In the last chapter, Han Fu arrives at Chen after having lost his home and Zheng Li gives him refuge. You denounce Yuan Shao who demands you pay tribute and cooperation. Recruiting Wang Yi, you attack Runan where you defeat Du Ji on the field and siege his city for months until his food supplies run out. Despite initial misgiving, you manage to convince Du Ji to join your cause after you defeat his army and capture Runan city.

This quest is an RPG-styled game following the Three Kingdoms period of China and the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guangzhong. You play as a fictional character following through the events of the Three Kingdoms and hopefully rising to become an important player of with the famous figures. You will start off as a no-name, average character who can rise up through effort. Most of the characters and story will follow the events of the novel first, history second, the RoTK games third, and only a very small part will come from the Dynasty Warriors games (Mostly character personalities if suitable).

The goal of the game is to create an interesting story more so than win. While this game will not be harsh, mistakes and carelessness may result in the loss of your faction and even the death of your character. Sometimes circumstances may be unfair as not even Zhuge Liang could not save his kingdom after Shu lost Jing province. Still, thinking and common sense should get you through. Whatever the case, my goal is to hopefully see you create an interesting story more than conquering the entirety of China.

After capturing Runan you call for an orderly takeover with no looting or harassing to occur. Those who would break the law would face the full force of the law. The captured Du Ji is put on administrative duties and Lu Qian is given a small minor rank as part of your military forces. Despite having recruited the two to your force, you have some initial hesitation. Past lords have executed their former enemies and their entire families to ensure no rebellion occurs and you wonder if such deeds were done with cause. Will Du Ji rebel in the future?

Your concerns are met with Wang Yi who gives you advice that might be iniquitous.

“If you are concerned with Du Ji's loyalties, then allow my family to keep an eye on Du Ji's family at all times. I will command my family to make friends with Du Ji's to see they do not misbehave. Commit secure guards around Runan as well and make sure Du Ji will not rebel in fear of his family's fortune.”

Do you take Wang Yi's advice?

>listen to Wang Yi, secretly place Du Ji's family on watch
>trust Du Ji, no such measures need to be taken
>>
>>537932
>>trust Du Ji, but we should verify his trust first
He's said he wants to see where my ambition leads. But having your family watch them is still a smart idea.

Just don't do anything stupid. If he does his job, there's no reason to threaten him, or even suggest he's under watch.

Also, yay! Time for Wu Quest!
>>
>>537945
Friendly reminder. No one is going to.
>>
>>537932
>>listen to Wang Yi, secretly place Du Ji's family on watch
At the very least this serves as a means to give him some support and help build up Wang Yi's power.

He'll be important in bringing Runan under control, and support from another countryman, even if it's to keep an eye on him will help.

You heed Wang Yi's advice and you put Du Ji's family on secret watch. Wang Yi orders several of her family members to feign friendship with Du Ji's own clan and to keep tab on their moves. You also order several guards of your new city to keep an eye out on any strange movements. Should Du Ji ever rebel or plan anything, you can easily take his family hostage.

Several days after capturing Runan you hear that there was a certain young noble that went around speaking ill of you and your force. He called you a tyrant and a bringer of trouble, criticizing your capture of Runan and your plans to wage war further. He was apparently very vocal and spoke aloud not only to his friends and family but the general population as well.

Hao Xian promptly had the man captured, executed, and had his head displayed over Runan's prison.

The noble's family has voiced complaints to you, saying it was an unfair punishment. What do you do?

>bring Hao Xian to you and reprimand him
>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified
>>
>>537979
>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified

>>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified
>>
>>537979
>go to the family and try to make the fullest of the situation.

Understanding why this guy did what he did, convincing the family that they are retarded in some aspect, compensating the. In some way and gaining more alliances is the best bet.
>>
>>537979
>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified
We are harsh but fair
>>
>>537979
>bring Hao Xian and reprimand him
Someone says a few harsh words about us and we have him executed?
>>
>>537988
Dude, it's ancient fucking China. Don't bring your 21st century values here
>>
>>537979
>>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified
He spoke of hating war, but wanted to instigate it. Rather than talking to me he yelled at anyone in hopes to start a riot. Blood was shed and rather than trying to prevent it, he wanted to instigate it.

>>537988
Guy was shouting at everyone, insulting us and likely trying to get a riot going. If we did nothing it would prove him right. If we ordered him silenced, he'd still call us a tyrant. It was a cruel action, but damned if the noble whelp couldn't have tried other means than trying to antagonize the one who won the war.
>>
>>537994
agree, cruel but necessary
>>
>>537979
>>bring Hao Xian to you and reprimand him

It was a bit far but probably for the best, would do to make amends with the family.
>>
>>537979
>Hao Xian did the right thing, the punishment was justified
>>
>>537995
Yes. Still, we should build up some infrastructure here, help the common people out, get farm production and the market up and running. Drafting people would be a dumb idea right now, so any additional soldiers we'd need to get through funds.

Might be a good idea to make a training school or inns to draw in people. Actually, did any of our troops rank up? Do we even have any newbies left?
>>
>>537979
Publicly reprimand Hao but secretly say thanks
>>

Infrastructure is a good thing, yes. Also can agree on the soldiers as well, only the ones that volunteered from taking the city and those that we are willing to pay.

You see no reason to reprimand or punish Hao Xian for his actions. In times such as these rebellions and insurrections are common against invaders. You have already ordered that no looting or harassment of the population should occur; if people are willing to take advantage of that and spread discontent then they should be punished accordingly. Besides, such an action shows that your force's strength and commitment to order. You tell the noble's family you will hear no more of their complaints and that the young man should not have attempted to cajole the people.

Your actions bring more order around Runan, but the people think less of your benevolence.

With Runan captured, you now possess two commanderies in your terrtiroy. Runan commandery is a large territory but not remarkable by any means. It mainly acts as a gateway of small trade between Xu province and Jing so some commerce comes and goes. Though Runan may not be prosperous, a talented governor could potentially improve it vastly. The city of Runan is medium in size and holds a sizable population.

You should now allocate your officers and a governor to one of your two commanderies while you take control of one. You should choose someone trustworthy and who you know is a good leader as governor, and you should give him a mix of administrators and generals to ensure he can properly run the commandery. Which commandery do you keep control of and which officers do you assign to the other?

Focus on governing...
>Chen
>Runan

>choose a governor and officers for the other commandery
>>
At some point I think it's best if we apologize to Du Ji for basically calling him a punk bitch and taking his shit. Not in a "I'm so sorry please forgive me" per say, but more of a "Hey, sorry for calling you a punk bitch, it was the heat of the moment" way.
>>
>>538032
>>Runan
>>
>>538032

Also you guys are retarded for just letting the people think that we are assholes that much more. Shame, we could have prevented that if we talked to the family.

Let the dude we took over govern his own city. He's earned rest and a chance to redeem himself
>>
>>538032
>Directly on the border of Cow Cow Land.

>>538033

>>
>>538032
Runan and Han Fu or Du Ji can watch Chen.
>>
God damn come on guys runan is already developed and can only change so much with our input. If we have control over Chen which is basically a blank slate even now we can build it ground up to be a badass city with amazing fundamentals
>>
>>538032
Focus on governing Runan.

Send Hao Xian to govern Chen as governor, send Han Fu and Yang Jing to assist.
>>
>>538032
>>Chen in long term, Runan for now.
It's going to be our corner stone, but for the first while I say we put some focus on helping Runan out.

As is, Han Fu, Hao Xian, Lu Fan, and Song Qian for Chen, while the rest stick to Runan right now. Those four are better established there and Hao Xian leaving the city might help calm it down.

Du Ji and Song Qian as subordinates.

This
>>
>>538085
Wang yi would be her best at Runan where she has family, support, and a job to do. Either way, we need 4 people in Chen at least for now. Hopefully we can increase our roster some more.
>>
>>538083
But, yeah... This if we agree on sending four.
>>
>>538092
It is four. I'm wary on sending other of our trusted officers away from Runan if Du Ji and Lu Qian try something
>>
>>538095
Ah, must have missed where it said that. I'll read better next time.
>>
>>538095
Really all that I would want from this is to spend time with du Ji and get to know him better as a person so we can fix the mistakes we made in conquering the city in the best way while also approving the relations of du Ji with us, it's important because he is obviously competent. We don't need competent people at our throats unless they deserve it.
>>
As an aside, looking at the map and with the cities Sun will get, we seem to be in a decent situation. Sun can start expanding west, we take the east and south to take trade. With that one city near Chen we have support in case any of the central powers try anything.
>>
>>538112
It seems like Zheng Li will end up in historical Wu and Sun Jian will end up around historical Shu?
>>
Did our troops and Du Ji's troops advance in ability after the siege?
>>
>>538119
Most likely. Sun Jian will certainly have a strong chance for Dong Zhou land. Meanwhile, we can establish the south and deny Yuan Shu land while being in a good position to handle Cao Cao's forces.
>>
You place Hao Xian in charge of Chen commandery and you commit Han Fu, Song Qian, and Yang Jing under his command. Hao Xian has a balanced view on governance and leans towards the militaristic side. He will focus on keeping a sizeable army and maintaining strict order and discipline.

The Summer season is nearly over. Unfortunately you did not capture Runan fast enough to take taxes, but you still receive gold from Chen. In the following tax seasons the gold from Chen will be put in Hao Xian's use so you should take heed in spending your gold and your focus of improvement.

What actions do you take for Summer? The fruits of your labor will be cut slightly due to having spent a portion of the season besieging Runan.

825 gold, purchases are free action
>recruit soldiers: 1 gold for 1
>improved spears: 1 gold for 1
>improved armor: 1 gold for 1
>improved crossbows: 1 gold for 1
>horses: 1 gold for 1
>rams: 100 gold for 1
>catapults: 100 gold for 1
>warships: 100 gold for 1 (can hold 300 men)
>>
>>538144
Focus on repairing any damage done to Runan.
>>
>recruit soldiers
500 of them
>improved crossbows
200 of these
>catapults
1 more for good measure
>>
>>538144
>recruit soldiers: 1 gold for 1
500
>improved armor: 1 gold for 1
300
>>
>>538147
Yep. Let's just do this
>>
>>538144
Use some money for infrastructure, farms, and shops. Help the commoners out. Spend some money on Armor and Spears. I'd like our elite unit to be fully armed, armored and horsed so they can be ready for the battle.
>>
>1catapult
>1war ship
>200 troops
>200 crossbows
>>
>>538147
Repairs plus building up infrastructure and some goodwill with the people wouldn't hurt
>>
>>538144
500 soldiers, and the rest on building up Runan.

We still need more soldiers, even if we want to help with Runan.
>>
>>538144
We will likely need to make sure we have more catapults this time around for when we fight the next siege battle.

How many Warships do we have already? That will likely be important too
>>
>>538178
1 it's in the pastebin in the op.
>>
Hey arpeggio plz add catapult to forces pastebin
>>
>>538181
Speaking of the pastebin is it 1000 troops at trained and 950 at adept? There are two adept sections.
>>
>>538184
>>538188
Fixed.
>>
>>538181
Ah thanks

I'm going to suggest we
>Raise 500 more troops
>Build two more catapults
>Build one more warship

At least three catapults sounds like it should be able to handle well in a siege, while the warships will likely prove useful what with all the big rivers in Jing province
>>
>>538144
500 troops
Buy horses with the rest
>>
Right so about rebuilding runan. The first is obviously the walls, those need to be restoned and slated. The site of the battle could be torn up and replanted with fresh grass and crops to keep the ground well maintained. Restocking the roads with slate and sand along with additional bamboo linings is obviously a must. We need dat infrastructure. Also speaking of which, additional posts and towers that function the same way in Chen that seperate the fields and act as police and trading stations seems like a good idea. A small stables in each should drastically improve messenger times. They could also be fitted with additional housing for potential soldiers, food and the homeless.

Anyone want to add anything?
>>
>>538147
Backing

and then

>>538198
>>
>>538198
Probably a better idea for troops. Still shooty too.
>>
>>538211
Could have the roads to Chen fortified. Start up trade, make some inns to draw in more people and inport the wine. Considering the size of the land, horses and cattle might be good here alongside farms.
>>
>>538211
Oh I forgot, about the efficiency. So those stations can be sold at a premium rent to bisuness owners and nobles and can turn them into their own villages and manors. Which should effectively greater the growth of the city as well as provide extra money. In addition a new code of law would be needed to distinguish these people from officials and always have state presence at these stations that fall under direct control of the military and by extension administration of the state.

That should do it.

+500 Adept soldiers, -500 gold
+1 catapult, -100 gold

You decide to focus on repairing the damage done to Runan when you attacked for the end of Summer. Some of the walls of Runan city have been damaged when you attacked the city. You restore the walls back to their proper state. Furthermore you make sure every soldier that perished gets a proper funeral and the people that lose their family are properly compensated. Support for you in Chen is heightened.

As Fall comes, you hear news that Sun Jian has succeeded in taking Wuling commandery. In the meantime Sun Ce sucessfully defeated Liu Biao's invading force despite only having half of Liu Biao's numbers, and in the field no less rather than holing up at a city or fort. Sun Jian sends word to you that he will attack Liu Biao at the Summer of the next year. Sun Jian will be taking up the brunt of the attack while you only need to attack Jiangxia. You predict about 5000 professional soldiers will be on the defense while Liu Biao will likely conscript some additional few thousand militia.

News arrives from the capital. Wang Yun and Lu Bu were defeated by Li Jue and Guo Si. Lu Bu took to the field and managed to score a few victories, but using the mountainous terrain and valleys, Li Jue and Guo Si send a secret force to take Luoyang by surprise. Wang Yun was executed, the Emperor is now under the control of Dong Zhuo's former generals, and Lu Bu has fled with the remainder of his troops. Apparently Lu Bu is serving Yuan Shao, fighting bandits and rebel forces around his territory.

You have some free time and you decide to take the opportunity to visit an officer. Who do you visit?

Deciding it would best to raise your friendship with Du Ji as to ensure his loyalty, you pay him a visit. You find the man at the local prison administrative station where he is dutifully working. At the moment you visit, you see him talking with a few guards and a prisoner kneeling on the guard.

“So this man attempted to steal food from the local vendor?” you hear Du Ji say. “Then his punishment shall be three months of labor. Send him as a farmhand where he shall toil in the fields. He will be given at least one meal a day and shall be treated properly but thoroughly. Thus he shall learn the value of hard work instead of stealing, and if he decides to steal again his life shall be forfeit.”

The guards bow and take away the prisoner. Du Ji goes back to his working on papers at his desk until you step in. When he sees you, Du Ji rises and bows to you.

“Ahh my Lord. To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?”

>>
>>538328
They are great warriors, but as is we only have 2 administrators and we are picking up a third city if all goes well. The main issue with the southern lands is that compared to the central plains, its under developed. Cao Cao and any in that area are going to have an advantage in terms of supplies, and money. We need good administraters to turn all that land into usuable assets. If we can do it right, we'll be in a stronger position.

>>538333
>say you came to discuss matters of state and affairs

Righto, so this is building off of >>538211 >>538220

So what your seeing is the separation of the post stations and killing fields.
Key:
>red=city
>blue=the kind of thing I was talking about in those recaps
>black=raised roads that clearly stand out even during shit weather, raised and drained to resist flooding and enemy attacks, can be fortified easily to block off and force troops to either funnel through the roads or get butchered in the killing fields
>yellow=unraised roads that serve only to pull together the rural community and development as well as section off the farming land for easier management of crop production. These get covered when flooded.
>green=forward preliminary fortifications that are only erected in the border stations, only act to break up enemy assaulting forces and force them into the main event.

Do I need to explain further?

“Greetings Du Ji,” you say as you sit before his table. “I came to discuss matters of state and affairs. I must say that I do not fully know how to properly govern and administrate the commandery of Runan as much as you. I was hoping to take your advice.”

“Ahh well...” Du Ji gives you the details of Runan's population, lands, laws, and the like. Du Ji states that when he ruled, he would welcome all those who had advice or different views of the state to give their views. Then they would discuss matters and argue thoroughly to see what would be the better option. You take some of Du Ji's explanations to heart (+1 Pol).

Du Ji also explains to you that Runan has potential to grow in many ways. He was planning on building schools and focusing on Confucian education when he was in charge to better educate the people. Through education he planned he eliminate crime and promote values. With you now in charge of Runan, Du Ji says you could develop in any way you wish. Whether it is focused on farms and providing supplies, commerce and gold, schools, military, etc.

The two of you are slightly interrupted when a girl comes inside the office. She places cups of tea for the both of you.

“Ahhh, Shiji, thank you,” Du Yu says. You look at the girl who is small in stature but quite attractive. “This is my daughter, Shiji,” Du Ji tells you. “I have told her that she does not need to be in this dank place, but the girl refuses to listen to me.”

“I have nothing else to do father, the least I can do is help you around your work,” the girl says. She bows to you humbly.

“My daughter is a good girl and she is of age to marry, but I have yet to find her a suitable spouse,” Du Ji says with a sigh. “I think she would be better off in a household then following me around and reading all the times. But she refuses to even try looking for a man.”

“Father, please do not make me look lazy...”

What do you say on the matter?

>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)
>take the girl as your wife or concubine
>stay out of the matter
>>
>>538391
>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)

You anons will make a better choice than i will, yes. I don't have a particular preference.
>>
>>538391
>>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)
Zhang He or Song Qian but also say that we wouldn't do it if they did not get along.
>>
>>538391
I dunno, you guys know better on who to marry this girl off to. Wang yi is obviously taken
>>
>>538391
Lu Fan or Zhang He would be a pretty good choice for her, and schools both confucian and military may be a good idea. Build up bonds and make it so the people can better help themselves.
>>
>>538391
>>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)

Hao Xian is our right hand man and governor of Chen, so that's an option.

Lu Fan is also a good option
>>
Nah Hao Xian is getting Wang Yi.
>>
>>538408
>>538404
Well, my reasoning is Zhang He is a pretty balanced officer who could certainly take her opinion to heart while Lu Fan is a really good diplomat and thinker. Would be a good mental match for either if she's the sort who reads and the like.
>>
>>538391
>>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)
Lu Fan would be a good option.

However perhaps we can say that we would introduce some of our officers to her, see if any sparks fly.
>>
>>538391
>tell Du Ji you can try to arrange a marriage (choose officer)

Hao Xian is our right hand and it would be good if he at least is married if we aren't. Lu Fan is another option if we want to breed more political/administrative types.
>>

Zhang He is balanced, but more martial. Lu Fan's the scholar type and the girl seems to be the literary type.

It's interesting to read the descriptions of our people and their relative aptitude.

It looks like our "great generals" are Hao Xian and Zhang He.

Our best strategists at the moment are Lu Fan and Wang Yi

Something to keep in mind for later I suppose.

“Might I suggest a match with one of my vassals then?” you say. “Lu Fan is a good man and has been serving my force for several years. He is prudent, intelligent, and extols the virtues. I think that he and your daughter would be a fine match,” you tell Du Ji before you turn to his daughter. “That is of course if it is your wish. I will not force anything in my foce.”

Shiji bows to you.

“It is the duty of all daughters and women to marry. If that is what my father wants, then I shall also follow.”

Du Ji rubs his chin, thinking over the match for a few seconds before nodding.

“I have heard that Lu Fan is highly-ranked and quite talented. I would have no qualms about the match.”

“Very well then,” you say with a nod. “I shall discuss the matter with Lu Fan and if he agrees, perhaps the two of you can meet one another to see if you are compatible with one another.”

Your friendship with Du Ji grows since you have agreed to help him make ties with one of your officers. Later on when you inform Lu Fan of Du Ji's daughter, he scratches the back of his head.

“Ahh... Well uhh... A marriage,” he replies. “To be frank Lord Zheng, I do not much care for such matters. I only wish to fulfill my duties and continue my service in your force. However I am coming to that age where I should have some children... I guess it would not hurt to try,” Lu Fan replies. Though not ecstatic over the news, Lu Fan agrees to your proposal and will later see Du Ji's daughter.

It is the Fall of 192. At the end of this season you shall receive another set of income. At Chen you hear that Hao Xian has focused on recruiting more soldiers for your future campaign and training the men. In terms of administration, he has focused on education and culture. Apparently he is building a small garden where scholars can come to discuss matters of the state.

What do you do to improve your force for the Fall of 192?
>>
>>538537
As before, focus on training our men for war.

We may want to get our troops some naval training specifically so that we don't all drown on the way to Jing province.
>>
>>538537
Improve defense using this >>538385
>>538386

Because writeins and shit
>>
>>538537
Fire attack preparations.

Mock battles with the warships.
>>
>>538537

Would it be possible to meet with one of the heads of the local unaffiliated commanderies and try to make a vassal out of them?

If possible would be able to gain a small but intact force for the upcoming fight.

Since we got no money all we could do is train as it is
>>
>>538537

Train up our recruits and adepts
>>
>>538537
Oh and see if we can recruit any other talented individuals if it doesn't conflict with the larger goal of getting our military ready for a showdown with Liu Biao.

Another thought is potentially meeting with Cao Cao to make sure we won't fall prey to any surprise attacks. Tao Qian is our ally but we don't know how strong he'll be in a crisis.
>>
>>538548
Oh shit we have no money? Fuck. Yeah let's do your suggestion then. Seems like a solid plan.
>>
>>538537
Train the men. Add some time on the warship as well as the catapult.
>>
>>538537
Train the fuck out of everyone.

100 situps, pushups, and 10 kilometer marches every day in full kit.
>>
>>538559

Well, we have 25 gold.

And yeah, training the men is a solid idea, but if we could potentially gain a few thousand men it'd be worth a gamble putting off the training.
>>
>>538535
Probably. Doesn't really matter as, back then, intelligent people understood they have a duty to raise intelligent children no matter their preferences.

>>538537
Lots and lots of training. Fire attacks and naval preparation sounds good, although I don't know how good we can get at naval training with only one warship.
>>
>>538537
Training the men, perhaps getting some businesses started. Inns would likely do well during the winter months.
>>
>>538564
we actually have about 225 gold right now. Enough for a good project since we only used up 600.
>>
>>538537
So if we aren't going to try and vasalize another independent portion of the map near to us, then we should do massive training with our troops.
>>
>>538583

100 on businesses, 50 on the less fortunate, making sure that no one freezes or starves to death?

You commit the Fall of 192 to training your troops. You order your elites and veteran soldiers to toughen up the newer recruits. Drills and swordsmanship lessons as well as a small diet is enforced upon the soldiers to let them experience the dires of war. To fight at Jiangxia's waters you also dedicate a portion of the time in naval exercises.

1450 Adepts → Trained
400 Recruits → Adepts
The men in your command are average skilled naval fighters.

Winter comes and you are given several issues to deal with. You hear that several hundred Yellow Scarf remnant soldier have made the local mountains their home. Though they do not raid or pillage, they have made the mountains their territory and push away all who come. Apparently they only stick around an area for a couple months before moving on.

You hear of a talented man around the area. He is a merchant who came has traveled to and from barbarian territories where he made a profit selling Han wares for furs and horses. You have the chance to recruit him.

In Jing province you hear that there is a disgruntled officer who finds his lord to be weak and lacking in will. You also hear that he is quite arrogant despite being brave, making his fellow officers dislike him. Perhaps you can take advantage of the situation for your future attack.

What do you do?

>pacify the Yellow Scarf soldiers and bring them under your service
>recruit the talented merchant
>cajole the enemy officer

You decide to go and see the merchant and travel westward where he is currently residing in one of the villages. After asking around for the man, you find his location at a local tavern and trading spot. You travel to the location and at dusk you enter the tavern. On the corner of the tavern you find a man counting his wares and coins. You go to greet him but before you can give proper introductions, he interrupts you.

“Greetings my na-”

“No no no no, that will simply not do,” he mutters. “The profits I made this trip are far less than the last time I went. Maybe the barbarians are getting tired of Chinese pottery? What else should I offer them? You sir!” he says looking at you. “What do you suggest I sell the next time I head over to the Xiongnu lands? I have sold pottery thus far and they were impressed by it, but it seems the popularity of such wares is now outdated. I must move on to new ventures.”

You think over what the Xiongnu people are. They are northern tribesmen skilled in horsemanship. They are nomadic people and herders. What product do you suggest to the man to sell?

You realize the nomadic people are likely low on foodstuffs and luxuries of your land. Why not then sell wine? Especially considering that you have dedicated Chen on specializing in wine making and selling, sending these ventures out could be useful.

“You are in good fortune friend,” you tell the man. “In Chen which is only a few day's travel, at the new city of Xiaodan, there is a popular set of wines that are sold and has become prominent among the noblemen. If you could take these northward and sell them to the Xiongnu then you could make a great deal of profit. Wine is man's best friend they say, and have the northern barbarians ever tasted good wine?”

“Hmm... You might be correct,” says the man rubbing his chin. “But if these wine are premium as you say, then they should be quite expensive. I wonder if I should take the risk,” he says.

“Have no worries,” you say with a bow. “I can get you them at a cheaper price than normal, for I am Zheng Li, the ruler and administrator of these lands and Chen. I can grant you these wines in return for a favor for me.”

“Oh! I see I see, pray forgive my rudeness” the man says rising up and bowing to you. “I am Liang Xi, your humble local merchant. I aim one day to have my own stores and become a prominent man of the area. You say you will give me the wines in exchange for a favor? What is it you would want from me?”

You explain to Liang Xi that you are looking for talented individuals to come in to your service. You offer Liang Xi a position within your force. You offer him the wines to sell and a position of power as an administrator, to which he is delighted.

“Yes yes, I would be glad to serve you,” Liang Xi says bowing deeply. “Put me in charge of your finances and I assure you that I will increase commerce and prosperity in your lands. It seems I am most blessed by heaven today to be granted such favor!” he exclaims

Liang Xi joins your force.

People have a tendency to start a shitstorm and bitch and moan about how we could've gotten a god-tier general or whatever instead.

nb4GanNing as the salty as fuck Jingzhou officer (but knowing history and stuff he'll probably switch over to the Sun family a bit earlier)
>>
>>538841
Even if it was Gan Ning or Wei Yan, I'd still be happy with getting a great merchant to improve our finances.

The extra coins in our pocket every season should be really valuable.
>>
>>538841
Someone in charge of finance and trade was sorely needed if we want the coin to grow really big. After this we can start grabbing more generals since we've got a decent sized administrative officer corp.
>>
>>538834
We are going to have SO much land devouted to silkworms and wine.
>>
>>538846
Speaking of which, we JUST talked to Du Ji and found out he was planning to make a few schools.

Now, I realise we have to focus quite a bit on our military, but seriously, we should do that. Build a few schools, or at least military academies.

Or else our options for officers are limited to "QM rolls a dice, and good ones are super rare." because anyone decent is going to go places with facilities.
>>
>>538848
That was the plan. Training up milita and merchants would be a good way to grow our lands.Add a bit of philosophy and we'd have a pretty decent standard of living.
>>
>>538848
>In terms of administration, he has focused on education and culture. Apparently he is building a small garden where scholars can come to discuss matters of the state.

Looks like Hao Xian is way ahead of us there, but I agree and support building schools/academies.
>>
>>538848
It is and one that has already started with Hao Xian building a garden for scholars to gather, allowing us to tap current talent.

Frankly, gathering places like this and tea houses where scholars can gather to debate and discuss strategies would be more important at this point since that allows us to tap current talent.

Schools and academies are unfortunately, for grooming future talent and we need the officials now to be put to use in the field.
>>
>>538853
>>538848

Oh man, I'm hoping we can get Zhuge Jin through the academic network. He's got more sense than his little brother and knows when to fold 'em when the shit gets way too tough. Also has a shit ton more common sense out of the three Zhuge brothers.
>>
>>538860
Yes. I know Hao Xian is doing that.
But we should ALSO do it. Or even do it, but focus on other sorts of academies.
Plus, garden =/= academy, one's for teaching, ones for debate. It's the difference between POL, CHA, and INT, man.
>>
>>538866
Yes we should but I'm saying both facilities have a different focus.

Gathering places attract folks who are already versed in their subjects, like military tactics or administrative policies.

Schools are for promising youths who have not yet been fully taught.

Our immediate focus should be on attracting those already in the current talent pool, before grooming youngsters since building for the future doesnt really matter if we don't have the people to secure our present.
>>
>>538875

A military academy could potentially attract current warriors and generals y'know

Be it them looking to further their own abilities or looking to challenge our academy

And how old is Pang Tong right now?
Plus, schools are an INVESTMENT. And best done EARLY. The longer you wait to build them, the longer they take to pay off.
>>
>>538875
Well, a military academy could help us train up the average man. Make it so our militia is skilled and possibly larger when we draft them.
>>
Yep Military Academy for Runan.
>>
>>538877
Not for a newly established academy at the least. It will help train up promising officers and sergeants to lead our troops with the occasional named officer but right now our costing should be focused on the upcoming war.

>>538881
Look, I'm not saying don't build them and yes they take years to show dividends but the gathering places would already attract people.

What I'm getting at is the build order. We build the gathering places first before full fledged academies.
>>
>>538887
>>538885
I'm all for a military academy, but keep in mind we should make a regular one too, or else we're gonna lose face with the populace, because they'll think we care ONLY about war, and not about improving the lands we already have.
>>
>>538892
Or we can just build both at once. They aren't going to be like 500 gold each, and we have a population of over 1 million, man. We can do both.
>>
>>538896
And we have an upcoming war to finance.
>>
>>538899
We won't need literally every single ounce of gold we have going into the war.
We can spend a bit to make a few investments, man.
>>
>>538892
>What I'm getting at is the build order. We build the gathering places first before full fledged academies.

Well, a gathering place could naturally progress into an academy down the line come think of it.

>>538893

It's not like we're only going to have one place to build stuff at y'know, but yea nothing saying we absolutely have to specialize in one area for each prov.
>>
>>538896
> population of 1 million

Source? Pretty sure that a city the size of Runan can only sustain 50,000 at best.
>>
>>538906
Look at that map earlier. Se the number on each province? That's our population, bro

Or are you just assuming there's a single city in each commandery?

Additionally, the population isn't the core of my argument, even if we have less, that's NOT STOPPING US from being able to build both.
>>
>>538903

We don't but spare gold would help in the battle. Some enemies can be bribed and a strategic reserve is always useful.

Also I think you underestimate the cost of a school. Since if we're going to try and tap all the talent we can get, we're going to need to finance the costs of students at the academy. Otherwise, we're only going to get nobles and smart peasants would just be relegated to the fields. So it'll be a constant cost but a good one.

>>538905

That would be ideal, yes. Since it ensures that there already is a good number of well learned gentlefolk to teach the students.
On further reading, the academy/school probably would be much more important since the standardised Imperial Exams that were conducted in Ancient China were not very widespread at this point and were up to now, only done on persons recommended for official posts. It'll definitely be very important down the road.
>>
>>538913
Hmm... I'm not even sure if that map has the historically accurate population numbers for each province/commandery. Minor quibble, death and disease has a tendency to cause numbers to fluctuate.

I'm all for building both scholar and military academies. That'll attract the talent and maybe train up a couple of promising officers from the local populace.

No guarantee that it'll improve the peasant militia though, they're more concerned with the next seasonal harvest rather than waging war as a profession.
>>
>>538919
The thing you have to consider is that some of our biggest improvements require money as well. We needed it to start up our wineries, and its already showing us a great return. Using money to improve our merchnts via trade schools, or our soldiers by military academies means we will be able to make more for less and build up a skilled force with less effort.

Money is good, but this is going to be a long conflict and we can't keep losing soldiers after spending many actions drafting and training. We need to build up our supplies, facilities, and defenses if we want to last once Cao Cao looks south.
>>
>>538931
Historically, Cao Cao will start start looking westwards, especially if he gets first on the pounce to liberating the Emperor from Guo Si's grasp. Then he'll sweep northwards and beat the shit out of Yuan Shao and secure the Central Plains before he even thinks about coming south.
>>
>>538931
This. If we're just going from conflict to conflict preparing for only the next one, we're gonna run ourselves ragged and get fucked. We need to prepare for the future, despite the challenges of today.
>>
>>538931

I don't disagree. What I disagree with is when to build since our forces are currently only on parity with the professional core of Liu Biao's forces while he will definitely raised a few thousand more conscripts. I'm seeing that we'll need to concentrate on our upcoming military endevour rather than spend on this academy at this point since unlike the wineries, this will always be a loss making venture except in talent produced.

Yes it is important but I think that it should come after our next campaign rather then spending it on the eve of our next fight against a large faction.
>>
>>538940

I think it would be fair to suggest investing in schools/business after we have concluded our campaign against Liu Biao, but I would also like to say that it should not be at the expense of further expansion when it comes to commanderies that are still independent. Further, if we can take those with the least amount of lost manpower as possible it would be for the best.
>>
>>538940
Not exactly. Next campaign will likely have us move to Jiang to repair it, get it operational and begin the southern domination. We are going to be rather busy, drafts are going to be useless until after the war, and we'll likely be spending a good ammount of money on getting troops to reinforce our men. Plus side, we might get reinforcements from Chen so we could have a extra thousand.

With this you are certain that Du Ji will not rebel or cause any trouble, as Lu Fan is one of your most trusted men and holds a high rank within your force.

The attack on Jiangxia will come soon after the next season. What do you do in preparation for the Winter?

Oh shit guys, we still have ties with yuan shao right?

We technically still support him, so it wouldn't be wise to blatantly help his enemies. We should fly different banners under our soldiers so we act as unaffiliated mercenaries. If sun fag allows us to bear his banner and have one of his representatives be the token head of our force then it masks everything perfectly

The only problem is that we openly supported sun fag when we faced liu biao. But that can be easily written off as a favor rather than wholehearted support.

We can basically have two alliances and thus opportunities in the bag for fame and expansion. It's perfect as long as yuan shao and sun fag don't have a border, then it starts becoming complicated.

The year is now 193. You hear that Cao Cao has successfully pacified most of Yanzhou and brought the land under his control. He commands a respectable army numbering several ten thousand troops, especially the veteran Qingzhou corps. Many scholars, warriors, and generals have come under his command. You hear he is going to attack the commandery of Yingchuan and the city of Xuchang soon.

Eastward you hear Yuan Shu is making an attack on the commandery of Lujiang. Having solidified his base in Jiujiang and the city of Shouchun after having been driven off the Central Plains by Cao Cao, Yuan Shu waged war against Tao Qian. The battle went even and on a stalemate for some time and Tao Qian relinquished control of Guangling commandery for a peace treaty. Now Yuan Shu looks to expand to the western and southern commanderies.

The two forces are very much bordering your territory now. You might want to negotiate with them. Do you send any diplomats to Cao Cao and/or Yuan Shu?

You head towards Chenliu, the territory you once went to meet the various other lords in the alliance against Dong Zhuo. Back then you were a minor lord with barely any territory but now you have grown Chen to have a city and conquered Runan. Cao Cao too was once a minor warlord, his renown only known because he was the one who called for the alliance. Now Cao Cao has conquered Yan province and commands several tens of thousand troops.

When you arrive at Chengliu city you see several thousand troops drilling outside of the city. They are strict in discipline and from the looks of them they can compare to the veteran soldiers under your command. At the helm of the troops being drilled you can see a very large man. He grabs several spears in his large hands in one go and throws them over the air. The spears surge forward in a great distance and lands on a group of training dummies which are pierced thoroughly. The feat is almost superhuman and you make note to be weary of this large warrior.

“Greetings Lord Zheng Li,” you hear a voice say. Appearing before you at the gates of Chenliu city is a handsome scholar with a neatly trimmed beard. He motions with his hand towards the troops. “Are you not impressed? These men are the elite of our troops and they have fought through many battles. All those who would go against Cao Cao would have to face them in combat.”

How do you reply?

"They are most impressive and fearsome," you say with a bow. "I have heard much of the elite Qingzhou troops and their prowess. Seeing them before me tells me there is great reason for their reputation."

The scholarly man makes a small laugh and motions for you to enter the gates. He leads you through the city streets, motioning with his hand on the stalls and prosperous looking houses.

"My Lord has done much in these last few years to bring Yan under his control. We have built strong foundations, gained the trust of the people, and put the Yellow rebels that surrendered to our farms. Many talented men have also been brought to service."

The two of you arrive at the main headquarters. As you head up the stairs you see a fierce looking warrior heading down. He bows to the scholar you are walking with and the scholar bows back.

"Did you have another game of Go with Lord Cao Cao, Master Xiahou Dun?" the scholar asks. "Who won this time?"

"Hmph. Must you ask Master Xun Yu? Cao Cao of course," Xiahou Dun replies. His eyes turn to you. "Is this the man called Zheng Li?" he asks. Xun Yu nods and Xiahou Dun scoffs.

"Make sure you stay clear out of Cao Cao's ways pup," he says before he departs, not giving you a chance to even reply. Xun Yu laughs.

"Do not mind Master Xiahou Dun," Xun Yu says. "He is always to the point and straight as an arrow." Xun Yu leads you up the steps and to the audience hall.

Before you and behind a table is Cao Cao, the man you met several years ago at the conference. You remember that Cao Cao treated you well and even commended you during the alliance while the other lords looked down upon you. You ponder if his demeanor then remains the same.

Xun Yu announces your arrival and Cao Cao looks up from his manuals.

"Ahhh, Zheng Li is it?" Cao Cao says. You bow to greet Cao Cao and he nods. "And to what pleasure do I receive your visit?" he asks.

“Indeed,” Cao Cao replies. “Back at the alliance I nearly lost everything. I fought to restore peace and bring back the Han, but I met an unfortunate defeat when I was outnumbered by Xu Rong and Lu Bu. What a misfortune it was that the other lords cowered at the back and refused to fight. Truly a shame is it not?” he says.

The answer is hard to find and you cannot answer on the spot. But you review the facts of Cao Cao's army. He started his base in Chenliu after having been defeated by Dong Zhuo's force. Since then he gathered what men and arms he could before campaigning against Yan province against the Yellow Scarf rebels. He defeated the rebels after some intense fighting and recently pacified Yan. A good answer to why Cao Cao should make peace and goodwill with you should lie there.

In any case, what is your response to Cao Cao? Why should he not fight you?

Cao Cao currently can't deal with building up his base of support and handling us at the same time while Yuan Shao grows larger and more fearsome every day.

He would be much more suited to building his strength and currying favor and reputation as the only lord still putting down rebels and fighting on behalf of the Emperor. We're obviously not that, Sun Jian isn't loyal because of the imperial Seal, Yuan Shu and Yuan Shao are attacking other independent force.

Cao Cao remains the sole man for those loyal to the Emperor to flock to in hopes of maintaining the Han dynasty. Even if he doesn't plan to be the one to maintain the Han dynasty, throwing that reputation away for two mere commanderies would be folly at this time.

FUCK
>>
>>543433
His soldiers, though veteran and skilled, are few and tired. He also requires time to rebuild Yan after the intense fighting there.
>>
>>543433
Arguably, Cao Cao faces enemies to the north and to the west from Yuan Shao and Dong Zhuo's remaining generals.

If Cao Cao was to try to take over our territories, he would face enemies from all sides. Yuan Shu to the East and Liu Biao (Yuan Shao's ally) to the south.

Since he has recently pacified Yan, it would be in his best interest to have a buffer territory that would serve as his shield against his southern enemies (Liu Biao and Yuan Shu) while he works to consolidate his hold over the Northern Plains.
>>
>>543451

Supporting this
>>
>>543433
Yuan Shao lies to the North, Tao Qian to the East, the traitors Li Jue and Guo Si, although lurking far in Chang'an, are in the West. You've only just pacified Yan Province and I sit in the South. If you aren't ally with me or remain friends with me, you'd be in a precious position.

If you move to attack any lords in any of your directions, you leave your flank open to any if not all of them.

Both because it shows we are aware of the political not just the basic military situation of being surrounded by larger threats, and because it implies we know he would throw it away for a big enough prize.

You come up with a reply after a few quick seconds of thinking and make a reply to Cao Cao.

“Lord Cao Cao, though you are strong and your armies powerful, there are still other lords that a threat to you. Yuan Shao lies to the north of you and Tao Qian to the east. Your enemy Yuan Shu that you drove out is ever looking for revenge. Furthermore, the only true supporter of the Han is yourself as demonstrated when you fought to drive Dong Zhuo. Rather than tarnish your reputation by invading us, you would do better to consolidate your power at Yan, gather loyalists, and let us deal with people like Yuan Shu.”

“Yuan Shao? Tao Qian? Yuan Shu?” Cao Cao replies, then starts laughing. “Yuan Shao is busy dealing with Gongsun Zan at his borders and is now pacifying the rebels of Bing and Ji. Tao Qian is but a weak man with no ambition. Yuan Shu is an insect, an unworthy man who does not deserve his name. What fear should I have of these lords?” Cao Cao laughs once more.

“But you do speak well. I am indeed loyal to the Han and the Emperor and all know of my piety and virtue. Just remember that Li Jue and Guo Si still hold the Emperor, and until they are dealt with, no true force can say they are upholding the name of the Han.”

Cao Cao leans back on his chair and takes a drink from his wine.

“But in any case I accept your call for neutrality. Do not attack me, and I will not attack you. Enjoy your fight with Liu Biao, Lord Zheng Li,” Cao Cao says.

And with that the matter is concluded. Though your argument did not truly touch on the real reason as to why Cao Cao should have made peace with you, he still did so anyway.

You return to Runan. It is the Spring of 193 and in the next season you shall march your armies to attack Jiangxia. Sun Jian shall lead the brunt and vanguard of the attack from the south and you predict you will only have to deal with Jiangxia's forces.

What do you do to improve Runan this month?

>>
>>543502
Depends on what you want to spend. You can just take it as a generic action in which case it will take some time to build up. Using gold will enhance the result.
>>
>>543505

Can you give us ballpark figure, say we speak with our civil advisors as to how much would be a good amount to spend for good returns.

military acadamies and schools. We are likely going to be going to Jiang soon, so we'll need to get that set up now.
>>
>>543515
Considering what Arpeggio said, what do you say about investing a 100 gold into the school first with future funds injected at a later time. Especially since it'll be a long term project.
>>
Actually, given how easily we besieged this city, let's bulk up the granaries.
>>

500 gold would make respectable academies known around the province and regional lands after some time. 1000 gold would make them legendary and known throughout the land in some years.
>>
>>543536
Christ, it is 500 gold.
>>
>>543536
Maybe we can chip in fifty gold for now, and then start pooling money to make it legendary down the line?

Can we invest via multiple payments?
>>
>>543542
Yes.
>>
>>543547
>>543542
This then.
>>
>>543542
>>543547

Lets do that for now, then.

We really cant afford to drop all that cash on the school now.
>>
>>543542
I'd say 100 for now with larger chunks depending on how we do in the war. Would giving some of our elite as instructors help there?
>>
>>543542
Oh damn, yes.

100 for now, we'll see how much we have lying about in a season or two after taxes have been received.
>>
In the hopes of making Runan your central military base and hoping to gather the most powerful army there in the future, you begin projects to build military academies at Runan. You fund 100 gold for now in aid of the projects. With Lu Fan in charge, you begin to construct buildings across Runan commandery and begin searching for talented scholars that could teach.

It will take some time to build the academies first, then some more time to actually spread repute of your academies throughout the land. Though it might take some years, you hope that what you are starting will be the start of a grand result by the end of your work.

In the eve of Summer you march out your armies to attack Jiangxia. You hear word that Sun Jian has marched around 15,000 troops to attack Liu Biao at Nan commandery and Liu Biao is responding with 20,000 troops of his own led by Huang Zu to defend his territory. He would commit troops from Jiangxia, but due to your attack, the troops at Jiangxia are forced to defend against you instead.

The enemy force coming out to meet you with is led by Cai Mao and Zhang Yun. They are leading 5000 professional trained troops while they have drafted 3000 militia from the countryside to defend Jiangxia. You lead around 4500 professional troops yourself and are joined by Hao Xian who managed to gather 2000 trained soldiers that he has worked on since you left him in charge of Chen.

Hao Xian and Yang Jing come to greet you and the three of you embrace one another. It has been some time since you lot have seen each other but now your most loyal men that have been with you at the start are now together.

“Brothers, we have come far since the day we only held a couple hundred troops. Now we command several thousand and after taking Jiangxia our power shall only grow. I hope you are all prepared for a good fight,” you tell your two men.

Your army prepares the warships and boats. You see your officers hard at work putting the men in proper formation and checking their weapons. In the distance you see Wang Yi gazing across the sea absentmindedly. You ponder if the calm looking woman now will turn in to that demon you saw back at the attack on Runan.

Speaking of Wang Yi, she has not found herself a husband yet and you remember that she is looking for the best interest of her clan. Perhaps you should play matchmaking again? You had some mind to pair her up with Hao Xian but you wonder if that's the best choice.

>One of Jia Xu’s most outstanding characteristics was his caution. He was very careful, almost paranoid. He always sought to avoid personal entanglements, and Zhang Xiu appears to be the only real friend he ever had. He was always suspicious of those around him and always feared that others conspired to do him harm. He kept himself personally aloof from Li Jue, and he never trusted Duan Wei. Even after serving under Cao Cao for 20 years, he feared that his colleagues meant him harm and he was always extremely cautious around them. He trusted no one - perhaps because no one trusted him. Because of his serious demeanor, he was posthumously named the Solemn Marquis.

>As a result of this caution, Jia Xu tried to keep his children out of court life. He did not arrange political marriages for his sons, nor did he ensure them high court positions. His son Jia Mu inherited his titles. He became the Grand Administrator of several commanderies, though he rose no higher than that. After his death, his son Jia Mo inherited Jia Xu’s estate. Jia Mo achieved some prominence, serving as an adviser and general under Jia Nanfeng’s regime (though the two were not related). He and his children held some power in Western Jin. so Jia Xu’s family continued to prosper after his death.

>Unfortunately, there isn’t anything at all recorded about his wife - not even her family name. It is probably safe to assume, though, that she wasn’t related to anyone famous since Jia Xu carefully avoided political marriages, and he was probably married well before he became famous and important.

When you first met Hao Xian he joined you because he was interested in expanding his own clan's influence and prestige, much like yourself. And you remember that when you talked with him he was not exactly interested in concepts of love and romantic thoughts. You think that he might thus be a good match for Wang Yi as they are both interested in gaining influence for their family. For now you decide to pair up the two together as units for the battle.

When the two of them get on a warship to work together, Wang Yi glares you Hao Xian.

"You... Do you realize people have been calling me the Grinning Demon?" Wang Yi says pointing at Hao Xian.

Hao Xian shrugs.

"Is that not good? It means people will fear you and your reputation will spread."

"What kind of lady would want a name like that!?" Wang Yi spurts out. "What woman would want to be fear and called a demon!?"

"Daji of Shang was said to be a great beauty and was famous, though people feared her."

"You know very well Daji is not someone to look up to!"

...Well the two aren't exactly hitting it up, but you think that such a casual relationship can one day become something good. You leave it at that for now.

You rub your chin as you observe the bold enemy warrior. Any man of the sword can recognize the enemy is powerful and you are forced to send out your best champions. You call for Zhang He to your side.

“Zhang He, that man proclaims such arrogant words. Will you meet him in combat and take his head?”

“Of course! Leave it to me my Lord!” Zhang He says as he goes out with his own ship. The two ships anchor against one another and as Zhang He steps forward twirling his spear he calls out to the enemy.

“I am Zhang He of Mao, state your name warrior!” he calls out.

“Hah! A young pup comes out to meet me!? Go back to your ranks and come back to fight me when you have gained more experience. Or else, Huang Zhong will end your life early!”

“I am a veteran of the Yellow Scarf rebellion, who are you to mock me when you bear a name I have not even heard of?” Zhang He says as he jumps forward to meet Huang Zhong in battle.

Zhang He thrusts his spear forward, but Huang Zhong dodges to the side and with a swing of his dao bears down upon Zhang He's neck. Zheng He is surprised by the quick riposte but manages back his neck just in time. The two trade blows and the duel rages upon the waters of the Chang Jian river. The movements of the two warriors are quick and with every clash of their weapons sound reverberates throughout the entire force. The two fight about fifty bouts before they charge upon one another with their strongest attack. Zhang He's spear clashes with Huang Zhong's dao and the force of the mighty warriors is so powerful that the two boats they were on begins to rock and spread away from one another.

As the ships part the duel ends with no victor. Zhang He tsks at his failure to kill the enemy.

“Well fought pup!” Huang Zhong calls out. “I expected to kill you at the tenth round, but I see the enemy has brave warriors.” The elder man laughs as his ship begins to head back to the enemy.

“My most sincerest apologies,” Zhang He says bowing to you. You cannot blame Zhang He; in the likely case you would not have fared any better against such a powerful warrior. You order the drums of battle to start and your navy goes forward while Cai Mao marches his.

Both forces clash. The enemy are skilled marines, but you have trained your men much for the upcoming battle in naval tactics yourself. Arrow fires are exchanged and ram ships smash upon one another. This time even without Sun Jian's aid you are able to match Liu Biao's navy. The battles rages on for hours, but with years of experience behind your veteran soldiers, your men fare much better against Cai Mao as time goes on. Your commanders are more experienced and soon enough your ships have broken the enemy ranks. The enemy force retreats away and your men manage to inflict casualties on the pursuit.

Cai Mao: -3000 soldiers
Zheng Li: -500 trained, -200 veteran, -100 elite

You give your men a few days of rest after the hard fought battle. In the morn of one day however you see a fast moving ship with several hundred soldiers heading towards you. They are alone and have covered their ship with white flags all around. It seems a group of men defecting?

“Lord Zheng Li!” a man calls out. “Liu Biao is a fool! I wish to join your army and defect to your cause!” he calls out as the ship moves forward to you.

>Fast moving ship
>no apparent reason to defect

Something feels a little fishy here

Huang Gai willingly allowed himself to be beaten in public by Zhou Yu for suggesting to surrender to Cao Cao. This trick fooled Cao Cao’s spies, who reported the incident to their Headquarters. Shortly after, Huang Gai sent a fake letter of defection to Cao Cao, and prepared special transport for the exchange. Huang Gai filled his boats with dry grass and poured fatty oil over them, then covered them with red sheets and ornaments. A time was arranged for the transfer, and Huang Gai led his ships through the canal to the basin where Cao Cao’s fleet was anchored. Before Cao Cao could pick up the boats, Huang Gai set them on fire and rammed them into Cao Cao’s barges.

(Forgot, Hao Xian -200 troops)

You do not fall prey to the enemy's ploy. The ship is moving too quickly and if they had wanted to surrender they would have stopped humbly in front of your navy instead of moving at you with great speed. You order a ship to intercept the enemy.

Yang Jing goes out to meet the enemy in charge with his battle axe on hand. When he does, the man is surprised.

"Why do you come at us with weapons!?" the man calls out.

"Silence whelp! You dare attempt to trick us!?"

With their ploy discovered, the man charges out to kill Yang Jing. The two fight a brief moment before Yang Jing splits the man's head with his axe. The soldiers under his command put the enemy to slaughter. When they return it is found out that the ship was filled with hay and burnables and was attempting to launch a fire attack and the man leading was a warrior named Liu Pan. You have quickly prevented the enemy tactic.

Cai Mao: -100 troops. -Liu Pan

With the enemy tactic in failure, the enemy is put on the defense. They refuse to engage you directly and make defensive formations among the coast near the walls of Jiangxia. They put themselves in high alert.

How do you go forward with the battle? Jiangxia is a city where the northern front is covered by the river while the other sides are covered by land. If you could land your troops and surround the city by both naval and land siege you could do better against Jiangxia. But as it stands the enemy has made a strong defense preventing you from landing and with archers prepared on the walls to support their navy.

>commit to an attack
>try to launch a raid

Cannabalise it for wood. Use sections of the decking as large troop shields for our troops to take advantage off as they land.

The enemy still has several thousand soldiers to match your army, yet they refuse to fight. Taking advantage of the facts, you order you men to hurl abuses and throw insults at the enemy for their cowardice and refusal to battle even when the numbers are even. For a week your men shout names at the enemy, moon them, and Yang Jing displays the split head of Liu Pan in front of the enemy. Zhang He admonishes Huang Zhong and says he ran away from the duel.

The enemy can bear the insults no longer. They march out once again to fight your navy. With a wedge formation they plan to brake through your navy and crush your troops. You order your commanders to feign defeat and retreat.

Hao Xian and Wang Yi engage the enemy for an hour. They pretend defeat and the two of them turn their ships to run. The enemy takes the bait and as they move forward, you maneuver your other ships to sail around the enemy from the flanks and surround the enemy. You press your soldiers forward and another fierce battle takes place.

Like before the enemy is eventually routed after several hours of battle. They attempt to retreat but you have blocked their escape route. It is only by the efforts of Huang Zhong that the enemy manages to break through one part of your blockade. With their navy broken, the enemy forces retreat and head back to port which is located away from Jiangxia city. You give chase and pursuit.

You take the enemy port as Cai Mao destroys his ships and flees to Jiangxia. Your troops give chase but are unable to catch up to the enemy. You stand before the enemy walls and begin preparing catapults to bombard the enemy. However, before you can even set up your defenses, something strange is happening at the enemy walls.

The gate is barred shut and kept tight. The enemy troops led by Cai Mao are left stranded before the walls. At the top of the walls you can see white flags of surrender being raised in the air.

“What the hell are you doing!?” you can hear Cai Mao yell. “Let us in!”

He is met by several arrows that are shot by the guards on the walls. There are about a hundred or so men on the walls and they are firing arrows down upon Cai Mao's troops.

What do you do?

We took out the majority of their forces and probably demoralized the remained. Smash them and be done with it.

Maybe we can win him over to our side. We wouldn't pull this on our people.
>>
>>543877
If we are preparing for a siege, it implies Cai Mao will eventually overcome the traitors to defend the city.

They have maximum 2000 troops left, we outnumber them 2 to 1. Even if there were 2000 troops on the wall, we could overcome them. What sort of trap can overcome those odds? It's best to just end this cleanly and quickly imo
>>
Charge in. Literally what trap can they actually pull off that can hurt us?

They lost 6000 men in a straight fight against us. We can always boil them later but being catious now costs us nothing.

Changin vote.

I actually misse the white flags.

To be fair though, if they were surrendering, why shoot at those guys when you could just bar the gates.
>>
>>543877
Cai Mao isn't that good and right now it looks like the enemy is frightened. Put on some more pressure and we can take the city in no time. If they try to push back or retreat, we can simply set up the catapults. Either way, assume that their white flag means something and do not give them a chance to change their mind.

Break their morale, make them humble.
>>
>>543889
I initially missed the surrender flags. I've changed my vote.

For some reason you feel cautious and fear there might be a trap. Lu Fan however urges you on informing there is no way the enemy can be so desperate as to shoot their own men. Such a thing would drastically lower the loyalty of soldiers. You order a charge to mop up the rest of the enemy.

You devastate the remainders of Cai Mao's troops. Betrayed by their comrades and tired from the constant battles, they barely put up a fight. Huang Zhong however leads a hundred men and they fight to the very last breath. All hundred men under Huang Zhong are slaughtered while your soldiers throws net at him and his horse to bring him down and capture him.

Cai Mao in desperation surrenders with his remaining men.

Hao Xian: -100 trained troops
Zheng Li: -100 trained troops

The gates of Jiangxia open up. You are welcomed in by the traitors of Liu Biao. The enemy commander before you is a tall intrepid man with whisky side beards and bronze tanned skin. He greets you heartily and bows before you.

“Welcome Lord Zheng Li. I am Wei Yan, gatekeep and captain of the guards. I hereby relinquish Jiangxia to you,” he says as he hands you the seal of Jiangxia. You accept his seal and move on to the audience hall where Cai Mao and Huang Zhong are brought forward in bonds.

“I-I surrender to your force,” Cai Mao says bowing his head to the ground. “My sister Shi and her son, Liu Cong, have taken residence here. If you would ensure their safety and mine, we would be glad to join your force or live in peace.”

If you remember correctly, Liu Cong is the eldest son of Liu Biao, but still very young. The Cai family is linked to Liu Biao and keeping them alive might cause trouble. Yet, you predict Liu Biao has come to an end and Cai Mao may very well be surrendering and changing his fortunes. Cai Mao is a decent warrior and his naval abilities are up to par. What do you do?

Keep him in a teaching position and keep an eye on him constantly. He'll have a useful job and his family will be safe. Do not put him in a position of power or control of a territory and make it super clear if he tries anything, we're going to put his head on a pike.

If he behaves, maybe promote him to Naval Commander. Ask his advice for Naval Battles too, he seemed good at that.

Execute Wei Yan and no one will ever surrender to you of their own accord again.

Wei Yan helped deliver the city to us and our reaction is to execute him? What message will this send?

That is setting aside how useful Wei Yan would be.
>>
>>543938
As an aside, Wei Yan isn't that bad a commander. Close to Shu's 5 generals in combat skill and was a good leader. Problem is, Zhuge Liang was a absolute dick to him and that screwed over Shu.

Hire Cai Mao and his family. Can we stop being over cautious pussies? Liu Biao is fucked, if we treat the family decently and use Liu Cong as a puppet we ensure the loyalty of JingXia.

Because traitors come in multiple shades and stripes. Those who leave peacefully, those who take something with them, some who revolt openly. Thing is, if you kill those who willingly defect, then even if it's one type of defector, the others would be less likely to surrender and just make things more difficult. Really, unless it's a serial defector like Lu Bu, this is a pretty normal practice.

Dude, nobody is going to agree with you on executing Wei Yan.
>>
>>543987
Magistrates don't decide fate of generals. It's your decision, as the lord.

As far as I am concerned, Wei Yan did us all a favor and our response shouldn't be to execute him. That's injustice and counterproductive in all our future battles.

Historically, Cao Cao let Zhang Xiu surrender and gave him high positions despite him killing his first born. This is common for the period.
>>
>>543994
Cao Cao punished a slave for betraying his master, a master who openly objected to how Cao Cao was using his authority. When the slave tattled on what his master was saying to Cao Cao, the prime minister brought the two of him before him, killed the slave, and gave the master a new slave to secure his loyalty.
>>

>>
>>544006
Granted, we are not the Jebediah Springfields of China, but every Wei officer practiced Justice except for Pang Hui, which was a more perverted form of it.
>>
You consider the matter at hand and debilitate on the matter. While certainly Cai Mao and the son Liu Cong might be trouble in the future, you can keep a close watch on them as you did with Du Ji. And with Liu Cong on your hands, can you not use the boy to justify your claims on Jing province?

“Very well Cai Mao” you tell him. “Your family will be kept safe and shall be treated well under the supervision of my soldiers. I expect you to commit meritorious deeds in the future in return for my mercy.”

“Yes! Thank you Lord Zheng, thank you for your mercy!” Cai Mao says as he bows his head to the ground thrice.

You bring Huang Zhong up next and ask for his surrender. He spits on the ground however and refuses.

“I am no turncoat. What a shame it is that Cai Mao would give up his loyalty so easily, to his own brother-in-law no less. I hope he shall one day bring ruin to your force. The same goes for Wei Yan, that traitorous swine.”

You attempt to convince Huang Zhong, but he will have none of it. With much reluctance, you are about to order Huang Zhong to prison when another prisoner is brought in tow. You are surprised to find Wei Yan in bonds.

“M-My Lord! What have I done wrong!?” Wei Yan cries out.

Lu Fan follows behind.

“Wei Yan, you are an opportunist. You have betrayed the trust of your liege lord. You did not even give an ounce of fight for Liu Biao. You betrayed your own men and killed the soldiers that should have been your brother-in-arms.” Lu Fan comes to you and bows. “We cannot trust a man like Wei Yan in to our ranks. I implore you to execute him.”

“My Lord!” Wei Yan says bowing his head. “I turned against Liu Biao because he has long since treated me unfairly! I proved myself worthy of commanding soldiers and battle countless times towards Liu Biao, but Huang Zu that snake always brought my reputation down. Liu Biao always listened to Huang Zu and disliked me for no reason! When I heard your lordship was coming, the man who fought bravely against the Yellow rebels leading only a few hundred troops, and the man who aided the people of Chen, I decided I found my true lord.”

A laugh bursts out from Huang Zhong.

“Wei Yan you are a dirty dog. You were despised here because you were always arrogant and boastful of your abilities.” Huang Zhong turns to you. “I will then offer you this Lord Zheng. Kill Wei Yan and I will join you. I refuse to fight against my liege Lord Liu Biao, but I know he is near his ends. If you will ensure the life of Lord Liu Biao and kill Wei Yan, I shall give you my service.”

You are at a loss and you ask the opinion of your officers. Hao Xian is the first to speak.

“My Lord, though Wei Yan betrayed his lord, he is the reason why we did not have to suffer a siege and lose another thousand of our soldiers. If you are to kill Wei Yan in the logic that he is a traitor, no one shall join you in the future out of fear. I have heard Wei Yan to be brave and capable. Even if you were to not trust him, he trusted you.”

“Mmm... I must say we should recruit Lord Huang Zhong,” Zhang He says. “I can vouch for his ability. And as Lord Lu Fan said, how could we trust a man who would betray his liege lord? The rest of the officers here would fight to the death even if you were at rope's end Lord Zheng.”

“If our lord were to ever fall, that would be his fault,” Wang Yi interjects bluntly and looks at you. “Would you expect every one of your soldiers and officers to fight to the death if you were losing? Such a thought would be selfish; to ask all of your men to die for a lost cause. If you think Wei Yan will betray you, then simply never come to a situation where you will lose and ensure everyone you will be victorious. Make use of his abilities to aid your conquest.”

“A brave warrior should meet his end no matter what,” Yang Jing says. “But I can't exactly feel right killing a man who surrendered to us. To be honest, if I was treated like shit, I wouldn't be loyal either. I would die under your command Zheng Li because we have been friends for a long time, but if you weren't and treated me poorly, why would I give you my loyalty? Besides I don't think Sun Jian will appreciate us telling him to spare Liu Biao for this man's sake.”

“My officers are correct,” you say. “I cannot bear to execute a man who came to me, even if it is against the advice of my good aide Lu Ziheng. Unbound the ropes,” you instruct the guards. “We should not be treating a man who helped us like this.”

Lu Fan sighs as the guards go to unbind Wei Yan. He walks in front of Wei Yan.

“Though the mercy of my Lord, you are spared,” he tells Wei Yan. “But I will not have your arrogance and boasting within this force. You will treat the other officers with respect and if you ever think of betrayal, I swear to the heavens that you shall be punished. Do I have your word that you will serve Lord Zheng Li faithfully?”

“O-Of course,” Wei Yan says bowing. “As I said, I admired Lord Zheng and would never think of betraying him.”

“Then begone with you,” Lu Fan says. Wei Yan quickly gets up and bows to you before departing.

Huang Zhong shakes his head as he sees Wei Yan be freed.

“What a shame we live in a world where dishonorable rogues are punished. The great ancestors must bow their head in shame.”

“The great ancestor Liu Bang was a traitor to Xiang Yu himself,” Hao Xian says.

“Enough. Take my head and let it be over,” Huang Zhong says as he leans his neck out. You do not execute Huang Zhong however and order him to be freed. Huang Zhong looks at you.

“Know you that I shall return to Lord Liu Biao?”

“Though it may be a fright to let you live, it would also be a shame to kill a doughty warrior,” you tell Haung Zhong. “Go on and fulfill your duty.”

Huang Zhong dusts himself off. Without a word and only a small glance to you, he leaves Jiangxia. You order your men to pacify Jiangxia.

>>544179
WHAT THE FUCK
>>
>>544179
Why the fuck did we let Huang Zhong live so that he can fuck up Sun Jian's forces?

Even Liu Bei wouldn't be this retarded
>>
>>544179
noooo... we should have at least imprisoned him.
>>
>>544179
Oh yes.. 1000 elite soldiers with 400 close to becoming a crack squad with a nice blend of bonuses for us.
>>
>>544179

Thanks for running
>>
>>544179

yeah letting him go may wind up being a giant middle finger to sun jian

But at least if we catch him again he'll probably join us. Possibly after we beat Liu Biao
>>
It's Sun Ce all over again.
>>
>>544192
Equally high likelihood that he kills one of our officers in battle

Even it works out, this was objectively a pretty stupid thing to do on our end.
>>
>>544194
It's not Sun Ce again until a massive shitstorm starts that crashes the quest with no survivors.
>>
On the plus side:

>Wei Yan: A great general, good warrior, sound military tactics

>Cai Mao: Above average commander, okay warrior, okay politician

Good additions, especially Wei Yan since he's our third "great general" with sound military tactics.
>>
>>544179
Can we at least imprison him? He's gonna rekt some shit. This is Liu Chan level retarded
>>
>>544179
WHAT DID WE MISS IN THE CAO CAO CONVERSATION!!!!!
>>
If you guys would rather change Huang Zhong to being imprisoned and all agree to it, that's fine.

>>544216
Won't tell. But read the facts I laid out and try to figure out.
>>
>>544203
Nah, we're rivals now. It's the Buddhist thing to do with Catching and Releasing worthy foes instead of eating game for meat.
>>
>>544225

On further reading this, despite initial reservations i think i am ok with this.

1) We show that we are magnanimous to those who turn to join our cause.
2) That we still appreciate loyalty, even if that loyalty is to a lord other than us and that will speak well of us to other potential officers.
3) The armies of Sun and Zheng are going to overpower those of Liu. Its almost a foregone conclusion that our alliance will win so it is not too great a loss in the strategic sense as long as we dont lose officers in the upcoming battles.
>>
>>544225
I am fine with the exile, it's cooler.
>>
>>544225

How did we do in this session, really?
>>
>>544225
If one of the other lords managed to kill us, say cao cao or something, would Sun Jian avenge us?
>>
>>544225
I vote imprisoned. The alternative is too risky where we might lose officers because of a bad roll
>>
>>544225
I would vote for imprisoning him because Sun Jian is gonna be the one paying for our stupid decision.
>>
>>544225
Is the answer that Cao Cao's true aim is to recover the emperor and that any distractions to that goal would be unhelpful to him?
>>
>>544247
Well, it's like Final Destination with Sun Jian, I'm sorry to say.
>>
Awesome Zhang He and Huang Zhong rematch inbound?
>>
>>544247
Well, that would require Huang to make it alll the way there and try to explain what happened to his back lines. Likewise, there is nothing stopping us from supporting Sun Jian with our catapults.
>>
>>544254
Would it still be awesome if Zhang He gets his skull caved in?
>>
>>544225
Can we look for a chef/dietitian that knows medicinal cooking?
>>
>>544259
Yes, because that would be a quick death.
>>
We make the same gamble every time we agree to a duel. Now that it's said and done we might as well enjoy the rematch
>>
>>544264
Literally an unnecessary duel, but whatever, so long as people don't shitpost if things turn south because of these write-ins.
>>
>>544264
And just how he doesn't kill anyone important. If sun ce or someone dies, we're in for it.
>>
>wei yan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvO7s-L3PMk
>>
>>544225
Imprison him
>>544254
Kys retard, he'll kill Sun Jian or one of our officers
>>
I feel like a lot of people forgot something important with letting huang zhong go free again.

Why would his old boss trust him easily? I mean, he lost to a superior force, got betrayed by Wei Yan, and then what, just got cut loose? Who's going to believe him?

And even if Liu trusts him again, he's not going to TRUST HIM trust him. Next we meet, he's gonna get a subpar force to fight some badass with.

Or maybe I'm a complete moron making shit up. I dunno.
>>
This is now a benevolence thread.
>>
>>544659

This. For the love of God. This.

We've RUINED Huang Zhong's reputation with Liu Biao.

We took in TWO traitors to Liu Biao...and just let Huang Zhong go? Fishy as all fuck to Liu Biao
>>
>>545511
>>544659

Well shit. Color me fucking impressed.

Now that's strategy.
>>
>>545544
>Trips over a rock
>Manages a cartwheel
>"STRATEGY"
>>
>>544659

Ooo, thats a fair point.

This romp through liu biao's lands is a fun contrast to the time were here to be allies with liu biao as Zhu Xing.
>>
>>545555
To be fair, it's a pretty good cartwheel.
>>
Has this thread been archived yet?

Just did it myself, thought Sleepy or some other anon would do it.
>>
>>546044
Nah on my phone so I can't archive.
>>
How long are we going to stay a fucking virgin? Didn't fuck that doctor didn't fuck Wang Yi didn't fuck Du Ji's daughter
>>
>>546076
When we marry a little girl just like the great prophet did
>>
>>546076
Until you die anon.
>>
We're 25 years old. We should be fucking bitches all around.
>>
>>546159
If you want sex, anon, go and get some. Reading about it in a quest is a poor replacement.
>>
>>545555
The secret to good strategy is to make people think we meant to trip over that rock in the first place.

>>546076
Sun Jian promised us SSX if shit goes well, then we'll have our own Loli Waifu.
>>
>>547685
That aside, there is always the option of adoption. It was a big thing back then and I am sure some orphan will show potential.
