Demons. Eldjötnar. Oni. Asura. Jinn. Monsters.

Whatever they are called, they now rule the world. On December 21st, 2012, the barrier separating Earth from what is now called the Eskathos ruptured, and these twisted creatures emerged from the Breach to gorge themselves upon the flesh and souls of humanity and sate their endless appetite for wrath, pride, envy, insincerity, falseness, boasting, and bellicosity.

Mad Wendigo spreads frozen wastelands and devours all those unlucky enough to cross its path. Radiant Lucifer spreads his devout cult of personality throughout the world. Jealous Andhaka abducts the wives of his despairing subjects. Two-faced Shezmu drowns northern Africa in orgies of wine and blood. Hidden Vucub-Caquix usurps day and night in South America. Arrogant Arachne weaves her monstrous fashion out of hair shaved from the heads of beautiful maidens. Evil-eyed Balor wages war and battle in Ireland and its neighbors to expand his kingdom.

Demons were not the only ones to return, however. Soon after the Breach opened, the Relics awakened their power. Only these men and women, mortal embodiments of divine weapons and tools, hold the power to match the forces of the Eskathos.

Excalibur and its Sheath arose first, followed by the Thunderbolt, the Tower of Babel, the Brahmastra, Gungnir, the Was and the Smoking Mirror.

The Relics defend human civilization and gather their strength until the day comes when they can lay siege to the Breach and assail the Eskathos itself.

You are one of them.

The Ghoul doesn't seem to mind that you're attacking it. Its cackling rings in your ear and it spreads its arms out, welcoming your assault.

Natsumi and Orianne have it flanked in melee range, you're standing at mid-range, ready to command Gleipnir to attack, and Selene is standing farther back with her Silver Bow at the ready. You have a tactical advantage, but Ghouls are pretty tough opponents, and you're under orders to go fight the Wendigo after this. You can't afford a single mistake.

You need to kill this Ghoul quickly.

"Gleipnir, crush its muscles!"

Your Relic obeys your commands. It wraps itself around the Ghoul's arms and legs, causing its muscles to burst like boils. Green-white pus oozes out of the wounds.

"That…" Orianne is starting to look a little green as well. "That is disgusting."

"You'll get used to it," you say. "Get ready for its attack."

The Ghoul isn't as strong as it was a few seconds ago, but this kind of binding isn't enough to affect its mobility, especially since it's undead. The Ghoul lets out a choked warcry and runs straight towards you.

You dodge to the left to avoid the Ghoul's attack. At first glance, it appears to be the wrong decision; the Ghoul's clawed hand curves to tear out your throat, but at the very last moment, the Ghoul trips on something and stumbles, so its attack narrowly avoids your shoulder.

If anyone asks, you totally meant to do that.

The Ghoul's back is exposed to your whole team, but it won't stay vulnerable for much longer. You need to seize this opportunity while it's there.

You pull your arm back and slam it down on the Ghoul's head in a powerful haymaker before it can get its bearings.

The Ghoul groans - or at least it sounds like a groan - and its face slams into the ground.

You take a few steps back and allow Orianne and Natsumi to get back in flanking position. The Ghoul is between you and Selene now, so she has a clean shot as well.

The Ghoul is on its last legs now, but it still needs to be finished off.

"Natsumi." You jerk your head towards the fallen Ghoul. "Finish it."

"Huh?" Natsumi is momentarily taken aback at your request. "Is that all right? You did most of the work."

"Yeah, it's fine," you tell her. "It's better to spread the kills around. It helps the team build a reputation."

Natsumi shrugs and raises Ame-no-Ohabari. The Relic draws a silver arc in the air before cleaving the Ghoul's head right off its body. The Ghoul twitches a few more times, but quickly stops moving. A small lake of pus pools around its body.

Gleipnir releases the Ghoul and wraps itself around your arm. Thankfully, it remains pristine no matter what kind of filth it gets dragged through.

"Are you all right?" You ask your Relic.

"Such a week opponent isn't worth mentioning, master," Gleipnir. "Rather, I look forward to challenging the Wendigo."

You move a few hundred yards away from the Ghoul's corpse in case it can be used as a beacon or trap before calling Francis.

"This is all pointless," Selene complains. "There is no need for you to fight at close ranges when I alone am enough to slay the enemy with my Silver Bow."

"Now, now, Selene." Orianne tries to calm the other girl down. "There's no such thing as a useless Relic. We just need to play to our strengths."

"And I'm saying our strength would be greater if I were allowed to use my divine gifts to their full potential instead of being held back by the rest of you.

Okay, that's… quite a bit too far, even by Selene's usual standards. You can't have a team breakdown at a moment like this.

- [DC8] "Now isn't the time for this."
- [DC8] "We're a military organization first and foremost. We have to maintain a chain of command."

"Now isn't the time for this," you say. "We just finished with the safe part of our mission, and now we need to go against the fucking Wendigo. Selene, if you have a problem with your position on the team, take up with the Commander after we get back."

"I -" Selene crosses her arms and looks like she's going to talk back. You glare at her and hold her gaze until you're certain she doesn't. "Fine. We'll talk about this later."

"Thank you, Selene."

You send a signal to Francis and by the time you release the button on your radio, the golden Vimana is hovering in the sky right above you. Francis helps you all climb on board and you take a moment to recover from your… altercation with the Ghoul.

"How was it?" Francis asks. "You don't look beaten up, so I'm assuming you won."

"The battle was not too difficult," Natsumi says, "but some things the Ghoul said were… disconcerting."

"Oh?" Francis raises an eyebrow. "Did it break into a dance choreography?"

"No, but it did start talking," Orianne says. "It has a Master of some sort apparently. We'll have to speak with the Commander about it."

"Hmph!" Selene snorts flicks her hair dismissively. "There is no reason for us to heed that beast's ramblings. It is dead, and its Master will follow it."

- "Right. The Ghoul was nothing, and I'm not afraid of its Master, whoever it may be."
- "There's no point in worrying about that now. The Wendigo is our next top."
- "Francis, you should probably stock your cellar before we get back. I get the feeling we're going to need a little something extra."

If you need to worry, the Commander will tell you later.

"Sure thing, bro." Francis grins and hops back into his pilot seat. "I know the AO, so we'll be there in a few seconds."

You stand on the edge of the Vimana and look down at the world below. Thankfully, whatever protection the Vimana extends to its guests also prevents vertigo. Otherwise, you'd probably be puking your guts out right now.

A snow-white landscapes stretches on, seemingly without end. There's something bothering you, but you can't quite put your finger on it…

"Francis, something's wrong," you say. "We should be there by now, right?"

"Come to think of it," Selene says, "I think we flew by that mountain twice already. I simply assumed you were trying to confuse our foe."

Francis frowns and looks around. He mutters to himself and the Vimana zips through the sky.

"Well, this is certainly new," Francis says. "The Wendigo is doing something with the wind to throw off my navigation. It's not as powerful as his blizzard, so I didn't notice."

"Can you avoid it?" Orianne asks.

"Not really," Francis says, "but I know what the effect's limits are, so I can drop you off right at the edge of it. Sorry, but that's the best I can do for now."

So you won't be able to just drop on top of the Wendigo and hit him with a surprise attack. This is looking more and more like a trap.

"We need options, Francis," you say. "Can you give us a little more?"

Francis thinks for a few seconds before nodding. "I can drop you off at a plain, a forest or a mountain," he says. "Your choice. That's really the absolute best I can do though. You'll have to figure the rest out between yourselves."

The plain won't have any cover, but it'll be the easiest to navigate. The mountain will be extremely dangerous to climb down, but it should hide your approach. The forest should be somewhere between the two.

- "We'll try our chances with the plain."
- "Bring us to the forest."

"Bring us to the forest," you say. "It's a happy middle ground between falling off a mountain and getting spotted by the fucking Wendigo."

"You got it," Francis says. "Good luck."

The Vimana flies low towards the forest and you disembark before the airship speeds off again.

The squad stands around, uncertain of what to do next. Oh, the forest isn't a problem; you've all had plenty of survival training. The problem is what comes after you get out of the forest.

People have fought the Wendigo before. It has never gone well for them. Your own battle against Balor lasted only a few seconds, and there's a very good reason why you bailed immediately once you realized what you were doing. Unconsciously, none of you want to step forward. Even Selene's arrogant bravado is useless here.

Well. You're the veteran. If anyone can get this squad going, it's you.

- [DC8] "Let's go. Just think of this as another mission."

"Just be careful and we'll all be fine," you say. "I promise."

"I don't want to bring the morale down," Orianne says, "but that is a very big promise to make, Eamon."

"My superiors transferred me to New York so that I could gain more experience," Natsumi says, "and while I have no reason not to trust you… this still seems like a little too much experience. I believe I need a moment to prepare myself."

"No matter how long you take, it won't change anything," Selene says. "The Wendigo will still be there. If anything, we're wasting time and putting ourselves at greater risk."

With Selene coming around, the other two women feel a little more pressure to join in. They look at each other, then at you, and nod in agreement, drawing their Relics. The squad is good to go.

You just need to find a way out of this forest first.

The Silver Bow is a Relic passed on by Artemis, whose purview includes hunting. Guiding you through this forest should be well within Selene's abilities.

"Selene, lead us through," you say. "Show us your talent as Artemis' successor."

"It's only natural for such a task to fall to me." Selene is practically preening at your request. "Follow behind me, and don't do anything stupid. I won't be held responsible if you get lost or attract the attention of the Wendigo's forces."

Selene walks ahead and you follow after her.

The forest is completely still. The forest is completely silent. You don't know if it's because of Selene's survival skills, and you're not sure you want to know. You're completely alone out here, and you'd rather not think that the Wendigo likes it that way.

When you get closer to the edge of the forest, Selene holds her hand up to motion you to stop.

You still don't see or hear anything, but you can feel the Wendigo's presence. Just a few steps closer, and you know you'll be right in front of it.

Selene turns around to look at you. You can see her hands trembling. Yours aren't much better.

"We'll prepare an ambush," you say. "Selene, climb up a tree and ready an arrow. Natsumi and Orianne, prepare a flanking manoeuvre, just like with the Ghoul. We'll draw the Wendigo out and get the drop on it."

Given the kind of opponent the Wendigo is, you need every advantage you can get.

Selene sets up a nest in a nearby tree and aims an arrow at the direction you think the Wendigo will pop up from. Once she's in position, you walk towards the edge of the forest, Natsumi and Orianne at your side.

You raise your hand and motion for Selene to loose her arrow. A silver stream of light arcs through the trees and lands in the clearing ahead of you.

The ground is ripped apart with an overbearing noise. A single bony arm covered in frost surges out, and a clawed hand slams into the empty spot where the arrow landed.

There is a moment of silence followed by a shattering roar. The trees around you explode, and the shards of wood would be enough to rip you to shreds if they weren't being blasted away from you. You look over your shoulder; Selene is still holding her ground. Good.

A skeletal figure pulls itself out the earth. It stands a hundred feet above you and roars again. Black pus flows down its body, only to freeze solid, and bits of rotting flesh cling to the creature's body like grim armor.

The Wendigo has arrived. Thanks to your distraction, you have the opening shot.

It won't impede the Wendigo's agility, but it will reduce its power; the best falters and crashes to the ground before picking itself back up. Natsumi is the first person in the attack's path; she jumps back immediately, knowing Ame-no-Ohabari simply isn't made to block attacks like this one. Orianne waits for the attack to get a little closer to adjust her timing.

You dig your feet into the ground and hold your arms out.

It's not your most brilliant plan, but it works. The Wendigo's hand slams into you with the force of a fucking maglev, but you hold together and grab the creature's hand in turn. Black liquid bursts all over you, and the hand is several times bigger than you are, but you've got it in a grapple for the next second or so. That's enough to create an opening.

Your connection to Gleipnir has gotten a little stronger, so you can try to further weaken the Wendigo. Of course, you'd have to sacrifice an attack, and the consequences of failure would be… unfortunate.

The Relic twists and tightens, ripping the Wendigo's innards apart. The creature howls and rears up to stand on its hind legs. It opens its mouth to suck in air, and its chest expands until the ribs crack.

"What is it doing?" Natsumi asks.

"It must be preparing some sort of attack," you say. "Get ready to defend yourself."

The Wendigo exhales with a fast breath and the moisture in the air turns to ice and falls down like hail. This is a divine ability comparable to the power of Relics. In order to defend against it, you'd have to recall Gleipnir and leave the Wendigo unbound, putting you back at square one.

Alternatively, you can trust your body to handle it. If you can tough it out, you'll feel cold, but you won't be significantly hurt.

- [DC13] Endure it.
- [DC12] Recall Gleipnir to protect yourself.

This is going to hurt, but you can't recall Gleipnir and sacrifice everything you've done up to this point.

You close your eyes and tuck your arms in to keep yourself warm. The cold descends upon you and you can feel your lips crack; if your eyes were open, you'd probably be blinded immediately.

The cold lasts for several seconds before the Wendigo's attack expires. Your body slowly warms itself up again, but it's going to take some time before you're not on the verge of hypothermia.

Unfortunately, you don't have that kind of time.

You open your eyes and take stock of the situation. Natsumi and Orianne are both fine thanks to their Relics, and while you can't see Selene - you'll have to fix that somehow - you're confident she's fine as well. You get back on your feet and prepare your counterattack.

- [DC12] Have Orianne take the lead for a coordinated attack.
- [DC13] Distract the Wendigo so Selene can attack it.

"Attack from its left flank." You speak through chattering teeth and run towards the Wendigo's side as fast as you can. "We need to draw its attention away for Selene."

"That is much easier said than done," Natsumi says, shivering as much as you are, "but I will follow you."

"Whatever it takes to win." Orianne grips her sword tighter and follows after you.

You circle around, and the Wendigo follows your movements with its eyes. Suddenly, its arm lashes out in your direction. Before the creature's hand can reach you, a Silver Arrow shoots through the side of its head. This would be a fatal blow to a living target, but the Wendigo is an entirely different matter.

However, the creature is now aware of Selene and the danger she poses. It turns in her direction her and stomps towards the forest.

- [DC9] Grapple the Wendigo personally.
- [DC12] Have Natsumi and Orianne help you herd it away from the forest.

"Don't let it go into the forest!"

It's not like you'd have difficulty following it, but Selene is almost defenseless, and you can't allow her to get injured.

"Follow my lead," Orianne says. She raises Joyeuse and a golden light bursts from the sword.

Natsumi and you accelerate and unconsciously move to cut the Wendigo's advance. The creature tries to swat you out of the way, but it can't attack without leaving itself open to a counter from one of you. Inch by inch, it's forced back away from the forest.

- [DC11] Press the attack with the three of you.
- [DC15] Charge in and attack the Wendigo alone.
- [DC13] Create an opening for Natsumi to attack.

"Natsumi, switch places with me," you say. "I'll make it overextend itself. Strike when it's off balance."

"Be very careful, Eamon," Natsumi says. "The timing will have to be very precise."

"Yeah, I know."

You and Natsumi run across each other and switch places in the formation. The Wendigo tracks you both, and you know you won't be able to bait it.

So you tug at Gleipnir a little to catch the Wendigo's attention.

It works. The beast twitches a few times and realizes you're the reason why it's so weak right now. It glares at you, eyes burning red, and leans forward to slam its hand down. You barely manage to move away in time.

Natsumi unleashes an upward slash that cuts through the Wendigo's neck. It's not enough for a decapitating blow, but it's still a deep cut.

The Wendigo's body slackens and it crashes to the ground.

- [DC12] Tear the Wendigo apart with Gleipnir.
- [DC8] Let Natsumi finish her strike.
- [DC8] Give Orianne the killing blow.

You snap your fingers.

Up. Down. Right. Left. Inside. Outside.

Gleipnir rips the Wendigo apart in every direction. Entwined as it is with the creature's inside, the thing is in thousands of pieces by the time your Relic has wrapped itself back around your arm.

Orianne and Natsumi simply stare at the carnage, and Selene steps out of her perch to join you.

A cold wind blows over, spreading the smell of blood and rotten meat. Even so, you can feel the air getting warmer and warmer now that the Wendigo's influence is over.

- "Well, that was easy."
- "I can't believe that worked."
- "Time to party."

You look down at the mess the four of you made out of the Wendigo.

"I can't believe that worked."

"I must say that I expected this to be a little more exciting," Natsumi says. "This feels quite ordinary."

"Maybe it means we're getting used to victory," Orianne says. "We have been doing very well since the Commander put us together."

"Of course this mad brute couldn't withstand my divine might." Selene snorts and tosses her hair back. "A huntress always catches her prey."

Well, you might as well let Selene have her fun. After all, this is a pretty big occasion.

"God-damn, I never thought I'd see that."

Startled, you spin around and see Francis standing behind all of you. You hadn't noticed the approach of the Vimana.

"I came by when I noticed the weather changes," Francis says. "Let the Commander know, too. She says the after-action report can wait, if you want."

You climb onto the Vimana and return to New York within seconds. You're all unharmed, but your uniforms are ripped a little and you, particularly, are covered in the black gunk that spilled out of the Wendigo.

"It looks like we have some time to relax," Orianne says. "What do you want to do?"

- "I need a shower. Again."
- "I need a drink. Again"
- "I'm going back to sleep."

"I don't know about the rest of you," you say. "But I need a drink. Again."

"I'm right with you, bro." Francis starts to throw his arm around your shoulder, but stops when he realizes how filthy you are. "Just… you might want to clean up a bit first."

"Yeah, I figure this uniform is going in the trash," you say. "Maybe the fire. What about the rest of you?"

"I need a shower," Orianne says.

"I think I will go back to sleep," Natsumi says. "Today was a little too much excitement for me, and I still feel tired."

"I suppose I can join you for a bit," Selene says. "You may thank me for my generosity."

You do that. Or not.

"Drinks it is," you say. "I'll see the rest of you in the morning."

You stop by your quarters long enough to change into something else and throw your ruined clothes away. They might be salvageable, but you don't want to inflict that kind of pain on whoever does the laundry around here.

At the bar, Francis has generously bought everyone a round of Guinness.

"Cheers, mate," he says. "Figured you'd like to have a taste of the old country."

"You're a saint, Francis." You take a long sip and let it go down. "Damn, that hit the spot."

"This tastes weird," Selene says. It's probably the most normal thing you've heard her say.

- "Beer isn't for everyone."
- "That means you need to get used to it."
- "That's heretic talk."

"That means you need to get used to it."

You pat Selene on the back and give her a bit of encouragement to get her going.

"That's the spirit," Francis says. "You need to loosen up a little if you don't want to burn out."

You drink your beers, order more and talk about… everything, really.

"I guess this isn't so bad, once you get used to it," Selene says.

"Are you talking about the beer, or talking to other people?" You ask.

"Both?" She shrugs and teeters on her chair as she takes another sip. "Do you do this kind of thing often?"

"Used to." You stare into your beer morosely. "I had to stop before my transfer. I didn't have the company anymore, and drinking alone is just pathetic."

"Is this about how you got dumped?" Francis grins and pokes your arm. "It is, isn't it? 'Cause you dumped! Hahahaha!"

"You're about to get into a fight with a drunken Irishman, Francis."

"… nevermind."

You are Eamon O'Byrne. You command Gleipnir. Together with your squad, you just killed one of the baddest motherfuckers on Earth. Right now, you're rewarding yourself with an endless chain of Guinness.

It's a pretty damn good reward. Hopefully, the Commander will be able to top it tomorrow morning.

And that is all for today. The next thread of Relic Quest will take place Sunday August 14th at 7PM Eastern. As a reminder, I will also be running Beleaguered Prince Quest Friday August 12th, also at 7PM Eastern.

As always, thanks for playing and good night.
