Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“You want a what-now?”

“A guy's night in!” Chuichi exclaims, leaning back in his chair.

You tap you foot on the ground, folding your arms. Chuichi's excited suggestion hasn't exactly hooked you yet. “And... why do you want that?”

Chuichi places his hands behind his head. You don't think that guy can ever look anything less than completely casual. “Well, Kiriko and a few other chicks are taking Mayu for a girls' night out now that she's allowed out of the nurses' office. So I was thinking that while they're out of the dorms, us guys can chill out around here and have some fun.”

“Have fun?” You ask. “Chuichi, you're pretty much the only guy friend I have around here.”

“And doesn't that bother you?” Chuichi asks. “I mean, I barely know any of the guys in our class besides you either. I like the girls and all, but being the only guy in that club must be frustrating sometimes, especially when you aren't dating any of them.”

You shrug. “Eh, it doesn't bother me. Besides, considering that our class has someone like Tsuki in it, I think I'm safe not getting to know them a little better.”

“Okay, then we won't invite Tsuki,” Chuichi shrugs. “Don't want a guy like that hanging around anyway. But what about Gado? He's pretty cool right?”

“Yeah, but he's pretty intimidating,” you explain. “And I don't think he trusts me very much. Besides, we'd have a hard time trying to pull that guy away from Kuin.”

“I'm sure we can manage it,” Chuichi replies. “There's also guys like Makoto, Ukon... Atasuke may be pretty creepy sometimes, but he seems to be a pretty nice guy. There's also some of our more mysterious classmates. Don't you want to know more about guys like Taiyo and Anri?”

Anri... you upset him the other day with some pretty rude comments. Perhaps inviting him to a night in might be a good way of apologising.

“And what do you propose we do on this night in?” you ask.

“I don't know,” Chuichi shrugs. “We sit around, we chat, maybe watch a movie or something. Just get more familiar with our fellow brethren.”

“I don't know, I was hoping to try and make things up to Mayu for what happened...”

“You can do that in class!” Chuichi waves his hand as he sits up to ready his bag. “Besides, Kiriko's sold on their thing being a girl's night out. Otherwise, I would have come along to try and flirt with Mayu a little.”

“That reminds me, how did it go when you visited her?” you ask. “Did your list of jokes do anything for her?”

“Nope,” Chuichi shakes his head. “Not a single one. I had every joke I knew on that list, long and short, pun and anecdote, and she didn't find humour in a single one of them.”

“I'm sure you'll find something to make her laugh eventually,” you reply.

“Here's hoping,” Chuichi replies. “Let's focus on this guy's night. Are you in or not?”

>Sure, I'm in. Sounds like fun.

>Sure, I'm in. Sounds like fun.

"Awesome," Chuichi replies. "I knew you'd be up for it. Hey, maybe I could even invite some of the guys from the other classes, like Class 2 or 3. There's that Hiro kid who's super nice to everyone, and I bet you want to get to know that Ryoji guy you rescued-"

"No," you reply. You remember back to yesterday morning when Ryoji Shida of Class 2 came by the door to the dorms, demanding that you give him your stone. The stone given to you as a gift from the father. The same stone that you've been told in countless visions never to let out of your hands. You don't know if this Ryoji is a bad guy or just misguided, but you can't trust him. "I, uhh... I already met Ryoji. He's kind of an ass. Classic delinquent."

"Really?" Chuichi asks. "Huh... Isn't he dating the principal's granddaughter? You'd think he couldn't be all that bad..."

"Well... he is," you reply. "Let's... let's just keep it to Class 1. We don't want things to get too crowded, do we?"

"Yeah, I get it what you're saying," Chuichi nods. "Better to learn more about our own class first before we start branching out into others. Well, we've got a lot of guys we need to invite today, and I think some of them will need some convincing."

"Gado?" you suggest.

"And Taiyo, and Roka if we want him to come. Isn't Anri kinda mad at you, too?"

"Yeah he is," you sigh. "I'll take care of it. I promise."

Chuichi stretches out as the two of you step out into the hallway, ready to head on to class. "So, agreed that we're limiting this to being a class 1 affair?" Chuichi mutters.

"Agreed," you reply, standing by the dormitory exit. "Right now, I'd rather not deal with any of the other classes."

You pull the door open, to reveal a rather tall boy in a cowboy hat who was just about to knock.

"Kazuma Asai?" the boy asks.

"Yeah, that's me..." you reply. "What do you want?"

"My name is Maro Kojima," he explains. "I'm head of Class 3. I need to speak with you for a moment, do you have the time?"

Dammit, this is exactly the kind of person you wanted to avoid. Still, Maro doesn't seem to be demanding anything off of you like Ryoji did, and it would give you an excuse to be late to class... but what if he tries to drag you into something? Maybe you should just stay away.

>Sure, I've got a few minutes to spare.
>But can you be quick? I'll be late for class.

"I always make things quick and simple," Maro explains. He pauses, before staring at Chuichi.

"Oh... I suppose that's my cue to leave?" Chuichi asks.

"Yes," Maro answers.

Chuichi shrugs. "Okay... catch you in class, Kaz. Enjoy your top-secret information."

As Chuichi wanders off, you turn your head back to Maro. "So, what are you asking about?"

"Kazuma, you know exactly what this is about. It's about your stone."

You sigh. "I didn't know that for certain. There's plenty of reasons someone would want to talk to me other than this rock."

"There's not," Maro explains. "As I understand, you're reluctant to hand that stone over to anyone but yourself."

"Yes," you reply. "The safest hands are my own."

"I see," Maro mutters. "But I also understand that this stone contains great power, power that could be very useful in fighting the Darkworld. Power that is being sought after by several demons. You have a target on your back, Kazuma."

"That's fine," you reply. "Let them come. I'm not afraid of demons."

"That's good," Maro replies, "Because you're coming with my class on a mission tomorrow. And there'll be demons. Likely a lot of them."

"What are you talking abou-"

"A new breach between the Darkworld and our reality opened up over a small town not far from here. As you can imagine, this can spell total disaster, perhaps even the apocalypse, if we don't make a move to contain the threat. We want you to come with us. Sayeka Ohko tells us that your stone may be key to saving us all."

"Wait..." you mutter. "You're telling me that you want to take me on a mission to fight demons? With the top class?"

"Don't get carried away with excitement," Maro replies. "This isn't an honour. It's a duty. We have to make preparation, but we'll be setting off in the early hours tomorrow. I suggest you prepare yourself. Now... go to class. Your education is very important."

You nod, and rush towards homeroom. You can't believe it... another breach in reality. You bet it was caused by The Stranger when he performed that ritual in the Darkworld. You know you can't trust Ryoji with the stone, it could just be The Stranger looking to open more breaches.

You step into class, give a half-hearted apology to Takeshi for being late, and sit down and doze off listening to music from your headphones until the bell goes for first break. Your education is important, and one day you'll pay attention in class. But this is not that day.

As you ready your books at your desk, you are approached by a fresh faced Mayu. She must have felt trapped while she was cooped up in the nurse's office. You're sure she's glad to be free, even if she shows little emotion on the outside. She seems to be holding a small wrapped box down by her side, trying to look casual with it. As she reaches your desk, she holds it out and offers it to you.

"What's this?" you ask.

"It's a gift," Mayu replies in a matter-of-fact tone. "You're aware of the concept of gifts, correct?"

"Yeah, but why are you giving me one?"

Mayu pauses. "It's... it's for visiting me while I was recovering."

"Mayu..." you sigh. "I was the one who injured you."

"Which only makes it all the braver that you would visit," Mayu replies. "As I understand, we are supposed to be friends now, and as my friend, you are obligated to accept my gift. Please do so, it's unsuited for anyone else but you."

>Mayu, I can't in good conscience accept that. Sorry.

>Okay, but only because you insist.

You reluctantly take the package off of Mayu's hands and begin to open it up.

"Be careful with the wrapping paper," Mayu warns you. "I like to re-use it."

You sigh, working as calmly and as steadily as you can to unwrap the box. You pull the lid off to reveal a rather pretty looking silver chain. "Huh... what's this for?" you ask.

"Apologies if it's not up to standard," Mayu states. "I noticed that the string necklace you use to hold your gemstone has snapped numerous times already, and I felt it was due for a replacement. I know it's not much, but I hope you like it."

"I do... thanks," you smile. "You know, usually after getting a gift from a friend, we'd usually hug, but I figure you-"

"I'd rather you didn't," Mayu states.

"Yeah, though so. Just checking," you laugh. "So, girl's night out tonight?"

"I'm afraid so," Mayu sighs. "I honestly think it's unnecessary, but Kiriko insisted that we would enjoy ourselves. I'm willing to believe her."

"I think this is the part where I act all responsible and ask you not to get carried away and flirt with Kiriko," you joke.

"Heavens, no. I wouldn't understand how to flirt," Mayu replies. "However, I cannot promise that I won't try to make Kiriko fall in love with me."

"Well... go nuts," you smile. "It's your special night, Mayu."

"Thank you, Kazuma."

"We're friends, Mayu. Call me Kaz."

"I refuse to do that," Mayu replies. "I will speak to you later, Kazuma."

You shrug. Oh well, guess you should use first break to try and invite someone to the guy's night. You run through the class list, thinking of every guy in class. Chuichi already knows, of course. The whole thing was his idea. Then there's Makoto, the goody-two-shoes head of class. He's probably with his just as overly cheery and moral sister. There's Atasuke, who is... overly flirtatious with people, regardless of gender. Nice guy, but can come on way too strong.

There's Ninsei, a guy you don't think you've ever spoken to. He likes to keep to himself mostly, has his own private garden behind the school building. There's Taiyo, another loner. He's usually feeding animals by the school gate, but the question is whether or not he'll shy away if you approach him. Tsuki... is a flat no. That guy tried to grope Kiriko, and he's been creepy with a few more of the girls as well. Not inviting a guy like that.

Anri wasn't in class today, like usual. Probably hiding out in his dormroom. Whether he comes along or not, you should probably visit anyway to apologise for how you spoke to him the other day. Gado is likely getting some ice-cream for Kuin right now, though pulling him away from Kuin for one night will be difficult. He's so protective of that scamp he'll probably tag along on the girl's night out. Ukon will likely be in the gym, playing something.

Finally, there's Roka. Damn... you don't know if you want to invite him or not. He's a dumb brutish ass, but you found yourself feeling a little bad for him the other day, learning that he has a soft spot for the fake love letters Kiriko's been sending him as a prank. But on the other hand... it's still Roka.

>Atasuke

Atasuke seems to be the affable type, having him take part in the guy's night in will probably be an easy sell. You fix the silver chain that Mayu gave you around your neck with a smile as you step out of the homeroom, in search of Atasuke. You don't see him in the corridors, he must have already gone outside while you were talking to Mayu. You step out into the courtyard and catch a glimpse of Atasuke, on his way to... the running track? Odd, and he seems to be in a hurry.

You follow closely behind Atasuke, trying to catch up with him, as he finally comes to a stop, staring out on the running track as a blonde girl and a blonde boy from Class 2 are training. As Atasuke keeps an eye on them, a huge grin develops on his face.

"Look at them!" he exclaims. "Young love in it's most physical form. The beauty! The sexual tension! Her athletic figure, her perfectly sculpted face, and her godly buttocks! His bulging muscles, his finely toned abs and sharp chin, and his godly buttocks! Ohoh! The only thing that could make it more perfect would be to insert myself into the picture!"

"I mean... I guess they're pretty attractive," you reply. "But are you spying on them?"

"What's this?" Atasuke spins around dramatically looking you in the eye. "Why, if it isn't the handsome devil Kazuma Asai! How rude of you to sneak up on a poor defenceless boy like me!"

"Wait, you didn't realise I was here?" you ask. "So... were you just talking to yourself?"

"Of course!" Atasuke laughs. "There is no finer conversational partner than Atasuke Toyama!"

"Right..." you mutter. "Anyway, I just came to tell you that we were planning to have a guy's night in the dorms, and you're invited."

"Oh... that is a tempting offer..." Atasuke pauses, "But I'm afraid I already told myself that I would join the beautiful ladies in their night on the town!"

"You can't do that," you reply.

"Why on earth not?" Atasuke asks. "I'll have you know, I don't take kindly to being ordered around... depending on the situation."

"For one, it's a girls night out, and you're not a girl."

"Oh, that's such a wishy-washy reason!" Atasuke protests. "The females of Class 1 will love me like one of their own! Perhaps you should find a proper reason to seduce me to your side, Kazuma?"

>You won't be welcome if you try to tag along with the girls. They'll hate you.

>I mean... the boys of Class 1 are hotter than the girls, right?

"O-ho! Don't get too ahead of yourself, Kazuma!" Atasuke laughs. "The lovely ladies of Class 1 are all the fairest of beauties... but I can't deny that the boys are also delightful! There's no denying the attractiveness of a big strong man like Gado Nemoto, or the undeniable boyish good looks of the ever-innocent Makoto Shibata... and of course, the somewhat slovenly but roguish features of one Kazuma Asai!"

Atasuka gives a flirtatious wink as you shrug. "Glad you find me attractive, but that doesn't answer my question. Are you coming to this boy's night or what?"

"I will take you up on your offer!" Atasuke laughs. "It's a date!"

"It's really not, all of us will be there."

"Then it's an org-"

"I'm going to go now," you interrupt. "Have fun creeping on attractive couples."

"Oh, you know I will!" Atasuke cheerfully smiles and waves. "Farewell, Kazuma! I shall rendezvous with you later on!"

Well, he's incredibly forward. Still, it's good to know that he'll be coming along... but you hope he can keep it in his pants. Maybe you shouldn't have enticed him with the promise of hot boys...

You return to the main school building, and as you enter the foyer, you see Gado speaking to Kiriko, Mayu, Tami and Risa. Kuin is standing right behind him, hidden by his tall frame as he hands Kiriko a slip of paper.

"And this is a list of all of her allergies, you should review it several times over before going out and ordering food. She will try to order something she's allergic to, and you will have to stop her."

"I have to say Gado," Kiriko smiles, "I think it's awfully sweet how concerned you are about Kuin's safety. But you don't have to worry, it'll just be a fun night out! Nothing bad's going to happen, especially not with all of us around. You can count on us!"

"I hope so," Gado replies. "Because if something bad happens to Kuin, if there's even a scratch on her head by the time she gets back, I will never forgive you."

"Yikes... well, the pressure is on I guess!" Kiriko nervously laughs.

"That's all well and good," Kuin says, shoving in front of Kiriko, "But now it's time you hear my list of commands as your benevolent dictator! Demand number one, we absolutely must stop in at the arcade..."

As the girls walk on with Kuin, Gado catches up to you. "Kazuma, wait."

"Huh?" you ask. "Shouldn't you be guarding the little squirt."

"Kuin ordered me to take the day off from guarding her while she hangs out with the other girls..." Gado explains. "I was very reluctant, but she insisted. I can only hope that all the girls in class together will do as good a job as myself in protecting her."

"I'm sure Kuin will be fine," you assure him. "So, what's up?"

"I want to talk to you about what happened last time we were in the Darkworld," Gado states. "When we were in the cave, and you stabbed Mayu."

"Yeah..." you mutter. You don't really want to be reminded of that. "What about it?"

"You have to understand," Gado sighs. "Kazuma... I don't trust you around Kuin anymore. At the current moment, you're... unstable, to say the least. I hate to say it, but I'd prefer it if you kept your distance from her until you can deem you as no longer being a threat."

>You can't trust me? Gado, I thought we were friends.

>You can't trust me? Gado, I thought we were friends.

"To say we were friends is an exaggeration," Gado remarks. "But yeah... I like you Kazuma. I think you're a good man. But tell me honestly... do you trust yourself?"

You don't even have to think about it. "No... I don't."

"Then how can I trust you?" Gado replies. "I'm sorry Kazuma. I'd still like to spend time with you, but... you should spend less time with Kuin for a while."

"But you two are inseparable," you reply. "How could I spend time with you if you want me to stay away from her?"

"That's the dilemma, isn't it?" Gado sighs. "You know, I do have tonight free."

"Good," you reply. "Because we were planning on throwing a guys' night in, and you're invited... as long as you promise not to spend the whole time worrying about Kuin and just relax."

"Fine... I can do that," Gado replies. "But you have to allow me five moments of worrying about Kuin throughout the night."

"Three."

"Deal," Gado agrees. "Sorry, it's just that I've made Kuin my responsibility, and she's... small, and squishy. And she bruises like a peach. I'll feel guilty if anything happens to her."

"Don't worry about it," you reply. "Kiriko's responsible. And it'll be good for Kuin to hang out with the other girls."

"That's what Kuin told me," Gado mutters. "Said that sometimes she wanted to feel welcome among her 'loyal masses'... I think that's code for her wanting to feel like a normal girl."

The two of you make your way back to the homeroom class, as you gather your bags. You make your way onto history class for the next few periods. To your surprise, Anri actually attends this one, but goes rushing back to the dorms the second the bell for lunch rings. Welp, with this free time you should get around to inviting more classmates. Maybe you should focus on the guys that could use a little more convincing. You're sure Chuichi could manage to snag the more social members of class. Now, who to invite?

>Anri

You suppose it's time you just went ahead and bit the bullet. Anri's most likely still angry with you, but it's not too late to make amends with the guy. Anri went rushing off into the direction of the dorms, so that's where you'll go as well. You follow Anri's path towards the dorm, and you see him enter his room. With a hesitant sigh, you walk up to the door and give a knock.

No answer. You should have expected this. You suppose Anri's not the type of guy to really answer the door, he would rather pretend that he isn't inside in order to avoid contact. But he can't avoid this. Neither of you can.

You knock on the door again, yet again to no answer. This time, you try calling into the room. "Hello? Anri? It's me... Kazuma."

Anri refuses to answer, but you can hear the sounds of him rummaging around inside the room. You knock and try talking some more. "I know you're in there, Anri. I just want to talk about what I said the other day. Is that okay?"

Still no answer. "I'm going to take your silence as a yes," you say through the door, as you begin to turn the handle. "Just to warn you, I'm coming in..."

You swing open the door to see Anri standing in the middle of the room, his naked back facing you as he changes shirts.

"Oh my god!" Anri panics, quickly throwing his jacket over himself and zipping up all the way before turning to face you. "K-Kazuma, you can't just barge into someone's room like that! I was in the middle of changing!"

You shrug. "Don't lose your head, you were only shirtless. I've seen Chuichi without a shirt on plenty of times, it's normal for guys. It's not like I brought any girls in. You're safe, dude."

"Are... are you serious?" Anri asks, staring at you with wide-eyes and a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah," you reply. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Are you really so dens-you know what? It's nothing..." Anri sighs, his arms firmly crossed. "What was so important that you needed to breach my privacy?"

"It's about what I said to you the other day," you reply.

"Oh yes," Anri mutters. "When you called me a crazy paranoid kid who was just playing detective? I recall that vividly."

"I also called you 15," you add. "I remember because you were eager to correct me."

"Please get to the point," Anri pouts.

>I'm sorry for what I said, and I'd like to make it up to you.

>I'm sorry for being an ass about it... but I stand by what I said.

"It does?" Anri asks, un-amused.

"Yeah," you reply. "Come on, man. You can't just go around accusing everyone in your class of murder just based on a simple whim. You have been acting paranoid and you had to be called out for it... I just could have done it with a little more tact, and for that I'm sorry."

"No..." Anri mutters. "I'm sorry. You were right, this murder case... it's just been a pet project. Something I can amuse myself with... but from now on, I'm vowing to take it seriously. I honestly believe that Yasunari was murdered, but I'm not going to get anywhere by pointing the finger at everyone without any real evidence."

"That's the spirit, I guess..." you mutter. "Still have my doubts that the guy was murdered in the first place, but... huh, I just noticed how messy your room is."

It's true, you were caught up in talking to Anri that you never even realised... you can't even see the floor of the room. It's covered in stacks of paper, various sheets and photographs, and many more line the walls of the room. This is definitely the bedroom of a paranoid detective. Huh... what's this? That's a picture of Gado. And there seems to be something written underneath, some kind of profile. You can't make out what it says at this distance. You look around and see various other notes on members of the class. Pinned to the wall includes some apparent information on Tsuki, Taiyo, Risa and yourself. And next to the picture of you... is that a picture of your mother? It is... a picture of Namika Mashita, your mother, sitting in her home.

"You've really done your snooping, haven't you?" you ask, approaching the sheets of information written on you and your family.

"Umm, all of this is classified," Anri mutters, putting his hands on you and guiding you toward the door. "It's all my own independent research, it's... it's not for you to read, sorry."

So, Anri did his research and now he knows all about you and your family, and yet he's still a complete mystery himself.

"Hang on," you sigh. "I also wanted to invite you to something."

"That's nice, but I'm not interested," Anri mutters nervously.

"No, it's just a guys' night in," you explain. "Right here, in the dorms."

"A guys'... what?" Anri asks. "And you're... inviting me?"

"Yeah, why not?" you ask. "I'd like to know you better, Anri."

"I don't want you to know me better," Anri fires back.

"Well, I'm sure you'd like to know the rest of us guys better," you smile. "And not for investigative purposes either... just to be friends."

"Friends...?" Anri asks. "And... and this will be all the boys?"

"Whoever comes along, yeah."

"A lot of the boys... in the same room? Doing... boyish things? With each-other?" Anri asks, his face turning a little red.

"Dude, you okay? You're looking a little flushed-"

"I'm in," Anri states, an eagerness in his voice you've never heard before. "I... I'll come along."

"Excellent," you smile. "I'll see you later, then."

Well... you never though Anri would be up for it, but you somehow managed to convince him. You suppose the idea of making friends suddenly appealed to the kid. Anyway, there's still time left during lunch, so you could probably invite one more person before you have to return to class. But who?

>Ukon

Ukon seems like a good, if overly excitable kid. You should invite him around as well. Plus, it won't take long searching for him. You know exactly where he's going to be. That boy never leaves the gymnasium.

You make your way out of the dormitory and make your journey towards the school's gymnasium. As you arrive, opening up the door to the gym hall, you are met with a soccer ball spinning wildly towards your face. You don't have any time to react, as the ball hits you square in the nose, moving at such and incredible speed that you're surprised the damn thing hasn't caught aflame.

"LOOK OUT!" you hear Ukon's high-pitched voice call out, far too late to safe you. You topple to the ground, falling flat on your back as the red-headed boy rushes to your aid... no wait, he's just grabbing the ball. That's fine, you'll wait.

After he saves his precious soccer ball, Ukon rushes towards you to make sure you're alright. "Oh, geez! Sorry about that, Kaz!" he chuckles nervously, as he help you to your feet. "Doesn't like it hurt you too bad! Your nose is only bleeding a little!"

"My nose is bleeding?" you sigh.

"Only a little!" Ukon laughs. "Could have been worse! So, what brings you to the gymnasium?"

Before you can answer, Ukon continues to speak, not letting you get a word in. He talks fast, and he talks a lot.

"Oh, I got it! Are you here to finally take on my challenge to a game? Are you? Are you? Are you?"

"Well, I-"

"What game do you want to play? Basketball, Soccer? We could go outside and gather teams and play baseball, what do you think about that? Huh? Huh? Huh?"

"Ukon!" you exclaim, trying to grab his attention. "It's almost the end of lunch. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't have time to play a game with you."

"Aww..." Ukon pouts. "Then what are you here for?"

"I wanted to invite you to hang out with a few more of the guys tonight in the dorms," you reply. "Just have a chill night in while the girls are all in town."

"Sounds like fun!" Ukon smiles. "I accept!"

"Nice, it'll be good to have you-"

"On one condition!" he yells. Oh boy, here we go.

"Let me guess, you want me to-"

"I want you, to play one full match of whatever sport you want!" Ukon replies. "And it has to be within the next week! Deal?"

You sigh, which for whatever reason Ukon takes as a yes.

"Excellent!" he smiles. "But don't be so down about it, Kaz! I'll let you pick the sport! Go ahead!"

"Haha!" Ukon laughs. "I knew you'd pick a good one! You have a real eye for sport, I can tell!"

"I really don't," you reply. "The sport doesn't mean much to me. You'll probably win, I'm sure you practice basketball every day."

"It's no so surefire if you grab some friends, and we can all have a team game on our hands!" Ukon exclaims. "Oh, it's going to be so fun! And so is this guys' night! I can tell!"

The bell rings signalling the end of lunch, as you make your way to class. One last stretch of homeroom, with Takeshi struggling his way through explaining a math problem before the end of school for the day. Takeshi almost looks like a injured deer that's been put out of its misery by the time the final bell rings.

Now that classes are over, you've got a chance to go to another counselling session with Akihito-sensei. As you gather up your books, you are approached at your desk by Io, the same smirking grin on her face as always.

"Gooood afternoon, Kaz!" she smiles.

"Oh... hey, Io."

"So, a little birdie told me that you were having a super macho guys' night in tonight!" Io smiles. "I think it's very cute. Some good ol'fashioned male bonding. It's good for the soul. And I was just thinking that maybe you would like to have some snacks and drinks for the big night, and I'm more than willing to supply you with some! And you get that friendship discount! I'll sell you snacks and sodas for a much better price than any store in town!"

"Io, my scam alarm seems to be going off, do you wonder why that is?" you ask.

"Not a scam!" Io laughs. "I'm not going to cheat one of my friends! This is a legitimately good deal I'm giving you here, and tell you what... I'll give you the first two soda bottles free. You don't have to buy any more."

"You're in a surprisingly generous mood," you smirk. "I guess you're looking forward to the girls' night out?"

"Girls' night out?" Io asks. "What are you talking about?"

"You know..." you mutter, "Kiriko invited every girl in class to come into town and have a fun night out to celebrate Mayu's recovery."

"Oh... did she now?" Io mutters, her smirk fading.

"Wait... you honestly didn't know?" you ask. "Oh crap... Io, I really thought you would have been invited-"

"It's fine," Io interrupts, forcing a smile on her face. "I'm sure there was just... a mix-up. I'll... uhh, ask Kiriko about it now."

Io steps away from your desk, and doesn't walk towards Kiriko, but instead sprints past Kiriko and out the door, running down the hallway. Crap.

"Hey pal!" Chuichi exclaims, patting you on the back and breaking you attention away. "You ready?"

"Ready for what?" you ask.

"Well," Chuichi smirks, "I thought I'd go into town, pay a visit to my folks' place. I figured you might want to come with this time."

>Can't, I've got a counselling session to go to.

"Fair enough," Chuichi shrugs. "It wouldn't be that exciting anyway. My dad's out on a business trip and my mom works into the night, so the house would be empty anyway. I was just going to drop by to pick some stuff up."

You rise from your chair and sling your bag over your shoulder, making your way towards the door. As you do, you're stopped by Kiriko. "Kaz!" she exclaims. "What was wrong with Io just now? Did you say something rude to her."

"No, I just brought up the little trip into town you girls had planned," you explain. "I had no idea she wasn't invited!"

Kiriko sighs. "I wanted to invite her, trust me. But I was outvoted by the others. It doesn't feel right to invite everyone else and not her... I mean, if Sae gets to come, why can't she? I'm gonna feel real bummed about this... I'm gonna go apologise to her."

Kiriko begins to run off, before stopping in her tracks. "By the way, nice new chain. Where'd you get that?"

"Mayu got it, as a gift," you say.

"Oh, how sweet!" Kiriko smiles. "I don't know why she got you and gift and not the other way around, but it's sweet!"

"Mayu got you a gift?" Chuichi asks.

You shrug. "Yeah, it's not really a big deal though. Anyway, I gotta head to counselling."

You make your way towards Akihito's office and knock on the door. He answers it with a smile. "Ah, Kazuma. Good to see you're up for another session. Please, have a seat. Tell me about your day."

You sit down on the couch and unload about everything you've done since your last session. You find yourself focusing a lot on Ryoji's visit to you yesterday morning. Every time you mention his name, Akihito seems to hold himself back from saying something about the supposed Master Delinquent. All the while, Akihito makes notes on what you say.

"Okay Kazuma," Akihito mutters after you're finished telling him about your day. "For this session, I want to focus on one of your personal relationships. Namely, with your mother."

Your throat almost closes up as soon as she's mentioned.

"I understand you have a... complicated relationship with your mother," Akihito says. "And I'm aware she had a complicated relationship with your father."

"Nothing complicated about it," you mutter. "They hated each-other. Plain and simple."

"Well, that may be the case," Akihito sighs, fixing his glasses, "But I'm not asking you your mother's opinion on your father. I'm asking your opinion on your mother."

>I... can't explain it.

"Please, try your best to," Akihito replies.

"Well... like you said, it's complicated." You fold your arms. "I mean... I don't hate her, but I definitely don't hold any love for her either. We may not be on great terms, but... she's still my mother. She raised me well enough, I suppose... but I would have preferred to have been raised by my dad."

"I see... so you hold much more affection for your father than you do your mother," Akhito replies. "Kazuma... are you aware of the old adage of the grass always being greener on the other side?"

"Yes, why?"

"Well... I feel that you may have garnered much of your affection for your father simply because... he wasn't around as often. Your mother had her imperfection that you never saw from your father during his rare visits, so you've convinced yourself that your father was perfect in every way," he explains. "I feel you've allowed yourself to become wrapped up in hero worship."

"But my father is a hero," you snap. "He always was and he always will be."

"Yes, your father was a good man," Akihito sighs, "But that doesn't necessarily mean he was perfect. Kankuro was human, just like the rest of us."

"Stop saying was," you mutter. "He's still alive."

Akihito sighs, looking at his watch. "It seems I won't have time to address that for now... so I want you to do something for me between now and our next session."

"And what's that?"

"I want you to think positive thoughts about everyone in your life. I want you to draw up lists of every good thing about your friends and loved ones. Don't write a single negative, then bring it back to me, okay?"

"Sure."

Akihito smiles as he shakes your hand. "I'm glad to see you back, Kazuma. We'll cover more ground in our next session. For now, I have another student to speak to."

The door to Akihito's office swings open and in walks... Io? Her eyes are red, she was definitely crying earlier. She stares at you with wide-eyes, frozen in shock to be caught like this. You spare her the embarrassment and simply shake your head, giving her a pat on the shoulder as you walk by and exit the room. Man, you really wish those sessions were longer, but you suppose Akhito must have a lot on his plate. In a place like this, you're sure a ton of students are seeking his council, and most of them aren't willing to admit it.

Well, it's the late afternoon. The girls will be taking off for their big night out soon, so it'll be a while before Chuichi gets back from his parents' place and you guys can chill out in the common room. You pause, wondering how you're going to kill the next hour or two.

>Go for a long walk around the school grounds

A nice long walk would be a nice way to clear your head after a counselling session, really help you reflect on everything Akihito said to you. You toss on your headphones and get to walking at a steady pace. You exit the main school building and make your way out into the courtyard. You wander aimlessly around the courtyard, then you make your way to wandering aimlessly around the the back of the school building, then back to the courtyard. You develop a steady flow of walking along with absolutely nowhere to go. You completely clear your head and find yourself focusing simply on moving ahead.

Eventually though, you are met with a minor distraction, as the battery on your music player dies. Dammit... oh well, you suppose you can make do walking without musical accompaniment.

"WHOAAAAA, I'M WALKING ON SUNSHIIIIIINE!"

Oh god, what the hell was that horrible noise? Was that your headphones? Were they playing unbeknown to you, but were broken and only playing a screechy, distorted, horribly off-tune version of the song?

"WHYYYYYYY DO BIIIIIIIRDS SUDDENLY APPEEEEEEEAR!"

Yep, there's that noise again. You aren't going crazy. You spin around to face the source of this attack on your sense to a girl with blonde pigtails jogging behind you, getting closer and closer. "Oh, hey Kazuma!" she yells with a wave. "Getting some exercise in, I see! Always good for the heart!"

Oh yeah, you recognise this girl. Mai Tamuro, from your class. She's a fitness nut, and the organiser for group events among the class... though to date you've never found yourself in the same group as her. Hearing the deathly wails that she seems to think is singing, you're going to consider that a blessing.

"Well, I was just walking to pass the time," you shrug.

"No better way to pass the time than exercise!" Mai smiles, in a racing tone. "Like I said, good for the heart! You know what else is good for the heart? Singing!"

"Oh please no," you mutter.

"I sing every time I go for a jog!" Mai laughs. "The trick is to just let it all out, as loud as you can! Once you unleash that song from your heart, you can do anything! Come on Kazuma, give it a try!"

>Fine. Time to show this girl what actual singing sounds like.

You clear your throat, readying yourself. Mai stares at you expectantly as you open your mouth to sing.

"Whyyyy do birds. Suuudenly appear... every-time... you are near..."

Eh, not all that great. Your voice cracked more than a few times. You're hardly a fantastic singer.

"That was great!" Mai excitedly exclaims. "Your voice was perfect! You're a fantastic singer!"

You raise an eyebrow. You honestly weren't very good. She's just that bad. "Uhh... thanks, Mai. I guess."

"No, I mean it!" Mai smiles. "You could be a real star with a voice like that! It's almost as good as mine!"

"Uh-huh..." you mutter. "Whatever, I'm going back to the dorms. See you around, Mai."

"Oh, before you go," Mai jogs after you. "Do you want to join me for an exercise session?"

"Will you be singing during?" you ask.

"Of course!" Mai smiles. "I always sing when I'm exercising! In fact, I sing all the time!"

"Right. Then I'll think about it."

"What?!" Mai pouts. "But saying you'll think about it is just another way of saying no!"

"It sure is," you smirk. "See you around, Mai."

You make your way back to the dorms, and you enter the common room to see Anri sitting in one of the lounge chairs by himself, a book in his hand.

"Huh..." you mutter.

"What?" Anri asks.

"It's just... even though you said yes, I still didn't think you would show up."

"Well... I did," Anri mutters. "I'm here, ready to perform... 'guy stuff'. What... what does that entail exactly? Will... will you be very close, perhaps some roughhousing, some... shirtless wrestling?"

"Uhh... not unless that's what you want to do," you mutter, raising an eyebrow. "You're not used to hanging out with people, are you?"

"That obvious?" Anri sighs. "I... I don't know what I'm supposed to do tonight..."

>Probably just a spot of shirtless wrestling.

"W-what?" a wide-eyed Anri stares at you, before lifting his book to cover his reddened face. "D-don't you think that a little... gratuitous? I mean, we could cause a mess and I don't see why I would have to take my shirt off to be more functional with... you're joking, aren't you?"

You smirk. "Well, we'll see how the night goes."

It's not long before more of the guys start to join in, starting with Chuichi. "Alright, are we all ready to have a good time?"

"I don't think me and Anri are the two who respond well to hype-up questions," you reply. "But yeah, I guess we are."

"Good!" Chuichi smiles as he slams a stack of about four six-packs of sodas onto the table. "These were left in our room, along with a note for you, Kaz."

Chuichi hands you a small slip of paper with your name on it.Curious, you open it up to read the message inside.

Dear Kaz,
It seems the two of us have a little something in common. Here's something to get you started for the night, stop by my room if you're in need of any more. All completely free of charge, of course! Yours sincerely, Io xoxo

You note the fact that the word "sincerely" had previously been crossed out before being added again.

"So," Chuichi claps his hands together. "What's the first order of business?"

"S-shirtless wrestling?" Anri hesitantly asks, clearing his throat as he does.

"What?" Chuichi replies. "No! We're just going to chill out with sodas and have guy talk! I invited as many people as I could, so I'm hoping Kaz did the same."

Chuichi tosses you a soda can which you readily catch, though Anri has less luck, almost falling out of his chair catching the can tossed in his direction. Chuichi cracks his open and takes a sip. "Ah... that's real nice."

Gado enters the room shortly after. "Hey everyone," he mutters.

"Wow, Gado!" Chuichi exclaims. "I'm surprised you could tear yourself away from the dictator for five seconds."

"It wasn't easy, but I think she's in safe hands."

Gado sits down and it's not long before he is joined by Atasuke, Ukon and Makoto.

"Hmm..." Chuichi mutters.

"What's wrong?" you ask.

"Looks like two of my invites aren't coming," he sighs. "Ninsei was pretty straightforward in telling me to buzz off and leave him alone, but... I really hoped Taiyo would show up."

You shrug. "Who knows? Maybe he's running late."

"Maybe..."

Makoto refuses to take any soda, citing moral objections to soft drinks. You didn't know it was as possible to be as straight laced as that kid is, but somehow he manages.

You and the rest of the group find yourselves sitting around the common room, drinking sodas... and not really saying much, now that you think about it.

"So..." Chuichi drags on, "Who likes... sport-"

"I do, I do, I do!" Ukon smiles, raising his hand.

"I don't have much love for partaking," Atasuke remarks, "But I have a definitely love for spectating, watching fine, athletic men, writhing around, getting dirty..."

"Yeah..." Anri mutters, before taking a nervous drink of his soda.

"Kaz, help me out here," Chuichi whispers leaning into you. "What's a good ice-breaking question?"

Dammit... why does stuff like this always get left to you?

>Which girl has the best ass

"What?!" Anri and Makoto yell out in unison.

"Pretty simple question," you shrug. "Which girl has the best ass?"

"That is wildly inappropriate!" Makoto protests. "We can't talk about such... such vulgar things as-"

"I'm going to say Amaya," Gado interrupts.

"GAH!" Makoto yells covering his ears. "T-that's my sister!"

"I know," Gado remarks, taking a sip of soda. "I don't care. She's my pick."

"Have you no shame?" Makoto asks.

Gado shrugs. "Nah."

"Well, if I had to pick..." Chuichi thinks, "I'd have to say... Risa."

"Huh, I thought you would have said Mayu," you remark.

"Well... I think Mayu's the all-around best package," Chuichi explains. "But Risa's ass is something to behold. I know we've all been caught staring at it."

"O-oh yeah, a-absolutely..." Anri nervously laughs.

"I thinking Tami!" Ukon exclaims. "Risa's is nice and all, but Tami looks great when she bends in those shorts!"

"Risa looks great when she bends in her skirt," Chuichi fires back. "Trust me, it's Risa all the way."

"Makoto, who's your pick?" you ask him with a smirk, as he continues to cover his ears and rock back and forth. "Fine... just tell us who you think the prettiest girl in class is."

"Prettiest?" Makoto asks, uncovering his ears.

"Yeah, that's wholesome," you reply. "Come on, give us your pick."

Makoto sighs. "Well... I suppose if I had to pick someone... someone that I'd consider the prettiest... oh, this is so hard... I don't know. I... I guess Sae's a pretty girl, though I can't approve of her potty mouth."

"Sae?" Gado chuckles. "Kid, she'd eat you alive... and I wish I was speaking figuratively."

"Well, then... Kaiya."

"The psycho?" Gado asks.

"Hey, that's very rude!" Makoto pouts.

You shake your head, before turning to Anri. "So, who's your pick?"

"Oh, uhhh..." he mutters, clearing his throat. "You know, I don't want to do this. I think it's a bit, uhh... degrading. That's it."

You shrug. "Fair enough. And finally..." you sigh, as you look over to a grinning Atasuke. "This is going to take a while, isn't it?"

"Ohoho! Kazuma, my dear boy, you catch on fast!" Atasuke chuckles. "I've spent a very good portion of my time analysing the features of every boy and girl in class and ranking them accordingly. I've become such a master, I can tell someone's measurements just at a glance!"

Atasuke grins at Anri, who lets out a sigh. "Now! Allow me to get my graph!"

"There's a graph?!" you ask.

"Kazzy boy, there's always a graph. Ohoho!"

It takes almost a full thirty minutes before Atsuke is finished with his expert analysis of all of Class 1's rears. "... And in conclusion, you can see that the most perfect, delightful and downright scrumptious rear among the ladies is in fact that of Risa Aoki. However... overall best bottom in class, without a doubt, is an honour I have to bestow upon the one and only... Gado Nemoto."

"Hooray for me," Gado mutters, finishing his fourteenth can of soda.

"Okay... are we done?" you sigh.

"Not unless you wish to move onto breasts," Atasuke explains. "And I very much can!"

"Wow, so this is what you people talk about when I'm not around?" A male voice calls out from the hallway. The voice of a man you made sure not to invite. Tsuki Takudo.

He gives a slow, sarcastic clap as he enters the room. "Oh, well done. You worked out who has the best ass in the class. Fantastic! And you people criticise me and call me a pervert?"

"That's different," you mutter. "We were just having fun talking, we don't go around groping people."

"Are you still holding a grudge for that?" Tsuki rolls his eyes. "Come on, it was one time! And Kiriko absolutely wanted it! Can't you just let bygones be bygones and try to start anew?"

You rise from the couch and quickly lunge forward, punching Tsuki square in the jaw. He doesn't stagger or fall back. In fact, he barely even reacts to the blow.

"No chance in hell," you mutter. "What do you even want?"

Tsuki adjust his jaw and smirks as he addresses the room. "I just thought I should crash this little party you've got going here! You don't invite me, despite me being your friend, it really hurts my feelings."

"You're not my friend, and you never will be," you mutter.

"That's a shame, Kazuma, because I know so much about you," Tsuki smirks. "About your dad, about your mom... man you must feel like trash abandoning a wheelchair bound woman like that. But you know, like father, like son!"

Gado rises from his chair, an un-amused look on his face. "Tsuki, you have ten seconds to leave."

"Oh, look! It's the big protector, Gado! Let's trust him with all our cute little girls, right?" Tsuki laughs. "Does Kuin know about your life before the academy, Gado?"

"Excuse me?"

"Your life before the academy," Tsuki smirks. "I'm sure most of you can tell, Gado's actually a year or two older than the rest of the class. Why'd it take you so long to go to high-school, Gado? What were you doing?"

Gado continues to stare angrily as Tsuki continues to speak. "Stop lying to these people, Gado. You aren't fit to protect anyone. You're not a defender, you're a killer."

"Oh, how devilishly rude!" Atasuke gasps. "I must say, you're spoiling our evening!"

"Sounds like you're the next volunteer to have your secrets spoiled!" Tsuki laughs. "Do you really want me telling them your story?"

Atasuke hesitates, as Anri rises from his chair. "That's enough. I won't sit by here and listen to you insult-"

"Oh, looks like our little detective is getting jealous!" Tsuki laughs. "Fun fact, little Anri here knows all your secrets too. Oh, he's done his research, all right. Knows all about your past, Gado. It's why you're the prime suspect in his little murder case. Between you and me Anri... I think he did too. Man, it must be so frustrating being around these idiots, right? They still can't even tell the obvious about you. Must make you pretty mad-"

Gado tackles Tsuki to the ground, and begins to lay punches down upon him, the two struggle and grapple along the ground, spilling out into the hallway.

"We should stop this!" Makoto yells, shocked.

"Give it more time," Atasuke smirks, practically drooling over the two men rolling around on the floor.

"Y-yes... we should see how it plays out..." Anri mutters, unable to take his eyes off the chaos.

Eventually, Tsuki gets the upper hand, rolling atop and driving a knee into one of Gado's soft spots. "Do you see this, Gado?" Tsuki laughs. "This is what happens when I stop holding back! You can't mess with-"

"Tsuki. Stop."

You hear a voice, and turn your head to see a hooded blonde boy standing in the door-way. Taiyo Izumi. It's the first time you've ever heard him speak.

Tsuki starts to sweat, as he scrambles away from Gado, staring wide-eyed at Taiyo before letting out a nervous chuckle. "Haha... if it isn't my old friend, Taiyo. You know, me and him go way back..."

"Tsuki. Leave," Taiyo commands. "Now."

Tsuki hesitates, before running out the door.

"Wow... thanks Taiyo," you mutter. "How do... you and Tsuki know each-other?"

"Not important," Taiyo mutters, before calmly walking towards his room. "Goodnight."

"Ugh, what an ass..." Gado mutters, looking out the door where Tsuki just left.

"What a mess..." Makoto sighs.

Gado glares at Anri. "You know about my past?"

"Yes..." Anri mumbles.

"I see."

Gado makes his way towards his room, and slams the door shut loudly.

"I have to ask..." you mutter. "What was he saying about you? That we couldn't tell the obvious? What's so obvious?"

"You really don't know yet?" Anri mutters.

"Know what?" you ask.

"You really are an idiot..." Anri mutters, clenching his teeth tight as he storms toward his room. "You know what... screw it. Here you go, Kazuma. This is what you couldn't deduce with your amazing detective skills."

As he talks, Anri throws off his jacket, untuck his shirt and grabs the bottom, pulling it up high to reveal... okay, those are breasts. Those are definitely breasts. Anri... is a girl.

Crap. You feel like a colossal idiot right now. You feel absolutely mortified.

>Anri... you're not wearing a bra.

Anri's eyes widen, her entire body frozen as she slowly looks down to confirm if what you just said was true. Once she sees that you're not lying, she pulls her shirt down, her face the darkest shade of red you've ever seen. You're almost certain you can even see steam coming out of her ears. "I-I'm not w-wearing a... oh no... when you interrupted me while I was changing, I... I didn't put one on after! Oh noooo... oh n-n-n-no, this is not how I wanted this to go down, I-I-I..."

She's getting incredibly flustered as she begins to pace back and forth. "I... I... I'll talk to you tomorrow!" she yells, before retreating into her room. Well... that's just about the most bizarre experience of your life.

"So... Anri's a girl..." Chuichi mutters in shock.

"And she just flashed us..." Ukon adds.

"Ohohoh! I'm so glad I don't have to keep it hidden!" Atasuke laughs.

"You knew?" you ask.

"From the moment I first laid eyes on her," Atasuke smirks. "How could I not? That is a truly womanly figure!"

"Ohhh...." Makoto mumbles, a distressed frown on his face. "This night was awful. The swearing, the fighting... and now I've been exposed to a girl's bare breasts! Now I'm ruined for marriage!"

You shake your head as the others panic. You suppose this means the guys' night in has been called short. With a sigh, you step outside in order to get some fresh air and collect your thoughts, only to be met with a certain brown-haired girl sitting on the front step. She looks back at you with a smile, as she offers you a can of soda. "I take it you got my note?" Io smiles.

"Yeah," you mutter, taking the can of soda, before sitting on the step next to her.

"Sounded crazy in there," Io remarks. "Tsuki came running out like he'd seen a ghost."

"It did get pretty crazy towards the end. Did you know that Anri's-"

"A girl?" Io laughs. "Yeah, it was pretty obvious."

"Not to us, it wasn't."

"You guys can be so dense sometimes," Io giggles. "The girls should be back from their thing soon."

"Sorry, Io..." you mutter.

"It's fine," Io shrugs it off. "Kiriko made sure to apologise at least. I... I can forgive them for not wanting me around. Haven't exactly endeared myself have I?"

"Io..."

"I've kinda known I'm not welcome here for a good while now..." Io mutters. "I'm thinking of leaving."

Io stares at you, expectantly, but all you can do is shrug. "I don't know what to tell you."

"Yeah..." Io sighs. "You're going on a big mission, right?"

"With Class 3, yeah."

"Are you excited?" She asks.

"Very," you reply. "Something like this is... well, it's what I've been waiting for."

"It's your reason to stay..." Io smiles, as she rest her head against your shoulder and takes a sip of her soda. "Good luck tomorrow, Kaz. I hope it all goes well for you."

Purest boy a cute.

Thanks for running Booker. I missed most of the thread but it was still a fun ride to read through it all. I'm hoping we can warm up to Io after she stops being a shit since she does seem like she can be a nice girl. Did we thank her for the soda? We should do that. I also wouldn't have minded taking her up on her offer to visit her to get more sodas, maybe actually bought some from her since it seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

Taiyo might earn best boy title since he seems to be Tsuki's weakness. I hope Gado can hang out with is some more too since he seems like a really cool guy when he's not on guard duty. Hope we can learn his backstory too since it seems pretty serious. Atasuke was every bit of fun that I expected, glad he got invited. And we finally apologized to Anri, even though I didn't want to at first everything turned out fine. Wonder what's gonna happen now that she spilled her beans in front of everyone.

"Okay, there's no way he's coming along!"

You were excited to be brought along on an important mission alongside Class 3, the best of the best in Dark Gate Academy. How could you not be? You would be working among the elite, on a mission with the fate of the entire world at stake. It was hard not to feel that intense rush of adrenaline as you prepared yourself in the morning and made your way down to the school gates. But then, all that adrenaline, all that excitement was drained away the moment that tuft of white hair came into your field of view.

"Well, if it isn't my favourite kouhai!" Ryoji chuckles, folding his arms.

You groan. "Don't call me that. I'm not your kouhai and you sure as hell aren't my senpai."

"What's the matter?" Ryoji asks. "You're not a fan of being talked down to? Being talked to like you're stupid?"

"No, I'm not."

"You know, there's a way to stop that," Ryoji smirks. "Here's the secret... you stop being stupid, and just give me that magic stone of yours."

"I see you're still listening to advice from an untrustworthy demon," you mutter.

"And you're listening to your magic dream dad," Ryoji fires back.

"Ladies, ladies!" Taka announces. "You're both stupid! Now kid, I know you and the smaller kid don't get along, but I don't give a crap!"

"Well, I'm not going on any mission with him!" you yell.

"That's good," Maro replies. "Because Ryoji isn't coming along."

"Haha, that's right... wait, what?" Ryoji does a double-take, looking towards Maro.

"I never invited you to come along, Ryoji. You simply invited yourself," Maro mutters.

Ryoji shrugs. "Yeah... but I figured you'd need me."

"Ryoji, we have no idea what we're getting into with this mission," Maro explains. "Now, our three most valuable items are you, Alice, and that stone. If we were to bring all three of you on the one mission, then lose you all, humanity would have no hope. It's risky enough even bringing Kazuma along, but it's one were willing to take. Having you join the mission as well is just pushing it."

"Come on, Maro. Are you sure you don't need-"

"I'm sure," Maro interjects. "Don't try to argue against it. Just sit this one out. Spend some time with Saki, I'm sure you'll appreciate it."

Ryoji sighs. "Fine... but I'm coming along next time, okay?"

"Agreed."

"Looks like I'm more valuable than you," you smirk as Ryoji begins to walk off.

Ryoji laughs. "Huh, it actually sounds like you're more expendable than valuable," he remark, before placing a hand on your shoulder. "You should probably prove them wrong... little kouhai."

"Don't call me that."

"Kazumaaaa!" You hear Hanako's voice crying out as she rushes towards you with a wrapped gift in her hands, before tripping over her own feet and falling flat on her face. The gift goes soaring through the air, and you readily catch it, before helping Hanako back to her feet.

"What's this about?" you ask.

"W-well... as Class President, it's my duty to give you this gift from the class in honour of your big mission."

"Gift from the class, or a gift from you?" you ask.

"F-from the class!" a blushing Hanako protests. "I mean... I bought it, but it's still a gesture from all of us!"

"Sure..." you mutter, before opening it up.

"It's a new hilt for your sword!" Hanako smiles.

"Huh... thanks," you smile. "It's pretty nice."

Hanako smiles, and outstretches her arms.

"What's this?" you ask.

"I want to hug you but if a take a step closer I'll trip and hurt us both..." Hanako mumbles. Well, at least she's learning. You move in close and give Hanako a quick hug. "Good luck, Kazuma. And... and be careful!"

"Don't worry," you smile. "It won't be anything I can't handle."

"Yes it will," Maro chimes in. "Now come on, we don't have time to waste making friends."

"Oh, that's our Maro!" the white-haired girl in Class 3 swoons. You believe her name is Lilo. "Always so serious! You know, me and him are kind of a coupl-"

"Not on missions, we aren't," Maro interrupts as he begins to move and the group follows. "Now, our mission will see us in the small town of Jōryoku not far from here. Apparently, a breach between our reality and the Darkworld opened up there recently, and it's our job to investigate it, and hopefully find a way to close it."

"And rescue the townspeople, right?" you ask.

"If we can," Maro mutters. "But if we're being honest, it's likely too late for those townspeople already."

Not a nice thought, but you respect Maro for taking a realist approach. He's clearly not one to mince words. As you begin to walk the roads with the rest of the group, you find it hard not to feel like the odd one out. You're the freshman, while this crew have been working together for years. Maybe you should try talking to one of them on the way, try to become more familiar with the squad. Because so far, all you've been briefed on is their names.

You've got Maro, the serious leader in the cowboy hat. Lilo, the cheerful white-haired girl. Taka, the tall guy in armour with a permanent smirk. Kamiko, the creepy, expressionless girl. Shinji, the boy who looks very much like a prototypical soldier. And finally Yasutake, a blonde haired boy with a confident smirk. You could talk to any one of them, or just keep walking.

>Lilo

Most of this class look like a bunch of hardened soldiers, but this Lilo girl seems to look and act the most like a normal teenager. You'd probably have a better time approaching her and trying to strike up a conversation than any of the others. She's the least intimidating of the all... but you're sure that if she's in Class 3, she's bound to be pretty dangerous.

"Uhh... hey," you mutter, walking alongside Lilo.

Lilo looks out you, then sighs and pouts. "Oh, honey... I'm sorry. I'm already a taken woman."

"What?"

"I know sweetie... you likely worked up a lot of courage to come over here, only to be shot down. It hurts, I know."

"But I wasn't-"

"It's okay dear... you'll find a girl your own age, I know it!" Lilo smiles, as she places her arm around your shoulder in a comforting position.

"I was just trying to make conversation..."

Lilo giggles, and breaks away from you. "I know! I just love to tease! After all, your actual girlfriend is drop-dead gorgeous!"

"My actual what-now?" you ask.

"The blue-haired girl, with the gift?" Lilo asks. "She's not your girlfriend?"

"No, just a classmate," you explain.

"I see..." Lilo smirks. "Do you have a lot of beautiful girls in your class?"

"Yeah," you reply.

"And do they all give you gifts and hug you like that?"

"A few of them do," you mutter. "Why?"

Lilo giggles. "No reason. You know Kazuma, I feel you're the type of boy who a girl has to flash before he realises she's interested."

"A girl flashed me last night," you reply. "But I don't think she's interested in me."

Lilo burst into uncontrollable giggles.

"What's so funny?" you ask.

"Oooh, it's nothing..." Lilo smirks. "I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with you, Kazuma!"

>Well, why don't you tell me a little about yourself?

"Oh, this is my favourite subject!" Lilo smiles, clapping her hands together. "I love telling people about me!"

You feel you may have opened something you won't be able to close. "Okay... shoot."

"The name's Lilo Otani!" she exclaims, pointing to herself. "I'm seventeen years old, and I am the love and joy of class 3! Isn't that right, friends?"

The rest of the class groan in acknowledgement of her question.

"See?" Lilo smiles. "They won't admit it, but this lot need me around to keep spirits high! Everyone else is so dour and serious, and I'm here to inject a little life into us all! I'm also quite the romantic! I know every way to a man's heart, and I managed to snag myself the greatest man of all, isn't that right honey?"

Maro doesn't answer, quickening his pace.

"He likes to keep it quiet," Lilo laughs. "Never mentions it on mission, because he's a super-serious man, but it doesn't change the fact that he's all about the cuddles when we lie in bed that night!"

"Really?" you ask.

"Well... no, but he accepts it!" Lilo laughs.

"Right..." you sigh. "So, what else? You got a best friend in the class?"

"Oh, that's easy!" Lilo laughs. "My best friend is Nina!"

"Nina?" you ask. "There's no Nina here..."

"Oh..." Lilo's smile fades. "Well... she died, but that doesn't disqualify her from being my friend, does it?"

"I... I guess not," you shrug, picking up your pace. "But what about the living? Any friends there?"

"The whole class are my friends!" Lilo smiles. "But, if I had to choose a favourite..."

"Maro?" you ask.

"Wow, how did you know?" Lilo gasps. "Oh, just look at him. Isn't he just a dreamboat?"

"Uh-huh..." you mutter. "Are you aware of the term Hero Worship?" Pretty rich for you to ask something like that, but you can recognise when it crops up.

"Of course! It's when you worship a hero for their heroism! It only make sense! Maro's heroic, and so I worship him!"

"Right..." you sigh, as you continue to travel on the road.

"Okay," Maro holds up his hand, signalling for the class to stop. "I'm going to scout ahead to see what's going on in town, and then I'll report back to you all."

"Aren't you going to take someone with you?" Lilo asks. "It could be dangerous, you could need back-up!"

"You're right," Maro replies. "I'll take one other with me. The rest of you move around the perimeter of the town, as close as you can get while still maintaining a safe distance."

"I'll come with you," you state. "I mean, this stone could be pretty useful. I should bring it along instead of waiting around, right?"

"No, too dangerous," Shinji mutters. "You're just a kid, and we can't throw you into the deep end like that. Maro Sir, I'll be honoured to act as your back-up."

>Okay, I'll wait with the others. But don't take too long.

You and the rest of Class 3 wait by a small clearing of trees a little outside the town, as Maro and Shinji move on ahead, ready to scout out the area. Lilo bites her bottom lip as she watches Maro take off, his rifle slung over his shoulder. Taka reaches up and picks an apple from a low-hanging branch, and sits down at the base of the tree as he chows down on it. He takes a bite, savours the sweet taste for a moment, before spitting the chewed up chunks to the side.

"So, you think he's coming back this time?" Taka asks. "This just might be the last time he goes out..."

"Don't," Lilo crosses her arms with a pout. "Don't even suggest it, Taka. He'll be fine."

"Hey, I'm just thinking about the worst case!" Taka protests. "Come on, you know Maro. You know his motto."

"His motto?" you ask.

"Don't live as a coward. Die as a hero," Taka mutters. "Our cowboy pal's been hammering that into us ever since he took charge. Ol' Maro's never going to back down from a fight, and it's gonna cost him."

"Shut up," Lilo mutters, getting a little emotional.

"Personally, I think it's a lovely philosophy!" Kamiko exclaims. "We should all be grateful to go down bathed in the blood of our enemies. Oh, just thinking about it excites me!"

"Indeed!" Yasutake exclaims. "No greater honour than fighting until your last breath! That's the way of the warrior!"

"You all sound like a bunch of dumb kids!" Taka chuckles. "What good is honour or glory when you're dead? Call me a coward or a yellowbelly or whatever you want. At least I'll be alive."

"Alive and single," Lilo snarks, trying to get him to shut up.

"Oh no!" Taka rolls his eyes. "However will I go on without finding the love of my life? You know most people don't give a crap about romance as much as you do, right? If you stopped being the president of the Maro fanclub for five seconds, you'd probably be a little useful."

"I am useful!" Lilo huffs.

"Designing clothes doesn't make you useful," Taka fires back. "You're not a fighter. You're a groupie."

Lilo huffs and turns her back towards Taka, as you sit uncomfortably in silence. Eventually, Maro and Shinji comes walking up to the group.

"Sweetie, you're back!" Lilo exclaims, running towards Maro and wrapping her arms around him. Maro just continues to walk on with Lilo hanging off him.

"Here's the report," Maro explains. "As you can see from here, the sky above the town doesn't seem to have a tear in it any longer. However, there seems to be a strange magical aura surrounding the town. There's definitely a Darkworld presence."

"And what about the townspeople?" you ask.

"The town is empty," Shinji explains. "Not a person to be seen. Which can mean one of two things. One, it could mean that the demons have already moved on."

"And the second?" you ask.

"We could be walking into a trap," Maro concludes. "Whether it's a trap or not, we'll have to investigate the town. So just be prepared. The question is whether or not we investigate the streets or the buildings first."

>Let's check out the streets.

"Indeed," Maro replies. "We don't want to be trapped in a cramped building should we wind up ambush. A wide open area is for the best."

The rest of you ready your weapons and make your way into town. The streets of Jōryoku are completely and deathly silent. You walk along the main street of the town, the uneven cobblestones beneath your feet. If it weren't for the missing people, you wouldn't think anything was amiss. There's no signs of destruction, no hints of monsters or demons. Just a simple, quiet town.

As you wander further into town, you begin to see what Maro meant by the magical aura. An explainable feeling, but one that sends tingles running throughout your body. The same feeling you get any time you enter the Darkworld. Feeling it here is... jarring to say the least.

"Uhh... Kazuma?" Lilo mutter, pointing at your chest. "Your... thingie is glowing?"

You look down, and she's right. The power gem is glowing, giving off it's bright blue light while it hangs off your chest. Before you know it, your ears are being pierced by a high-pitched screeching sound. You wince and cover your ears, as does the rest of the group. You try to keep you focus on the streets, and from around the corner, you see a figure shambling. Followed by another. And another. Six lifeless, wandering creatures with humanoid figures round the corner and begin to make their way towards you.

"That's not good..." you mutter, before turning around to see another four walking corpses making their way up the other end of the street, trapping the group.

"Dammit..." Maro mutters. "I knew it was an ambush. They look weak. Get ready to fight them off."

You draw your sword from its hilt and clutch it tight in your hands. Time to kill some monsters. Okay... there's seven of you, and ten creatures overall. Even if they are weak, you're going to work hard to take them down.

You rush up to the nearest shambling creature and with a swing of the sword, you slice it down in rather quick fashion. That's one down already. Maro fires upon one of the four approaching from the rear of the group, though it seems the shrieking noise may have had an effect on his focus. He fires, and the bullet pierces the creature's shoulder, but doesn't slow its movement at all. You notice Kamiko pouting for some reason, and you quickly realise that it's because the creatures aren't expelling any blood. They aren't even filled with the black goo that most Darkworld creatures are. They're just like humans... only completely empty inside.

Lilo takes a shot with her crossbow at another one of the creatures in the back, the arrow lodging itself in the creatures gut, once again failing to slow it's progress.

"Come on, that's not how you do it!" Taka yells at the group's two marksmen, as he readies his greatsword, swinging it sideways toward the front pack of monsters, and easily cleaving the nearest one in two. "That's how you do it!"

Shinji charges towards the front as well, and with a serious look on his face swings at another in the pack, cutting it down handily. Yasutake joins him in slicing down yet another. Their numbers are lessening by the second.

As the creature that she failed to kill nears closer to a reloading Lilo, Kamiko hops in, skewering the husk with her rapier, before slicing upward, halving the upper body of the creature.

Maro isn't lucky enough to get the same kind of back-up, as one of the creatures swipes at him, knocking him back, landing flat his back on the hard cobblestone, briefly incapacitating him.

You survey your surroundings. After that sequence, there leaves two creatures in the front, and three in the back.

There's more creatures in the back now, so that's where you find yourself focusing your attention, especially with Maro downed towards the back. You rush up to the creature that knocked him down and swing with all your might, hitting with the force and form of a baseball bat as you slice through the creature. You still don't understand why it's completely empty inside, but you don't have time to think in the heat of battle.

Lilo rushes to Maro's aid on sheer instinct. "My love!" she cries out, as she hunkers down by him, readying her crossbow and firing upon the next shambling creature. The bolt hits it's target in the head of the creature, causing it to fall to its back.

Taka has the same idea as you, rushing to the back of the group, swinging upon the down creature with a mighty downward cleave finishing it off.

Shinji continues to attack the creatures in front, handily cutting down the one nearest him, and Yasutake does the same, finishing up the last of the creatures in the front. Kamiko rushes towards the last remaining creature, impaling it with her rapier, poking numerous holes in it until it finally collapses. That clears up that ambush.

Lilo helps Maro to his feet, as she wraps her arms around him. "Not now," Maro mutters, as he pulls her away. "We still have plenty of work to do."

"Never seen anything like these fellas before," Taka remarks, looking down on the corpses. Usually, Darkworld creatures fade away into a black goo when killed, but in this case the husks remain.

"It's strange..." you mutter. "They look like humans, but they're completely empty. Lifeless, no organs..."

"No blood!" Kamiko pouts.

"This feels real off..." you mutter.

"Indeed," Maro replies. "But now that we've handled that, we can continue the investigation. Everyone, spread out and search the area. Don't wander too far."

You nod, and begin to look around. Your stone is still glowing even after the battle ended, but at least it isn't giving off that shrieking noise anymore and attracting more monsters. You poke your head around an corner... only to see a pair of hands grabbing you and pulling you by your shirt and around the corner.

Before you know it, you're being held tight by a strong figure a few inches shorter than you. A hand clasped over your mouth, you feel the cold hard steel of a gun pressed against your temple.

"One word and I'll blow your brains out," a girl's voice whispers. "Who are you? Why are you here? You better give a damn good story, cause right now you're pretty damn suspicious."

Her grip over your mouth loosens, giving you a moment to speak.

"I... there's something strange going on in this town, and my group... we're students who have been sent to investigate it."

"Students?" the girl asks. "Where from?"

"Dark Gate Academy," you reply.

"What?" she asks, pressing the gun to your head. "That's not a place I've ever heard of."

"Sorry, I forgot... most on the outside know it as the Dakugeto Institute of Higher Education," you explain.

You slowly feel the gun being pulled away from your head. "Okay... I know that school," the girl sighs. She loosens her grip on you, as you turn around to face her. She... she's just a kid. No older than you. "I'll trust your story for now, but I've got my eye on you."

"Okay, not that you're not pointing a pistol to my head, do you mind telling me who you are?" you ask.

The girl hesitates, tapping her foot for a moment, before deciding to flash you a small badge. "I'm agent Akuro Yoi, I'm on a mission to investigate this town."

"Aren't you a little young to be a government agent?" you ask.

"There's no age limit on talent," Akuro explains. "I'm one of the top agents in my division."

"So, did you come here with a group?" you ask. "Pretty hard to believe you were sent here on your own."

"I did," she sighs. "The rest... didn't make it. They were torn apart by those... monsters. What's stranger is... it was like they couldn't even see them as the were being killed."

"Wait..." you mutter. "You can see the monsters?"

"Yeah," Akuro answers, raising an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't I? They're hardly inconspicuous."

Damn... she has no idea, but this girl is awakened to the Darkworld. Makes her a hell of a lot luckier than the rest of her team.

Before you can call out to your group, Akuro pulls you by the wrist into a nearby alleyway. "Come on, this way."

"What? Why?"

"We can't stop and chat there. The path you were taking is connected to so many others. You would have been putting a target on your back, just asking to get ambushed. Trust me, I know this town inside and out."

"And why is that?" you ask.

Akuro looks at you, before letting out a sigh. "Because... I'm from here. I'm a Jōryoku native. I was raised in the local orphanage, attended an elementary school the next town over because this town is freakin' empty. Here, come with me..."

You follow Akuro as she takes you to a stairwell in the alleyway. The two of you scale it as she hands you a pair of binoculars. "Here, look at that group."

You take the binoculars, seeing a group of 20 or so of the creatures gathered around a statue in the town square. "Damn, that's a lot of those husks..."

"That's not all..." Akuro mutters, a frown on her face. "You see, Jōryoku is a town where everyone knows everyone... see that husk over there? That's Sharaku Mitsuya, the owner of the town's most popular bar. They would have Karaoke every Friday night. It was the only cool thing this dump ever had. See that one over there? That's Masahiro Shirane, a rice farmer. He was always nice, but very touchy about kids being near his property. And over there? That's Dan and Martha Vernos. Two Americans who have lived in this town for years. They mostly kept to themselves but were the talk of the town. Martha was a vicious drunk and Dan enjoyed wearing women's clothing, at least according to the rumour."

"So... what you're getting at is that these husks..." you mutter. "They were the inhabitants of the town?"

Akuro shakes her head. "Yep... what in the hell could have made them like this? It's so freaky..."

"Why are they gathering that statue?" you ask.

"I don't know... but I can tell you one thing. That statue wasn't around when I lived here. We've got to get down there. You a fighter, Kazuma?"

"Yeah," you answer.

"That's good, because I'm not."

"I thought you were an agent?"

"Yes," Akuro answers, "But my expertise is in stealth. I have some marksmanship and hand-to-hand training, but I'm not much good against something like this. So... how are we going to get to that statue?"

"Okay, the two of us should try to get as close to that statue as possible without being spotted," you state. "But first, we should inform the rest of my group... uhh, wherever they are."

Akuro grabs her binoculars and scans the area. "Is that them?" she asks.

She points in a direction before handing you the binoculars. You look through, and... yep, that's them. It seems the rest of the group are on their way towards the town square anyway. "Good, we're all heading in the same direction," you mutter. "We can meet up with the rest there. They're all great fighters."

"Better than you?" Akuro asks.

"I wouldn't say that," you smirk. "But at least just as good. We make a living out of killing monsters like this."

"You do?" Akuro asks. "Exactly what kind of school do you go to?"

"A great one," you reply. "Come on, let's move."

The two of you make your way down the stairwell, and get moving towards the town square. Luckily for you, Akuro knows all of the town's nooks and cranies as well as she knows the back of her hand, allowing you to get through the town without being spotted by any of the husks. Though this advantage may have lead to your downfall... with a burst of over-confidence, you find yourself rushing ahead, an act that quickly costs you as you trip over a metal garbage can in the alley, causing a loud crashing noise. You pick yourself off the ground as Akuro clenches her fist and yells at you.

"You idiot! Don't you know the first thing about stealth?!"

She covers her mouth in shock, but it's too late. The words already escaped her mouth. If your incident with the garbage didn't tip them to your location, her yelling certainly did.

Sure enough, a pair of husks come shambling into the alleyway, attracted by the noise. You ready your katana as Akuro draws out a small pistol. "Well, this day just keeps getting better and better," Akuro sighs. Her hair is dishevelled, and there are bags of stress under her eyes. Not that you're surprised, something like this must take its toll on a regular person.

You charge forward with your sword, and handily cut through one of the husks. As you do, Akuro readies her gun and with wide, fearful eyes she lets fire, hitting the other husk with three picture perfect shots to the head, sending it collapsing to the ground. You let out a sigh of relief, having taken down the monsters so easily. You look back at Akuro for a show of approval, only to see her standing frozen in fear, her hands trembling as she keeps her finger on the trigger of her gun.

"You okay, agent?"

"I..." Akuro mumbles. "I never t-took a life before..."

You shake your head. "Well, you still haven't. That was a monster-"

"No, it wasn't!" Akuro yells. "That... that was Haruna Higashiyama. She owned the flower shop. She... she was beautiful, and kind and-"

"Dead," you interrupt. "Trust me, that thing you just killed wasn't the person you knew. It's just the shell of her body being traipsed around by a demon."

"A... a demon?" Akuro mutters, before throwing her gun to the ground and clutching her head, pulling at tufts of her hair. "What... what the hell is happening?! I can't take this! It's all so-"

"Listen to me," you say, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I'll explain everything in time. Just know that a lot more people are going to end up like this town if we don't complete this mission. So... let's get to that statue, fix whatever's going on here... and then you can have time to rest. You can come with us back to the academy. You'll be safe there... for a while."

"For a while?" she asks.

"Well, we get demon attacks like this pretty much every other night," you explain.

"Oh god... I'm going to be sick..." she mutters, before picking up the trash can in order to vomit inside. "Ugh... I know what you're thinking, right? She's just a dumb, scared kid! She's not cut out to be an agent! She doesn't belong in her position! I've heard it all before... but I guess it turns out the naysayers were right. Funny."

"Huh?" Akuro asks.

"Well... you just killed one of those things on your own," you reply. "That's a pretty good achievement. Think about it, how can they be right about you if you make it out of here? The sole survivor of the team they sent in? If we make it out of here, doesn't that mean you are cut out for being an agent? Come on... we can do this."

Akuro stares at you as she wipes her mouth. "You... you're right. Come on..."

"Kazuma."

"Kazuma. Let's go prove some bastards wrong."

The two of you step out of the alleyway and make your way toward the square. On the way, you bump into the rest of your group. "Kazuma," Maro mutters. "There you are, and I see you've brought someone along."

"A friend, I hope!" Lilo exclaims. "She is friendly, right? She won't bite?"

"No, I won't bite," Akuro replies. "I am agent Akuro Yoi, I was sent here to investigate the town."

"Aren't you a little young to-" Taka begins.

"Be an agent?" Akuro replies. "You're not the first to ask, and you sure as hell won't be the last. Let's focus on more important things, like the zombie horde that we're in the middle of, okay?"

"Indeed," Maro replies. "Let's talk about this more later. For now, let's focus on the mission."

"And we will talk about this later!" Taka assures Akuro. "I'm not letting a little runt like you talk back to me."

"Watch it, meathead. I could have you arrested."

"I'd like to see you-"

"Guys, stop!" you exclaim. "Let's just get to the statue."

The eight of you make your way into the town square, and from a safe distance, you can see what's happening. The husks appear to be praying to the statue, and as the take to their knees and clasp their hands together, their bones turn to dust, and they float through the air, seeping into the mouth of the statue.

"You said this wasn't around before the incident?" you ask.

"No, there's never been a statue there before," Akuro explains.

"I know why..." you mutter. "That's not a statue. It's a demon."

"What?!"

Sure enough, your suspicions are proven true, as the statue's eyes burst open, and with a loud creaking and rumbling sound that pierces your skull, it begins to rise to its feet. What's worse, is that it appears to be alerted to your presence. It places it hand out flat on the ground, and with a flash of light fashions a giant blunt blade made from the pavement below. That thing must have incredible reach on it. A swing from that could knock back all of you at once.

"Interesting..." Maro mutters. "It's like a guardian. In the Darkworld, every area has a guardian. Kill the guardian, and the incursion ends, returning us to our real world. I wonder if the same applies here..."

"Kill this thing and no more husks?" Taka smirks. "Yeah, I can do that."

The Statue Demon readies its massive weapon as the group steps out into the wide open area of the town square. The entire area is surrounded by simple shops, with a fountain placed in the middle next to the creature.

First things first, the marksmen of the group take position, finding cover and poking out to fire upon the Demon. Maro does a good job of keeping the golem under heavy fire with his rifle, firing shots at the face of the creature, which appears to be damaging it... or at the very least, hurting it. Lilo takes her shots as well, but when she fires with her crossbow, the bolt simply bounces off the creatures body. Seems she was aiming to lodge it in one of the joints and fell just a little short. Akuro manages to pick up the slack, though. Firing steadily upon the creature with her pistol, she and Maro manages to keep the thing annoyed well enough.

Taka charges at the statue demon with his greatsword, likely hoping to break the thing apart with one mighty bash of the sword. Unfortunately for him, he misses, and the demon easily swats him aside, sending him flying. Shinji is much more mindful of his defences, as he manages to avoid being swatted like a pesky fly by the creature, instead working to hack away and bash the creature hard with the brunt of his blade.

You, Kamiko and Yasutake charge the demon as well, as you make an effort to dodge and weave any potential attacks from the slow, lumbering beast, outmanoeuvring it and working with the other two to flank the creature. You slash at the monsters legs, as does Kamiko, while Yasutake tries to attack from behind. The golem sees it coming, however, and with surprising speed forces it's foot back, donkey-kicking Yasutake through a nearby shop window.

Some setbacks there, but you're making a good effort to hack away at the demon. While you try chipping away at it, the golem, raises it's stone sword high, and prepares to spin a full 360 degrees while swinging the massive blade. It was the reach to hit yourself, Kamiko, Shinji and Taka, and do some serious damage while it's at it.

You try to get out of the way, but the golem is surprisingly fast, and it swings it's stone blade with incredible fury. Kamiko manages to leap over the massive swing, but the boys aren't so lucky. Taka get hit with an extra swing that sends him flying once more. It's a good thing that gut looks like he can take a good beating, because that's what he's getting. Yourself and Shinji are also caught up in the swing, you being sent flinging across the fountain, while shinji lands firmly in the fountain pool. Dammit, you're certain you heard a crunch when you made contact with that stone blade... and you're also certain that crunching sound came from you. You lie face down on the hard floor, groaning and clutching your ribs.

"Kazuma, are you hurt?" Akuro calls out after you.

"J-just a little," you groan, your teeth gritted in pain.

"I think we did a little damage!" Lilo exclaims. "But we're going to need just a little more."

"Kazuma, can you walk?" Maro asks.

"Yeah, I can..." you mutter. "That hurt like hell, but I can still go."

"Same here," Taka mutters, rising to his feet. "I'm still active. Shinji might be taking a bit of a nap, but dammit I can still go!"

"Very well," Maro mutters. "We're going to need everyone we can for this next assault. Hopefully, we can finish it in one more burst."

First things first, you ready your Katana and charge toward the creature once more, doing your best to flank it with help from Kamiko. You narrowly avoid a swipe from the Statue Demon as you slash at the hind leg of the golem. You connect and tear at the creatures leg. Kamiko comes in and does the same to the other leg. You can see the cracks starting to form around the demon, it's definitely weakened by this point.

Taka attacks from the front, trying to distract the golem so that you and Kamiko can continue your assault, but he simply ends up eating a boot to the chest for his troubles, sending him flying far behind Maro and Lilo. The third time he's been knocked flying this fight, and you think this one is bound to keep Taka down for a good while.

Lilo readies her crossbow, carefully aiming at the demon's face. She fires the bolt, and it just about manages to connect with the face of the creature, cracking it. It lets out a load roar of pain as it begins staggering around.

Maro sees his chance and readies his rifle, hoping to fire on it's blade arm, fully breaking the joint and causing it to drop the stone sword. Unfortunately, the golem's writhing makes it difficult to aim, and his shot only grazes the arms of the golem, doing no damage. Maro curses under his breath, but it's then that he sees his saving grace... Akuro raising her pistol steady and firing upon the joint of the golem. Each shot lands perfectly and begin to wear away at the demon's sword arm, causing it to drop the blade with a massive thud as it lands, cracking the pavement.

"You're pretty good with that," Maro says to Akuro.

"Not really," Akuro mumbles humbly. "Just had a better angle."

Either way, the assault on the golem's weak points has allowed you another chance to assault the creature, and with Shinji and Yasutake rising to their feet and joining the fray, you may just have enough firepower to destroy the thing before it recovers.

Okay, the cracks have started to form in the golem, now it's time for you to deal the finishing blows. You swing hard with your sword at the hind leg of the Golem, and to your surprise, you end up breaking it at the knee, blowing it into rocky chunks that fly through the air. Kamiko goes for the other leg with her rapier, and manages to break through it as well with a forceful thrust. The Golem is now completely legless and only able to crawl along the ground.

Yasutake and Shinji come attacking from the front and find themselves cracking away at the torso of the golem with numerous repeated blows. A pair of attacks to the shoulder joints later, and the golem is missing its arms.

To finish it off comes the firing squad. Maro, Lilo and Akuro all burst from their cover and rain down with bullets and crossbow bolts to the face of the the golem. A faint crack from a shot by Lilo, which is further hammered away at with a hail of bullets from Akuro, then finally capped off by a powerful rifle shot from Maro which breaks through the skull of the Statue Demon. With the head gone, what remains of the golems body crumples and soon all the stones melts away, forming a ball of black goo that floats in the air... before shooting directly towards your glowing stone. The stone lights up, almost blinding you as it flashes brightly, and when the light dies down, your stone is no longer glowing, and you no longer sense a Darkworld presence within the town.

"What the hell was that?!" Akuro yells. "I swear to god, someone better explain what the hell is going on, because I'm losing my mind! Is this a nightmare? Is this a waking nightmare?! Somebody tell me."

"We're heading back to our school," Maro mutters. "It's not far from here. I'm sure you can contact... whoever you work for from there. We'll explain our situation on the way. You're lucky to be awakened."

"Awakened? What does that mean."

"I'll explain that first."

Taka rises to his feet, groggy. "Ugh... hey, what do you know? We killed it!"

"You didn't help much!" Lilo wags her finger at him.

"Hey, I still fought!" Taka remarks. "I could have just ran off, you know! Fled like a coward and left you to die!"

"You say that every mission," Shinji mutters as they all begin to move back to the academy.

On the road back, you are approached by Lilo. "So your magic thingie did a glowie thingie and that... sealed the portal? That's good, right?"

>Maybe? I don't know.

"Huh..." Lilo mutters. "I was hoping you might. I mean, we sealed it, right? That's good! Apocalypse averted! And yet... I don't feel like we've accomplished anything major."

"Where was the Archdemon?" Shinji asks.

"Huh?"

"According to The Stranger, that rift was caused by an Archdemon, right?" Shinji asks. "If that's the case... where was it? It clearly wasn't in the town, which means only one thing."

"It went back to the Darkworld and called it a day?" Lilo asks in a squeaky voice. "Please say it's that."

"It probably found a host and moved on," Shinji explained. "It's likely to be wandering around the country now, ready to open another rift wherever it goes. Not to mention the other Archdemons with this supposed ability, and that group that are after Kazuma's stone..."

"I think what Shinji is trying to say," Taka mutters, "Is that we weren't the front-lines fighting back against the Darkworld. We were just the clean-up duty. We're still screwed."

Hearing Taka's overwhelmingly positive words leaves a dark cloud hanging over the group as they make the long, harrowing journey back to the academy. Arriving at the school, you see Ryoji standing by the school gates accompanied by two of the Classmates. The small, super cheery girl and the pale sad looking guy. What an odd duo.

Ryoji welcomes you back. "Well, you're all here. So I'm guessing the mission was a success?"

"Not just all of us!" Lilo smiles, placing her hands on Akuro's shoulders. "We even brought an extra."

"Agent Akuro Koi," she introduces herself to Ryoji in a formal manner, shaking his hand. "I was investigating the events in the town and-HEY!"

Akuro is taken aback as Akemi walks up to her and slaps a sticker reading "Well-done!" across her chest. Akemi proceeds to make the rounds for the rest of you, stopping at you with empty hands. "Sorry, I only made enough stickers for all of you that left!" she laughs.

"I can live with that," you nod.

"I just wanted to congratulate you all on saving the town!" Akemi smiles. "Raiden here was raised in an orphanage there, and-"

"Raiden?" Akuro interrupts, her eyes widened.

Raiden steps forward, equally surprised to see the agent. "Akuro... it... it's really you. I haven't seen you in so long..."

"Oh, you know each other?!" An excited Akemi asks, bouncing up and down. "Are you old friends? Are old friends coming together?"

"Friends?" Akuro laughs. "Raiden here's my big brother!"

"What?!" Ryoji asks. "You have a sister?!"

"Estranged sister, yes."

"Yeah," Akuro nods. "They usually do... but I'm not interested in that."

"Me neither," Raiden mutters.

Akuro smirks, as she turns her attention to Akemi. "What I am interested in, however, is this little cutie right here!"

Akemi looks behind her shoulder before turning back to face Akuro. "Oh, that's me! I'm the little cutie! Yay!"

"Well, who else would it be?" Akuro smiles with a blush, walking up to Akemi and smooshing her cheeks together with her hands. "You are just... adorable! Bro, is she your girlfriend?"

"No," Raiden mutters.

"Can she be mine?" Akuro smirks.

"Also no," Raiden scowls, grabbing Akemi by the shoulders and pulling her way, in the same way a toddler would pull away its favourite toy.

"Oh, snap!" Akuro laughs. "But you know how much I love cute crap!"

"Akemi isn't crap," Raiden replies.

"But I am cute!" Akemi beams, crawling onto Raiden's back. "Isn't that right, Raiden?"

Raiden remains silent, as Akuro confidently folds her arms. "The rest of you go on ahead. I'm going to catch up with my big bro from here."

"Wow, Raiden! I didn't know you had a last name!" Akemi exclaims. "Yoi... Raiden Yoi... Yoi... Yoi..."

"Stop saying it like that," Raiden sighs. "And why wouldn't I have a last name?"

"I don't know! I just figured you didn't!"

As you walk on, Ryoji walks by your side. "So, that stone do anything for you on that mission?"

"For your information, it sealed the rift," you explain. "Looks like I was right."

"Well, it doesn't prove me wrong," Ryoji fires back. "It's a magic stone. I'm sure it has more than one function. But I'm sure you'll learn that with time, little-"

"Don't you dare call me-"

"Kouhai."

As you arrive back, you are greeted by a handful waiting outside the dorm, you assume for you. The members of the club, Gado, Chuichi and Hanako are all waiting outside.

As you approach, you are mobbed with a running hug from Kiriko. "Welcome back, little bro!" she yells, squeezing you tight. "You have no idea how worried I was for you. Glad to see the mission was a success."

"I'm glad too," you reply as you hug her back. "Trust me, it was a real tense one."

"You should tell us all about it! Come on inside!"

You step into the dormitory as you begin to stretch out. It's nice to have a welcome party, but damn are you exhausted. You're just about ready to call it a night, get a good rest, relax your- Another hug. This time from a brown haired girl in a pair of suspender, rushing from the common room into the hallway and not even hesitating to wrap her arms around you.

"Hey, look who's not dead!" Io jokes, as she squeezes you tight. "Oh... I'm happy I get to see you again!"

"Happy enough to stay?" you ask.

"I don't know if this is worth the stress I went through waiting for you," Io laughs. "Leaving is still on the table, I'm afraid."

"You'll find a reason to stick around, Io. I promise."

"Even if you had to... give me a reason?"

"Of course," you smile. "Whenever I work out what it'll take, I'll do it."

Io smiles. "Thanks, Kazuma... Oh, by the way, we've got a very special guest with us!"

"And who's that?" you ask.

"Well... imagine my surprise this afternoon when I had to move around most of the wares in my storeroom all because I certain roommate of mine wanted to actually stay here for the first time this year."

"Your roommate?" you ask. "Isn't that..."

You don't even have to finish your question, as you see the blonde hair, the braid. Those constantly wide, golden eyes. Sitting cross-legged on the common room sofa, with the biggest grin on her face.

"Hi!" Alice smiles and waves. "I want to live here now! That makes us friends, right?"

You laugh. Looks like Alice is coming back to class. Looking around, you find yourself... surrounded by friends. Even those you never fully thought of as friends are here for you. And to think, not long ago you thought Kiriko was the only one you could rely on. These days, you have plenty of allies.

Which is good, because if that sinking feeling in your stomach, that intense heaviness you've felt on your shoulders since sealing the rift is correct... you're going to need every ally you can get.

Some further character development in the first part of the thread, and some action in the second half. What were your favourite moments? How do you expect Anri to act now that the cat's out of the bag? What are your predictions for Akuro?

Thanks for running Booker.

>PQ
Dealing with Tsuki in the first half was pretty good, especially since we found out that Taiyo, for whatever reason, is apparently his rapey Kryptonite. The boss fight was cool as well, even though Maro jobbed most of the fight and Kamiko and Akuro were OP as fuck.

I fully expect Anri to be a stuttering mess the next time we see her.

And I want Akuro to mess with Raiden more, it's great.
>>
>>571972
>you're going to need every ally you can get.

>>Player Question
Looking forward to super awkward Anri being a cute. I imagine not much will change but maybe with some blushes here and there for a while till she calms her tits. Akuro will probably have some sweet interactions with Akemi and Raiden, which I imagine will lead Raiden to getting all cheery after enough time passes. She'll probably keep kicking ass in battle too, maybe she'll take the number one spot in Class 1.

>>571784

Akemi is the cutest. Akemi for best girl of Class 2.

>>572011
>PQ
Well for one, I really liked Io's struggles in this episode. As well as her burgeining friendship with Kaz. Really wanting them to be friends. The scenes appologizing to Anri and the dramatic reveal were great. Tsuki's absolute terror at Taiyo's presence has me interested as well.

The boss fight was solid. It felt fun controlling everyone's actions and I liked that the tension that was building throughout.

I expect Anri to try to keep professional with Kaz and the rest of the guys, but fail miserably. Which is also hilarious because I could quickly see her join in as one of the guys. So that will be fun.

Akuro is a welcome addition and adds some interesting depth to Raiden now. Not to mention a last name. I expect her and Akemi to be absolute hellions together if unsupervised. Which may be a bad thing for both Akuro and Raiden as Akemi is a whirlwind.

That said I can't help but wonder where that archdemon went...so there's that...
