You've completed one goal!

Sort of. Maybe.

You can probably check it off thelist, anyway. Halfway.

You've arranged- or are in the middle of arranging, really- a new spear for yourself. Two new spears. One fancy, magical, and probably all sorts of sparkly and whatnot- And the other the sledgehammer equivalent of a spear, something large and atrociously heavy and fireproof.

Maybe you should skip the point and go for a battering ram.
Did battering rams have points?

You think so, but they're not really modern- Or they are now, bit that's kind of moot and really-

"Lass?"
"Hmm?"

"Ya kinda started muttering to yourself and staring into space."
"Ah."

You scratch your head and shrug.

"I accept, yes."
"You accept?"
"The metal silk for a spear. I think I might be able to work the red metal. Or whatever alloy I need to. I am very fireproof."
"My gloves are very fireproof, but that doesn't really cut it."

"I can make magma, yes."

"That'd probably cut it."

That has to be at least three-quarters of a check mark, now.

Good Afternoon, and welcome to a quest about a young woman who dies and wakes up with a great deal more limbs than she had before.

We've recently had a small recap, though it skims a lot of events in favor of brevity.

Just a heads up, to vote on threads in the /qst/ archive you'll need to replace archive.html with qstarchive.html.

>>
woo, I'm home! no more phone posting!

>>659125
I feel like we should have a doomsday counter going for how far mom is away.

I mean, it only took us, what, a couple weeks to get here? Going at a SLOW CARAVAN pace?

And we've been here a few days? How many days exactly?
>>
So would a lance work for us? We are quite strong and we are our own mount. And we tended to break our spear a lot.
>>
>>659144
I thought LL unified the archives so we wouldn't have to track the /tg/ and /qst/ threads separately.

A lance would work about as well as any other vaguely pole shaped object.

We're really getting to the point where a battering ram might be a better option.

Maybe we can just wield a tree or column?
>>
>>659178
A tree would be like glass for the things we fight and the power we have.

A ram is not meant to be carried by anyone, and rams are meant to tear up big doors, nothing else.

Maybe a lance with a sword in the tip, so a really big nanigata?

As mentioned before we do have the cash, we can try several weapons and see what works better.
>>
>>659194
we need one of those unbreakable monkey king poles

Then we can just poke people with it so hard it works as a spear anyway

If we were going to do something like that, we could probably get an anchor and rework the front hooks into extra length or a thick 'blade'.
>>
"Is there anything you need, yes? To start on the spear?"
"Nah. Just bring a pile of that silk by later. A week. A few days. Soon."

He's already rolling up his sleeves, tucking his silk sample away into his apron pocket.
"I'm getting started now. Damn. Woulda brought some of the apprentices if I knew I'd be working- Gonna haveta do everything myself-"

His voice fades away as he rumbles back into his apartment, muttering and talking to himself as he goes.
Why was he even complaining then? He is doing the same thing, you aren't strange at all.

You huff a bit before you depart yourself, clattering down stoneclade streets, making your way through the burgeoning crowds towards the marketplace.

Or maybe you're making crowds. By forcing people- Frightening people to the sides as you march.
It's irritating, but you're willingto forgive that much for the sake of convenience- Whow ants to wait patiently behind slow moving crowds to sightsee?

You can just walk where you will, and the people part before you, like.... Parting things.

In any case, it speeds your walk by a significant margin, and you're deep into the market proper, browsing between huge scrolls of something, more cloth than you've ever seen and a whole lot of stalls hawking... everything. Just, everything.

Food and clothes and candles and books and toys, merchants and salesmen and everything in between.

It's dizzying.

You have your priorities, though. You need metal. Red metal, whose name you don't know.
Priorities.

While we are talking weapons, has anyone brought up halberds yet? They were widely used for good reason. Stab with the spike, chop with the blade, and grapple with the thorn. Them's some formidable options.

Lyra could probably wield a really big one with terrifying results.

Oh, and going for a simply massive tree-like object is stupid without anything to grip. I don't care how strong Lyra is, that just does not work on so many levels.

Huzzah, spiders!

Also, given Kay's difficulties with the GDocs version of the archive, and my mild irritation at not being able to access threads 57+ without the Internet, I figured I might as well start one up from where he left off.

I'm also doing my damnedest to actually edit the thing rather than just transcribing: Cleaning up the spelling errors, altering some scene transitions that don't work outside of the 4chan format, fixing Kay's apparent crippling fear of semicolons and the like. I won't be doing anything close to a major change, though; the biggest one I'm planning is reworking the post-hiatus opening post to something that makes sense without the knowledge of the months-long break between it and the previous thread.

In any case, I have it done up to thread 61 currently. Feel free to check it out. Or call me a faggot. Or both. Whatever floats your boat.

This is- There's a lot of stuff.
Lots and lots of stuff.

You take a deep breath, and-

That didn't heklp at all.

Just, wow. There's at least eleven kinds of meat here. And the spices! And someone is frying something. Frying! The oil smells dirty but you can practically hear it crackling and popping and spitting, coating something in batter and spice and flavour-

No. No!

You're a strong spider. Indomitable will!

You wipe the liquid from your chin that is definitely sweat because it is hot and not drool at all, and march further, head tall and back straight with pride.
You're here for metals. To work your spear, to ply your trade and craft a weapon worthy of yourself. A weapon for an arachne adventurer, to fight back the monsters and protect those around her.

You exhale sharply, walking with purpose, doing your best to ignore the constant shouts of hopeful salesmen, searching between each stall, looking for someone moving ore or ingots or anything.

You skim past leathers and jewelery and exquisite dresses and-

You step back.
Elle.
That is definitely Elle's handiwork.
You can't believe- You refuse to believe anyone has that kind of dedication to the misuse of lace and, and... garters.

"Oho- You have your eye on quite the piece, miss. Straight from the forests of the north, hand sewn by a spider queen herself-"
The lady manning the stall flutters an oversized fan to conceal her face, smiling up at you as you blink all six eyes back at her.

"Oh. Hello, dear."
"Hello, yes. Sorry, I guess?"
"I don't suppose you wanted to buy it, anyway?"
"It is something my sister made, yes."

"Ah. What did you think of the pitch, then?" She says as she snaps her fan closed.
"She isn't really a queen, But I think the city believes that every spider is anyway?"
"They really do, you know. People were even blaming that earthquake the other day on a spider wearing a crown of flame. I mean, really."
"Oh. Yes. Really."
"Mhm. Well, is there anything to improve on, you think? I was lucky enough to get a piece of work, but selling it is a bit on the tough side. The price, you understand."

You tap fingers together, the click of chitin keeping time with your thoughts.

"Maybe something about how it is the first piece? Or how they have been gone so long. Or maybe use her name, yes? So people know who made it."
"Her name?"
"Elle, yes."
"That might work. It's a lovely name."

You nod.
"Mom would be happy to hear that, yes."
"I wouldn't be lucky enough to have met another arachne seamstress, would I?"
>>
>>659362
You look down to your tunic, a belt looped around your waist. You didn't particularly dress up today.
"I am afraid I prefer armour, yes. My mother, too."
"Bah, adventurers. How am I supposed to sell dresses to you?"
"It's difficult, I'm sure. Do you know where I can buy ore?"

She gestures with the fan towards the water, a quieter piece of the marketplace.

"Thank you, yes. My name is Lyra."
"Harriet, dear. Pleased to meet you."
"And me too!" You reply over your shoulder, clattering back into the stream of people circling the market.

It doesn't take long for you to reach your goal:
Shops piled high with metals, boats with shallow hulls sitting low in the water as ingots are offloaded onto waiting carts. You're pretty sure those horses are monsters. Horses don't have horns, to your knowledge.

You make your way to the first stall in line, pulling up short and catching the eye of its minder.

"Hello, yes. I need-"

"- I need red ore, please."
"Red ore?"
"The stuff- The one that is a part of the black iron alloy, yes."
"Blood steel?"

"Is that what it is actually called?"
"Yeah?"
"The heat resistant ore."
"Yup."
"Why?"

"'Cause it's red?"
"That is- Yes. Okay. Do you have any?"
"Nope."
"Can you direct me to where I might be able to buy some?"
"Try the stall in the corner. He deals in rare stuff. Mostly we sell iron by the shipload."
"Thank you. I do not need shiploads of iron yet, but I will keep you in mind, yes."

The man waves you off from his seat, having stayed planted on a stool through the entire conversation.
You make your way over to the other side to the other side of the area, homing in on the little stall in the corner, where ingots of things you don't recognize are piled- while not high, you suppose, likely to prevent the table from collapsing- in a moderate and convenient manner to showcase them.

That what's being showcased is ingots instead of manufactured goods is a bit on the odd side, but it is your first market. Maybe this is normal.

"Good day, yes."
"Good day to you too."
"I would like to buy blood steel, please. And if you know how to use it, I would like to buy that too."
"How to use it?"
"It is an alloy, yes? Or part of one? What do I need to add to it? How much? Can it be alloyed with other things?"

The man seems a bit taken aback by your questions.
"Well- What're you going to use it for?"
"A spear."
"A spearpoint?"
"No, the entire thing, yes."

"That's gonna be heavy."
"That is the plan."
He looks you up and down, considering.
"Alright."

"Alright?"
"I've got some. And I'll sell you the proper mix. What do you plan on mixing it with?"
"What can I mix it with? It is used for black iron, yes? What else?"
"You can mix it with iron. I've heard you can mix it with adamantium, but I haven't got any. And I've never seen it, besides. The mix, I mean. You can mix it with mithril, but there's no point. Just ends up with a metal that does neither thing. You can mix it with blood. That'll do all sorts of weird stuff. You can up the mix with iron and make a variation of damascus steel from it, but that takes some serious work. And a volcano, apparently. And titanium, too. For the mix."

Not too much of an issue, but morbidly curious.
>>
>>659557
>was specifically the harder steel that wasn't brittle?
That is literally a contradiction, harder metal is specifically more brittle. And damascus steel was particularly hard, and thus brittle. its sharpness was the advantage it had.
>>
>>659560
>>659571
well, we DO want a more brittle, harder weapon.

Ours keeps bending.
>>
>>659574
Bending is better than breaking honestly. We want a bit of bend so that it doesn't snap.
>>
>>659574
>well, we DO want a more brittle, harder weapon.
No, we actually don't. We want a HARDER weapon, but only to a certain degree, not the hardest we can get, which is not that useful for a spear.
>>
>>659557
>but they've admittedly lost the knowledge of making the stuff.
There were a lot of techniques for it, most of those we know of today. Compared to modern steel damascus steel was kinda meh, but its hardness was great for the time which allowed it to have a very sharp edge, thats why it was highly praised for swords. But the harder a metal, the more brittle and its carbon factor made it pretty brittle.
>>
Then again, This damascus steel has Blood Steel in it, so might not have the same problems and normal damascus
>>
>>659580
>>659582
either way, we need harder than we currently have.
Though I go for weight above hardness.
>>
>>659574
>>659582
Though, to a point, if we go for a glaive rather than a spear again, hardness would be good for the cutting edge, of course.
But that would have been better for the other one, not for the fuckhuge, heavy monster we wanted this one to be, that one does need a bit higher elasticity factor in its blade. Otherwise we risk shattering it, and fixing that in the middle of combat is awkward even for us.

>>659585
>Then again, This damascus steel has Blood Steel in it, so might not have the same problems and normal damascus
Meh, at that point it isn't the same material anymore anyhow and has no advantage over other materials.
>>
>>659588
I can agree.
It doesn't matter if it bends on impact if it's heavy enough.

"Wait- If it is called black iron, but it is an alloy of this and iron, isn't it steel?"
"The name just stuck."
"I see, yes."

"I am Lyra, by the way."
"Nick. For Nicholas, I don't steal stuff."
"Okay. What about blood?"
"Everybody's got it."

"What happens when you add it to the steel?"
"All sorts of stuff. Some people think it drinks the stuff. Black iron weapons have a sort of reputation."
"What sort?"
"That if you keep using them, they'll never dull or break, cause they feed on war."
"And do they?"

He shrugs.
"It's just what's said. But mixing in blood while forging does do something to it. If you make the black iron like that, it'll have veins of the blood steel, no matter how much you melt it down. It apparently makes it stronger. And it only works with the wielders blood. Never done it myself."

"Titanium?"
"Hard to find. Hard as can be. Hard to work with, doesn't heat properly, which is why mixing them works. Makes a weird metal. Don't know much about it."

"Okay. Damascus steel?"
"Hard as anything else, carries a wicked damn edge. Looks pretty."
"But with the blood steel?"
"Hard and pretty and red. And good with fire enchants and the like."

"What about adamantium?"
"Haven't ever seen it, but I'm told it makes a miracle metal with the strength of adamantium that can still be enchanted and all that."
"That sounds... completely false, yes."
"Yeah, I've never seen. Not saying it can't be done, but- I've been around for a while."

REQM has been subtlety hinting towards a path to becoming a tyrant for a while now, if it was just an appearance or abilities I would be fine with it but such an out of the blue personality change like this I do not like it. Lyra has never been a Tyrant as a person.

Hell he did it this thread:
"Or maybe you're making crowds. By forcing people- Frightening people to the sides as you march."

Encouraging going down this path is not what we should be doing unless we want the story to end up with a "I have to try to be a better person" theme that leaves a bitter taste in our mouths.

For clarification-
It is the standard black iron that supposedly feeds on blood.
That was why it has the Intimidating tag.

Thats a rumor anon, a superstition. And its said to do so because it feeds on blood, you know where else a weapon gets bloody a lot? Hunting.

Except we don't freak them out for laughs either, we just have to be there and they freak out.

Lyra isn't acting like a tyrant in this, she is there and people being reasonably afraid of large armed spiders got the fuck out of her way and she mentally commented

You consider it a long moment.
And then several more.

"- You said that the black iron feeds on blood, but the ones forged with blood don't? What is the difference, yes?"
"Ah. Cause they've been sated. They can only be wielded by whoever fed them, because their loyalty was won when their thirst was quenched."
"Is- is that real?"

"Miss, I sell metal."
You twirl a lock of hair around your finger, winding and unwinding.

"Please give me... Enough Iron and Blood Steel for use with my own blood. Enough for a large spear, please. And some extra blood steel."
"Right. Pile of metal, coming up."

You stand by as he weighs ingots and ore on a large scale, marking down the measurements before turning to a well worn abacus, the clatter of wooden beads sharp amidst the quiet corner of the marketplace.
There's the din of the crowd back in the mass of mixed stalls, but here near the pier there's only the creak of wagons and the occasional grunt from the workers moving too much at once. Transactions are quiet in commodities, it seems.

The final sum seems fair- And is probably a large amount of money, all told. But you're measuring it up to arachne sized dinner prices, which, to be fair, is the only real commerce you've ever engaged in.

You suppose you could compare it to the price of Elle's dress, but you certainly couldn't replicate that.

So it's with satisfaction and a slightly lighter purse that you walk away with your purchase, skittering through town to find somewhere to work.
You want that full checkmark.

>>660137
That's the point, I think. We do all this absurd stuff, but initially cutting ourselves enough to draw enough blood for this massive spear is very different.
>>
>>660120
Isn't technically anything we forge blessed, in a way? Don't think thats how it would manifest though.

>>660128
I'd be cool with a spear that carries a small storm when thrown or similar too.
>>660138
We are near entirely made of living armor, its really hard for us to cut ourselves.
Only time Lyra screams like a little girl is when Nin goes for the ears.
>>
>>660149
I.. think the blessing of the forge was described as making it easier for gods to bless items, or more willing. That is, if we impress one of them. Nothing inherent.

But that was a while ago, so not positive.
>>
We still have a few question mark lines on our sheet too.
>>
>>660159
Speaking of sheets, those character sheets still need updating.
>>
>>660159
we'll never figure them out.

>>660149
we'd have to get it from like, our upper bicep.
>>
>>660149
>We are near entirely made of living armor
Oh boy. Our arms are covered up to the elbow in armor. To bleed us enough for this we're going to have to cut ourselves on the torso; then scrape it off yourselves (vs dripping it off a thumb). Cutting on the upper arm is risky due to the veins.

>>660156
I think you're right.
>>
Guys, would it be fair to say that Lyra represents fire, Jin wind, Shezka water, Esmerelda earth, and Nin is the human connection, aka bard?

Are we actually just playing Captain Planet: Monster Girls edition?

Can we turn into Captain Planet?[\spoiler]
>>
>>660193
Jin is more fire than Air.
>>
>>660201
I think he meant it in a more symbolic sense, rather than based on actual abilities.
>>
>>660193
I'm going to vote we murder whichever of our companions gets heart if this happens.
>>
>>660180
>so how are you going to bleed on this thing
>basicly I'm gonna make the blade and stab myself with it before it cools
>>
>>660207
How about :
Jin Fire
Lyra Earth
Shezka Water
Ezzy Air (she likes flying and I still expect her to evolve wings or something.)
Nin Human
>>
>>660209
But that would be Nin
>>
>>660193
Giving esmeralda earth is kinda generous. Lyra is Fire, earth; Jin is Fire, air, Shezka is cold(water?), esmerelda is heart, and Nin is air, heart.
>>
>>660218
The last fifty chapters have convinced me that we give that little cunt too much leeway. The Queen of the Forest shit is eventually going to cause problems. Announcing your eventual plans to everyone in earshot might give people ideas.
>>
>>660242
Yeah, I was okay with bringing Nin along on this adventure on the assumption she would tone down the QUEEN shit when actually in public, by that hasn't happened at all.
>>
>>660242
no bully moth
>>
>>660252
I hope there's a vote about having a talk with her to tone that shit down.
>>
>>660242
If long she wasn't dumb with who she says it around, It wouldn't be an issue. She is though, and it has caused us issues, including a shiny new case of anxiety.

If the majority of her character interaction didn't revolve around it, I'd be happier; but we're got just slightly too many people on the spiderbus for everyone to get the screen-time they need.
>>
>>660252
Have you not read the parts from Nin's perspective?
She is only doing the QUEEN stuff in order to tease Lyra.
Nin likes the reaction Lyra makes.
>>
You sequester yourself in a corner of the guild's training grounds-
After asking Ren.

Because you don't really want to deal with Ren demanding explanations for, well, anything. You'd rather not deal with an angry Ren.

It's not hard for you to make yourself a simple smithy. More time consuming is ushering everyone back to your room, so you have a clear workspace free of flammable friends.

Jin ends up perched overhead anyway, but she's something approaching 65% fire at this point.

You put a grate over the magma anyway. Just in case.

So you settle into a mood you haven't been in in some time now- Moving through the forge mechanically, air boiling all around you as you work.
It's a good feeling.
It feels like Oakring, like the forest. A little too quiet, but you did bar the doors. The air in here could probably singe a human at this point.

You start small. It feels right. It's a new metal. You don't know it yet, and it doesn't know you. The magma is singing to you, in the odd way that the earth does, the sensation of spirit going from that far away feeling to one of closeness, the kind of excited happiness of being of use to someone. You know the feeling.

Like when you brought home food for your family, or helped someone out, no matter how small. That little piece of happiness when you know you've made a difference.

It's odd to think of rocks feeling the same way, but they do all the same.

Metals melt and twist and flatten, until you know your new steel inside out.

So you step away from the forge, to a cooler piece of your workspace, where you've left a few potions of varying types.
And you fill a bucket with blood.

Raising an arm over it, you brace your hand to the stone wall, and draw a blade across your fleshy upper arm.

The potions help.
Or rather, you probably couldn't have done it without them at all. Not all in one go. As it is, you still sit idly for a time, feeling vaguely dizzy and off.

Jin brings you food, and you pet her absentmindedly as you devour it.

And then you're back to the forge.

If your dwarven made weapon will be a thing of beauty and function- Something magical to match and rival your Mother's spear- then this one is to be something far simpler. For when dancing and parrying isn't enough. The blade is thick. Far larger that before- More resembling a greatsword's weight and width, matched with a spike.

And from that shape, you hammer out something you can be proud of.

The blade terminates into a crossguard, wide-swept spikes that you mold from the blade itself- sharper, but no less effective.

The shaft is marked with a wide grip surrounded by simple rings to stop your hands from reaching the blade itself.

And the end is tipped with a hefty counterweight, with a small spike all its own.
>>
>>660242
>>660252
I've entertained a thought on this: Lyra should just say "fuck it", and play along with her little joke. Lyra: "IF I was Queen... I would make countless tiny death arenas".

I think part of the problem is that Lyra also spreads it by constantly denying it, when people ask, not to mention asking them to "not listen to the moth".

It'd take some of the fun out of it for Nin, since she only does it to fluster Lyra, and Lyra knows it.
>>
>>660272

And then you lift your creation, and drop it wholly into a shallow basin filled with your own blood.
It hisses wildly, bubbling and boiling and steaming away- Whether it's truly some property of the metal to affect the blood, or if freeing it from your veins removes your own protection from it, the blood boils away till all that is left is a darkly stained stone basin, and a rapidly cooling spear.

You return it to the heat, then the air, tempering the metal till you are finally satisfied with the way it feels.

You raise it next you as the smithy returns to the earth, save for the perch overhead where your friend sleeps.

As the walls crumble away, your new blade catches the dawn light, the red veins crawling up the weapon glimmering deeply like precious stones in the glowing sun.

You lower the wall until you can carry your careful watcher away, one hand firmly clenching the freshly forged weapon as you stumble into bed.
>>
>>660276

Oh, definitely.

I have a feeling they met because both pairs accidentally hunted the same critter, and they decided to group up to hunt even bigger things. We're actually pretty well up there. We've hit the point where our it gets it's own name on the metaphysical level, after all. If some adventurer were to pick it up in a dungeon, the item text wouldn't read "Blood Iron Spear +3", it'd start with "The" and have its own history blurb.

Considering the next tier is "Ancient", I think all we need to do is keep using it long enough to soak it in the blood of nations and forgotten beasts of distant ages.

Then, we need to let some other people find it under contrived circumstances and use it for their own great deeds until it's not just part of our legend, but becomes a legend in its own right. I suggest leaving it buried in a skull left halfway in the lava pool of a well-known volcano.

No idea how to make the jump to the last one. Probably some kind of wizard shit.

All of the above. Sometimes gratuitious amounts of magic, or the blessings of spirits or gods, divine inspiration, twelve dwarven smiths working a forge powered by dragons breath over a volcano.

Mundane things, and easily obtainable.

Your spear is a tier over one spear of your mother's collection.
Admittedly, it's her favourite and her go to spear, but still.

About unique as well, I'd say. That is something that will grow with Lyra.

Looks like a tie.
I'll figure something out.

That'll be all the votes for the evening, but I'll check back to answer questions every once in a while.

Thanks all!

Cool, thanks for stopping by.

Though if we get to name our new spear, and it carries the thunder stone, I recommend bugzapper.

Thanks for the extra posts.
I always enjoy checking on the other guys.

see, I would think the ideal size is one that could easily rest on our head

Given our resistance to extreme heat, are we immune to hot days now?

Do we get to be chipper and happy while everyone else is melting from the 110 degree summer?

I don't know if you remember it, but in one of the last threads before your long absence, I think the departure or the thread before that, there was a long discussion on the topic of Jin and Sheszka appearing too little/being too silent that had a ton of ideas how to give them more voice and thinks to flesh them out with as characters.
Any chance any of that will find use? I'd like to do more with both of them and see them voice their thoughts, but they don't give us a lot to work with.

Say, is there a pdf or something containing all the adventures up to here? And I do not mean the whole thread, just the story posts. The archive pdf on pastebin only goes up to thread 10.
>>
>>659317

So, this got me thinking (>>658759), are there gorgons in Monster RE:? If so, how do they fit into the whole monster evolution tree? Are they a type of lamia evolution? Are they something else entirely?

Also, this quest is fuggin adorable.
>>
>>665522
doesn't sound like it since the main character doesn't seem to be a reincarnated human.
>>
>>665522
There are indeed Gorgans; Lann ran right into a wall the first time she saw one (they're not actually hostile).
>>
>>666380

The core narrative of the RE: universe involves people being re-incarnated from other worlds into monster bodies, but the world revolves around monsters evolving in crazy and spectacular ways over the course of their lives.

Also, you don't need to be reincarnated to be cute. See: Sheszka, Jin, Nin, etc.

I do wonder what sort of people Elle would attract.
Possibly cross dressers?
Would it only be people from the village and caravans? Or have other spiders in the forest started to hear about her?

Men would do well to introduce the concept of kilts.

Noblemen who are after GREAT WEALTH.

Second and third sons who need to marry into money, basically.

I forgot it was called that. Also it looks like it's gotten a bit more complicated since the last time I read up on it.

>>687902
And how many of them will turn out to be terrified by giant spider?
"Now put out your arms. Please stop screaming yes."

Though I find the image of various young nobles trying ineffectively to woo her to be equally hilarious.
