You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

"This establishment is very…" Agda hesitates for a moment, looking for the right word. "Cozy is the word, I think."

"It's my first time coming here," you say, "but it does seem quite nice at first glance."

The first course - thin grilled slices of different fish, each prepared in a particular manner - has been served, and your guests are all enjoying it as far as you can tell.

Archduchess Aleksandra is sitting right across from you at the table's southern point. Princess Agda and her sister Laila are to the East, while Princess Reagan is to the West. Olwen and her vassal, Mererid auk Hirbraich, are sitting between you and Princess Reagan, while prospective Baroness Ceri auk Haearnty and Seren auk Caunys are between you and Princess Agda, and Rhonwen auk Cysgod is between Princess Reagan and the Archduchess.

It is a very big table. Even so, you wonder if it isn't big enough. This isn't your first group date, but your mother isn't here to salvage things if you put your foot in your mouth, and there's no rehearsal to draw attention away from you.

You think about what the ladies have in common. Agda, Laila, Ceri and Seren are all involved in mercantile affairs to a certain extent, while Aleksandra, Mererid and Olwen are more interested in the military. Rhonwen, Seren and Mererid are also all involved with the arcane sciences to a certain extent, but that's not something the princesses know about. Princess Reagan is the odd one out as far as interests go, but you're quite certain she can insert herself into just about any conversation if she feels like it.

Social interaction is so much more difficult when you're not lying to people and telling them what they want to hear. Sure, you could go with that approach, but then you'd end up with a useless trophy consort and you don't have enough free time to waste it like that. You'll just have to come up with something to talk about, no matter how lame it is.

This is supposed to be a party. You could talk about business, but getting to know these women in a more personal level is important as well, and you already know most of what they do for a living anyway.

No, you'd rather keep this informal for the moment and set the conversation along a more casual topic.

"Have you been enjoying the wedding celebrations?"

"Oh, of course," Princess Agda answers first. "I'm quite glad I had to reason to come and visit Aurwain, and the festivities make it quite exciting. Laila and I have been enjoying ourselves quite a bit."

"I've had the chance to meet with some of my family's old contacts," Ceri says. "No matter how much they wanted to avoid House Haernty in the past, they can't avoid the Crown Prince's celebrations. It's been quite productive."

Ceri has a bit of a grin on her face; you suspect quite a few nobles agreed to some bad deals just to get her out of their hair and save face. You can't really blame them or her. After all, it's all just business.

"It was much the same as my last visit, to be honest," Seren says. "Then again, I mostly visit the capital for balls and such. It does feel a little long though."

"I agree," Aleksandra says. "As much as I appreciate ceremony, I feel that things have been dragging on for some time now."

"It is getting a little tiresome," Rhonwen agrees. "My family insists I remain here until it's all over, but I would like to get back to work soon."

Keeping it casual has been working for you so far, so why not keep going? It feels a little strange, but it helps that your audience is receptive.

"People need to enjoy themselves while they can," you say. "Between the wars, famines and every other thing that can go wrong with a kingdom, it's rare that we can take a few weeks off to do nothing but celebrate. I assume it's much the same for everyone here."

"I suppose it is nice to get away from the… difficulties I had to deal with in Rosea," Aleksandra says, "and since the situation is stable, I'm not really needed at the moment."

There are nods of assent across the table. Reagan seems particularly pleased to be away from Olstren, while Agda is more concerned; it's understandable, given their respective positions. Reagan is safer away from home, but Agda is needed for whatever her family is negotiating.

"Oh, I haven't put war completely out of my mind, your highness," Mererid says. "After all, it's best to prepare for war during times of peace, when there are no shortages of supplies and no urgency to it."

The second course arrives, and the conversation goes quiet until the servants are done. Careless people don't notice the help, but there are spies everywhere and some things shouldn't be discussed in public. It's nice to see you're spending your evening with professionals.

The conversation resumes once the servants leave.

"War does make my work more difficult," Rhonwen says, "but I don't really need it as a motivation. I like to think that my work has other applications."

"The difference between war and peace isn't as important as most people make it out to be," Ceri says. "It's just a question of looking for the right opportunities."

"I do enjoy the food stands," Seren says. "They're cheap, but the diversity is quite impressive. Traditional fish dishes are harder to come by in the North."

"I'm surprised so many chefs were able to prepare food preserves," Rhonwen says. "It takes weeks or even months to get them right."

"The wedding preparations started quite some time ago," you say. "I wanted to be certain the usual fare would be available."

The conversation about food is redundant seeing as how you're in a restaurant, but it does stimulate the appetite, and that's a net gain for your enjoyment of the meal. Eventually, the conversation turns towards other petty topics. It's quite relaxing, if you're honest with yourself.

"The balls are a little too feeble for my tastes," Aleksandra says. "Rosean dances tend to me more energetic."

"That's because they're more elaborate than they need to be," Reagan says. "There's a reason why folk dances are more popular in Olstren, even among the nobility."

"Having tried both a little, I'd say they're quite different," Ceri says. "Elaborate dances are more intimate, but folk dances tend to be more social. It's quite interesting."

Ah, yes. Dancing. That thing you ended up being absurdly good at through various circumstances in spite of your relatively limited training. Still, if it gives you something to say…

"In my experience, which type of dance is best depends on one's partner," you say. "I've had partners who were quite relaxed, and others who were more energetic."

"Based on personal experience," Olwen says, "you're equally adept at dealing with both, your highness.

Aleksandra smirks and Reagan licks her lips suggestively, but it doesn't look like anyone else caught on to Olwen's implications.

The rest of the evening goes along the same pace. Ceri shares a few stories about how her family business is doing now that she has a family business again, and Olwen and Mererid talk a little about their childhood and the work they had to put into earning their inheritance. Seren talks a bit with Princess Reagan since their territories are geographically close, but the frustration in Reagan's voice is obvious; despite being a princess, there's little she can actually.

Desert comes along and the evening starts to wrap up.

"We might find the time before we return home," Archduchess Aleksandra says.

"I expect we'll be together at the Crown Prince's actual wedding banquet, in any case," Princess Reagan says. "Besides, some of us will be able to remain in Aurwain once everything's over." She gives you a wink, which is all you needed to confirm that she's not just talking about having a friendly dinner.

The ladies return to the palace or their homes in carriages. Myrddin comes to pick you and Olwen up in the last one; you have some business to take care of.

"I don't know if I should be annoyed or impressed," Olwen says. "Couldn't this have waited until after we returned to the palace, Myrddin? At least so I could change into something more practical."

"It's a busy time for all of us," Myrddin says, "and while I still don't consider this urgent, it still needs to be dealt with."

"Is this about the spy?" You ask. "Has he taken the bait already?"

"As an educated guess," Myrddin says, "he's interested in you, particularly anything to do with the more scandalous aspects of your life."

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow. "I would have expected him to be interested in Princess Agda."

Myrddin shrugs. "I don't think I'm wrong about this one," he says. "All signs suggest the spy's interested in you."

"That seems a bit pointless, to be honest," Olwen says. "Besides, his highness has been spending time with more than a dozen different women. People must know something is up by now."

"You'd be surprised," Myrddin says. "At the moment, everyone is focused on the Crown Prince. There isn't much interest in Prince Meirion's love life."

As Myrddin said, this matter isn't urgent. Your uncle can't do anything against your potential lovers at the moment, and it'll be common knowledge in a few days, a week at the most. Still, it might be worth disposing of the spy just to spite your uncle. He shouldn't have much protection.

"I'll have a chat with that spy personally," you say. "Let's go get changed."

You stop by the palace long enough to change into shabbier clothes and pick up your weapon. You add some powdered dye to your hair to make yourself harder to recognize. It won't fool anyone for long, but it'll give you time to corner the spy.

Afterwards, Myrddin picks you and Olwen up in a different carriage and brings you to a tavern. You can hear the singing and merriment from the outside. You carefully move next to the windows and peer inside.

"The spy's there." Myrddin points to a middle-aged man chatting amicably with other men by the bar. "The one who's drinking watered-down beer."

When pretending to drink, watered-down drinks are the best option. Just nursing the pint and faking sips will draw attention eventually; drunks are supposed to request new drinks regularly.

The spy finishes his beer and orders another one. You and Olwen slip inside the tavern to continue your observation, and Myrddin comes in after you. You'd look highly suspicious if you spent your whole evening standing outside the bar, and it is getting a little cold. You order a round of hot drinks and wait.

The spy continues to drink a little bit at a time. Over time, his posture slackens and his words start to slur. When he finishes his pint, you don't give him a chance to start another one; you don't want him to be too drunk for what comes next. You share a nod with Myrddin and stand up.

"There you are!" You grab the spy by the shoulder and pull him back. "Your mistress is looking for you. Figured you didn't want her meeting your wife."

The spy struggles a little, but he's too drunk to do much. You and Myrddin drag him out of the tavern without anyone really caring.

"I want him sober."

He'd be more likely to want to answer your question if he's drunk, but there's no point if he's completely incoherent and doesn't remember anything he knows.

Myrddin takes a small pill from the folds of his robes and shoves it into the spy's mouth. The spy gags and groans, but his eyes quickly clear up and he turns his head to look at you.

"Who… who are you?"

"We're people who like to listen," you say. "This time, we happened to listen to someone who's been asking too many questions about things that don't concern him. So why don't you tell us about your current job?"

God, trying to politic against this guy must be a fucking nightmare.

>hire a spy to try and fish out some rumors about him
>he shows up in person, kidnaps your spy and interrogates him himself
>hire an assassin to off one of the girls he's mildly interested in
>he disguises himself and arranges so he can personally prevent it and slaughters your assassin
>hire a courier to just send your goddamn mail
>he busts into the guy's house and sends him packing to the next country

Jesus christ dude calm down.

Man I really liked that vampire, too. I was all geared up for him to be my favorite character and he didn't even last one thread.
I'm still mad.

"Ah, shit…" The spy's head droops. "Okay, look, I didn't mean to move in on your turf, all right? I don't even know anything you couldn't pick up from the local rumours. Can you please just let me go?"

"That's not what I want to hear about," you say. "Your job."

The spy sighs. "My fixer told me someone wanted information about the second Prince's love life," he says. "Something that could be used to discredit him and weaken his reputation with the nobles and the military. Make it look like his head isn't in the game anymore. I swear, that's all I know."

You have to admit, it's not a bad plan. With the recent changes to military assignments, it might make some nobles more belligerent or increase the number of bandits on the roads. It's also something that doesn't require a lot of spies or pre-existing infrastructure, so your uncle will be able to follow through with it no matter what happens unless you keep all your lovers secret, which would defeat the purpose of choosing women who can work with you.

You'll need to come up with a counter-measure once you've dealt with the spy.

>[Military/Autosuccess] Execute him. He's useless to you now.
>[Intrigue/Autosuccess] Run him out of town permanently. He's not worth the hassle of having a body to dispose of.

can we make him work for us?

Hey QM considering how balanced our party is in Relic Quest would we have gotten different companiosn based on our relic choice?
>>
>>426212
Do we really need anything more than Myrddin?
I mean, has he ever fucked up, even once?
>>
>>426212
Kind of. Myrddin can (and probably has) send jobs to his fixer, but anything more direct can be traced back to you.
>>
>>426217
more so we can fuck with unlce intel
but Myrddin is by fare the best ever
well >>426219
then cant be having that now can we
>>
>>426216
The companions were all pre-generated, but Fragarach and Aegis had their own niche anyway. The Bow of Herakles would have gotten you the "I needed one more person on my squad, and you were the only person who happened to be available" treatment since it would have been mostly redundant with the Silver Bow.

hmmm then im happy we picked the riben
so when we going to use it for lawds?
>>
>>426221
>>426219
Oh yeah, that is an idea.
We could use him to feed Uncle misinformation.
QM, is that a possibility?
>>
>>426236
I would like this idea, though it'd work out best if we had a good fake love interest too. (Does uncle have some horrible daughter we could be fake interested in?)
>>
>>426201
"I don't feel like disposing of your body," you say, "so I'm going to let you go. Just make sure this never happens again. Understand?"

"Yeah, yeah, I know how this works." The spy grumbles, but lets himself get manhandled my Myrddin and Olwen. They remove his bindings and throw him out of the cellar.

"This sounds like an easy problem to deal with," Olwen says. "It's not like people don't expect you to have two or three women on the side."

"Still, I can't appear weak," you say. "I'll need to find someone to make an example out of."

"Olstren would be a good choice, depending on how things go with Princess Reagan," Myrddin says, "and Archduchess Aleksandra's presence alone would be enough to quell those rumours."

"Thank you, Myrddin," you say. "I'll be sure to keep all possibilities in mind and to wait until everything is set in stone before deciding how to deal with this. Now, stop trying to set me up."

"I will make no such promises until a nursery filled with little princes."

Even Olwen's eyebrow twitches at that remark. You decide to just ignore Myrddin's ramblings and climb out of the cellar. Now that your uncle's plots have all been dealt with one way or the other, you might be able to sleep in tomorrow morning.

That's.... a very bad idea. Too many ways it could backfire horribly.

That's it for today. Next thread of Beleaguered Prince Quest will be Friday August 5th at 7PM EDT. It's finally time for the Crown Prince's wedding.

As a reminder, I'll also be running Relic Quest this Sunday at 7PM EDT. As usual, you can follow me on Twitter @BeleagueredQM for announcements and updates.

Until next time, goodnight and thanks for playing.

>>426242
That'd be like going full Zabi and full Habsburg at the same time.
>>
>>426258
Thanks for running.
