You are Pan, a lowly Pawn in the world of Gambit. The King of the Realm is holding a tournament within the Capitol city to find the greatest mind in the kingdom.

The grand prize for winning the tournament is any one wish, (within the King's power of course.) You had set out on your journey about a week ago and you are now nearing your destination.

This is ChessQuest

You arrive at the outer wall of the Capitol city. Just in time too, the tourney starts in a few hours! You hurry into the city and follow the crowds through the streets until you find the Palace.

Simple signs posted all over lead you to a registration terminal. Being but a lowly pawn, you must register as a beginner. The other two options are listed in red.

You, rather meekly, question the Bishop on how the tourney works, where and when your matches will take place.

You realize that asking so many questions might be considered rude and quickly stammer out an apology.

>"No need for apologies, Pan! Why, to answer your questions is the very reason I have been sent here. I remember my first time in the Capitol, mighty confusing place!"

You're slightly put off by the fact that he knew your name, but as a Bishop, Scholar, and Mage, he probably has his ways.

He begins to explain things for you.

>"Well, first off I suppose I should tell you; that was no AI you were facing, but another player with the ranking of Pawn!" You are unable to contain your surprise, but the bishop continues anyways. "Secondly, 16 Pawns showed up for the tournament and now half of them are eliminated. You've already advanced to the second round!"

>"You have another day before your next match and you have a complimentary room to stay in for the duration of the games. Further instructions will arrive on the morning of your next match."

This is alot to take in, but it's probably best to ask questions while he's answering them. Is there anything else you'd like to ask?

His face falters for a moment, but he soon recovers.
>"You mean you came here for the tournament without knowing the prize? Should you emerge the victor, the King shall grant you any one thing you desire."
You remember that is the reason you came for the tournament. In the heat of the moment, you must have forgotten.

Money.
Power.
Women.

These are the first three things that come to mind, but you wonder if they are to cliché. You'll think about your wish when the time comes. For now, you have another question.
>>609602

>"Strictly speaking, it's a matter of preference. The knight and the bishop are both worth the same amount of points on the board, and the bishop and knight ranks are equal, albeit with different jobs, around the city. However, bishops have been proven to be slightly better in a pawn/knight vs a pawn/bishop endgame. Of course I might also be a tad bit biased"

You mention the terrible rumors you've heard about the queen. The bishop chuckles a bit

>"Honestly? It's the king I'd watch out for. Anything else before I show you to your room?"

>fall in love with king

Without any further questions to ask, you allow yourself to be escorted to your room. The bishop gives you a smile and a quick farewell before disappearing much the same way he appeared.

You look around the room and it's fairly empty other than a bed in the corner and a door leading to a small bathroom.

It's not quite night yet, what would you like to do?

You open the door leading to what was a hallway only to find a room, slightly larger than your bathroom. At the far end of the room is a large computer screen, much like the one you played on earlier.

Emblazoned on the screen are the words:

>"WELCOME TO THE DIRECTORY"

You touch the screen and a list of locations fades into view.

You press the kitchens option and the wall begins to fold away as though it were paper. A new hallway presents itself leading forward. After a short walk, it curves slightly to the right and you walk into a room filled with everything one would need to prepare the finest foods for the fastest stomachs.

There aren't too many people here right now, probably because it's after supper time. Of the few who remain here, they all bear the ranking of Pawn. Although the head chef might rank as a knight/bishop, he wouldn't subject himself to the end of night tasks of inventory and washing dishes.

One of the workers looks at you and inquires as to what you need.

Holy shit kitchens are hard to draw. Sorry for the sloppy background

I'll continue this in a new thread. It seems we've reached autosage. Also, my boss is in the office today so updates will be painfully slow.

Why else would you come to the kitchens? You're pretty damned hungry, that chess match took much longer than you expected and you'd forgone the chance to eat anything.
You apologize for being that guy who walks in 5 minutes before close and orders something, but you could really go for some grub right now. The pawn in charge sighs and says that they're used to this sort of thing so they always prepare a spare pizza before they shut the ovens down.
The pizza isn't hot anymore, but it isn't cold yet either. You graciously thank the pawns and begin to return to your room with your food. Before the walls begin to fold shut behind you, you hear words of encouragement.
>"Good luck in the tournament, make us pawns look good!"

++++++++++

I'll start up the new thread in after a short break
