Good, ElvesIslands locked. I began drawing a map like 10 minutes ago, and I'll start writing in a bit. Since I'm not sure of a good beginning for Elves, I'll play this one a little more 'traditional' civbuilder-wise, with a little bit less character interaction than what I'm used to, and a little bit more stats and civ decisions (so time will pass faster ingame than it did in my previous thread. If you disagree please say so)

You are Thrandir, fourth son of Thirandulmyr. Lord of the ancient elven people. You had previously begun a rebellion, which caused many lives to perish. And though your crimes were grave, your father had great mercy on you, and sent you off. You and your more than eighty most loyal followers were sent on a boat made of ancient white elvenwood, and were then sent through an ancient teleportation portal. Your father’s words as he sent you and your men off were “If you desire to rule so much, rule over these people, wherever this may lead you”. As you and your followers were sent through the portal your vision went blank.

You awaken at a sandy white beach, your ship’s structure damaged by the warping powers of teleportation, but still usable. And if one of your people manages to advance their nature magic, they could of course merge it with an existing tree to create their own elvenwood tree. Ahead of you is a forest with palm trees, and behind you is an ocean of deep blue waters.

>>
>>419811
First, we check that everyone on the boat got through the portal alright.

Then we check that the boat is securely on the beach and has no chance of being swept out to sea at high tide.

If everyone and the boat are fine, then we send a party of eight men to scout along the beach in one direction and another eight-man team to scout in the other direction, looking for streams or rivers.

In the meantime, we and our party make shelter whilst eight men stand guard.

You. I like you. Prewriting and changing the map that I was going to give you for accuracy. Just saying that you currently don't have tools though. So the best shelter you guys can currently make is sticks and leaves... Or to turn your boat upside-down.

Your first order of business is to check if everyone is alright. You notice that although the boat is slightly warped, everyone riding it is fine, protected by the ancient magic of the elvenwood. They aren’t in the best of spirits due to their exile, but other than that they seem happy.

With that taken care of, you and your people step ashore, the gnashing of the white sand can be heard under your feet. You order your people to secure the boat, bringing it securely on the shore so it doesn’t suddenly get swept away by high tide. You and your people even dig a shallow hole for it to rest in so it is secured by the sand as well as its own weight. All together this takes less than ten minutes with all the manpower you have available.

Your boat in place it is time to get a better idea of your surroundings. You send two teams of eight people off; one in each direction of the shoreline. With them gone you order the rest of your people to begin building shelters. At your disposal you currently see the palm trees and their leaves, and several types of bushes. Your people move in teams of eight, and while some cautiously enter the very first area of the forest, the other groups scavenge the beach for possible resources to use.

Your people spend hours gathering resources, and after many hours of hard work, something your people aren’t used to, they manage to construct several basic shelters made from fallen wood, leaves and bark. Though some of the groups decided to instead search for sharpened rocks to attempt to make some basic stone axes, which you now have available to use.

Those who made axes begin chopping down thinner trees near the border of the forest, but this takes long, and by the time the sun begins to set your scouts finally return, claiming to not even have met each other yet at the end of their journey. Meanwhile some of your kind have figured out what the cardinal directions are, and from them your scouts have told you their info. The scouts which you sent east found a single stream just over four hours walking from your current location, the beach soon turned to follow south rather than east though. Those you sent west continued that way quite far, but they claimed to have probably not gone that far, as they had to pass through a shallow piece of forest, and would like stay safe. On their way they had seen many different types of wildlife, most of which birds, rush in and out of the forests, making it seem like a lively place.

>Status update next post
>>
>>419883
But are you going to have people sit in the sun sharpening rocks? Our tribe should at least go under the palm trees by the treeline if they're going to be working. And it probably won't be easy to find rocks of the right size on a sand beach.

Hearing the news of freshwater, you immediately decide that migrating there would definitely be the best option, and order your people to collect their belongings so they can move towards the stream.

Soon after they begin collecting, you and a second group begin to recover the elvenwood boat, with the decision that it would be far easier to travel using it. Its special property is after all that it moves according to the will of the one it is bound to… to a limit of course.

Travel by ship is of course much faster than walking over the shoreline, and rather than taking nearly six hours like the scouts did, you only take four. And during this time most of the people could rest while you simply push your will upon the boat.

You arrive at the stream and once more land the boat, the fresh water glistering in the late evening sun and the sound of small fish trying to swim upstream apparent to whoever would be looking at it for several minutes. Your people look at the first scouting group and question them about if this water is drinkable, and they claim to have already drunk from it, and if they would become sick, they would have become so already. Your people quickly make their way to it and drink to their hearts content, before placing themselves down, satisfied of their thirst, but both somewhat sleepy and hungry.

Though your people voice that they are tired, you urge them to make a fire. A fire large enough to be a bonfire. They complain left and right but do as they are told. They first split up in several groups of three to five to collect dry wood and other necessities to make fire. The dark makes collecting difficult but in half an hour you can see several groups attempting to make fire, while others are looking for more and bigger pieces of wood. After another half an hour and several failed attempts at keeping a fire going there is some success. A few of the elves working on the fire continue to complain about sore hands, but the fire is lit.

The most tired people are gathered around the main fire, and those who were previously busy attempting to make fire go back to collecting wood. Stories are told and you yourself begin a tale of the glories to come, starting somewhere at the growth of a new elvenwood tree, and ending at cities numbering hundreds of thousands of elves, all working together while well fed and happy. After finishing it you order your people to take turns in taking watch, always going in groups. You yourself take first watch along with several others, to be an example to others, and throughout the early night you chat happily as you set up and refuel the smaller surrounding campfires intended to keep animals at bay.

During your watch you encountered nothing, but others supposedly saw shadows moving in the distance, and because of that only what is left of the bonfire is still alight as the story had become more of a horror tale during the nightly watch, and the last two groups of the night watch were too afraid to look for more firewood.

Some of your people found a handful of shellfish in the morning, and because of their hunger decided to eat them without telling. One got sick which is why the word got out. In the direct surroundings no more shellfish can be found.

Collect food and trappers, possibly make fishing spears.

Your stomach begins groaning while you get up, and as such you send an order to those who claim to be able to lay traps for small creatures. You also order those who aren’t able to do this to begin either collecting fruits, nuts or other small foodstuffs, or to make fishing spears if they can find the materials to do so.

Three come forward who claim to be able to lay traps, and just about all others begin looking for berries. You once again remind them to stay in groups for safety. A few others group up with the stone axes and attempt to make more tools.

An hour and a half later the first trappers return to take a break, bringing sticks to fuel the fire. They take a drink and report that they have left several traps, before returning to lay some more. Another hour later the gatherers return each now wearing a little less clothing, with baglike objects made from pieces of what they had, each filled with several types of berries, sprouts and roots. A few of the elves had snacked from what they collected and while most were fine, one or two were experiencing stomach-aches, and separated the berries they had eaten, but have brought them anyway

Those who went to craft came to report in as they saw the gatherers, and they have made two more stone axes, and a single fishing spear, and they claim to be able to make more with a few more hours of effort, as they now know how to.

With the food collected the immediate hunger is sated, but no one was even near to full yet. As such you ordered everyone to continue their activities. One elf who bore a physique clearly built for endurance took the fishing spear and headed for the stream, all the others returned to what they did previously.

Three hours passed and everyone returned; the gatherers with equal amounts of berries, the trappers with news of more laid traps, and fisherman who had several tiny fish, and two larger fish the size of a lower arm, which were immediately decided to be the main meal of the day.

The crafters returned with three new stone axes and all of them slightly more sharpened than before. Additionally they made four more fishing spears as they now have a rather good idea of how to.

The elves with stomach-aches have settled down, but they still don’t feel completely fine. And the gatherers say that they don’t expect more food in the immediate area.

Sounds fine to me.
>>
You send your craftsmen out to make more spears, and order them to try and make bows. Sadly none of the people you’ve brought is a tree-singer, but your craftsmen claim to be able to do their job. The rest of the people are sent out with the orders to build housing, and only a few who were tired remain who you quickly order to check if the non-edible berries can be used as paint.

The non-edible berries are green black and white, and while the white one gives those who put it on their skin red marks after it begins to itch slightly, the black can be used for painting. The green berries don’t leave color, but instead remain sticky and uncomfortable; perhaps they are simply not ripe yet, you don’t know.

The gatherers and the trappers work together to cut down trees and make basic frames, the gatherers mostly collect while the trappers mostly build, while they use leaves and bark as binding to tie things together. It’s crude, but not as crude as what you had earlier. After an hour three frames are standing, and after another the first house is done with two more on the way, and two more frames constructed. After the third hour five homes have been constructed and materials for another two have been collected. These “Beach huts” as they’ve been called also include beds made out of bark and leaves, and while some wind passes through they are much better than sleeping outside.

Seeing that the builders are just about done, the craftsmen also come to you; they have made another five fishing spears, and a surprising amount of firewood. They however proudly present to you personally, a very crude bow, complete with arrows. They say that the wood from the nearby trees and bushes is nearly completely unsuited, and they are too afraid to go deeper before it has been explored. String has been woven from fibers from tree bark, and both you and the craftsmen expect the rope used to only last ten shots at the most.

Tonight another bonfire is erected, and some of your people once more tell stories of what they hope to see the next day. Some of the gatherers continue building, finishing the last two beach huts by nightfall. Everyone heads to sleep relatively early, and night watch is once more kept.

This night the guards are armed with fishing spears, and whatever appeared last night tries to come closer this night. One of the guards reports an “Almost round creature making grumbling noises” which allegedly came up to his hip if not higher. Your scouts haven’t encountered it before, so it seems to either be attracted to the fire, or nocturnal.

Early this morning, just before sunrise a certain group of elves claim to have felt a heavy disturbance of the mana in the surroundings. Their claim is somewhat valid as they have spent years at the magical academies of your homeland, though were kicked out due to making no progress at actual spellcasting. They claim to have knowledge regarding magic and wish to be elevated to a position similar to yours upon sharing it.

A pallisade around the camp.

We refuse to elevate the magic-sensers to our position, or to elevate them above anyone else in the tribe, whilst of course making it clear that we value their help in helping to protect the community.
>>
>>421481
How large do you want the palisade, and should I make a super-local map? Also do note that you don't have many axes yet, and to complete a palisade you'll need loads of wood, which is still relatively hard to come by, and it'll take multiple days to complete.
>>
>>421502
I'd like to build it on the side where the shadows and the creature were spotted. And some stable guard towers for all the guards on that side so that they can look over the pallisade.

Not to order you around, but I think that this would be a good place to end the session for tonight. After all, it is "European Daytime Civ".
>>
>>421568
Good call, I'll probably head off soon yeah. I'm mostly reading right now after all.
>>
>>421414
I think the paliside is foolhardy, when we don't even yet have food stored against hardship. Winter and hunger are inevitable foes, while dangerous beasts or savages are uncertain.

Besides, even if they do come, we are fresh from war! Exalted bloodshed on the open ground, fury and skill, fang and steel, I would welcome it.

And the little magelings want power? Hah! Seize it if you can, if you master the power to make the thunder strike on your command, or fire spark from your fingertips. Power will command respect and servitude, but only if you have true power.
>>
>>421414
Also, what elevated position could you wish to aspire to? Lords of the mud hovels and the palm shades?

Learn to gather up stone from sand, or sing the saplings to your tune, and perhaps you will have something to be lord of. Or better yet, lure beasts and birds to our dinner plates, and be not nobles of grumbling bellies.

I think you guys are focusing way too hard on food. You can easily go 3 days whilst conducting moderate labour without food, and if you need to 5 days doing hard labour. Yes, after that you're pretty boned but water & shelter are faaaar more important.

a phrase I remember, 3hours in adverse weather without shelter, 3 days without water. 3 weeks without food. (how long you can last)
>>
>>423036
We ideally want to get some food by the end of the day, though. It can't be too hard to catch some crayfish in the stream or fish in the ocean with nets.
>>
>>422800
how dense are the woods? if there's a slight chance scouts will get lost, we should stick to scouting upstream and the coast
>>
>>423036

You can survive 3 weeks without food if you are aiming to survive long enough to reach civilization or be rescued.

We are not hoping for either of those things. We've got to recreate civilization. If we ever got to the three week hunger point, as a budding civilization, we're dead as a civilization.

That said, by all means, lets get some shelter. Rain is not something you can pick a fight with. But palisades are a pointless extravagance.
>>
>>423234
OP where are you yes we do need more shelter
>>
You guys are right; my pallisade idea was a poor use of time and resources at this point. Let's make shelter instead, but we should make some quick and easy sharpened sticks as well to use as weapons to defend ourselves from any attackers. That's got to be much quicker and easier than when we sharpened those stone axes; we should be able to make them on the same turn as making shelter.
>>
>>423319
a load of huts were already build, shouldn't waste time on this either, if it is enough. scouting needs to be done though.

Im just saying its the lowest of priorities.

Personally i'd go.
1. Water source
2. Shelter near water
3a. Means of collecting/storing/purifying water
3b. Fire
4. Food
5. Tools
Start reinforcing/improving the above.
>>
>>425893
We're settled near a freshwater river, and are building shelter.

1 and 2 are either done or in progress, 3b is done, we know how to make fire.

I would say a method of storing/preserving food is just as important as storing/purifying water.
