that life is unfair because we’re born with magic and you aren’t is…. Well, it’s very human of you.”

“You literally have a human curfew!”

“You’re not from around here, are you? Which country do you belong to? Did you really think that a fake brand is going to be enough to let you pass?”

“Just tell me about the curfew.”

“Eugh. It’s for these humans own good. Do you even know how many crimes we have to deal with everyday? Now guess how much of that crime is related to humans. Damn near all of it! And I must say, you’re not really doing anything to help the stereotype. Breaking the curfew, harassing an officer of her Majesty’s law and enslaving me? When they find you, they’re going to skip reeducation entirely and go straight for execution. I hope you like spending the rest of eternity in a soul gullet.”

“You said something about a Snakecatcher license?”

She just huffs.
“Don’t you know what that is?”

“Indulge me.”

“They are humans in her Majesty’s royal service, a select few with her own personal seal of approval and training. But even they need to have their target authorized beforehand."
1/2
>>
>>432520
"So now do you realize how much trouble you’re in? You’ll be better off letting me go, if I attest that I was treated well maybe you’ll get away with just a little reeducation.”

Yeah, you’re not sure how you feel about snakes messing with human minds apparently becoming a widespread state practice.
“This Queen of yours sounds like a real piece of work.”

She stops for a moment, balling her fists in futile rage. But she just closes her eyes and says nothing.

“Let me guess, her name is Hiss?”

“Hrmph. So you’re not completely ignorant. Are you from Ra Vene? No, even they’re smarter than this. But yes, Queen Hiss rules. She’s ruled for decades. You got that right at least.”

“I figured it was her, your fashion sense isn’t particularly original.”

“What do you know about fashion? You’re a human, you can’t even change shap-”

“Sssh. Be quiet for a bit now.”
You let her lead you down the street, watching another of those gleaming alchemical engine-carts pass you by as you do so.
“What kind of alchemy do you use to power that thing?”

Her face lights up.
“So you’re here for our alchemy, huh? Well you’re flat out of luck pal, I don’t know anything about it! But I will tell you something. Our alchemists are model human beings, living by the Consort’s example! To get licensed they have to be loyal thrice over. You can’t subvert them. Oh and speaking of…”

The two of you round a corner, putting you right in front of Taldenral’s old Potion College. Looks like it’s called the Royal Alchemy Academy now. It’s a bit different from how you remember it, ancient scorch marks running up down the side of the main building and the courtyard.
In front of the Academy stands a large statue of a man in traveller’s clothes, lugging a large pack full of alchemical equipment behind him. You can’t quite see who it’ honoring however, the face has been chipped and broken off.
Red paint has been splashed over the plaque beneath, masking the name with a simple TRAITOR.

Your captive shivers in disgust.
“You see why the curfew is needed? Common humans see our alchemists, humans who actually work within the system and advance upon their own merits, and attack them for it.But to go so far...who could loathe Cennen? THE Cennen? He’s basically the ideal human! I better report the broken st-oh. Nevermind.”
She remembers halfway through her spiel that she’s your prisoner. She won’t be reporting anything.

You’re not sure how you feel about any of this.
“Do you have a name?”

“Of course. It’s-”

“Nah actually you’re called…”

"Your new name is Moody. Seems to sum you up pretty well."

"That's not my name."

"Isn't it?"
You know what? Fuck it. This world doesn't matter anyway.
"I wish that for the next century you would only refer to yourself as Moody and insist that everyone else call you that."

"What?," cries Moody.

"Anyway, what were you saying about your name?"

"My name's Moody!"
She covers her own mouth in horror before slowly sighing, apparently having resigned herself to this life already.

"How old are you anyway, Moody? Did you see the war?"

"No. I'm twenty-two years old."

"That explains a lot. Is the Consort still alive?"

"All you do is ask questions! What does that have to do with the previous one?"

"Is he?"

Moody sighs yet again, the motion already becoming reflexive for her.
"...Yes. He lives in the palace. We were heading towards that anyway."

She walks you down the road towards the remodelled palace. It's a lot...blacker than you remember it. And is this area in front of it new? You remember there being streets and-
The square in front of the palace isn't man-made. It's an immense hand-print and it has to be a hundred feet long. They've just paved over it!

Moody sniggers at you reaction.
"Yeah, you're definately foreign. This is the Queen's power. This is what you're throwing yourself up against."

You don't know what she's so smug about, you don't even need her anymore.

>"I've been up against your Queen every night."

The two of you walk closer towards the 'square', Moody still riding high off what she can only assume is you being rattled by such an obvious display of power.

Enough of that.
"I throw myself against your Queen every night."

"Excuse me??"

"You heard me. And she likes it too. She begs for it. She-"

You don't get any further before Moody punches you in the face.

It's not a very hard strike, the wish-bond holding her back until it hits about as hard as a child's fist. But the sound of it still echoes through the night.
Your wish prevents her from saying anything so instead she just spits in your mouth and steps back.

You cough, trying to hack it up. Gross.
"What the fuck are you trying to do?"

Moody just smiles.
"You might as well just give it up now. Do you know how much venom I've just given you?"

"Let me guess, a lethal dose?"

Moody looks a little embarrassed.
"That's uh, not how my venom works. It's not designed for fighting. But it should render you unable to do anything anyway."

"Right. When does it kick in?"
You're completely immune of course. Got Hiss to thank for that.

The seconds tick by and Moody starts to look visibly distressed.
"A-Are you starting to feel a bit warmer?"

"Nope."

"HUMAN DETECTED."
The two of you are interrupted by a ...a thing. A long eight-legged lizard drops from the wall beside you, its skin altering colours to camouflage it. How long has it been there? What the fuck is it? A spirit?

It's not until you look into its blank black eyes that you realise that it's a homunculus.

A long orange tongue flickers out and brushes against your arm and you pull back out of reflex.
"What do you want?"
Silly question. It's here to guard the palace obviously. How many of these are there?

And then the lizard shakes its head.
"You taste like maker but you are not. Anomalous. Please come with me."

You spot more lizards appearing all around you. You have the feeling it's not a request.
