You keep your eyes on the pair, sticking to the shadow that your hiding place produces. Alma looks winded, her chest heaves as she struggles to catch her breath. That trick must have taken a lot out of her. Rei sets her down on a curb, letting the blonde haired girl rest. Rei frowns at her boss, before carefully checking her surroundings. You push yourself behind the concrete strut. It doesn’t seem like she’s noticed you yet. Her hand goes to the revolver on her hip, resting on it’s grip. She looks back down at the gasping Alma.

“We should call a cab.” Alma shakes her head frantically.

“Dunno if there are more idiots waiting in the wings. Cab’ll take too long to get here. Don’t wanna stay in one place for too long. Help me up.” Rei grabs her employer by the wrist before pulling to her feet. Alma trails behind Rei by a bit. Now's your chance. Time to snag that folder. Alma’s your priority here. You don’t want her teleporting that folder back to her before you get a chance to look it over. You step out from the shadows with the rest of your team. Alma hasn’t taken notice of you, but Rei’s sharp eyes have.

“Get back!” The Jap shoves Alma behind herself, and levels her revolver with your forehead in the time it takes for you to blink. She’s fast. Alma chuckles from behind her bodyguard.

“Sh-shoulda known that there was somethin’ fishy about you from the get go, Vicky.” She spits the name out. Rei narrows her eyes at the four of you. Josie and Diane move to circle around the pair. The street you’re all standing on is as quiet as a tomb. Alma finally breaks the silence.
‘Well, are you going to take me in? Or are you going to kill me? Either way, can we hurry this up?”

“Neither, Alma. Just gimmie that folder, and we can all go home.” She glances back at the folder before laughing again, louder this time.

“No can do Vicky, Hexenkraft doesn’t take failure well y’know. This’ll be our last job for them too. Can’t be screwing up now”

They are probably still going to hand over Erika if they get the chance, maybe we need to show her that she can't just do whatever she likes with no repercussions.
Also what's in the folder? Is it just some records of hexencrafts local operations?

You continue staring her down Alma. Rei cocks the hammer on her revolver back. You can practically see the tension in the air. Things might get real ugly really quickly if you don;t manage to defuse this situation. You continue trying to appeal to Alma. Rei’s eyes are on Erika, looking at her like a hungry wolf at it’s prey. Erika regards the mercenary with a icy stare of her own.

“What did I tell you, Alma. Working with the Hexenkraft can only mean bad things for you. I thought you were smarter.” Alma’s face softens slightly as you speak. You can only hope that you’re actually getting through to her, and this isn’t some kind of trick. She glances at the folder in her hands.

“I-I thought I could outplay them. I’m smarter than a bunch of Krauts. And this is my home turf.” She stomps her foot against the ground, like an impudent child.

“It isn’t fair! I’m supposed to be in control!” Rei glances back at her boss, concern written across her face.

“Alma, calm down. I’ll get you out of this. We’re going to get rich together, remember?” She doesn’t seem to hear her companion talk. You approach Alma slowly, Rei trains her revolver at you, ready to blow your brains out across the pavement. Alma raises a hand, and Rei stands down. She doesn’t look happy to do so.

“I-I don’t know what to do...” She murmurs. It’s odd to see her in such a vulnerable state, especially after watching her butcher those gangsters with their bullets only a few minutes earlier.

“Well, you could give me that folder, for starters.” She looks at it, and then back at you.

“And what happens when they find out that we didn’t do what they wanted?”

“The Bureau will take care of that. And if anyone wants to get to you, they’ll have to get through me first.”

Josie grinds her teeth against each other.

“Boss, she’s a criminal, we can’t let her off the hook th-” You shush her nosily. You can’t have Josie ruining your chances of swaying her.

“She might be a criminal, but she still doesn’t deserve to be tortured by Hexenkraft.”

Being with her sends a positive message, that we care about her and won't abandon her. Meanwhile, being at the bureau gives us a lot more security just in case the Hexencraft tries to come after her. We can also get started on processing her and questioning her (not interrogating, we want to be as friendly as possible to try and sway her permanently onto her side).

“Don’t worry, the Bureau headquarters are the most fortified building in all of New York!” You try assuage the pair’s worries about this. The Hexenkraft would have to be absolutely nuts to attempt to hit your center of command. No way it’s gonna happen. Nope. You’d argue that it’s the safest place in all of the Northeast. You place a hand on Alma’s shoulder, and grip it tightly. Rei’s eyes never leave you. Jeez, she needs to lighten up. You take the fold

“C’mon, let’s go.” Josie calls for a cab, and one screeches to a halt in front of you. The driver glances over at the six of you, probably wonder what a bunch of teenage girls are doing in this part of town. You cram into the car, and he speeds off to the Bureau headquarters on request. You try your best to read the contents of the folder, but with Josie pressing into your right, while Erika’s squished against your left, it’s a tall order. You finally manage to get the Hexenkraft seal off, and flip through the pages. Written in English for the Thompson’s convenience.

That’s right, Alma and Rei aren’t the only people in danger of suffering the Hexenkraft’s wrath. They have a gang of people too. You wonder if you should take care of them too. Alma doesn’t seem too worried about the wellbeing of her own men. There’s one thing that does catch your eye in the folder.

“The recovery of Codename: Marionette, and her men is of the utmost importance, Lucius. Failure will not be tolerated. - Obersturmfurher XXX Dahl.” So they were planning a prison break. It’s a good thing that you caught them when you did. Alma’s abilities might have made that easy. You leave it back in the folder, you should leave it for the Bureau’s analysts to dig through. The cab stops at the front building that conceals the Bureau’s headquarters. You pay the cabbie, who then speeds off without another word. You step into the office building, and find a sleepy receptionist, who recognizes you, and gives you a lazy wave. You step further down into the lobby and stop at a painting, you pull it down, and push it to the left very very carefully. Any further and you might trip an alarm. It reveals a large lift that leads down into the bowels of the building. You glance over at Alma, a smug smile on your face.

“They were gonna send you on a suicide mission anyways. It’s a good thing that you came with us.” Alma’s expression is one of shock and awe. The lift stops at the bottom. Agents buzz around like bees around their hive. The chatter of speech fills the room. A few agents bump into you, and leave without even saying sorry. Typical New Yorkers. You glance over at Alma again, as you lead her through the complex.

“I think the higher ups will want to a have a talk with you. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure that they’ll go easy on you.” An agent jogs up to match your pace, you recognize his voice as the one who you spoke to last night.

You cross your arms as you attempt to intimidate Alma. Rei glares at you like a hawk at it’s prey. It’s a good thing that there’s several inches of reinforced glass protecting you from the Japanese girl’s wrath. Alma shifts uncomfortably in her seat, obviously extremely nervous to be in this situation. There’s no one to help her now. Except for you, of course. As long as she plays by the rules, everything should work out just fine. You lean against the table, wishing you had a stack of papers to stack or something. Or anything to psych her out further.

“Sooo, have you ever met with the people Hexenkraft sends to help you out?” She nods slowly.

“Sometimes, when they think it’s necessary. It’s another magical girl. They call her Wildfire.” She shudders as she speaks the name.

“Sounds like she isn’t a very nice person.”

“Not at all. She poses as an assassin for the Salvatore Family. But, she only takes jobs that involve the government. No surprise there, I guess. She, erhm, threatened to burn us alive. Individually, while the others watched.” The shifting gets worse as she speaks about this Wildfire girl.

“Ah, it’s nothing to worry about. I’ve fought the leader of these schmucks, and lived to tell the tale! They’re all a bunch of pushovers.” Actually, Josie defeated Dracula, and Mercy almost killed you but she doesn’t need to know that.

“Well, that’s reassuring I suppose...”

“And I’m guessing that the Salvatore family are another gang supported by the Hexenkraft.” She shrugs.

“I think that’s accurate. They’re our rivals, so I don’t know that much about them. Except for the fact that they’re all ten times richer than me. One of theme even owns the restaurant we ate at when we first met.”

“Speaking of money, those mobsters who were after you on the pier, were the-”

“Salvatores? I think so.”

“Any idea where they work from? What about this Wildfire girl?” She frowns as she stares at the floor, you think you can sense jealousy in her.

“Probably in some front company, or something. They definitely like the look of their own names. She usually wears some kinda business attire when she pays us a visit, so I guess that she’s usually Downtown too.”

“See, this isn’t too bad, right? You’ll be right as rain once we get through this.” She nods slowly. Looks like she’s small fish in a pig pond.

“Last question. How do you think the Hexenkraft are getting this stuff onto American shores?” She shrugs again.

“I saw something that looked like a sub around the pier. Usually comes up at night. But it can’t be a sub because it’s too big for something like that.” You suspect that that’s exactly what it is.

“See? Painless.” You open the door to the conference room, and let her leave before you.

Well, was productive.

That submarine sounds like trouble. And cutting off their means of getting their weapons and supplies here, while stranding their operatives in America in one fell swoop sounds like a good deal to you. Alma rises from her seat and she follows you.

“Wait, where are you going? I thought that you said you’d keep us safe?” Rei stands opposite her, and looks rather displeased with you. You keep your distance with the pair of criminals. There’s no way they’re try anything here and now.

“But I said that the Bureau would keep you safe. They’ve got a bunch of other magical girls. Some are even better at their jobs than I am! Try not to miss me too much while I’m gone, hm?” You spin on your heel and walk away from her before she can get another word in. You’re a magical girl, dammit, not a babysitter. Well...you’ve babysat before, but that’s irrelevant! Wait. Something’s missing. You look behind you, and to your horror Babs isn’t with you. Impossible, she’s never wandered off by herself before, why do so now?

“Hey, Babs? Come out! Where are you?” You’re not sure if she can hear you, but you are certain that she can’t understand you. Maybe she’ll recognize your voice and find you? You scramble around the main floor of the facility, desperately looking for the Babylonian. You finally find her hands in cuffs, and head hanging. A pair of security officers flank her, speaking to one of the office’s executives.

“Understood. Are you certain that she’s a magical girl?” The one to her left nods at the executive.

“A hundred percent, sir. She tried to stop us with by tripping us up with concrete.”

“But she didn’t transform.”

“No, sir.”

“Understood. We’ll have to try our best in training her then.”

You can’t bear this anymore. You sprint to the trio surrounding Babs as if she was some kind of criminal.

“Hey! She’s with me! Let her go!” The four of them look up at you. The officer pushes his glasses back up the bridge of his nose, impassively.

“Yours or no, Victory, she doesn’t have clearance to be here. And she hasn’t been properly examined. She’s a security ri-” You snap at him

“She’s a friend. Security risk?! She can’t even speak a modern language! Who’s she reporting to? The skeletons of her people?” On of the guards scoffs at you

“What are you, her big sister? You look close enough to be.”

You shove your way past the guards, who almost reach for their weapons as you reach for Babs. You suspect that the only reason they haven’t shot you yet is because of the officer keeping them from doing so. The man glares at you angrily, obviously upset that one of his underlings is disobeying him. But this is America, the land of the free. He has no power over you. Well, unless he orders you to stop. He hasn’t yet, for some reason. You pull Babs close to you, you’re sure that she’d return the gesture if her hands weren’t bound.

“I might as well be. Now let her go, she’s not hurting anyone. And she’s coming with me.” The officer doesn’t seem moved. You guess that kind of icy hearted professionalism’s why he’s an officer rather than someone like you. You hug Babs closer to you, hoping that your display of affection for the girl would be enough to sway the apparently heartless man. You squeeze Babs even tighter, until you can feel her desperately trying to worm her way out of your grasp. Nuh uh, she’s not getting out of this until you see this man’s heart melt into a puddle on the ground. You see him take his glasses off his face so he can rub his eyes. Progress!

“Very well. If you trust her this much, then there’s no reason we shouldn’t either. And I’m sure that you’ll have better luck with acclimating her to her new surroundings than we will.” You’re damn right you will. The guard unlocks the cuffs, and Babs returns your hug, ten times tighter than you hugged her.

“I’m glad that we could reach an understanding. Now I’ll be off, got important business to do.” It’s very hard to walk, or move with a hundred pound girl clinging to you. Diane giggles at the scene from behind a hand. You look over your shoulder and speak to Babs. She’s a good listener, at least.

“What happened back there? Don’t leave me again, y’hear? Other people aren’t gonna be so nice to you.” She stares back at you, a slight smile on her face. That’s all you need from her.

“That’s adorable! You really are like siblings!” Oh shut up, Babs is just your... You don’t know what exactly she is to you, but she’s definitely not your sister!

“Now come on, let’s go fishing.” You call another cab, which Diane generously pays for, and you head back to the pier. The sun’s going down, if Alma’s intel is right then some kind of submarine was supposed to be here, and it was supposed to surface at night so that people could deliver their goods. You turn to face your resident expert in all things Hexenkraft.

“Did you ever hear about some kinda huge sub creeping around America before?” She shakes her head.

“A little bit. A ship called ‘Sea Serpent’ was supposed to be built. Was supposed to be used by the Kriegsmarine, but Dracula arranged for it to be crewed by Hexenkraft troops.” Interesting. A name isn’t much to go on, but it’s better than nothing. The cabbie stops for you at the pier. The amber color of the sunset lights up the skyline of the city. It makes for a rather beautiful sight.

Well, it looks like like you like you have like you have some to kill.

Josie knows a shocking amount of information about the mob and it’s members. How else would she be able to pick out a member from a crowd so easily? The five of you take shelter in one of the warehouses lining the pier. It looks like it’s been abandoned for years. The inside stink of rust and seawater, but there doesn’t seem to be anything that would harm you inside. It’s fitting that the Hexenkraft picked such a creepy place to set up shop. You make yourselves comfortable inside the warehouse. It’s got a good view of the water too. Reminds you of the time Joan snuck you out of school for ice cream on the beach. You prop your head up against a wooden crate as you ask Josie your questions.

“Hey, you seemed familiar with that Russo guy from before. You know him at all?” Her ears perk up as you speak.

“Huh? Oh him, erh. Yeah, he was my training partner from when I was a boxer! Yeah, that’s it.” That’s not an entirely convincing answer. You press her for more information.

“Uh huh. And how did you end up with a mobster as your sparring partner?”

“Uhm. Chance?” Josie quickly realizes that she’s been found out, and caves to you.

“Uuuuuugh. Fine, you win, alright. I used to box with him because he was my only friend. When I was in the mafia.” You raise an eyebrow at her.

“You? In the mafia? Oh, that’s rich, but c’mon. Give me a real answer.” She punches you in the shoulder lightly. It smarts quite a bit.

“You wanted to truth, right? Well I’m giving it to you.”

“So not only did work with the leader of Hexenkraft at one point, but you were also in the mob. Did I get all that.” She turns her face away, and you sense that you’ve hit a nerve. Maybe you shouldn’t have said that last bit.

“Ye-yeah. Look, it wasn’t my brightest moment.”

“And...? What did you do? Kill anyone? Or maybe something a bit more scandalous...?” You tease her., This earns you another punch in the arm.

“No, no. Nothing like that. All I did was break a few people’s legs.”

“Oh. I see, wait what?” She’s way too nonchalant about being a legbreaker for a criminal group. This definitely warrants more questions

“What? It isn’t so different from hurting someone in the ring y’know, I get paid either way.”

“You really didn’t have any reservations about doing something like this?” She sighs heavily as she flops down onto the concrete.

“When I was younger, nope! I was more concerned with the money they were giving me! Asking questions doesn’t get me paid, so why do it?”

“And I assume that something made you change your ways?”

“Clockwork did! Holly said that she could help me make money that didn’t involve hurting innocent people.”

“And that’s how you ended up with the Bureau?”

“Yup! That’s how they roped me in!”

You want to ask her more questions. But it’s a sensitive topic for her, obviously. You don’t want to be throwing her off her game now. You take the remainder of the time to take a well deserved nap. It’s not long before you’re jerked awake by Josie. There’s something out in the river. Is it a boat? It seems too big to be a ferry or something.

“Think that’s what we’re looking for.” Your eyes widen as the boat rises from the water. It’s a conning tower. That was only it’s conning tower. You hide in the shadows of the warehouse. The thing is coming closer. A shark’s mouth is painted on the end of it. The name of the leviathan is painted on the side of it.

Dealing with the men that have left ship would be easier to handle instead of a whole sub’s worth of troops and sailors. There’s a few of them, five or six of them at the most. Hexengrenadiers, it looks like. And a pair of Hexentruppen. Those could be trouble for you. One of them stands above the rest, wearing a peaked cap with the Hexenkraft insignia. You guess he’s the leader of the bunch. He almost looks like that officer you fought in Egypt. The one who got possessed by that ancient demon thing. You keep your eyes on the group as they carry their cargo with them to parts unknown. They walk further down the pier, and into the darkness of the night.

“Let’s go get ‘em, they’re not expecting us! We can get the drop on ‘em” You creep out of the shadows. The team speaks German quietly, muttering to each other. Those Hexentruppen are carrying the boxes, it seems like whatever’s in there is too heavy to for normal people to carry. All the more reason to keep them from getting the stuff to their destination. The sub is out view, and you spring from the shadows. They hardly have a chance to react before you transform, your hammer appears in your hand. One of them tries to yell a warning to his teammates, but you cut him off by slamming your hammer into his chest, sending him flying a good ways away from you. The officer and his remaining men level their weapons with you, and open fire. Babs raises both of her arms, and like that time in the prison the earth rises to her command, the anti magic rounds ping against the meters of concrete barrier. She breathes heavily, and smiles at you.

“I really owe you, Babs.” You ruffle her hair in congratulations. The sound of rock shattering before an armored fist interrupts you. The pair of power armored Hexentruppen level their gauntlets with you, which spit anti magic bullets at your group. You scramble away for cover, and feel a bullet bite into your foot. You yelp loudly, it’s not a fatal wound, but it’ll definitely make things harder for you here. Erika steps out, to face the storm of anti magic rounds. The Hexentruppen stand like statues, holding their weaponized arms out, and spraying the street with rounds. Erika transforms, even as the deadly bullets rain around her. A few of them hit home, but many others run afoul of her armor. She summons her 88 KwK to her hands again, and you can tell where this is going next. The booming report of her gun sounds through the street, and the stream of anti magic bullets stop. One of the Hexentruppen lies in a broken heap of metal, while the other tries to crawl away. The officer yells something into his earpiece. Most of it seems like orders, but a pair of words catches your attention.

“Feuer Blitzkannone!” Out of the corner of your eye, you can see the sub turning to face you. That shark mouth has opened up, revealing some sort of strange, sparking apparatus in the middle of it. Cargo will be fried, but hopefully catching the Hexengrenadiers will make up for it, and is safer than letting Erika get zapped
>>

> try catching then
It would be nice if Erika could take out the cannon but if she were to miss we would ask die...
>>
It’s becoming clearer and clearer to you what ‘Blitzkannone’ means as the aperture on the Seeschlange sparks with greater and greater intensity. You don’t want to stick around to find out what happens when it’s done with sparking like a firecracker. The Hexenkraft soldiers have all but abandoned their cargo and their wounded soldier to their fates. Typical. Josie stares at the Blitzkannone, while slowly backing away from the sub.

“U-uh boss? What’s the game plan here?” She chuckles nervously as she speaks, wringing her hands together as she walks back. You glance in the direction that the Hexengrenadiers ran. Letting them get out of here and cover their tracks would be bad too. That gun on the sub looks like it’s finished going through it’s display of power too. You aren’t sure how well that gun’s going to fare against the sheet metal of a warehouse, but you’d rather be anywhere but here when that thing fires.

“Let’s book it! After those creeps!” You shout, Erika glares angrily at the Blitzkannone, as if she was challenging it. A direct hit from her KwK might just do it in, but you aren’t sure if she can hit it from this range. You grab her by the armored gauntlet, and struggle as you try your best to drag her with you. The anti magic round in your foot isn’t doing you any favors. Erika gets the picture, and runs to meet up with the others in the warehouse. You limp your way into the entrance of the warehouse, you’re almost to safety when the sound of thunder overtakes your hearing. Your back screams in pain and you do too. Your eyes water as you bite down on your lip, in an unsuccessful attempt to suppress the pain. Dear Lord in heaven, it hurts like nothing else on this world. You fall to your knees, gasping for breath like a fish out of water. You touch the spot where that arc of lightning scorched your back. You scream again as your fingers brush over the wound. It was a glancing hit it looks like, and you aren’t bleeding. The team rushes over to their fallen leader, Erika’s the first to react, and scoops you up, letting you lean your weight on her shoulder.

“A-athena, are you okay?” You want to snap at Diane. But that wouldn’t accomplish anything. Especially after she’s dropped the snobby Frenchwoman act.

You grit your teeth as you separate yourself from Erika. The anti magic round in your foot burns, but it’s nothing compared to being electrocuted by some Nazi death ray. If those Krauts though a little bit of lightning would have stopped you, then they’ve got another thing coming. You’ve Magical Girl Victory, after all. Wouldn’t have gotten that name if you just gave up because you took a couple of nasty hits. You’re still a bit wobbly, however Babs and Erika’s quick to steady you again.

“Relax, Athena. Don’t irritate your wounds.” Erika’s advice is sound, but you don’t care much about it right now.

“Be-becoming deep fried Victory has only made me angrier. I wanna give those Krauts a piece of my mind. With my hammer." Josie and Diane stare in awe at your determination. After going through that, a couple of Hexengrenadiers seems like child's play. Josie gives you a toothy grin before she transforms into her magical girl outfit.

“If you need me to carry you on my back or something I don’t mind, boss.” You roll your eyes at the girl before turning your nose up at her.

“Feh, you’ll probably drop me on my face, you dolt.” She breaks out into giggling. You walk over to the other entrance that the Hexenkraft soldiers ran out of. Their boot prints are very visible through the dust lining the ground.

“This way!” You lead them through the entrance, and out onto a street. Tenement buildings are on both sides of the roadway, most of the lights are turned off. You wonder how these people manage to sleep through the commotion from before.

“Where’d they run off too? I hate it when they don’t give us a fair fight.” Josie muses to herself. You’re pretty frustrated with them hiding away from you. How are you supposed to get your revenge if they don’t show their dumb faces? You keep going down the street, before you stop at an alleyway. It’s dark, and very spooky looking at this hour. So it’s a perfect place for Hexenkraft to hide out to prepare an ambush for you. Erika stops you with a hand.

“I’ll go first. Don’t want you getting hurt anymore.” That’s awfully brave of her. Smart, too, since her magical girl outfit’s practically a suit of plated armor. She takes a few steps into the alleyway, and then you hear angry German, and the sounds of struggle. You rush into the alleyway too, to find Erika surrounded by Hexengrenadiers. Looks like she tripped the ambush for you. The officer points his sidearm dead center on her head.

“You survived the Blitzkannone, hm? Unexpected, but not unforeseen. I will give you a choice, Victory. Let us go free, or I blow this traitor’s head open in the time it takes for you to beg me to stop.”

The nerve of these people.

“Hah! Haha! HAHAHA!”

The adrenaline suppressing your pain has made you a little more than loopy. Even the Hexengrenadiers look at you like you’ve finally lost it. Their commanding officer isn’t fazed by the display. You summon your hammer as you finally regain your composure enough to consider fighting, the officer presses his gun against Erika’s forehead.

“Back off, unless you want your friend to die! I’m not going to say it again.” You keep laughing at him. There’s something that’s just so hilarious about him and this whole entire situation. It’s so incredibly funny how this Nazi thinks he can order you around like you're some weakling who can’t protect her friends.

“Don’t worry, I’ve made my choice.” He raises an eyebrow, but before he can act, you send a thin strip of concrete up into his hand with the force of a subway train, sending his sidearm flying through the air.

“I choose to kick the crap outta all of you!” You yell, you charge into the midst of the Krauts, standing next to Erika. The Kraut officer’s eyes go wide as you sweep him off his feet. He shouts something at his men, but you shut him up with a strike to the jaw. He glares at you extraordinarily angrily. You smile smugly down at him. He’s lost and he knows it. He curses in German, and you shut him up for good with another strike to the side of his head. The soldiers stab and swipe at you with their combat knives. A few of them circle around you and try to get at Erika. Not on your watch. You make a broad, sweeping strike with your hammer, knocking Hexengrenadiers to the ground like bowling pins. They rub their heads as they struggle to orientate themselves. Josie and Diane spring into action too.

“Well said! I’m glad that we can get back to thrashing Krauts so soon!” Diane says happily as she twirls into combat. One of the Hexengrenadiers makes a surprised sound as Diane’s rapier goes through his throat. Josie’s having way too much fun with this. She kicks a Hexengrenadier in the knee as he attempts to get back up. You can hear him groan in pain even through his mask. Josie crushes his other kneecap with a punch. The remaining Hexengrenadiers attempt to organize an organized retreat. But they have nowhere to run. They spray at you with their MP40s. You take a page out of Babs’ book, and send a sheet of rock to meet with them. More curses in German as they fail to end you. You hear them break into a desperate sprint away from you. Oh no, they’re not getting away. Not if you have anything to say about it. Diane’s two steps ahead of you, she speeds towards them like an arrow, spearing one through the gut. His comrade yells in rage as he draws his sidearm, and attempts to put a hole into Diane’s brain. No such luck. Josie body checks him with all her might, sending him sprawling to the ground in a heap Erika’s wisely decided to hold off on shooting off her 88, but she refuses to be left out of the fight. Her armor clanks against the ground as she charges into the fray. She summons her 88. You call out to her

“Erika, wai-”

Which she then uses to bludgeon a Hexengrenaider over the head with, leaving a sizable dent in his helmet. She makes a strained face as she heaves the monstrous gun’s barrel into the final Hexengrenadier’s chest, easily bowling him over. Josie wipes the sweat off her brow.

“Phew, gotta say. This whole vacation thing is tiring me out a bit.”

It’s tiring you out too, you look over your handiwork. You should call the Bureau here, so they can handle these Hexenkraft men.

Your injuries pulse and throb in pain as the adrenaline subsides from your body. You hiss in pain as the cool night air washes over the severe burn the Nazi’s lightning cannon left on your back. And that anti magic round in your foot insists that you take notice of it too. Josie takes a look at your back, and grimaces at the injury. They ruined your uniform too, the jerks.

“Eh, yeah...It doesn’t look good. You weren’t kidding about getting deep fried, huh. It’ll definitely leave a mark. But at least it’s on your back and not your face, right!” There’s always a silver lining, and Josie’s really good at spotting it. Erika hooks your arm around her back, serving as makeshift crutch for you. Babs has attached herself to you again, wisely keeping her hands away from the wound. Erika’s voice has a stern edge to it, you even sense a hint of concern in her usually unemotive speech

“You’re going to get those wounds looked at. Take some time to recover.” She speaks as if she was your mom, it sounds more like an order than advice. The streets are peacefully empty, but don’t know if that sub’s sent reinforcements after you. Looks like they’re letting you off the hook, for now. You giggle at her as she keeps carrying you down the street.

“And let those Krauts do whatever they please in my hometown? I ‘ppreciate the thought and I’m glad that you care about me so much, but I’m not gonna let that happen.” Erika’s hand digs into your shoulder painfully. Hatred and concern mix in the look she gives you. Your mind reels as Erika raises her voice for the first time since you met her. At you, no less.

“Don’t be stupid! Don’t put yourself at undue risk, dammit!” Erika turns away from you once she’s finished her little rant, obviously very frustrated about your choice of action. You pat her on the shoulder reassuringly. She doesn't respond at all.

“I’m not as stupid as you think y’know. The Bureau’s got some real good doctors, they’ll have be as right as rain in no time, you’ll see.” Still nothing. Aw well, it was worth a try at least. Erika must have been bottling her thoughts up for some time. You have to admit, you do make some impulsive choices. Charging a prototype Hexenkraft soldier alone comes to mind. So does putting on an ancient Babylonian artifact without know what it’ll do to you. Soon enough, you’re in another cab, headed back to the headquarters of the Bureau. Erika lets go of your shoulder reluctantly as the medical staff cart you off on a stretcher. You wave a goodbye to your team.

[1/2]
>>
>>516889
“You worry too much, Erika.” She doesn’t get a chance to reply to you before you’re left in a sterile white room. In it is the Bureau’s resident medical expert. And it’s only pacifist. Magical Girl Asclepius. She smiles, and does her best to look happy despite the bags under her eyes.

“Yeeowch! Didja get hit by lightning or something? Looks like you tried finding out what happens when you stick a fork in an electrical outlet.” Her Texan accent is very noticeable, it sounds like she doesn’t even try to hide it.

“Something like that. Can you fix it?”

“Does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? ‘Course I can! Won’t be able to cover up the scarring though, but hey, some people are into that!” Sparkling and shimmering medical tools are splayed out on a cloth before her. Those must be what she summons instead of a weapon.

“I think it looks neat, gives you a real salt of the earth tough girl kinda look!” Hm, you’re no expert in fashion, so you’ll have to take her word for it. She gets to work on the bullet wound in your foot, and you groan in protest as she probes around your flesh to retrieve it. You feel your wound knitting itself back together before her tools even leave the wound. She stares at the bullet, and makes a sour face at it. She smiles at you, and prepares a syringe full of something.

“Fixing this’ll hurt more than that, so I’ll have to put you under for a bit.” You nod your consent, and the pinprick of the needle goes into your arm. You feel yourself get flipped over, and then your vision goes black.

It’s the next day once you’ve awoken, your bed is surrounded by the team. Erika doesn’t look as angry as she was yesterday.

“See, what’d I tell ya’?” You spring out of your bed and onto your feet. The injured on still aches a tiny bit, and you wince as you press your weight against it. An Bureau agent bursts through the door, carrying a stack of papers for you.

“Fresh intel, Victory. Looks like the Salvatores your friend was talkin’ about have a front in the Rockefeller Office Complex Downtown. And you’ve also got a visitor. A couple of shady characters calling themselves the Candere Brothers.”

“The Canderes? Here? Aw man, we must be in big trouble if they want to talk to us.” Josie’s mouth hangs open at the sound of the name. More mobsters, it sounds like.

“Or they could want our help. Erh, would they?” Diane rubs her chin in thought

You need all the help you can get if you’re going to handle a whole entire crime group. Not to mention the magical girl hitwoman they have in their employ. Beggars can’t be choosers after all. If they just so happen to be criminals themselves, then so be it. Besides, Alma was pretty cooperative with you after you helped her understand her situation. Who says these Candere Brothers can’t be like that as well?

“Why, Josie? Are they big shots in the underworld or something?” She nods slowly, fear is written across her face.

“One of the biggest of the big shots, boss. If it’s illegal they’ve got people doing it all over the country.”

“Oh relax, if they wanted us out of the picture they would have done it when Victory was out.” Diane’s not really helping the situation, but you sense that her heart’s in the right place. Most likely.

“Yeah, exactly. Hey, speaking of which, did anyone tell the higher ups about that sub that almost roasted me?” Erika nods an affirmative.

“Yes. They had the Army Air Force send out scout planes...and...” Erika trails off. That doesn’t sounds good.

“And?”

“Nothing. They sent sonar planes out miles into the Atlantic, and they all came back empty handed. It was almost as if the sub just vanished into the water. Like a real sea serpent.”

“Psh. That’s impossible. Things that huge don’t just vanish. Sure, the Nazis might have been able to turn their soldiers invisible, but a whole sub that must’ve been hundreds of meters long? Not possible.”

“So, what are you thinking? Magic, maybe?” The agent strokes his chin in thought. His guess is as good as yours, and you give him a shrug.

“Maybe we should just keep planes ready to torpedo it to kingdom come if it ever shows it’s face again. We can pick up the pieces and find out from there. What did the Candere’s want with us, anyways?” The agent shakes his head.

“Not everyone. Just you, Victory.” You look over at Babs, who’s staring at her feet. She inches closer to you, which triggers you to pull her closer to you.

“We’re a package deal, tell them that.”

“Ah, the Babylonian? I’m sure that they’ll understand if you just explain things to them.”

You aren’t too sure about that.

[x] “Oh c’mon. That’s a trap if I’ve ever seen one. It’s almost like they aren’t even trying.”

I think they just want us to help take down their competition. Also if we can tell them the whole team I'd coming that would be great. They know we aren't interested in local crime so there's no reason to be afraid of us. Maybe they just want less witnesses when they cut a deal.

You roll your eyes at the prospect. Do they think you were born yesterday? They might as well haved asked you to ask Hitler for his autograph. You’ll humor them, but there’s no way that you’re walking into their hands alone and unprepared. There’s also the chance that they’re sincerely trying to help you, and are just going about things in a sketchy way like Russo was. But what are the chances of that, right?

“Well, we shouldn’t keep such illustrious guests waiting, hm? Should make a good first impression on them.” The agent nods, and gives you the address of the meeting place. Looks like they want to meet with you for breakfast. At Saint Lawrence. What a surprise, you hope that they’ll be picking up the tab. You leave the room, the pain in your foot’s almost entirely gone thanks to Asclepius’ handiwork. She really is a miracle worker, you’d ask for her to be transferred to your team, but you’re almost a hundred percent certain that she’d refuse. Oh well. You skip out of the room with renewed vigor. Sure is nice to not have a bullet in your heel.

Saint Lawrence’s is within walking distance from the Bureau’s headquarters. It’s nice to be based in the nice part of town, though you rarely see any Bureau agents or employees eating here. It’s just as crowded as it was when you and Alma went. People stream by you, completely disregarding the five teenagers while they’re on their way to work, or whatever else.

“If you know it’s a trap, why are you still going to meet them?” Erika hisses angrily into your ear. You spin to meet her, and give her the biggest smile you can manage

“Because I have you guys with me! We’d be able to turn the tables on them like that if they did try something dumb.” You snap to emphasize your point. Hopefully Erika doesn’t think you’re a reckless idiot.

“Spread out, try to look normal!” You whisper to your team. Just like at the cafe. The team disperses into the crowd, trying to mingle into the throngs of people that surround the restaurant. Looks like the place doesn’t need reservations for breakfast. A thin faced man dressed in a sharp looking suit waves you over.

“Victory! Over here!” He calls out to you. The moment of truth is upon you. You slowly walk over to him. He gives you a smile that looks like it belongs on a dentistry billboard.

“I’m Clayton Candere. I heard you’ve got beef with the Salvatores. C’mon, let’s go inside, where there are fewer snoops.” He leads you inside the restaurant and your team slowly creeps in to follow you. He sits you at a table. It looks like he’s alone. Weren’t they supposed to be brothers?

“So. What’ll you have for breakfast? It’s on me.” He smiles at you again.

[x] “Can we cut to the chase? What did you want from me?”

Clayton flips through the pages of his menu, carefully regarding all of his options as he does so. He rubs his chin in thought. To the uninformed, he’d look like any ordinary patron of the restaurant instead of a ruthless mob boss who’s here to make a magical girl an offer. He’s doing a really good job of selling his ‘normal person’ act. He hums as he continues flipping through his menu until he notices that you haven’t touched yours.

“Maybe the eggs benedict? Hm? Victory, you haven’t touched your menu? Not hungry?” You stare at him. This has to be some kind of trick. He’s probably waiting for you to lower your guard before he springs onto you with his request. You aren’t having any of it, your dinner with Alma has trained you well for dealing with these mobster types.

“No, not really. I’m sure that you didn’t contact me out of all the other magical girls in the Bureau for no reason. What is it?” You figure that straight talk would help you the most here. Don’t give him any room to worm his way out of your grasp. He sets the menu down onto the table, as if he’s finished deciding. He takes a deep breath, and you wait with baited breath to see what he’ll say next.

“I’ll have the eggs benedict.” Drat, he’s good at this. Clayton hands his menu off to a waiter, who takes yours with it.

“As for you. I think I should be as frank with you as you were with me.” A sinister glint enters the man’s eye. He’s suddenly ten times more intimidating than he was just a few secconds ago.

“The Salvatores are in the way. We don’t like it when things are blocking us from getting what we want.”

“And let me guess, you want me to get rid of this blockage.”

“Smart girl. But, the thing is, if it was that simple, I coulda hired any Joe Schmoe with a gun to handle my problem. I’ve come to understand that these Salvatores have come into possession of special equipment, courtesy of Nazi Germany. And have been using it to their hearts content”

“And?”

“You look like a red blooded girl who loves her country, Victory. Tell me, what crime does that fall under?”

“Treason of course.” He jabs his fork at you, it comes within inches of your face.

“Exactly. Now, if we were to somehow, miraculously come into those weapons, it would be an open and shut case. They’d all be locked up for life. Doesn’t that sound good?” You nod, that’ll take out a whole crime family. That’s more than good. He holds a finger in front of your face.

“But. Wouldn’t it be a shame if all those weapons went to some warehouse in the middle of Nowhere, New Mexico? Maybe you should give them to someone who’ll take care of them. Like your old uncle Clayton. We’ll pay you handsomely for even a few. How’s that sound, hm? You could afford more ice cream than you could eat in a week.”

Clayton’s food arrives, and he digs in messily.

You stare at the ceiling, pretending to be deep in thought as the man devours his eggs with the reckless abandon of a lion tearing into a gazelle. So not only does he expect you to be his cleaner, he wants you to deliver Hexenkrafts weapons to him and his gang. It’s not a hard choice to make, and you tell him what you plan on doing. But, you decide to string him along for a little bit before you actually give him your answer. He’s been treating you like you’re a kid this entire time. Might as well use that to your advantage. You may look young, but that’s only a side effect of magic.

“Well, I do like ice cream...And it isn’t cheap” He chimes in between mouthfuls of eggs, cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk.

“Exactly, even for a magical girl like yourself, right?”

“Hmm, but I have one question.”

“And what’s that?”

“Why are you asking me to commit treason? You did say that it’s a crime. And I do love America more than I love ice cream.” He splutters around his breakfast as you speak. You keep stroking your chin, while giving him a smug look.

“Don’t worry, I liked the sound of the first part though. I’ll do that for free! The Salvatores will get in a lot of trouble for hanging out with those mean Nazis. Just give me the address of their hideout and then watch the fireworks!” Her clears his throat. You can see another pair of similarly dressed men approach him, but he waves them off. The two of them glare in your direction.

“Already gave you that intel. They got the whole place locked down.” You can see him clench his teeth in anger.

“Well, thanks for taking me to breakfast, Mister Candere. It was really nice meeting you!” You get out of your chair, and skip back to the entrance of the restaurant. You can hear Clayton mutter something to his underlings.

“Keep an eye on that little brat. I think she’s going to be trouble.” Damn right you are. Trouble for criminal scum like them is a good thing for you. You find Josie sitting outside, taking massive bites from a croissant.

“Hm? Done so soon? You beat anyone up, or was it a boring meeting.” She speaks with her mouth fully, and you can barely understand her.

“Didn’t get to beat anyone up, no. But it wasn’t as boring as you think.” You look around carefully, making sure that nobody’s eavesdropping on you. You lean in and whisper into Josie’s ear

“They wanted us to take the Salvatore’s Hexenkraft guns and give ‘em to the Canderes. Can you believe them?” Josie’s mouth opens in shock.

“That woulda been real bad news for the cops. It’s a good thing you didn’t accept their offer, right?” You nod.

The team slowly coalesces back together, outside Saint Lawrence’s. You’re all headed to Rockerfeller Office Complex. The belly of the beast, so to speak. If Clayton was to be believed, they control the entire building. You stop in front of the monolithic building, and it’s as intimidating as you’d expect a gang hideout to be. Diane breathes a sigh of astonishment

“Mon dieu, is this place full of those lowlifes?” You hope not.

“Well, let’s see what’s inside! It can’t be that bad.” You step inside, and find that it’s like any other office building. The receptionist gives you a rehearsed smile that almost blinds you with how bright it is.

“Can I help you girls with anything?”

[x] “Uhm, yes. What can you tell us about this place? Who’s in charge here?”
[x] “No, we’ll be fine. Thanks.”
