/qst/ - Quests

>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a Iskander Steiner, a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

After receiving your certification, the military was able to provide you and Leah with food and lodging, a huge burden off of your shoulders. The two of you relaxed for a couple of days, waiting for word from higher up about Leah's situation. Luckily, it wasn't too long of a wait before they allowed Leah to get screened for a special position, and she was hired to accompany you.

"So I've been given a rank equal to that of Second Lieutenant." Leah says, reading the letter with the slightest hint of a smile on her face. "This kind of thing would never happen so easily if I was on my own. I guess this is just the kind of thing they do to accommodate State Alchemists."

The next day, the two of you are summoned for official business. You make your way to an office that you're sure belongs to a high ranking officer, and the two of you enter.

"Welcome, young State Alchemist!"

No sooner are you in the room than a giant of a man with a mustache and a single curly hair yells out a greeting as he erupts from his chair. He throws his coat off in a single motion, and flexes his huge muscles as he makes several poses.

"Iskander Steiner! It's a pleasure to make the acquaintance of you and your companion!" the man grasps your shoulder as he continues his boisterous introduction. "I am Colonel Alex Louis Armstrong, the Strongarm Alchemist! It's always wonderful to meet a new State Alchemist when they join our ranks! I do so hope you'll find your time in this organization rewarding, and I'll do everything in my power to try and make it so! Now, please have a seat! We have much to discuss!"

The man returns to his desk without letting you or Leah get a word in edgewise, though the two of you are too struck now to muster up a response, regardless. This man may take some getting used to as a superior officer. You and Leah both take seat across from the Colonel, then wait for him to put his coat back on and continue.

"Now before we begin, I'm perfectly willing to field any questions you may have about military life, or those specifically concerning the general affairs of State Alchemists." Armstrong goes on. "I'll tell you anything you need to know."

As eccentric as he is, he seems personable enough. If you can stand the personality quirks, it should be easy enough to get along with him.

"Sir, you're aware of Iskander, so I take it you know of his... condition?" Leah speaks up. "My name is Leah Crawford, I'm serving as Iskander's bodyguard... and interpreter."

"Yes, I was told. Quite a rare situation for a military recruit to be in, surely." Armstrong rubs his chin. "But I'm sure with you here, it will be of little detriment. It's good to meet you, Miss Crawford. Now, the floor is open. Either of you can ask anything you like before I get on to the specifics of your assignment."

Welcome to /qst/, Laze. The magic is off, and we have 'identifying codes', but it still works similarly enough to /tg/ for most people. On the bright side you have some fancy new features to work with now, so hooray!

As always, your mind is focused on the acquisition of knowledge. You make a motion to Leah like reading a book, and she catches on quickly.

"Sir, Iskander would like to know about research materials." she explains. "As a State Alchemist, he should have access to usually restricted notes."

"Ah, of course. You can go down to the National Central Library anytime and present your watch to be given access." Armstrong answers. "Of course, that's only one valuable source of information now available to you! I would recommend that you consult with your fellow State Alchemists whenever you can. There's always a certain something that you can get out of face to face interaction that you can't just read out of a book. A certain spark that ignites an alchemist's creativity! I can lead you to any of our colleagues with just a word, so let me know if you ever wish it."

With that question answered, Leah chips in.

"Sir." she begins. You can tell she looks a bit anxious. "What about... money? How much will we be paid?"

"You'll both be given salaries appropriate for your equivalent rank." the Colonel explains. "You can go down to payroll at the end of every week to go pick them up. There's also something else..."

Armstrong reaches into a drawer, and pulls out a piece of paper.

"After being made aware of your financial situation, it was allowed for you to be advanced half of your annual research grant. The rest will be deposited at the turn of the fiscal year as usual."

You grab the paper explaining as such, while Leah looks over your shoulder. The tow of you stop when you catch glimpse of the actual amount.

"What!" Leah nearly jumps out of her seat in astonishment. "This is more money than I've ever seen in my life! And this is only half?"

"State Alchemists are well taken care of, I assure you." the Colonel chuckles. "You should never have to worry about financial problems if you just don't waste too much of that. Now, on to your assignment. You won't actually be serving under me. At least, not for now. You're to be sent over to the East. However, It will be quite some days before you must report, so feel free to relax or do some research in the meantime. You can stay here for a while, or head on over and get settled in. I know of a few alchemists that way that would be good to learn from. The choice is ultimately up to you."

You spend a bit longer with the Colonel, as he fills you and Leah in on the workings of everything.

"Well, I know I won't be your commanding officer, but know that you can always come to me if you need anything. My door is always open."

As the Colonel has been talking, Leah has been looking at several pictures that adorn the walls.

You give a thankful bow to the Colonel, then join Leah in looking around the room. Armstrong has several statues and busts lining the walls, as well as portraits of who you assume are his family members. You can see a picture of him with all of them in front of a huge mansion. It seems he's from quite a wealthy family.

You see that Leah's eyes have stopped at one picture in particular. You take a look yourself to see the Colonel standing with a large group of soldiers. It seems ordinary enough, but one more look to Leah's face tells you that something is odd. She's focused on one particular point in the photo, which you trace. What you find is a single soldier in the group that you recognize. How could you forget.

It's Marc. Your best friend. The very man you tried to revive no more than a week ago.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxLLWW7Tt54&

"Ah, that's my company from back in Ishval." the Colonel says, coming up behind you. "Fine men, all of them. It was an honor to serve with each and every one of them. My only regret is that they not all of them came back. Despite my best efforts, I still lost a dozen men."

Armstrong notices the two of you eyeing Marc, then makes an understanding sigh.

"So the two of you knew Hanford, did you? Marc, that was his first name. He was a fine young man. Full of determination."

"He was our childhood friend." Leah explains, finally looking down from the photo. "He joined the military to escape poverty. Kind of like we're doing now."

You can see creases appear on the Colonel's face. "I'm sorry. A young man like that should have had his whole life ahead of him. But I wasn't able to protect him. Please forgive me."

You write out a note and give it to the Colonel, conveying your thanks to him for doing what he could to look after Marc. As he reads it, you motion to Leah that it's about time to leave.

"You two..." Armstrong begins, before throwing off his coat again. You can see him start to cry almost comical streams of tears. "I'm sure the two of you have been suffering this whole time, deliberating over whether or not to join the organization that your friend lost his life serving!"

The Colonel grabs you both in a huge bear hug. "And at your young age at that time, to be left without your strong older brother figure must have been nearly unbearable! And now you're even standing firm at the knowledge that it was under my charge that he lost his life! Such resolution! I'm truly moved!"

The two of you are eventually let go, but the Colonel's shouting doesn't stop. "I assure you that I will absolutely not fail again! I will make sure you lead the long and happy lives you deserve, no matter what! Trust that you will always have an ally here in me!"

After calming down, the Colonel sees you to the door.

"The State Alchemists here in Central are usually a bit older, and much less likely to share much of their work I find, though you could still try. However, I recommend heading out for East City. There are a couple of alchemists to see there, but it's also the most likely place you'll run into the Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric. He can use transmutation without a circle, just as I've heard you can. He could surely be worth speaking with. In any event, I wish you luck. Please come back any time."

As you and Leah leave HQ, Leah speaks up.

"So what now, Isk? Do we head for East City right now? Or do you want to stay here a while, maybe go to the library or something? It's up to you."

You decide that you want to use all your resources here before moving out, and that you should both hit the library and scout for some State Alchemists around Central just to see if you can get anything.

First thing's first, the library. When you get there, you show your watch, and are let in without incident.

"I've got something I need to look for." Leah tells you. "You'll just be around this area with the alchemy materials, right? I'll be back in a few minutes."

As Leah takes off, you scroll over the shelves and shelves of material, occasionally pulling out a book and skimming through it. Most of it is fairly basic stuff. Practically every one feels the need to start with a similar overview.

Alchemy is the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. It uses energy from the shifting of tectonic plates to rearrange elements as the wielder sees fit, so long as the knowledge is within his means. And of course, the Law of Equivalent Exchange. To create something, something of equal value must be given. The most basic of basics, and something you've known for a long time. And the reason why no one is to attempt human transmutation. Did you really know this so well as you thought? At any rate, you are well aware now.

Skimming through all the books, you find that there is actually precious little information that you didn't already know, and the things that are new to you are somehow not surprising. As if you were somehow already aware of them, despite never learning them. Strange. You take a few more advanced books to study more closely later, and meet up with Leah again. She's got a few books in a bag, and is holding one in her arm. It's titled: "Sign Language".

"It's a language created to help deaf people communicate." Leah explains. "I thought it might be worth trying out, at any rate. It might make communicating more convenient."

The two of you check out all your books, then head out. You looked up the nearest State Alchemist, and found some info on one Brigadier General Basque Grand. Despite the late hour, you plan to meet him. You and Leah walk through the dimly lit Central streets.

As you walk, you try to get Leah talking. You motion to her bag inquisitively.

"Oh these?" she asks. "They're just some cookbooks. I don't know how to fix a lot, so I took some of these so I can learn in my free time. I want to be able to cook well if..."

Leah's sentence gets quieter and quieter until she's mumbling so low, you can't make out what she's saying. She then stops talking entirely for a bit, so you motion again to the book she's holding, on sign language, trying your best to look enthusiastic. You write out a note saying that it was a very good idea to grab such a book.
"Right, I thought so too." Leah's voice picks back up. "We can't be waiting for you to write all the time, so with this you can communicate complex ideas a lot faster. It's sure to come in handy, I think."

You nod in agreement. The two of you walk a bit further in silence. You should be nearing the General's residence now. As you turn a corner, you immediately duck back behind the building you emerged from, avoiding cannon fire.

Apparently, the General is in a battle. But with whom? You carefully peek around the corner to see a dark skinned man with light hair jumping around, avoiding the General's attacks. From what you read, Basque Grand is an expert of combat. There should be no one that gives him too much trouble. As you expect, the attacker is quickly subdued, caught in a cage of the General's making.

"Hmph." you hear the General scoff. "That wasn't so tough."

You can hear the Generals
's footsteps approach the cage, but you can't see him from this angle. You're about to emerge, but you see a light. The light of transmutation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UJ6U_wwMbo&

"What!? No! How!?" you hear the muffled sound of the General's voice."

"Now you perish." the voice you assume belongs to the attacker says quietly, before you hear a sickening sound. You hear what you can only assume is the General's body drop to the ground moments after. After a few moments of silence, you hear more footsteps begin to walk away from you.

You can't just let this guy walk off after killing your superior officer. You need to at least find out what you can.

You and Leah start following the man, staying as quiet as possible. Easy enough for Leah, with her years of hunting experience, and you manage to live up to your moniker as well, making nary a sound. As you follow, you can hear the man mutter something.

"Oh almighty God, may you take the soul of the heretic I have just sent you and cleanse it, giving it everlasting salvation. May this work in cleansing the souls of heretics that pervert the world you have created make up for the sins of my brother, so his soul too can know your loving embrace."

That's pretty weird. You don't really know what this guy is going on about. It may be some kind of clue, however, so you commit it to memory. The man keeps walking for quite some time, with what seems like little direction. You can't really tell where this guy is headed. You try getting a better look at his features, but his sunglasses cover his eyes, and his jacket covers his body. Aside from his skin and hair, the only other clue you get is the huge scar in the shape of an X on his forehead.

Eventually, the man makes his way to an abandoned building and goes inside.

"Isk, we should stop here." Leah tugs on your shirt and whispers. "If we go in there, we'll be sitting ducks. We need to go tell someone."

You write out a note to Leah telling her to go get backup while you stand watch.

"Okay..." Leah responds, a bit nervous. "Be careful, okay? This guy seems really dangerous. Please run away if he confronts you, don't try to fight."

You reassure her, and she heads off. You take up position watching the building for any signs of movement. This guy won't be getting away on your watch. What seems like several minutes pass by uneventfully, and there seems to be no sign of the man.

"You. I've seen you before." you hear a voice from behind you and turn in panic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSs9H1ANmL4&

"That's right. You were using your heretic alchemy on a street corner to earn money. Disgusting." the scarred man stands in the doorway of a building directly behind you.

This doesn't seem possible. You saw him go in another building, and you don't think they're connected. Unless there's a tunnel underground or something. But there's no time to worry about that now.

"I wasn't sure if I was being followed or not." the man continues. "Thank you for staying to confirm my suspicions. One can never be too careful, it seems. Now, to rid the world of another heretic that would pervert the work of God."

The man reaches his arm out toward you. You don't know exactly what it does, but it killed General Basque Grand. You can't let it touch you. You jump back to avoid it.

"So you'll give me trouble too, will you? So be it."

The man gets ready to dive at you.

You promised you would run away if this guy confronted you. You still don't know what he can do, and he killed a master of alchemic combat like it was nothing. You have to run. There's no other choice.

You immediately turn in the direction Leah left, and take off running. As fast as your legs will carry you.

"Trying to escape my punishment?" the man calls.

Suddenly, you feel the ground shake under you, and parts of the street fly up at you. That man must have done this to disorient you. Is this alchemy? You don't have the luxury of turning back to investigate further. You just keep moving.

You try some tricks of your own, forming walls to block your route behind you, but the man destroys all the obstacles in his way with that right arm. It does slow him down enough for you to catch a glimpse, though. With that light, you're sure of it. He must be using alchemy.

Despite you best efforts, the scarred man doesn't lose track of you. He's way faster, to boot. You have to resort to desperate dodging to stay alive as you make whatever distance you can.

"It's over. Your punishment is nigh."

You turn just enough to see the shadow of the man's hand nearly touching the back of your head. This may be it.

Then you hear a shot ring out.

"Gah!"

The man recoils in pain, grabbing his hand.

"A sniper? They've become too wary. Damn!"

He ducks behind a building, and you can hear footsteps approach.

"Not even a State Alchemist, this isn't worth this much trouble. Boy, if I see you again, you will receive punishment! But for now, you have your life!"

You see the light of another transmutation, and the ground gives way. You walk over to see the man is gone, escaped underground.

In just a few moments, Leah is beside you, as well as a group of soldiers led by Colonel Armstrong.

"You're okay!" Leah grabs your hands as she looks you over more closely. "Good thing you listened to me, huh?"

"Iskander." the Colonel addresses you. "You seem to be uninjured. Thank goodness. I don't know what I would have done if you were hurt so soon after our meeting. I do wish you had followed my advice to head East, but as long as everything ended alright."

we must inform the Colonel that this man is deadly as evidenced by the fact he made short work of the general and that he's some sort of fanatic that hates alchemy but uses it as his weapon along with a complete description of him if they were unaware of him.

I think we should follow the Colonel's advice and head east next, not only will we need to get better at fighting and alchemy if we are to stand any chance. plus it will get the heat from scar off of us for now.

You mouth a thanks to Leah as you take back your hands and begin writing down what the scarred man had said. You give your notes to the Colonel, who reads them with quite a serious look on his face.

"Almighty God, heretic alchemists... There's no doubt in my mind now." Armstrong says. "That man was a follower of Ishvala. If you could see his eyes, they would no doubt be red. The Ishvalans are religious zealots, and bear great hatred for alchemy and those who practice it. And now one of them is hunting alchemists down."

You make another note and hand it to Leah, who asks the next question.

"Colonel, did you know about this man before?" she asks. "And what do you plan to do about him now?"

"I must confess." Armstrong responds. "I was aware. I had been assigned to find this man. He's killed ten State Alchemists now, as of General Basque Grand. But it was supposed to be kept confidential. My suggestion to head East was my way of getting you to safety without revealing the secret. But I suppose it's out now. As for what we'll do, we'll scout out for tunnels that connect to this one. It may be dangerous to follow him in, but we need to be ready when he comes out. We can't lose him here. You've given us a great chance. Thank you two. However, I still urge you to head East as soon as you can."

There's no doubt about what to do now. If you stay here, you'll be a target for the scarred man again. The fact that he didn't know you're a State Alchemist may be the only thing that kept you alive. Who knows the lengths he would have gone to if he knew.

You let the Colonel know that you'll be leaving tomorrow, then say your farewells. You and Leah head back to your room, now with separate beds, and collapse as soon as you reach them. It's incredibly late. You didn't realize just how exhausted you were until now.

"You really worry me, you know that Isk?" Leah tells you. "And you can't call for help anymore... We shouldn't split up anymore... I should stay with you... all the time..."

Leah goes quiet. She must have fallen asleep. You quickly follow suit.

After a restful night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, you and Leah head to Central Station. While the staff there recognize you, you're able to stop them from making a commotion by showing your watch. You pay for the previous tickets, and these ones, and they let you off the hook.

You and Leah find a seat on the train, and she opens up the book on sign language.

"We have some time to kill, so let's start figuring this out." Leah suggests. "You lost your voice, and I can only ever kind of get an idea of what you want to say. You can write out your thoughts too, but then it's like we're not actually conversing. I know how much you loved to talk. Every time you read something new or learned something from your teacher, you would drag Marc and I together and tell us all about it, every single tiny detail. And we loved to listen to you. I want to listen to you again. Maybe you can't speak, but that doesn't mean we should give up. With this... we can talk together again. I'm sure of it."

Leah is getting really fired up about this sign language thing. Her eyes are focused as she reads the book intently. You shouldn't start dragging your feet, either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLXTcIwrpRU&

You and Leah read about this new way to talk as the train heads East, to your new assignment. Whatever comes next will be totally new to you. You can't wait.

You and Leah spend your time on the train practicing sing language. This much time isn't enough to make all that much progress, but you're starting to get the hang of making so many gestures. Leah's going to be the one recognizing them, so she focuses more on learning what all the signs are. It will take some time, but with enough practice, the two of you should be able to converse smoothly again.

When you finally arrive at your destination, the two of you head straight for Eastern Command. You're directed to the office of one Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang. The plaque on the door having a piece of tape on it, on which Lieutenant Colonel is written. You head inside to find a few desks with soldiers at them doing work, and one large desk at the back. The man sitting at it turns his chair to face you as you enter.

"Welcome, Silent Alchemist. And you as well, Miss Crawford. I am your new commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang." the man emphasizes his rank. You can see the other soldiers in the room grinning. One looks like he's holding back a laugh, but then looks at the two of you with a raised eyebrow. Mustang continues. "However, I doubt it will be for too long. With my promotion, they should be transferring me to Central soon enough. But for the time being, I hope I can count on you. That said, you still have over a week before you're to be sent off for your first assignment. There wasn't actually much need for you to come out so soon. Anyway, as long as you're here, you might as well get settled in. You've got some time to kill."

You decide to try and help Leah make a good impression as your interpreter, and remember all the signs you read about. You can't really form any complex thoughts with them yet, but you're able to use what you can remember ask gesture to her "How does this work?" She catches on fairly quickly.

"Sir, Iskander wants to know how this assignment works." she tells Mustang. "Like, what exactly he'll be doing as a State Alchemist."

"Fair enough." I'm a State Alchemist myself, but I imagine our experiences will be quite different." the Lieutenant Colonel begins. "You likely won't be assigned to a combat position, we aren't using State Alchemists in war zones very much these days. You will most likely be sent out on assignments in places the military wants to get a feel for. They'll want you to act as a sort of liaison between the people and the military. They're mostly concerned about you keeping up appearances. Let me tell you, you've got it a lot easier these days than I did. This is all assuming you don't start making moves to rise up the ranks, that is. Then things could be quite different."

"You have all sort of experience with that, don't you, Sir?" a blond female soldier remarks from nearby. You can see Mustang grind his teeth a bit at the remark.

"Anyway, things will be easy enough." he continues. Just go where you're told, take a good look at things there, and try and make a good impression. This won't even take up all that much time, they leave you plenty to yourself intended for research. You should have no problems."

I think it's a general we want to know more about how things work, I for one would have loved to try seeing if we could try to skirt the edge of life and death by becoming the first medical alchemist.

Hear me out; here are some facts we know from truth.

>First we know that human transmutation is not doable as we didn't have a soul to bring back another soul.
>From the show we know that Ed was able to get Al back by giving up his arm to bind his soul into the armor.
>From there it could be somewhat logical to assume that the cost of a soul might be worth the amount of materials in the arm, but that brings in the connotations of how close the item in question is that is being sacrificed for the soul being brought back. Eh better not to think we can trade body parts for a soul at anyrate.
>We also know that once a soul is across the big gate they are pretty much gone for good, or at least unable to come back without some serious sacrifice.
>We also know that the materials needed to recreate a human body is able to be bought on human pocket change.

Gentlemen; what I propose is that we gather up those materials, carefully measure them out for the proper amount of damage that could be caused and become the combat medical doctor that can yank your ass from the brink of death.

Also what would be really cool would be the fact we'd know what to break down to essentially break, cripple, or whatever else we need to do in combat as well, we just do what Scar does and deconstruct a few things here or there to not be so bloody.

TLDR- We use alchemy to heal bodies, but not bring back souls. In the same vein we use alchemy to fuck people's shit up with a bit more class than Scar.

At the mention of research, you recall the Colonel's suggestion to meet with more State Alchemists. You pull out your watch and flash it to Leah, who remembers as well.

"Sir, concerning research, we were wondering if there were any other State Alchemists to meet with around here." Leah asks. "Iskander was hoping he could try and learn a bit from them. You're a State Alchemist as well Sir, but I'm sure you're already very busy."

"Indeed. I'm afraid I don't have the time or the inclination to offer any alchemy tips." Mustang replies. "However, you just may be in luck. Fullmetal is in town, and he happens to be at the residence of another local State Alchemist. He was interested in bioalchemy, so I sent him to Shou Tucker, the Sowing Life Alchemist. I'll give you directions to his house, in case you decide to swing by. If you just want to meet Fullmetal though, you can always just ask which room he's in at the military lodging. You two will be staying there, anyway."

As the Lieutenant Colonel hands you a note, his phone rings. "If you need anything else, come back later. I need to take this."

"Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang speaking." your CO says, picking up the phone. "Yes, that's right Hughes, I said Lieutenant Colonel. Don't give me that. I don't have time for this. You better not have called just to gush about your wife and kid. Oh, I'm sure."

You leave Mustang to his call, and leave with Leah. As you step out of the room, you find that one of the soldiers has followed you outside.

"I thought the name Crawford sounded familiar. Is that you, Leah? Man, you really shot up. You're as tall as me now. Hell, you'd be taller than me in heels. It's almost uncomfortable."

Leah looks at the man confused for a few moments, before addressing him. "Havoc? You're Jean?"

"You got it! That's me." Jean answers with a smile. "Man, I haven't seen you since you were a little girl. You and your pops used to swing by the store all the time. How is he these days?"

"He died quite some time ago." Leah says, her face quite stoic for someone addressing the death of a parent. "That would be the reason you stopped seeing me."

"Is that so. Well, I'm sorry to hear that." Jean responds. "He and my old man were good friends. I'll have to call some time and let him know. Anyway, you finally joined yourself, huh? Guess you just couldn't get away after all. I see you're still using his rifle. It's in the blood, huh?"

You can see the topic is making Leah a bit uncomfortable, and Havoc doesn't seem to be picking up on it. From the lack of tact, you imagine he's not a huge hit with the ladies.

In order to take some pressure off of Leah, you write out a note and show it to Havoc. You figure you can ask about him and what he does and that should get him to change subjects quickly.

"Oh, me?" he says, reading your note. "Yeah, I'm Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc. I support the Maj- the Lieutenant Colonel here. All sorts of operations, he really relies on me for a lot, you know. You're new around here, so don't be afraid to come to me if you need any help. I can point out all the good date spots, for instance."

Havoc keeps going on about himself for a while, but he's eventually interrupted.

"Havoc! You're not getting paid to socialize! You still have work to do!"

"Oh, man. Guess I lost track of time." Havoc scratches his head. "Anyway, you just hit me up anytime, alright?"

The man heads back into the office, while you and Leah leave. You two make sure to get your lodging in order before anything else.

"Well, we have plenty of time." Leah says, setting somethings aside her bed. "What do you want to do?"

You pull out the note Mustang gave you, and gesture a "Let's go" to Leah. The two of you head out. It's a bright sunny day, perfect for a walk. You've never been to East CIty, but the directions the Lieutenant Colonel gave you are easy to follow. You eventually reach a fairly large townhouse.

As you approach the fence, you can hear a ruckus. It sounds like some kids playing, but there are also some load banging sounds of some kind. You eventually see the source.

There's a short boy, a young girl, a large dog, and someone in a huge suit of armor running everywhere, and generally goofing around. Is that the Fullmetal Alchemist? You can't imagine there's much alchemy research going on here right now. Maybe you'll have better luck inside.

There are a few things wrong with this, and I am doing this from memory, so anyone fell free to correct me.

First, there are medical alchemists. Mey Chang, for example, though she uses a different form of alchemy called Alkahestry, or Doctor Marcoh.

The rule of human transmutation just comes into effect when you try to transmutate a soul, usually through the gate, though it may not be necessary, much like when Ed brought Al.

In healing, you are not transmutating a soul, you are transmutating flesh and bones. The hard part of healing is that the human body is stupidly complex, so while healing a cut is easy, healing the eyes of a blind man isn't, nor is recreating an arm from scratch.

Second, the cost of a soul isn't equal of that of a human arm. The cost of "attaching the departed, yet not fully gone soul of Al into an armor" was an arm because it was Ed who was doing the transmutation. The cost was, as was the loss of our voice, metaphysical, not physical. He lost his right arm because it was his brother, his metaphorical right arm.

Maybe, if Izumi had done the same for her baby, whe would have lost her heart, or some other metaphorical equivalent.

When it comes to souls, the Equivalent Exchange will cost exacly the necessary to cause you a trauma for life.

Unless, you know, you use a Philosopher Stone, but that is a whole other story altogether.

On the first I'd argue that they do it different in NotJapan/Persia place so it would be rather unique here. As for Doctor Marcoh he was more the kind of guy who you send in for stupidly complex surgery and the like, such as a heart bypass or something like that. I was just thinking that by learning all the ins and outs of a body we could learn to shape it as we need to so I'd agree with you on the whole transmuting flesh and bone thing. >Inb4 we turn into Victor Von Frankenstien.

I'd agree with you on the whole what the metaphorical costs are what is taken thing, made a lot of sense when you put it like that; though I was kinda wondering what the disticntion is for how far a soul can go before it's gone and we can't yank it back.

That reminds me of the movie where a bunch of scientists voluntarily put themselves into a death state to see how far they can do it and if they can recall anything that happens on the other side. Turned out it was their own nightmares come to life from past traumas that haunted them or something else.

You ignore the rowdy group for now, and head for the door, giving a firm knock once you reach it. In a few moments it opens, revealing a man in glasses. He looks absurdly tired, like he's been staying up for nights worrying, from the bags under his eyes. He does however, manage to muster a smile.

"Can I help you?" the man asks.

"This is the Silent Alchemist, Iskander Steiner." Leah begins. "He's a newly certified State Alchemist. He's unable to speak however, so I accompany him as his interpreter. My name is Leah Crawford. Iskander here is hoping that he can learn from his senior State Alchemist."

"I see. Just like the Elric brothers, then." the man's smile fades for a moment, but he puts it back up. "Well, that's fine. As long as you have some information to exchange, I'd be happy to share what I know. I'm Shou Tucker, the Sowing Life Alchemist. But I'm kind of busy, you know. I really hope you can make it worth my while, because I'm supposed to be hard at work studying for my annual re-certification. It's very important that I make a good showing this year."

You nod, and Tucker shows you in to a table. You motion to Leah to ask what he studies, and write out a query about the Elric brothers as well. You start by handing the paper to Tucker.

"Sorry about the mess in here, I'm not so good with housework. The Elrics?" Tucker reads your note. "Yes, Edward and Alphonse. They're out there playing with my daughter Nina and our dog Alexander right now, I'm sure you saw them. They were interested in the field of bioalchemy, so they were sent to me. I'd tell you for what reason, but I think it's probably a bit personal, so I don't want to say without their permission."

"Bioalchemy, you say?" Leah speaks up. "What is it exactly that you study, Mr. Tucker? How do you do research?"

Tucker gets up from his seat. "Follow me."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cCR6MBAaB8&

He leads you to a back room full of animals in cages, along with notes and equipment of all kinds scattered about. The animals are all making a ridiculous noise.

"I specialize in the field of chimeras. They call me an expert, but honestly, I haven't made all that much progress. Two years ago, I made a talking chimera, the first one ever. It was that that got me my certification. But I haven't been able to do it again. I'm close to losing my certification if I don't make a breakthrough soon. I can't let that happen."

Chimeras. You know not a lot of work is done in that field. The word reminds you of your encounter back in Dublith. Those people with strange features that were called chimeras. One of them mentioned the military. You still aren't quite sure what to make of that whole situation.

"I'd like it if you could provide me with some pertinent information, but I realize the odds are slim." Tucker sighs, as you all leave the room and return to the table.

You decide that if you have any information worth Tucker knowing, it's that. You write out a message and show Leah before giving it to Tucker.

"What is this...?" the man says, reading the message. "People calling themselves chimeras in Dublith? Surely you must be joking. Pulling my leg, right? It might have been funny if things weren't so dire right now, but I can't find it in me to laugh right now."

"It's no lie." Leah speaks up. "We saw their abilities for ourselves. A man that could sprout the horns of a bull with the strength to match, A woman that could contort her body like a snake, a man that could smell as well as any dog. They exist. Roa mentioned being on the run from the military. It may be hard to believe, but we think they may well have truly been chimeras."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HWefQC2xX4&

Tucker just looks at the paper without saying a word. His disposition get a whole lot darker.

"The military, you say..." the man mutters. "If what you're saying is true, then they've been playing me for a fool... Letting us suffer like this all this time... Laughing at me..."

Tucker crushes the note in his hand. "This better not be true... You better be either lying or mistaken... My wife... For no reason..."

Tucker starts to shake. With anger or what, you're not sure. He suddenly swings his arm and knocks over some dishes from the counter, which shatter on the floor.

"Tell me it's not true!" He shouts.

This is a way different reaction than you expected.

You're not sure why Tucker is so distraught. This could be the lead he needed. Though there is the concern of the military potentially hiding this. But you decide Tucker should know the truth. You give him a resolute nod, and Leah follows your lead.

"We have no doubt, Mr. Tucker." she says. "They were surely chimeras."

You write out a suggestion that he go check for himself, and write where you found them, the Devil's Nest. You give the note to Tucker, who is still shaking.

"See for myself..." he mutters, looking at the paper. "Yes... I have to. I'll find out the truth."

Tucker takes same time to calm down, taking a few deep breaths. "Thank you, Iskander. This may have been the most valuable information you could have given me. I intend to act on it at once."

Tucker walks over to the front door, and calls out.

"Nina, daddy got some good information! It could save his job!" he shouts. "Come on, we're going on a trip! Come inside to pack your things, we'll leave right away!"

"Yay!" the little girl, Nina, runs inside, with her dog following her. She hugs her father's leg when she reaches him. "I get to go on a trip with daddy!"

"That's right Nina, it can be a little vacation, too." Tucker pats his daughter's head. "You, me, and Alexander, we'll all go on a trip, and then daddy will get to learn everything he needs to know, too."

Nina goes further into the house to get her things, and you see the Elric brothers approach.

"So you got some good info, huh?" the short one asks. "Well, I hope it gets you that breakthrough you needed."

"It's a shame we couldn't play more." the one in armor says. His voice sounds surprisingly young. "When you get back, we'll come visit again."

"Yes, please do. I'm sure Nina would love to see you again." Tucker wishes the brothers farewell, and they head off.

You write out one last note to Tucker, wishing him luck and telling him to be careful.

"Thank you, and don't worry." Tucker replies after reading. "I'll be sure that Nina isn't put into any danger. I can't afford to have someone look after her here the whole time, but for a day in Dublith should be perfectly doable."

You wave goodbye, and leave with Leah. You want to catch up to the Elrics while you can. After a short stint of running, they turn around to meet you as you approach.

"Hmm. You two were talking to Tucker, right?" the short one notes. "Can we help you?"

"Wait, you wouldn't happen to be a State Alchemist as well, would you?" the armored one asks.

You decide to make the effort to be polite. This is your colleague, after all. You give a slight bow, then hold out your hand. Leah does the same, then you exchange a round of handshakes with the brothers.

"This is Iskander Steiner, the Silent Alchemist. He's a newly certified State Alchemist." Leah begins the introduction. "He's unable to speak, so he's accompanied by me, Leah Crawford. I'm his interpreter."

The two of you look to the armored brother expectantly.

"I take it you're the Fullmetal Alchemist?" Leah asks. "I can see where you got the name. Iskander was hoping that you could both share knowledge together."

You wait for a response, but the only one you get comes from the short brother.

"Actually, I'm the Fullmetal Alchemist. Edward Elric." Edward sighs. Like he's been through this a thousand times before. "This is my younger brother Alphonse. Pleased to meet you."

"Younger..." Leah looks from Alphonse to Edward. "I'm sorry. I was expecting the taller one to be the Fullmetal Alchemist. My mistake."

"Are you calling me short, beanpole lady?" Fullmetal suddenly erupts. His brother grabs him as he flails about. "I don't care how much milk you drank!"

You and Leah are taken aback. Not really behavior you expected from a State Alchemist. But thinking back, nearly every single one you've met has been eccentric or overly emotional in some way. Maybe that's actually the norm.

"Sorry about this." Alphonse apologizes. We get this a lot. It's not your fault. Let's head back to the military lodging. I'm sure brother will have calmed down by then."

The four of you head off on your way, Al holding his brother back and trying to calm him down. The Elric Brothers. An interesting duo, to be sure. Who knows what you might be able to learn from them.

For what its worth this is my first quest and im haveing a great time. I look forward to these.

>>
>>579306
Laze you might want to step away so much from the FMA universe for the quest (or at least the storyline), people know the plot and know what to expect and as such actively metagame, knowing which direction the quest will go in also really kills a quest for a lot of people because it's no longer a CYOA it's following a prefabricated script, people also like a sense of progress of some kind; we've decided already on being a character that seeks knowledge but we don't know what we know IC currently, nor do we know if we're progressing alchemically, currently (this is just me) it feels like we're just generic character A dropped in the FMA universe and that doesn't make for a compelling quest
>>
>>579498
I'm trying to build up to the reveal of what exactly it is that's different. I'm intentionally trying to make you guys complacent and think that you know all what to expect already.

Rest assured that things will certainly not be following the same exact script as the series.

As for progress, this is certainly a lot harder to do in FMA than in something like Naruto. There aren't really "powerlevels" or anything, and the characters mostly just get generally more competent with experience rather than getting any kind of power-up. It's not really so easily represented with stats, so I decided against trying it.

>>
>>579519
Yeah I have no doubt that you wouldn't follow the plot to the letter, but its something that could drive off a new player, and you've got to remember /qst/ has a lot smaller a population than /tg/ and a higher density of quests, driving off new players can kill a quest (also your Naruto quest was really good but again you stuck to the story line of Naruto pretty heavily, something you might want to avoid with this quest at least in my opinion), also I can understand the difficulty with progress in a universe like FMA, however I'd suggest studying and research allows for specific modes of alchemy to be achieved (i.e. we could research air transmutation in order to pull liquid nitrogen out of the air etc.) and that only a fairly limited number of transmutations fall under the general category that we can use from the get go, and practice could improve the amount of a substance we can "alchemise" at a given time (i.e. only able transmute a single pillar of rock, but with training we might be able to transmute several in a single go etc.)
