Light slowly trickles into your vision as you finally reawaken, to your relief, in the back of the Soviet halftrack instead of a Hexenkraft one. Or worse. You rub your head as your rise blearily, it feels like someone smashed your own hammer into your face; your eyes aren’t faring any better, pain shoots through them thanks to that ghost’s attempt to burrow into your head. Or at least you think that what she tried to do. You don’t feel that different, maybe the creepy ghost magic hasn’t kicked in just yet? She’s stayed quiet while you slept, and hasn’t made herself known to you since you put on that necklace. You try calling out, half expecting her to respond.

“Hello? Anyone there?”

The only thing that answers you is the rumbling of the halftrack’s engine and the howling of the desert winds outside. Figures, what were you expecting. It still feels like your eyes are trying to rip themselves clean of your sockets. You grind your teeth as you muscle through the pain. The necklace hasn’t left its perch upon your neck, the central gem’s glowing has subsided to a dull, barely noticeable hue. The thing does look rather good on you and if it wasn’t haunted, you’d be happy to keep it. Diane and Erika come into the half track as they hear you speak to no one. Probably to make sure that you haven’t lost your marbles after your ordeal in the Mausoleum. Diane gives you a soft smile as the two girls flank you. Erika’s attempt to look soothing

“You’re awake. How are you feeling? Do you remember your name?” They must think that ghost really screwed you up if they’re asking those kinds of questions. You open your mouth to respond, but no words come out. The memories of what you assume is Diane’s future come rushing back to your mind, the deathly pallor of her face as blood liberally soaks the sands beneath her lifeless body. Two, gaping puncture wounds adorning her neck, teeth marks on the other side of it. A stark contrast to the living, breathing girl sitting next to you now. For the first time in a very long time, you feel like crying.

“I’m fine, don’t worry about it.” Diane sits you back down as you attempt to leave, hand firmly pushing on your shoulder.

“Take a break, mon ami. The Soviets are clearing the Mausoleum. They haven’t found anything just yet, but they said that they will be in touch with us if they need help. We should go home, rest up, yes?”

[x] Sounds good, you're not sure if your fit to fight right now

You lightly push Diane’s hand off of your shoulder. She yields quickly, and follows you closely as you step out of the halftrack. While the prospect of going home and resting sure is enticing, you’d rather keep Hexenkraft on their toes. Letting them go about their business with impunity doesn’t sit right with you. You give Diane a determined look as you steady yourself and

“We’re so close to getting them out of Egypt, I’m not gonna give up now.” You take your team back into the catacombs of the Mausoleum. Empty shell casings line the floor, they look like rifle bullets. You pick one up, Cyrillic. You figure that following these would lead you right to your Soviet compatriots, and having seven combatants is better than four. The shell casings lead you down hall after hall after hall. Looks like they made a whole lot of progress while you were out. It looks like the Hexenkraft have been busy as well. Each of the rooms that you pass has had their sarcophagi’s blown open, some of the bodies have been undisturbed, but other have signs of having been killed in combat. However, all of these defiled coffins have one thing in common. The necklaces around their occupants are missing.

If what the Soviets told you was true, then they’ve been busy looting these graves for their spiritstones. Will they actually give the Hexenkraft soldiers magical powers? Will they be able to use them to bring Babylonian magicians to aid them? You can only hope not. Even putting it on seems to have some effect on you, you hope it’ll be worse for a layperson.

“So these necklace things really are possessed by ghosts? Wonder what would have happened if I broke mine.” Josie asks idly. Nothing good, you’d imagine.

Eventually, you do meet up with the Soviets, hiding behind some pillars. In the room in front of you is the Nazi officer you’ve become so familiar with. This is the first time you’ve seen him up close, and you notice his complex looking cybernetic arm. Necklaces are arranged on a table before him, and he’s surrounded by other Hexenkraft soldiers. The necklaces glow and thrum with power.

“Looks like we hit the jackpot.” Major Adamska whispers, as he hugs Cossack tightly to keep her from charging in there.

Looks like it.

You aren’t looking forward to see what happens when they get those necklaces around their necks. It looks like Erika has the same idea and she fires a single HE shell into their ranks. It has predictably devastating effects, and the Hexengrenadiers are thrown into complete disarray with a single strike. The officer yells for order, which would have been successful had Cossack not joined the fray. She notices the sparkling of the crystal, and a devious smile spreads across her face. She lifts a hand in the air, and all of a sudden many of the necklaces race towards her hand by their crystals.

“Haha! Foiled again by me!” The Hexengrenadiers are too busy reeling from Erika’s explosive greeting to care much about a small Russian girl taunting them. The officer on the other hand isn’t so happy about the turn of events. He’s quick to respond, quicker than everyone else, and slams his metallic fist into Cossack’s chest, sending her to the ground in a gasping heap. In one more quick motion, he swipes a necklace back into his hand, appraising it in the pale light of the runes carved on the walls. The crystal glows with the light of a thousand suns as he puts it around his neck.

“You haven’t foiled anything, untermensch. Die knowing that you have utterly failed your country.” He raises the fist, aiming it at her head. He’s stopped by the appearance of Blizzard, in her transformed glory. The room’s temperature drops by almost twenty degrees, and you shiver intensely as the wave of frosty air hits you. Even the officer is dumbstruck by the sight of Blizzard.

“You came looking for power, correct? Well, you have found it.” Her voice as an unearthly lit to it, as if there was three Blizzards speaking through the same mouth. You finally regain your senses, and spot many of the Hexengrenadiers doing the same. Some are even running for what few spiritstones remain.

The officer seems to have enough on his plate to deal with. The Major is firing away at him with his revolvers. To both yours and his surprise, the .45 rounds bounce off his chest. He doesn’t look any worse for wear. The Major smartly decides to support you rather than Blizzard, who’s glowering at him with more hatred than you thought possible. Blizzard lunges at the officer, she doesn’t seem to be armed, but if watching Josie fight was any indication magical girls needn’t be armed to be lethal.

You can only spot a bright flash of light from the corner of your eye, not unlike a magical girl transforming. A shrill shriek of pain fills the room, it doesn’t belong to Blizzard. You focus on the Hexengrenadiers, some of them are in the process of putting on the spiritstones. You can’t allow this.

“Let’s deal with ‘em!” Several Hexengrenadiers crowd around their comrades, and send anti magic rounds at you. Several of them graze your face and arms, but a few hit home. You gasp in shock and pain as they tear through your muscles and blood vessels. Another bright source of light fills your vision, this one coming from Josie and her arms instead. Those scintillating flares that cover her arms seem somehow thicker, stronger in color than usual. She leaps in front of you, and the bullets sizzle off into gas in those flares.

“I’m not gonna let you pick on the boss like that! Come at me!” She grits her teeth as the rounds impact her arms and melt away into nothingness. They buckle and she looks back at you desperately. The anti magic rounds lodged in you sear, but your tough through the pain. You summon your hammer, and lunge into the fray. Your wide, sweeping swings knock half a dozen Hexengrenadiers off their feet. They scramble back up, and do their best to keep you in the sights of their weapons. Your wounds intensify as you slam your hammer into the ground, causing a tidal wave of stone and rock to meet your aggressors. A part of your mind questions this. You could only do magic like this while transformed, and especially not with anti magic seeping through your body, a part of you wonders what happened to let this happen. The Hexengrenadiers meet the wall behind them, trapped in between a wall and a hard place. Diane is a blur, barely visible as she zips through what remains of the Hexengrenadiers. Her silver rapier zips through their flesh like a bolt of lightning, and she darts from victim to victim, blood spurting from wounds all over their body. Her eyes glow a bright red, malice and a tinge of happiness flow through them.

“More! Bring me more! I’ll kill all of you myself!”

The battle finally ends in your room, and you look around, noticing the Soviets and that officer have disappeared. You limp around the corner, and see something that chills you to the core.

You stumble as fast as you can in an attempt to link up with Blizzard and the others. Your own magical girls follow you. The stench of sulfur is heavy in the air, you feel something heavy weigh down on your shoulders as you approach that monster that’s currently engaging Blizzard. It laughs, a throaty, baritone chuckle of one who’s assured of his victory. The Major is further behind his magical girl counterpart, and has apparently shoved Cossack into the half track. He motions for you to get on. You shake your head, and his eyes go wide. Blood, paints the walls and floor of the Mausoleum. There’s just as much red, human blood as there is violet. Claw marks marr Blizzard’s pretty face, and a large series of tears go through her stomach. Blood drips from it, freezing as it hits the floor. She notices you four, and says nothing. She sends a hail of needle like icicles into the officer’s flesh. More purple blood oozes from the wounds, he recoils from the strike. They melt, and the holes the made seal up quickly.

“This is truly the best your precious motherland has to offer?! Pathetic, all of you!” He rears his taloned hand up, and slashes her once more, down her chest. Blood flies through the air, Blizzard is still unfazed by this. Her wounds aren’t healing like they would normally, do they have anti-magical properties? She spits bloody saliva into the monster’s face, and summons a blizzard of razor sharp hailstones to cut into his many eyes. This finally seems to have an effect, as he swings wildly, connecting with nothing.
“My life...for Russia.” She mutters as she finally falls face first into a pool of her own blood. The monster is still flailing around helplessly. You can’t feel your wounds any more. Any pain that you might have felt has been replaced by pure, blind, hatred. The creature finally regains it’s sight as the last of the icicles melt. The Major shouts frantically for you to escape, and the other magical girls do. You transform, blinding the monster further with the flash of light that accompanies it. You can feel the gem around your neck glow just as brightly as the officer’s once did. You can hear that voice from earlier in your mind again. It blocks out the voice of Erika screaming at you to run.

“No. Mercy.” You agree, and your hammer appears in your hands.

“Why are you people so reluctant to accept defeat?” The beast chuckles again, claws glinting in the light

Hatred for the officer clouds your judgement, and what the spirit locked in the stone around your neck is offering sounds mighty tempting right now. He’s still busy gloating about how Germany will triumph against the rats. What he says next blinds you completely with rage, the desire to rip this man’s face off increases several times.

“I might consider sparing you, if you decide to join your betters in the Hexenkraft.” You roar in rage at the man, in a voice that doesn’t belong to you. It’s full of pure, primal hatred. The officer’s demonic form steps back, you don’t know if it’s in fear or anticipation for your attack. You don’t care. Nothing he does will save him now. The gem in the center of your necklace gleams with power, power being sent into your unprepared body. Your veins want to rip themselves open, you feel like you’re being submerged into a volcano. The officer shields his eyes with the claws he used to kill Blizzard, fear clearly visible on his face.

You don’t know what you look like now, but you’re happy with the reaction that it’s elicited from your victim. He regains his composure slightly, looking more like a cornered and trapped animal instead of the threatening monster. Dozens of ghostly forms of both you and the officer appear in your vision, dozens of the figures of your form block and strike and slash his flesh with impunity, and a significantly few of them are having the faces and chests torn open by a pearly spear and an ornate metal shield. They disappear when you will them to.

You know what to do.

Things have been crazy for me, really sorry about the delay

The spirit hasn’t intended on hurting you yet, and you don’t think it will now. Especially since that doing so might result in both of your ends at the talons of this creature. It’d be more prudent to help each other. You lift a hand into the air, holding it wide and your weapon materializes in it. A spear with a wicked looking point, as if you had ripped the tooth of some predator and screwed it onto your weapon. You swing and thrust through the air with it, testing its weight and heft. You’ve never used a spear before, you figure that it can’t be too hard. You can feel the soothing heat of magic coating your arm, the nebulous blob on your forearm slowly becomes a shield, lovingly carved with images of battle and victory. The engravings cover the shield in the light

You follow through with your ghostly premonitions, spear cutting through air like chaff. The arms rise to block your strike, but you pull the spear back before it can get lodged in his tough meat. He gasps as the spear finds it’s way into his chest, the ivory point cuts through his muscles like a butcher’s knife through meat. Your face spreads into a grin of satisfaction. To see your enemy brought low so easily is deeply satisfying for both you and the spirit inhabiting your body right now.

“Defeat is not acceptable.” You inform the demon with cold professionalism. The voice that springs from your throat isn’t yours, the voice is devoid of any emotion, devoid of pity. The only thing that it carries is the desire for victory. The demon bares his teeth in response, you can sense his desperation growing as he swings wildly in your direction. His claws whistle through the air. You don’t even need the spirit’s abilities to avoid them. What few strikes do manage to impact you do so onto your shield. They leave him wide open for another stab with your spear, causing another howl of pain to spring from his mouth.

“Victory.” The voice is clear, and crisp as it says this word. Your lips curl into a smile, and you bring your spear once more into the demon’s chest. It finds the spiritstone buried under a ton of flesh, and the demon screams as it’s prison shatters. You instinctively cover your eyes, to protect them from the vortex of light and energy that comes from the shattered crystal. All that’s left is the singed form of the officer. He glares at your magnificence, and falls onto his knees, clutching his head in pain

“Da-damn you...”

You will the spirit to leave, like your visions from earlier. To let you return to your form. But it’s like trying to swim with lead weights tied to you. Almost impossible. You don’t relent, and streams of energy swirl back into the gem around your neck.

And then you fall, tired, hungry, and thirsty. Your vision darkens, the last thing you see is the Major rushing to retrieve both Blizzard and your prone forms.

The bustle of people is enough to awaken you. Your head pounds, and your eyes throb with pain. The bed beneath you is delightfully soft, as if you were sleeping on a mattress made of soap bubbles. Your body protests as you rise to a sitting position, to find Erika looking at you, face a mixture of fear and worry. Josie and Diane accompany her. The Bostonian is taking things much more lightly, and pulls you into a hug, lighting your body aflame.

"Can't believe you did that! You made it look like you weren't even trying." You try to wiggle from from her hug, but stop once that causes more pain through out your body.

"I'm not sure it was me who did it, but..." Your eyes flit to

"Sure it was! I've seen you fight before, and you were just as before as you were then!" The pain gives way to comfort as Josie pulls you closer

Diane is trying her best to conceal her worry by reading a magazine. She's failing miserably.

"We-well, your technique was impeccable, that much is certain. I am not sure if it's safe to keep, erh, transforming like that. Anyways, Command wants to see you right away, in regards to recent events."

Your stomach growls like a wild animal, and is easily noticed by the rest of your team. Letting that spirit girl occupy your body and mind must have taken a lot out of your body. You aren’t quite sure if that’s true or not, the science behind possessions and it’s effects on people haven’t been closely studied. Doesn’t change the fact that you’d probably eat ship’s worth of food given the chance. Would you have to eat for two people from now on? Can ghosts even eat? All questions that you’re determined to answer in the mess hall.

“Hey, didja hear her? Diane said Command wanted to see you. Heeeello?” Josie’s frantic waving in front of your face cease your mindless mental ramblings.

“Jeez, looked like you saw a ghost there. You sure everythings fine, boss?” You give Josie the best smile you can in your state.

“Yup! Never better! Don’t worry about me! Say, who wants to get some food with me?” Josie’s never one to turn down food, and nods enthusiastically. You stumble out of the bed like a cripple, and Erika’s there to keep you from falling onto your face. Diane gets your other side, leaving her magazine on the stool she was sitting on. Major Adamska is standing outside the infirmary, and stares you down as you leave. He says nothing as he turns curtly on the ball of his foot and marches away from you.

The four of you trek to the mess hall, and you heap two orders of every kind of meat and starch available. Diane watches as you tear through the food with morbid fascination, the food piled on your tray dwarfs her meal by several degrees. Only Josie’s portion can compare to yours, she digs into with wild abandon. On the other hand, Erika has barely touched her food. You make eye contact with Adamska, who’s sitting two tables away from you. He glares at you again, before returning to his food.

“I spoke with Katherine while you were asleep.” You look up from your pasta with a confused look on your face. The noodles dangle from your mouth as you question her.

“Whozzat?”

“Marionette.” So it looks like she hasn’t escaped yet.

“And? Any stunning revelations? Secret information only she’d privy too?” Erika shifts in her seat uncomfortably as you prod her with the questions.

You nosily slurp your pasta into your mouth, Diane’s shocked expression at your display almost makes you spit it all out in laughter. You chew on the sauce covered noodles thoughtfully, and then you continue your barrage of questions for Erika. She sits upright, seeming to have found at least some modicum of confidence. A horrifying thought crosses your mind. What if they’re plotting something together. What if this was all an act. What if she’s some kind of advanced sleeper agent planted in your ranks. You lean over the table, coming very close to the silver haired girl’s face. She doesn’t back down from you.

“What did you two talk about?” You speak clearly and slowly in an attempt to intimidate Erika into telling you the truth. She stabs a slab of steak with a fork, and shoves it into her mouth in response.

“About home. About how the other girls were doing. What did you think we were talking about?” This takes you aback. You’ve completely forgotten that Erika’s home country is the enemy. That she’s the only good German magical girl. But you’ve also forgotten the fact that she must have had friends, during her time in the Hexenkraft. All soldiers should, or they’d go insane in short order. You might have to kill some of them. She might have to kill some of them You sit back into your seat, dumbstruck by her response. She stares at you, gaze piercing right into your soul.

You lean back, and continue eating as you watch Erika closely. You’ve spent enough time with Erika. She’s saved your damned life. On several occasions. And you’ve done the same for her. You’d be willing to die for her, just like the rest of your magical girls. Erika would do the same for you in a heartbeat. You’re sure of it. She seems to have calmed down, and stares back at you. Erika chews on her food slowly, and then swallows, and then sips from her glass of milk when you drop your question on her.

“Tell me about them. These girls. Magical girls from other nations fascinate me. Who are they? What were they like?” Her chewing slows to a stop as memories come back to her, she sets her fork down, stares at her food, eyes practically glazed over.

“Girls. Like you or Diane or Josie.” She glances back up at you briefly, before resuming her observation of the table below her.

“I remember one fondly. She was brave, kind, the best friend all of us had during the hell of the war.” She fiddles with her food using her silverware, and you wait for her to finish her story. She forces herself to continue.

“Margaret made us feel like we were unstoppable, and did a better job of it than Schwarzwald’s indoctrination ever could.” You narrow your eyes at her use of the word and disgust wells in your heart They brainwashed them.

“Even Dracula realized what a good leader she was. She lead my old team to success everywhere we went. Poland, Denmark, Finland. None of them could stand before us.” She glances nervously at Diane, and whispers the last country this Margaret and her magical girls had helped conquer.

“France...” Diane’s ears perk up, and she glares at the German. Josie holds her by the sleeves of the Frenchwoman’s dress. The girl holds her knife like a dagger, gripping until her knuckles turn a bone white. Josie’s voice takes a desperate tone as she struggles to restrain her companion.

“Hey hey hey! Relax, Diane, c’mon we’re all friends here! Please”

“What. Did. You. Just. Say?”

Diane strains against Josie’s iron grip, desperately trying to lunge at Erika with the knife in her hand. Any rational thought that once occupied her mind have been replaced by hatred rage. Josie tugs harder on the girl’s dress, almost to the point of tearing the silky fabric. The boxer’s arm strength is miles beyond Diane’s, and she pulls her into a constricting grip, forcing the girl’s arms to her sides with her own. Diane eventually realizes the futility of trying to escape from Josie, and her struggling slows to nothing more than token attempts. She glares at Erika, probably wishing that she could kill with a look right now. Erika stares back, doing a good job of standing her ground in the face of Diane’s rage. Her anger finally simmers down enough for coherent words to leave her mouth.

“How many of my people did you kill? A hundred? Two hundred? Do you enjoy it like the rest of the Krauts? You filthy rat. Athena should have left you to rot in France, monstre” You wince as Diane’s verbal tirade fills the air of the mess hall. It draws more than a few confused glances in your direction, even the Major ceases his eating to glance up at the commotion. Silence reigns in the room, and Josie lets an uneasy chuckle, and slowly drags Diane out of the mess.

“It’s as much Erika’s fault as it is any other German soldier’s fault. Hurting her won’t bring your country back. Or your family. In fact, it’ll do the opposite, and you’ll lose an ally. What happened happened.” Diane’s glare softens slightly as you speak to her, her eyes find yours, as she opens her mouth to say something. Josie interrupts her before she gets the chance.

“Haha! Well that was an interesting conversation, but I think it’s time to leave now! C’mon let’s go talk about, uh, make up or something.” You sit back down, and try to encourage Erika with a smile. She speaks before you. She fiddles with her fingers uneasily, the permanently words stuck in her mind.

“You know that’s what they called me before. Monster. After I left Hexenkraft.” She stares at the floor below her, you don’t have to see her face to know how she feels. You can feel your heart sink into the floor with Erika’s as she despairs.

“Is that all we are? Witches and monsters? Tools for a war?”

[x] “It’s what’s needed now. You said you played the piano, right? That’s proof enough that people like us can be more”
[x] “I...I’m not sure. What happens when we don’t need our magic anymore? The future scares me a whole lot.
[x] “We’re soldiers, and shouldn’t try to think too hard about things like this.”

Erika’s attempts at fighting back tears are only partially successful. Light reflects off of the streams of tears flowing freely down her face. You sigh as your tray. There’s still plenty of food left on it, if only you had the appetite to eat. It pain you to see a good meal like this one wasted, but you have more serious matters to attend to. The question Erika posed is one you haven’t been able to answer yourself. Ever since you manifested your abilities and later, your transformed form you’ve been fighting this war. The Bureau has been using magical girls to fight crime ever since the first one made her powers known to the world. You’re fairly certain in what you want to do when you win this war. You don’t intend on becoming a career officer like your father, or a weapons engineer like your sister. You’d be more than happy if you’d never have to even hear about the military again. You want to be an architect, your powers might even help you in this. To help rebuild the world after it’s suffered. It’s a bit flowery for you, but you like the idea of it. However, for a girl like Erika, whose abilities are only good in combat, the future must look bleak for her. A girl torn from her family, and sent to fight in unwinnable situations, against enemies that would defeat an ordinary man with ease. The similarities between the two of you aren’t lost on you. You wonder how many times this story's been repeated since the war started.

“Yes. That’s all we are for now. Because that’s what our country and our friends need us to be. When we go home, things will change, I promise. You’ll never need to summon that gun ever again. You said you played the piano, right? That’s proof enough that people like us can be more. We just have to go home and see the day.” Erika seems to be on the verge of hugging you, but what linger despair in her heart seems to keep her from being able to. She looks you in the eye as if you just told her that she was blessed by some higher power.

“H-home. I don’t have one anymore.” You interrupt her before she can say anything to worsen her condition, shushing her with a finger on her lips.
“Your home is with me now. The Bureau can accommodate you, have you ever wanted to live in New York?” She nods, slowly and happiness returns to her eyes, slowly but surely.

“I’ve heard stories. It doesn’t seem as bad as the textbooks make it.” You grin, lips practically stretching from ear to ear.

“Well, we don’t make you read any of that propaganda schlock at The Bureau.” That’s not a hundred percent true, but she doesn’t need to hear that right now.

Your moment with Erika is ruined spectacularly by a courier tapping you on the shoulder. You almost snap at him, but he hands you an envelope, bearing the US Army seal on the opening of it. That’s weird, your mail usually doesn’t have that. Nor is it usually sealed. The courier disappears before you can ask him anything about the letter.

[x] Open it now, if it’s got the seal on it it must be important.
[x] Forget it, Erika hasn’t finished her story

You’ve never seen a letter like this before. The fact that it’s stamped with the emblem of the United States Army must mean it’s significant in some manner. It’d be ill advised to just ignore it, no matter how much you wanted to hear about Erika. You give the distraught girl one last pat on the back before leaving to your bunk, you don’t want to be opening it in front of dozens of pairs of prying eyes after all. Who knows what kinds of state secrets are written inside. Erika looks at you like a lost puppy, and gets up to follow you out of the mess.

“I’ll be around if you wanna talk again. We’re all in the same bunk, so don’t worry about it.” The hot Egyptian air smacks you in the face as you open the door to the rest of the base. The beating of propellers fill your years and tanks, walkers, and troops stream out of them. Looks like you managed to hold out until reinforcements arrived. Maybe the Afrika Korps are off schedule? You have to strain your eyes to see them, but you can swear that you see other magical girls disembarking from a plane. You’re pretty sure they are, what else would a teenage girl be doing among soldiers?

The bunk is slightly cooler than outside, and you flop onto your own bed. The mattresses beneath you is heavenly, and you pop open the letter with your finger. There’s a slip of paper folded neatly inside. The words on the sheet are curt and concise, written with military precision and efficiency.

Athena Christine Dawkins,
Your actions in Occupied France have not gone unnoticed among Allied High Command. What you have done there is most commendable. In addition, your team’s repeated successes against the Hexenkraft in Egypt has also attracted the attention of your superiors. I am one of them, and would like you to help in the upcoming Operation, Sargon. I am not at liberty to disclose what your objectives will be, but I can tell you that they will be crucial. Report to your local commanding officer if you wish to accept this assignment
Sincerely,
Major General George S. Patton

Well, whoever wrote this letter sure is a charmer. This Patton guy should have been a writer instead of an officer. You chuckle as you go to put the letter away. Wait, you should probably read that over once more, just to make sure that you’ve gotten everything in it. You splutter as you read the name on the bottom. George. S. Patton. You scream like a banshee, startling people dozens of rooms away from you.

[x] You’d have to be out of your mind to not accept, and make sure to tell everyone about this too
[x] You’re busy.

I think it's from that Strike Witches Afrika doujin series, considering the tank witches in the background

You hop out of your bed, bouncing as you skip your way out of the hall, you have to try your hardest to keep from bursting out into laughter on par with Marionette. Major General George Patton wants your help. He wants you as part of his force. This is the best day of your life. You draw more than a few shocked looks as you frolic your way to the command tent. You push it open, you’re shaking in excitement, and the staff of the tent give you the same look the people outside do. You locate the CO of the base based on the ranked insignias on the staff’s uniforms, and shove your letter into his face. He backs away from you slowly, and examines it. He nods, seeming to understand what the letter means, and he moves to speak with the other officers present in the tent. You storm out of the tent, puffs of dust coming from your footsteps, you dash back to your bunk. Josie’s lying on Diane’s back, flipping through a newspaper as Diane does her best to read her own book. It’s a surreal sight. How is it that Diane can support a boxer’s weight like that? She doesn’t seem to mind either. You guess that it’s just one of the parts of being friends with Josie. Erika’s sitting against a wall , watching her mechanical fingers flex and unflex, her face is shadowed by the bed sitting above her. The peace and quiet of the scene is shattered like a cheap china cup when you slam the door open.

“Guess whose command we just got transferred to?!” You don’t wait for them to offer an answer before you provide on for them.

“Only one of the most ingenious officers in American history! Second to none!” You hold your letter up high in pride. Diane gives you a soft smile, but Josie is more receptive to the news, she hops down and shows you the headlines to her newspaper.

GENERAL PATTON READYING TO KNOCK JERRY OUT. FIRST THE MIDDLE EAST, THEN GERMANY

“We’re going place, I just know it! I’ll have my own place in history textbook!” Diane’s quick to curb her friend’s enthusiasm

“Hey hey hey, you don’t plan on hogging all the glory for yourself, right ami?” The night comes quickly, and you can barely find sleep.

You regret it when you do.

It’s too hot. You’re too thirsty. You feel like you haven’t eaten in an eternity. Your people have to be here, they must be. You did not defend them to have them vanish like sand in the wind. Your legs refuse to function. They’re dead weights, stopping you from finding your kin. The tears streaming down your face have long since evaporated, and your body can’t find the water to make more. Memories of the coffin spring to mind, and despair accompanies them. You can hear the same speech from earlier. You beg your body to move, for whatever power brought you to life to give you more. You squeeze your eyes shut as you await the inevitable. It doesn’t come. Instead, you’re face to face with another girl. She’s flanked by those bizarre soldiers, but she waves them away, and they obey without a word. You can see blood seeping from the corners of her mouth, the glint of a tooth is barely visible from her mouth. She speaks, in your language somehow as she smiles at you. Her smile is beautiful, it’s glory only being outdone by the sun itself. You don’t even notice the strange canines that she has. The girl extends a hand for you

Her attempts at persuasion fall on deaf ears. Some part of your rational mind regains control of your thoughts. Her smile doesn’t look as dazzling, it looks more like the predatory grin of a killer. You aren’t interested in her help. Her soldiers attacked you without provocation, something you aren’t keen on just forgiving. You turn your face away from her, uninterested in whatever else she has to say. Her smile falters, but it quickly returns to it’s previous state. She runs a finger down your neck, holding it in place against the vein there. You can’t feel your pulse against her finger. She scoffs, and nicks the blood vessel with a talon like fingernail. A pinprick of black blood forms, she wipes it off with her finger, licking it. You give her a disgusted look, one that only makes her scoff more.

“Just kill me already.” She laughs, deep voice that sounds more like it belongs on a snake instead of a person

“But why would I do that? I’m not a cruel person, I don’t kill those who haven’t wronged me.” You use what little water is left in your dried body to spit at her. She effortlessly dodges it, and doesn’t seem to care about your transgression. She glances at your necklace, and the devious smile on her face grows. She takes it’s gem a hand caressing it, making you gasp involuntarily.

“If I wanted to, I could. With one. Quick. Motion.” She squeeze on the crystal, your mouth opens into a silent scream. You want to beg her to stop, to spare you.

“Besides, you being dead does me no good.” She eyes the wound in your neck that she made. You can do nothing as she opens her mouth wide, her fangs are long like a cobra’s. In one swift motion, she bites you, you feel each inch of tooth enter your neck, and you swear that they’re going to go through your throat. The blinding pain is replaced by numbness, you can feel your eyes starting to close, and your fingertips are cold, even against the steaming desert sands. She watches as your face warps in pain, and then she finally releases your throat, your unnatural black blood spewing from your neck. She dabs the sides of her mouth with a sleeve.

“An excellent vintage. Thank you for the drink, Miss Gaia.”

You want to cry, but you can’t.

You reawaken screaming until your throat was sore, and find the someone crowding around you. You rise slowly, and your neck screams in pain, feeling as if someone jammed a spike straight through it. The sun hasn’t come up yet, you remember that you’re supposed to get briefed on your transfer today. It looks like the others have vanished. Her usual carefree expression is replaced by a look of deep concern.

“I said that I’d take care of you, and that they should just go. You were screaming bloody murder in your sleep, boss. You, um, sure everything’s okay? It was just a normal nightmare, right? Nothing creepy?”

Your thoughts swirl in your brain as the last vestiges of the nightmare leave your body and mind. You saw Dracula, you’re certain of it. How many other vampiric magical girls can there be in the Middle East? You got a taste of her powers first hand. Or maybe second hand, you aren’t exactly sure how this whole dream thing works. Or why you keep dreaming of the same person. Maybe she has some significance to you? Or maybe you’re dreaming of the past. Josie’s voice finally breaks you from the reverie of your thoughts.

“I don’t think you shoulda kept that necklace, boss. You’ve been acting a bit...strange lately.”

“I’ve been having these dreams before I found that necklace.” Josie doesn’t look all that convinced. There’s not much you can do to change that. You wonder if you should tell her about the person who drank from your dream self. Dracula. The very mention of her was almost enough to send Josie into a murderous rampage.

“Well, I wasn’t getting bit by Dracula in my previous dream. This time I dreamt I was some girl who couldn’t move, and then. Yeah.” Josie responds like you expect her to. She stiffens, and her gaze hardens. It doesn’t suit Josie at all.

“Where?” You shrug, there weren’t that many landmarks you could use to pinpoint the location of Dracula and her victim.

“It’s just a dream, Josie. Nothing to get worked up about. What happens to the people that she bites anyways. Aside from the obvious” She doesn’t seem to be listening. Until you mention the biting part.

“She takes their abilities. I don’t really get it. All I know is that after she bit Clockwork, time she seemed to be able to make time stop.” She grits her teeth and socks a wall.

“Like Holly could. I won’t let it happen to you.”

You don’t intend on letting that happen either.
