You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Princess Reagan mac Connaught is very enthusiastic about your upcoming nuptials, especially the part where all her political opponents die somehow. In fact, she's brought quite a bit of literature from Olstren to help you make that happen.

"I don't have any military might of my own aside from a few guards," she says, "but I did cultivate a few spies here and there. This should be very useful to us."

Olstren is roughly divided into six regions: Olstren proper in the centre, Machain along the southern border with Gwyrddarfordir, Scathn in the northeast, Ulainn in the northwest, Danargh in the east along the Svekkan border and Nogren along the western coast.

"Olstren conquered and united the other five regions several centuries ago," Reagan explains. "They were once ruled by their own Kings, with the ruler of Olstren as the High King, but the rulers of the five regions used their titles and authority to challenge the High King, so they were eventually reduced to duchies, with my family as sole ruler. The commoners identify with Olstren for the most part, but the nobles still prioritize their regions. Each wants to claim Olstren itself in order to achieve hegemony over the other regions."

That certainly explains Reagan's current difficulties. The nobles were never truly brought to heel, and now that they feel themselves strong and the royal family weak, they want to claim power.

"What about relations between the regions?" You ask Reagan. "What kind of alliances could they make?"

"There's too much competition between Scathn and Ulainn for them to ally with each other, and the distance means they have no common interests with Machain," Reagan explains. "Danargh and Nogren are the most likely to seek support from other regions since they have contact with the north and south, but their options are still limited."

"If we're lucky, the other regions will let Machain make the first move to test things out," Olwen says. "So long as we can secure Gwyrddarfordir's border and use Machain as a cushion, a lengthy war against Olstren isn't out of the question. The problem is actually the central region. We could use it to launch attacks everywhere else, but that works both ways. The remaining four regions could attack us as well."

"I must say, I didn't expect you to be so enthusiastic about this, Lady Olwen," Reagan says. "I was afraid you would be more jealous than anything."

Olwen shrugs. "I'm just a consort," she says. "Since you’re his highness' wife, I don't mind considering you my wife as well. Besides, I have my own house to look after. It's not strictly necessary, but if I can get more land for my family's vassals, it'll make things a little easier."

"The conquest of Olstren is a likely outcome," you say, "but it's not an urgent matter. Still, I'll keep this in mind while I make my… other decisions."

The obvious thing to do would be to ask your father to give you control of Mynydffern so you can use it as a base to attack Olstren, but there are benefits to establishing a principality elsewhere. Unfedgiat and Ailgiat are both wealthy trade ports and would allow you to keep an eye on Svekka and Rosea, while Cyfoethmor is far enough that it would be impossible for Olstren to attack you, and Degfford is a blank slate you could develop however you want.

There's also the question of your second consort and your two concubines. You'll have to make a decision about that as well, and soon.

You expect your mother will be quite pleased with the way things are going. She loves your sister Nessa dearly - you think - but Reagan is the kind of daughter Queen Margrete always wanted.

"We can talk more tomorrow," Reagan says. "The celebrations will be ongoing, yes?"

"The palace will host a banquet tomorrow to celebrate the wedding night," Olwen says. "It's not as crass as it sounds, to be honest. The festivities throughout the city will last a few days longer, two weeks at most, then it'll be back to business as you usual."

"You know," Reagan sits on traces a finger along her cleavage, "I wouldn't mind if we had our wedding night as well. I trust your highness not to go back on your word."

"I'm certainly up for it." You boss your jacket aside and start unbuttoning your shirt. "Olwen, I don't suppose you have any ribbons on you or anything?"

"I'll think of something," she says as she starts taking off her dress. "I'm definitely going to need a chair and a towel though. You said you wanted me to watch, your highness?"

"I'm… not quite sure how I should be taking this," Reagan admits. "I assumed his highness had vigorous interests, but I didn't think they would be so intense."

"I prefer it forceful," Olwen explains. "If my ass isn't as red as a tomato by the time his highness is done with it, his heart simply isn't into it."

"We can figure out the details as we go." You sit down next to Reagan and kiss her; she responds by playfully biting. "If we're doing this, we should at least enjoy ourselves."

You wake up the next morning sore and more tired than you were before going to sleep. Perhaps you overdid it a little.

It was totally worth it though.

"Good morning." Olwen rests her head on your left shoulder and runs a finger along your chest. "Last night was incredibly embarrassing. I want to do it again with more people."

"That makes at least two of us." You wrap your arms around Olwen and Reagan, who's sleeping on your right, and pull them closer. Reagan mumbles something in response, but she isn't awake yet. "We might need a bigger bed though."

"I'm not sure a bed will do," Olwen says. "Maybe we can use the bathroom? It'd be easier to clean up."

"I'll make sure to find a discreet architect if we ever need one."

You stay like this, just staring at the ceiling, for several minutes until Princess Reagan starts to wake up.

"Good morning, your highness," she says. "For a moment, I was afraid I'd had that dream again. I'm very happy to see you really are here."

"I'm very glad to hear you've been thinking about me, Reagan," you say. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I rode for a thousand miles," she says. "This makes up for it though."

As enjoyable as this situation is, you still have work to do. You need to choose a second consort and two concubines before you can do anything else, and your mother will want to hear about Reagan.

You only need one more concubine, so it shouldn't take you much longer to come to a decision, but Eleri should be in the palace and you have to greet her anyway, so you could use it as an opportunity to invite your other commoner acquaintances for breakfast.

I agree on Degfford, it's also a blank slate, apparently. The downsides are probably it doesn't allow for many avenues of attack into Olstren (being so close to the mountains) and that it probably isn't as developed as some of the other choices.

Since Eleri's here anyway, you might as well invite your prospective concubines over for breakfast.

"I need to talk with Myrddin about a few things," you say. "Olwen, can you bring to… let's go with the orchard for breakfast? I'll invite some company."

"Sure, that's fine," Olwen says. "Picking the next woman for your collection?"

"I don't quite think of it in those terms," you say, "but that is the gist of it, yes."

"We'll be down soon," Reagan says. "I just want to stay in bed a little longer."

You get out of bed and look for your clothes. Reagan slinks into your old spot and pulls Olwen into a very distracting naked hug. So long as they're getting along…

The clothes are all wrinkled, but there are no awkward stains or tears that would be difficult to explain. You quickly get dressed and go to Myrddin's office.

You knock on the door once to make sure you're not interrupted and enter when Myrddin tells you to.

"Hello, Myrrdin," you say. "You'll be happy to know you got everything you wanted. Also, we need to come up with a plan to invade Olstren, and I'd like you to invite Esyllt, Nia, Isla and Delyth for breakfast in the palace orchard."

"I see you're committed." Myrddin grins and tosses some of his documents aside. "I'll send the invitation out immediately, along with carriages. As for Olstren, that's going to be a little more complicated."

"We have time," you say, "but I don't want to waste any of it."

As messy as your love life is, it becomes much clearer when you think of it in terms of military objectives. You need to defend yourself against Olstren, and to do that, you need allies and advisors. Simple.

The next stop is Eleri. She should join you for breakfast, and you did leave her hanging last night, even though your mother was around to keep her company. You have no idea where she is, but your mother's rooms should be a good start.

The servants are busy cleaning the place, and you carefully step around them to avoid getting in their way. One of them helpfully tells you that your mother is currently in her study with a guest. The study's door is open, and you can hear your mother and Eleri chatting inside.

"The king at the time liked poetry," your mother says, "so playwrights adopted the style to get his patronage. That's what eventually popularized the opera."

"Really?" Eleri asks. "I heard it had something to do with Vitland?"

"More or less," your mother answers. "A bard who'd travelled across the ocean to Vitland was saved by the king's army upon his return, and decided to honour the king in the style of Vitland's battle hymns."

Ah, they're talking about King Cwyllin. You're aware of his eccentricities, but you're more familiar with his tendency to use naval raids to support land troops. It's an art that requires extreme precision.

You knock on the door to catch their attention. "Good morning, mother, Eleri," you say. "I hate to disturb you, but I'm having some guests for breakfast, and I was hoping Eleri would join me since I wasn't able to entertain her properly last night."

"I would be delighted, your highness." Eleri lifts her skirt and curtseys.

"I won't take up anymore of your time then, dear," your mother says. "Unless you'd like me to join you for breakfast as well, Meirion?"

"That would be delightful, mother." You arranged your own marriage. You're obviously capable of doing this without her. You're just choosing to bring her along. "We should take the long way around though. It might take a while for everyone together."

"That's fine, dear," your mother says. "I'd like to get Eleri's opinion on some of the palace's paintings."

In hindsight, you should have wasted time before picking Eleri up. On the positive side, you start to remember all those childhood history lessons you took, and your mother knows when to move from one painting to the next. She also carefully leads you towards the orchard; by the time you get to the breakfast table, your guests are only just arriving, and the servants are beginning to set the plates.

"Prince Meirion, you finally join us," Reagan smiles playfully at you. "For a moment, I thought you'd forgotten about us."

"I'm afraid that's my fault," Queen Margrete says. "I wanted to walk around the palace for a bit."

"The palace has some very exquisite works of art," Eleri says. "It's like a path along the kingdom's history."

"Isn't it normal for the palace to have treasures?" Ilsa asks. "All the nobles I've met had collections of paintings in their houses."

"Quite a bit of the palace's is commissioned by the temples," Delyth explains. "It honours victories, and allows new artists to make a name for themselves."

"I'm afraid I don't know much about art," Esyllt says as she takes a seat. "I can estimate the value of a painting out of habit, but I'm afraid I can't appreciate it much. My father prefers calculated displays of wealth over blatant opulence."

"I tried painting and sculpting when I was younger so I could get used to the work of enchantment," Nia says. "I enjoyed experimenting, but I can't say I made anything artistically pleasing."

You all sit down around the table and began to eat breakfast. You should decide what you want to talk about the most first.

"I understand what you mean, your highness," Esyllt says. "My father expects me to inherit his business, but I'd like to leave my own mark as well. I've been thinking of ways to increase our business with neighbouring kingdoms, but it's proven difficult; there are too many factors that simply can't be predicted. Beyond that… I suppose I'd like to control markets, instead of just exploiting them. I can do it a little already, but introducing new demands is much more difficult than controlling demand completely."

Everyone needs money, and if you can control who has it, that's even better. After all, hitting supply lines is a major part of war.

"That sounds like a lot of work," Isla opines. "Personally, I'd be fine if I could just cultivate rare plants in any climate. The Alchemists' Guild has a number of greenhouses, but it's not just the weather we need to account for. There's also sunlight, the quality of the soil and all sorts of other things. Given the resources it would take, we haven't be able to get much done."

Isla's plans don't sound as impressive as Esyllt's, but that doesn't make them less important. If you could obtain a supply of medicinal herbs and alchemical reagents all year round, it would be a significant boon to Gwyrddarfordir's alchemy. It's a very… reliable goal would be the best way to put it, you suppose.

"I just want to know more about Svekkan industry," Nia says. "Standardized, mass-produced parts would allow the Enchanters' Guild to expand and accelerate training. We could have major workshops in every city, and even a large number of villages. It would revolutionize the whole kingdom, given enough time."

You've heard numerous things about Svekkan industrialization, and not just about the problems it caused between the merchants and the nobility. Nia's right; it would greatly expand Gwyrddarfordir's military and economic capabilities.

"I'm fine just working for the temples," Delyth says. "After all, it's my duty as a chaplain to support his highness as well as the rest of the kingdom, and our hierarchy is mostly there for administrative purposes. Even if I became in charge, it wouldn't change much. Although I suppose I would like to see more standardized training, perhaps a dedicated military school."

There are some military institutions around the kingdom, often associated with the temple, but they're not that intensive. Out of practical necessity, they're only good for maintaining a village militia, and while nobles and career soldiers can get better training, offering a better education to all soldiers would likely increase the overall quality of the army.

"I've been thinking about that as well," Eleri says. "I saw a Rosean university once, when I was traveling with my parents. Gwyrddarfordir has some impressive schools for the arts, but it doesn't have any dedicated centres of learning. I think we could benefit greatly from an institution devoted to the arts and sciences."

Such a centre of culture would attract artists, merchants and educated individuals suitable for work in the government. It would certainly make it easier for the royal family to recruit advisors, and it would strengthen the kingdom's culture.

Overall, their ambitions certainly fit within your plans, but you still need to confirm something…

Wife: Reagan [Sov. and Int.]
Consorts: Olwen [Sov. and Mil.], and Ceri [Dil. and Mer.]
Concubines: Esyllt [Mer. and Int.] and Eleri [Dil. and Int.]

Combined, that gives us a 20% discount of Sovereign, a 30% discount of Intrigue, a 20% discount on Dilettante, a 20% discount on Merchant, and a 10% discount on Military. All-in-all a good spread imo.

"That goes without saying, your highness," Esyllt says. "It's only natural for people to work together when it benefits them, even if they have to compete in other circumstances."

The other ladies nod in agreement.

"Cooperation is the basis of the Enchanters' Guild," Nia says. "I assume it's the same for the alchemists."

"Of course it is," Isla says. "Knowledge is passed down form master to journeyman, and we often need to share the workload. Cooperation is important."

"It's impossible to organize a play alone," Eleri says. "The actors and the rest of the staff are important."

"I've spent some time with armies," Delyth says. "I understand the importance of cooperation and coordination."

That was the last hurdle you could think of. You can't ask them directly at the moment, but you can at least choose your concubines now and decide how you're going to approach them later.

Isla is a respected member of the Alchemists' Guild. The arcane arts are not your strongest point, so she could cover for you and help you learn what you need to know. Naturally, her services as an alchemist would also be available to you. If she achieves her goal of cultivating rare herbs in any climate or season, the economic and military benefits would be significant.

Isla would support your Alchemy and Merchant skills.

Nia is a skilled enchanter, another of your weak points. Her interest in mass-production seems to be in line with current production trends, and would allow Gwyrddarfordir to maintain its position is the top purveyor of enchanted items on the continent, among other financial and military benefits, or even mundane civil projects.

Nia would support your Enchantment and Merchant skills.

Your first choice is Eleri. She's someone who can escort you to parties, she's cultured and her plans for a university have some potential; you'd like to see if they can come to fruition.

It's going to take some tact though. She was upset when she thought you were only after her body, and while her behaviour since then suggests she's interested in you, you don't want to do anything stupid.

That leaves your second choice.

Okay, I can actually work with this thanks to something I came up with half an hour ago.

Pick either Esyllt or Delyth for the skill bonus.
>>
We're going to need Esyllt more than we need Delyth. We already have Olwen to help with military affairs, plus we aren't too shabby at it ourselves. Delyth cannot provide anything more tangible beyond that. Esyllt can hook us up with shekels, plus help us develop whatever town we claim as our own. Plus she is the one merchant you CAN trust.

The second choice is more difficult. Unfortunately for Nia and Ilsa, you haven't taken the time to work with them much in the past, and their skills are peripheral to your interests.

You're much more familiar with Delyth and Esyllt, and you believe both of them would accept your proposal. Furthermore, their skills would be immensely useful to your future goal.

Myrddin warned you that two concubines would be the reasonable limit - and you know he'll never let you hear the end of this - but there's no conflict between Delyth and Esyllt. You'll have to manage your time carefully, but you should be able to care for both of them.

You've made your decision - or didn't, depending on one's perspective - so you'll just have to deal with the consequences.

Like how you're going to ask them.

You decide to speak with them one at a time. It'll take longer, but you'd like to do this properly. You just need to find a way to split them up so you can speak privately.

"Why don't you all stay to enjoy the rest of the official celebration?" Queen Margrete asks. "I can give you some of my dresses, if you need them. Consider it compensation for your troubles."

Your mother can read your mind.

In hindsight, it's not that shocking.

"Since your majesty is offering, I won't refuse your offer," Esyllt says. Then she mumbles something about bust sizes under her breath.

"I'm afraid I still have some delicate business to discuss with the prince," Reagan says. "We'll join you in a bit."

"Of course, Princess Reagan," Queen Margrete says. "Take your time."

The girls all follow your mother's directions, which leaves you with Reagan and Olwen.

"The have a really pitiable look on your face, your highness," Olwen says. "What did you decide?"

"I need Delyth, Eleri and Esyllt if I want this to work," you say. "Which means I have to ask all three of them. I hope that won't be a problem?"

"Delyth and Eleri are good girls," Olwen says.

"And I quite enjoyed the time I spent with Esyllt," Reagan says. "I won't begrudge your decision."

That's one problem avoided. Now you just need to avoid Myrddin and decide who to approach first.

"I need to go talk to them," you say. "Whatever you do, don't tell Myrddin."

"Of course not," Olwen says. "I want to see where this ship wrecks."

You slowly walk back to your mother's wing of the castle to give the ladies time to get ahead of you so you don't catch them in a group.

"Delyth, Eleri and Esyllt are in the second, third and seventh room," your mother says as soon as you arrive. "They're all changing, so enjoy the view. Just don't enjoy it too much or you'll take too long."

"Wh - You could not possibly have known that!"

"Oh, Meirion." Your mother smiles and ruffles your hair. "Who else were you going to ask to become your concubine? I am surprised that you would approach all three of them, but none by who you're interested in."

You sigh and dodge out of your mother's grasp.

"Thank you, mother."

You knock on Eleri's door. "Eleri, it's me," you call out. "I was wondering if we could talk for a bit."

"O-of course, your highness," Eleri answers. "Please come in."

You open the door and enter. Eleri is standing behind a partition, so you can't see anything.

"Are you all right?"

There's a long silence. You lean against the door and wait until Eleri steps out.

"I don't know," she says, "but thanks for asking me that."

She hasn't changed into her dress yet, but you've already seen her breasts, so this isn't much in comparison.

"You're going to ask me to become your concubine, aren't you?"

"That is my plan," you say, "if it's something you're interested in."

Eleri runs the back of her head and paces around nervously.

"I was so angry when I thought you were just after my body," she says, "but then I started thinking it wouldn't be so bad, even looking forward to it a little and now… now I'm scared and I don't know what I should do."

"I need your skills, Eleri," you say. "I have things to do, goals to accomplish, and I need someone like you to support me."

Eleri nods slowly. "I think I can do that," she says. "Just… at night… you have other women, right? is it okay if I just watch at first?"

"Whatever makes you more comfortable," you say. "Olwen says she likes you, so you can talk to her about it if you want."

"I think I'll do that," Eleri says. "Thank you, your highness."

You exit the room and shut the door behind you. All things considered, that went well. It might take a while for Eleri to get comfortable with things, but that's not a problem.

You decide to see Delyth and knock on her door next.

"Delyth, there's something I need to talk to you about."

"Oh, of course. Come in, your highness."

You open the door and step in. There's a partition, so -

Oh, Delyth isn't using the partition. Fortunately, your will is cold, unyielding iron, so this isn't enough to distract you. Besides, this isn't much different than the swimsuit you saw her in once.

"What did you need to talk about, your highness?"

"I need you to help me conquer Olstren," you say. "Eventually."

"… shouldn't you wait until after Princess Reagan leaves before talking about that?"

"It's mostly her idea," you say. "We're still working on the details, but we're probably going to elope in the next few days, which will lead to a succession crisis and civil war once the King of Olstren dies or steps down. The point is, I need competent concubines at my side to help me."

"Oh, why didn't you just say so?" Delyth's face brightens up. She seems very enthusiastic about this. "It's long been a chaplain's duty to accompany members of the royal family to military excursion and bear an heir in case something went wrong. It never happened to the main bloodline, but several second princes were able to preserve their lineage that way. Not that you would need to."

"Thank you for the vote of confidence," you say. "Would you like to move into the palace?"

"I would love to!" Delyth says. "I'd just need a day or two to find a replacement for my duties."

"Thank you, Delyth," you say. "I promise I'll look after you."

That was significantly easier than talking with Eleri. You go to Esyllt's room last and knock on the door.

"Come in, your highness," Esyllt says. "I've been waiting for you."

>"How did you know I was coming?"

"I assume you also know why I'm here."

You walk into the room and yep, there's Esyllt in her underwear. You're three for three at this point, and they day isn't over.

Esyllt sits on a desk and crosses her arms.

"You're looking for a concubine," Esyllt says. "Since you didn't invite Princess Agda or Archduchess Aleksandra for breakfast, I assume you chose to marry Princess Reagan. I'm… interested in such an arrangement, so long as you can make it profitable for me."

That's certainly a straightforward way of doing things.

"Reagan has some problems in Olstren," you say. "The easiest way for those problems to be resolved is for me to stake a claim to the throne and conquer the kingdom. I'm going to need money, and I'm going to need merchants doing business in Olstren after everything is settled."

Esyllt considers your offer for a moment. It's a very brief moment.

"That does sound worth my body," she says, "and if I'm going to be someone's woman eventually anyway, I don't mind being yours."

"As always, it's a pleasure doing business with you, Esyllt," you say. "We can go over our plans later."

Once you've chosen your second concubine. You're really looking forward to tonight though.
>>
>>468288
And that's finally it for tonight. I really wanted to get Waifu Wars II out of the way tonight. I don't want to rush the pacing, but juggling so many characters is just too difficult, so I do want to move things forward to trim the cast down a little. I think we'll be able to wrap Part II up after one or two more threads, depending on how things go.

Anyway, next Beleaguered Prince Quest will take place on Friday August 19th at 7PM EDT. I will also be running Relic Quest on Sunday August 14th, also at 7PM.

Goodnight and thanks for playing.
