You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You get the feeling that you're going to wake up more tired than you were before going to sleep for the next few days. Or weeks. Or months.

Totally worth it though. Sure, making the whole thing a done deal before you smoothed out the details and sold it to your family was probably not your best idea, but it's nothing a few lies and creative truths won't fix. Besides, an official announcement might give your uncle time to plan something, and that's completely unacceptable.

Eleri and Olwen are curled up to your left and right. The former is still uncertain about this whole arrangement, so she's wearing a nightgown. Olwen is… not.

"Where's everyone?"

"Seren, Delyth and the Princess are taking a bath," Olwen answers, "and Esyllt woke up first so she could look over the finances. I think she's sitting on the balcony."

You already cleaned up last night - you didn't want to make a mess in the bed - but another bath won't kill you and you need to plan your next move with Reagan, or you could talk business with Esyllt until the others are ready.

You could even just stay in bed for a little longer, as scandalous as it sounds.

>To the bath. You need to talk to Reagan.
>To the balcony. You want to see how Esyllt is doing.
>The bed is fine. You should wait for Eleri to wake up at least.

"Baths it is." You disentangle yourself, taking care not to wake Eleri up. "I should take to Reagan."

"Don't get yourself too dirty." Olwen moves into your spot to hug Eleri. "Our other royal guests will be leaving today, and you should probably see them off."

"I'll make the time," you say. "I suspect I'll need all the allies I can get, especially in Svekka."

You leave your clothes in the changing room before stepping into the bathroom. It's large by normal standards, but it's a little too cramped for what you use it for. You'll have to keep that in mind when you renovate Degfford's manor.

Delyth is helping Reagan wash her hair, while Seren is just soaking in the water.

"Good morning, ladies. I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Of course not, your highness," Reagan says. "We were just talking about you, actually. In extremely vivid detail."

"Last night was quite enjoyable," Seren says. "I look forward to doing it again." Her cheeks flush red and she sinks a little deeper into the water.

"I'm happy I'll finally able to fulfill one of my most important duties as a representative of the faith," Delyth says. "Although temple records of the details did not quite align with reality."

"There's no accounting for taste," you say as you step into the bath. "So long as Reagan and Olwen are enjoying themselves, I certainly won't complain."

Reagan pouts and playfully slaps your arm. "I know you enjoy it as much as I do," she says. "It's easy to tell."

You imagine it is, but this isn't why you're here.

"I'd like to leave for Degfford as soon as possible," you say, "which means we'll need to come up with something to say to the royal family to prevent a scandal. I wanted to know if you had any ideas."

"I'd rather make a scene," Reagan says. "I learned to cry at will years ago. It should be fine if I get the Court's pity, right?"

A public announcement would probably draw sympathy and stifle undesirable rumours, but there is something to be said about subtlety. You're not sure if you're willing to make your personal life so public.

"Okay, let's put on a show," you say. "Garnering sympathy isn't usually how I do things, but that doesn't mean I can't try."

"I have most of the story figured out already," Reagan says. "'The nobles at home want to force me into an arranged, loveless marriage and I'm plagued by a curse that slays all my intended, but his highness has courageously professed his love to me, and we wish to declare our love for each other and be married, even if it means we must renounce our position.' Would that work on your father?"

"Not long-winded enough," you say, "but it's a start. Maybe if you cried a few times and I chimed in. Talked about justice a lot."

You'll need to throw in some excuse to take over Degfford as well. Perhaps you can claim it as a quiet spot where the two of you can live together without being disturbed. At least you're certain your sister Nesta won't want it for her own.

Then you'll have to figure out how to tell your father about your agreement with Seren. You doubt he'll notice the decrease in taxes - House Caunys isn't that wealthy in the first place - but you won't embezzle from the Crown, at least not for something like this.

"What about the two of you?" You ask Delyth and Seren. "Are you feeling well?"

"I'm quite fine," Delyth says. "It's no worse than saddle soars."

Not quite how you would like to hear it describes, but if Delyth says she's fine…

"It pinched a little, but it doesn't really hurt much," Seren says. "It was well worth a little inconvenience, your highness."

You dry yourself off and toss your towel aside so you can change into more formal clothes. You're not just walking around naked so you can show off.

Eleri's squeal of surprise is entertaining though. She ducks right back under the covers once she sees you, although you don't know what the big deal is. It's not like you've got any shame left at this point. Olwen gives you a mock glare and starts coaxing your concubine back out.

You chuckle and straighten out your uniform. "You don't need to be so nervous," you say.

"I know," Eleri says as she pulls the blankets down. "It's just still a little… shocking, I suppose."

"I'm sure you'll get used to it." You smile at her and sit at your desk. "Until then, I can get you a separate bed, if you want."

"That won't be necessary, your highness," Eleri says. "I don't mind getting used to it."

The balcony door opens and Esyllt teeters in, leaning on a wall with one hand for balance. Her face is pale, but she keeps her expression blank.

"Good morning, your highness." Esyllt drops the documents she'd been reading on your desk. "I've been looking through some of your investments. I don't see why you need to own so many inns and brothels, but I noted some suggestions for you."

"I need information as much as money," you say, "so the inns and brothels are necessary." You look at her unsteady stance with concern. She's obviously not doing too well. "Is your body all right?"

"My condition is good enough, your highness," Esyllt answers. "It won't impede my work, and I do have work to do."

"You can delegate to Myrddin if you need to." You stand up and offer her your chair. Come to think of it, Esyllt's hips are on the slimmer side, so she might need some additional consideration. "That's why I keep him around."

"I wouldn't want to impose on your advisors, your highness." She sits in your chair and lets out a sigh of relief. "It would be improper."

"I asked you to become my concubine because I need your help." You lean down and kiss her neck from behind. "It wouldn't do for me to make you work while you're unwell."

"I suppose I could use some time to recover from last night." Her tone remains stiff, but you can tell her shoulders have relaxed a little. "I'll write my notes up properly and send them to Myrddin."

"Thanks for your hard work." You kiss Esyllt again and wait for Reagan.

The Princess of Olstren arrives dressed in formal robes. Seren and Delyth follow behind her, but you won't need their help for this. Olwen and Eleri must still be in the bath.

"I'm ready, your highness," Reagan says. "Will you escort me to the throne room?"

"I would love to."

You offer Reagan your arm.

"Isn't that a little too forward?" Despite her reluctance, she takes it anyway.

"Since you wanted to make a performance out of this, why not put in a little extra effort?"

The palace is eerily silent now that all the guests are gone and it's business as usual again, but there are traces of the celebration every here and there; spills, plates, cups, that sort of thing. Your father isn't likely to care much, although you're surprised your mother is letting the staff slip up so much. She must be busy with something else, or perhaps she's still in a festive move.

As you both make your way to the throne room, you come across Aleksandra and Agda, who both notice Reagan hanging off your arm. They don't seem too upset, thankfully.

"I suspected as much since you've been missing for the last few days, but I suppose I'll be returning to Rosea alone," Aleksandra says. "Well, it's not like any of your problems concern me."

"I doubt it'll make you feel any better," you say, "but I've been thinking about finding an excuse to send my sister up to meet your brother. It won't be soon, but perhaps in the future…"

"Princess Nesta is nice enough," Aleksandra says. "I'll make a few suggestions to my brother if the topic comes up."

"Do be careful about Olstren," Princess Agda says. "I doubt they'll let go of their Widow Princess so easily."

"Fortunately," Reagan says, "that decision isn't in their hands, and there's little they can do about it anyway."

"I hope your optimism is well-founded," Agda says. "Although now that I think about it, Svekka and Olstren have gone to war over a few mines in the past, and those mines would make things easier for me right now."

>"I can hardly sell mountains that aren't mine yet."

"I can hardly sell mountains that aren't mine yet," you say. "After all, our optimism might not be so well-founded."

Agda makes a disappointed face, but doesn't press the matter further. You can always get in touch with her when you do get your hands on those mountains.

Aleksandra and Agda enter first to make their heartfelt speeches about the Crown's hospitality and how much they regret having to return to their homes. Your fodder looks like he's paying attention, but you can tell he's either tired or hung over or both. That'll make things easier for you.

You can't help but wonder if your mother planned this for your sake.

Then it's Reagan's turn and she starts her theatrics, playing for pity.

"I was so moved by Gwyrddarfordir's sense of justice…"

"The Crown Prince's dedication to his pure love is an inspiration to us all…"

"If only my kingdom's nobles were as worthy of the title as yours…"

The tears flowing down Reagan's cheeks come faster and faster, and the nobles in the gallery are joining in as well. Your father isn't crying, but you can tell the fire in his blood is heating up.

"Nevertheless, I must return home, a cursed widow even before marriage. Oh, I fear that craven men wish to do me harm, or compel me into a loveless union for the sake of my father's throne. If only I could throw it all away…"

"Damn she is good," Aleksandra whispers quietly. Agda nods in agreement.

Reagan's speech is winding down. There's your chance to step in.

This will require a deft touch. First, you need to appeal your father.

You step forward and speak with a resounding voice.

"Your majesty, it would be unjust to leave the princess to her plight! We cannot allow this matter to pass!"

Princess Reagan makes a show of turning towards your in surprise and smiling warmly at your declaration.

"My son is right!" King Gerad shouts and pounds his throne's armrest. "It would be a disgrace to Gwyrren's legacy to abandon a young maiden in need! Princess Reagan, you may remain in Gwyrddarfordir for as long as you wish! We will defend you, no matter the cost!"

Normally, this would be the part where you're slamming your palm into your forehead and figuring out who needs to be assassinated for the kingdom's prosperity. It's odd to be the one encouraging your father, and it's downright frightening how good Princess Reagan is at going with the flow of things.

"Your majesty, I cannot accept this generosity," she cries. "Even were I to remain here, I would be forced to endure a life of solitude. Who would dare to share their life with me?"

Who should you copy for this? Haul? Nesta? Both?

Yes, a little of both.

"Father, I will answer the princess' call for love! The Crown Prince's marriage has stoked the flames of passion deep within my heart! No matter which misfortunes might come, I will have the courage to face them head-on!"

It helps that all those misfortunes were caused by Reagan, and that you're quite certain she likes you enough to trust you with this.

"Your highness, you mustn't!" Reagan runs to you and clasps her hands over yours, her eyes filled with tears. "I cannot bind you to the destiny that plagues me!"

"No son of my fears a thing like destiny!" The king shouts again and pounds on his other armrest. "If Meirion wishes to claim your hand in marriage, you shall both have my blessing!"

You look Reagan in the eyes and breathe in deep to speak from your stomach as you do when you give speeches before an army. "Princess Reagan, there is no need for you to endure solitude and predation any longer," you say. "No matter what evil plagues you, I shall stand by your side!"

You feel so dirty right now.

You're the only one though. The whole gallery greets your declaration with thunderous applause.

"For both my sons to marry so young." The king wipes a manly tear from his eye. "Time moves forward without looking back."

It's time to stake your claim for Degfford.

"Degfford?" Your father frowns and scratches at his beard. "I suppose there's no harm to it, but it isn't much of a principality."

"I believe it's the most suitable place for me," you say. "If I can improve it, all the better."

King Gerad hesitates a moment longer before nodding in assent. "Very well, from this moment on, Prince Meirion shall be known as the Prince of Degfford. You may assume control of your domain whenever you're ready."

The major hurdles have been taken care of. Now, you just need to slip House Caunys into the deal.

"I don't see anything wrong with that," the King says. "I don't want you to be on your own too soon."

Your new in-laws - can you call your consort's family in-laws? - will be thrilled to know about their tax break.

The show's not over though. Reagan cups your cheek and favours you with a deep kiss to the audience's thunderous applause and your father's equally thunderous laughter.

This whole thing was much more public than you're used to, but it's nice to have to much public support. Being the prince can't all be about back-alley deals and extortion.

Now your marriage is nearly official, and Olstren will learn about it in a few days. Your uncle's operations are still crippled, so you don't need to worry about that, but you do need to prepare for your move to Degfford.

"I need to let the rest of my family know," you tell Reagan. "Can you meet with Myrddin to go over our departure?"

"Of course, your highness," Princess Reagan says. "We'll take care of everything. Go spend some time with your family."

They're not too difficult to find; Queen Margrete wanted to chat with Mair and Prince Haul now that the wedding is over, and your sister Nesta decided to tag along. They're quite pleased to have you come along.

"Did something happen, dear?" Your mother asks. "I heard quite a ruckus from the throne room."

"Princess Reagan was apprehensive about returning home," you explain, "and I, inspired by the Crown Prince's devotion to his heart, decided to give her a reason to stay."

You give a brief account of the events that took place in the throne room. Haul approves of you dedication and maturity, while Nesta smashes her armrests as much as your father did whenever your recollection of things gets particularly heated. Mair doesn't say much, but she does emulate her husband's enthusiasm.

"To think you would leave Aurwain so soon," Nesta says. "I suppose it is for the best."

"We must remain strong for the sake of the people," Haul says. "It's appropriate for Meirion to claim a principality. You should do so as well, sister."

Nesta shakes her head. "Now isn't the time," she says. "There are too many other matters for me to deal with."

"Perhaps you should take a trip to Rosea when you do have time? They have a deep appreciation for military prowess; I'm sure they'd love to have you."

It's a long shot, and you don't have much confidence that Nesta can really pull it off, but stranger things have happened and an alliance with Rosea wouldn't hurt.

>Roll 1d6, best of three.

Well we can always start a war with them so Nesta and the Prince can meet.
>>
You do have one free reroll from MapAnon's work. If you want to use it here, I can let you have the 6 from >>511708

You could just try this again later in different circumstances though.

I vote we try again later. It's unlikely Nesta will marry anytime soon.
>>
>>511723
Let's use it, I think it's important.

I vote to use it.

Use it it is. Incidentally, this bumps your Dilettante skill up to level 3.

"That might not be such a bad idea," Nesta says. "It has been a long time since I left the kingdom, and it was always during a campaign. Peaceful travel would be a nice change of pace."

There, that's your half of the job done. Hopefully, Aleksandra can deliver as well.

Queen Margrete pats the spot next to her and you sit down.

"I'm sure you'll do quite well in Degfford, dear," she says. "I wasn't able to develop it properly, but I'm sure you'll manage so long as you put some effort into." Then she leans in closer so the others can't hear. "Take care of Reagan and Esyllt. They're very good girls. Eleri isn't quite on par with them yet, but she has potential. She just needs to realize everything is a stage and she'll fit right in."

"Thank you, mother." You smile and pat the Queen's arm. "I'll make sure they can achieve their goals."

Finally, you have a city of your own to rule. You just need to figure out how you're going to use it to take over a country.

And that's all for today. Next Friday, Beleaguered Prince Quest moves on to Part 3.

As a reminder, I'll also be running Relic Quest Sunday at 7PM EDT.

Goodnight and thanks for playing.
