/qst/ - Quests

In the late seventies through the early nineties, drug violence in South America only continued to escalate. A successful revolution by the IRA in Ireland encouraged similar revolts in central Africa that devolved into decades-long civil wars, and resulted in a USSR faction in the Russian government. Human trafficking for both the organ and the sex trades exploded between south-east Asia and eastern Europe. In the face of such chaos, government run militaries and various agencies were too caught up in red tape to be effective. Frustrated with procedure causing a lack of results, the wealthier citizens of the world turned to someone who would not be weighed down by the bureaucratic process.

Now, in 2032, the private military industry is a widely accepted fact of life, a necessary evil for the security of the world. While some resent these men for what they represent, still more turn to them when government forces would fail.

You are Jan Kowalski, a Polish special forces operator turned private military contractor. In return for cash and other liquid currency, you, and men like you, go places national militaries refuse, and that local police forces avoid.

Handler's Twitter: twitter.com/ContractorQM

Last time on Contractor Quest: You bought a shotgun, finally met a marksman that ISN'T Solomon Hyun, flew to Miami, and nearly blinded a veteran contractor
>>
Starting today off a little differently. Last time, I dropped the d100 for a 3d10. Here's how it's going to work

You'll still give me the standard 3 rolls against a a preset DC. However, rather than skills and equipment bonuses taking a way DC, you can use them to increase rolls before results are announced.

Example: you roll a 15,12, and a 17 against a mystery DC to shoot someone with fishgun. Very mediocre. I'll call a vote, allowing you to use your points, off the top of my head, 8, 5 for skill and 3 for equipment, to add to the highest roll. These will reset periodically, probably after an extended period of time out of combat. Any questions?
>>
>>563042
Seems pretty good. Good to have you back Handler!
>>
>>563042

Sounds good to me, at least we'll be able to see how it works
>>
Alright, so last time we fucked up a lot. I asked on Twitter if we wanted to start where we left off, or bring it all back to the top, but no one got back to me.

What do you guys want to do?
>>
>>563343
How badly are we fucked?
>>
>>563343

I say we keep on from where we left off, these things happen especially in combat and they suck but it adds to the realism of the world. Plus I feel like while in the short term we'll get shit for it but as long as we are not asshats and show we're competent moving forward it wont follow us for too long. Every veteran has a few of those "Oh shit I fucked up bad" moments under their belt, it's almost unavoidable, you just have to survive them
>>
>>563343
Eh, let's leave it.
Also, lovely to see you this evening handler.
>>
>>563343
I just want to see Harrison get his own comeuppance with a critfail so he'll get off our back.
>>
Sorry about that. Got dragged over to the sister in laws for supper.

Last thread anons wanted to call for a surrender. If that sounds good, give me 3 rolls of 3d10. If it doesn't, suggest something else.

Write ins will lower the DC. You have no charisma points to raise your roll here
>>
>>563375
Not too terribly bad. Miller came in clutch and very possibly saved the lives of both you and Harris. Yves is pretty pumped about that.

Then you critfailed the roll to call for a surrender, so I took my ball and went home to work out this 3d10
>>
Rolled 9, 9, 1 = 19 (3d10)

You take a moment to shake the stars from your eyes, and the ringing from your ears. Luckily, sounds like one of the idiots shot himself in the foot, so they’re done shooting through the floor.

“Come down peacefully,” you shout up the stairs. “We just want O’Neal and the guns!”

“Nigga, fuck you,” the response comes eloquently from upstairs. “Y’all just fuckin’ flashbanged yourselves. Come get ‘em!”

As if on cue, another burst comes from outside, and you can hear them dive from cover upstairs.

Miller turns to you and Harris. “Well, they wanted us to try. We tried. Should we do it the hard way,” he asks, apparently down from his adrenaline high.

“Looks like we’ll have to,” Harris says as he discards a pair of magazines his armor couldn't save. “Damn shame.”

>Plan of action?
>Unknown number of enemies, two wounded. They are suppressed for the time being. However, time spent suppressing these men is time not spent on others.
>>
>>564106
Should we have Harris throw a flash this time?
>>
>>564106
Is there another way upstairs?
Some other angle that we can attack from, to make up for what happened?
>>
>>564127
There are outside windows, but the platform has narrow walkways next to the building. You could get boosted up inside, but it'd be kinda easy to see what you're doing
>>
>>564144
Could we get a flashbang in through one of the windows?

Then when the upstairs is flashed, Harris and Miller charge up the stairs?
Or we can charge up with Miller, while Harris throws a flashbang throw the window.
>>
>>564261
If you get support for it, sure can
>>
Okay, anyone else got any ideas?
>>
>>563042
I don't like this system. 3d10 averages at 16.5. If this is very mediocre, and we have only 8 points to spare on improving results per mission, we'll just fail constantly.
>>
>>564261
I don't think we'd be trusted with a grenade in the nearest future, so let Harris throw the flashbang from outside, preferrably through the window that still has its glass unbroken. This will have the added advantage of distracting the opponents. Then us and Miller can charge upstairs.

Reload with the nonlethal rounds beforehand. We don't want to kill O'Neal accidentally.
>>
>>564827
This sounds good. We need to bang these guys, and we derped the last throw, so time for someone else to give it a try.
>>
>>564827
Yeah. We shouldn't touch grenades for the near future. Fuck, we still need K9 training for Casimir.

Sorry guys. Figured after an hour and a half with one response was a no go. I'll be around all day today, though, so we can run on and off

Ok, let's give it a shot
>>
>>570023
So are we actually doing this?

>>570326
Ded thread?

Nope, we're powering through. Looks like we want Harris to send a flashbamg through a window while we storm the stairs

Give me 3 rolls of 3d10, and we'll get going

Not dealing with 85 d10 rolls so enemies get d100s.

They don't have this many. Just masking the number since you haven't gotten a look at their forces yet
>>
Rolled 10, 9, 8, 4, 9, 10 = 50 (6d10)

Also, you guys have 10 minutes to decide if you want to spend any skill or equipment points on improving your roll. It's currently a 20
>>
Rolled 4, 1 = 5 (2d10)

>>570851
Mother fuck. Odd is you, Even is Miller. Second roll is for where
>>
>>570855

I'm actually good, 20 out of thirty on 3d10 isn't that bad on a bellcurve. Certainly not dropping a grenade at our feet bad.
>>
>>570855
What do we get for the red-dot sight and foregrip on the Saiga?
>>
>>570872
You have a total of three. Two for the red dot, one for the foregrip. You have no skill points in shotgun, though
>>
>>570879
I think we already hit the DC on it?
If so, I'd rather save the bonus for later.
>>
“I’m gonna creep around outside,” Harris starts, also shaking the ringing from his ears. “I’ll toss a flasgbang into a window, then you to head up and start kicking ass.”

You and Miller nod, and Yves slaps a fresh magazine into his M4. Harris leaves out the door, and you and the Frenchman stack up on the staircase.

Nathan tells Cooper to move onto other targets when the flash bursts over the comms, and several seconds later, you hear the loud crack and see the flash of light.

Rushing upstairs, you immediately unload two shells of buckshot into a poor urban youth, shredding his torso. Miller drops a second dazed man, but slams back against the wall, swearing in French. The wooden wall next to you gets three small explosions as the rounds strike frighteningly close.

The flashbang seems to wearing off, and the remaining four men dive behind cover. Judging from the bulk, O’Neal is definitely one of them. You and Miller take your own cover and consider your options.

>Round 4 over
>Kowalski: 1 kill
>Miller: 1 kill, hit. Status unknown
>4 enemies remaining, unknown armaments. Some are taking penalties. No longer under suppression.

Can we tell where O'Neal went?
Shoot through the cover that the others are behind.
Furniture is no proof against bullets.
>>
>>570979

Let's get behind cover ourselves. If we still have our gasmask, now is the time for the CS/Teargas grenades we brought.

We're in an enclosed space with a guy we WANT alive, right?

You know which one is O'Neal, yes.

Don't we take the highest roll?
>>
>>571251

Not certain, the pastebin hasn't been updated for it. I thought it was the set DC with the 3 rolls being taken into account with how many passed the DC or failed
>>
>>571342
I take the highest. I was originally going to do it that way, but I switched from D100 to avoid so many crit fails. I felt doing it that way would not fix that problem. I do need to update the pastebin, though.

Do we want to spend any points?

I'd be willing to spend 4 to bump it up to 25, definitely don't want to fuck up the gas and this is the jackpot as far as the job goes

You unhook your gas mask from your belt, and motion at Miller, who is now halfway down the staircase, to do the same.

Masks firmly affixed to both of you, you take a CS grenade from your vest, and lob it to the other side of the room. The hissing starts after a moment, and the choking and coughing immediately after.

You take a peek around the support beam you’re using as cover, to see the man with a wounded foot drag himself over and dive out the window into the water below.

“That wasn't too smart, was it,” you hear Harris’ gruff voice from outside, shortly before three gunshots.

O’Neal pops out from his own cover. He isn't having a fun time. Eyes watery, nose running like a faucet, and struggling to breathe. This makes it fairly impressive he manages to get a few shots of his handgun off, even if they do miss by about fifteen feet.

You shoot back into cover anyway. The way this op has gone, you aren't taking chances.

Letting the saiga fall to its sling, you pull your other new toy from its pouch behind your chest armor.

You motion to Yves to give you some covering fire, and he unscrews his suppressor before halfheartedly firing into the ceiling. He doesn't have to try to hard to keep heads down, even from halfway down the stairs.

You load a tranq dart into the pistol, and let it fly with the hiss of compressed air. The feathered projectile sinks into O’Neal’s considerable gut. He curses and continues firing his pistol blindly, the rounds striking the wall behind you.

“Miller,” you half-shout over the coughing and sputtering, “We really don’t need the rest of these guys, do we?”

A cruel smile crosses his face, and he say something in French. He pops out from the cover of the stair well, and fires through a TV and it’s stand. A choked scream comes from the other side, and a hand flops around the side, unmoving and pooling with blood.

You take a similar approach, and use your buckshot to shred both an old couch and the basketball fan behind it. Two down, but O’Neal is still up, as is one of his cronies. They’re taking potshots from behind cover, but they’d probably need an actual miracle to hit you.

As the ridiculously one-sided exchange ends, Harris appears at the bottom of the stairs.

“You two got it?”

Miller grunts in response, and Harris replies with another grunt. Those two spend too much time around each other.

“Hey, dumbass,” you shout into the room. “Fatty here is going to topple, and everyone else is dead. Toss out your gun, and we won’t kill you, too.”

A few seconds of silence, followed by the skittering of a pistol being thrown out. You step carefully out of cover, Miller covering you with his M4. You affix the plasticuffs to both this man and Jamal O’Neal.

For the first time in what seems like hours, there’s silence. Well, other than Cooper and Roman taking periodic pot shots to keep heads inside. Important not to forget you have five more buildings to go through. Especially since the guns and drugs in this one were minor.

“What’s the plan, now,” Roman asks over the comms. “O’Neal secure? Other evidence?”
