You have longed to leave the orphanage for as long as you can remember. Feeling the carriage shaking under you as it moves towards the mansion where you are probably going to spend the rest of your working life, you feel no relief or happiness though. Your hands are clammy, your heart is beating just a bit too fast, and you have that tickling sensation in all your limbs as if you were looking out from a very high cliff. And most inexplicably, you feel homesickness.

It comes to you like a sudden slap in the face: You will never see Pierre or Aurèlie again, the only friends you have ever had. Neither will you ever have to fall asleep in a room full of snoring teenagers, which, as much as it has been a bother, is also everything you've ever known. Never again will you mop the wooden tiles of the orphanage kitchen until your hands are sore either, and who will read the newspaper out loud for old François now, the nearly blind man who always sits with his dog at the cafe across the street?

You are barely able to keep yourself from crying. How did you even get into a situation like this? It had been a day just like any other, not long after your 18th birthday. You were sitting out in the sun eating a croissant when a blonde, rich, immensely beautiful girl came walking down the street. She looked so beautiful in her huge, light blue dress with crinoline; an umbrella open above her head to protect her from the sun. Her hair looked gold, and she smelled like the bakery on Easter day. You wanted to be her friend so much it hurt. Of course that could never be. When you were told the same evening that she had specifically asked for you when she came to find her new maid, you had thought yourself the luckiest person alive. On you way now, you weren't sure.

You move the curtains of the carriage windows to look out at the French countryside, trying to calm yourself. You have spent your entire life in Paris and you have never seen this much ... emptiness in your life before. Instead of calming you, it's making you more scared. At least you have been hired by a woman, which means you probably won't be raped. France is well-known for this phenomenon. Being a maid is incredibly dangerous work around here. Most maids get raped every day. Usually it's the first thing that happens to them every morning. The police know about it, but it's so ingrained in the culture that they tend to turn a blind eye. Since so many orphanage girls end up working as maids, you really lucked out with a female mistress.

You try to open the carriage door. It's locked. You keep trying to. The carriage suddenly stops. You hear some kind of shuffling going on over you and the horses make uneasy sounds. A man drops down on the road. He locks up and opens the carriage door.
"Miss, is everything all right?"
The man is a typical, poor coachman. He has a very long, small nose and his face is covered in the soot of the Parisian streets you left an hour ago. After giving you a quick look, his eyes dart around uneasily, hitting everywhere except you as he waits for your reply. It was a moment of claustrophobia and anxiety, wasn't it? You would be mad to run out in the French countryside after all. It is dangerous. You could be killed or raped.

>Do you go through with your escape, or do you sit back in your seat? If you choose to go through with the escape, provide some kind of reasonably realistic motivation. You will also need a strategy for how to get past the coachman who is sure to worry about you.

Kick him in the nuts, shove him down to the ground and steal the carriage. Drive in a random direction.

Be pessimistic, not seeing positive aspects of new world he will be part(that are plenty of those, abviously, but let make our guy(who don't have name by the way) closed up, pesimistich etc.). Avoid aye contact with anyone, and stay silent. Be overwhelmed by thoughts.
>>
>>52160
Say you need some fresh air. Ask him if you can sit with the door open for a minute.
While you wait, ask the coachman about the place you're going to and what your new mistress is like.
>>

"E-everything is fine," you say. "I j-just h-held onto the d-door handle for support, and uhm -- the carriage was shaking so much! So I kept pulling down the door handle -- accidentally! -- every time it shook. And that made it sound ... that made it sound like I was trying to open up the door! B-but," you end, "I was really not." The coachman looks at you like if he doesn't quite believe you, but would rather not know what it is about. "Well, Miss," he says, "I'll try to drive more carefully then." He gets up on the carriage again, and it starts moving. You're blushing and your heart is beating. You were never any good at lying. Some of the other kids at the orphanage would steal, but you could never do it. Even when you did, you were really bad at it. For example you knew very well that the simplest lie was always preferable to a complicated one. Yet you had tried to sell the coachman a very complicated lie. Well, at least once you arrive at the mansion you will never see him again. And to look at things on the bright side, after all the excitement now, with the door opening and everything, you've forgotten your homesickness.

The mansion is much bigger than you expected, lying behind a very tall fence. You have to wait while the coachman gets out to open up the gate. The mansion looks to you kind of like the madhouse a few streets down from your orphanage. The white house is as wide a small street with a main door twice as tall as yourself. The house front is covered in gothic ornamentation and the roof is as black as coal. The carriage stops by the front door. Soon enough the coachmen unlocks the door for you again, and you step down onto the mansion grounds. There is some kind of fountain just behind and you can hear the water running from it. The coachmen waits quietly. You wonder if he expects you to go and knock on the mansion door.

You have the sudden impulse to kill yourself. To, as it were, knock on heaven's door. Perhaps it's all the stress, your fear of the unknown. After all, this strange house is where you will probably spend the most of your life. It seems unimaginable to you right now. Absurd. Before you have the time to actually do anything with your morbid impulsion, a man comes out of the house. He has mutton beard and glasses, and is dressed in black servant's clothing. Something about the way the man carries himself makes you feel like he has no sense of humor. Abruptly he stops before you. "You are our Colette from the orphanage, correct? Our new maid?" You quickly nod. "Follow me."

The servant first pays the coachman and sends him on his way. Afterwards you he has you follow him into the mansion. Something compels you to try to lighten the mood a little, crack a few jokes. Before you have the chance you come to an entry with a huge staircase. The walls over it are covered in a humongous mural depicting some kind of apocalypse. Strange, beautiful angels who look like young women in togas are ripping off the heads of soldiers who run from them in fear. Two mean leaning on each other have had their heads ripped off and stuck to each other's spines. You swallow. The blonde girl must have had some really strange ancestors to put something like this up. In front of the staircase hangs a single, big chandelier. To lighten the atmosphere you try to crack a joke.
"Hehe, nice tapestry there, friend."
The servant stops just as abruptly as earlier. He is almost like a soldier.
"Excuse me, Miss?"
"Uh, nothing," you say.
Instead of to the staircase, the servant goes left. You follow him down several corridors. The mansion feels even bigger than you thought it would be. At least the tapestry here is cozier, white with floral patterns. You come to a very large room, almost the size of the orphanage's dining area. There is a couch, some chairs and a table. The walls are covered in bookcases, and the windows have a nice view over a lake beach that seems to be a part of the mansion property. This seems to be a kind of drawing room. The servant leads you through it and into what seems to be a bedroom. It's full of closets and has a huge four-poster bed, covered by curtains. You wonder what the man wants to show you when he suddenly opens another door that has been painted over with the same pale green as the walls, and hence is almost invisible to the unsuspecting. Inside is a very small dark room with a bed, a closet and a single lantern which the servant lights with a matchbox.
"You will find your servant clothes in the closet. Please put them on at once. In a few hours, Diana will come up to get you for supper. Otherwise you may do as you please. I'm sure Mistress won't mind if you borrow a book of hers from the drawing room. She loves her personal maids to read with her."
"Where is Mistress?" you ask, naturally.
"She has been visiting her aunt in Strasbourg. She will arrive during the night. You will likely be asleep when she comes."
You nod. "Well, I'll see if I can cozy up in here and try out my new slacks!"
"Excuse me, Miss?"
"Uh, nothing," you say. The servant shakes his head and leaves.

You open the closet, seeing the maid uniform hanging there like the future itself waiting to happen. You close yourself into your little servant's room, not intending to get naked with an open door. This is home, you think to yourself, in the soft light of the lamp the servant left for you, alone where you will be sleeping starting from now. You begin to take off your clothes until you're standing there naked. Compared to the bedding and the maid uniform hanging there for you, clean and new, your old clothes look like rags. You can still smell the Parisian streets on them. Stocking by stocking you begin to dress until you're suddenly standing there, fully in your maid outfit, with the little thing you have on your head which you have no idea what is called, but that you know for certain that is something only a real maid would wear. I am a maid now, you whisper to yourself. You feel shivers coming up your spine. This is a very special moment. You close your eyes and meditate for a bit. Would your parents, whoever they were, who once left you at the orphanage be proud of you? To know that their daughter had found work without having to become a criminal like so many orphans? You wipe a single tear from your cheek. "I dedicate my life's work to you, mother and father," you say in a normal speaking voice.

STOP MUSIC

Having gathered yourself you go out and to look at your mistress's bedroom. You move the curtains around the bed, almost waiting to find her lying there, but of course there is no one there. Just an expertly made bed. Hopefully this won't be one of your responsibilities. You are not very good at making beds. You walk over to the closets and, hesitantly, open them. So many beautiful dresses. The prettiest, most colorful silks hanging in long, tidy rows. You gasp. You move over to your mistress's dressing table. There is a mirror there, and for the first time you see yourself in your maid's outfit. Looks right. You're more interested in the wonderful smells coming from the small flasks of perfume that line the mirror though. What smells! You open a drawer and gasp to see all this jewelry. If Aurèlie were here, she would probably be halfway through the mansion grounds with all of this in a bag made out of the maid's uniform. Leaving everything looking untouched you walk into the drawing room with the windows facing the lake. Books aren't that interested when you're in an all new location though, so you try to leave the drawing room. You hear a strange, rhythmical noise as you step outside. Almost like a sewing machine. Your hearts stops as you see a human-shaped figure moving in abrupt chops of its limbs towards you. Its skin is made of ... metal and its eyes are two, small blue gems. You close the door, your heart beating. It is the scariest thing you have ever seen. You do not dare leave the drawing room after this.

The orphanage wasn't as great as it was the last few months you were there. It used to be ruled by a very strict, brutal woman who believed strongly in corporal punishment. If you spilled milk or didn't do your chores, she would beat you or lock you into a small closet where you couldn't stand up. Things like that. Once Aurèlie had stolen something and the woman had decided to punish you as well, since you were her friend. She had you both thrown into a completely dark room in the basement with no food for an entire day. You had been crying so much. The worst part had been the fact that you hadn't even done anything to deserve this. Aurèlie had tried to comfort you. She had slipped her hand in under your dress and panties, and she had shown you a whole new world of satisfaction. Hunger didn't matter after that.

Gripped by fear from seeing this metallic creature the first thing you could think was to do what Aurèlie had taught you to do when things got scary, the best way to comfort yourself. Since Aurèlie wasn't here to do it for you, and you didn't even have Aurèlie's clothes to smell while you were doing it, you decided to climb into the bed of your mistress. Closing the curtains, in case someone were to suddenly come into the room, you laid on top of the bedding and took of your clothes. You didn't want to get your new maid uniform sweaty. Your nipples were already hard as you lay there, stretching your hands and legs out naked. That faint smell in the bed reminded you of how the dirty laundry you sometimes washed at the orphanage would smell. Was this Mistress's sweat? Ah, how beautiful she had looked when you saw her last, you thought to yourself as your hand slipped in between your legs. It didn't take you long to be squirming to climax. Lying there in a daze you decided to read a book until this Diana came to get you for supper. You wondered what kind of book to read. You wanted to impress Mistress, but it was hard to say what she would like. A non-fiction book? A collection of fairy tales? Some kind of novel? You pondered this deeply.

When you entered the drawing room, fully dressed in your maid uniform, it had started raining outside. You had spent quite a bit of time panicking over the spots of sweat you had left on the bedding while you had been comforting yourself. While you had been panicking, it all dried away though.. Feeling relieved in more than one way after all this, you went over to the bookcases, throwing only a quick, worried look in the direction of the door you had opened earlier. You put your hands on your hips and stood scanning the row of books in front of you. "War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy" one said. Another said, "Collected Fairy Tales from Germany". In another aisle was a long row of books on the history of the Vatican. You were most drawn to a part of the bookcase that was full of especially shiny-looking books though. You had never seen anything like it. You pulled one of these books out from the shelf. There were beautiful illustrations wrapped around it, made by some technique you didn't recognize. A picture of a wilting flower looked almost real. The cover said, "New Moon by Stephenie Meyer". You put the book back into the shelf, drawing out another. "Mistborn Book One," it said, "The Final Empire. By Brandon Sanderson". Beside it were six more serious looking volumes of something called "My Struggle" by some or another Karl Ove Knausgard. There was also something called "1984 by George Orwell" and beside it "I, Robot by Isaac Asimov". You weren't sure what compelled you to pull it out, but on the cover there was a picture of just such a metallic creature you had seen outside. "A robot," you whispered to yourself before putting the book back. On top of these books you found a strange turquoise, rectangular object with small knots on it and a black square. It read "GameBoy Color". You tried pushing down some of the knots before putting it back. Something about these objects made you very uncomfortable. Like the thing you had just seen outside in the hallway, there was something very off about to them. You went back to the more normal looking books. Eventually you chose a book on the occult. Perhaps this might be able to explain some of the strange things you had seen today.

You were just finishing a long chapter about critical thinking and how all hauntings are shams when Diana finally came for you. She was a small woman in her early 30s, but because of her stature she looked almost like a child. Only the very wrinkled skin, which made her otherwise seemly face look homely, revealed her true age.
"Supper is ready, Miss," she said, her bright blue eyes never once leaving the floor.
You followed tightly behind her through the hallways. There were no metallic creatures in sight. You reached the entry with the strange murals again, going up the stairs and right. You thought you could hear the rain outside through the walls.

Following the woman, you passed hallway after hallway. Every time you turned a corner you were hoping you had finally arrived where you were going, and you would no longer have to feel bad about still not having asked about what you most of all couldn't stop worrying about.
"M-miss Diana?" you finally said.
"Yes," she said after you had passed through another corridor.
"There was a metal man ... In the hallway outside Mistress's room ... What was it?"
You kept walking for a long time. Just when you thought she would never reply, she said,
"Metal man does what metal man does."
You didn't dare to ask what she meant by that. Instead you kept following her through another set of corridors. It was really amazing the insides of this mansion, almost like a maze of hallways.

The two of you arrived at a small dining room. Around a rectangular table sat several servants; the women dressed in maid uniforms similar to the ones you and Diana were wearing, the men dressed like the man who had picked you up from the mansion grounds when you had arrived by carriage. The very same servant was sitting at the head of the table now. He was watching you and Diana as you seated yourselves. Soon enough plates of food were brought for each servant by a new maid. When she had served everyone else, the same woman sat down with her own plate. You were impressed. This was a much better meal than the gravy and bread you would usually get at the orphanage. It was mashed potatoes, some kind of fish - as well as peas. You ate it all up like a Christmas dinner.

After dinner was over, the same maid who had given everyone their plates began cleaning up. You sat unsure of what to do when Miss Diana called for you. She didn't mince words, but started going back the long way you had come before the dinner immediately. Standing outside the door of your mistress's drawing room, she turned and went at once. You hurried inside before any "robots" showed up. Outside, you noticed, it had started getting rather dark. It was still raining. You thought about your mistress out there, probably freezing in a carriage somewhere out on the roads. Poor thing.

There is no way in the world you're going anywhere with that metallic monster possibly wandering around just outside. And even if there wasn't such a thing, those hallways outside make you uneasy. When you walk through them, you almost feel like they're shifting and changing as you move, like they are alive in some strange way. You really want to know more about this strange house though. You did expect the world to be different outside of your orphanage and Paris, but this is a lot more different than anything you could have imagined. What you have seen would even be too strange for a novel. Perhaps that is the reason you so easily believe it all.

You walk over to the bookcase. There was something you briefly saw when you were scanning it earlier. It was these really big books that seemed to have pages that looked kind of like thin glass. You grab one of these books. Touching the glass along the side of the book, you are surprised to find it's soft. Even softer and less stiff than paper. You open the book. There is a painting of a huge oak inside this glass page, which really seem to be transparent pockets. What impresses you the most is how detailed the little painting is. It's almost as if it's real. On the next page there is a painting of the same oak from a different angle. You continue to turn the pages. Eventually it's a different oak, but really, all that is in this book is oaks, oaks, oaks, oaks. You put it back where it was and pull out another of these books. You half expect to see more of the same paintings, instead it's people. And it's people you know.

Or at least one person you know. It's your mistress, though much younger than you know her, in some kind of forest with a tall, thin, dark-haired man with sharp features and small, square glasses. He looks like a person who has a hard time having fun, but judging from his big smile, he is doing his very best here. Their clothing is strange. You turn the page. You see your mistress on a frozen lake. She is wearing skates. On the next page it's your mistress, the restrained man again, and a woman with curly, blonde hair. She looks like a warmer, rounder version of her daughter, and is just as beautiful in her own way. Are these her parents? You start to turn the pages quickly. Whoever drew these paintings must be a true expert to be able to paint this detailed and this many paintings, but perhaps that is why the paintings are so small. It's hard for you to process everything, but they generally all show the same three people in different combinations in all kinds of strange places. Some are easily recognizable, such as green countrysides, other show you landscapes you can't even begin to comprehend: Houses so large they seem to disappear into the sky and deserts of snow.

>Part 2/2

Suddenly a painting makes you stop. Your mistress, looking perhaps 16 or so, is holding the hand of her mother lying in bed. You can just barely recognize her mother though. All her hair has fallen off. You hear a loud bang suddenly somewhere far away and it scares you into closing the book. You put it back. You don't dare look at more paintings now.

Instead you spend the rest of the evening reading more of the occult book from earlier. It goes on about a case in Britain now, where a family used hired actors to fool people into believing their house was haunted so they could earn money to pay back a huge debt their fortune wouldn't cover. As it darkens completely outside you start to feel very cold and put the book back in its place. There is a small fireplace in the drawing room, but you don't know where the wood and everything is, and also not if you're allowed to light it. Shaking you go to your little servant's closet in the back of your mistress's bedroom. In a few hours she will be coming home. You remove your maid's uniform and put on a nightgown you find in your closet. With reverent hands you hang your maid's uniform in the closet. Your nightgown is white and goes down all the way to your ankles. It's the softest thing you have ever worn. You close the door of the little room behind you. Since the lamp from earlier has burned out, you're completely in the dark. You quickly get into the bed, covering yourself up. It's still so cold you're shaking. You know a trick from the orphanage though. You make yourself as small as you can and soon enough you can feel sweet sleep coming. In the middle of the night you wake up from an incredibly loud human, female scream. You sit up in your bed with your heart pounding. It sounds like it came from mistress's bedroom.

>What do you do?

Scooby?
Also, peak out of your closet.

Go check on the mistress. It is your duty as a maid, after all, to not only make sure everything is tidy but also to ensure your charge's safety.

Whatever is going on, you are at this mansion to do a job, and you don't know if this is something that is part of your responsibility unless you find out what it is. Still, you take your precautions. To not scare your mistress in case she is in there now, you put on the headpiece of your maid uniform. You also pick up the lantern from the ground. It's heavy and you might be able to defend yourself with it if it becomes necessary. Carefully you open up the door of your maid's closet, peaking out into mistress's bedroom. There doesn't seem to be anything going on at first. You realize you can hear a sound though. Somebody crying quietly. It comes from the bed. You move slowly over to the bed, hesitating for a long time before moving the curtains slightly away. There is a blonde girl in a purple nightgown lying there. Your mistress. She looks beautiful, and her smell hits your face so strongly you feel your tummy turn. It's a mix of the bakery-like, sweet smell you had sensed when she had walked past you by the orphanage, so long ago, and a much stronger concentration of what had brought you to climax earlier, when you were scared from the metallic monster: The scent of her sweat. You blush.
"Mommy?" she says, her voice weak and hopeful as she looks up at you.
"N-no, it's only me you," you say.
Her face suddenly turns serious, and she lifts herself up on her elbows. Tears are still running from her eyes, but she has the expression of someone in a business meeting now.
"T-the new maid?" she says, trying to sound confident and decisive. Her voice is shrill though.
"Y-yes," you say.
"T-t-this is nothing. I just had a n-nightmare. Everyone has nightmares sometimes, right?"
"Right," you say. You're about to tell her about once you had a nightmare to make her feel better when she interrupts,
"M-my o-other maid ..."
"Yes?"
"My previous one ..."
"Yes."
"She w-would hold me when I had nightmares ... Until I f-fell asleep."
Her firm eyes turn more and more vulnerable as she speaks. She looks like she is already regretting asking you this,
"W-will y-you do that f-for me?"

You put the lantern close to one foot of the bed, where there's hopefully no chance of someone stepping on it when getting out of the bed. Trying to make as little as of it as you can, you climb into the covers beside your mistress. You open your arms as if to hug her and she turns her back to you, moving into your grasp. After some awkward positioning from the both of you, you find yourself close enough to a girl you've admired so much from a distance that you're probably breathing in some of the air she breathes out at every breath. You didn't actually realize how cold you were until you got under her much thicker sheets, close to her warm body. Your legs and feet almost hurt as they start to regain their warmth. You should be very satisfied now. Warm and lying so close to a girl you've wanted to befriend so much. Instead you feel this weird yearning for something or other. You can't put your finger on quite what it is. But for some or another reason lying like this doesn't feel enough. You want more. But more of what? You've heard many stories of people becoming rich and that making them sad instead of happy. Maybe this is one of those things. Not that you're very disappointed, feeling her breathing in your arms, resting your cheek against her soft, light hair ... You sigh. She seems to be calming now. You close your eyes.
"W-what was y-your name again?" your mistress says, her voice a vulnerable whisper.
"Colette Plamondon, Mistress."
"Colette ... My mommy--Mom, I mean, would tell me stories to help me fall asleep."
"She would, Mistress? That sounds so nice." You have never had anyone to tell you stories.
"So will you tell me a story, please? To help me fall asleep? Be a good maid, for me ... Please."

>You're too far into this to back out now! You will have to tell her a bedtime story. What kind of story will it be? Provide as many or as few details as you want about said story.
>>
>>59479
It should be a pleasant story, one to get her mind off of less than pleasant times. Tell her the story of the happy little girl who travelled the world with her parents, referencing the book you found in the library.

I have actually mentioned her name before. Anyway, that is definitely a typo. You will find more small mistakes like that if you look for them. My prose is also simpler than what I would usually write. I try to cut myself some slack because I'm writing on the go like this though.

As for Aurélie, if you'll believe me, I know it's normally written that way, but I wrote it the wrong way the first time, so I just decided to go with it. Her half-illiterate mother wrote it like that on the birth certificate before she gave her away to the orphanage ...
>>
Getting caught up on this. Really liking this quest so far, OP.

>>59503

You try to think of a story to tell her. Maybe something crazy Aurèlie did once? She was always up to something, that girl, and every time it made a good story to tell people afterwards. But all of the stories seem too rough and unsophisticated for the beautiful, little combination of pride and vulnerability you are holding in your arms. You don't want to insult her by telling a story about poor children at an orphanage, neither do you want to upset her with a thieving story. So you go looking through your memory after something more suitable, something more respectable. There is of course that war poem blind, old François across the street liked to recite all the time. When you focus you think you can remember all the words, and if it turns out you've forgotten something, you can just fill in the blanks. Poetry is surely something that will impress mistress.
"Half a league, half a league!" you whisper, enunciating in such a way that she understands that this is something said loudly, with force. "Half a league onward!" For a moment mistress sounds like she is going to say something, so you wait, but she just keeps silent. You decide to continue reciting,
"All in the valley of Death rode the six hundred!"
"What in the world are you doing?" she breaks you off.
"R-reciting a poem, Mistress?"
"A war poem? Tennyson?"
"Y-yes."
"Do you think that will help me sleep?"
"N-no, Mistress."
"Then why in the world would you ...," she begins, sighing instead.
"W-what?"
"Just shut up. Get on your back."
"W-what?"
"You can't tell stories like the previous maid could," she says, lying over you on her stomach, "but you're taller and bigger than her, so you'll be better at this."
"W-what?" you say. Despite her small stature, mistress feels very heavy and painful on top of you like this. You can barely breathe the careless way she has stretched herself out over you, her nose in the pillow beside your neck and her knees digging down into your thighs. It is also way too warm like this. You start to sweat.
"W-why do we have to be l-like this, M-mistress?"
"I'll tell you why ... I need to feel cared for to fall asleep. Since you can't tell me a proper fairy tale I need you willing to be uncomfortable for me. This way I know someone cares about me, and I can fall asleep feeling safe."
"Y-yes, M-mistress," you say. How are you to fall asleep this way though?
"C-can I ask for one last favor?"
"Huh?" you say.
"Will you please say you love me?"
"W-what?"
"You don't have to mean it. I just need to hear someone say it before I can sleep. I'll tell you the same thing. P-please."
You have never said that to anyone in your life before. "I love you" is reserved for people who had husbands or parents. You have never had one of those things. The lying on top of you, asking you to say you love her ... It makes you want to push her off yourself and scream for her to let you be. Another part of you feels differently. It doesn't want to disappoint her.

>What do you do?

Maybe deep inside you actually do mean it.
>>
>>59846
>>59953
Do it! Also, I wonder if there are some fairy tale books or something around that we can learn a few stories from.
>>
>>59793

>>59846
She misses her mother, and uses maids to replace emty space. I am wondering what happened to previous maid...

>>
>>59953

Despite everything, you hear the words coming out of your mouth.
"I love you."
As you say them, and hear the tone of your voice, you wonder for a moment if you actually meant it. Throughout your orphanage life all the loneliness and suffering you knew was caused by people not having anyone want to be there for them. This had been your chance to do things right. To not make the mistake that your parents made with you. To be there for a girl whose mom can't be there for her right now, for whatever reason.
"I-I love you too," she responds.

After that you both just lay silently, trying to sleep. You're just about to become comfortable with her on top of you when she puts her arm over your face. At first you think you're going to choke, but by turning your face to the side you can breathe freely. Now you're lying even more uncomfortably though. If it was hard to sleep before, it's downright impossible now, you think to yourself. Her action makes you feel betrayed. All she needs to do to give you a good night's sleep, your first away from home in your life, is move her stupid arm. But she won't. You lie there, negative feelings simmering, until your affection for her starts turning into hate. Who does she think she is, abusing her maid like this? Somewhere far back in your mind is the knowledge that it could have been much worse, that it's normal to rape maids in France, but whatever affection you had for your captor is gone for now.

You come to yourself in the soft morning light. It seems mistress has moved the curtains at the bottom of the bed, letting the sun from the windows cover you while she sits in the shadow by the bedhead. She is still in her nightgown and on her ears she has some sort of strange, black dots connected by a bow going over the center of her head. She has an absent-minded look in her eyes and she is making small, rhythmical, weird movements - as if she dancing. Except there is no music. She notices you are awake.
"Awake finally?" she says, very loudly, and then removes the dots from her head.
"Do you want to hear?" she says, offering you the dots. Reluctantly you accept.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnS020eehT0

It's like nothing you've ever heard before. The music is moving so fast and there are so many strange sounds that at first you don't even recognize it as music, just noise. There is some sort of melody in it though, and a woman is singing ... You don't understand any of the lyrics. Could it be English? You think it sounds that way. While you listen you notice your mistress is very carefully studying your face for a reaction.
"W-what d-do you think of the song?" she says once it has finished.

>How do you respond to your mistress's taste in music?
>>
>>60394
You liked the rythm of the song.
>>
>>60394

>>
>>60394
First justify yourself, that you can wrongly rate the music, couse you didn't heared much music in your life, and never this type. Say that it is good, a little to fast for you, but rythm was good. And that you didn't understand what women was singing. (optional-)Show your interest, ask her to show other music, maybe a little slower, and with French lyrics.

I think we shouldn't too much false flatter her. We should find golden centre between honest/being yourself and servility/comforning her in every way.
Our behavior toward her should of course depend on her age, which we can only assume, due to the lack of information. She could be even older then us, and childlish nature could still be up, due to comfort life. So OP, please inform us.
>>
>>60661
We're 18.
>>
>>60677
I know. I was talking about mistress, ofc.
>>
>>60691
Oh. Sorry, my man.
>>
>>60713

"I'm sorry, Mistress," you say, "But I feel like I must preface whatever opinions I might have by stating that I am no expert in this matter. I haven't heard much music in my life, and the little music I have heard is very different from what you have just had me listen to. With that said," you proceed, though noticing mistress is now frowning, "I think it is good. A little too fast perhaps, for me, but the rhythm makes up for it at least."
Mistress calmly takes the dots away from your head and puts them down on the bed. The next moment you have been pushed off the bed by her feet. There is a loud slam as wood meets bone. You moan out in pain. It's not just the sudden fall itself, but the fact that you are covered in bruises and very sore after being slept on. This is just too much for you! You are about to start crying. You've just left your friends and everything you know to work here and you're being physically assaulted! This is outrageous! The next moment you hear the lantern from yesterday being picked up by mistress on the other side of the bed. You heart begins to pound. She is going to kill you! She comes around the bed, carrying the lantern.
"You stinking, stupid bitch!"
"Mistress! Please don't hurt me!!"
"I let you share my bed ... and I shared my heart with you, and all you can muster is such a dry reaction! I ought to ... I ought to ...!" she says, swinging the lantern over your head. On the dressing table nearby there is a tall, thin, black glass vase. Perhaps you can get to it and use it for defense. You hear the sound of a door handle being pulled down. Miss Diana steps in carrying Mistress's breakfast on a platter.

>Part 1/2

Suddenly memories come back to you of how the old manager at the orphanage would sometimes treat you; hitting you with wooden paddles, or that time when Pierre was bathed in ice cold water simply for staying up at night one time, reading with a small candle under his covers. You feel like you're under so much stress and pressure you begin to claw at your cheeks before the dam breaks and you start crying loudly and desperately as you begin shrinking into yourself, making yourself as small as you can.
"Please don't hurt me, please don't hurt me, please don't hurt," you keep chanting through your tears, almost as if in a trance.
You feel like your entire body is closing on itself, like a big clam, and soon even your back will break to make you even smaller. You have never felt so overwhelmed and stressed in your life and you can barely breathe through your tears. Behind you footsteps recede before you hear mistress ordering Diana to leave, the sound of the door closing, and then footsteps coming closer towards you again. It sounds like mistress places the tray with food on the bed. She goes down on her knees, hugging you. At first you flinch, but she's caressing your hair so affectionately. As you begin shaking and crying less, she kisses your forehead.
"Let's sit up," she says softly, as if speaking to a child that has hurt itself.
Reluctantly, possibly even because you are still afraid of her, you rise up as she does, sitting down on the edge of the bed where you let her embrace you for a long time. Her hand moves down from your hair to your arm, and she begins to caress it instead. It takes a while, but as you calm you begin to regain affection for her. You almost don't notice your arms going up to hug her back.
"I'm so sorry. So, so sorry. I didn't mean to upset you this much," she says. "If I knew you would react this way, I would never ..."
She moves away from you, looks you in your eyes and caresses your cheek. "I'm so, so sorry. You just have to understand that music means a lot to me ... Reacting so coldly to one of my favorite songs ... It made me feel like I was all alone in the world."
>>
>>61647

>Part 2/2

She looks sad for a moment, "Scaring you like this, you who have come all this way just to work for me ... That was going too far though. I don't know how I can make up for my actions ever. How I can ask for forgiveness." She seems to be genuinely sorry.
She grabs the tray with food beside her and places it on your lap. Most prominently there is a big plate with omelette there. It looks like it's been made with ham and green peppers. On a smaller plate there is a quarter of a baguette with cream cheese on it. There is also a big glass of fresh-looking orange juice. Additionally, without a plate, a single pear standing upright. Beside it, on the kind of very small plate you would put your teacup on, there are two squares of chocolate. You've only had chocolate a few times in your life before. You can feel your mouth watering. This tray the most delicious meal you have seen in your life.
"Usually I have a very big breakfast and then I don't eat until supper. I don't know why. I've always been like that. You know what though? I want you to eat my breakfast instead of going up with the servants and eating whatever they give you. And thus, to show you how truly sorry I am, I want you to let me suffer for you ... to be hungry for you all day. Will you let me? Will you, please?"

>What do you do?
>>
>>61665
As we know what the feel of going without food for a day, refuse, tell the story of why then eat one of the chocolates.
>>
>>61747
This. Also tell her how it would pain you even more to take her food from her.
>>
>>61747
>>61816
What these guys said.
>>
>>61665
Say something along the lines of: "I'm sorry Mistress, I had no idea what that song mean to you. I didn't want to offend you, but I wanted to be honest, and then you started yelling and all the memories came back and I lost control. I'm sorry for offending you, but I also can't let you starve yourself on my account. I don't want you to think that you have to suffer for my forgiveness, because you already have it. But, if it make you feel better, I could have a bite of the chocolate?"

Yes I am just as lonely as this post implies
>>
>>61665
Hmm... A large part of me feels like doing as she says is the best move. Don't, like, gloat about it, but be kinda like "if it will make you feel better." Besides, she'll probably feel worse if we deny her the punishment; we wouldn't be doing her any favors.
>>
>>61665
O-ok, i'm sorry i upset you so much mistress.
>>
>>61665
"I'm sorry I have to get dressed."
Put the plate away, go get dressed and have breakfast with the servants, planning to discuss with the staff how usual is it for that girl to be violent, getting hints how she should be approached and what happened to the previous maid.
>>
This
>>62531 and >>62531
Only I have impression that, whatever we do it can go wrong in this situation. Either acepting and refusing.
>>
>>65085
Bad idea. She will get upset for sure, for ignoring her like that. And on the side, that ould be just rude, and inappropriate for such pure maid we are.
>>
>>65089
I have a hunch that refusing is bad in this situation since that could be seen as refusing her in a way.
>>
>>65094
>She will get upset
She's already had unprompted fits, we now know we don't know how to keep her calm. We also know she has a pet golem and seems to have summoned some demons just to play weird music.
Getting some data on how to act in the future is the responsible action. It also let us rest a little after this exhausting night.
>>
>>65123
You are right, but we should get that data, but ignoring her just like that, will have bad consequences, maybe even kicking out of mansion. She earlier was angry about our dryness acording to her emotions(music in that example), and leaving like that would be dry like dessert. But later, asking other servants how to act with her is very good idea.
>>65104
And acepting could bring something bad too... If she have twisted mind, she could convice herself, that we enjoy her obsequiously, and get angry again. Every oprion may have wrong turnout in this situation, all is in OP's hands, how he will lead this.
>>
>>65127
I agree there is potential for everything to go to shit harder than we could possibly imagine, but I just think the best option right now is to show her that we will place her well-being above our own, while complying to at least part of her request.
>>
>>65717
Yea, yours suggestion( >>62531 )
was very good.
>>
>>66288
No, it sounds like a total lack of balls. Crazy girl abuses you all night long, gets ready to hit you after pushing you to the floor and you're *apologizing*?
Then you actually give a fuck about her guilt trip "my breakfast is one of the only two gigantic meals I eat, have it and pretend it's anything to me."
>>
>>66412
We're an orphaned girl turned maid, not some alpha dude bro. lack of balls is to be expected.
>>
>>66444
That's why I suggest getting away from this demon instead of letting her play her tricks on our mind.
>>
>>66475
We were bought, this is our livelihood. We don't even know of anyplace remotely close to here that we could flee to. It's a pointless endeavor, making the best with what we've got is the better option.

>Part 1/2

"Look, Mistress. I'm really, really sorry about the song, you know, but I thought you would appreciate my honesty. I admit I probably overreacted to your anger though ... It's just that, you know, my life has been hard. I grew up at an orphanage. Sometimes they would be so unfair and ruthless to us, and when you screamed at me ... It reminded me of some of my worst experiences there, and it made me really, really scared."
As you are talking your mistress studies you closely. There is a genuine kind of curiosity and surprise in her eyes, as if she is fascinated to discover there are so many words inside of you.
"It's precisely because I had such a childhood," you go on to say, "that I can't let you starve yourself on account of me. I know how hard it is to be hungry, and it's something no one should have to go through for any reason! But ... i-if it m-makes you feel b-better, may I have some of the ch-chocolate, please?" She looks down, her lips slightly apart, seeming to be in the midst of some profound realization. You decide to stay quiet. After a moment she calmly picks up the tray from your lap, walks over to the window, opens it and throws everything out. You can hear plates breaking, orange juice splashing and cutlery scattering. She comes back, sits down and hugs you again.
"I think us two are going to understand each other very well," she says in a soft voice. "You understand, like me, what a dangerous place the world is with everything you've been through. People who can trust each other, who can experience true love and friendship, is truly, truly rare. I think you still have a lot to learn from me though. Tell me, sweetheart, why do you think it is people ever hurt each other?"
"M-m-mistress ...," you say, unsure what she expects you to say.
"They do it for their own pleasure, to improve their own lot. So the basis of any true companionship must be self-abnegation, suffering, right? You have to prove that you can suffer for the other."
As she speaks, waving her hand to better get across her point, her sleeve falls down a bit on her arm. You flinch as you see it's covered in old scars, almost looking like dark, old wood.

>Part 2/2

"W-what a-are you s-saying, Mistress?" you say, wondering if she had some skin disease, although it also looks like the arms and legs of that woman, scary Elly, who ran away from the madhouse once and came to the orphanage. You cooked her soup once while she talked of God and Jesus Christ.
"I think the best way to start our friendship, which I'm sure will be very true and wonderful since none of us have anyone else here, is to suffer for each other. So none of us shall eat until supper!" She leans over and kisses your cheek. "Now, even though we're going to be best friends, you're still my personal maid. So be good and dress me up. I'm certainly happy I won't have to be dressed by Diana anymore!" She makes a grimace at the thought.
You stand up, reluctantly. Your legs still feel shaky, and hurt - almost like during a fever. You wonder if it's because of how scared you were earlier, or if it's from all the pounding you've been taking. You walk over to your mistress's closet and open it up. There is so much clothing inside and it all looks pretty to you.
"It seems to be overcast outside, so it's probably going to be cold ... Get me the thick, light blue dress. There should also be an identical one for you hanging right beside it. I know you have a maid uniform, but I prefer my personal maid to wear the same thing as myself! It makes me feel like we're closer! Almost like twins!"
You feel a strong pang of sadness. Mistress's dresses are truly beautiful, but you were so proud of your maid's uniform yesterday and, despite everything, wearing it again was one of the few things you still had to look forward to.

>What do you do?
>>
>>67028
Comply with her wishes. With how strange she's acting, now seems like an inopportune time to rebel.
>>
>>67028
Do as she says. Right now it's best to observe the situation and figure out exactly where we stand before making any sort of move.

Sounds like a good idea.
>>
>>67218
Might just be a bad time, or people stopped paying attention for a bit. The fact that the first two replies are very similar and haven't met any resistance could indicate people are satisfied with those and don't feel the need to give input as a result.
>>
>>67028
I hope you're trying to make her sound insane.
>>
>>67247
This.
I often don't comment on a quest when the choices are fine.
>>
>>67028
Wear the dress, of course. Why pass up the chance to have a friend in this strange, new place?
>>67218
I think a lot of people are simply busy this time of day. I'm personally enjoying the story (although the anachronisms were a bit weird. I imagine there's a reason, so whatever).
>>
>>67028
Asking for not chanking to mistress clothes, can be taken as insult to her clothes. I don't think that maid clothes are better then mistress, so we should agree with her demand/proposition.
>>67180
As I analised for now, we stand for her as replacement of empty space-no mother, probably no father on her side, probably even no friends. Also- the scars. Maybe father abuse her? She cleary is harm child(we still don't know her age btw). We are here to fulified her desire for friendship and love.
>>

Anyway, her parents seemed like good people, so it might be step-mom or something.

Polish. Is my writing enough bad, that my non-english roots, are easly visible? Anyway, sorry for all mistakes. I must admit that I'm helping myself out with translators. My writing is affected also from that, that even in my first language I can easly forget norlmal words, and others language-related problems?
Asking once more:how much is this visible, and how much my writing hurt your eyes?
>>
>>67426
It's easy enough to tell what you're saying, but it is pretty apparent that English is not your first language. It's not a huge issue at all though, so don't worry too much about it. Spending time amongst native English speakers will only help after all.
>>

>Part 1/2

Dressed identically you follow your mistress into the right wing of the house. It makes you feel self-conscious to be dressed the same, but a new confusion takes away your attention: When your mistress said you were going to visit her mother's grave, you expected her to go outside. You imagined some gravestone by the lake behind the mansion. You are surprised to find yourselves keep walking past the big staircase with the murals.

Dressing your mistress had been strange. You had dressed enough younger people at the orphanage not to be very worried by the act itself, but despite all the ways you feared and were even disgusted by her, sometimes your eyes catching a glimpse of her navel or breasts while dressing her would get that powerful feeling of really wanting to be her friend going again. You tried to ignore it, to tell yourself that, despite what she had told you about friendship and trust, the way she was treating you -- denying you breakfast for example -- rather made you trust her less than think this was a deeper kind of friendship. After all, this woman had randomly pushed you off her bed, made you sleep with all her weight on top of you, and would sometimes say things with a logic that made you have to fight hard not to frown or even laugh out loud. This wasn't about you though. Nothing was. You were just a poor girl employed by her. It was simply your duty to please her the best way you could. Perhaps later, when you got to know her better, you could find some way to compromise.
>>
>>67550

>Part 2/2

Following your mistress through several hallways, though not nearly as many as with Diana yesterday, you come to a sort of atrium, walled in by glass with just the open sky above. It is like a strange, little garden in the middle of the mansion. Mistress opens a glass door and steps outside. You follow and look up. A single bird passes up in the sky above. Mistress hurries to close the door behind you. The atrium is about twice the size of her bedroom and contains several green bushes along the glass walls. A single big tree with strikingly yellow leaves shadow a single gravestone in the center which spells out, "Julissa Huxtable, 1992-1879". You squint. You must be reading the numbers the wrong way. Mistress walks over to some sort of blue, plastic chest in one of the corners and gets a bucket and some washing cloth from it. Beside the chest, there is a small pillar, about the height of your waist, with a faucet on it. Your mistress fills the bucket with water and then goes over to the gravestone. Mistress lowers herself on her knees, in her beautiful dress, and begins to slowly and carefully clean the gravestone which already seems perfectly clean to you. Is this something she does every day?

You walk back and forth for a while while she cleans. Your hurting limbs want you to sit down somewhere, but there's nowhere to and you can't disturb your mistress. Finally she empties the bucket in some of the bushes and starts putting all the things back into the blue, plastic chest. You are relieved, desperate to get away from here. Not because you don't like it, there is a certain serenity to it and the tree with the yellow leaves really gives it a special atmosphere, but because your legs hurt. Instead your mistress goes back to the grave. She goes down on her knees again and stays like that for a while. Ten minutes, fifteen minutes. She begins to cry. You stay put though. Her crying begins to intensify now. Sounding more and more desperate, almost pleading.

>What do you do?
>>
>>67511
>Even if you would roasted me, I would probably not give a fuck much
I honestly love when people attempt English, just because it's so funny.
You probably feel the same about non-Poles speaking Polish, huh?
>>
>>67426
Well, your syntax is a pretty clear indicator that you're not a native speaker. That can't really be helped too much, though. On the bright side, your English plenty intelligible.
>>
>>67561
Stand awkwardly and be silent.
>>
>>67567
Same, most people sounds funny when they try to speak language whole different from his own language.
>>
>>67561

Maybe say some prayer for the dead.

>>

>>
>>67650

Well, that's how a voting system works. Aren't you curious about figuring out all the mysteries?
>>
>>67630
Consoling will involve hackneyed pharses and words, that she probably already knows.
>>67604 is more accurate, and secure. Just be there for her.
She needs emotional support, not reasonable.
>>
>>67712
I can get behind that.
>>
>>67712
Fair enough.
>>
>>67650
I just don't want to get beat.
We all know she's crazy, though.
>>
>>67561
Silently hug her
>>
There has been some confusion about her age, so I will give this hint: A girl who isn't 18+ wouldn't go *alone* to an orphanage to find her new maid.

>>67604
>>67712

With hesitant steps you slowly walk over to her and get down on your knees. Your dress gets dirtied too, but obviously one's heart is a lot more important. Her almost hysterical crying turns to normal crying and finally to sobbing. You've done something right. You wonder about putting a hand on her shoulders, maybe saying a few words for the dead. The way she reacted to your poem makes you think twice about it though. What if it ruins what you've achieved?
"I ... I k-knew y-you w-were a real friend," she says.
You turn towards her. Her blonde hair is all over her face, some of it sticking to it because of all her tears. The ground in front of her is spattered in wet spots, looking rather like tears rather than washing bucket water. She leans towards you putting her head on your shoulder. Maybe she isn't so bad? She's just a girl without a mother. Besides ... You could never tire of the way she smells of cakes and pastry. It's then you notice the long knife in her hand.
"Now comes the hard part," she says, "Washing a grave is nothing. I must make a true showing of suffering for my mother." She holds up the knife. "The other maid would do this for me because I would always cut too deep and it would be a big hassle. My maid always knew how to cut right though. I, myself, when I cut; I cut too shallowly with shaking, weak hands. It's the part of me that doesn't love mother. That is why I think it is better to cut too deep than not at all."

>Your first instinct is to stop this, but then again, she is holding a knife and you know she is unpredictable. It might turn dangerous. Perhaps you better make the cuts, make sure she doesn't cut too much. Maybe it's best to have as little to do with this as possible though. This is disgusting! What do you do?
[WARNING! This is a critical scene. The wrong choice may lead to this story's first Bad Ending. Think through this carefully. A famous psychologist once said, "There is a logic in the madness of even the worst of my patients."]
>>
>>68049
Well shit... I have no idea how to handle situations like this, but i'll try.

>Ask if you can do the cutting and do not cut at the wrist, but instead the other side of the arm, maybe say something along the lines of that her mother probably already knowing that she cares, but still doing this for her anyways.

With time we might make her not do this, but saying no now will only lead to bad things.
>>
>>68049
We could always cut ourselves with her. Gotta show that we are dedicated in our friendship of mutual suffering.
>>
>>68049
Remember that we see thing from the future, and oculltics things(if I remember good-books and painting), so maybe time travels or something like that is connected to some sort of blood magic, and what she want to do now is part of it? It almost imposible that child came up with cuting by itself, it must come from her mother, or maybe father. That is merly possible that mom convice her to cuts just for showing love, so occultistic teory is possible.
If it is part of occultism, maybe cuting deep enough and on the wrist is necessary(. I though that doing so, we easly might end up killing her, but it turned out that wrist cutting is about 6% lethality. If we made sure that bandages are around, she is not likely to die.
>>
>>68049
I will go for a cut, but we will have the same problem as mistress had -shaking, weak hands, and hesistance in cuting. Of course we need some breaks we don't want to cut her hand off(not possible). It worries me that we don't know what happened to others maids, and I have bad feeling. But she wants us as friends, so she wouldn't just brings us on the deathbed, and even, she wouldn't care to form realation, that will be for 1 day. So being obient without killing her, schouldn't end bad I think.
>>
>>68049
I would also ask her to maybe call servant to assist me in cuting. We don't need to rush in spilling blood we can wait for servant to come, to assist, and with some bandages, medical If she says that wasn't requestet on past cuttings, say that this is our first time, and you don't want to screw up.
>>
>>68049
I vote for a cut, but with all possible preparations(bandages, servant, medicaments, some bag for vomits(we didn't eat anything today, we are weak, we wll surly throw up...)). Don't cut yourself it is her sufering for her mother, you are not involved, trying to may have bad results.

>Part 1/2

"Dearie," you say with your most loving voice, lifting your hand to pat the side of her head as she leans against you, "you needn't do this for your mother. I'm sure she would never want her dear, sweet daughter to be hurt," you say. "It's better that I do it than you do it though," you are quick to add. You wished you could have seen her reaction to you suggesting that this was unnecessary, but you couldn't the way you are sitting. She hands you the knife. You take it into your hand. It's such a shame, you think to yourself as you take her arm, to cut such beautiful, pale, soft youth. You sigh. Then you get to action. You wonder for a moment whether to cut on the other side of her arm, the one without scars.
"Dooon't," she says.
"Isn't it less dangerous on the top of your arm?" You don't know where the idea comes from.
"No. Don't do it on that side, it'll just be harder for me to hide the scars when I need to. Some people don't understand ...," she says, shaking her head lightly as if this is a strange thing. "As long as you cut sideways on the inner side, I should be okay. Do it just enough to draw blood, but not deep enough for it to be serious." You swallow. You're not sure how deep you can cut. You'll just try to cut as little as you can while still drawing blood. You're not trying to achieve anything with this except to protect her as much as you can, after all. Carefully you begin to slit her skin. At first you don't press hard enough, leaving only a long, white line where you drew the knife. The next time you get it right. Scarlet liquid seeps out between the sides of the blade. You can feel her squirming beside you, but she keeps quiet, not making any complaints.
"More," she whispers.
You move the knife down, making a second horizontal cut. And another. And aother.
"More," she says. "For mommy."
Her entire arm is running with blood now. It's hard for you to see all your own cuts because it's all so covered in blood. So are your own hands.
"Is this enough?" you ask.
"More."
"I-I c-can't."
"MORE!"
>>
>>70122

>Part 2/2

You keep going until you have cut five times. You wonder if you messed up, and if you didn't - how much she would have hurt herself if she had done it then. She stands up, blood dripping down on the ground as she dizzily walks to the pillar with the faucet, and washes her arm. You find bandages in the green, plastic chest that had the bucket, after she points you to it, inside a small, white box with a red cross on it. With her arm clean, you quickly bandage the cuts.
"Please clean my blood from the ground too," she says, standing pale by the door out of the atrium. "It doesn't look right with mommy's grave there."
You fill the bucket she used to clean the grave and splash some of it on the ground, washing away her blood. It will dry on its own. Together you leave the little garden the way it looked when you came. She staggers, leaning on you as you slowly walk back the same hallways you came. You feel so sorry for her. When you return to her bedroom, she looks even more pale than before and her bandages have become wet with blood. She moves the curtains of her bed away and climbs inside, closing them behind her. You wait for a long while to see if she will come back, but it seems like she is going to be there for a while. If there was anything you wanted to do, but couldn't do in her presence, this is likely your chance.

>What do you do?
[Congratulations. You're safe for now. Don't relax yet though. Your trials as a maid have just begun.]

You walk over to the servant's closet and sit down on the bed. Despite already being in pain, it seems like your body has been hiding back just what a burden the grave visit has been for your sore and hurt legs, as a lot more comes now in a single huge wave. You cover your face and cry silently. Your mistress is completely insane! This has been both physically and mentally exhausting, and you've only known her since this morning, when she woke you up with her scream. Is it going to be like this all the time? How are you going to handle it? Though mistress can be brutal and unpredictable, there is also a lot of vulnerability and weakness to her though. She seems, at the end of the day, to be motivated by innocent feelings like loneliness and sorrow. It's hard to say though. You don't want to think that badly of your mistress, but often you have wondered what happened to her former maid.

After resting for twenty minutes or so you decide to go back to the drawing room to look at more books. You make sure to leave the door to your mistress's bedroom open, not wanting to leave her by herself. All these strange things you have been seeing and this cutting ... Could it be connected? Maybe you are grasping at straws, but you decide to look for books on blood. The only thing you are able to find is a big, old tome on hematology. You try to read it, but it's too boring. You read an entire page of old, academic French and the only interesting thing you learn is that blood makes up 7% of your body weight and that the first blood transfusion ever was done in 1665 between two dogs. You close the book a bit too fast and it sends dust swirling up into your face. You sneeze and stay quiet for a bit, hoping it didn't wake up or disturb mistress. Nothing happens. Working up the courage you walk over to the strange, special-looking books wrapped in pictures. You find a very thin, shiny, white little book without a drawing put over the cover. It's almost like a pamphlet of some kind. You skim through it. A Japanese theory of blood is described which says that people have different personalities depending on their blood type. You don't know what either your own or your mistress's blood type is, so it's unlikely it will help you much.

The door to the hallway opens. You are overwhelmed with fear. What if it's the metallic creature? It's only Miss Diana again though. She is carrying a tray with a cup of dark yellow tea. There is a slice of lemon on a separate platter. You wonder if tea counts as a food. She seems to be heading for mistress's bedroom. Maybe you should stop her from disturbing her. This might also give you time to ask some questions. On the other hand, you are new here. Maybe you should just see what happens.

>What do you do?

Wait.
Maybe ask about your mistress' "habits."

"Excuse me ... Miss Diana?" She stops in her tracks, though still not looking you in the eyes. "I wanted to ask you some questions ... About mistress." Your voice turns to whispers.
"Mistress does as mistress wants," she says. You feel like you've heard her say something similar before.
"I mean, you must know about ... about the bloodletting? And what about the previous maid? I keep worrying what happened to her."
"Blood falls where it must fall," Miss Diana says.
"M-miss Diana ...?"
You hear the sound of bed curtains coming apart. Oh no. You should probably not have talked about mistress this way so close to her bed without closing the door. What in the world were you thinking? If she heard what you said, what will happen now?
"Miss Diana," you hear mistress's voice, commanding and confident now. "Come here with my tea this instant."
Miss Diana goes into the bedroom. You follow her. Mistress looks better now, though she's still wearing her bandages. She picks up the teacup and supports it with a flat palm under it. Miss Diana keeps holding up the tray.
"Tea, obviously, is not food. Miss Diana, you will take the lemon with you."
Miss Diana nods and leaves. You're alone with mistress now, waiting for her wrath. You almost startle when mistress begins to drink her tea with a loud, slurping noise. You've seen some strange eating and drinking habits at the orphanage, but nothing can compare to this.
"Miss Diana is from a madhouse. They cut holes in her brain to make her stop washing her hands. She is very dumb now, but very harmless and obedient. My dad always took house staff from orphanages, madhouses, poor houses and the like ... He believed only misfortune separated us from the poor and gave a helping hand when he could. Honestly, I'm not so sure myself ... But I try to follow in his tradition. I still believe that it is good to help others. To suffer for others ..." Her voice turns almost into a regretful whisper as she says the last part. "I want you to massage my feet while I drink my tea," she says loudly and confidently again. "Afterwards you shall be my footstool while I read." She takes another long, loud slurp of her tea.

>Surely you're not her personal slave. You're a maid! What do you do?
>>

Do as she wishes, she's probably testing you or might be mad if she heard you.
>>

This.

It might be demeaning, but provoking her is not in our best interest.
>>
>>75045
Do as she says.

Also I'd like to add, I wouldn't blame you for quitting if there are only three people. You're literally the best writer I've seen on this board so far and it'd be a shame for your talent to go to waste on a handful of people. It's kinda sad how everyone flocks to the "muh dick" fast-paced quests like Waifu Quest and that one about the psychopathic girl. Long, thought out quests like this one deserve more attention.

You've learned your lesson not to displease her long ago. It's barely anything to consider anymore. It's not like you have anywhere else to go or anything. And you've seen what she can do, after what happened with the song and everything. With some rest it's easier for you to face it though. That you have become something like this unstable young woman's slave. Going down on your knees and crawling over, you uncertainly take her little foot into your hand. Hopefully she will be happy with how you do it, just rubbing your hand into it. It's the only way you know to do it, having watched Anne do it to George as they talk in bed when no one's around to keep the two teens away from each other. Surprisingly it isn't too bad. Mistress's foot is very soft. Still, every time she slurps it's like someone pulls their nails down a blackboard.
"You asked Miss Diana about the cutting ..."
You swallow.
"It's only what I said. It's how I show my love to my mother. It might be hard for you to understand, but I truly believe those things I say. I never feel as loved as when someone hurts themselves for me, so I think mother must feel that way too. When you say she wouldn't want me to, that is only because she wants to hurt herself for me. Do you understand? Love is self-torture."
Her words give you goosebumps. You wonder if she should be in a madhouse.
"As for the other maid ... I was too much for her."
You can almost feel color draining from your skin.
"We split on amicable terms though. I got her a post at a friend of my uncle's. Don't worry, dear Colette. Everything is new and scary to you. I promise things are not as bad as you might think. I am very reasonable and, like my father, I genuinely care for the people around me. Actually if you have other questions about me, or this house, I'll give you any answers you want."
You're starting to feel a bit of relief, even getting kind of cozy underneath her, rubbing her foot, when she startles you by slurping her tea once again.

>What do you ask mistress to explain?
>>
>>75302
Ask about her family's history maybe? How they came to live here and what they actually do.
>>
>>75331
Seconded.

Thanks! Feedback like that means a lot to me. I guess it would probably be a better use of my time to keep working on my other writing (which I promise is a lot more carefully written than my posts on here sometimes are, lol), but then again you don't get the same kind of immediate reactions like you do on here. It's strangely addictive. I'll probably not stop completely just yet anyway, but I might slow down.

seconding what the guy said, keep the trip when you post other writings
>>
>>75302
Ask about the future books
>>
>>75302
Ask her about that books
>>
>>75331
I'll support that
>>75474
That's definitely understandable, OP.
Also, I have to agree with woU79TjZ. I've enjoyed the nature of this quest as well as your writing, an it's nice to have a quest that isn't smut: the quest.

I'm making all the post so far into a PDF file that can be read like a novel for the next thread, and fixing up some of my worst mistakes (switching tense) ... Seeing exactly how much I've written so far (11,000 words) is making me feel kind of autistic ... I guess you can never have enough practice.

Making quests into a "book" format can be difficult since anons can sometimes play the character a bit outside what's established, making the MC look like she/he easily changes his/her mind all the time.
So if you manage it well i'll be impressed!

Ahh, I see what you mean. For some reason it seems to be turning out well though. I think it's because I've made up explanations every time you've asked for something strange. Like for the masturbation, I made up the stuff with Aurèlie's comforting... It won't be completely like a novel though since I'm leaving in the choices and a short summary of what was the decided.

I guess next time you could try to think of something so strange that I won't be able to keep Colette in-character ...

I vote that in addition to asking about the weird books and the gameboy, also asking about the backwards dates on the grave.

Second that. I really want to know
