>Information

This quest takes place long before the events of The Last Airbender. Long before Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, or Yangchen. You play as a young Earthbender from a small village in one of the many Kingdoms scattered across the main continent. As a powerful villain strives to dominate the world, you will be forced to make choices that can stop it, aid it, or have no effect whatsoever.

>Rules

After each update I make, there will be a voting period of ten minutes. Once ten minutes have passed, whatever option has the most support will be the winner.

Write-ins are accepted, but only when specified If you see a write-in option, suggest whatever you like. If not, choose from the options I have provided.

Sometimes, rolls will be required. I will assign them, and they will operate under a d100 system. You will have three chances, and if one of the rolls succeeds, you pass. There are no crits, but I do take into account how much you succeed or fail by.

I reserve the right to veto certain write-ins, but will try to avoid doing so.

I hope you all have fun

Night has fallen by the time you and Lantana emerge from the tunnels. You've traded darkness for more darkness, but at least now the stars and the moon in the sky above provide a bit of illumination.

You don't recognize this part of the woods, which is probably a good sign. That probably means that you've traveled a pretty good distance, so hopefully the army won't be joining you any time soon.

Lantana staggers over to a tree, leaning against it and letting out an exhausted yawn. She looks ready to just collapse at any moment, and you honestly aren't feeling too much better. Tunneling through the ground was quite taxing, and the fighting you both did prior didn't help matters.

"Need sleep..." the girl groans, tiredly looking around for a proper place to plop down and get some rest.

The ground here is relatively smooth, so you suppose this could work as a sleeping place. Or, maybe you could try climbing into a tree and resting high up for the night.

>A. Just plop down and sleep

>B. Climb a tree

It looks like you'll be sleeping on the ground tonight, but you really don't feel like staying out in the open. So, you use what little strength you have left to pull up two rectangular walls of Earth at diagonal angles, having them meet in a point at the top, and forming a tent.

Lantana glances over at your project, and decides to make one for herself. Once she's set up her own shelter, she yawns loudly and stumbles toward it.

"Goodnight," she tells you sleepily.

Going into your tent, you find out just how exhausted you are, passing out the second you lie down on the ground. Your body feels a little sore the next morning, but you do feel refreshed, having thankfully been able to sleep through the night.

As you climb out of your tent, you find that Lantana's already awake, and in the process of creating a fire pit between your two tents.

"Good morning," she says without looking at you as she places some more sticks into the pit.

The fire she's preparing to start makes you nervous. Maybe it's just paranoia, but you can't shake the worry that the smoke will draw the army right to you. With that in mind, you ask if she's actually found anything to cook.

"Not yet," she answers. "But, there's always plenty to eat in the forest."

Since she hasn't even found anything to cook yet, you politely suggest not making the fire, and instead say that the two of you should probably just forage for a little while.

"Alright," Lantana says, standing up. "Let's see if we can find something to eat."

The two of you set off into the forest. managing to locate some nuts and berries after a relatively short search. Returning to your camp, the two of you have a seat and eat your meager gatherings, preparing for the day ahead.

"So, if we're going to the Northern Air Temple, we're going to have to do a lot of climbing," Lantana tells you before popping a berry in her mouth. "It's high up in the mountains, and we'll have to pass through several to reach it."

>A. That shouldn't be too hard for a couple of Earthbenders

>B. Will the army be going there?

"That shouldn't be too hard for a couple of Earthbenders," you tell her optimistically.

"I hope not, and if we're lucky, the army will be moving to the South," Lantana tells you. "We're just West of the West lake, so if they want to reach the Eastern Part of the continent, they'll either have to find a way to get the whole army across the lake,or go South through the Great Divide."

Neither of those options sound very good for your enemies. You somehow doubt they have a whole lot of boats, so crossing the river will be tricky, but you've heard the Great Divide is infested with monsters, so going that way wouldn't make things easy, either.

Of course, now that you think about it, reaching the Air Temple is going to be a challenge. You have no idea what's in the mountains. Somehow, you doubt there's very many villages, and there's no telling what kind of creatures might live there.

"We should find a way to get some supplies before we go into the mountains," you suggest.

"Unless you brought some money, I don't know how we're going to do that," Lantana tells you. "I'd really rather not steal from anybody."

Stealing doesn't really sit right with you, either. Although, you briefly consider stealing from the army. You wouldn't have a very guilty conscience from that, but after all the pains you've gone through to escape them, you don't much feel like leading them right back to you.

A less dangerous solution soon comes to mind. There has to be villages around somewhere, either in the immediate area, or near the mountain range. Where there's villages, there's usually opportunity for work, especially with the men of the region called out to war. You suggest finding a village and looking for work to Lantana, who seems to accept that as a good idea.

"But first, I need to take a bath," she tells you.

The two of you spotted a stream nearby while you were looking for food. It could work as a place to wash up, and Lantana really looks like she could use a cleaning. Then again, you're sure you don't look very good right now yourself.

"Let's get washed up, then find a village," Lantana says, turning and starting toward the stream.

After just a few steps, she suddenly stops, turning and looking at you with a blank expression.

"You know, I just realized I never asked you your name," she comments.

"I'm Sei Fong," you tell the girl.

"Nice to meet you, Sei Fong," she says pleasantly.

The two of you make your way down to the stream, and you head some distance away from her without her having to tell you, giving both of you some privacy as you clean yourselves up in the water.

It feels nice to clean yourself off, and as you remove the dirty from your hair and body, you spot some fish swimming by.

Those nuts and berries you ate should be more than enough to keep you going for a little while, but you feel your stomach growl as you watch the fish swim all around you. A little extra food couldn't hurt.

The first thing you try to do is flat-out grab one by the tail, but when you try that, it simply speeds up and swims out of reach. With that having failed, you try to use your Earthbending to raise the ground at the bottom of the stream, and strand some fish on dry land. But, most swim off as you try to do that, and the few that get caught simply flop off.

Sighing, you put the floor of the stream back where it belongs and get out of the river. Not having a change of clothes with you, you decided not to wash them just yet. Waiting around for them to dry could take too long. So, once you're out of the stream, you put them back on.

You're all finished, but aren't sure that walking over to Lantana to see if she's finished is a wise idea. If she's still bathing, you might find yourself on the run for the second time in two days.

So, you instead shout for the girl, asking her if she's done yet. You get your answer after a few seconds of silence, but it's not from her. At least, you're almost positive it isn't from her.

What you hear is a low growling coming from somewhere nearby. Turning your attention toward the noise, you see something approaching the tree line, moving on four legs.

As an Earthbender, your instinct is to stand your ground and wait for whatever this is to show itself. Any kind of creature could be lurking around these forests, from something relatively docile like a Gemsbok bull, to more aggressive creatures like a Boar-q-pine or a Tigerdillo. Putting one foot back, you ready yourself to defend yourself with your bending, but when you see what emerges from the trees, you suddenly feel far less confident about your ability to protect yourself from it.

It walks on all fours, specifically, two relatively short and skinny legs, and two massive, powerful arms that end in hands which are distinctly human-like. Its body is covered in white fur, save a tuft of brown fur on its back. Its face is rather frightening, a black color that contrasts heavily with the rest of its body, with large, green eyes that you find it hard to look at, a large mouth with two tusks raising upward, and a pair of large horns jutting from the top of its head. Two floppy ears hang down from its head, but that does little to detract from its frightening demeanor.

You've heard of this creature before, but you didn't think there were any so close to your village. This is a Goat Gorilla, and, from what you've heard, these creatures are incredibly dangerous.

The beast lets out a roar at you, rearing up onto its hind legs and raising its massive fists to smash you.

Not sure how to fight this creature, you instead opt for a temporary retreat, rising yourself into the air on a pillar of rock that puts you high above the creature, as well as the nearby trees.

First growling in confusion, then roaring in anger, the creature leaps onto the pillar and begins to climb it, making it nearly halfway before beginning to slide back down. Stopping the fall with its back legs, the creature begins to push itself back up, prompting you to create a second pillar and leap over to it.

The Gorilla Goat follows, leaping over to the second pillar and beginning to climb. You hop back to the first, and it does the same, getting closer and closer to you each time.

The creature is getting closer, but you aren't going to let it catch you. Planting your feet firmly on top of your pillar, you brace yourself and pull the other one over, causing it to slam into the one you're standing on top of.

The pillar beneath you shakes, and large chunks begin to fall from it, including the spot the creature was holding onto. With a roar, it falls and lands on the ground below as your pillar continues to tremble, nearly making you lose your balance.

Before you can join the Goat Gorilla on the ground below, you leap from the collapsing pillar, landing on the one which is leading against it, and sliding safely down to the ground below before the two pillars finally collapse, raining debris down onto the fallen creature, burying it and likely crushing it to death at the same time.

"Sei!" you hear Lantana shout as she comes running toward you.

Her hair is dripping wet, and her clothes look a bit damp. It looks like she heard the commotion, threw her clothes on, and ran right over. Despite the mussy and still torn appearance of her clothing, she's actually pretty when she's cleaned up a bit, and it takes you a second to remember that she probably thinks you're under attack or something.

"What happened?" she asks anxiously as she stops right in front of you.

Answering by telling her that you've found something to trade for supplies, you ask her to help you bend some of the stone away. With the two of you working together, it doesn't take long, and soon, you uncover the Goat Gorilla; crushed, dirty, and very much dead.

"Wow, nice work," Lantana compliments before approaching the fallen creature.

She kneels beside it and looks it over. "Yeah, we should be able to get money for this. The fur can make clothes and blankets, there's enough meat to feed a lot of people; the horns and bones can be used for weapons and stuff like that."

She stands back up. "Do you think we can carry it?"

That ling looked really heavy, so carrying it might be a problem.

A sled should be fairly simple for the two of you to make, so you suggest to Lantana that the two of you bend the ground beneath the creature into a sled-like block, and use Earthbending to move it through the forest.

Again, working together, the two of you raise a block of stone beneath the creature, doing your best to make it both large enough to move the body, but also small enough to avoid getting stuck between trees or anything like that.

"There's a river East from here," Lantana tells you. "There's bound to be some fishing villages on its edge. We'll have to cross it and head North to get to the Air Temple."

Agreeing to head East, you nonetheless find yourself wondering how exactly Lantana knows where you are. You don't think she has many supplies, but you ask anyway if she has a map.

"No, I've just been asking for directions in villagers I come across," she answers as the two of you continue to travel. "I didn't have the money to buy a map, but in most places I could find someone who was willing to give directions."

Reaching the river takes most of the day, but it's mostly an easy trip. You hear the sounds of animals in the distance on several occasions, and spot moving figures just on the edge of your field of vision, but showing off some Earthbending is enough to get whatever's following you to back off a bit, leaving you and Lantana to make a safe journey.

The Avatar was right; you do find a village sitting at the river's edge, one significantly larger than the one you call home.

It must be quite a sight for the villagers, seeing two teenagers lugging a dead Goat Gorilla around on a block of rock. People give you a wide berth as you move it through the town, until a girl around your age finally emerges from one of the houses.

"What in the world is that?" she demands.

She has long, brown hair that goes down past her shoulders, and darker skin than most people you know. Her eyes are blue, and her form is a lithe one. She wears all green, and doesn't seem to be carrying any sort of weapon, only having a small canteen at her hip.

"Something that big's worth a lot of money," the girl tells you. "What are you hoping to buy, a small house?"

"Maps, blankets, sleeping bags, packs, clothes, that sort of thing," Lantana answers.

"Well, we do have those here," the girl assures you both. "Let me see if old man Gundro wants to buy it from you."

The girl turns and walks off toward a house deeper in the village, leaving you and Lantana standing along together as the villagers stare at you.

"We're getting a bit of a stony reception here," you comment to Lantana, putting extra emphasis on the rock pun.

She laughs, the fidgeting stopping and the tension leaving her body as she does so. It's more than anyone else ever laughs at your puns, and it's only been like, a day since she had something to laugh at. Maybe she just enjoys corny jokes.

"Well, it's not like we can just rock up expecting they've heard of us through the olivine, chalk this one up to our cold flow, I guess," you continue, drawing further laughter from her. "Must be a marble to have two Earthbenders here."

At this point, Lantana is hunched over, her entire body shaking with laughs. When the girl returns from the nearby building, she looks at your friend with confusion.

"Is she okay?" the girl asks you.

Lantana's laughter slows, and she stands back up, wiping some tears from her eyes. "I'm fine. So, did you talk to the old man?"

"Yeah," the girl nods. "He'll be right out."

A few moments later, you see an elderly looking fellow with a balding head, hunched posture, and wrinkled face approach. Despite his appearance, he's pretty fast for his age, and it doesn't take him long to reach you.

"Hello there," the man greets with a pleasant tone that instantly puts you at ease. "Mauya says you have something you might be willing to sell to me."

"Sei here took down this Goat Gorilla," Lantana explains, gesturing to the creature in question.

The old man walks over to the body, examining it closely.

"These creatures aren't easy to kill," he tells the two of you. "Are you sure you didn't just find its body in the woods?"

"You're that good of a bender?" Mauya asks.

"He's pretty good," Lantana vouches for you. "And he can be pretty tricky."

That's pretty true, you have won most of your battles due to out-thinking your opponents. Not a bad way to win, really.

"Well done," the old man compliments, turning away from the creature.

"So, do you want to buy it?" you ask the man.

"Sure," he agrees. "I think I can give you a gold piece for it."

"A whole gold piece?" Lantana asks, obviously not expecting that much.

The old man chuckles. "We don't get many of these creatures around here. They're pretty valuable. And besides, the two of you look like you could use it."

"What do you mean?" you find yourself asking.

"Torn clothes, no supplies, either you ran away from home, or from some serious trouble," the old man tells you. "But, if you were able to beat a Gorilla Goat, you can obviously take care of yourselves, so instead of trying to make you go home, I'll just give you a little extra help with whatever it is you're doing."

Lantana grins joyously. "Thank you so much."

A friend of mine who is fluent in Japanese and studying Chinese actually told me that many characters are interchangeable between the two languages, aside from a small few that have drastically different meanings

Nope, they share the pictograph alphabet but even then most of those pictographs have changed meanings. Although a Japanese person could probably try to read some Chinese but it would mostly be lost on him.

That's because the Japanese took characters from Chinese. They're incredibly different spoken.

"I really appreciate it," you tell the man.

"Don't worry about it," he tells you, chuckling. "This thing's worth almost a gold piece, anyway, I'm just throwing in a little bit extra, no big deal."

"Do you want us to carry it over to your building?" you ask the man, still wanting to give him a bit of help as a way of saying thank you.

"I'd appreciate that," he tells you, starting off toward the building. "I'll go and get your money ready in the meantime."

"You should probably take it around back," Mauya instructs you, taking a different path to the building. "Follow me."

Standing across from one another, you and Lantana walk on each side of the sled, directing it across the ground after the girl. After seeing your interaction with the old man, the villagers seem largely more comfortable with your presence, and mostly just leave you both alone. One or two give polite "hello"s as you pass, and soon, you reach the back of the building, where you set the creature down.

"You can come around front now," Mauya tells you. "Gundro should have your money, and you might want to take a look at what he has for sale."

"That sounds good," Lantana says, following the girl around the building. "Do you work for him?"

"Sometimes," she answers. "When he needs the extra help."

At very least if all of this will not come to be, we can still hope that Lantana will share some tragic background.
Still whatever happened to her childhood place will probably be lesser than what happened to Aang as full scale genocide is rare. Aang had really fucked up backstory for child's show.

"So, what do you do?" you ask the girl.

"Odd jobs around the village," she answers. "Helping around Gundro's shop, fishing, sometimes helping get canoes across the rivers, that sort of thing."

"Do you know someone who could get us across the river?" you ask.

"Sure, plenty of people," she answers. "There's a lot of fishermen in this village, they'll get you across for a little money or some help with their fishing, no problem."

The three of you step into the shop, and find that that there are several things you'd probably be interested in purchasing; bedrolls, blankets, coats, and basic articles of clothing.

Gundro comes from behind a counter, placing a golden coin in your hand.

"Here you are," he tells you with a smile. "Spend it well."

First, you tell the man that you'd like to buy a few things. Namely, you need bedrolls, blankets, coats, and some new clothes. The old man shows you what he has to offer, and soon you've made your purchase; three new outfits each, two bedrolls, two coats, two blankets, and two bags to carry them in.

Once your purchases have been made, the old man hands a bag of coins to you, and a bag to Lantana.

"There's eighty silver pieces there," the man tells you. "Be careful not to lose it."

"Thanks so much," Lantana says as she shoulders her bag. "I can't wait to get changed into these new clothes."

"My pleasure," the man says. "Thank you both for the business."

"Say, is there any place we can buy some medicines around here?" you ask. "Or a map?"

"Ling at the edge of the village sells some medicines," Mauya tells you. "And you can buy maps from Drano two doors down."

You explain to the man that you'd like to buy a map.

His eyebrows raise in surprise. "Really? Well, it's twenty silver for a world map, boy."

You place the necessary amount of coins on the table, and the man carefully counts it before turning around and retrieving a map from the shelf behind his counter.

"Here you are, young man," he tells you, his tone far less dismissive now. "I should warn you, though, with all of that business going on with Jungo, or whatever his name is, some of the borders on this map may be out of date."

You decide to ask him if he's heard any rumors or interesting information in that regard lately.

"Well, I've heard whispers that Jungo is encroaching on Lord Gonho's border," the man tells you. "Supposedly, that's why most of the men around here were called West. If Jungo really is coming, I doubt that they'll be able to stop him."

"So, what happens to the people Jungo defeats?" you ask the man.

His somewhat impatient tone returns. "Young man, I have work to do, I can't simply sit around and gossip with you."

Sighing, you place another silver piece on the table.

The man stares at the coin for a moment before reaching out and taking it. "Alright, there are a few things that can happen. When Jungo captures enemy soldiers, he usually gives them the chance to join him, or so they say. Those that refuse either die, or are put to work mining or doing some other form of labor."

A glimmer of hope works its way into your heart. There's a chance that your father could still be alive.

"Now, I'm not sure where these mines are, or if the stories are even true," the man continues, oblivious to what's going on in your head. "But, the information I get is usually pretty accurate. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do."

Leaving the man's shop, you make your way back to Gundro's store, waiting outside for Lantana to return.

"So," a voice says from behind you. "Where are you two going, anyway?"

Turning around, you see Mauya leaning against the door frame.

Not wanting to tell her the truth, but also not wanting to make her overly suspicious, you decide to just give lying a try. But, what to go with?

For some reason, the first idea that comes to mind involves Lantana. Thinking it over, you realize that it's a pretty easy lie to sell. You throw a nervous glance in the direction your friend walked off in, and speak in a tone that matches it.

"Well, don't tell Lantana, but I'm planning to confess to her," you explain to Mauya. "I wanted to take her to where we first met."

The look on Mauya's face tells you that she buys that explanation. "Well, good luck."

"Thanks," you tell her. "So, why are you so curious, anyway."

"We've had a few people come through here lately," she explains to you. "They've been running from that warlord from the West. Each time someone comes through here, we've found out he's getting closer and closer. I just thought that might be why you two were here, to run away from him."

Before the conversation can continue, Lantana returns, a smile on her face and a spring in her step.

"Hey," she greets you before turning to Mauya. "Thanks for helping us out."

"Yeah," you answer. "Were you able to get the medicine?"

She nods. "They had a few kinds that I thought might come in handy."

"We should probably get some food, then," you suggest.

She nods. "Good idea."

The two of you walk to the market, buying some fresh fruits to eat in the short term, and some rations that can be kept for a longer period of time during your trip.

When all is said and done, you have fifty silver pieces left, and two full bags with enough supplies to keep you going for a good, long while.

Lantana is positively beaming as you take inventory. Once the two of you are satisfied, she leans back and takes a bite of one of the apples you bought at the market.

Wondering about the cheerfulness Lantana is displaying, you decide to ask her why she's so happy.

"Are you kidding?" she asks. "Fresh fruit, new clothes, bedrolls, blankets, a map to tell us where we're going, and enough food to keep us going for a good long while? What's not to be happy about?"

You're glad to have all of these supplies, too, but she's really, really happy about it. Then again, if she's been on the run for a year, these things might seem like real luxuries to her.

Maybe sometimes it's just good to appreciate the simple things.

So, you take a moment to do just that, leaning back and taking a bite of fresh fruit, savoring the taste of the delicious food, and the feeling of relaxation that comes with not currently having to fight for your life. Hard to believe you've grown nostalgic for such things after only a day, you can only imagine how Lantana must feel.

Unfortunately, it isn't smart to just rest for too long, and you soon lean forward, spreading the map out between yourself and Lantana.

The village is situated on the western bank of a long river that stretches down into a large lake, a lake which is separated from another by a narrow path called "The Serpent's Pass".

"Okay, to get to the Air Temple, we'll need to cross the river, then head North into the mountains," Lantana says, leaning forward and illustrating a path with her finger. "The temple is at the Northern tip of the continent, on top of a high mountain. It's not going to be an easy trip."

>A. The two of you will be fine

"Well, if it isn't an easy trip, that means it'll be hard for the army to follow us," you tell her optimistically.

"That's true," Lantana says, nodding in agreement. "Moving their whole army through those mountains would be really tricky."

Nodding at her, you continue. "And besides, this could be fun. Who knows what's up there?"

"You mean, besides Airbenders?" she jokes. "That's true; there's all kinds of things we could see out there."

Rolling up the map, you place it back into your bag, finishing the fruit in your hand before standing up.

"We should probably change before we go," Lantana tells you, retrieving a moss-green outfit from her bag and walking toward the woods.

Your clothes aren't exactly in the best shape, either. Granted, you haven't been wearing them for a year, but you could still do with a change.

Heading to the forest (away from Lantana), you change out of your dirty clothes and put on the pine colored shirt and pants you bought from Gundro's shop. Between the bath you took earlier, the food you ate just not, and the new outfit, you feel like a new person.

Returning to the spot where you parted ways with Lantana, you spot Mauya walking toward one of the houses, a basket of fish in her hands.

As you wait for Lantana to return, Mauya enters the house, her eyes locking with yours for just a second before she shuts the door.

The Avatar doesn't keep you waiting for very long, appearing soon after in her simple moss-green clothing. She opted for a long-sleeved shirt and long-legged pants, in the interest of giving herself a bit of extra protection from the elements.

Calling it now. SOM won't let the Avatar learn Air Bending yet since the Air Nomads will probably be very strict about the correct order of learning the elements.
>>
>>596663
Still don't need Mauya then!
>>
>>596597

Instead of answering her question, you decide to compliment her looks, telling her that she looks great.

Lantana blushes, looking down and stammering a bit.

"Uh..t-thanks," she tells you.

"But yeah," you tell her, changing the subject. "We probably should."

"Well, Mauya mentioned that there are plenty of fishermen around here that can get us across the river," Lantana says, recovering from her embarrassment and looking around. "Too bad I haven't learned Waterbending yet."

Yeah, that would probably be helpful. But, the two of you will be fine without it for now. Spotting a man readying himself to set out onto the river, you and Lantana rush toward him, readying yourselves for the next step of your adventure.

You sit in the back of a canoe, with Lantana sitting in the front, and a fisherman sitting between the two of you, rowing the small boat across the lake that separates the fishing village from the plains leading to the mountains.

As Mauya said, there was no shortage of people willing to take you across the river for a price. And so, for a single silver piece, you and Lantana have secured a ride that will take you one step closer to your destination.

The waters are peaceful in this section of the river, and there are several other canoes scattered about, from which men and women do their best to round up fish to consume or sell. The weather is also nice for the moment, with the shining sun and cool breeze keeping temperatures nice and warm.

Despite the fact that everything seems to be going well, Lantana seems a bit on edge. She scans the surrounding waters with narrowed eyes, worry etched onto her face.

The fisherman rowing the canoe, an older man by the name of Yun, seems oblivious to your friend's discomfort, droning on with some dull story about a large fish he caught here several years ago.

>A. Ask Lantana what's wrong

>B. Ask the man if he wouldn't mind being quiet

Instead of asking what Lantana is so worried about, you decide to ask the man rowing your boat if there's anything in this river worth concerning yourself with.

"Huh?" the old man grunts when you interrupt his story.

"Is there anything dangerous in this river?" you repeat, keeping your tone polite.

"Well, there are Catgators around here," he answers after a moment of thought. "We see them from time to time, but there's enough fish in this river where they don't really feel the need to bother us."

You've never seen a Catgator before. In fact, you've only ever heard of them in stories. You remember that your dad once told you a tale of a great Earth Kingdom hero named Shin who saved a village from a rampaging group of the creatures. They're big and mean, but you really don't know anything else about them. That probably doesn't matter, though, as Yun seems convinced that they won't be a problem.

Still, Lantana doesn't seem to have been made any less worried by this explanation. She continues to eye the water as if something's about to reach up from it and grab her.

"Are you alright?" you ask Lantana.

Taking her eyes off the water, the Avatar looks over at you with a blank expression on her face, seeming a bit confused.

"I'm not sure," she tells you. "I just have this feeling, like there's something down there."

"Can't swim?" Yun guesses, looking at your friend.

"No, that's not it," Lantana tells him. "I can swim okay, I just...."

She looks back at the water again. "It's probably nothing; I'm just being paranoid, I guess."

The girl forces a smile, trying to reassure you that she's okay and probably just imagining things, but you can't help but wonder if maybe there's something else to it. Maybe there really is something down there, and her "Avatar senses" or whatever are picking up on it. Or, maybe Yun's right and she really can't swim. You don't know.

Your curiosity gets the better of you, and you decide to see if there really is something down there, or if Lantana is just being paranoid. As Yun resumes his fishing tale for nobody to listen to, you take a look over the side and into the water.

The water is clear enough for you to see a few feet below the surface, but not enough for you to see the bottom. Aside from a few fish swimming by, you don't see anything at first. But, the fish quickly scatter and swim off, as if spooked by something. That's when you see a massive, dark shape move under the water beside the boat.

Lantana gasps, and Yun, thinking she's reacting to his story, grins and continues with a bit more gusto. You keep your eyes on the direction the shape was moving, finding that one of the canoes is directly in its path. The two men fishing on it don't seem to notice anything amiss, but moments later, their canoe is hurled from the water, sending the two men screaming into the air and plummeting back down to the river, landing beside their canoe, which has been smashed in half.

"What in the world?" Yun asks, finally stopping his story and looking in the direction of the two terrified men. "Chon! Vuke! Have you two been drinking?"

"I don't think that's it," Lantana says in a very nervous tone. "I think they might need our help."

"Ah, don't worry little lady," Yun tells her in an amused tone. "Those boys do this sort of thing from time to time, it's nothing to-"

With a scream, one of the men vanishes beneath the water.

"-worry about." Yun finishes, all confidence and amusement leaving his voice.

The last of the two fishermen desperately flails about in the water, his panic seeming to stop him from doing the rational thing and swimming to shore. He's probably going to need your help.

"Yun, can you get us over to that guy?" you ask the man rowing the canoe.

"Yeah..." he says, seemingly in a daze as he turns the canoe toward the desperate man.

Other fishermen seem to have gotten the same idea, and they drop what they're doing so that they can rush to the man's aid. But, long before they can reach him, he screams in terror and vanishes beneath the surface, just as his friend did.

"Chon, no!" Yun shouts in front of you.

"What just happened?!" you hear a fisherman shout from one of the other canoes.

As the fishermen continue to close in and frantically attempt to figure out what's going on, one of the canoes is flipped. This time, you see something; some large, teal-colored object rising from the water and striking the side of the canoe. It looks like the body of a snake, curling into a hump shape before vanishing beneath the water as the woman who had occupied the canoe desperately attempts to swim away.

Removing your backpack, you dive into the river, making note of the woman's position before dropping beneath the surface and swimming toward her. Once you're confident that you've made it close enough, you raise the Earth at the bottom of the river, using it to lift the woman high above the water.

As you surface, you see that the woman is looking around frantically, shaking with fear. But, she is very much alive.

However, you find yourself wondering how much longer that will last as the mysterious aquatic attacker finally reveals itself.

A massive head with fins on either side of it and whiskers on either side of the nose explodes from the water, letting out a roar that shakes you to the core. The head rises higher and higher on what you first assume to be its neck, but soon come to realize is a snakelike body that seems to stretch endlessly.

The massive creature looks around, its massive head changing attention between the various screaming fishermen and the woman atop the stone pillar. Roaring with fury, the creature chooses the nearest canoe and swallows it in a single gulp. Terrified, the others turn and begin to flee.

As you plan on what to do next, you soon find yourself lifted from the water, standing just above the surface of the river. Looking down, you see that a pillar of Earth has been raised beneath you, its top poking just above the water, and allowing you to stand.

Looking to your right, you see Lantana beside you, her feet planted as firmly as they can be on the wet Earth. Making a lifting motion and grunting with exertion, she raises a massive chunk of rock from the riverbed, hurling it toward the creature as it rushes at another canoe.

The rock hits the creature in the side of the head, knocking it away from its intended prey. The resulting splash nearly capsizes the canoe, but luck is on the side of the two fishermen occupying it, as they're able to steady themselves and move away.

Enraged, the creature turns its attention on Lantana, and lets out a roar before diving in her direction.

Taking a page from Lantana's book, you attempt to rip a chunk of Earth from the riverbed to hurl at the creature, but are simply not fast enough to do it in time.

Lantana, for her part, turns and creates a second platform, which she prepares to leap over to. However, both creating it and reaching it simply takes too long, and the side of the creature's body hits her halfway across, throwing her onto the platform, and sending her sliding into the water.

The creature spins around, intending to swallow the disoriented girl whole just as it did the fishermen.

Finishing the process of ripping a chunk of Earth from the riverbed, you hurl the massive piece of rock at the hungry creature, striking it in the side of the head just as Lantana did, saving her as she did the occupants of the canoe.

The Avatar rises from beneath the water atop a pillar of Earth, putting herself at the same level as the others, just above the water-level. Taking a moment and groaning with exertion, she raises several more pillars all around you, giving the two of you options for retreat.

The beast resurfaces, roaring with fury as it rears up to a horrific height and glares down at you. Pulling its head back and opening its jaws wide, it sends a torrent of water heading right for you.

You try to move out of the way, but not fast enough as the jet of water strikes you in the chest and pushes you right into the lake. Recovering quickly, you surface to see Lantana leaping from platform to platform, hurling rocks at the creature as it shoots streams of water at her.

She manages to land several hits, but none of them seem to do anything more than further anger the creature, and soon enough, her luck runs out. She's caught by a jet of water and knocked into the water beside you.

As Lantana surfaces at your side, the creature lets out a roar and lunges down at the two of you, its massive body smashing through your thin pillars as it comes into swallow you both. You close your eyes, waiting for the end, but it never comes. Instead, you hear the creature roar in surprise, and open your eyes to see it rear back up.

Lantana's right arm wraps around you, and the two of you quickly rise from the lake on a massive vortex of water which swirls around your bodies. The creature roars once more, lunging forward, only to be thrown back by an invisible force as Lantana thrusts a hand toward it. Raising her arm, Lantana somehow manages to lift a gigantic stone hand from the riverbed, which proceeds to wraps its fingers around the creature's throat, holding it in place as it squirms and cries out in distress. Its body thrashes about, but it is unable to free itself.

Meanwhile, Lantana rips one of remaining pillars from the riverbed, hurling the massive rock directly at the creature's face, shattering the hand, but also harming the creature, who falls backward and crashes into the water.

This time, when it resurfaces, it turns and flees down the river.

Lantana then turns, using the vortex of water to transport the two of you back to the village-side of the lake, where the surviving canoes have retreated. As soon as she gets the two of you safely to shore, Lantana's eyes go blank, and she collapses before passing out.

Turning her onto her back, you kneel beside Lantana, putting your ear to her chest to make sure she's still breathing. Finding that she is, you decide to take her someplace away from the riverbed in order to rest. The villagers stare and whisper to each other as you carry the exhausted girl to a spot where she can lie down.

As you stand back up after setting Lantana down, you hear a girl's voice behind you.

"She's the Avatar?"

Turning around, you find Mauya staring down at Lantana with wide eyes and an expression of disbelief on her face.

She clearly saw what Lantana just did, so there's really no point in trying to lie to her. All that would serve to do is make you look like a dishonest imbecile.

"Yes," you answer truthfully. "Please, don't tell anybody."

Mauya looks at you like you're an idiot. "Most of the village saw what just happened, you know. I don't think it's going to be a secret around here."

That's a fair point. Still, it's not really the villagers that you're too worried about knowing who Lantana is.

"Don't worry," Mauya tells you, seeming to have figured out your meaning. "None of us know where you're going, so it's not like we'll send people after you."

Whispering draws both of your attentions, and you glance around to see the villagers discussing what's happened.

"Still, as long as you two are here, you're going to have to deal with attention," Mauya tells you, sounding slightly apologetic. "After something like that. I mean, that was the best Waterbending I've ever seen, and was she Airbending too?"

You admit to her that you don't really know, either. Lantana told you that she only knows Earthbending.

"Well, she was definitely Waterbending," Mauya says. "And I think she might have been Airbending too. So, it looks like she's been keeping secrets from you. You might want to talk to her about that before you confess."

"Hey, I'm not a bad Earthbender," you protest.

Mauya chuckles. "Yeah, but Jungo was supposed to be one of the strongest Earthbenders in the world. "Not bad" wouldn't be anywhere near enough to deal with him."

"I got lucky," you explain. "He was fighting Lantana, got angry and unfocused, and I was able to catch him by surprise."

Mauya looks as if she might buy that explanation, so you proceed to continue your story, telling her about the chase as you and Lantana fled the village.

"An Airbender?" Mauya asks, sounding skeptical again. "Why would one of them be working for Jungo?"

Admittedly, you don't know, and you tell her as much. You also warn her to take your story seriously, since the army could show up at this village at any time.

Mauya shrugs as if it's no big deal. "That's fine. None of us are going to fight, anyway. Like I said before, we don't really care who we pay our taxes to."

"What about the men who went to fight?" you ask her. "Aren't you worried about your father?"

She scowls. "No, I'm not worried about my father."

Mauya turns away, and starts walking off. "Good luck with your trip. Talk to Yun, I'm sure he'll take you across the river."

RIP. Goodbye water party member

Were you hoping the serpent would bully us enough to trigger avatar state or did we just mess up that bad?
>>
>>599876
I was half-expecting you guys to pass every single roll and somehow scare that thing off.
>>
>>599891
We did well enough for an earthbender on a lake
>>
>>599828
Dude what.
Armies march and land changes hands all the time, that doesn't automatically make them evil douches.

They're just soldiers doing what they're told.
They do their job, get paid and go home, assuming they don't die.
>>
>>599898
Oh, yeah, you guys did very well given the circumstances

>>599899
Pretty much
>>
>>599899
Yeah but soldiers in an army can't always be the nicest of people. Often an attack on a village turns to raid, with all that it entails.
>>
>>599913
even nice men can't resist the temptation of an easy rape

it's science
>>
>>599920
Sure maybe they are nice in general, but they won't seem nice to those villagers...

Thanks for running Som, it's always a pleasure I can't wait for the next rock pun.

We are going to continue on to the mountain next thread? Provided we don't find obstacles.
>>
>>599931
Possibly. Who knows what could happen?
>>
>>599940
Looking forward to another great thread.

Let's not get crazy, here

Best girl.

Different approaches to bending make benders have different abilities
like lightning being a fire bender imitating a water bender
ice being a water bender imitating earth
Steam being a fire bender imitating air
Also the element has a kind of evolved stage like water-blood and air-flying which are more unique and spiritual

I guess the earth equivalents are
Earth Evolved = Metal
Sand = Air/Water
Mud = Water
Lava = Fire

How about when we go and watch the avatars training we train alongside them to in still their techniques and use them to adapt our earthbending

We could be the master of all the earth styles

I don't see us getting a lot of opportunities to bend lava but Ive been wrong before
Has it not occurred to anyone else that Toph being credited with metal bending most likely means, even if we do learn it, we're going to die before we can tell anyone?
>>

The other possibilities include the only copies of the teachings existing at that time being in the grand library with the owl demon or the people who know about it being very secretive.
>>
>>601338
Totally forgot about the grand library arc, I feel better now
>>
>>601318
If we get to the point of metal bending, I don't see us fighting tanks light they did in ATLA. We are going to blend into the avatars party most likely so focus will be on her either people or history wise. Som also did not confirm metal bending he just hinted at the possibility, or we could do it and then die, fickle dice and all that. I don't know how our protag will figure it out though. Toph did with her sense thing don't recall the name but that earthbending this that helps her see, she could see the fragments of earth in the metal.
>>
I just want to crystal bend.

I loved that owl. The whole thing with presenting new knowledge was just great. That's the kind of thing I wish I could come up with when GMing games. It's perfect for players to really think about what unique knowledge their characters can offer, even if it's a knot.
>>
>>601518
Aang and the Dai Li, and also Bumi (I think) did this.
>>
>>601841
I know they did it anon. And it was awesome.
