You are no sorcerer, blessed with magic without the need to learn, nor are you a warlock, trading a soul for the easy path. And yet you don't have any formal magical education. You've been self-taught, learning from spellbooks and textbooks at your own pace. According to the law of the land, you can't call yourself a wizard. You're a Magic-User.
Your self-education took a long time, but you're as capable as any of the professionally trained wizards. You've studied a good amount of almost every area of magic well enough to engage in the basic practice of all of them, but you focused mostly on two topics.

>Character Generation
You specialized in two of these fields of magic. What were they? The most popular option will be your major field of study. The second most popular will be your minor field of study.

>Combat/Cursing
>Healing/Blessing
>Divination/Meditation
>Illusion/Psionics
>Evocation/Invocation

Your major areas of study were illusion and psionics, and your minor areas of study were transmutation and alchemy. While you're not great at flinging massive fireballs around, you can change the minds of men and make them suffer from intense hallucination. Otherwise, you enjoy working with your hands, changing the material structure of objects and crafting potions to aid you and others.
You'll be going to the national magi registry today to declare yourself an independent magic-user. You'll have to bring your staff with you to demonstrate some of your magical ability, as well as various materials. Looking over your staff, you reflect to yourself...

Isn't your staff cute? You've always been rather effeminate, rightly so, as you're a girl. You pick up your staff and cast a quick spell to test yourself: a flaming purple ball appears in the air. It's a test of your illusion magic.
It looks like you're on point today! Passing the magi registry exam should be no problem. You've seen much less impressive displays passed by the registry board.
Part of the registry requires you to bring a familiar with you. What kind of familiar do you have?

Lizardon the lizard is your familiar. He's served you well, and due to his ability to blend into his surroundings, you've been especially good at the invisibility spells in illusion magic. Your familiar and you have a telepathic connection, and you can communicate with him at any time -- as well as see out of his eyes and hear from his ears.
Lizardon looks up at you as you put him in a small traveling cage. Looks like you're almost ready to head out to the registry. but first, you've got to chug one of your potions. It'll give you a better shot at winning!
Pick one:
>Potion of Charisma
>Potion of Magical Power
>Potion of Hallucinations
>Potion of Xanax
>>
>>64455
No fucks given let's drink the Hallucination potion

Charisma all the way. You can easily flirt with other members of society and since you're a cute girl you'll get whatever you want.

You chug the potion of charisma. Wow! You feel a lot more confident and attractive. Lizardon climbs up on your arm. He clearly doesn't like the traveling cage, as he's already found a way out of it.
It looks like you're ready to get going. How do you want to get to the registry? You'd usually take the backroads, the fastest way, but there have been a lot of muggings lately. You could hire a carriage, but that's usually around 15gp. Or you could go through the shopping district -- it's a longer walk, but you might get some shopping done.

>Walk through the shopping district in Magic City.
>Hire a carriage.
>Take the backroads.

You have 250gp.
>>
Backroads, fuck the muggers you could use your illusions to make them experience a hell they can't even fathom
>>

Shopping district.

>>
Train your magic by going through the backroads. People come out, you pull some trickery to fool them. It would be a great way to practice as you go to the exam, albeit a bit dangerous.

You decide to walk through the backroads. No mugger is going to stop you from getting to the registry! You could even practice your magic on them!
That what you thought. Then a drow wearing a cloak jumped out of an alleyway with a dagger pointed in your direction.
"Your money or your life!" The highwayman calls out, eyeing the coin pouch on your belt. He's a rugged looking fellow with a crooked nose, obviously broken many times.

After some walking along without any further disturbance, you reach the registry.
"Next!" An old woman calls from behind a counter, ringing a small bell. The line isn't too long today.
After a few more "Next!"s, you get called up to the counter.
"What's your name, dearie?" She asks absentmindedly.

So, do you need higher rolls for your secondary magic to have better outcomes, or are you equally versed in your primary and secondary magic?
>>
I like Tasha.
>>
>>64841

Your secondary magic is given a bonus. Your primary magic is given a slightly higher bonus.
>>
>>64852
So... you can perform the other types, but need really high rolls to pull them off?
>>
>>64858
Not that big of a difference. Think of most of it as +0, transmutation/alchemy as +1, and illusion/psionics as +2.

"My name's Blinx," you say.
"Alright Blinx, just fill out this paperwork." She hands you a strange sheet asking you a whole bunch of information. You fill it out and then hand it to her.
"Thanks, darlin," she says. "You'll want to go to the third portal on your left." You walk down the hall and go into the portal.

You appear in a large room with a single desk in it and a man sitting at the desk.
"Blinx," he says, "You're asking to become officially recognized as a Magic-User?"
"Yes," you say.
"I see you've recently reached a level 1 status in accordance with the rules as written. That's good. I'd like to see a demonstration of some of your abilities. Show me a spell."

>Choose a cantrip or level 1 spell from your spellbook.

What is a cantrip?

Also, transmute wood to stone. Change his desk to stone to show off your skills.

I think transmuting an entire desk to stone is beyond our abilities.
We are only a level 1 Magic-User.

>>64926

Depends on the spell.

>>64927
Fine, the top of the desk then.

You point your staff at the man's desk. He is shocked to see the wooden desk turn into a sleek stone desk, slowly, as if it were becoming some kind of stone-age piece of office furniture.

"That was great!" He exclaims. "I think I can pass you! What kind of opportunities were you hoping to take advantage of through our organization?"

>Membership in the Mage's Guild, so you can do work for and study in the Guild.
>Regularly assigned adventures.
>Additional party members to help with non-regulated adventuring.
>A starting pack for an adventuring magic-user.
>>
Starting pack, we should stay independent of the guild
>>
starting pack, we can manage the rest on our own
>>
>>64980
Do we owe anything to the guild though? Also what are the limits of the guild?

Maybe we choose extra party members then tell our thief friend to rob them (because the others don't know that you and the thief are friends).
>>
>>64980
Sorry, I messed up the question. What would be the down-side of joining the guild? Would we have to listen to what they say no matter what?
>>
>>64998
I'd assume the guild has regulations and fees in exchange for guidance and aid.
>>
and what part has the lizard played? we should give him some kind of power by now
>>
>>65002
Do you think we could leave after our thief "friend" robs the extra party members? If not, I'd go with the starting pack.

"I'd like a starting pack so I can begin my adventuring!" You say.
"Not looking to work for the Guild, eh?" He says. "Well, that's alright. Some day you may come back to join. Here, this is the standard issue for females." He hands you a full pink backpack.

It looks like you've officially become a Magic-User! Countless adventures stand before you!

But not tonight. This is the end of this part of the quest.
