/qst/ - Quests

Previously on 1940's Mech Quest...

Your mission is running smoothly. You found a tunnel on the map and decided to use it to reach the enemies village. You executed enemy forces guarding the tunnel and used a Jeep to reach the end. You decided it would be best to sneak Corporal Standley out instead of using force.

Made a twitter account so I can let you guys know when I will be running: https://twitter.com/Slavenrhymes

Character stats, party and equipment:

Ill be back in thirty to join in. Got to go get some food with my Older Brother

Rules: After options are posted, there will be a 10 min voting period. AFTER THAT, if need be, you will roll. I will take best 3. If the quests gets more people I will probably make it best 5.
>>
Hell yes, Mech Quest!
>>
There's no need to alert anyone.

I can get him out. We have the element of surprise. These guys must of have thought we would take longer, or another group would spot us and report in. We still have over 10 hours to complete the mission. Plenty of time, no need to take risks yet.

You make your way to the building Freeman marked on his dirt map. After peeking in the window, and certain no one is around, you enter an empty room. You sneak to the next room and find Corporal Standley sitting on the floor, reading a book called "The Grapes of Wrath."

You whisper his name, he looks away from his book and jumps in shock.

"Jesus christ!"

"Standley, you need to stay silent. I'm here to get you out of here."

Standley checks his watch, "You're rescuing me?"

"Sure are. We need to get you to the evac point, two miles east. My team will be escorting you."

"Where are they?"

>A. They are near the tunnel, by the jeeps.

>B. I had them skirt around the village, they are waiting for us in the wood line East from here.
>>

>B. I had them skirt around the village, they are waiting for us in the wood line East from here.

Overwatch is a good thing. They can snipe from the treeline if things go south on us.

It's all on foot, two miles east.

>A. They are near the tunnel, by the jeeps.

Those jeeps can provide adequate cover to our, they're also our quickest means of egress...

I also don't know if it is a good idea to have our forces hang around unsupervised in unsecured enemy territory, possibly encountering patrols or triggering ambushes...

The two of you exit the building the same you came in. You sneak past the opposing force, who are cooking, listening to music and playing some cards.

How unprofessional.

You join the rest of your team, you tell them to pick up, we are moving. You keep the same pace as before, fast and with caution. After 5 mins of movement your radio begins to chatter. It's Alpha one from the village, checking in on Alpha Two from the tunnel.

"Status report Alpha Two"

>A. Ignore it

Changing vote to:

They may go on alert, but only by the tunnel, they dont seem to have tactical awareness just yet. Patrols should go the other way, right?

Evac should be here any min now. You order the squad to use the wood line to conceal themselves.

After several mins, you hear yelling deep in the woods behind you.

They sent a search party to find us. But it doesn't matter now, you see vehicles moving towards your location in the distance.

"Lets move!"

Everyone moves full speed through the field,as you run you notice there are signs that vehicles have been out here before. A large transport vehicle and a Jeep arrives, a Drill Sergeant gets out and yells, "TIME!"

Two hours, 30 mins. Everyone get in the truck, you have an evaluation at HQ.

"Thanks for the rescue guys, and Standley gets into the Jeep.

You find yourself in the same room you had your briefing, it's just your squad, no one has shown up yet. You begin to feel a little nervous.

A First Sergeant Letts enters the room along with Drill Sergeant Crum. They stare at you in silence. After what feels like forever, First Sergeant speaks up.

"We are going to need those keys back."

You hand them over, forgetting you had them.

"So, gentlemen, how do you feel you did?"

"Such as?"

"That BBQ smelled so good, we should have taken that from them too."

First Sergeant gives an intense stare, showing no signs of amusement.

Then he cracks, and begins a hearty laugh.

"You boys have some stones operating like you did."

He stops laughing

"Care to explain why you shot prisoners of war?"

They only did it under my orders, First Sergeant. If we had let those men go, they would have come after us, and we would have failed the mission. If we had tried to take them with us, we would have had to take Stanley in a direct confrontation against unknown forces, and failed the mission. If we weren't operating as an isolated unit with a time limit, we could have had them sent back to camp as prisoners, but under the circumstances, I felt it was the only option that would have led to mission success.

We didn't have the men or the time to watch four men, we couldn't risk it. The mission came first.

The First Sergeant shows no reaction to your answer.

"Tell me how the rest of your mission was completed."

You tell the rest of the details, taking the radio and jeep, scouting the village. Deciding against the ambush and sneaking out and taking the keys before hand so your enemy couldn't not hunt you in vehicles, just in case it came to that.

The First Sergeant takes all the information and asks you to follow him out.

You see the four men you shot, and the others from the village. They are all at attention. The First begins a heartfelt speech directed to them,

"Men, I had given you a mission. You were to guard your captive at all costs. Instead, you gambled, cooked, and played around. It costed some of your men their lives. The enemy took your equipment, weapons, and ammo and used it against you. When you finally did notice something was wrong, they were almost to the evac point. You have failed, miserably and have embarassed me greatly. I was going to punish you myself, but I am going to let Private Grant, decide your fate.

Since they're going to be punished anyway, they may as well do something useful. Also, we're really sad we didn't get that BBQ.

The mean you defeated look at you with great hate and distaste and are silent. First Sergeant Lett turns to them.

"What the FUCK, are you doing still standing there? Didn't you just hear him? GET, MOVING."

The group runs off as if being chased by a demon.

Graduation is upon you, after this you will be training with military Mechs.

Everyone is in dress uniform, and in good spirits.

"We made it Grant!"

"We sure did Elmore."

Elmore so different. He was so scrawny. You think back to the time you two met on the train.

"Hey Grant, thanks for everything. I really mean it."

"You have come along way buddy. Your siblings coming to the graduation?"

"No, would cost too much to bring them. After we finish our Mech training I will move them to where ever I'm stationed at. Your folks coming?"

"No, I will go visit when I get some leave."

The graduation gets underway, nobody can stand still. First Sergeant Lett gives a speech, talking about honor, duty and service. He says all the soldiers deserve to graduate and looks forward to see their careers grow.

"But now, I'd like to recognize a few soldiers.."

Whitebuffalo gets called up and gets an award, he has the highest PT score this cycle.

After a few others go up, your Squad is called up, you guys broke a course record during your mission. You are asked to stay up front.

"Private Grant, has shown great promise during training. He helped lead his team and finish first during the obstacle course, he should great skill during a mechanics class, of course, leading his squad to victory during the last weeks mission.
Private Grant, you are awarded, Soldier of the cycle!"

First Sergeant Pins a medal to your chest, and you are applauded.

>>625303
Awesome, now we get to flounder about like a fish out of water with mechs.
>>
Graduation ends, and there is a cookout. The men you sent to their doom are cooking for the platoon. Victory tastes so good. The platoon pats you on the back and tells you good job.

The platoon eats and shares stories about the last 6 weeks.

Remember the 15 mile run?
There was that time we were kept up for 48 hours straight.
HAHA, remember beating up those guys in the woods?

People ask Elmore to tell the story about the last mission again. Drill Sergeant Crum comes and pulls you aside.

"I was given permission to promote you, all the way to Specialist. Keep up the good work, you may make Sergeant in a few years."

"Thank you Drill Sergeant."

"You don't have to call me that anymore. Look, I put in a good word for you, First Sergeant did too. There are some people who want to talk to you later today. Just enjoy your food and talk, you will be called on later."

You get back to your food, every notices your new rank and gives you more pats on the back.

You're not sure what's going on yet, best wait before you say anything.

"I'm fine, we can talk about it later."

Elmore looks intrigued, but doesn't push the subject.

After you finish up with the Platoon you say your good byes. Not everyone is going to be working on Mechs, you may not see some of these guys ever again. Sergeant Crum takes you to main base, you park near a large building.

"Go down that hallway" Sergeant Crum points,
"Last door on the right. Good luck Specialist."

There's a man already in the room sitting at a table, he stand when you enter. He introduces himself as Staff Sergeant Mills, and asks you to take a seat. He begins a pitch, come to Colorado, the base there is starting a new Mech unit. Plenty of open space to work and test weapons. He says you will train and work with the biggest toys the army has to offer.

Mechs and explosives, sounds like fun.

"Take some time, think about it" He leaves.

First Sergeant Lett enters and takes a seat.

"I won't dick around with ya son, we could use a man like you, right here on base. We have already established a fine Mech unit, we can have you training right away with the finest pilots we have. I don't expect an answer right away, I know others are already giving you offers."

A man not in uniform enters next. He sits, and lights up a cigarette. He has five o'clock shadow and looks tired.

Must be in his thirties.

"I heard some stories about you, I liked enough of it to come all the way from Harvard."

He introduces himself as Captain Claire. Harvard is starting up it's own research and development department. I want to train you how to pilot a Mech myself. We have a nice little one set up right now we want to test. We are also working another as we speak. It would be great if you came and worked with the brightest minds this country has to offer. Also there are a lot of college babes. I'll let you think about it.

The main issue I have with Colorado is that, as a new and untested unit, it may more often than not be given the shaft by other more established units with more clout, or be used as a posting to shove all the incompetent commanders into so they can't do harm elsewhere.

Shiny equipment, we can get at Harvard as well, so the only real reason I can see to go to Colorado is to get combat experience as well as equipment.

That said, the votes will fall as they may.
>>
>>625713
That is why colorado is a better choice than harvard but i think both are a worse choice than knox

>>
>>625760

>>625767

Guys we are soldier for the mech devision. Now we could go to colorado and blow crap up, or stay on base training and hopefully train up our unit. Or we can go to harvard and try out new mechs and bring our buddy along later. Me I would like to train up our unit to be the best since we are going to be out in the field eventually(It is better to have the best people we can get and they are currently here).

Plus, we could grab people right out of the recruiting area when we spot good people.

Colorado it is! Writing

After thinking about it for a good amount of time, you decide.

"I'm going to Colorado. Mech weaponry is evolving. I will get to test them and help decide what future Mechs will be using."

"It's so far away from home."

"Yeah, but everyone needs to leave home sometime right?"

Elmore smiles, "Yeah, you are. Good luck friend."

"Good luck Elmore."

You have your answer. You tell Captain Claire and the First Sergeant you choice. They both wish you luck. Captain Clair says if you ever change your mind, write him. First Sergeant says there's always a home for you at Fort Knox.

Staff Sergeant Mills is very pleased to hear your answer. He tells you to pack your bags, you are leaving as soon as possible. As you get ready you wonder if all your affairs are in order before you leave.

As the trip goes on, you can't help but notice Staff Sergeant Mills likes talking about himself. But he is passionate and excited about forming a new Mech unit. He already has guys picked out to recruit he says.

"It sounds like you have a lot of say in how the unit is being built, what kind of ideas do you have?"

"OH, we are going big. We are working on fitting more weapons on a mech, without sacrificing mobility. We were basing some designs of american tanks. Mech's that stand upright on two legs are becoming more popular, but we are finding it easier to mount weapons on Mech's with four. If it works out right, we may be able to strike enemy strong hold from a distance and walk into battlefields and be effective."

That does sound good.

"You mentioned you had some guys you had in mind to recruit, who are they?"

"Well we already had some experienced pilots transfer from Fort Knox, they will train you to pilot this things. Army is asking soldiers if they want to re-class to the mech units, so I convinced some friends of mine to join."

I hope he doesn't play favorites.

"What about my training?"

"As I said before, we have some experienced pilots, 7 of them. You will be assigned to one of the seven squads. We are working on producing more mechs, so you may be a designated Pilot for a future squad. You will first be taking classes. We have some navigation courses you will traverse. Then you will practice using the weapons system on a mech. There will be a test at the end of your training."

The ride takes a little over an hour before you reach Bowman Field Airport. You grab your bag and before you head in, you turn and look. The Private that drove you is taking the Sergeants bags for him.

"Go wait over there Specalist, take my bag too Private Duncan. I'm going to see about our flight."

You get to an area with seats and plop down in one. Private Duncan drops Staff Sergeant Millers bags on the ground near you with out any regard for it's contents.

"What a fucking dick."

You almost don't hear it, but swear Private Duncan whispered it.
Before you can even respond to that, Duncan takes off.

Staff Sergeant makes his way back and says your flight will be leaving in a couple of hours, so stay put.

Two hours until my flight?

You check a clock and decide to get comfy. After thirty mins of trying to keep yourself occupied, you see a familiar face enter the airport.
It's Captain Claire. You feel bad about declining his offer, but Colorado is going to be great. You watch him purchase a ticket. You watch him flirt with the woman at the counter. He cracks some joke and the woman laughs. You think about your conversation from earlier and wonder if he really is an Officer.

The Captain grabs his ticket and gives the woman a wink, picks up his suitcase and walk your direction. He see's you and gives a large smile.

"Specalist Grant! It's good to see you again."

You stand in the position of attention, "Hello Captain."

"Relax, I just wanted to see how you are doing."

You tell him what's been going on and where you are going.

"That's great, you are going to do well over there."

Captain Claire checks his watch, "Well, I have 3 hours until my flight. Might take a nap, unless you have anything you want to talk about?"

You have heard of the Captain before you met him. He is one of the few Pilots that has actually seen combat.

"Can you tell me what it's like being a pilot?"

"OH man, it's great. Nothing like it. I've operated tanks before, but this is something different. The first Mech I used was some tank hybrid. It looked more tank than anything. I helped build it on base in Fort Knox. After that I ran some trials in Harvard. Great people there. I had help from students and other scientists from all over the world. I told them what I wanted to create and they helped me build it... Anyway, we took it over to Europe to get more input on it. Test ran it some more. While we over there I was given a chance to combat test it for the first time. Something was going down in Libya. Colonists where under attack and I was dispatched with some British troops to eliminate them and gain back control. I was over there for 3 months fighting radical rebels. They had somehow gotten hands on some weaponry, and a few Mechs. The Mechs over seas are a bit different. They aren't as armored, but they are faster. The pilot is usually exposed, but he has greater vision and reacts faster. They also favor using arms on their Mechs. They would use it to block small arms fire, but I learned to take out the legs, then they would be screwed. The last week... that was a blood bath."

(1/2)
>>
>>629214

"The prototype Mech could hold a crew of 3. We became real close during those couple of months. We had tracked down the rebels to some outpost, they were held up and we were ordered to destroy them all. We got some bad information and didn't know they had another Mech hiding in there. It was different from the others, all armor, covered in weapons. He destroyed our Mech, killed my crew and retreated when British soldiers started to overtake the outpost. Ever since then I've trained like a madman. Something is going on over there, it's going to be huge. Everything is going to change and I want to be ready."

Captain Claire looks serious for the first time, he is actually kind of scaring you. He snaps out of it.

"What else? Harvard yes! Like I said we are trying to polish this prototype we have, also in the middle of creating another. Would have been great if you came and helped. You won't have to dress in uniform everyday, I like blending in with the students and teachers there. I don't have as much funding as I like over there, so I really have to be creative."

Sounds nice. But working with the big guns sounds nice too.

"Can I talk to you about Staff Sergeant Mills?"

"Sure, go ahead."

You take a look around

"Is he always that cranky?"

"He is, but he knows his weapons. He is a decent pilot too, we have trained together in the past. No combat experience at all. I can't say we exactly get along though."
>>
Captain Claire is pretty easy to get along with, and you can't help but admire him.

You think back to graduation, the platoon getting letters from bases around the country. It was odd that you didn't receive an order to report to a station. Looking back you know now why you didn't.

"I did not."

I knew I wanted to try a Mech Quest, but do a spin on it. I was going to do some kind of Voltron, Power Rangers mix into it. The idea was to form a team for each part of the Big Robot/Mech, but went with this instead.

Staff Sergeant calls you.

"Listen Claire, the boy has made his choice. He's coming with me, I'm going to train him, and that's that!"

Holy crap, sweet baby Jesus.

You finally get to see the units Mech. The thing is huge.

"You like it huh? This bad boy is called Zeus, our latest model. We are the only squad that has him"

You are out in the mountains, middle of nowhere. The squad begins walking you through the weapons systems.

The main weapon on Zeus is a Modded M1918.
Fires 3 inch shells. It's loaded with chalk rounds as of now.

"On top right here, is our .50 cal machine gun. When we use this thing, you will swear that God himself came down to wreck everything in his path. Ammo, not chalk.

After hours of training and a lunch they decide to let you fire some of the weapons off.

Sergeant Norton hands you some binoculars,
"Can you see those targets down there? I want you to hit those."

You notice a tank furthest out, as you scan in you see 3 trucks near each other, and even closer you see human shaped targets, around 30 of them you think.

I don't want to play it safe and aim at the human targets, but that tank is way out there too.

I'll start with the trucks. You adjust the cannon for a few mins.

This looks good.
How would I know, I've never fired this thing before.
I just need to have it hit close.

Your heart races, and you fire. Thor shakes and jerks, and you wait. You hear cries and hollering from the crew, direct hit! You exit and look down range, all three trucks are now the color orange.

Your confidence is greatly raised, you enter back in and fire more rounds and get a feel for it.

Time to use the .50 caliber.

Will begin shortly!
>>
The rest of your week is filled with some classes and a routine of exercise. You hardly have any free time, and when you do it's spent doing laundry and writing your old platoon members and family.

A squad meeting is called, and Sergeant Norton gives you the weeks schedule. You will be navigating the surrounding terrain in Zeus, then you will do a time trial. You can spend the rest of the week at the firing range if you want after that.

Week 2

Pick one to fast forward to.

>A. Mech Terrain Course and Time Trial.

You spend an entire day going different grades of hills, you go through thick mud, almost getting stuck. You are given tips on going through bodies of water. Zeus jerks you around the cock pit, but by the end you get a better feel for it and are able to move your body with the Mech.

The next day you are sore and nervous about the time trial.

Sergeant Norton give you a map of the course and explains the task.

"You're starting point is right here, quarter mile from where we are. You are to Pilot and navigate your way... here. Try not to break my Mech. You begin in 45 mins, Corporal Werner will be riding along in case there are any problems."

You move Zeus to the starting point, and exit to the top of the Mech. You plot some points on your map, and try to check the terrain in the far distance. It doesn't look like this will be easy.

Corporal Werner come peaks out the hatch,
"We ready?"

>Find the best path to the end (77)

You give it a look, and find what you think is the best path to take.

"Yeah let's get going!"

You get back in and sit yourself in the cockpit.
Zeus comes to life and starts moving down your path.

You travel 5 miles just fine, but come to your first real obstacle. There is a giant hill in your way, very steep. Looks like it wants to go completely vertical.

You check your map, it's a straight shot past here. There are some woods and then a river.

God that's steep.
I can make it.
I don't know...

The Corporal yells from another part of the Mech, "Well? What we doing?"

>A. Sit tight, this is going to get bumpy! (64)

You charge the hill, and Corporal Werner begins to yell.

Maybe this is a bad idea?

"GRANT! DON'T DO THIS!"

Yeah, might be a bad idea.

"Sit tight, this is going to get bumpy!"

"GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT!"

You hit the hill hard, almost flipping Zeus on to it's back. You act fast and shift gears when you feel it's the right time. So close, you almost fail, but make it over. The mech is on it's hind "legs and comes down hard onto all far, rocking everyone.

"You crazy sonna bitch! What the hell were you thinking!?"

Corporal Werner continues yelling at you, calling you every name he can think of, some sound made up. He's so upset. When he finally takes a break to get some air you try to calm him down.

"Relax Werner, it's a shortcut."

"You're a fucker Grant, no more of those."

You check the map and move on. Got some forest next.

When you do reach it, you hop out and take another look. There is a faint path going West and East.

I can take that to go around, should be a smooth ride.
It's so much longer though. Wastes time.
I can go through the woods too.
It's so dense, I would have to go right over the trees, knocking them down.

"Just take the path Grant.", Werner almost sounds like he is pleading.

"Sorry Werner, we are not going around."

"We're not turning back are we?"

"Afraid not."

Pedal to the metal, and you are off and you hit the first tree in your path and knock it down with little resistance. The noise though, so loud.
You can still hear Werner screaming. You make it through, but was it in one piece?

I should check outside to see if there is any visible damage.

"Grant, what the fuckkk!"

As you climb out you respond to Werner.

You get the feeling that Corporal Werner does not like you. You do an outside inspection, everything seems fine, except for the missing paint. There are some branches and such stuck to Zeus, but nothing that threatens to harm anything.

You continue on your way and find the river.

If I get past this, the end is only a mile away!
The river looks deep.
Looks like the current is strong.

You decide to check the map and see if there is another way around.

You decide to check out that bridge, it's not that far out of the way. When you arrive you get out and see if there is anything obviously wrong with it.

You don't see any damage, but there is a notice stuck to a beam. The bridge is has been condemned and will be torn down 3 weeks from now.

DO NOT CROSS!

Hm, well, ok.
But I don't see any damage.
Can it hold while I cross?

Y'know guys, since we're such a good soldier and pilot and gunner and leader, it's obvious what's gonna happen.
>>
"Bridge is down, too bad. Guess we find another away around."

"Nope."

"Excuse me?"

"We will cross the bridge. It will hold."

"Grant, for all that is good and holy, please don't. We could really be hurt, or die."

You turn and look the Corporal dead in the eyes.
"Relax Werner, it's a shortcut."

Werner doesn't scream this time and you floor it, the bridge creaks and moans and you begin to feel worried, you shift through gears and focus on reaching the end. You swear you hear the bridge begin to give way but nothing happens.

The bridge holds and you continue on your way. You reach the end, took less than 3 hours.

"This is it", Werner gets out and shoots a flair into the air. "They should be here an hour or so."

As you two wait, Werner says he has to give a report on how you did.

Being the new guy, it's important to look good.
You just put Werner through hell, he will probably bad mouth you when he gives his report.

After thinking it over you try to talk him out of doing that.

"Man, that was some run right? What was our time? 2 hours 57 mins? That has got to be a record... what is the record?"

"5 hours, 13 mins."

"You know, we will probably be recognized for this. That's an amazing time, we crushed it. I'm sure we will get promotion points for that. Sergeant Norton will also get to brag that his squad now holds the record, one that may never be beaten. It's all thanks to US, that this will happen.

Werner listens with intent and begins to comprehend what you are getting at.

"Alright Grant, I will give a good report, don't worry."

"Thank's Werner, you're a good sport."

After mins of silence Werner says,

"I didn't know a Mech could move like that"
