You are the freakish man-made Abyssal clone of the former United States Navy warship USS Hoel, now going by the alias of WOEL and trying to survive in this crazy world that's making less and less sense to you!

Currently, you were on the civilian freighter Avelia, which was part of a relief convoy headed for Japan. Unfortunately, this meant skirting dangerously close to Abyssal waters, so convoy raids were a very real danger.

And now that danger was practically right in front of you as you watched a massive stormfront roll in. The four Japanese shipgirls tasked with protecting your convoy were rushing in to head it off while the two Burke destroyers stuck close to the convoy itself. On its face, everything seemed to be in order. The escort forces were aware of the threat and were moving to engage it while the convoy headed off in a safe direction.

But something gnawed at you while you watched on the deck, watching the flashes of lightning on the horizon. The howling wind carried whispers, barely audible to your ears, beckoning to come home. The railing was soon coated in a thin layer of ice and frost as your grip tightened.

You get the feeling that the Abyssals weren't here for the convoy. You can only watch with dread as the storm approached, only four little destroyer girls to stand in its way.

Your hairs tingle with dread and your eyes are instinctively drawn downwards towards the water, where your heart practically stops from what you see.

Abyssals, with ghostly thing limbs, were clambering up the side of the Avelia, their sapphire eyes glowing in the night.

Shit. SHIT! They were trying to board the ship!

Your eyes dart around. The crew only had a few guns and flares for self defense. It wasn't a lot but Ka-class subs weren't particularly tough, anyways.

Or you could call the US detroyers or the shipgirls to support, but the shipgirls were pretty busy out in the storm and the Burkes weren't ideal for this kind of fighting...

But every second you dawdled, the closer they were getting to you...

Your hands shiver and stumble as you try to pull the walkie talkie out of your raincoat.

"Captain!" You scream. "Abyssals are boarding the ship!"

"What?!" The Captain sputters. "Are you sure?!"

"I'M WATCHING THEM CRAWL RIGHT UP THE HULL!" You continue to yell. "If we don't do anything soon they'll be all over us!"

"Damnit..." The Captain seethes, though you could feel his uncertainty rolling out of even the radio. You look up at the bridge, and you can see the silhouettes of the crew dashing back and forth in confusion. If nobody did anything soon, this whole damn ship was doomed!

"Start maneuvering! Throw them off!" You advise. Even she wasn't all that fast, the sheer weight that the Avelia could throw around when turning sharply and rapidly meant the inertia alone could throw would be climbers off.

"R-right!" The Captain agrees. "Helm! Start maneuvering! Alternate port and starboard turns!"

You can then feel the ship under you shift as the helmsman starts off with a hard starboard turn. The entire hull rumbles from the maneuver, and the Ka subs hesitate from the new unexpected move. A add to your luck, a massive wave crashes right into the turning Avelia, washing a good number of the Kas off like bugs on a windshield. The ship starts to shift again to port, and more Kas begin to lose their grips and fall back into the water.

Unfortunately, one stubbornly manages to hold on, climbing higher and higher and with one herculean leap, grabs a hand firmly on the rail, her one blue eye glaring at you.

You aim your kick, which connects solidly with the the Abyssal's face, smashing apart the ugly ass breathing mask covering its mouth. The Abyssal reels back, and her one handhold on the railing comes loose.

Unfortunately, her other arms finds purchase on your leg, which grabs onto your exposed ankle, and her weight and gravity takes care of the rest, pulling you up and over the rail, sending the two of you toppling towards the raging and roiling waters below.

You know that there's no way you were getting back on the ship at this point. Your best and only course of action was to hit the water fighting. You finally summon your Rig, shoving your arm mounted cannon right into the Ka's eye and blowing its skull off in one smooth motion. You then adjust your balance so you land on the water on your feet, sending frothy seawater spraying everywhere. The Ka-class subs that had been washed off the hull previously are waiting below for you, and you quickly make short work of them, lobbing depth charges as fast as your launchers could cycle. Your 5 inch guns also start swiveling independently, taking out targets. Up those close, the rather fragile Kas were no match for you, and the Abyssals quickly begin to flee.

With a brief moment of respite, you finally try to guage the situation around you. You glance at the Avelia, which was now rapidly gaining distance from you as it tried to speed away from danger. You could see searchlight beams sweeping across the water. Did they see you fall overboard?

Meanwhile, over the sound of the thunder and waves, you could hear the 5 inch cannons of the Burkes booming as they lobbed shells into the stormfront.

Of the Japanese shipgirls, there was no sign. Did they head deeper into the storm?

First things first, you needed to make sure those Japanese shipgirls were okay. The fact that they haven't turned up yet was worrying...

But how to make sure? Shooting out a radio call was the easiest way, but with all these Abyssals present... they only had a vague idea of where you were right now. A radio call would make your position easier to narrow down.

Or you could just go in and do it the old fashioned way...

Damnit, you couldn't risk sending out a radio message. You didn't know their comms or encryption so you you'd have to communicate to them over an open channel. The last thing you wanted to do with Abyssals after your ass.

So instead, you power up your boilers and drive towards the roiling stormclouds...

You sail into the stormfront, braving the sharp winds and constant rain smacking your body and blurring your optics. Thankfully, you've still got that good old American radar, which proves a help in maintaining your bearings. You catch four tightly clustered contacts, surrounded by a much looser formation of contacts.

You suspected that the four young destroyer girls overextended or were lured too far into the storm, where they were quickly surrounded. From what you could tell, there were at least eight destroyers and two light cruisers surrounding them.

Things seemed to be at a tense standoff, with neither side trying to engage. But you knew that this waiting game was favoring the Abyssals. Every second wasted was another second the convoy was getting farther away, risking the girls getting completely cut off.

However, the Abyssals didn't seem to notice you were behind them. Or did they think you were one of them?

Shit, what would the destroyer girls think if they saw you?

Despite your desire the help the Japanese destroyers in distress, you didn't want to risk revealing yourself, as well. So you stay a ways back, taking careful aim with your guns and thanking the US Navy for having the foresight to develop radar fire control.

Now that you've gotten a little closer, you can get a better read of what you're facing. Eight destroyers and four Ri-class light cruisers. The destroyers were easier targets, but the Ris were probably the local commanders. Taking them out could sow some confusion.

Then again, you do recall that Abyssal destroyers were highly unpredictable when not under any command...

From your position, it was impossible to miss. Your 5 inch cannons roar as the pump shells downrange, each one focusing on a different target. Four of the destroyers immediately go down, blowing them to pieces. The Ri-class cruisers instantly turn to face you, classifying you as a new threat. This was the perfect time to for those destroyers to-

You linger behind for a second to watch as the spunky little destroyers slammed right into the backs of the distracted Ri-class cruisers, shredding them apart with close range cannon fire. You can't help but grin a bit. You think Hoel and the others would like them a lot if they were here.

Anyways, it looked like they had things handled here. However, you still had your own problems. The Avelia was already pretty damn far away, and you suspect the crew had already written you off as lost at sea. If you hurried now, maybe you could catch up with them. But considering the convoy was on high alert, they could mistake you for an Abyssal...

Then again, you were already fairly close Japan. If you played it smart, you could sneak into Japan from the sea before sunrise.

You start sailing out of the storm front, and finally break out to more stable waters. Unfortunately, you're dismayed to find out that the convoy was much farther out than you had initially thought, now just distant specks over the horizon. You see a pair of helicopters, no doubt dispatched from the Burkes, making their way over to the Japanese shipgirls, no doubt to pick them up.

Damn, you were going to have to just be fast, then.

Unfortunately, your radar starts to act up, as your skin starts to crawl. You peek over your shoulder to see more sapphire eyes glowing in the dark, eying you from a distance. Shadowing you. You were already cut off from the convoy. They could take all the time in the world to trail you.

Shit, SHIT. You couldn't afford to stay and fight. You needed to get back to the convoy! You pour more fire into your boilers, trying to eke out as much speed as you could.

All the while the Abyssals tried to keep pace with you from behind...

Do you want to bank the 20 for a FATE POINT? You can do that, but it won't guarantee that you'll decisively beat the Abyssal's 20!

Thankfully, the Abyssals can't even catch up to you, and it's not just due to your speed.

Strangely, and against all expectations, you see shells falling among and exploding against the Abyssals, scattering them and shredding not just their bodies, but their formation, too. The shelling was fierce and brutal.

And it wasn't coming from the convoy escorts. In fact, the fire was coming from the complete opposite direction! Your radar lights up with over a dozen new contacts, moving fast and in tight formation. They definitely weren't Abyssals, but... you've never seen contacts like these before. Definitely shipgirls, but not a type you were familiar with.

However, you see a pair of them break off from the main battle and start heading towards YOU.

They.. whoever they are, could possibly think you were one of the Abyssals too, r-right?

Your first instinct is to run. Run as fast as you can. You keep your boilers flaring at maximum power as you try to gain more distance. However, the two incoming contacts, while a little slower than you, are still well within gun range...

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have two points!

Thankfully, you're still far away enough that the incoming contacts can't land a solid hit on you, and they begin to fall further behind before giving up altogether, circling back to finish off the remaining Abyssals.

You finally breathe a sigh of relief, and start chasing after the convoy again. Soon enough, you can see the Avelia, still afloat. But you could immediately tell something was wrong.

The entire ship was dark. In a panic, you speed up to inspect it closer. There wasn't any obvious damage, though it was still dark, it was tough to see anyways. But you do note that the ship was listing slightly and the lifeboats were missing. Did the crew abandon ship?

You had to find out what happened to her. You sail up closer to the ship. You see rope ladders dangling off the side, sure signs that the crew had abandoned ship. At least it provided you a way to get up to the top deck. You get to the top, and suddenly, you feel a bit of sadness.

Sure, the ship was only a temporary home at best, and you never had any particular connection to her, but still. It was a bit sad to see a ship to be left in the cold and dark like this.

Well, at least that meant the both of you had something in common, there.

You clamber up to the darkened top deck, and then make your way up to the bridge, which likewise was uncharacteristically dark. Going inside, you saw it was still populated with all of the random knickknacks, souvenirs, and decorations every ship bridge had. Further reinforcing the fact at how quickly everybody apparently left.

However, what you do find is the ship's logbook, or at least, where the logbook should have been. There's a note, hastily scribbled and posted on the desk.

>COLE

>TOOK A TORPEDO HIT. CONTAINED FLOODING BUT ENGINE WAS DAMAGED. FORCED TO ABANDON SHIP WITH REST OF CONVOY. IF YOU'RE READING THIS, WE STAYED AS LONG AS WE COULD.

>I'M SORRY

So.... alone all again. You guess this was your lot in life, huh?

You didn't even need your radar to let you know that the ship was being boarded at this point. The loud clanging and barely comprehensible shouting outside was enough proof. They'd probably be barging in to the bridge any second now.

Well, fuck it. If these bastards wanted a fight, you might as well give them one. You stand up, resummoning your Rig as you take aim at the the door...

Only to see the the face of a little girl pop up through the door's window, with the biggest shit-eating grin on her face.

"The fuck!" You yelp in surprise as you instinctively pull the trigger, blasting the window.

"Xaxaxaxaxaxa!" The girl laughs as she shuffles away before your shot even lands. "Too slowest of shooting!"

Before you can even wrap your head around the poorly worded and heavily accented phrase, the bridge door is kicked down, revealing a very hard edged and grim faced shipgirl. Cruiser level, at least. She aims a massive 7 inch gun right at your face, but doesn't immediately fire.

And then she starts speaking Russian. Not at you, of course, but to one of her compatriots over the radio.

"FUCKING REDS!" You scowl as you keep your cannon raised. Sure they were once allies during the War, but you had read up on the shit that happened afterwards, and you learned that Russians were not particularly savory people. Hell, this cruiser here didn't seem to be the friendliest of faces around.

"Kirov! Is this way to treat friend?" A slightly larger and older woman with long wavy hair strides in slaps the Russian cruiser on the back hard, knocking her out of her fighting stance. Of course she's speaking in horribly accented and broken English.

"We cannot trust her, Sevastapol." The cruiser pouts. Her English seems to be a lot more fluent. "We don't know who she is."

"Of course we know!" Sevastapol chortles as she glances at you. "Pale skin, 5 inch gun, and runs away very fast? Is obvious who she is!"

"Who?" Kirov raises an eyebrow.

"Yeah, who?" You raise an eyebrow.

"She is German, of course!" Sevastapol laughs.

You... you're not even sure how this Russian battleship even came to that conclusion.

"Um... ja! Ja!" You nod quickly. Well, if these Russians were gonna think you were German, you might as well humor them. It was better than trying to explain to them that you were half Abysal. "I am a proud German of the Kriegsmarine!"

Kirov gives you a venomous glare, which is immediately dispelled by Sevastapol's apparently endless good mood.

"Is all right! We are all friends here!" The battleship laughs as she slaps Kirov's back again. "Besides, Tashkent is of needing new friend! Is of good sign to see other ship as fast as her! Even if she is silly German!"

"I will be keeping an eye on you, Fascist." Kirov glowers.

"Sure thing, Communist." You reply

"See? You two such good friends already!" Sevastapol says happily.

Just what did you get yourself into...?

>BTW Merc, what's the political situation with the Yellow and Red countries?

Relations have been... interesting to say the least. China has largely been trying to rebuild its navy as well as beef up its shoreline defenses, and as a result has reverted to its isolationist roots, though they still contribute some aid to their immediate neighbors.

Russia likewise has been keeping to itself mostly, but they provide a lot of conventional support in the Black, Baltic, and Mediterranean seas to free up EU and NATO navies to secure the Atlantic and North seas. Interestingly enough, though, Russia has never publicly reported the appearance of any Soviet Navy shipgirls...

>>617969
Fortunately for Woel, American and German destroyers look kinda similar, and it's not like any of the Russian shipgirls have had experience trying to tell the two apart.
