Your name is Keiichi Hirayama. You are seventeen years old and live in Japan, Asia. Your hair is black and you have a fondness for tracksuits of all colors. Your current occupation could only be described as an ordinary, male high school student. If your future self were to write a letter home describing today’s events, it would probably start something like this:

>Dear Mom and Dad, it’s so good to hear from you both. It makes me really relieved that everything is well back at home. Thanks for the chocolates too; my sister and I really enjoyed them. The city we’re living in is as busy as ever. The traffic is a real pain and the crowds are near impenetrable but we’ve long since gotten used to it. We could do with more fresh vegetables, though.

>I can’t believe I’m about to start my final year of high school. It’s crazy how time has flown so quickly. It almost seems yesterday I was gazing up at the school gates, wondering what the hell we had gotten ourselves into. I promise I’ll work hard in all my studies and take advantage of any opportunities that come my way. That’s what Airi is basically doing, anyway. If I don’t shape up she’s going to start complaining again.

>As for what I did today…well, I fought a giant fire-breathing monster chicken!

You wish you were kidding. Reality states otherwise.

You are, at present, staring down a giant fire-breathing monster chicken. It’s as big as a freight truck. It’s tall enough to rival a giraffe. An aura of fire, an orange coat of heat and pain, coats its milky-brown plumage. Its mere presence is enough to set alight the space you are in, which appears to be a standard fast food join viewed through the eyes of a drug addict. Somewhere in the distance, a whole heap of plastic goods are doused in flame and foul, black poisonous smoke fills the air.

You gape at the sight. Slowly, the giant chicken gazes back at you. There is unspoken murder within those eyes. It opens its beak and screams, a wail so shrill it threatens to break glass. It then takes a step forwards you. The ground quails beneath its weight.

Sweat is dripping from the sides of your head. Now that you have been caught up to speed with the situation, what will you do?

>Fight the giant chicken, because you are obviously qualified for this.
>Attempt to negotiate with the giant chicken. It should be reasonable, right?
>Agree with every nerve in your body and run away.
>Stand and gaze at awe in the giant chicken. Doesn’t it look majestic?

That last part is of dubious validity, but okay. Before you take out a weapon, the chicken extends its beak open. It spits out a ball of fire straight in your direction. You curse loudly and dive to the right, placing yourself behind a set of garbage cans. You look over at the spot where you were and get the sight of a nasty, blackened scorch mark for your trouble. You gulp.

The chicken then opens its mouth again.

“MGRONALDS!” It screams, in a voice that sounds like the median of every generic fantasy movie villain in existence.

“Holy shit,” You mutter to yourself, “It can talk!”

You then realize what it had exactly said, and stare.

“TEXAS FRIED CHICKEN!” The chicken warbles, shouting to you and the burning furniture. “HUNGRY JILL’S! METRO SANDWICHES!” Enraged, it slams its feet on the ground, detaching a couple of ceiling lights into a heap of broken glass.

“THE NAMES OF THOSE HUMAN FAST FOOD CHAINS…THEY FILL ME WITH SHEER, PASSIONATE RAGE!”

This is a bad day or a seriously awful dream, you think to yourself. The unfortunate truth is, it’s both at once.

“HUMAN!” Oh, it’s talking to you. You can tell by the cone of heat radiating from its beady eyes, threatening to ignite your tracksuit. “ARE YOU AWARE OF WHO I AM?”

“No…” You reply, more to yourself than anything. Nevertheless, the giant fire breathing chicken hears it.

“I AM A THE SPIRIT OF ALL CHICKENS WHO HAVE SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF FAST-FOOD CORPORATIONS!”

“Oh my god…”

“AND YOU! YOU, HUMAN BOY, WHO DINED ON A BAZINGER SPICY BURGER BOX WITH THE HUMAN GIRL AT TEXAS FRIED CHICKEN LAST NIGHT, SHALL SUFFER MY RIGHTEOUS WRATH! SUFFER THE COMBINED PAIN OF MILLIONS OF TORTURED CHICKENS!”

It flaps its wings and a small inferno rushes towards you. Gritting your teeth, you leap out from your position and make a mad dash towards the serving counter. Pillars of fire, leaping from the ground like the products of burst fire hydrants, threaten to sear you into ashes. Your soles are melting. Embers trail on the tips of hair strands. This is going to result in a lot of time at the clothes shop with your sister; therefore, it kinda pisses you off.

You duck behind the counter and rush towards the chicken. A fireball grazes past you and hits a cash register. It falls to the ground in a heap of goop.

“FACE ME, COWARD! I KNOW THAT HUMANS ARE WEAK CREATURES THAT ENJOY TORTURING POOR DEFENSELESS BIRDS, BUT AT LEAST STAND YOUR GROUND WHEN YOU DIE!”

With your back up against a broken soda machine and no rescue in sight, you do what every adolescent Japanese boy would do in this situation: pull out a gun and aim it at the chicken.

Why does a Japanese boy have a gun, specifically a Remington Model 870 shotgun—one of the most common firearms in the world? That is a very good question, one that you can’t be bothered answering right now because the chicken is stomping towards you.

It looks at the shotgun in your hands and scoffs.

“YOU BELIEVE THAT TINY PIECE OF METAL WILL SAVE YOU? I HAVE BEST SPATULA, FORK AND FRYING GRILL! HUMANITY’S MACHINES ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO THE WRATH OF—”

You squeeze the trigger, ejecting buckshot.

The air in front of you seems to explode. A wave of metal pellets smash straight into the giant chicken’s torso, scattering meat and splattering blood. It howls and slams the side of the wall in its pain.

“THAT…THAT WAS A GUN! A GUN THAT IS USED BY HUMANS TO SHOOT DEADLY BULLETS! BULLETS!” The chicken repeats. “ONE OF MY MANY WEAKNESSES! HOW DID YOU KNOW?”

“They’re shotgun pellets…” You mutter to yourself as you pump the shotgun and fire again. Four fifths of the pellets strike the target this time. It’s good enough, you think to yourself. There is someone you know who would be unsatisfied with this result, but you don’t want to think about her right now. The sizzling of exposed chicken guts in the burning restaurant is helping.

“YOU… YOU DARE TO HARM ME!” The giant chicken roars. “I WAS GOING TO SHOW YOU MERCY HUMAN, BUT I’VE HAD IT UP TO NOW!”

It scrapes its feet against the ground and takes a bow. In an instant, the chicken is no longer on the opposite end of the restaurant. It’s actually several metres in front of you, about to ram your body with its burning flesh!

“Shit!” You pick yourself from your position and run like mad. Around the side, past the barricaded emergency exit and over the counter with a vault. Mere seconds later, the kitchen is consumed in a torrent of heat, melting metal into scrap and charring all the frozen fries. Something detonates, causing an explosion that sends shrapnel and plastic flying your way.

You take aim and fire into the chaos. No dice; the chicken emerges unharmed. The flames surrounding it are brighter and hotter than ever. The murderous feeling it’s radiating is like the suppressing fire of a light machine gun.

This could be…actually pretty bad for you. Damn toxic spirits and their completely insane mindsets!

“FOR YOU,” the chicken announces, summoning a particularly large wad of fire in its open beak “EATING A 20-BOX OF MGRONALDS CHICKEN NUGGETS MIGHT’VE BEEN A WEDNESDAY, BUT FOR US CHICKENS IT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF OUR LIIIIIVES!”

"That doesn't make any sense!" You yell. The words have no effect. The chicken is mere moments away from conjuring its biggest fireball yet.

Then the roof cracks and collapses on it.

You can only watch as the chicken’s head is buried beneath several kilograms of plaster, wood and…a scorched vending machine? Before you can process that last detail, a girl leaps down from the hole in the roof. Long brown hair, a black girls’ school uniform and a white scarf. In her hands is a curved blade, which is pinned straight through the head of what appears to be a smoldering, yellow chick. She yanks the blade out and the chick below her crumbles into dust.

“Onii-chan!” The girl, your sister, cries. “Are you alright?”

“Took you long enough, Airi!” You shout, smiling.

“Sorry, I was caught up by some familiars. They popped out of the walls and tried to surround me. Good thing I beat them all, huh?” She turns around and stares at the giant chicken, who is covered in dust and shaking its head. “Is that the boss chicken over there?”

“Get into cover first!” You snarl, dragging your sister over to the back of the restaurant, behind a row of plastic couches. “And yeah, you’re right. That’s the leader over there. We take it out and this whole toxic realm is going to disappear. Then this stupid job is over.”

Airi nods. “I understand. With the two of us together, it shouldn’t be a problem.”

You run a trembling hand through your hair. “It’s hardy, though. Probably got a lot of stamina. I fired at it twice with my shotgun and it’s still standing.”

“…you’re using the metal ammunition, right?”

“Yes! Of course I am! Why wouldn’t I use metal ammunition here?”

“Just checking!” Your sister exclaims. “So, um, what weapons do you have right now?”

It’s a good question. You are carrying several weapons with you right now. They are all firearms, which is rather unusual for a kid your age. You also have their ammunition as well. It’s only due to your ‘magic art’ that you can carry all of them without them weighing down your back.

“Remington 870, Howa Type 89, M32A1.” You answer.

She stares at you, eyebrow raised. “Excuse me?”

You sigh. “A shotgun, an assault rifle and a grenade launcher. Sheesh, I thought I explained this to you. What do you have?”

“Just my blade and some throwing knives.” She replies, showing them for good measure. “My legs aren’t damaged, so I’m still pretty fast. What should we do, then?”

You consider this carefully.

>Shoot grenades at it and then rush forward in the resulting chaos.
>Fire your rifle at it and have Airi sneak around the back while the chicken is distracted.

You equip your assault rifle. “Airi, I’m going to fire at it. While it’s distracted, you sneak around and slash it up.”

“I’ll aim for its vitals, then. It’s a good plan, onii—”

“YOU THINK YOU CAN HIDE FROM ME, HUMAN? I KNOW YOU ARE BEHIND THOSE PLUSH SEATS OVER THERE. YOU HAVE BROUGHT ANOTHER HUMAN WITH YOU TOO!” It’s the damn giant chicken again. Airi points to herself and mouths the words ‘Me?’. You roll your eyes and shrug.

“THAT RED SCARF IS RATHER NICE, I HAVE TO ADMIT. BUT WHATEVER BONUSES THE GIRL GETS FROM THAT IS IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM THE KNOWLEDGE THAT SHE WILLINGLY ATE A CHICKEN BURGER AT HUNGRY JILL'S THREE DAYS AGO!”

“I don’t even like that sort of food…” Airi grumbles to herself.

"Then don't order it, dummy." You heave up your rifle and stare down the sights. “The sooner we get this over and done with, the sooner we can stop listening to this bastard.”

Airi steps over to the side of the cover. She takes a look, then motions with her hands. “I’m ready. Let’s go!”

“Ready when you are!” You reply back.

In an instant, Airi has drawn her blade. In another, she is gone. From your position, you see a blur of brown and blue, zipping between upturned tables and dancing between pillars of flame and waves of heat. The chicken hasn’t noticed her yet. It’s jerking its head left and right, bewildered at what’s going on.

You take aim and grab your finger around the trigger. The sights are locked at its chest. You really don’t want to mess this up!

You squeeze the trigger. Bullets come out of the end of your rifle, as expected. They hit the target like tiny missiles, tunneling into giant chicken’s flesh and squeezing out a blossom of blood from within. The chicken roars and directs its burning gaze towards you. You smirk.

“Come on, then!” You shout.

“DO YOU REALIZE HOW MUCH WE CHICKENS HAVE SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF YOU HUMANS?” the beast shouts. A hail of gunfire is your reply. It storms towards you, kicking up trash and chairs. “CAN YOU COMPREHEND THE AMOUNT OF BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS WE HAVE WEPT FROM OUR BODIES?”

“You don’t have any fucking sweat glands!”

“IT WAS A METAPHOR. LIKE WHAT YOU ARE SO USED TO MAKING!” The monster vomits fire. The couches go out in a blaze of glory, but mostly burnt fabric. You are long gone before that happens.

“THERE WAS ONCE A YOUNG CHICK ON A FARM IN NAGOYA.” The giant chicken yells. “HIS NAME WAS DAVE. HE WAS JOYFUL AND BRIGHT. ALL OF THE OTHER CHICKS LOVED HIM. THEN HE WATCHED AS HIS MOTHER AND FATHER WERE CRUELLY SLAUGHTERED FOR THEIR MEAT AND FEATHERS. THE PAIN HE FELT WAS—”

“Nobody cares!” You yell. The chicken swerves to the side as you fire again. The bullets, having missed their target, striking a non-functioning display panel. Glass rains.

"I BEG TO DIFFER! AND IT IS BECAUSE OF DAVE'S DESPAIR, ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS, THAT I AM HERE TODAY!"

Out of the corner of your eye, you see a figure slide around the back of the chicken and make a mad dash for a table, one that has somehow survived the noise and chaos in here. It’s Airi! She runs towards it, jumps on the table and takes a running leap off it. Her blade is positioned above her head, her eyes staring daggers at the nape of the giant chicken’s neck. If she can make a good cut here, then it could conclude the battle instantly! All she needs to do is not screw up!

At the last second, the giant chicken turns around. Its eyes widen in horror. So do Airi’s, as she realizes that her cunning plan has failed. She slashes anyway. The metal blade draws a deep gash on the chicken’s reddened features. It’s nowhere near the killing blow, though. The chicken opens its beak. Fire envelops your sister.

“Airi!” You scream. “You bastard!” A storm of bullets reject themselves from your rifle. The chicken leaps to the side, evading them all. A glimmer of triumph is evident in its eyes.

“DOES IT HURT, HUMAN?” It crows. “SEE HOW THE HUMAN GIRL WAS EVAPORATED INTO ASHES. FEEL THE PAIN OF LOSING ONE CLOSE TO YOU—”

Several squishy noises resound through the space. All participants stop and look at the chicken’s side to see throwing daggers piercing into raw flash. Paper tags are attached to the ends. Intricate runes are scrawled on them with black ink that smells of gunpowder.

"WHAT--"

“Detonate.” Goes a feminine whisper, and the paper tags explode. The chicken is consumed in the blast and thrown towards a window. Its head smashes against a glass. The shards stab into its body. One, by sheer chance, digs itself deep into the neck. The chicken gurgles and begins to thrash about.

“Sorry, I messed up. A little burnt too…” Airi stumbles from a cloud of dust, wincing. Her uniform is in tatters. “I’m fine though, onii-chan. Don’t worry!”

“Be more careful next time!” You snap, grabbing her and hauling her back.

“I will, I will.” Airi affirms. She looks at the chicken. “Seems like it’s almost done, huh…”

“I’m not feeling sorry for it.” You grunt.

“I wasn’t about to say that. It did just try to kill us.” Airi says. “So, what do you want to do now?”

“Onii-chan, what are you doing?”

“…looting for valuables.” You reply, peeking through upturned cash registers.

“Why would there be anything valuable here?” Airi says. “This is the manifestation of the grudge towards fast food chains.”

“You never know.”

She pouts. “Really, you should cut out that bad habit of yours. It’s not healthy…”

“Maybe you’ve got a stable income, but ammunition and new guns don’t grow on trees, alright?” You bark back.

Your looting is rewarded with a couple of crystals. Why there were crystals in a cash register is not a question you are not privy to answer. The spirit realm is illogical enough already. Thinking too hard about it might make your brain explode.

In any case, the crystals will pay for the ammunition you used up from earlier, as well as the ammunition to be used in the near future.

>>Keiichi: Finish the job.

You accomplish this by unloading your entire magazine into the giant chicken. It’s loud, and smells of acid. Shells clink and roll on the tiled floor. Airi sighs and steps back.

Now the monster is truly defeated. Despite it all, it still has strength to spit a few more words at you.

“THIS IS NOT OVER, HUMANS! WE ANIMALS WILL HAVE OUR REVENGE! THE BOAR, THE BULL, THE LAMB AND THE RAT…MY COMRADES, WHO ARE CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH AS YOU, WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND DESTROY YOU ALL. REMEMBER THIS, HUMAN CHILDREN! MAY THESE WORDS RING THROUGH YOUR EMPTY SKULLS UNTIL YOUR DYING DAYS…”

It chokes, sputters and goes silent. You watch as its body decomposes into individual tiny particles, each one smaller than a grain of sand. They drift towards the hole in the ceiling and out of sight.

With the master gone, the pocket reality collapses. Everything flashes in and out of color. Reds and blues transform to grey and back again in mere seconds. The walls and floor twist and spiral like the contents of a badly made milkshake. The furniture is blurring, shining and darkening all at once. You close your eyes and wait for the effect to fade.

The scent of fresh air, mingling with petrol and oil. An incomprehensible chatter that could only be found from the denizens of a metropolis. The thuds of many footsteps stomping across a pavement. Electrical jingles mixed with the voices of whatever B-grade pop star contracted to do a company’s work.

You open your eyes to find you and your sister in one of Tokyo’s many, many alleys, sandwiched between a ramen store and a run-down law firm. Outside, the early traffic rush is in full swing. Pedestrians rush past the entrance, most of which are dressed in work gear.

“We’re back!” Airi exclaims from behind you. “And we won!”

She runs up to you with a big smile on her face. “Aren’t you happy, onii-chan?”

Instead, you opt to slump on the ground next to a brick wall.

“What I don’t get—” You grumble to yourself, staring at the morning sun in a clear blue sky, “—is how any of that had anything to do with organizing a magic academy tournament.”

Shibuya, in the year 2016.

A special ward of Tokyo, it is a whole fifteen square kilometers of high-rise buildings and busy concrete streets, where fashion, entertainment and youth culture reign as kings. There are three hundred thousand citizens living in this city, and together they form a stomping ground for all kinds of cultures and creeds. It is an urban world where sound and information are as omnipresent as the oxygen in the air. Every citizen is a channel on the radio and they are all competing to see who can roar the loudest.

The city attracts all sorts. Young or old, talented or average, intelligent or charismatic…they are all pulled towards the streets of the town like iron bands to a magnet. The arcane is no exception. Like many other cities across the world, Shibuya is yet another a place where magic and technology have managed to mix and integrate.

Out of the three hundred thousand-strong population, approximately twenty percent are of the magus class—humans capable of wielding the reality-altering gift of magic. The city is full of change and it has long since moved to adapt. Magical products, such as charms, are seen in store windows alongside designer ware and the latest smartphones. Shows displaying magical talent are frequently displayed in the city’s many stadiums and arenas. Talent scouts roam the streets, scanning the crowds for youths showing sparks of magical talent.

In short, Shibuya is yet another city to have successfully taken advantage of the Second Union—an event from over fifty years ago, in which the link between the human and spirit worlds was connected and magic began reappearing within the souls of humanity…

A year ago, you and your sibling traveled to Shibuya to study at a magus-exclusive academy. The sheer noise and density of Shibuya had threatened to overwhelm you, but over time the two of you became accustomed to it. Now, the morning traffic has faded into the morning background noise and you are no longer dazzled by the sheer variety of colors plastered on the city billboards. You and your sibling have integrated yourselves so well that the two of you could be mistaken for natural city boys and girls.

Note that the above description could fit either one of the Hirayama siblings. Several days ago, which one were you?

You are now Keiichi Hirayama from several days ago. Your age is still seventeen. Your sister is also still seventeen. The difference in age between the two of you is minimal. The difference in hair color is not.

A number of fortnights ago, you and your sister were caught up in a terrible accident that sent the two of you straight to the hospital. Luckily, the two of you have made a full recovery and are just about to be discharged.

“Hey, onii-chan, what are you going to do when you get back home?”

“Probably the same thing I was doing in hospital, Airi.”

“Eating snacks and doing nothing in particular?”

“No! I meant I was going to study!”

“You’re going to study? As in, do schoolwork?” Airi gasps. She raises a hand and presses it to your forehead. “Wow, we should go back and check for a concussion, then.”

“Oh for the love of—”

As nice as it is to be healthy, it seems that trouble is determined to follow you around. The moment you and your sister exit into the hospital courtyard, a car pulls up on the side of the road. It’s a limousine, big, black and shiny. Two figures emerge from the side. Both are Asian men, with tall, muscular builds. They are dressed in identical black suits with matching white ties and sunglasses. The only difference you can see is in their hair. The buzz cut of the second is slightly rougher than the first.

“Keiichi and Airi Hirayama?” One of them drones, in a voice like lead balls scraping against a gravel driveway.

“Who’s asking?” You growl, immediately tensing up.

“Some very important people in the government would like to speak with you two.” The second man states. “Please come with us.”

“Prove it, then.” Airi says. “Show us your IDs.”

Without flinching, the two of men take out plastic cards and show them to you. They also show you badges, which state that they are working on the behalf of Japan’s Ministry of Education. You flip open your phone and check the objects with information on the Internet.

“It all seems to check out…” Your sister mumbles, “But…”

She doesn’t have to finish her sentence. You’re both still suspicious. It's present in your eyes and the twitches of your fingers.

“Let’s say I choose to believe these are fakes.” You say to the two men. “What then?”

“For what reason do you believe pieces of identification are fraudulent?” asks the second suited man.

You shrug. “You never know. Stranger things have happened. Besides, I'm not letting my sister and I get kidnapped when we've both come right out of the hospital.”

The first man raises his hand. “Allow me to state that you two will not be subjected to any harm whatsoever. You will both be treated fairly. In the event that you are attacked, you may defend yourself with whatever means you have on hand.”

“That sounds generous enough.” Airi states, looking down at her phone. “We’re still notifying our friends, though.”

“Take our time, then.” The second man says, and doesn't move.

>>Keiichi: Inform your friends.

This seems like a particularly good idea.

[micchan] this is probably karma for something you did in the past. it all comes around or something???
[Dude With Guns] Whatever.
[Dude With Guns] I’m just telling you this in the event we get kidnapped and sold to pirates for our organs.
[Dude With Guns] The number plate of the limo is 4-JDM by the way.

“Are the two of you ready now?” The first man asks.

You and your sister glance at each other. Seems like there isn’t much choice. Faint bumps in their clothing tell you that the two men are armed with weapons. You cannot detect signs of mana. They are either both excellent at hiding their magus status or are simply normal humans with guns. Yet, the latter is still dangerous in your world. Coupled with uncertainty and you begin to think that causing a scene might not be the best of ideas.

“We have received consent from the student council president of your academy, by the way.” The second man says. He shows a signed document that you confirm is authentic. “Please do not resist any further. We do not wish to use force.”

“Alright, alright. I got it.” You say. “How long is this going to take, anyways?”

“That depends on how long the meeting lasts.” Says the first man. You and Airi are ushered into the back of the limo. Your two bodyguards pile into the back and start the engine. The limo is off down the streets, switching lanes, puffing exhaust fumes and making many drivers clench their teeth and snarl at how long the vehicle is.

There’s nothing to do but sit in the (admittedly plush and comfortable) seats and chat away the time. So that’s what the two of you do.

After fifteen minutes or so, the limo screeches to a halt in front of a chrome skyscraper. You and Airi are taken inside. Past the front desk with the plastic-faced receptionist, into an elevator, up the building and towards a set of steel doors.

“Please enter.” One of them states. “Once your business inside is done, you may both leave.”

With no small amount of trepidation, you grip the doorknob and yank the door open. It reveals a large, spacious meeting area. It’s long, with a rectangular table placed in the middle. The curtains at the very back are fully drawn, shrouding the room in darkness. From what you can discern, every single seat at the table is full. There must be at least twenty or so people in there. All of them sound older than you and filling your surroundings with whispers and hurried gasps.

You and Airi move closer to the table. A man at the very back, in the biggest seat, raises his hand. His entire figure, save for his balding head, is obscured by shadows. He speaks with deep, rough tones.

“Greetings, Keiichi Hirayama, Airi Hirayama.” The mention of your surfaces sets the muttering back in motion. Again, the man at the back raises his hand to quell the noise. “I am pleased to see you two are well. Allow me to introduce us all. We are the Ministry of Education for the Japanese government. We consist of high ranking officials and ex-headmasters of prestigious schooling institutions.”

He leans forward, resting his elbows on the table. “Tell me, are you two aware of this country’s Festival of Magic?”

Who doesn’t, is the rhetorical question that you refrain from speaking. Airi actually enunciates it, thus ruining the effect. The Japanese Festival of Magic was essentially a tournament, in which skilled magi across the country could clash against each other for the chance of prizes and fame. The tournament was traditionally held every year and was seen as a win-win scenario on many fronts. Choice students got the chance to win ridiculous amounts of cash, their academies could reap the benefits of ‘possessing’ famous students, it served as excellent entertainment for the masses and last but not least the Japanese government could rake in millions in revenue.

In the days coming to the tournament, advertisements could be found plastered on every billboard and signpost in the urban districts. In Shibuya this meant that it was practically unavoidable. The Internet, even more so.

So yeah, you are aware of the Festival of Magic. Obscenely so, given what type of academy you attend.

“Allow me to get to the crux of the issue our department is facing.” The bald man continues. “Last year, our nation of Japan failed to successfully run and complete the Festival of Magic—three times in a row!”

“You guys failed three times in one year?” You say. “Wow.”

“Onii-chan!” Airi hisses, nudging you in the side. “Don’t be rude!”

The grip in the bald man’s hands tightens. More whispering breaks out, this time greater in intensity. You catch the words ‘young people and ‘uncouth’ floating around the room.

“While it was true, that most of the fault lies with us, it should be said that the reason the Festival of Magic failed to run three times is because there were events surrounding the tournament that prevented it from starting.” The bald man states. “Specifically, key setpieces would get damaged, important persons would become incapacitated and funds would be withdrawn. At the end of last year, we immediately launched an investigation into these disturbances. After some time, we finally found the common link between them all.”

The bald lifts a finger, heavy and imposing as the appendage of the gods. “We found that a great deal of the chaos in these disturbances was caused by you two—the infamous SwordxGun siblings of Shibuya’s True Hearts Academy!”

“Wait, wait, wait, what?” You shout. “Are you saying that we were ones who prevented the festival from running?”

“Not entirely, but yes you and your sister did play major parts.”

“Not entirely, but yes you and your sister did play major parts.”

“With all respect, I think that’s false!” Airi cries. “Surely two high school students can’t cause enough damage to stop one of Japan’s largest events?”

“Is that what you believe?” The bald man snorts. He gestures to his fellows. “Shall we enlighten these children as to what they have done?”

You instantly find a dozen more fingers being pointed your way.

“Causing chaos on the streets!” A man shouts.

“Property damage across not just Shibuya, but also Shinjuku and Ikebukuro!” Another woman cries.

“Skipping classes and fighting with other academies!”

“Pointing guns to the heads of foreign delegates!”

“Destroying part of a public stadium with explosions!”

An elderly lady, with greying hair and aging spectacles, lifts a craggy, shaking finger. “Chasing the skirts of girls across multiple academies!” she shrieks, her voice hoarse.

“Wait a minute!” You exclaim. “I’m pretty sure none of those events actually happened!”

“That’s right!” Airi nods, crossing her arms and puffing. If onii-chan started fraternizing with multiple girls, I’d have already called the police!”

You jerk your head sideways to glare at your sister. “What the hell, Airi?”

“What? It’s true! Adultery is against the law!”

The bald man coughs. “Do the two of you understand the situation?”

“No.” You growl. “You seem to be implying that we’re supposed to do something about it.”

“You catch on quickly.” The bald man replies, nodding. “Our government was decided to run the next iteration of the Festival of Magic in three months’ time. We intend it for it to be an absolute success. We also wish for the two of you to assist in the preparations. Consider it something of a community service.”

“I don’t understand,” says Airi. “We’re just two high-schoolers in our final year. None of us have much work experience. How are we supposed to help organize one of Japan's biggest events?”

“There are a number of tasks we wish for you to complete. Do not worry; the tasks are suited for someone your age...”

“I’m not feeling very confident right now...”

“Oh, I’m sure the two of you will figure something out.” The bald man says, almost airily, waving his hand about.

“None of this makes any damn sense! I’m pretty sure there are child labor laws against this!” You can’t help but shout. All the tension and bullshittery that has occurred over the past hour has combined together into some sort of foul, mental cocktail. It’s threatening to erupt from the pits of our psyche. “Also, what do you mean we’re supposed to figure something out? Aren’t you placing too much faith in us?”

“Calm yourself, Keiichi Hirayama. You and your sister will be paid accordingly for your services, so it’s not child labour.” The bald man says, his voice hinted with concern. “As for the last detail, I thought you already knew.”

“Knew what?”

“…you are not aware?”

“I’m not aware of what the hell you’re talking about! All I’m aware of is that this is completely balls-to-the-wall insane!”

“Interesting.” The bald man lifts his fingers to his chin. He thinks, then shakes his head. “Well, it isn’t relevant right now.”

“Excuse me?” Airi raises her hand, her mouth in a flat line. “What happens to us if we fail?”

“Simple. If you do not comply or fail to complete all the tasks before the due date, we will be forced to blacklist you from all workplaces and universities across this nation. We will also remove your citizenship status. You will never be able to find a proper job in this country.”

“Since when does the Ministry of Education have power like that?” You snarl, slamming your palms on the table. A nearby glass cup rattles with shock.

The bald man lifts his head and gazes at you with a pair of chilling, sapphire eyes. “Do not underestimate us.” He rumbles.

“Nobody in particular.” You reply. “I’m just thinking about how terrible our situation is.”

“We’re still alive, aren’t we?” She says. “And we just completed one of the tasks just then. We’re already on the road to finishing them all.”

“How you stay so optimistic in the face of forced work is something I’m not going to try and understand…”

“I do it because it works.” She walks forward and pats you on the shoulder. “Come on, onii-chan. Stop being so dour. You should know that together the two of us can do anything.”

Ah, crap. Once again, Airi is right. Standing there with that sunny smile of hers, crimson scarf flowing in the gentle breeze, she’s so right it’s almost insufferable. It seems that you have fallen for her (platonic and sistery) charms.

“Yeah, true that.” You smirk.

“That’s the spirit!” Airi exclaims, punching the air. “Part of doing your best means believing in yourself from the very start.”

>You will now tackle tasks with Airi.

“Uh-huh, I get you.” Something then gurgles. It’s your stomach. “Man, I’m starving. Want to grab breakfast from somewhere?”

“Maybe not Texas Fried Chicken?” Airi suggests. “We’re in Dogenzaka right now, though. I heard from Micchan that there’s this great ramen bar around here somewhere. By the way, what’s the time?”

You check your watch. “Eight fifteen, apparently. So there’s fifteen minutes before school starts, huh…”

The words exit your mouth, hang in the air, then fade. It is only then that their full implications hit you like a truck slamming into a brick wall.

Airi has her mouth hung open and she is trembling. “Fifteen minutes before school starts…?” she echoes.

“Airi, don’t do what I think you are about to do.”

“Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no!” Airi cries. “This is bad. This is seriously bad!”

“Ah, dammit…”

“Onii-chan, we have go, now! We can’t miss out on the first week of school!”

“What about breakfast?” You groan.

“We’ll get something from vending machines later!”

“That’s hardly a breakfast at all!”

It’s too late. Airi is in full urgency mode. Before you can react, she grabs hold of your arm, presses her heels against the ground and takes off towards the alleyway entrance. You are dragged along through a tunnel of rushing wind, paper scraps flowing past and a panicked little sister struggling in front.

“I know you’re in a hurry and you’re faster than me, but could you at least let me go?” You shout. “Hello? Airi? Are you even listening, dammit!”

She doesn't hear you. She runs and runs. Eventually, the two of you fade into the mass of buildings that make up the city.

It's a place of concrete and steel, noise and ideal. It's a world where crowds are omnipresent, shops are plentiful and change is everywhere. It's a city that is only as big as you make it out to be.

It's yet another peaceful morning in the ward of Shibuya.

>9/10 TASKS REMAINING.
>>
And thus, the first thread concludes. Thanks to all who participated today! It feels great to be back and QM'ing. Hopefully I have actually learned from my mistakes this time!

Seriously, this quest better be only as long as it needs to be, or I'll print out all my notes and eat them. No waifus yet, unfortunately, unless you're into bestiality or incest. The difference between Keiichi and Airi is less than a year, though...

I think I'll shorten the title to Academy Tournament Organization Quest, too. That should be less terror on the title box.

New thread tomorrow, same time as today. That is to say, 10:00 pm UTC. If you had fun today, then I hope to see you then!

Oh, and I'm going to be sticking around a little while, so feel free to ask me any questions if you have them.

Keiichi and Airi were born in the countryside. Does that tell you anything?

It'll be explored in detail in the next thread.

He has female friends and a cute(?) little sister...?

>>640624

Maybe? I mean, the giant chicken is dead, so bestiality in this case would also be necrophilia.

>>640640
The bald guy was a human.

I like Kagerou Project. Mekakucity Actors had a lot of nice images for me steal. As for the actual content, it was the prettiest piece of shit I've ever watched.

True Hearts Academy.

Located in the district of Shibuya, the academy is reputed as one of the best in Japan. It boasts sizeable grounds, top-grade facilities, excellent and reasonable teachers and a 97% success rate for all graduating students. It is also magus-exclusive, meaning that all students must possess the gift of magic. Thus, all students who wish to attend must fulfil three criteria: exorbitant schooling fees, a passing grade in the entrance exam and the ability to perform at least one magic art—a certain specialized, application of their magic.

A year ago, you and your sister Airi had been standing in front of the entrance gates, having just moved straight from the countryside. You remember being awestruck by the sight. Compared to your quaint hometown, the academy’s front building—with its shining chrome dome, modern glass windows, its neatly trimmed gardens and silver logo—had seemed like the entrance to a whole another world. The students that had milled around the gate, dolled up in their neatly-pressed blazers and department store fashion accessories were its alien residents.

The city had been a monstrosity of its own, disorientating at best. But True Hearts Academy was on a whole new level of its own, a plane of existence built from the building blocks of elegance and progress. You remember trembling a bit, wondering what exactly you had gotten yourself into. Then, Airi had taken your hand, given it a squeeze and you a smile.

“Don’t worry, onii-chan!” She had said, brightly. “We’ll get through this, I’m sure of it.”

And you had nodded back and said. “I guess I’m ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

The two of you had taken your first steps into the school grounds. It had heralded the beginning of a new adventure for you. An adventure that had stretched across multiple semesters and could most definitely not be written in Airi’s letters back home.

Fast-forward a year or so, and you have carved out your own place at True Hearts Academy. You know where all the best lunch spots are. You know what teachers are likely to turn a blind eye and which ones will come down on you like a ton of bricks. You are familiar with most of the clubs, can almost recite all the vending machine placements from memory and have learned the lesson of running to the cafeteria as fast as possible (before all the good seats get taken).

“Ha…ha…ha…”

“We’re almost there, Keiichi! Look, I can see the front entrance already!”

Yes, you and your sister have truly become intimate with the academy.

“Hey, ain’t that the SwordxGun duo?”

“Oh yeah, it is! Hey, Hirayama siblings! How’s the morning?”

As that one English scientist had said, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. What that basically means is that the academy has become just as intimate with you.

“Shit, those two look rough. What happened to them?”

“Did those two get set on fire?”

“Maybe they went on one of their crazy adventures?”

The truth of the matter is, you and your sister did not enjoy your school life in peace. While the members of the Ministry of Education had unjustly accused you and Airi, hadn't been entirely wrong. A lot of things had simply been taken out of context.

This obviously made them prime rumor mill bait. Rarely a good thing.

“Was it a kidnapping? Tell me it was a kidnapping. Kidnappings are the best! Bonuses if it ended with a car chase!”

“I heard Keiichi Hirayama once took someone hostage with his gun!”

“Did they set fire to a stadium again?”

“Maybe they got into a fight and barely emerged victorious. I heard Airi Hirayama is still a beast with a sword.”

“Airi can take a look at my sword any time she wants!”

You make a mental note to find the bastard who said that and teach him a bloody and painful lesson. This is why you wish the journalism club didn’t exist.

Class starts at 8:30. It is now 8:35 and you are right at the door to class 3-4, your classroom. Airi flings the door open and the two of you rush inside. Two dozen heads swivel on their necks to look at you. The bespectacled teacher is one of them.

“Oh, good morning…?” The man splutters at the sight of you and your sister. Specifically, your clothes. You and Airi suddenly remember that this is a private school and private schools tend to enforce strict dress codes. Tattered, frayed and burned clothes are not on the list!

“Hirayama!” The teacher groans. “What's with the two of you this time?”

>I know he was just jealous of my devotion for Giga-Chicken
>I called him a cunt

>I lay in bed and it's really cold
>Suddenly, a warmth is moving towards me
>It's Giga-Chicken
>I am so happy
>He whispers into my ear "FEEL THE SUFFERING OF MY BRETHREN IN YOUR HUMAN FACTORY FARMS."
>He grabs me with his powerful chicken… hands? I don't fucking know. He put me down onto my hands and knees
>I'm ready
>I spread my ass-cheeks for Giga-Chicken
>He looks weirded out.
>"WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?" he asks.
>"Because that's what you're here for," I say. "My sweet young ass-flesh."
>"WHAT? NO. FUCK NO. WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO THAT."
>"Just do it, you giant chicken!"
>"THAT'S A RACIAL SLUR WAIT WHAT THE HELL GET OFF OF ME HELP"
>It hurts so much but I do it for Giga-Chicken
>I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water
>I push against his force
>I want to please Giga-Chicken, but he wants to make it hard for me, trying to throw me off and screaming for the police.
>He crows in a mighty cry as he fills my butt with his love
>My dad walks in
>Giga-Chicken looks him straight in the eyes and says "HELP ME I'VE BEEN VIOLATED."
>Giga-Chicken leaves through my wall, breathing fire everywhere

>>Keiichi Hirayama: Tell him the absolute, honest truth.

The bespectacled man blinks, slowly. The corners of his mouth twist downwards and a bundle of creases shift themselves to life in the arch above his eyes.

“You say that you and your sister were tasked to defeat a gigantic, fire-breathing toxic chicken spirit on the behalf of the Japanese government?” He states, enunciating each word is a sort of disbelieving precision.

“Yes, sir.” You reply, looking at him straight in the eye.

“And that is why your clothes are burned? Because the chicken almost set the two of you on fire?”

“Yes, sir.”

The teacher sighs. He picks his rollcall binder and jerks a thumb towards the row of seats. “You’re lucky we’re only halfway through the first week. Go and sit down, both of you. Find some clean clothes at recess or something.”

“Thank you, sir.” It always pays to be polite towards your teachers, especially when the one you’re standing in front of is shaking his head and muttering something about ‘those two getting up to no good again’. Without another word, you and Airi make your way towards your seats—an empty pair in the second row at the front. You slump into yours like a creature retreating into his bog. Airi pulls her out with care and neatly sits down, like the proper girl that she is.

It’s homeroom right now. You can tell by the way the teacher finishes calling the roll and starts warbling on about various extra-curricular activities across the academy. You cannot muster up the energy to care. You head is flat on the side of the desk and your arms dangle by your side. Your clothes reek of burning carbon and there’s a monster crying for out help in the depths of your belly.

On your left, in a seat next to you, a young, blonde girl gives you and your sister the once-over. You roll your head to the side to look at her. You stare at her violet eyes, her round, rosy-cheeked face and the cute little antenna sticking out of her air.

“Oh, hello.” Airi mumbles, giving the blonde a weak smile. “Good morning, Micchan.”

The girl sighs and puts her hands on her hips. “Okay, now. What have the two of you gotten yourself into this time?” she says, her tone betraying her exasperation.

>“All you need to know is that the government is awful.”
>“Weren’t you listening?”

“Weren’t you listening?” You mumble.

“I was, Keiichi,” The girl says, “The scary part is that I think this is normal for you.”

“I know, right.”

“Not even you are that reckless, though. Nobody goes around fighting toxic spirits unless they’re part of the police.”

“If I told you we were commissioned by the Japanese government to help organize the Festival of Magic and that involved shooting bullets at the spirit of chickens that have suffered at the hands of fast food corporations,” You take a deep breath, “Would you believe me?”

“No,” The girl replies. “I’d think you were being stupid again, then something would happen to me that would make me start believing in you. That basically happened thrice last year.”

“I’m so glad you understand me, Michiko.” You say to her.

“By the way, the two of you stink.” She says, pinching her nose.

“We know…” Airi moans. “None of us had time to shower.”

Michiko, the girl, looks at you both with pity. “The two of you had a rough morning, huh…”

“No, we’re actually perfectly fine.” You spit, sarcastically. “This is actually how all our mornings go.”

Michiko grabs the sides of her chair. “I’m going to be moving closer to the window now.” She does this by shuffling in her seat, scraping the plastic bottoms against the enamel floor. At the front of the classroom, the teacher gives her a disgusted look.

“Before you do finish that, can you buy us breakfast?” You say.

“Excuse me?” Michiko narrows her eyes. “Do I look like a waitress to you?”

Airi thinks. “There was that maid café our class ran for the school festival last year…”

The blonde girl sighs. “Never mind.”

“Look,” You retrieve a battered purse from your wallet and take out some yen notes. You place them on Michiko’s desk. “The two of us are starving. We’ve used up all our energy running to school and even we didn’t make us on time. There’s a vending machine a couple rooms down. Go there during transition and buy, fuck I don’t know, some bread and a drink for us. Here’s the money. There’s twice as much here or something. Keep the change.”

Michiko glances at the cash, towards you and Airi, then back again. Over at the front, the teacher ticks off a sheet and announces that homeroom has concluded. He leaves. With the lack of an adult, your fellow classmates immediately begins chatting to each other.

She runs a hand through her bleach blonde hair, her delicate fingers brushing against her silver hairpieces.

“You’re lucky I’m so generous.” She states, standing up. “Is melon bread fine with you?”

“I’d take wholebread at this rate…”

“Fine, whatever. Don’t complain when I bring the food back, okay?” Michiko walks over to the exit. Halfway there, she stops and turns back.

“By the way, the student council president came looking for the two of you.”

“Kushikawa?” You mutter.

“Yeah. What’s this all about?”

You groan. “Tell you later, Michiko. Just go and get the bread for us.”

Several periods later, it’s lunch time. Every other kid in the academy goes outdoors to enjoy themselves in the sunshine. You and Airi, on the other hand, head upstairs to the third floor of the school building. The entrance to the student council room is somewhere in the middle, which you quickly locate and enter into.

In the middle of a square, neat room and seated on a plastic chair is a boy your age. His hair is a shade of cerulean and his eyes are deep-set and focused. He’s dressed in the summer school uniform: white shirt, blue striped tie and grey pants. Despite this, there’s an air of casualness about him, as if he could walk through the crowds in Shibuya and nobody could recognize him.

You know him as Makoto Kushikawa, the student council president of True Hearts Academy. He’s also an agent of the government and the one who sent you up against the giant fire-breathing chicken.

When he notices you and Airi, his hand is wrapped out a half-eaten Texas Fried Chicken burger. He immediately puts it down and gives you a smile and a wave.

“Hey! Keiichi, Airi, how did the task go?”

>“I found out they put rats in the burgers.”

“It went alright.” You reply. “The two of us got burned, but otherwise we’re fine.”

“Oh, that’s good.” Makoto sounds relieved. “Because if you didn’t banish that toxic spirit, more stock would’ve gone missing from the nearby Texas Fried Chicken and the businessman who oversees that store would’ve become increasingly more paranoid, thus leading to him being unable to help run the tournament…”

“I’m not sure it was necessary to say that.” Airi says.

“By the way,” You say, “did you know they put rats in the burgers?”

When you say this, Makoto has shoved a mouthful of burger in his mouth. His irises shrink and the wad of chewed up meat and bread immediately goes flying out of his mouth. His hands clench around his throat as he starts coughing. Spittle is sent in all directions. The effect is not dissimilar to a man dying on seawater. Airi scowls and kicks you in the shin.

“Onii-chan!” she scolds.

“It was a joke.” You say, hastily. “Didn’t you say that I needed to being so sour?”

“It was dour and it wasn’t funny!” Airi waggles a finger in front of your face. “You’ve ruined Makoto’s lunch.”

“No, no, he hasn’t,” Makoto corrects, trying to smile through the pain in his chest. “I was just really surprised. Of course there aren't rats in the burgers. That would be ridiculous. Even if there were, the fries are still good, you know.”

“Actually, those have been coated in…” Without a second, Airi clamps her hand over your mouth. The intent is clear. You give up.

“Anyway, that's enough playing around. Let’s get down to business, shall we?” Makoto retrieves a laptop from the back and places it in front of him. You and Airi go over to look. A document has been pulled up on the screen.

“You’ve guys have completed one task for the Japanese government. That means you get some money. It’s already been transmitted to your collective bank account.”

“Perfect!” Airi sings, clapping her hands. “That should be enough for our food costs for the rest of the month.”

“It also means there are nine tasks left. The Ministry of Education sent me like thirty different ones, but I’ve filtered them down a little. Take a look.”

You peer at the screen. Each task has been written down, complete with a title and a description.

MY FANCY CHEF CAN’T BE THIS UPSET!
In Supein-zaka, there’s a fancy restaurant called the Universal Retreat. It most specializes in high-class Western foods, including those from the Mediterranean. It also has some of the most expensive prices in the street. Critics say that its prices are well deserved, though.

The head chef of the restaurant was contracted to cook for the opening party at the Festival of Magic, but for some reason he isn’t complying any longer. He’s saying he wants out! There’s probably some misunderstanding between him and some officials. It shouldn’t be hard for the two of you to sort it out.

CLOTHING THIEVES? IN OUR SCHOOL? SERIOUSLY?
Recently, there have been incidents where clothes from the boys and girls changing rooms have gone missing. The obvious conclusion is that there are perverts lurking about! This is seriously bad for our academy’s reputation! So far the student council has managed to contain the rumors to the confines of our academy, but if word gets out on the streets, it might damage the way the public looks at us! It might even get us kicked us out of the Festival of Magic! Please go and solve this right away!

SCUM ON THE STREETS!
Every city has its delinquents, and Shibuya is no different. Groups of delinquents are lurking around the area near Udagawa. They seem to have been making some funny moves lately. I’m sure the two of you are enough to investigate and solve whatever trouble they are brewing.

“Hey, there are only three listings here…” Airi notes.

“Well, that’s uh…” Makoto’s voice drops, and he looks away. “I haven’t finished writing them yet…”

“Pardon?” Airi asks.

“N-nothing!” Makoto says, spluttering. “A-anyway, it’s probably a tough choice for you guys to make, so think it over while I ask you a different question. How do you guys feel about the Festival of Magic?”

“We managed to get into the preliminary rounds last time.” Airi replies. She fidgets with her fingers. Her cheeks glow warm. “Then part of the stadium, um, blew up…”

“Eh, that’s not what I meant. Are you guys interested in participating this time? I know it failed three times last year, but it is one of the biggest competitions in Japan. The prize money could buy a fancy house in the suburbs and then some. And you guys are some of our best fighters, or well, you used to be…”

You remember the last Festival of Magic, mostly because it actually started and you and Airi had signed up for it. It had been a gathering of five magus academy factions: True Hearts Academy of Shibuya, Stone-Wolf High of Shinjuku, Caelestis College of Ginza, Lady Sagisawa’s School of Knowledge of Bunkyo and a bunch of miscellaneous independents. Together, these factions had sent their student soldiers into the Tokyo Dome for the chance of supremacy and wealth. You remember stepping onto a field of hard rock, with bright lights and roaring crowds surrounding you on all sides. The rush had been exhilarating. Then Airi caused her incident, spread chaos and the rush promptly went away.

“It sounds like a pain…” You grumble. “Knowing my luck though, I’ll be roped into joining no matter what I do.”

“Is that a confirmation?”

You shrug your shoulders. “Sure, why not.”

To Makoto, this is clearly the right response. A spark of passion gleams in his eyes and he pumps his fist in the air. “Awesome! In fact, that sort of right attitude is why the Ministry of Education chose you and Airi to help out with the organization.”

“I still don’t get that...” You say. “Why did the government choose us, of all people?”

“If I told you it’s because they have faith in you, would you believe me?”

“You don’t sound very convincing, president.” Airi says.

“Yeah, I know.” Makoto mumbles. “I don’t really get them either. Still, I believe in the two of you! I know that the two of you are capable of great things. That’s why you’ll both be able to complete the ten tasks, I’m sure of it!”

“Um, thanks…?” You reply, unsure of how to respond. Where the heck did all of that come from?

“Makoto, you said that we ‘used’ to be one of the academy’s best fighters.” Airi says. “What did that mean?”

“Well, uh…” Makoto’s voice trails off. He rubs the back of his neck. “You know how you guys got into the accident. You basically stayed in hospital without doing much at all, so there are rumours floating around that you both aren’t as good as before? The thing is, I think it’s valid. No offence!”

“None taken.” Airi mutters, her fingers tangling in the fabric of her crimson scarf.
>>
“I’d really like for you guys to get strong again. That way you’ll be able to advance further in the Festival.” Makoto says. “You know those friends of yours? Tsukiwaki, Takai and Rutherford? If you guys beat all of them, I’ll be convinced of your strength.”

“…you’re basically asking us to beat up a bunch of girls.” You point out.

His shoulders fall. “You don’t have to put it like that…” He moans.

“It’s true though. One of those girls is in a rival academy, too.”

“I know. I’ve heard they’re all gotten stronger in your hospital stay. Guess their past losses against the two of you drove them all to train hander.” Makoto says. “Tell you what. If you can beat them all, I’ll pull some strings and make your job easier. At the very least, I’ll take two tasks off. How does that sound?”

It sounds fine to you. You nod.

“Airi? Will you be joining the tournament alongside your brother?”

“Of course!” Airi smiles. “Is it doubles or singles this time?”

“Singles, I’m afraid. Even if you face your brother in a match, don’t give up! You have to do your best!”

“I’ll be sure not to let you down, president.”

Makoto smiles at the two of you. He gestures towards the laptop. “Okay, you guys might as well choose which task you want to do. There’s a three month time limit for all of them so you can take a little break between them. Don’t slack off, though!”

>>CLOTHING THIEVES? IN OUR SCHOOL? SERIOUSLY?

“You guys want to take the clothing thief task? Hehehe…that’s actually kinda appropriate when you think about it.” Makoto remarks.

“Why?” Airi says. “I don’t remember having our clothing stolen.”

“Nah, it’s not that. You know, the rumour mill is scarily amazing.” Makoto continues. “It’s already the first week and there’s stuff floating around about how…”

“How what?” You ask, dreading the answer deep down.

“…you guys are the clothing thieves, is what I am.”

All sound fades from the room as you and your sister gape at the chuckling student council president. Before you know it, your hands have tightened into fists. Airi has covered her mouth, her petite frame trembling.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Well, you guys are infamous for doing a lot of weird stuff.” Makoto says. “Some people think this extends to robbery and breaking and entering too…”

“We’re not thieves!” You yell. “There’s no reason for us to steal other peoples’ clothing!”

“You have beaten up a lot of girls in the past…” Makoto grins.

“I’ve shot just as many guys! And that doesn’t have to do with anything!”

“Makoto Kushikawa.” Airi says, her voice calm and iron-hard. “Are you teasing us?”

“Yeah, I am.” Makoto admits. “Seriously though, those rumors do exist. You should get rid of them before the two of you get arrested. Good luck!”

The bell rings, signaling the end of lunch. Makoto practically leaps on his half-cold burger meal and starts shoveling the remaining foodstuffs into your mouth. Sighing, you and Airi let yourselves out. You trudge back to the classroom, grumbling about rumours and morons beneath your breath.

“There you are!”

You look up to see Michiko approaching. “I’ve been looking for you.” She says, an annoyed look on her face.

“What for?” You ask.

“Open your hand.” She says.

“What?”

“Just do it!”

You comply and she dumps a heap of coins and paper notes into there. You inspect them. They seem to be fresh.

“What’s this?” You ask. Michiko’s response is to roll her violet eyes and cluck her teeth.

“It’s the change from earlier. Don’t you know anything?”

You can’t exactly investigate the theft during class, so you wait until after class. Where will you do start, is the question that must be asked. Should you even start today at all? You could probably relax a few days. On the other side of the coin, it might be best to get the tasks done as quickly as possible…

You must fight. Fight against the tyrannous vanilla vermin and all who choose to think not with their dicks but with a sensible mind. Otherwise when you return home, you may find yourself drearily alone and bitter, covered in the scars of brutal, crushing defeat. You may find yourself cowering before those who have oppressed you for eons past and now eons more.

>>Hirayama Siblings: Ask around the academy for information.

Airi suggests this and you think it’s a good idea, so you go and do it. It’s four in the afternoon and most students have gone home or to club activities. Nevertheless, there are enough milling around for you and sister to question. Without your reputation, it’s no trouble for you to simply walk up and ask.

As Airi expected, you receive a lot of different opinions.

“Huh? The robberies in the changing rooms? I keep all my stuff in the classroom, so I don’t know.”

“My school skirt was stolen! If I ever catch the bastard who did it, I’m going to set him on fire!”

“I heard that the robberies were mostly discovered after sports lessons and mock battles.”

“The latter happens all the time, so I guess the occurrences were all random?”

“It’s only been four days and so much stuff has been taken…”

“Why don’t people take their stuff with them onto the pitch? They don’t them damaged in the battle crossfire. Some do it anyway, though.”

"Seems like the guys with their own protected bags have been the safest. Bags like that can be expensive..."

“Most of the stuff that was stolen were clothes, but other stuff like phones or jewelry also taken as well…”

“Ha! That’ll teach those idiots not to put their stuff in a locker!”

“But today some lockers were broken open and the contents taken by force…”

“S-shit! That’s really fucking scary! Aren’t those things protected by magic wards?”

Thirty minutes have passed and you and Airi have more or less gotten up to speed with the situation. Now what, though? You and Airi are walking around the front yard of the academy, thinking about the answer when you hear a familiar name!

“Michiko! You have to do something about this!”

It’s coming from around the corner. You press flat against the nearest wall and crane your neck to peek around the corner. You spot Michiko standing in front of a vending machine, canned coffee in hand. Talking to her are two girls, one with red hair and the other with black hair. The red-haired one has her hands clasped in a sort of prayer position, while the black one looks like she wants to be anywhere in the world but there.

“You have to stop that awful Hirayama boy!”

“Huh?” You hear Michiko say, “What’s this about Hirayama?”

“Didn’t you listen?” The red-haired girl cries, her voice bursting with passion and hysteria. “I’m saying he’s the culprit behind the clothing thefts!”

“Oh come on, Natsuki.” Michiko scoffs, taking a sip of her coffee. “Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no way Hirayama of all people would steal clothes. He’s not poor or anything.”

“It’s because he’s a pervert!” The girl named Natsuki says.

“Natsuki, you need to calm down. I mean, Keiichi is a lot of things, like a blockhead, or a gun-obsessed nut or maybe a bit rude…” There’s a strange humming sound coming from below you. Oh wait, it’s just your teeth grinding from exasperation. You are also rolling your eyes.

“…but he’s not a pervert. I wouldn’t associate with him if he was.”

“No, he’s definitely a pervert!” Natsuki shouts. She points a finger towards Michiko’s chest. “I saw what he did to you on the first day of last year!”

A tidal wave of coffee and spit explodes from Michiko’s open mouth. It flies straight onto the black-haired girl, drenching her from head to toe. She shrieks and dashes for the entrance of a nearby restroom.

“That’s…wha…I mean…” Michiko coughs. The can fall on the ground, spilling the remaining contents.

“See, I told you so!”

“That’s…no…wait…” Michiko splutters, her cheeks turning a lovely shade of red. She slams the vending machine behind her for stability, then points at the girl named Natsuki. “Wait a minute, you’re wrong!”

“Eh?” Natsuki cries.

“It was an accident. That’s all it was. Keiichi, Airi and I cleared it up long ago. It’s all water under the bridge, understand.” Michiko grabs a tissue from her pocket and wipes the corner of her mouth. She glares at Natsuki, forceful enough to make the younger girl retreat. “Look, you shouldn’t accuse people without evidence. It’s wrong. As your upperclassman, I’ve learned that the hard way.”

“I…”

“Everyone makes mistakes, right? It’s okay. You should check up on Rui over there. She probably needs a towel.”

“Oh, crap, you’re right! I’ll see you later, Michiko!” With that, the red-haired girl takes off after her friend, dashing into the bathrooms. Michiko sighs and kicks the empty coffee can with her feet. The metal cylinder rolls into a nearby gutter.

“Hey, how long are you two going to stand there?” She asks. “Eavesdropping is rude, you know.”

You and Airi come out of hiding. “In my defence,” you say, hands raised, “I’d probably have made the situation worse.”

Michiko smirks. “Yeah, you totally would have. So? What are you two here for?”

“We’re investigating the clothing thefts.” Airi replies. “Micchan, we were hoping you knew something about them.”

Her eyes go dark. Her jaw sets, forming a hard, straight line. Her hands tense up, the fingers forming claw-like shapes. “Some of my friends had their valuables stolen. Some of the stuff stolen was needed for them to perform their magic arts.”

“Oh my gosh, that’s horrible.” Airi gasps. “I’m so sorry.”

“So yeah, I’m a little bit angry about this. Whoever this thief is, I hope he or she gets his just desserts in the near future.” She looks at you. “Why are you guys asking about this stuff, though?”

“Kushikawa asked us to investigate the thefts.” You reply. “It’s part of the government stuff I was talking about this morning.”

“Geez, why did I ever think otherwise…” Michiko sighs, part laughing along the way. “So you’re basically planning on hunting the thieves down?”

“I mean, that is one way to stop robberies from happening.”

“Let me help you two, then.”

“Eh?”

“Like I said, I’ve got a grudge against the thief. I’ve also got a network of girls around this school and I’m decent with magic. What do you say?”

You give your consent. Michiko breaks into a wide smile, one that is tingling with her anticipation and a hint of danger. “Awesome! Let’s get this done, then!”

>Michiko Tsukiwaki has joined you for Task 2.

To celebrate, the three of you buy coffee from the vending machine and drink. The taste is bitter and cold. Yet, it is passionately blazing sweet with the emotion of friendship! You feel as if you had accomplished something great today.

“Say,” Michiko begins, “Why aren’t the teachers taking care of this?”

“The world works in mysterious ways.” You mumble, tossing your can towards the garbage bin on the other side of the road. A dull whump of plastic tells you that you have hit your target.

“Micchan, who were those girls you were talking to?” says Airi.

“Underclassmen, friend of a friend.” Michiko replies, “I sometimes meet up with them over lunch. They’re nice girls. The red-haired one is Natsuki. She’s pretty hyperactive. Her best friend is the shy black-haired one with the glasses. She’s Mio.”

“Do they know anything about the thefts?” You ask.

“Maybe. I haven’t really asked them about it.” Michiko crosses her arms and thinks. “Wait here. I’ll go and fetch them.”

She goes and does that. You’d imagine that this isn’t going to take very long. You’re just going to ask some girls a few questions. You’ve obviously interacted with girls. You’ve a man who’s spent most of his days with his sister. Girls are just like boys, in many respects. If you treat them respect, they will do the same towards you. They also fall down when shot with bullets, too.

This shouldn’t take very long—

“It’s a pervert!” The girl named Natsuki yells, spitting at you.

Oh, Michiko’s back already. And her companions are being uncooperative. The black-haired girl named Mio is shivering on the spot, her blazer skirt stained with cold coffee. She’s frantically rubbing herself down with rough paper towels. Her best friend is looking at you with unsubtle accusation, her lips pursed and her nostrils puffing.

“Look, my sister and I want to find the culprit behind the clothing robberies.” You state, careful to not make sudden movements lest the Natsuki girl pull out a can of pepper spray or something. “Can you tell us anything that might help?”

The Natsuki girl shudders and hugs herself with her arms. “He’s going to leap on me like a beast.” She murmurs. “The rumours were right.”

“Don’t flatter yourself.” You growl.

“That was rude of you, onii-chan.” Airi says.

You roll your eyes. “She asked for it. Look, Natsuki, I have no idea where you got your perception of me, but I’m not going to do anything to you. There are two girls here who would rip my throat out if I did.”

“Incredibly true.” Michiko said, giving everyone a sweet smile. “If Hirayama tries to do anything, I’ll blast out his eardrums, okay?”

“And I’m his little sister.” Airi adds. “Keiichi won’t do anything wrong in front of me.”

You shoot them both flat looks. “You girls are supposed to be on my side here, damn it…”

The Natsuki girl stares at the ground. Her lip trembles. You can practically see the cogs shifting and clicking in that brain of hers. If you had access to a special kind of magic art, you could do this literally.

“Fine. I’ll tell you. Our stuff was stolen yesterday.” She speaks. “Mio and I were having PE at eleven. We put our stuff in the lockers and made sure they were wards were working. When we came back an hour later, some of it was missing. I had some of my pins taken.”

“A-and I lost my cloth charm.” The Mio girl interjects. You look at her and she squeaks. “I…I needed it for my magic art. It’s not like I’m helpless, though! I can make some more! It’ll take time, though…”

“And my pins were limited edition ones from 109.” Her jaw clenches. “They cost two months’ worth of pocket money!”

“Who entered and left the locker room back then?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “Only my classmates. I don’t think they would have stolen our stuff. Everybody was in the class that day.”

You and Airi look at each other. “I guess that’s it.” You say.

“Thanks for your time, girls.” Michiko says, clapping her hands. “Be careful on the way home.”

Natsuki nods and quickly leaves, dragging Mio behind with her.

You, Airi and Michiko are left alone in that little patch of front yard, standing beneath a beating orange afternoon studying. Your sister leans against the wall, head tilted down. She hums, eyes closed. A creases appears on her forehead, and she hums some more.

“Thinking something, sis?” You ask.

“Yes.” She replies. “Onii-chan, what did the other students say was stolen?”

You blink. “Various stuff. Goods for magic arts, bits and pieces of uniforms, ribbons, pins and other accessories too. Stuff was taken from the boys’ and girls’ changing rooms.”

“I think we can rule out the culprit being pervert.” Michiko states.

“How do you figure?”

“Because if they were, they would go straight for the undergarments, right? They wouldn’t choose both genders either.”

“Maybe they wanted to steal for the thrill of it.”

“Like a magpie picking up shiny things?” Airi nods her head. “That could be part of it. It would explain why the culprit would be willing to steal magic artifacts, which are volatile to handle. But I think there’s another reason that could apply.”

You and Michiko glance at each other before the idea hits you both at once. “Money.” You both say, simultaneously. Airi nods. Nothing else needs to be said. It would explain why the culprit would take the expensive pins and ribbons. Your school uniforms are also made out of fine fabric. If stripped down to the barest components it could sell for a decent amount. There’s a market for second-hand uniforms in all cities in Japan.

“But why would anyone want to steal for money?” Michiko asks. “Nobody gets into True Hearts without having a well-off family.”

“Scholarship students?” The instant you say that, you know it’s stupid. “No, they wouldn’t risk jeopardizing their chances here.”

“Maybe it’s two reasons combined.” Airi mutters. “For money and for the thrill. I don’t we’re going to get anywhere without taking action, though.”

“Yeah…” You say.

You contemplate the situation for a bit. You may not be smart as Airi in terms of studies, but your PERCEPTION is reasonably high compared to the rest of your peers. It should help here, right? You definitely need to come up a way to help.

>>Keiichi: Use your Ultimate Skill, known as the trump card of any good magus.

What? No! Your Ultimate Skill isn’t suited for tracking or stealth! It’s the complete opposite of that. So is Airi’s and Michiko’s for that matter. Think of something else, dumbass!

>>Keiichi: Think of something else.

“Maybe we could put cameras near the changing rooms.” You say. Airi and Michiko frown at this statement. They then scowl in disgust and back away from you. You suddenly realize why.

“Oh come on, don’t look at me like that! I said ‘near’, not ‘inside’! We put cameras near the entrances and exits of the changing rooms and monitor who comes in and who comes out. That’ll help with finding the culprit, right.”

“That might be considered an invasion of privacy, onii-chan.” Airi rebuts.

You shrug your shoulders. “It’s around the entrance. If the word gets out it’s for catching the culprit, people won’t mind. We might not even have to tell them. I know a friend who knows somebody who makes small cameras.”

“If the teachers find out about them, we’re doomed.”

“We can get Kushikawa to cover for us. That guy can do anything when it comes to this campus…”

After that, you all fall into silence for a while more. “We could set a trap.” Michiko eventually suggests. “Plant an alarm in a locker and when it’s forcefully opened, it’ll sound and draw everybody’s attention.”

"Are there any traps that work like that?"

She nods. "I know a girl whose father works for a security firm."

“That might not be subtle enough,” Airi murmurs. “Hmmm…oh yes, maybe this could work.”

“What’s up, sis?”

Airi reaches for her scarf and yanks it off with a single sweep. Sunlight pours down on her pale, raw uncovered neck. She folds the scarf in half and holds it in the air. Threads dangle from the sides.

“Onii-chan, you know that my scarf has magic inside it, right? And that I have connection with it? We can use this as bait. If the culprit takes my scarf, I can read its mana signature and track it down.”

“And that’ll lead us directly for the culprit! Nice one, Airi!” Michiko exclaims. Her mouth then twists with worry. “But, don’t you need the scarf for your magic art?”

Airi smiles, pleasant as ever. “Don’t you worry about that, Micchan. I’ve got it all covered.”

Having heard all of these options, which one will you take?

“Let’s use Airi’s scarf as bait.” You say. “Cameras are too troublesome.”

“Okay!”

“Good for me.”

Your class has PE tomorrow afternoon, which is where you all agree when the trap will be set. Everybody goes home, satisfied with their plan. A night passes and morning comes. You spend the next day in class, studying whatever materials are regurgitated to you by the teacher of the period. You write in your books, natter with your classmates and eat sandwiches Airi made for you at home.

The afternoon period comes in a flash. You switch out of True Hearts’ black blazer and pants for a navy blue sports uniform—shorts, a T-shirt and white socks. The girls are dressed in similar clothing. Halfway through soccer on an open field behind the main school building, Airi runs up to you and tugs on your sleeve.

“Onii-chan, the scarf is being moved. I can feel its location being shifted.”

“Sweet. Let’s go after it. We can catch the thief that way.”

“That the problem.” Airi replies, chewing her lip. “The scarf is being moved at a very high speed. It’ll be difficult to catch the thief in the act.”

“We should still go after it. I don’t it going out of your range!”

“…we’ll have to skip classes, though.”

“We’ve done it before.” You point it out.

“I know, but it still doesn’t feel right to me.” She sighs. “On the other hand, I don’t want to lose my scarf.”

“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

She nods. “I’ll get Michiko and we’ll head off. It’s heading towards the south-west of the city.”

“See you at the front gates!”

You all get changed and sprint out the academy grounds at full pelt. Together, as a trio, you race across Shibuya, following Airi’s senses and her hurried voice. Past the lush green terraces of Miyashita park, through the wall of noise in front of the Towa record shop, behind the towering buildings of the Shibuya Department Store. Across the Scramble Crossing, around 109 and you are back in Dogenzaka, again.

You make your way through the twisting streets until Airi finally screeches to a halt in front of a small building. Block-shaped, with dirty windows and an old-fashioned wooden door. You stare at the sign perched on the top, in fading red paint.

“Dogenzaka Second-Hand Store?” you read aloud.

Grimly, Michiko places her hand on the doorknob and twists it open.

And that's all for today. Thanks to everyone who participated. As usual, writing this was fun.

Michiko Tsukiwaki, the girl with the pointy blonde hair antenna, has been introduced! Is she a robot? Will she go berserk and slay Airi for the supremacy of the machines? The answer to both those questions is no.

If you have any comments or criticism, please don't hesitate to post them. I want to make this experience the best for both me and you, and that means I need to keep on improving my writing and questing.

Quest will continue on Sunday, 10:00 pm UTC. Hope to see you all there! I'll keep using this thread, since that seems to be what people want. Oh

The door to the second-hand shop squeals like a frustrated pig as Michiko shoves it open. The action triggers a metallic chime somewhere nearby, filling your ears with shrill jingles. It reminds you a commercial for antique kitchenware you saw on television once.

The first thing you notice as you enter with your friends is the silence. An overwhelming blanket of quietness covers the interior of the shop. It’s not just the lack of people inside; it’s to do with the peeling wallpaper, the flickering lantern dangling from the ceiling by a thread and the dusty merchandise arranged in boxes and shelves, some of which could very well be decades old. You feel that if you treaded in more than a tiptoe, somebody would pop up from behind a shelf and backhand you over the head.

Your eyes flicker across the shop. Observe the situation, contemplate entrances, exits and places of interest. That’s what you’ve been taught. There’s a glass counter at the back and a hell lot of shelves and tables with boxes of in front. Articles of faded clothing, bargain bin DVDs, stacks of dusty books, second-rate rings and worn electronics…it’s all there. All junk, but a huge variety of it. The slogan of the shop under the sign outside says that it sells everything and anything, and you’re inclined to believe it. The question is, does it contain the scarf you’re looking for?

You sniff the air and immediately regret it. Jesus hell, when was the last time this place saw a vacuum cleaner? Or air freshener, for that matter? It’s like someone combined the worst qualities of herbal medicine and incense, then sprayed it inside the shop. Rank as hell.

“Eugh,” Michiko sniffs, pinching her nose, “It’s like being in Takai’s room. Has the owner of this place ever heard about organization? No wonder nobody's here.”
>>
“Oi, Airi,” You call to your sister, “You sure your scarf is in here?”

She chews her lip, worry present in her eyes. Her hands are placed inside the pockets of her blazer. They must be trembling, you guess. Never a good sign. “…I think so,” She says, after a few seconds of pause. “I’ve still got a read on its mana signature. It’s definitely somewhere in here. The thing is, there’s magic interference present. Can you feel it, guys?”

You and Michiko nod. That tingling running up your nerves, the tinny, hollow chanting sounding through your ears and that faint, acrid scent of what could only be described as a mixture of wholeness and emptiness. They are all jumbled together. It’s the sensation of mana, plain as day. Michiko is undoubtedly feeling a different sensation to you. Magic is linked to the imagination and the self; therefore all magi perceive magic differently.

It should also be noted that the sense of mana is impossible for the non-magic to replicate. Many have attempted, but none of succeeded. It is like the difference between black and white.

If there’s magic interference in here, it’s either the work of an enemy magus or leaking magic artifacts. You hope that it’s the latter.

“Okay, let’s split up and search.” Michiko announces, clapping her hands. Wait, since when was she in charge? “I’ll check in the back.”

“I’ll look over here,” says Airi, who is already rummaging through the boxes near the entrance. “Onii-chan, can you check near the counter?”

You see no reason to argue. There’s a straight line to your destination, marked by the tables. You follow it. The store counter is wooden, pocked with multiple holes and dents, and covered by a thin, checkered cloth. A banged-up cash register sits on top. Behind the counter you see a row of special stock, along with a plastic chair and the entrance to a hallway. You ring a nearby alarm bell and wait.

You hear rustling coming from the back of the shop. It isn’t long before someone emerges into your view. It’s a man much older than you, with greying hair, sagging skin and dark spots on his cheeks. He reminds you of a stick insect taken human shape: small, thin and a desert shade of brown. His eyes are slanted, like a goat’s.

You narrow your eyes at him. He’s like all the old folks back in the countryside, but twice as seedier. His skin is as oily as fast food grease, too.

“Good day to you, young man.” He says, in a voice like dry reeds. “How may I assist you?”

>“I’m buying a gift for a lady friend. What would be best?”

It might be just you, but this man screams the definition of suspicious. The way his chapped lips moves, the greedy glint in his eyes, that annoying grin of his implying that he knows something you don’t. Still, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, even if it is wrapped in goat skin.

“What’s with all the mana in the air?” You ask.

“Are you a magus?” The old shopkeeper’s eyes light up.

“Yeah. I’m still in school though.”

“That’s no problem! We do not discriminate here. In fact, we sell a variety of magical artefacts,” The old shopkeeper nods at you with great enthusiasm, then directs you to a glass shelf. Inside it are bits and bobs, with price stickers attached to them. A cheap ward has been scrawled on the doors to control mana discharge. It’s not that great, because you can feel it leaking haphazardly. “All cheap, all reliable! Do take a look!”

…what a load of crock. You’ve seen better deals back in country shops. To keep up the pretense, you pretend to be interested in the goods. A rusting teacup, a battered book, a blunt staff and a fading cloth bookmark. They all seem like they’ve had better days. None of them match the descriptions of the stolen objects, the ones you’ve heard about at least. Damn.

“Is there anything you are looking for in particular?” The old shopkeeper’s asks.

“Uh…” You glance around the shop. Out of the corner of the eye, you catch Airi sighing in displeasure at a red sweater. A flash of inspiration hits you like a brick dropped from high. “I’m buying a gift for a lady friend. What would be best?”

“Oho!” A mischievous, knowing smile breaks on the old shopkeeper’s features. “You wouldn’t be talking about those two fine, young lasses over there, would you?” He points over your shoulder. You see Michiko staring at interest at a worn binder of musical sheets and Airi next to her, whispering something. You don't know what you expected from the former.

“Ah, this reminds me of way back then. To be young again…” The old shopkeeper sighs, dreamily. The look of his face is one of euphoria. You are starting to regret answering him.

“So?” he says.

“Pardon?”

“Which girl have you taken an interest in?” He winks a sagging eyelid at you.

“It’s somebody else. And we’re just friends. There’s nothing special between us.” You say, loudly. Not that it matters. The two girls aren’t listening. “She, uh, likes wearing fancy clothes. Know something for her?”

The old shopkeeper mulls over your question, rubbing his gnarled chin with his hand. He smiles at you. “Wait, right here, boy. I believe I have some new merchandise that might interest you.”

“New merchandise. Uh-huh. I’ll be right here.”

“Be back soon.” With that, the old shopkeeper scurries off. You quickly glance over your shoulder. The backs of both Michiko and Airi stiffen. Michiko turns around, meeting your eyes. You nod at her and she does the same back. They join you up front.

“Did you guys find anything?” You whisper.

They both shake their heads. “Nothing we found matched the descriptions.” Airi says.

Shit. “Do you think they might’ve been sold already?”

“I hope not.” Michiko says, her eyes dark, “I promised the girls I would get their stuff back from them and I intend to keep it.”

You think. “They could be multiple shops…”

“A guy like that, rich enough to own multiple shops?” Michiko snorts, “I can’t see it.”

“You never know…”

The rustling of plastic grabs your attention. You see the old shopkeeper bound out of the back room, a cardboard box in hand. He grins at you and your female companions, then places the box on the counter. He lifts the lid, revealing a variety of goods. Hey, doesn’t some of that stuff look kinda familiar?

“Now, I don’t know much about your trends, but you kids like pins, don’t you?” The old shopkeeper says, brandishing a plastic bag. The metal objects inside jangle. “We’ve just got some recently. They look ‘hip’ and ‘trendy’, don’t they?”

“They sure do,” Michiko answers with a smile, one that is strained and masks a set of gritted teeth.

“Take a look at this cloth doll! The perfect gift for any collector! It even comes with its own pretty little dress.”

“There’s mana in that doll.” You say, “Did you know that?”

“Of course! You are a magus; that’s why I’m showing it to you. And now…” The old shopkeeper and rummages through the box one more time, then pulls out his final object. Airi watches it, directing it with far more interest than towards any of the other items in the second-hand store.

“This scarf! It’s old, but the craftsmanship is excellent, oh yes it is. Inspect these patterns. See how there’s nary a frayed thread in sight? The woman who designed this was a fantastic seamstress. She used to be very famous. You don’t see her goods all that often.” He chuckles. “Luckily for you kids, I’m not a greedy man. I’m selling this scarf at half the price you would find it in other shops.”

“That’s a wonderful looking scarf.” Airi remarks, smiling, “Where on earth did you get it?”

The old shopkeeper looks at her, hesitation in his eyes. You don’t miss it. Then it’s gone and his usual grin is back. “It was donated by a charity worker. She needed money to feed her family, see? It was a smart choice. There’s no point in having beautiful clothes if you don’t have food!”

“What did this charity worker look like?” You ask.

“Black-haired.” The old shopkeeper is at a loss for words at first. You notice his breathing increase and his eyes dart towards you and your friends and back again. “Wearing…middle-aged clothes. The ones found in the shops you kids frequent. She looked like a mother. Why do you ask?”

“I’m onii-chan has his reasons,” Airi says, “Say, would you care to listen to a story of ours?”

“That’s…”

“The three of us go to the same academy. It’s one specifically for young magi. Back there, there’s been reports of personal belongings being stolen from changing room lockers. Expensive belongings, such as mobile phones and artifacts needed for magic arts.”

“My condolences.” The old shopkeeper says, “That must have caused no amount of trouble for the school.”

“It has, so we decided to investigate it.”

“Investigate it? Wouldn’t this be trouble for the police? You three look too young for this kind of work.”

“Oh, that’s not important. To track the thief, we decided to plant a trap. I placed my scarf, which has mana inside of it, in a locker and purposefully left it open. When I got back from my classes, I noticed that the scarf was gone.”

“A terrible story, to be sure. That scarf must’ve meant a lot to you.” The old shopkeeper simpers, nodding to show that he understands. But there’s a certain fakeness to his motions, one steeped in tension and nervousness. His fingers are twitching and he’s blinking way too much.

“Yeah, Airi never goes anywhere without it. She gets the shakes.” You remark, “That’s why she placed a tracker in it.”

“And wouldn’t you know sir, the scarf you’re holding looks exactly the same as the one I had.” Airi continues.

“Well, you see…”

“And I recognize those pins! And that doll!” Michiko interrupts, grabbing the items and inspecting them in the air, “Those pins are Natsuki’s! I’d recognize that stupid brand from anywhere. And this is the doll Mio uses for her magic arts!”

Airi smiles at the old shopkeeper. “Sir, would you care to explain this to us?”

“I…I…I don’t know what the two of you are talking about!” The old shrieks. He backtracks, bumping against the counter in his haste. “It’s a just coincidence, that’s what this is. Listen girl, there’s more than one red scarf in this world!”

“Yeah, but how many of those scarves are full of magic?” You ask.

The old shopkeeper stomps his foot against the ground. He probably thinks it’s impressive. The barely audible crack you hear diminishes that effect. He scowls at the three of you and draws himself to his full height. You can hear his withered spine straining itself with the effort.

“You dare come into my shop and throw these ridiculous accusations at me?" he screams, "The nerve of young people these days! I should’ve known you weren’t shoppers! Out of my shop and never come back!”

Ah, it’s one of those kinds of situations. A time waster. The type of situation in which you are starting to grow rather irritated and the thought of violence pops into your head. Plastic bullets may not penetrate like metal ones, but they can still crack ribs and bruise.

“I think you should reconsider your position, old man.” You growl, “Do you know where we come from?”

“I have no interest in knowing!” The old shopkeeper snaps.

“We’re from True Hearts Academy. The one near Miyashita Park. You know, a lot of the kids there come from really influential backgrounds. If word was to get out that we knew the person who stole their goods…”

“I am not afraid of some brats!” the old shopkeeper snarls, but there is fear in his voice. You’ve experience it before and you have delivered it to others. In other words, good.

“So, you refuse to admit anything?” Airi questions. She doesn’t bother to wait for a response. “Well, you might after I show you my final piece of evidence.”

“Final evidence?” The old shopkeeper repeats, nasal and quivering. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, there was somebody who saw the theft from start to finish. Why don’t we ask him?”

“What are you talking about?” The old shopkeeper shouts.

Airi doesn’t respond. Instead, she picks up the scarf and winks at it. “It’s time. You can come out now.” she says.

The shopkeeper looks at her as if she is mad. You and Michiko, on the other hand, know exactly what’s going to happen. The scarf, at first, does not move an inch. Then, it suddenly bounces up into the air. You hear the shopkeeper expel a dry gasp of fright. Without warning or interference from any of you, the scarf curls itself into a little ball. Its threads collapse into a sea of semi-transparent red. Gone is the cloth and all that’s left is an orb of liquid.

A gurgle, throaty and animalistic, resounds from it. Bubbles rise from within and pop upon reaching the surface . The orb of redness makes a few more gurgles and growls, then four stubby legs extend from it. The front part shifts into a head with a gaping front mouth, lined top to bottom with sharp teeth. A tail pops out from the back. The final result, a round canine like creature seemingly made from crimson gunk, drops to the ground. It directs an eyeless glare towards the shopkeeper, then barks. Wisps of energy rise from its back like steam from a kettle.

“W-wh-wha-what in the gods’ names is that?” The shopkeeper shrieks, stumbling back and almost tripping over himself. He lifts a trembling finger towards the canine creature.

Airi reaches down to pat the creature. It responds by squeaking in delight. “This is my spirit partner. He lives as my scarf.” She replies, “His name is Shesmur. Isn’t he cute?”

The creature squeaks again, then barks twice at Airi. Airi nods. She looks up and smiles. It is not one of her usual, sunny smiles. It’s the type of smile she wears when she confronts a pack of bullies in a dark alley or when the two of you are competing over the last slice of pizza. Even though you are not in harm’s way, you can feel the hairs on the back of your neck sticking up.

“Shesmur says he was moved by an unseen force. He also says he was dumped, rather unceremoniously, into this shop. In his words, there is absolutely no doubt that you are the one he was given to.”

“You can speak the language of the spirits?” The shopkeeper chokes. “Well, that’s…you might be lying to us! What you said must be biased!”

Airi sighs. “It’s not that hard to find an unbiased translator, sir.”

“Game over. It’s time for you to fess up.” Michiko snarls, walking forward to the old shopkeeper. The man finally looked like he’s realized the position he’s in. The fact that he’s in a small shop out of the way of the main streets of Shibuya, surrounded by three young magi with violence and disgust in their blood.

“How did you steal the goods?” Michiko demands.

“Wait wait wait!” the old shopkeeper cries. He’s on the ground now, hands behind him as he crawls backwards. His back slams against counter. “I’m not the thief, honest!”

“Do you honestly expect us to believe that?” You say, also stepping forward.

“I’m telling the truth!” The old man wails. “Fine! I admit that I have your goods. But I wasn’t the one who took them!”

“I believe him.” Airi says and her spirit barks in confirmation. “He doesn’t have nearly enough magic capacity to break into our academy.”

The old man nods his head like the world’s fastest lever. “The goods were delivered to me by somebody else! I’m just someone who buys and sells stock. I haven’t committed a single theft in my life!”

“Buying stolen goods is still a crime!” Michiko says, hotly.

“Well, you know, the goods you kids have are always of such high quality…”

The urge to kick this guy is rising. “Then who did you buy the goods from?”

The old man hesitates, his lips trembling. He looks left and right. All clear, apparently. He opens his mouth.

“I don’t know his name, but…”

“But?” Airi prompts.

“He’s from…”

That’s when you see it. Something long and sharp rising from the shadows behind the counter. It crawls along the wooden bench like a snake through glass. You see five stick-like objects along with a plastic hilt. It’s a shadowy hand wielding a sharp knife!

“Look out!”

In an instant, your handgun is deposited out of your ‘space’ and is in your hands. The knife is now positioned above the shopkeeper’s neck, ready to dive down. There’s no time to think. Aim and pray, that's all you can do!

Fire and smoke explodes from the muzzle of your handgun, ejecting the bullet. It grazes the side of the hand, drawing blood. It also causes the hand to flinch, dropping the knife in the process. It sails downwards, tearing through the old shopkeeper’s back. He screams and falls to his side, clutching his wounded back.

“Keiichi!” You hear Michiko shout.

“Watch yourselves!” You yell, “There’s an enemy in here!”

Something slams behind you. Michiko turns around to see that a multitude of similar shadowy hands are covering the door. They overlap each other, like a spiderweb. A filthy, dark aura covers them, reminding of poison and gutter garbage. The four of you are trapped.

“Gugegege…”

A noxious, foul sound, like a dirt-ridden swamp. You whirl back to the front. Your senses are vibrating like crazy. They point to a spike of mana rising from behind the counter. A figure reaches out and drags itself out of the darkness. Humanoid and gray all over, with bulging muscles and sneering eyes. It slams a foot into the chest of the old man, causing him to moan.

“You talked, old man.” The figure rasps. What the hell is this? A toxic spirit? A spirit partner of a nearby magus? Or is it a remotely controlled construct? “I said you shouldn’t talk if you wanted the goods. You son of a bitch…”

“Get away from him!” A trio of throwing knives soar through the dusty air. The figure smirks and dances to the side. The knives slams against the wall and remain still. Airi glares at the figure, more knives locked between her fingers.

“Too slow.” It sneers, waggling its finger.

“She’s not alone.” You fire your handgun. Two bullets miss. One hits, clipping the figure’s shoulder. A sort of black muck sloshes to the floorboards. The figure hisses. It then looks over your sister’s body, starting at her exposed legs and going up. It licks its lips all the while. She shudders. The figure squints at the emblem on her school uniform.

“True Hearts Academy? So you’re their brats, huh?” It chuckles. “Shouldn’t kids like you be at home studying for exams or something?”

“Are you the one who’s been stealing the stuff from the lockers?” Michiko demands.

“Suppose I am?” The figure outstretches its hands. “What do you plan to do about it?”

You hear her teeth clench. Mana gathers in her palms. “I plan on getting payback for my underclassmen, for starters.”

The figure cackles, its dry voice ringing through the shelves and tables. “It’s not my fault those brats were using shit security! Leaving stuff like that around is just waiting for it to be stolen!”

“How did you get into the grounds in the first place?” Airi questions.

“That’s for me to know and you to find out!”

“Well, it’s true we’ll find out when we beat the shit out of you.” You bring up your handgun again, finger already wrapped around the trigger. You then feel something weigh down on your shoulder. It’s Michiko. An intense energy burns within her grip and her mouth is constricted into a straight line.

“Hold up, Keiichi. Let me do this.” She growls, “Those girls back at the academy look up at me, you know. If I don’t get at least one good lick in, I won’t be able to show myself in front of them. Let me handle this, please?”

“Don’t be retarded.” You shoot back. “We’re doing this together, like sensible people.”

“That’s not what I mean, dumbass.” She grumbles, “I just want the first shot. My magic art is good for this and you know it. You and Airi can join in afterwards.”

“Fine…” You roll your eyes. “Just don’t overdo it, okay? Someone’s gotta grab that old guy and drag him back.”

“I’ll do it.” Airi volunteers. “Good luck, Micchan!”

She nods and strides forward. The mana in her palms glows bright. It shifts into a cloud of swirling dust, which then extends into a tube of sparkles and light. Michiko closes her eyes and focuses. She wraps both hands around the tube. Her magic shines around her, illuminating the area around her with in gold and white. The dust sparkles, and the raw mana becomes a shaft of chrome. A black orb, lined with grooves on all sides, forms on top.

Michiko opens her eyes, places her mouth above the newly formed microphone and smiles.

“Testing, testing, one two three…”

“And just who the hell are you, girlie?” The figure tilts his neck to the side, revealing a toothy, smug grin.

“My name is Michiko Tsukiwaki, third-year student and the diva of True Hearts Academy!” The blond girl announces.

“Never heard of you. You must be self-proclaimed, huh!”

“Hmph!” Michiko tosses her hair, her hairclips shining silver and smirks. “I’m not surprised. Trash who lurk in the gutter are always afraid to gaze at the light. And you, you who stole valuables from my friends and underclassmen, are one of the ugliest pieces of trash I’ve seen yet!”

“Ooh, I’m so scared!” The figure hoots, raising its hands in mock surrender. It chortles, its teeth bouncing in their monochrome sockets, “What are you going to do, sing me to death?”

“Actually, yes, I do plan on doing that. You should be grateful! It’s not every day I perform a live!” With that, Michiko spreads her legs apart, placing a shoulder-width gasp. She brings the microphone to her lips, gives the figure a cheeky grin and opens her mouth.

The speed in which the figure’s expression shifts from ‘wow, who does this kid think she is’ to ‘oh god I have made such a big mistake’ is one for the records. Upon Michiko’s shout, a wall of air and sound explodes in front of her, the energy flying directly towards the figure. It’s picked up and slammed against a glass cabinet behind the counter. Shards rain and the artifacts descend, stabbing into and bouncing off the figure’s head. It quickly shakes off the pain and climbs back up, hate visible in the lines on its face.

“Not enough?” Michiko taunts, winking.

“You bitch!” The figure slams its feet on the ground. A pool of shadow gathers and a second, identical figure rises from within. Same build, same gray skin and same furious look. “I’ll rip you apart!”

“I’ll take that as a yes!” Michiko shouts, bringing up the microphone once more. “FA-SO-LA!”

You grunt as the wind blows and both figures are sent flying backwards. God, Michiko’s ‘sound’ magic art is as powerful as ever. It might even be stronger than what you remember from last year. It’s effective, you’ll give her that. And she was courteous enough to avoid the old shopkeeper on the floor.

The two figures are stunned, wobbling on the spot while covering their eardrums. Now’s the perfect time to strike back. You aim down the sights of your handgun at the shadowy figures and press the trigger, emptying your entire magazine.

Meanwhile, Airi rushes forward, scarf fully wrapped around her neck, and makes a beeline for the wounded shopkeeper…

The thing about modern battle academies is that while they sanction and encourage students to mercilessly beat the snot out of each other, they also have restrictions. They vary, but the generally agreed one is that inflicting fatal wounds is grounds for an immediate ban. That is why there are plastic cartridges loaded inside of your magazines instead of metal ones. You’d like to make the argument that plastic bullets can also cause fatalities and the magic flaming swords everything else wields are equally as (if not more) dangerous, but the answer is always something along the lines of ‘deal with it, you school shooter in the making’.

You are not a school shooter. You are a trained marksman, dammit!

Half the bullets fired from your pistol miss. Half of the ones that hit strike the first figure in the torso and shoulders, dropping to the ground. It’s nowhere near a knockout, and before he’s back up again, brandishing two knives.

The second figure runs towards the counter and leaps off it. He dives towards Airi, who has the shopkeeper on her back. Her eyes widen in fright. The second figure cackles, tongue out and curls a fist.

“Looking away? How inconsiderate!”

At the last second, Michiko jumps between the second figure, blocking the punch with her microphone. Metal clashes against fist and a piercing, tinny sound blasts through the air. The second figure swings again. Michiko smashes the blunt end of her stand against the blow, wielding it like a staff.

“Man, looking up close, you’re pretty cute.” The second figure sneers, licking his lips. He throws a string of punches, all of which are blocked by the microphone stand. Michiko grunts and retreats. “Too bad you’ve got such a bitchy personality.”

“At least I don’t get off from stomping on old men!” Michiko brings her makeshift staff up and then swings it down. The second figure jumps backward, clearing the blow with ease. He smirks wide. Then his eyes widen as he sees the microphone orb positioned above his opponent’s lips, again.

“TI-DO!” Michiko screams.

The sound is like an invisible, gigantic fist. The second shadow figure is picked up and thrown backwards, careening through tables and sending all their merchandise scattering through the air.

“Noooo!” Somebody screams from behind you, “MY SHOP!” Oh, it’s just the old shopkeeper. He’s awake. You look behind you to see Airi tending to him, using some of herbal medicines and a makeshift bandage. Well, he did accept the stolen goods and cause you a lot of trouble, so you don’t feel guilty about a little trash.

“Want to continue?” Michiko directs the question towards the two figures. Their backs are hunched, their skin slimy with sweat. Your blonde friend’s tone betrays no small amount of her enjoyment and pride. “There’s a lot more where that comes from.”

“Nah, I think we’re done for the day.” The first figure grunts. He then breaks out into a twisted, contorted and ultimately gleeful smile. The second figure cackles and grabs the cash register. “Too bad what you kids did here was completely meaningless!”

“And how do you figure?” You ask, hands reaching for a fresh magazine from your space.

“Because I’m not actually here! This is all remote controlled bullshit! I’ll just heal up and come back for your throats next time.”

You blink. “You know, you really shouldn’t have said that.”

“Why?”

You jerk a thumb backwards. “Look and see for yourself.”

The first figure looks up. Its jaw slackens. It sees Shesmur barrelling through the air like a softball, mouth wide open. The liquid spirit lands on the figure, teeth first. It clamps down in a bite that could make a tiger piss itself running. Unsurprisingly, the victim screams. It’s almost as loud as Michiko’s magic art.

“OH MY GOD YOU LITTLE PISS DOG YOU PIECE OF SHIT GET THE FUCK OFF ME—”

The figure grabs Shesmur by the tail and flings it with all the force of a baseball pitcher. Shesmur’s body bashes against one of the few untouched glass cabinets, the gooey contents of his body splattering in all directions. Said contents pull themselves together and Shesmur reforms, barking and growling and looking none the worse for the wear.

“You brats are so dead the next time I see you!” The first figure roars. It then sinks into the shadows with its brethren and disappears from sight.

Silence. You put your handgun away. Michiko looks around, eyes wide, then scowls and stomps her feet.

Airi ties a knot in the shopkeeper's bandages, then walks over to Shesmur. The little spirit leaps up to Airi’s arms and crawls up to perch on her shoulder. She pats him on the head. “Did you get his scent?” she asks.

Shesmur barks in affirmation. Airi’s smiles. “Good boy!”

And then Shesmur is a scarf, curled around Airi’s neck as if nothing had happened.

“Nice one, Airi!” Michiko cheers. Her microphone fades back into mana. She runs up to your sister and grabs her wrist. “Now we can go after the bastard!”

Is that really the right course of action, though?

You are torn. On one hand, calling the police sounds like the sensible thing to do. Punch in a couple of numbers, explain the situation and kick back and relax for the rest of the day. Ditch the responsibilities into the hands of the adults. Maybe you could challenge Michiko to karaoke and win. Then you could stop by and visit the snow ice parlour Satan set up in hell, too.

Yet, when you consider it some more, when has anything in the past year been sensible? You try to remember. Nope, your daily life at True Hearts Academy had been a long stretch of classes and misadventures, in which you drove vans without a license, dismantled guns, held people hostage and accidentally walked into the girls’ changing room—sometimes all on the same day. And you always, always came out alive with your sister by your side. Fate had been protecting you, it seemed. Either that, or it was a huge sadist and tossing you around like a rag doll.

You sigh.

“I get the feeling if we don’t take care of this guy now, he’ll come back to attack us later. And then we’ll all be involved in whatever bullshit fate has decided for us.” You say, “Screw it, let’s just go after him. If I’m going to fight him and some point, I want it over and done as soon as possible.”

“Alright!” Michiko cheers, “Keiichi, I knew I could count on you. Airi, where’s the sucker?”

“Somewhere in Udagawa.” Your sister replies, “Let’s go!”

“Wait a minute!” The weary, old shopkeeper cries, “What about my shop!”

“Don’t worry, the police are coming to sort it all out,” Airi says, mobile phone in hand. All the color drains from the old man’s cheeks, giving him a resemblance to a ghost trapped in the middle of a snowstorm. “You’ll be telling them the truth, of course.”

“Like I said earlier, we know there’s a lot of kids from influential families in our academy.” You warn. Makoto's smiling face pops into your head, “And they’re all pissed at whoever’s been stealing their stuff.”

“So don’t go telling any fibs!” Michiko makes the peace sign and sticks her tongue out, “Bye!”

With that, the three of you depart for Udagawa.

about it, with its graffiti and niche record shops. Concrete is rarely bare in the area. If it’s not drawn on with spray paint, it’s cracked or slapped with an O-East concert poster. It’s not uncommon to find delinquents, geared in the latest punk gear, lurking around in the street corners.

You, Airi and Michiko burst onto the scene at full pelt, drawing more than a few heads your way. Luckily, they avoid you. The sun is setting, but there’s still a fair amount light and you avoid the shadows. Shesmur’s tracking senses draw you towards an apartment building. Tall, flaking and dirty. The front reception is deserted and there’s no lift. There’s a ramp, which you all take up.

Fourth floor, apartment number 405. You and the rest stand in front of it, gasping for breath. It’s an ordinary looking door, secured by a passcode and a lock. You can’t detect any traps within the vicinity, but nonetheless you feel uneasy. The adrenaline is wearing off, it seems. “Hey Airi, can you blow off the lock with one of your tags?”

“Wouldn’t that be causing property damage, onii-chan?”

“Eh, they’ll probably ignore it.” Michiko snorts, gesturing with her hand, “Just like the two dozen other times you two have run amok.”

“You don’t have to rub it in, Micchan,” Airi pouts. She takes out one of her exploding tags and attaches it to the door. The paper sizzles and sparks, then detonates in a small, red explosion. Dust and metal fly everywhere. You cough once, before reaching forward and pushing open the door. You see a hallway with all the lights off. It’s completely bare, all plaster walls and no furniture.

“Be careful, guys.” You mutter, “I don’t like the look of this place.”

You take a single step into the apartment and that’s when things go very wrong. Your vision swims. Black spots appear on the corner of your vision. A tortured moaning escapes from the depths of your throat. In a flash, Airi is by your side, supporting you by the shoulders and asking you what’s wrong. Michiko joins her. It’s a mistake, all of it.

The door slams behind you. Then it sinks into the wall and disappears from sight. The walls tremble, as if made from gelatin. They slink backwards, expanding the hallway. Smaller ones rise from the ground, creating nook, crannies and passageways. The air is clogged with dust, or a magic equivalent to it. It’s filling your lungs, crawling up your nostrils and befuddling your senses.

A maze. You realize what is going on. You’ve been trapped inside a spirit domain, one constructed by the owner of this apartment. It’s just like the time against the giant fire-breathing chicken.

That recollection is familiar. With it, it gives you comfort. You take a deep breath, suppressing the jumble of emotions inside of you. You will your own magic to dominate the lesser forces around you, to create a space for your body to operate in. It’s all very simple stuff. Your mentor taught you it in one of her first lessons. Besides you, Airi and Michiko are doing the same.

“A foreign domain…” Airi mutters, “I shouldn’t be surprised.”

“Well, I guess that makes finding him simple.” Michiko remarks. “He has to be somewhere in here.”

You nod. A domain always has its master present. The most straightforward way of leaving a domain is to simply defeat its master. If you traverse this maze long enough, you are sure to run into the clothing thief.

“Come on, let’s go.”

You are about to guide your companions forward and that’s when you hear a high-pitched beeping noise. It’s coming from above. You all look up to see a red light pulsing from a rafter in the ceiling, placed above a black PA box.

“Testing….testing…testing, one two three!” Oh god, it’s him. You’d recognise that throaty, sandpaper-like voice from anywhere. “Good afternoon to you, you fucking idiots. I can’t believe you three actually wandered into my domain. It’s like taking candy from a baby!”

“Hey, do you expect us to answer back?” You say.

“Actually, we came in here on purpose.” You state. Then you summon your shotgun and fire at the PA system. The machine breaks apart in an explosion of sparks and metal. Airi gives you a look. “Onii-chan, was that wise?”

“Keiichi probably got tired of his voice,” Michiko remarks, “I don’t blame him. It's so ugly! That’s one guy who’ll never be a singer.”

The ground rumbles. You hear muffled stomping incoming from all directions. Everyone takes the chance to equip themselves with their weapons. You with your shotgun, Airi with her katana and Michiko with her microphone. Mana buzzes through the circuits in your body, filling you up with the energy of the hunt.

Sections of the surrounding walls break down to reveal a bunch of grey-skinned figures. They’re just like the ones you fought in the shop: shadowy, balding and without any sort of distinguishing features. The difference is that these ones don’t have the light of sentience in their eyes. Familiars, you guess.

They howl and leap at you. You press the trigger and blast the nearest pair with buckshot. They collapse in a heap. Airi slashes once, severing a shadow figure in half. It screams, then its body crumbles into dust. Michiko breathes in, then shouts. Four shadowy figures are sent tumbling down the hall, a pair of humanoid bowling balls.

"Eat this!"

"Shesmur, I need more throwing knives!"

"DO-RE-MI!"

You and your friends continue the assault. You aim down the sights and fire, occasionally stopping the reload and shove the nearest figure with your gun. Airi dashes and slices. Michiko exercises her throat, setting off strings of explosions that would make a wind god grow green with envy. The shadowy figures fall like dominoes, but for every one that is fallen two more take their place.

“Goddamn!” You growl in frustration, “They’re like zombies!”

“That’s the best comparison you could come up with?” Michiko shouts. A shadowy figure tries to shoulder her into a corner. She twirls her stand and jabs it in the spot between the legs. It goes down, clutching the throbbing spot.

“Onii-chan, we should move!” Airi slashes with all her might and a row of shadow figures crumble. A break in the horde is made. The three of you power through it. The shadow figures follow. You can hear them over your frantic footsteps, their screaming, warbling cries of anger and hate.

Are you guys even going in the right direction? Damn it, these shadow bastards are such a pain! You spin around, fire a few rounds from your rifle. Three figures crumble. Is it just your imagination, or did nothing come to replace them?

This happens and you find the entrance to the master’s room. You can tell, because the door stands out from the rest of the maze with its plush velvet coating, golden handles and an overall gaudy appearance. It’s fake, all of it.

The question is, what condition are you and your friends in?

You and Airi are mostly fine. A couple of scratches here and there. There’s a bruise on your shoulder, but it’s nothing a night’s rest can fix. One of the perks of being is a magus is accelerated healing rates, which comes from magic’s innate superhuman gifting qualities. Michiko is coughing a bit, which isn’t fantastic for her art. She did sing a lot back in the hallway. Maybe you’ll buy her some cough drops after this. Other than that, she’s mostly fine.

“Ready, onii-chan?”

“Yeah.”

You and your sister grab the golden handles and wrench the door open. You enter into a round room. This one is actually illuminated. Fluorescent lights, secured in plastic tubes, flicker from their spots on the ceiling. They reveal rows and rows of boxes, placed on top of metal shelves. Some are fastened shut, others have their contents spilling out. The shelves all being from the sides and run towards the middle of the room.

In the center, the largest cluster of mana is there. The thief, the master of the domain. He’s a hooded figure. His face is obscured and his clothes are plain and tattered. There are holes in his jeans. In the dim light, you can make out late-night stubble and a set of worn, rough hands. He’s sitting in a lone chair.

“Damn, took the two of you long enough.” He smirks, “Ready for the big showdown, brats?”

>Shoot him. Shoot him now.
>“Could you stop acting like a bigshot? You aren’t even on the top of the list.”
>“Ready to use your head and surrender?”

It is there and then you decide that no, you are not ready for a big showdown. Even with your tolerance levels, there is a limit to the amount of bullshit a man can take. This guy may have a life story; he may have a motivation that, when spun correctly, could move an entire theatre of movie critics to tears. You are neither willing to listen nor talk. The only patience you have will be spent on the bullets of your guns.

Thus, you summon your rifle, set the mode to automatic and pull the trigger.

“The fact is—” The man says. That’s all he gets out before thirty plastic bullets batter into his chest. A choked, wounded and betrayed sound bursts from his mouth before he is thrown back. His head slams against a shelf. A box falls and bounces off his head. Another follows. Before long, the man is buried beneath a heap of cardboard and artificial spirit domain constructs.

You switch out the magazine and point the gun at the heap. You breathe in and out, waiting for him to get up so that you can pull the trigger a second a time. The room grows quiet. It’s consumed by an overpowering silence. Every bead of sweat that rolls down the side of your head feels as heavy as a lead weight.

It takes Airi tapping you on the shoulder to snap out of it. “Onii-chan…” she begins.

“What?”

“I think he’s beaten.”

You stare at her, incredulous. “What?” You repeat.

Airi points to the walls. “It’s all fading away, see?”

She’s right. The imagery of the domain is breaking down. The supernatural is being replaced with the normal. When everything stops twisting and turning around you, you realize that you are in a dimly-lit living room. Dusk is shining through a nearby window. Your two female companions are with you. In front, slumped against a TV, is the same man from the shelf room. His hood is down and you can see his face.

“Ew, he’s drooling.” Comments Michiko, frowning at him.

“Why are there so many boxes in here…” You mutter, going over and opening one of them at random. Inside is a uniform from your school, along with a bunch of other expensive-looking clothes. “Ah, I guess this confirms it. This guys really is the thief.”

Michiko opens another one. “All of this is valuable,” she says, “Wow, is this the new Nova Style skirt? That’s worth more than ten thousand yen.”

“So…” You say, taking in the situation, “This is it.”

“It seems that way.” Airi replies. “Are you feeling like you were expecting something more? I am, too.”

“I think he expected the familiars to wear us down so that he could finish us off easily.” You say, “He didn’t expect us to actually beat all of them.”

“Assault rifles sure come in handy,” Michiko says. She puffs her chest out and flicks her hair. “Of course, a lot of was due to my—”

“Wait!” Airi hisses.

“Now what?" Michiko complains.

“Don’t you feel that? Something is coming!”

You and Michiko tense up. Airi is right. It’s coming from the space above the television. Magic is gathering there. It’s forming a circle of runes, protecting a swirling purple portal. Weapons flash into your hands. You raise your shotgun and curl your finger on the trigger.

A being emerges from the portal. It’s a small black spirit, shaped like a backpack of all things. Strapped to its arms are various weapons, all of which look like they were made in a particularly violent DIY course. It lands on the ground with a bounce, blinking its bright yellow eyes.

You then watch as the spirit completely ignores you and your friends in favour of inspecting the unconscious thief. It reaches out to brush the man across the cheek with a feeler. It then slaps the man back and forth a dozen times. Surprisingly, the man does not wake up.

The spirit retrieves a scrap of parchment from its back. Words, none of which are of human origin, are scrawled in thick black ink. A red seal marks the bottom. The spirit then takes out a lighter and sets the parchment aflame. It quickly crumbles into ash. The remains are deposited on the unconscious man’s chest, without ceremony or word.

The spirit jumps onto the television. It turns around, then nods at the three of you. It crouches, its legs like springs and leaps. It disappears into the portal, which vanishes in a flash.

“…I guess his spirit mentor wasn’t too happy with him.” Airi remarks, “His contract was destroyed. That's a heavy level of punishment.”

“Will it stop him for good?” Is Michiko’s question.

“Mmm, I hope so.”

“That’s more or less a yes from you, Airi." Michiko then takes out her smartphone—a small hunk of metal wrapped in a pink plastic cover and decorated in sparkles and sequins. “Police?” she asks.

You nod. “Police.”

After leaving the matters to the adults, you all decide to take the rest of the day off. Airi looks ready to protest the moment you suggest this, but sighs and relents. There’s not much you could do at school, and she knows it. At the very best, you’d barely manage to make the last period.

You end up having an afternoon snack in one of Shibuya’s many department stores, second floor.

“Shit.” You say through a mouthful of chilli dog.

“What?” asks Michiko, putting her yogurt down.

“I didn’t get that guy’s name.”

“Keiichi, I don’t think it was even that important.”

And that'll end it for today. That ending was anticlimactic, I admit. But my time was running out and I didn't feel like having it spill over to the next thread. It probably wouldn't have been that interesting, anyway. Plus, the first couple of tasks are meant to be easy...right?

Some of you may have figured out that I started today's session an hour early. I blame daylight saving for this. Don't worry, I'll make the times clear in the upcoming weeks.

Michiko's magic art has finally been revealed. Hooray! It's based on sound and song. She's more like a siren than a banshee, though. Her music is loud, but it sounds good to others. As for Airi's and Keiichi's, you'll probably find them out in the near future.

See you guys next Friday, on the 7th of October. There's a new character I'm looking forward to introduce, so I'm rather excited. The session will start in a new thread, on 9:00 pm UTC. If there are any changes to this they'll be posted on my Twitter.

I'm also considering posting little snippets of backstories in the days between sessions, since /qst/ is so slow and everything. That'll depend how much time I have left over from preparing the next session, though.

Oh yeah, and if there's anything that could be improved in my quest don't hesitate to tell me.

sounds like a cool idea. I just caught up on the thread, sorry I couldn't be around earlier.

The only way to get a better girl than going full sousuke is to go full Kurtz, and I don't feel like risking another Year of Dead Snipers, so that's out.
