You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you in a shipo el shipo fight with an Abyssal Heavy Cruiser, and not a normal cruiser, either. You suspect she's one of those Princess-level types, which makes things a whole lot more interesting.

Interesting in the way that you were basically completely outmatched against her in a straight up fight and the both of you knew it. You were just trying to buy Haida enough time to intercept that Very Important Asset the Heavy Cruiser Princess was protecting.

Fortunately, a fully armed flight of F-35s were coming in to provide support, but you were conflicted. Have them hit the Heavy Cruiser to eliminate her as a threat, or send them against the Asset's remaining escorts to make things easier for Haida...?

"Hit the cruiser, hit the cruiser!" You call out to the F-35's high above, all but invisible in the night sky.

"Roger that, take cover!" The pilot warns.

And suddenly, your radar pings a warning to you. New aerial contacts coming in and coming in FAST. You immediately put yourself in reverse, firing your 5 inch cannons as fast as they could, not really to do any damage, but to at least distract the Heavy Cruiser from the real attack coming in .

The Heavy Cruiser just smugly shrugs off the attacks as they explode harmlessly off her armored hull, and you feel a warm feeling inside when her smug smile melts off her face, finally realizing what was coming.

A volley of Harpoon missiles rain down, their rocket engines screeching and blazing in the night before slamming down on the Heavy Cruiser. Of course, quite a few are off target. Abyssals are small targets, after all, but enough score solid hits. You could see pieces of hull and carapace get shorn off from the blast. Three sets of screams pierce the night as the Heavy Cruiser and her tails reel from the attack, flaming oilblood surging from rents and gashes cut into their skin.

Now's your chance!

You decide to take this chance to go in for the kill. There was no better opportunity than now, with her in shock from the pain of the missiles' impact as well as the fact that she was still on fire, flesh bubbling and metal melting from the heat. You kick your engines back into forward power and close in, arming your torpedoes and pulling your bat from its sling. Your guns weren't any good, but with these weapons...

You unleash a volley of torpedoes, the large metal projectiles ejecting from their tubes and plowing down into the water with loud splashes, speeding away. Even while burning and in pain, the Heavy Cruiser to her credit sees the incoming torpedo attack, and she in fact speeds FORWARD. You watch your torpedoes pass by her or bounce off her feet uselessly. Bitch drove right into the inside of their arming range!

However, that stunt also brought her well into your melee range, and you swing your bat with all your might right at the Heavy Cruiser's skull. One of her tails, now basically a burning skull at this point, immediately swings around and takes the hit instead, shielding its master. The tail shatters like glass, raining charred bone fragments and flaming gore on you and your opponent. The Heavy Cruiser looks at the death of its tail with a mixture of horror and rage, and her second tail raises up, hissing like a snake and lunges forward, grabbing your bat in its maw while the Heavy Cruiser lunges at you.

You give your bat a yank, but the tail's grip on it is just too tight. Though you manage to jar it loose just a bit, the Heavy Cruiser is already upon you, lunging at you and knocking you backwards, her charred and singed hands burning into your throat as she pushes your head back and under the water. Even as a shipgirl, you're not designed to be underwater, and your lungs burn as your Rig starts to flood, shutting down vital systems one by one. Your vision blurs as you can see the Heavy Cruiser's smug smile beginning to return, now that she's regained the upper hand.

Your first instinct was to try and fight her off, to break her iron grip on you, but you also remember that those F-35s should still be in the area. Even if they didn't have any more missiles...

You give a sharp kick to Heavy Cruiser's slit open gun, causing the Abyssal to shriek and recoil in pain. Its grip and your neck loosens just enough for you to pick your head back up above the surface. You take in a deep breath and scream in your radio.

"WILD CARDS, WILD CARDS! DO YOU READ!?"

"We read you, Hoel. What do you need us to do?" Wild Card One responds, her voice tinged with concern.

"Ya got guns on, right? I need a gunrun to get this bitch off me!" You cough as you swallow a mouthful of oil slicked seawater by accident.

"But-"

"JUST DO IT!" You yell as the Heavy Cruiser regains her composure and shoves your head back down under the water.

Hardly a few seconds later, you see fire lance down from the sky as 25mm cannon rounds drill into the Heavy Cruiser's back. The Abyssal gives an inhuman scream as the bullets don't just impact, but straight THROUGH her weakened hull, shredding her body to bloody ribbons like wet paper. The tail likewise shrieks as its shorn off from the main body, twitching and writhing as it lets go of your bat. You immediately reach out one of your arms to grab the bat and swing into the side of the Heavy Cruiser's head, but it's not really necessary, considering there wasn't much left of her body, just tatters of gore and oil slowly sinking below the waves.

"You... can still be beautiful..." The Heavy Cruiser gasps, her head bobbing up and down on the surface like a beachball, defiantly staying up so the Heavy Cruiser could have on last parting word. "Such a shame..."

"I already am." You say coldly as you raise your arm mounted cannon and press it against the Abyssal's forehead. Up this close, and with the damage the Heavy Cruiser suffered, one shot is all it takes.

And that's when you reel over in pain. In a brief panic, you switch on your searchlight and illuminate yourself, and then you see why. It looked like that when those 25mm rounds penetrated the Heavy Cruiser, they kept on going right into you. Fortunately, they apparently lost enough momentum punching through the Heavy Cruiser that none of the shells penetrated your hull, but the series of bruises all across your chest and abdomen show that you still clearly suffered damage. You could feel your movements much more sluggish, which also wasn't helped by the fact that parts of your Rig were still flooded, your faerie crew desperately trying to pump all the water out.

"Haida, how are you doing?" You wheeze.

"Can't get close enough!" Haida reports, cannon fire booming in the background. "These escorts REALLY don't want me getting close!"

"I'm coming in to back you up." You cough out some blood that had started pooling up in your throat. "I should be there in a couple minutes!"

"Are you sure you're okay?" Haida asks with concern. She was a pretty sharp one, after all.

"I can still fight, if that's what you mean." You sidestep the question quickly as you start spooling up your engines. Even if they can't be quenched like your old boilers, soaked engines were still never ideal.

"All right, we just need an opening, and one of us can get in close." Haida explains.

"Got it." You nod as you finally start getting up to speed. "You got any damage?"

"Just a few grazing hits, but nothing serious." Haida responds sharply, dropping more 4 inch shells downrange at the Abyssal destroyers escorting the escaping target, shrouded under a black camouflage cloak. "We'll go once you catch up."

"Yeah, well don't get used to it." You grin back as your turrets swivel into position. "I'm a pretty selfish destroyer."

"Oh, I know." Haida smiles as she speeds forward, injecting as much power into her boilers as possible. The Abyssal destroyers immediately turn to head her off.

You fire all of your guns, and even manage to punch a few shells right into one of the destroyers, instantly knocking it out of the fight. However, these particular destroyers, they were pretty fucking smart. They don't fall for your ploy and focus solely on Haida. One of them fires its cannons from its toothy maw, drilling a shell right into Haida's right knee, causing her to buckle and fall face first into water. Smelling the figurative blood in the water, the remaining two destroyers close in on the now vulnerable Haida, their eyes glinting with bloodlust.

Haida, to her own credit, is already scrambling to her feet, gun and knife in hand, but there was definitely no way she was going to dodge or outrun those destroyers now. Her eyes meet yours, and she seemingly can read the concern on your face.

"GO!" She yells right as the destroyers leap on her.

You bite you lip and continue on. Haida was right, you needed to prioritize the mission, no matter how despicable the thought of leaving a fellow destroyer behind was. The last thing you see is the Abyssal destroyers descending on Haida before you lose track in the darkness. Your radar is no help either, all of them so close and twisted together that even your modern set couldn't tell them apart from each other.

Regardless, you speed forward and catch up with the fleeing Abyssal, yanking the black cloak off.

The Abyssal's appearance as... unexpected. She looked to be some freakish combination of Anna and Portland, with a large set of headphones and a set of glasses, smudged by soot and ash. She was clearly damaged, no doubt from when Atlas when up in flames, and she was clearly in tears, though you suspected that it wasn't in pain.

"All my materials..." The Abyssal whimpers. "All gone..."

She keeps repeating variations of those phrases. Just completely catatonic.

Meanwhile Haida was still back there, no doubt fighting for her life as you watched this Abyssal whimper and sniffle in front of you.

"Damnit." You grunt as you press your cannon against the Abyssal's knees and fire, practically severing her legs. The Abyssal finally breaks out of its catatonia and shrieks in pain, but you're long since past the point of caring about its welfare. Let the Captain sort it out from here. You immediately swing around to help Haida, coldly ignoring the Abyssal's cries.

You speed in, fearing the worst. Things have gone quiet now, and your radar is only reading one singular active contact on the water, which signified the skirmish was long over. You speed in, gun armed and ready. You decide to take the risk and shine your searchlight.

And there you see Haida, drenched in blood and oil, hair matted and dirty. Her wreck is simply a mess, with it looking like the Abyssals had literally bitten out entire chunks of it, and her clothes were completely torn up, her modesty only being protected by a thick layer of said blood and oil.

And despite all this Haida actually manages a cheeky grin.

"Not bad for a destroyer, huh?" She wheezes.

"You cheeky bitch." You chuckle as you shrug off your baseball jersey and drape it around Haida's shoulders. Your own clothes were pretty torn and ripped, but at least they were still actually there.

"Don't tell Ontario, though." Haida mumbles. "She'd kill me if she found out I took a stupid risk like that."

"You're right, it was stupid." You grimace, causing Haida to droop a bit, right before you pat her blood matted hair. "But totally awesome anyways. Any destroyer that's willing to take odds like that is okay in my book!"

"That's... nice to hear." Haida mumbles sheepishly. "Just uh... don't tell the other destroyers, okay? Especially Kidd and the Fletchers. I don't want them getting the wrong idea or anything..."

"Lips sealed." You nod as you see the running lights of a fleet of helicopters coming in. If they were running lights on like that, that meant the battle must be effectively over. In the distance, you could see Atlas was still burning like a torch, none of the combined American and British fleet making any effort to fight the flames. There was nothing left to salvage, anyways.

Quickly enough, the unimaginatively named "Supply Base Princess" was whisked away by a specialized disposal crew, who of course didn't say who they were or where they came from. Meanwhile, cleanup crews came in to collect or properly dispose of any Abyssal corpses they could find. Couldn't leave anything for them to salvage, after all.

All of the shipgirls that had participated in the battle, including you, were recalled to the Tarawa for immediate repairs. With the intensity of the battle, it wasn't a surprise pretty much all of you were damaged in some way or another.

Those things that Heavy Cruiser said about Woel... you needed to know. Was she telling the truth or was she just trying to mess with your head? You knew that Woel volunteered to help crew the cargo ships carrying relief supplies to Japan which meant she'd be vulnerable.

Damnit, you never should have let her go!

You begin to fall back in the line a bit, making sure that you're the last one to land. As the rest of assembled shipgirls begin to stroll off to the repair dock, talking and chatting about their achievements during the battle, you quietly slink off to a side room and pull out the secure cell phone Anna had given you. You quickly dial in Woel's number.

"We're sorry, the number you are trying to reach has been disconnected or is unavailable!" An automated voice says with artificial cheer. "Please try again at another time!"

But that's.... that's impossible! Anna assured you that your phones were linked by a secure satellite. There shouldn't be any way the signal couldn't get through!

Unless, unless...

You dial again, but get the same automated response.

You dial again, but get the same automated response.

You dial again, but get the same automated response...

You are WOEL, and currently, you were just sitting your bed, enjoying the motion of the waves, even if they were mostly absorbed by the mass of the cargo ship you were serving on. Still it was good to be back on the water. You... you really missed it.

Your ship, the Avelia, was one of the many commercial cargo ships pressed into shipping relief supplies to Japan. It was very glorious work, but it was necessary work, and you were glad you were part of it.

In terms of being part of the crew though, you were naturally at the lowest rank, being a new hire. In fact, most of the crew was just thrown together from various places and backgrounds. With the great fear of Abyssal attacks, filling shipping positions wasn't very easy. Only those desperate for the money the government promised really took up the call. Still, you didn't mind, as long as nobody paid too much attention to you. After all, you just a simple-

You were a proud Deck Officer's Assistant! Which... sounded more glamorous than it actually was. Basically, you pretty much did whatever the Deck Officer or Captain told you to do. Whether it be to stand watch, or grab them coffee. Pretty simple but menial work.

However, what you were generally used for was to be something of a night watchgirl. Basically you patrolled the deck of the ship, keeping an eye out for any and all potential threats. Mainly Abyssals.

As if that would do any good, though. The Avelia was completely unarmed, so if Abyssals showed up, chances are you were all pretty fucked anyways.

Well, at least that's what the escorts were for. Both the US Navy and Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force were contributing ships and shipgirls to protect relief convoys. In addition to the two conventional destroyers sailing alongside your six ship convoy, there were also a squadron of Japanese shipgirls accompanying the convoy as well.

"Cole! It's your watch!" The intercom buzzes. You sigh and slide out of your bed, not tired at all. You put on your coat and make sure you pocket your special phone, your direct line to your twin Hoel. She hasn't called for a while, though. You kinda hope she's okay.

Nevertheless, you shuffle out of your small quarters and up to the deck of the ship. You then give a wave to bridge to signify you were ready. You see a blurry silhouette wave back. The watchman you're relieving is quick to meet you, palming off his flashlight, binoculars, and flare gun to you before disappearing belowdecks. Meanwhile, the sky began to darken as the sun set. This was the most dangerous of times, as the Abyssals tended to attack at night. You appropriate your gear and then lazily lean on the rail, looking over the side. Down below, you could see the Japanese destroyers attached to your convoy sailing past...

You eye the four destroyers as they pass. If you remember the old enemy recognition patterns that you -you mean- Hoel was taught correctly, then they were all Akatsuki-class destroyers. Other than that, you don't really recognize any of the individual shipgirls. You're pretty sure that Hoel had never encountered them during the War.

However, that doesn't stop all four destroyers to wave cheerfully at you as they pass. Before you even know it, you wave back at them.

Shit! You were supposed to be keeping a low profile!

The four little destroyers then continue on their patrol route, but you see one of them... the white haired one, fall back a bit to let the Avelia catch up and just gives you a dull stare.

Did... did she suspect?

"Don't be silly!" You laugh nervously. A bit TOO nervously has beads of sweat begin to form on youre forehead. Goddamn, this destroyer was gonna blow your cover!

However, the small white haired destroyer then spins around. She then speeds off to catch up with the rest of her squadron. You briefly wonder what spooked her so you raise your head up to see a massive storm rolling in, with you only noticing thanks too all of the lightning illuminating the area.

But it was what was inside the storm that froze your heart. They were coming.

The Abyssals were coming.
