They arent anymore. It was just 5 years before being given citizenship, so by now they are regular citizens. Dwarves are pretty good at honoring their word.

A couple of weeks later, the Alchemical Furnaces have been completed, and we have been invited, along with the empress, general Li, and high priest Sun.

The furnaces are mostly buried underground, turning the ground into containment walls for the immense heat.

Several layers of firebricks cover the insides of the furnaces completely, and they are capable of many different functions, such as having material lowered into the furnace itself with a huge cauldron which is then bombarded with both magic and heat in order to cause the growth of Glassteel under pressure, which is then retrieved and used in the production of the imperial guards weaponry and, perhaps for the first time, armors.

This, to our surprise, means that glassteel is perhaps the only material we know of that is not obtained as loot, but its legitimately maufactured.

On the good side, it means that its cost is unlikely to fluctuate, and its availability is guardanteed, up to the production speed of the new furnaces.

On the other hand, it can devaluate the cost of dungeon drop materials in whatever city it is located, or, if there are enough dungeons and adventurers to farm them, it can be made non.competitive simply because the offer of better materials (such as mithril) can outpace the prodcudtion of the furnaces.

"How much glassteel can the new furnaces provide?" - general Li asks to one of our guides
"As much as 32 wagon loads a month, sir."

We look at Yin, and our fluffy-tailed assistant translates for our benefit.

"Using the new measurement units, that would be eight tons, sir." -she says helpfully
"Uhm... considering its as heavy as regular iron, it's not that much."
"We used to be able to produce no more than 1 ton a year up until now, sir, so it is a noticeable improvement."
"Oh, I see..."

Ren nods nods behind her. Her wooden sandals make a soft and almost musical pat pat sound as she walks down the catwalk (not directly) above the furnaces.

Well, a high level party such as ours could produce maybe half a ton of mithril a month if they visited the dungeons specifically for that material drop, right? but the huge majority of metal drops happen to be in dwarven lands.

Its to the point where you wonder if the inhabitants of the area help determine the drops a foodgeon will produce.

The spiderkin of Lapsiona have foodgeons that produce mostly insect meat and related drops, right? so its a distinct possibility.

"Indeed, I can't help but feel that these furnaces will pay for themselves within half a year. I'd encourage her majesty to support building more of them, but the production speed is already incredibly fast compared to anything we had before. We will be able to have a huge stockpile of glassteel many times beyond the Imperial Guard needs in a couple of months." -General Li says as he rubs his chin while looking at the still formant furnaces.

"Glassteel has been considered a holy substance for countless generations, but that was because only the guards closest to the empress were the only ones to field them. I'd rather not end up reinventing the wheel, as it were, and filling up our Menagerie slots with less than optimal offspring.

As for pregnancies, what about it taking a week for the offspring to form (data to compile) and it takes up a slot during that time.
Also a monster can only breed once every 9 months, or maybe make the cooldown a base 6 months with multipliers based on race and level?

By the way, in the morning, we found that Atroma was sleeping completely curled up under the sheets, and Tanis was sleeping spread like a cross next to Lyann, completely uncaring about the world.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if we could change the Class for Miel and Miel II? We leveled their Monster level to 100, but I assume we also leveled their Noble levels as well.

I think that since it doesnt really takes a toll on the primary monster, is not really neccessary? lore wise.

Not really. Miel was a monster at the beginning and we switched her to noble.

The problem is when you take someone who was never a monster and try to make them into one.

Also, Miel's jobs go "off" when she switches to monster and she just keeps monster levels.

Ah, so if one of our Pets were to be made into Villager/Nomad/Slave/Noble to get the Jobs and their attribute bonuses, they could do so, but once they switch back to their Monster Class, they lose access to those Jobs.
But it only works if someone was born a Monster, not if they were one of the "civilized races", including beastkin.

Athena was ready all day long to go out with us, oretty much just waiting for us to declare we were ready with school and labwork for the day.

She's wearing her very own light metallic armor set over her school uniform, and carrying a shortspear/staff around clutched against her chest.

She looks like a super adorable anime cosplayer in our eyes, with the difference that none of it is a prop. These are all real things she's been using in the dungeon, apparently.

Uhmm... are those leggings, pants or stockings? and she's wearing some rather amazingly high heels.

Let's take a look. With the [Ring of Knowledge], that is.

Those are some rather high quality footwear.
They are just 1 step down from [Legendary] quality, uh?

Their [Unbreakable] enhancement gives her +135% effect from healing and temporal HP shields, our of a possible 200%.

The [Greed] enhancement gives her +80% extra money drop (out of a max possible of +200%) whenever a monster drops money.

They have no armor rating, and instead grant her +35 Magical Defense Value.

I see, so they count as accessories, rather than as an armor part.

Well, there's no error in calling them high class.

We place an official request poster and go sit down on the second floor's messhall.

Of course the adventurer's guild offers meals. It doesn't handles sleeping rooms, though.

Don't misunderstand me. Of course we know table manners, but it's just what we came with from our previous world plus very specific etiquette knowledge for nobles, such as which fork goes with which dish.

Well, I wonder if our parents felt our manners were good enough? since we were aware right from the start, we never played with our food or acted spoiled at the table, after all.

If your toddler knew how to properly use the knife and fork, didin't whine about eating his greens, and quietly ate anything you placed on the table before him, then thanked you after the meal, I guess you wouldn't feel a need to teach him manners, either.

Both Athena and Zoe eat in a very delicate and elegant manner. They make no noise with their tableware, and take little bits to their lips. Sometimes, they use the flat of the knife as a spoon to lift up stray grains or little bits of food.

I think I could just watch them as they eat, and feel refreshed.

And some of them you can only get through breeding and evolving, right?

From what Landar tells us, [Breeding] needs an empty menagerie slot. It will take up to a month before one can call forth the new monster, and it will start as a level 1 monster of its species.

This may sound odd, but all monsters need the same exp to advance levels, even though some species grow more than others per level.

The important point is, once a low species reaches a high enough level, it can evolve to a totally new species or just into a subspecies.

Right, the harpies evolved into subspecies at levels 40 and 60. Krabby evolved into a subspecies of crab at level 80.

Fahima and Lyra on the other hand, evolved into completely different species when they reached level 100. They kept their attributes and abilities, but count as level 2 now.

And neither Atroma nor Tanis evolved in any way. Rather, they just gained new abilities.

"Doesn't that means that completely evolving a monster into a new species is the best way to go? since they keep their strength but get their level reset to 1 so its easy to level them back up again." -asks Athena after finishing her meal and carefully wiping her lips clean.

Sometimes they evolve into a new species, sometimes they evolve into a subspecies of the Primary's species, but most often the secondary just dissapears and the primary receives half of its attributes as bonus stats, plus an active skill.

That's not quite all, though. When I say active skill, its not just one skill, but a entire menu.

For example, "adding nana on top" to any of our pets will give that pet 1/2 of nana stats and nana's 'Healing Magic' submenu.

Yes but when you make them into a team their level goes down to 1 and their stats will always be 25% weaker than those of a 'normal' monster. This is to help balance out quality vs quantity.

Summoning two monsters at once would give you too big of an advantage otherwise.

They are typically indifferent, unlike in the wild. They didn't really spend any resources, energy or time, in order to bring the new monster to life. If anything, the owner is the one that had to sacrifice the most since s/he had a unusable menagerie slot for up to a month.

Oni are considered top-of-the-line and are very popular since they are very strong and you can get them as long as you catch enough goblins, which isnt hard to do.

Lion + Eagle = Gryffin, which is a hell of a lot easier than trying to catch a wild griffin.

Intelligent monsters are very popular since you can discuss strategy with them and they usually need a lot less direction in battle than beast types.

A centaur doesn't need as many instructions as a bear, for example, but you need to take a farmer's approach to your intelligent monsters since you may want to merge or release them later.

Keep in mind its a business relationship and don't grow attached to them.

Dragon nests are often raided for younglings, but the mortality rate of beastmasters trying to catch a youngling tends to be near the 3 digits since the parents defend them savagely. There's very little info as very few people have succeeded and those who have don't tend to share their secrets.

In order to help Athena, we spend the next four evenings going to the deeper dungeons in Eopolis and Mantequira, helping her raise her slave level to 100 in order to unlock scion.

This way, she can keep Bard on at the same time as Beastmaster.

We also set cook and herbalist as active jobs so we can get better drops.
We are mostly hunting for cards, though.

On the 3rd evening out, her slave class reaches 100, so she can have beastmaster and bard on at the same time now.

"Alright, which monster do you want to be your first catch? we need to go out of the dungeon, though." -we ask her after confirming that she has properly set up Beastmaster/Bard as her new active jobs.

Adrianna comes back first, and offers to guide us towards the minotaurs.

Once everyone else is back as well, we head after her.

These guys, they're really huge!

Even the youngest looking children (calfs?) are already taller than Athena.

By the way, there's a extreme difference between the male and the females.
Just like with beastkins, the males look pretty much like humanoid versions of beasts, while the females look basically human except for the horns, tail and... well, rather large milk bags.

Except that they, too, are huge.
By the way, I don't have an amazon fetish, so my interest is between "none" and "oh, I wonder if we could trade with them."

Well, we did capture Fahima and Tanis, so its not as if we ever had scruples about sentient monsters.
Of course, it helps that you cant normally communicate with monsters, so their noise is just that, noise.
Assuming they have enough intelligence and the proper equipment for it, they can talk with you once you catch them, though.

That's how it was with Fahima.

Looking through the [Ring of Knowledge], the highest leveled member of the group is just level 50.

As a whole, the herd is rather scary, since there's lots of lvl 40+, though.
