The wind blows soft over the trees, making the leaves fall over the floating islands, the land of your people. Rivers flow from the islands to the bottomless abyss.
Over a long time, the elves lives through small hunter-gatherer communities, using their ancient magic and geographical isolation to successfully protect themselves of enemies but now, everything is different, the discovery of agriculture and beast taming has made a population boost and they need a structure society to survive the hardships of life.

Communism where Chocolate is more equal than Vanilla which is more equal than Caramel.

This is based on average knife ear size for each group, if you want more rights grow longer ears.
>>
>>652095
This is because long ears are a near universal sign of virility/fertility for elves who have come to prize such traits due to their horrid birth rate.

Thus, all other concerns being equal, their society must prioritize the needs of those likeliest to bear offspring. Every one gets what they need, but long-ears are more comfortable.

This isn't my magical realm.... I just like plausible explanations

The state starts forming. Although we need social stratification,We should not succumb to a heartless class society that enslaves the masses and generates internal flights. The elves with the pointiest ears are chosen to rule, their big ears show fertility, thus a bigger manpower to ensure order and unity among the elf race. There are a few clans that have pointy ears and the elfs need to choose which one will rule their future

You send some scouts to explore you island. After one day they bring back a description of the land. The island you live in is, by far, the biggest one around. Beyond the civilisation, there is a deep forest and some rivers cutting the island, they find monkey pigs gigantic lizards, animals that are usuallu hunt down by your people. The neighbouring floating islands seem to have differemt plants and animals, each one serving as a tiny micro biome. Some quilometres ahead you see a circle of mountains that delimit the abyss and the floating islands area. The other islands are close to yours but not enough to jump from one to another.. not even from a tree. a building that connect the islands would be possible but the scouts are not sure if we have enough technology to create a stable bridge. over that time the population grows and the gigantic birds research gets closer to end (2 days((now in days)))

Focusing all your efforts towards the task of taking the giant predatory birds of the land pays off!

Erashia Swift-runner accidentally falls into the back of a giant colorful falcon while attempting to hand feed it.

Hanging on for dear life she is carried all the way back to the giant falcon' s communal best.

Given up for dead your entire community is surprised when less than a day later Erashia returns atop a tame and docile Mega-Falcon.

The Northern island is dominated buy a gigantic Lake filling the northernmost portion of the island and spilling off into the endless steps below. Your Scouts make landfall on the plains south of the lake. The land here is filled with easy hunting, more so even than your home Island. The Northern best has no trouble feeding itself, but is limited in the amount of food it can bring back to the home island.

At home the number of elves taming mega-Falcon s begins to soar.

Faced with dwindling food your people band together to share amongst themselves. Your Hunters worked day and night to provide fresh meat 4 the ever-expanding bird population. Driven by the imperative need for food, and unwilling to even consider giving up their feathered friends your people rise to the occasion!

Caslaa Wind-Song a prominent caramel elf of far above average ear length organizes her clan to action and in less than a month her efforts bear fruit... literally.

Ordering people to craft simple wooden troughs all the way from the river, Caslaa somehow convineed the water to run through them. Uphill, downhill, and across all sorts of terrain the water flows steadily to your people who are at first confused.

Only when a great food bearing orchard springs up in the middle of your hometown, sung into existence from seeds by dozens of Caslaa clan mages do your people truly rejoice. The ever abundant trees require careful tending, but they will feed all of your people and then some.

In the North a hunter reports a strange occurrence.

Consensus on build?

The apparition stares at you seemingly uncomprehending for minutes on end.

Just as you are about to give up hope her mouth pops open like a dolls and perfect elves words issue forth in a languid fashion.

"Who are? Not men are?"

Slowly more and more of the bizarre creatures begin emerging from the lake their dark eyes drinking in the sight of you. Many of them have adopted strange, hideous round eared forms.

The head creature perhaps hoping to make you more at ease fluidly shifts into a female even form with... well... ludicrously long ears!

One of your men giggles nervously at the sight.

>What do you want to say?

The ludicrously proportioned lake woman listens intently to your words her dark eyes staring at you as unreadable as the abyss, no facial expressions Mar her placid features as she considers your words.

Finally over half a minute after your speech halts she speaks again in her strange parody of regular communication.

"We have never met elves. We do not know Caslaa. We know only here, only this. We cannot survive the longfall and so are trapped. We are water that is. The men who were had words for us. [Elemental] they called us in their strange burning tounge. Will you do as they did and seek to entrap us?"

Listening serenely to your questions the [elemental] responds in its lazy voice.

"We have been gifted with the all speech by the one who bound us."

At the mention of this person many of the larger [elementals] shift uncomfortably, and the waves around your makeshift raft surge. Thankfully you hurry the conversation along before capsizing.

"We found a crack in our prison. We pushed on it every day for many days. One day the crack broke, and with it the men that were broke as well. Ever since it has been as you see now. We above, them below."

"We are all here who are us."

A quick count shows their numbers to be 47 with 5 smaller offspring whose forms are almost featureless. As you watch a young [elemental] tries to look like you misshapen ears jutting out of its head at strange angles before it collapses into the lake, only to rise out again as formless as before.

"Tell us Elves, what are you? Where do you come from? We have seen you walk through the air like our cousins, but also you walk on the ground like our cousins? How is this done? Now you walk with water as we do. Do you also walk with fire as our cousins do?"

World information

>magic

The original prompt mentions several types of magic, but doesn't really elaborate on them. Therefore I will talk a bit about it here.

Magic in this setting can broadly be separated into two general types. The first is natural magic which is inherent to a race. In your case this is beastmastery and greensinging. The first allows you to bond with animals, and makes animals you are bonded with faster, smarter, stronger and better in almost every way. The second allows you to manipulate plants causing them to grow and change to suit your needs.

Neither of these disciplines is quite as all inclusive or powerful as druidic traditions, but the entry bar is much, much lower as well. This is evidenced by the fact that practically your whole population has low level beastmastery or can at least bond with an animal when assisted.

The second type of magic is traditional magic or wizardry. This magic has been developed over time by studying the elements and [elementals]. Any race can learn at least one type of traditional magic, but learning another type becomes much harder. The sky elves are currently leaning towards Water or Air.

[Elementals] can treat traditional magic as natural magic, but never gain access to another path, or higher complexities of spell.
>>
>magic continues

The traditional elements are as follows: air, earth, fire, water, light, and dark

Outside of the traditional standard format some races have access to strange magical powers most notably demonic, or celestial powers, and necromancy.

Learning new magic requires a d100 roll the base difficulty of which is based on your magic stat. The more grey marks, the harder it is. Base DC is 10 per Mark. So if you have a 5 in the magic stat the base DC for a simple spell is 50.

Learning an entire tradition of magic takes more than a single roll. As does moving to a more complex understanding of a path of magic.

Natural magic while more limited in scope is also much easier to learn because you are suited to it. Learning new applications rarely takes more than one success.

Upgrading a natural magic into a traditional magic is possible, but it is a hurdle equivalent to learning a traditional magic.

To whit, you can combine and upgrade beast mastery and greensinging into druidry. However not every elf will be capable of making that jump, and it will take a long time. Only you can decide if it's worth it.
>>
>technology

Magic for the masses, technology can be developed just like magic can. However instead of being codified into paths, branches, or whathaveyou technology consists of discreet singular improvements to your civilization. These improvements can be disseminated throughout your civ within a turn for most empire's. At this point speed of information isn't a large concern. You are also by no means limited to real world physics. This is a world with floating islands. It is unlikely that your tech will follow anything close to real world examples.

Also you can simply roll tech for things your civilization could presumably do with their current tech level. For example, the sky elves do not posses any level of seafaring, but a high roll on a d100 let them realize the obvious fact that lots of wood floats. Hence a raft.

Feel free to combine magic and tech to achieve the previously unachievable.

I'd also suggest making hide coats lined with feathers for the impending winter months and heavy rains.

Couple more people to vote please.

>B) We wear clothing made from the feathers of assorted birds. When a young elf bonds with a MegaFalcon he/she adds some of its new companion's feathers to his/her clothing. This is an extremely important rite of passage for the elven people as it marks the transition from childhood to adulthood in elven culture. It is forbidden for one to add the feathers of a MegaFalcon which one has not bonded with to one's attire...

Running for a while on and off today.

The ludicrously proportioned woman nods once at your words. Already most of the [elementals] are fading back into the lake. Soon only the one you have come to think of as their leader remains.

"Then you are good to have elves people! We do not know what type of people you will be, but you are better than those below."

Her curiosity apparently satisfied the [elemental] fades away back into the lake.

Over the next few weeks the [elementals] grow slightly bolder appearing occasionally to hunters in the north. Your people get the overall impression that the water [elementals] are for the most part a languid, the unkind would say lazy, species.

Your hunters have also begin to compete with one another in elaborate displays of aerial hunting. Often shooting birds out of the sky while both they and their prey are in flight! Complaints of your traditional bows lack of proper range have begun to circulate. Set to the task by her mate young Caslaa Rain-Eyes has developed a bow sung directly out of a free! Will you build your structure of

Or of

>green sung wood (5 turns)

This counts as one turn.

You have sent flyers east in search of new lands. Your first sky rider Erashia Swift-Runner clearly longs to go with them the thrill of new lands quickening her blood as nothing else. However, the needs of the people are held above all other concerns, and there is much to be done if the young are to be taught proper flight technique.

Your people bring back two strange reports from the east.

The largest isle of the East is a mountainous Crag I'll suited for game or field. Your scout scoffs at the idea, but some claim to have seen carvings and designs etched into the rock faces. One elf says he saw what clearly looked like a door. His scout leader assures you he is a short eared fool fit only to hunt large game.

The second report comes from the scout leader himself. A plume of black smoke as from a fire was observed coming from /below/ the cloud cover that blankets the land below you.

There's argument amongst the designers in what to use but they come to the conclusion to not harm the local forests and believe green sung wood is better than regular. This caused a small squabble with the builders who believed although green sung wood looks better it would be a waste of magical ability and take longer to do. It was split 5/3.

blew it out of the water! (on a pc at current so updates are a bit easier)

Caramel elves from clan Caslaa begin working with your artisans to form the flight school from still living roots close to the nest on your home island. Even in its half finished state the building is by far the most elaborate structure on the island. oval openings have been intentionally left in the walls as windows to be covered later with brightly dyed and cured hides. The hunters and people of your village work together to begin furnishing the school with down filled cloth seating cushions and wooden furniture.

>time till completion 3 turns

Caslaa Free-Tongue has even devised the most clever methods of joining wood. Interlocking cuts, the use of small wooden pins, and many others. The sages of Clan Caslaa are praising his efforts and clamoring to learn the techniques themselves, only to be pushed to the back of his lectures by the carpenters and craftsmen of your culture.

Your scouts once again return from the east with a strange tale. This time as you listen you can scarce believe what you are hearing.

According to the reports of Erashia Long-Legs the smoke was observed coming from some form of artificial vessel!

As far as the scouts could determine the floor of the world is a vast ocean of water dotted here and there with islands that float in the water much the way your islands float in the air. Upon this vast... lake thing was a wooden craft with large cloth drapes billowing in the wind. Your scouts observed that some of the cloth drapes were on fire and that people, of some type, were frantically running around on board the craft.
They report that they can easily return to the vessel within half an hours time, but are unsure of what to do.

Your scouts fly with swiftness to the slow moving wooden vessel. Not until closing with it do they notice that it is much larger than the largest building on your island. The strange people aboard are too preoccupied with the fire to notice you at first, and by the time they look up from frantically dipping water out of the ocean you are upon them.

Caslaan green singers act in concert to raise water from the ocean to drench the cloth drapes instantly extinguishing the fire.

The people on board the craft seem startled and many point strange almost-bows in your direction! Before an incident can occur a strange looking man with the shortest ears you have ever seen runs out from a door and begins bellowing in an odd guttural language. Through frantic gestures and hand motions he conveys to your scout leader that he would like to return with them.

Lunch break incoming.

The leader of this water vessel manages to introduce himself as "Roderik" whoever these people are they apparently have no clan name? or perhaps that is his clan name and he has not earned a personal name? how could that possibly be when everyone on the vessel seems to defer to him?

The man, if man he be, climbs gingerly onto your scout leaders MegaFlacon. A short flight later reveals that this race certainly experiences fear. The man collapses onto the ground of your island and crawls, white as snow, away from the edge before shakily gaining his feet.

Potunid Sweet-Voice is overjoyed to speak to the man. After decades of settling minor elven disputes, and having found water [elementals] to be infuriatingly lazy in speech his stream of excited elven is clearly far too much for the man to keep up with.

Amazingly however he responds in what is far and away the worst accented elven you have ever heard.

"We [Human]. Not enemy. Need [oh fuck how do you say that]... Roof? Enemy is... down. Make fire on [ship]"

The man seems very frustrated by his inability to speak in a more clear fashion. Sweet-Voice for his part is overjoyed even at this simple communication.

>what would you like to ask the [human]?

currently you outnumber both of the races you have met by decisive margins, but they outclass you in different ways.

Also you breed slowly so any loss of population is felt more strongly. cautious isn't bad, neither is aggressive.

Questions about the hideous stranger fly from a multitude of onlookers. The speech seems to confuse and upset this Roderick who hold up his hands and speaks a apoligetically in his strange guttural language.

After much back and forth between the [captain] and your diplomat you learn many things you were unaware of before.

Roderick is a [captain], which is a unit of rank, of the vessel you helped to save which is called the [spirit of adventure].

The Captain further explains that he and his crew are from a city, which is a very large village, far to the east of here. He claims that there is a vast ocean of water below dotted with islands. As proof of this he pulls out an ornate cylinder of shiny material. As the people of your village gather around the captain uncaps the cylinder and reveals a flat substance much like pounded bark! More remarkable yet is that he has used careful dye to mark different lands!

The islands you already know of do not appear on the [map]. Roderick points out where he came from, a dot labeled [Vale], and where you found his ship. It seems he has come halfway across the ocean. Upon being asked Roderick states that the vessel below is like a moving village.

Roderick explains that almost all of the islands below belong to either [demon] cults or [celestial] concerns. Indeed you notice that almost every island is marked with one of two strange symbols. Apparently an island that they had considered safe was overrun with [demons] to whine they are very opposed. The [demons] set fire to their [sails]. The captain claims that these [demons] are the enemy of all living things.
>>
>>668574
Roderick claims that between his men and your flying [army] you could easily sweep the [demon] menace off of the island below. With a safe place to rest his ship he seems confident that repairs will be done quickly.

The captain pulls a string of beautiful shining beads made of [glass] with measured amounts of [gold] embedded within. He says that this is [money] and that it can be used to [purchase] many things, anything really. He offers you twenty and five strings of ten for your assistance.

>sounds fair

Captain Roderick is clearly overjoyed to hear your decision speaking enthusiastically in Human at Potunid Sweet-Voice.

According to the captain the Human language is widely used in the world below as a [trade] language.

The captain endures what is for him another harrowing flight back to his ship, promising that his men will be ready in a week after they have healed and repaired their [armor].

The Falcons of the deceased elves are quietly put to death, and a funeral is held for their bond mates. A pall hangs over both of your communities for many days afterwards, and some elves begin avoiding the lake on the northern isle. The sky's themselves seem to match the mood as early autumnal showers darken the skies and drive people indoors.

On the ocean below the Spirit of Adventure seems to be having a more difficult time as the storms are much more severe near the ocean. Work on the ship has ground to a halt as she can barely maintain her position in the torrential rains. Without the aid of your greensingers and craftsmen it is uncertain if the repairs could be completed at all. After a weeks worth of work however the ship is in much better shape. As the storms lessen from apocalyptic to merely severe the crew expresses their gratitude by swapping stories with your craftsmen. Some few of the rough sailors speak a form of elven even rougher than the captain's and between this and plenty of hand gestures communication is possible.

The captain seems very favorably impressed both with your assistance, and gifts. He takes the time to introduce your people to his ships [priest] a dour looking bald man who seems intensely unhappy at the current situation.

Despite his unhappiness the [priest] takes time every day that week to travel back with your returning craftsmen. He seems no happier about flying than captain Roderick was, but for some reason insists. Every evening for several hours he teaches your community his language, and reads to them from a large metal bound book. His pedantic lectures are mostly unintelligible to you people, but he claims they are of vital importance.

While this occurs, an incident of a far more sinister nature happens in the North.

Several of your foraging elves are approached by water [elementals] asking them for help. After some explaining it seems that three of their children have gone missing. The [elementals] don't seems nearly as concerned as an even parent would be, but for the normally passive race to have proactively asked for assistance is highly unusual.

Several days later your longest eared sages are utterly shocked by a presentation from Caslaa Fire-Brow.

It seems he has not only kidnapped three of the water [elemental] children, but he has found a way to kill one. He claims to have used the child's soul orb to make radical advancements in magic. As his peers watch stunned at his announcement and actions he produces water from thin air and forms it into all manner of shapes before flinging the mass as a storm of razor sharp ice shards at a target.

He claims greater revelations to come.
He seems convinced that the [elementals] are a threat to everyone.
