"Gughhfhg."

"Jack!" A tiny figure pulls at your coat. "Jack! You have to hurry! Kayda's in trouble!"

"GHhthghugh. Oh! Yosh, Lowise. Goodye seeye in ye morning."

"Jack, it's four in the afternoon!"

"This isn't working." A larger, brown-haired figure stands next to her. "Looks like we might need more drastic measures."

Ye are Jarck Albater, goodseyed sail-man, wondrous rinnie-tube, and ye make good convo in the hanvo!
Aye, mate, that kinda stings thar, little gorl.

Louise's hands sparkle, and every pat on your shoulder feels like a tiny bee-sting.

"I said UP! UP! UP! UP! UP! UP! UP! UP!" A fizzling pop echoes across your body with each and every touch.

But sheys' a little too yong to get ye up. Ahahah, if only Tuile'd be here right now. She'd get it.

"Louise, step aside."
The taller woman looms over you with an unlabeled bottle.

With a pour, at least a quarter of it goes straight into your mouth-
"YEEEEEEAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-"

You immediately jolt upward, and Camille proceeds to douse you with water.

"Rise and shine, Jack!" Camille is smiling, "Looks like you have to go be a big hero, again."
"Ugh." You cough, the feeling of whatever that was still lingers in your throat, "What the hell happened?"

"We had a talk about things, you drunk a whole bottle of liquor, and then you fell down the stairs." Camille smirks, "So an average afternoon, with you."

"Then I got here, and you wouldn't get UP!" Louise pouts, "This is important! There's like a ring inside of Kayda!"

Your head turns to the little firecracker.
"A what?"
"A ring! There's a ring inside of Kayda! Atsuko thinks there's a demon inside of it!"

"Did she, err, swallow it?"
"No! It's attached to something inside of her!"

Camille glances in your direction for just a moment, and you suddenly realize that she doesn't know what Louise is talking about.

"Aye, so." You stand up, and deftly reach for your soaked hat. "-ere's a ring, like, a metal one, inside of Kayda. It may er may not have somethin' to do with demons. What're we gonna do?"
"I DON'T KNOW, I WOULDN'T ASK YOU IF I KNEW!"

"Louise, please." Camille picks a bag up, it appears to have some kind of insignia on the side. "We're going to go deal with it right now, so please stay here."

"I really don't get to go?!" Louise seems hurt.
"Louise, it's not about that, it's-"
"Listen, aye have faith in ye. Aye really do." You pat her head. Lightly, a tiny bolt arcs from her hair and into your hand. She must not be very happy about this.

"It's that the armory is a very small space, and ye don't need to be shockin' us in the ass when we tryin' to work on Kayda. Alright?"

"Y-yes! That's exactly right!" Camille picks up on your line of reasoning. "The armory is very cramped, and you're better off not crowding the adults when we're trying to fix her. One wrong move can mean trouble!"

"..Okay." Louise sighs in defeat.

"Hey, kiddo, don't look so down." You kneel down to her eye-level. "After this, aye'll take ye all out for pastries or somethin'."
"Really?!"
"Aye, my treat."

She hops in place after that, but then slows down her enthusiasm.
"..Promise you'll fix Kayda."
"Of course we'll fix Kayda!" Camille grins, "We've always fixed everything before, riight?"

"..Mostly." Louise pouts, "Just be sure to fix this one thing, okay?!"

"Absolutely! Now, go find, um, Akiko and see what's she's up to. You might be able to help her with something!"

"Okay." She turns to leave the bar, and Camille turns back to you.

"That was a close one."
"Aye, feelin' a little guilty about it, too."
"Well, don't worry about it. Let's just get going."
"Aye, let's."

--

Here's the castle.

It seems normal enough, mostly.

Why is the armory door propped open?

Inside, you see Atsuko.

"Aye, Ice Lass." You approach, and her head snaps in your direction.

She's making various hand gestures to you, one is a wave, another is a 'sit down', the last one is quiet.

What does she mean by that?

>Approach anyway, she's just being silly.

You don't believe there is anything to be scared of around the castle.

At the same time; Atsuko looks very alarmed right now. Almost as if something has recently changed, and she's not entirely sure how to deal with it at the moment.

So, like a good little hero, you sit down.
Camille, taking the hint, sits down as well.

Atsuko's face mixes between a rush of emotions. Her coldness is suddenly replaced with fear, and then relief, and then-

Slowly, Fritelli sneaks her way out of the room. She holds Aligot's hand, and they slowly start to move from the propped open door.
Atsuko, on the other hand, doesn't move. She's as stiff as a board and as flat as one, too. Maybe that last thought was a little mean, but you couldn't help yourself.

Slowly, she starts to creak toward the door, but freezes just before she can get any closer.

"(What the hell?)"
"(Shh!)"

There's an eerie orange glow eminating from the armory. It grows with intensity, and seems like its going to light the entire room up. Atsuko remains frozen in place, and you're almost tempted to dash toward her.

That's when she appears from around the corner.

It's Kayda, and she appears to be completely out of her mind. Her eyes stare a thousand yards into the distance, and a brilliant aura of flames dance on her skin. She doesn't appear to be in pain, but looks can be deceiving.

"Kayda!" You hear Yuuki call out to her from somewhere. Yet, Kayda doesn't notice or care.

Slowly, Kayda starts to walk down the hallway. Fritelli jumps to her feet and starts barking orders to both maids and guards.

Kayda is going somewhere, but you don't entirely know where.

You look toward Camille, and nod.

She immediately rushes toward Atsuko, and you continue shadowing Kayda.

Something is wrong, something is very wrong. Fortunately, she doesn't seem to be attacking anything.
For now.

You slowly draw near Aligot, and brace next to him.

"(What the hell is goin' on 'ere?)"

"(There's a ring, inside of Kayda. Its effects is causing a spell someone cast on her to go haywire.)"

"(Where's she goin'?)"

"(Don't know.)"

Kayda slowly paces further and further down the hallway. The assembled guards quickly jump out of her way, and cautiously watch.

"(How'd she get a ring in 'er? Where is it?)"
"(Above her collarbone. Yuuki went to ask her summoner about it, but we don't think its any more than a few weeks old. It doesn't appear to have much, if any, scar tissue around it.)"

This is getting far too weird. Are you sure that you're still not face-down drunk on the bar floor? That seems like a more likely explanation.

"(Whard we do?)"

"(I don't know, this has all the signs of mind-control. So I guess try to stop her?)"

Just as Aligot whispers that, one of the less-inclined guards steps out in front of Kayda. Then he attempts to grab her.
Without moving anything but her arms; she picks him up by the hand and throws him against the wall.

Yikes.

This could get pretty bad if you had to have a fight in here.

She approaches the one door you were hoping that she would not be moving toward.
The one that leads to the dungeon.

"Whar the hell would she want in the dungeon?" You don't even bother trying to hide yourself, now. Instead, you stand up and slowly start trying to follow on foot.

"Jack! Stay back!" Yuuki leaps past you. "We can negate her fire with ice, and then-"

"Yuuki, No!" Aligot grabs her spear, and pitifully attempts to aim it away from Kayda. "If you freeze her, the ring might shatter in her neck!"
"A- what?!"

"Yuuki, stop, why the dungeon. Is there something in the dungeon?" Fritelli grabs Yuuki's shoulder.
"I don't know, but- Clair has taken Greta and disappeared." Yuuki growls.

"What?!"
"Clair is gone! She disappeared earlier. I don't know what her game is."

You feel a sinking in your stomach. Typically from the realization that you understand exactly what is going on, and how bad of a situation you're in because of it.
Reaching into your pocket, you take out a flask.

"Can never trust a bear." You bring the flask to your lips. "Aye think Clair wants the king's head, next. She'd wanted that since the day we met 'er."
"The king-" Yuuki's eyes flash with the realization.

>Fortunately, aye don't think there's much she can do to him, so maybe we should just sit this one out.
>We should try to stop her before she heads into the dungeon and makes fighting even harder.

"'Ey, we need to stop her before she goes into the dungeon. It's gonna be ten times harder fightin' her down there than up here."

"Fighting?!" Yuuki nearly jumps out of her skin.

Then, she moves in front of you, arms extended on both side.
"No no! We're not fighting Kayda! She's hurt, and she's very confused right now. We should not focus on trying to hurt her, we're trying to save-"

"Stand back!"

Before Yuuki can even finish her sentence, a white streak moves past the two of you and confronts Kayda!
It's hard to tell who it is, but it's covered in a layer of clay. It sticks to him like a layer of armor.

He immediately moves in front of the dungeon door, and slams his foot down. Spikes and rocks erupt from the castle floor and block the path.

For his efforts, he's awarded with a blast of fire to the back. His clay-armor quickly heats up to the reaction, and cooks into fine stone on his skin.

"Dorje?!" Yuuki yells, "What are you doing!? I thought you were going with Louise!"
"I didn't! Quick! Get the ring out!"

"I don't know how!" Yuuki yells.

"Okay! I have a plan!" Dorje shouts, "If we encase her in stone, then we can surgically remove it!"
"If you encase her in stone, you might kill her!"

"I- I probably won't!"

This isn't going great.

Worse yet, you think you see your bride-to-be walking down the hallway. She has a puzzled look on her face, and seems unaware of the situation playing out.

"Yuuki! Dorje! Heads up!" You yell, and then jump toward Kayda.

She turns her fiery attention toward you, and Dorje immediately moves to restrain her. Flames lick and dance across the outer skin of clay he has protected himself with.

You concentrate on your training you had with Aligot and Fritelli. Then, you form something in your hands.
It's an orb of water, large enough to encase a watermelon.

You throw it at Kayda's knees, and it sticks just like a ball of sap.

"Yuuki, Ice! Dorje, Clay!"

Yuuki wastes no time throwing a blue lightning bolt at the sphere. It immediately turns to ice around Kayda's legs.

Kayda, realizing that she's trapped, starts to glow red again.

That is, until Dorje stamps his foot on the floor. An entire layer of sand moves upward from between the stone bricks, and covers the bubble of ice.

Kayda erupts in flames, but the ice doesn't melt. Instead, the layer of earth covering the ice block starts to glow an angry red.

Dorje uses this moment to unhand the fiery lass, and hobbles to safety.

"How long will this last?!"
"Not long, we needa figure out a way te calm 'er down."

"How do we do that?!"

"Aye, err, dunno."

".. I might know." Yuuki fumbles around in her pocket.

"Aye?"

"I got a ring, a matching one. If I can calm Kayda down, then maybe we can try to get the ring out."

Yuuki slips the ring on, and then closes her eyes.

You, aren't hearing anything. The entire room has fallen silent. All eyes are on Yuuki.
Maybe not all eyes, you have at least one eye on the flask in your pocket.

Kayda's flames start to subside, slowly. Whatever Yuuki is doing; it seems to be working.
You hear someone sniffle, and your focus snaps back to the young lady with the ring.

Gently, tears are rolling down Yuuki's cheeks. She sniffles gently, as the ring comes down to her chest.

"K-Kayda is f-fine for now. I- I think she's hurt, though."

"Aye, Aligot. Any ideas?"
"None."

"Then-"

"What is going on?" Tuile finally ushers her bodyguards away, and steps forward.

"Tuile, this is important. Kayda has a magic ring in her neck."

"In her neck? Like, she swallowed it?"

"No, it's been implanted somehow. We thinkin' teleport magic. Do ye know anyone in the castle who is good with teleportation?"

"I.. really don't-"

"Aye, try te think of somethin'. If Kayda loses control again, she's gonna go on a rampage."

Tuile blinks, and then sighs.
"Do you know where the ring is?"
"Aye, in her neck, above her collarbone. There's a painting of it in the armory."

"What does the ring look like?"
"It's on Yuuki's finger."

Patiently, as if she has all the time in the world, she saunters over to Yuuki.
Gently, Yuuki takes time from dabbing the tears from her eyes to hand her ring to Tuile.

"What'cha thinkin', Lass?"
"It's a ring in her neck, right? Let me go look at the painting."
"Lass, we don't have time for this!"

Tuile doesn't listen, and instead goes into the armory.
What is with her?! She doesn't normally act this way when things are serious.

Kayda suddenly bursts into flames again! Yuuki goes to put the ring on, but she forgot that she handed that to Tuile!

Dorje goes to cover her with sand again, but is effortlessly blasted back by a wave of heat. You quickly usher in a wave of water to pacify the burning around her ankles, and Kayda freezes it. A layer of frost over a layer of clay.

The burning girl calms down, and her flames subside.

Tuile returns from the armory, cloth in hand.

"This one, right? The little white smear?"
"Aye, Tuile, but please give Yuuki back the ring."

"No no, hold on." Tuile states, without a hint of worry.

Without even caring that Kayda is currently not quite in her mind; she approaches her. You're right behind her just in case something happens.

"What are ye thinkin'?"

"I'm thinking." She smiles. "That I'm going to do the operation."
"What?"

"Jack, Dorje, hold Kayda tight. Yuuki, tell her that she's going to be all-right."

"What're ye sayin' Lass?"

You splash some water on Kayda, and then grab onto her arm.
Yuuki on the other hand; completely ignores Tuile's commmand and is focusing on something else: The fact that Tuile is glowing.

"NO!" She screams, "DON'T HURT HER!"
"I'm not going to-"

You immediately let Kayda go and restrain Yuuki. She has drawn mere inches away from Tuile, and her face is that of worry and anger.

You're confused.

Okay, so Tuile reached into Kayda, and took the ring out? Yet, Kayda isn't bleeding or anything.
Hold on, she said this was a property of the barrier, and that it transcends physical barriers.
So, The barrier isn't physical but can transcend physical barriers and then repair the barrier and that lets it take physical barriers out but it's also a barrier and can bend barriers that the physical-
Oh hey, alcohol.

You take the flask out of your coat pocket and take a very, very long drink.

What were you thinking about again?

Barriers, right!
Tuile just bent a barrier around the physical barrier to get the ring which the physical barrier was protecting, but she needed the barrier to create a barrier around the barrier and stop the physical barrier from-

Oh, your flask is empty. Fortunately, there is still your hip flask.

Where were you?

Right, drinking. You were drinking.

"Jack?" Tuile seems concerned. "Are you okay? You didn't say anything, you just started taking flasks out of your coat."

"That was.. AMAZING Lass!"
"Ah, uh-" Tuile blushes slightly, "I'm glad you liked it.

"No, I'm serious, Tuile. You just saved Kayda's life AND ye looked cool doin' it." You grasp her hand, "Yer a real natural!"

"I- uh. Thanks!" She seems like she wants to say something else, but smiles instead.

"'Ey, later promise to show me that again, aye?"
"Yeah, sure! I'd be glad to. Where do you want to see it?"

You smirk at her, "In bed, of course."

Tuile's face rushes with pink, and you turn toward Kayda. It's time to see if the lil' Lass held up through all of that.

You approach Kayda, and notice something important.
Kayda's awake!

"I'm sorry.. I'm sorry." Kayda seems to whimper, time and time again.
"Stop.. please." Yuuki whispers back. She clings tightly to Kayda's body. So tightly that it seems impossible to separate the two.

Dorje continues staring; confused on what to do next.
You, of course, know exactly what you're going to do.

You're going to go make bearskin rugs for the Shrine.

Everyone, I know I had a dozen plus more updates last thread, but last week did not work out so well because of it. I may pick back up and do a few more updates, but right now I just want to sleep.

Everyone, thanks. I won't post archive until I'm certain that I'm not continuing. Please let me know what you thought of it. Have a nice night.
