“What did we learn?” you ask.

The Gunners Committee all huddle around in blankets, shivering and with high fevers as a called-in Naval Studies Medical student takes their temperature one by one. “Don’t fight nature,” they all groan.

“Exactly.” As fun as Winona makes life, you have to wonder if she ever realizes that life isn’t the kind of guy that gives you things. It’ll kill you just because. Still, five minutes of being Winona would be nice. You fold your arms, giving everyone a stern look. “Think you’ll all be better by practice today?”

“I guess,” says Winona. “Are you gonna stay home today?”

“I’d rather not,” you say. “I still got work to do.”

“M’kay…”

Griselda walks on over, rubbing her head, looking as if she hasn’t gotten a good night’s sleep last night it seems. “Ellie. Can I ask you a favor?” You nod. Anything for Griselda. “I know you gotta do your practice thing for the duel with Stack’s sisters and all. But could you try and like uh…” Griselda sighs, rubbing her eyes. “Keep focused on practice today? I think gunnery practice is gonna be real important for the Hugo Gernsback match.”

“I will, Griselda.” You nudge your head over to the Gunners. Griselda looks over at them, then sighs deeply in frustration. “Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll be fine by later today.”

“Right, right.” Griselda scratches at her messy hair. “Just saying. By the way, ZES sent some more scouts our way too, try not to give them too much, okay?” You give a thumbs up and a zip of the mouth. “That’s my girl.” She pats your back.

And with that you…

“Good morning, Commander.” Tessa hands you a set of reports as you walk in. The rain was still getting to everyone it seems, with Athena laying back and falling asleep while soaked. You decide to give her desk a tap as you walk by, making her flinch and wake up. “Here are the logistics reports for today. The Captain also wants you to sign off on the accounting database for the luxury imports and make sure there are no irregularities.”

“Fine.” You shuffle through the reports, it’ll be a few hundred documents to sort through and look at, nothing too hard. You walk on over to your desk and- “AGH!” you yell, looking to see a dead rat in your chair. “ADMIRAL NIMITZ!” you yell. “Eugh!” You take it by the tail, and hurry to the garbage. You find Admiral Nimitz prowling around the desks, hunting instinct on full. “Goddamn!”

“Oh, don’t be so hard on the cat,” says Tessa. “He just wants your approval.”

“He doesn’t need to leave dead rats on my chair!” You grab a rag from the desk and quickly clean up the area it laid in. Ugh, it could have like hepatitis or plague or something!

“At least he’s killing rats,” says Athena. “Unlike General Fredendall down in Engineering. We spoiled him so much he barely leaves the litter box.” You roll your eyes.

You pick up Nimitz by his belly, groaning in frustration as he meows. “You naughty boy.” You sit down, then place him down in your lap. He immediately purrs, settling down and resting himself. “So, Tessa, Athena, Hilda.” Hilda looks up from her finance work, quirking her brow. “How are you all doing?”

“Doing well,” says Tessa. “You?”

“Fine, I suppose.” You lean back, looking at Tessa. “I really just want to get to work but…” You poke Nimitz on the neck, and he hisses a bit at being disturbed. “This little guy.”

Tessa giggles a little, petting Nimitz gently on his head. Nimitz is much more receptive to that touch, his ears twitching in response. “He just thinks we’re weak hunters as all. He doesn’t mean anything.” Oh yeah, that’s what cats do. They leave their prey out for you because they think you can’t forage for yourself. “He still loves us.”

“Right.” You lean back, groaning.

“So how’s Griselda doing?” Huh? Tessa looks to you, a bit concerned. “Er, me and Athena have been catching up on her Tankery experiences this year. I hear the team is in the NATO wild card running.” You nod at that, just knocked out Sherbrooke a while ago in fact. “But uh… Griselda doesn’t seem to have changed a bit.”

“She’s stubborn, but she’s still got a lot on her mind. I do worry about her sometimes I suppose.” You lean back, shrugging. “She’s doing so much and she’s really putting the team on her shoulders.”

Tessa nods. “I see. No pun intended.” She points to her blind eyes, chuckling at her own joke a bit. “Well, she was always so concerned with winning last year. But last year was different, last year she had a lot riding on her. Some of the new members of the ITL team really gave Griselda a hard time for being an Officer right off the bat while the others had to work for it.” Oh. Griselda never mentioned that. Oh jeez. “Not to mention all that talk of wanting to make Gertrude proud.”

“Yeah. She told me all about that,” you say.

“Mhm.” Tessa places her hands in front of her chest. “I should probably let you get to work, Commander.” You look over to Athena, who looks back at you with a skeptical expression. She shrugs once she sees you looking at her, while Tessa walks back to her desk to work.

Caldwell looks up from her computer. “Less tanks, more work you guys.” You shuffle through your reports, then move to the database on your computer.

Suddenly, your phone rings. You pick it up. “Lieutenant Commander Zumwalt.”

“Commander, it’s Captain Spruance.” Oh! You stiffen up a bit. “How are things in the database?” You check through them as you talk to her. “Nothing out of the ordinary?”

“None so far,” you explain. “I had to talk with one of the accountants last night but it was nothing too big. I actually heard we were coming out on surplus with food supplies?”

“Oh, yeah! We actually do have sizable surplus. However, that’s not why I called you.” Oh? “Listen, next week we’re going to be doing major renovation to the lower levels in anticipation for an enrollment spike in Naval Studies. New dorms, new living facilities, all that jazz. I was hoping you would be able to personally oversee it next week.” Well…

You remember Winona’s request to spend a day with you next week perhaps. But for now, it’s your job first, then friends. “Um, sure, sure. I can do it.” The Captain especially wouldn’t ask you if she knew you couldn’t do it. And boy, you can do it. “So, next week?”

“Yeah. We’re drafting up a lot of people from Engineering to get in on this. It’ll be at least 5 or 600 engineers, not including support personnel, working on this.” Oh, that’s huge. “So, Monday, report in to work with a hard hat and a high vis, alright? Be prepared to work overtime if need be.”

“Okay, Captain.”

“Alrighty! By the way, good luck in the Hugo Gernsback match, looking forward to it!” You smile a little. “Welp, gotta go. Later!” And with that, she hangs up. Caldwell looks over at you, giving you a sharp glare.

“Hmph. How come the Captain trusts you with that job?” she asks.

You shrug. “Maybe because I’m actually responsible?”

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever.” She goes back to working. “Just don’t burn yourself out, I’ll be right behind you for that job.” Oh, of course not, wouldn’t dream of it.

You look out the window again to see the rain absolutely pouring down, as if someone were pouring a planet-sized bucket of water down on LGA itself. It wasn’t rain drops, it was rain streams. You, Athena, Hilda, Tessa, and Caldwell stare out of it. “Hmph.” Caldwell pulls up her umbrella. “Well, I’m going home!”

“That umbrella’s not going to save you,” says Athena. “It’s gonna suck out there.”

“Please, it’s just rain. It never killed anybody!” Caldwell holds up her umbrella. “Later!”

> Wait for a ride to the hangar.

Instead of going out and risking it, you decide to simply call up a taxi and wait for it to come by and retrieve. Hilda leans back in her seat, sighing deeply as she reads a book. “Don't you normally have a ride?” asks Athena.

“I would,” you say. “But Denise is busy being an undercover cop.” Tessa and Athena look at you with confused expressions. “Look, I can explain it all another time, but she's just doing that for me. I do kind of worry for her though.”

“She's probably alright,” says Athena. “You drive that Cromwell though, right?” You nod. Athena says to you, “Cromwell's a nice tank I suppose. I prefer the Sherman myself though. A bit more easy to use you know?” Yeah, that's fair. Though, the Sherman never really become one of your top tanks even though it's been one of the big centerpieces of a lot of plays these past few years. “So, Griselda's doing fine then?”

“Yeah. Are you two worried about her?” you ask.

Tessa and Athena glance at each other, then nod slowly. “We think that Griselda might be running herself into the ground. I mean, I know this is Tankery, we have fans and money and academics on the line, but I wish she'd take it slow and calm down a little. She never had time to relax last year you know?” Tessa sighs deeply, shutting her eyes as she thinks back on it. “The poor girl desperately needs a boyfriend.” Oh, as if. You roll your eyes. “Or a girlfriend. Honestly, Griselda strikes me as the type to experiment.”

Athena says, “Plus, isn't her sister gay or something?”

“Well, that's-” Tessa stops herself. “That's- you don't become gay just because your family is.” Athena shrugs at that, leaning back a bit in her seat and kicking her legs up onto the desk. “Let's scrap that topic, she's okay though, right?”

“As okay as she can be,” you say. “You know, do you two ever consider rejoining her crew?” The two are silent on that topic. “If it's a sensitive topic, I don't-”

“No, no.” Tessa sits down on your desk. “We left the team because... well, we left because it wasn't fun anymore. That's what Tankery should be. It should be about fun. But, Griselda didn't make it that way. Every battle we went into with Griselda felt like a slog, like an endless struggle.”

Athena grunts. “She wasn't the best Officer starting out which didn't help.”

“Don't be rude, Athena.” Athena rolls her eyes. Tessa says, “We would like to see her succeed this year, but, I don't think we're interested in doing Tankery again.”

I think they both could at least spend some time together. Griselda blames herself for their leaving too.

I think the point is friends, plural. Griselda is on a self made island and she only lets us in sparingly. She needs more than just ourselves and sometimes Iris.

Of course, its also still on her to allow people in.
>>
>>682479
Yeah, she has us and her incredibly quiet and shy crewmates. Which means basically us. Considering the amount of pressure she puts herself under and how busy we are, that's not really going to cut it.
>>

“I respect that, I guess.” You fold your arms, then look down at Admiral Nimitz as he coils himself into a ball in your lap. “Still, Griselda doesn't really let people in so to speak on how she's doing.”

“I figured,” says Tessa. “Are Yuno and Luisa at least doing well?”

“Yeah. They don't talk much and I haven't talked with them much either but they seem to tolerate Griselda pretty well at least.” Tessa nods at that, putting her hand on her chest. “You know, it'd be great if you two were to visit. Maybe Griselda'd like to talk to the two of you. Mend things over.”

Athena leans over. “I think it's way too late for tat. The way we left, after the semi-finals... I think Griselda really took that personally. We haven't talked about anything in so long.” Oh. That's... something you guess. “Even if we wanted to apologize, there's no guarantee she'd accept it.”

“Yeah,” says Tessa. “I think the semi-finals were our last rodeo with her.”

You receive a text on your phone. Your taxi is here. “Well, my taxi is here. Did you guys want to come with me to practice? Maybe watch us?” They both shake their heads, resigned. “Are you sure? It'd be really-”

“Like I said,” says Athena. “I think we're the last people Griselda wants to see at this point. Besides her sister perhaps.” You're stunned for a few seconds, but you decide to leave it at that for now. With that, you take your coat and put your hat on, then leave the Office.

-

-

You find the crews in the weight room, everyone having changed into PT gear. It seems Griselda doesn't want to risk the rain today or take a chance on gunnery practice with no visibility. However, you look around, and no Griselda anywhere. “Hey, Iris.” Iris is busy on the ground, doing yoga. “Have you seen Griselda?”

“She left us in the care of Miss McPherson,” says Iris. “Said she had work to do in the Office.” Oh.

“-yes, I know. I know.” Griselda is pacing around the office on her cell phone. “Yeah, it does look bad that NATO lost to the ITL. But NATO is still a new system. We're learning things. And- you gotta give us a chance. If we had a bit more money, we could do a whole lot more! Just... Uh huh?” Griselda's face of worry slowly turns into one of defeat. “Yeah. Okay. Okay, I understand.” She looks over at you, holding up a finger to signal for a minute. “Okay, thank you, Mister Lerner.” She hangs up, sighing deeply. She looks ready to throw the phone through the window, but since you're here, she just shoves it angrily back into her skirt pocket. “What do you want, Ellie?”

“Um.” You tilt your head. “Is this a bad time?”

“I just got off the phone with the Lerners, who sponsor my sister, but won't sponsor me because of what happened during our exhibition match,” she says. “You know, the Lerners, own the Washington Nationals, real estate moguls, those guys? Lotta money.” Griselda shoves herself into her chair, groaning in defeat as she rubs her forehead. “I have got the hugest fucking headache right now.”

“Oh. So bad time then?” you ask.

“No, no. It's alright,” she says. “What do you want, Ellie?”

“Um. I was just checking in on you,” you say. “You aren't here for strength training?”

“I gotta talk with other sponsors,” she says. “There just isn't enough time in the world. Unfortunately, I am not the charismatic Lothario that my sister is. Which means it's just a nightmare trying to convince anyone to take a chance on this team. Some people even think Gertrude is funding me which tells them they don't need to fund me, you know?” You shrug at that. “Whatever. I shouldn't dump my problems on you.”

“Come train with us.” Griselda quirks her brow. “Look, stress relief, okay? It'll be good for you. It'll be good for the team if we know you're with us. Okay?”

Griselda takes a minute to think. “Alright.” She nods. “Fine.” You smile at her. “Let's go.”

-

-

Griselda has joined the crew wearing her PT gear, with the shirt tied up at the side to expose a bit of her midriff for ventilation you guess. It does catch the eye of the Poles, who stare at her with admiration in their eyes as she works on doing pull ups. Her twentieth so far in fact.

Meanwhile, you and your crew are busy with stretching exercises on the mat. Winona in particular is helping you reach your toes as you sit down and stretch your arms to touch them. “Come on, there you go.” You feel your muscles and tendons flex with each millimeter. Gotta get loose, gotta get strong. One part of doing Tankery you suppose.

Stack meanwhile is at the loading racks with the other loaders, doing simulated loading with 75mm shells. Miss McPherson times and scores them all.

Ingrid however...

Ingrid is barely able to do one push up. One real push up. “Come on, Ingrid! Use your arms, not your knees!” yells Stack from the loading rack. Ingrid struggles, sweat pouring down her face as she struggles to do her push ups.

She flops down on the mat. “... I'm terrible at this,” says Ingrid.

“Cheer up, Ingrid.” Ingrid looks over, adjusting her glasses. “Maybe you should start a little smaller than push ups. Or just do a light jog?”

Ingrid sighs, turning over, then sitting up and standing up. “Yeah, I guess I can do a jog.”

“That's the spirit!” says Winona. “Go on, Ingrid!” Winona stands up, pumping her fist. “Take a lap!”

Ingrid glares at Winona. “I'm not a child, Winwin.” Ingrid mutters to herself, tugging on her shirt a bit before taking a steady jog around the weight room. Winona pouts a bit, obviously a bit frustrated at having her cheers be rejected.

“She's got a point,” you say.

“Hmph!” Winona turns her nose up. “I was just trying to cheer her up as all!” Suddenly, you hear a loud slamming noise near you. You all look to see Josephina dropping the deadlifting weights after having squatted and lifted them up. Jeez, Josephina. She high-fives Regina Taney of Naval Studies Rescue, then walks over. “Josephina, you're strong!”

“Merci beaucoup,” says Josephina. “My papa taught me to keep myself in shape.” For a huge girl, she is pretty much in shape. Can't help but admire that.

Stack says, “Your Dad's a helicopter pilot right?” Josephina nods. “He ever let you fly in one of his helicopters.”

Josephina gasps, nodding very sweetly. “Oh, oui, oui! You know, my papa says that if I graduate, he will enroll me into a flight school so I can get my helicopter license! He keeps a Bell 205 Helicopter at home, he says that if I do good in school, he'll even let me have it!” Josephina gets giddy at the prospect. “Oooooh! Sacre dieu! I cannot wait for it!” All of you look at each other weirdly.

Winona lies back as you pull her legs up and scrunch them back towards her. “How's this?” you say.

“Little harder,” she says. You nod, pressing against her feet harder. “Ooooh, unf! That's better! That's pretty tight!” Okay, this is getting weird. She hisses in exertion as she arches her back a bit and allows her legs to be flexed.

“So, Winona,” you say. “I gotta tell you something.”

“Oh?” She smiles at you. “What is it?”

“So, next week, I'm taking a job to oversee the construction of some new areas in the lower levels for new students coming in,” you say.

“Oh, the expansion projects?” You nod as you allow Winona's leg to uncurl and straighten out. You pull her left leg up, then slowly angle it back straight towards her. “Yeah, yeah. I actually got the memo about that, I'm actually gonna be part of that too.”

“Oh great, great!” you say. “Because well, I'm probably gonna be focusing entirely on that next week?” Winona looks at you, blinking. “Which may mean, I might not get a chance to spend some time with you.”

Winona blinks. “Oh. Oh...” Winona frowns a little.

“We'll see,” you say. Winona nods, accepting that answer for now it seems. You sigh, you feel really bad to try and run around on Winona right now. Especially after you said you'd try and spend more time with her. But you suppose that work must come before friends. “Hey, maybe we'll see each other during work!”

“Meh. It's not the same, you're supposed to work at work,” says Winona. “You know?”

“I guess. But, if we see each other at work, we can at least talk about stuff,” you say. “Like uh... Unlimited Tankery or- or model tanks, or even Cuddles! How's Cuddles doing?”

Winona perks up a little. “Oh, Cuddles is doing great. I've been leaving him with Abby on and off lately. I really wish you'd let me take him with us on our tankery matches.”

“He might get crushed or something,” you explain. “A battlefield is no place for a pet snake.”

“Yeah, but... he could be really lucky!” says Winona. You roll your eyes. Winona pouts intensely at you. “Come on!”

“No,” you say. She huffs.

With that, strength training starts to come to a close. Everyone starts to head to the showers.

You've got some sweat built up, but honestly you can skip the shower for now and do it later. It would be nice to have some peace and quiet in the showers for once. So you decide to get a nice broth going with Giap, who ahead of time has prepared a helping of pho for everyone. You and her then dice up some meatballs, some brisket, and some leafy greens to add in, and boom. Dinner is served. “Say, Giap. I meant to ask you.” Giap looks at you as the two of you serve the bowls of pho to the crews, with two lines by a table. “How did you get into the Junior Historians?”

Giap shrugs. “To be frank, I don't know. The three of them just plucked me off the sidewalk and asked me if I wanted to join. It seemed like fun at the start but they're a bunch of crazies!” Giap smiles. “I like them. Also, they really like my pho. It takes forever to prepare, but it's not every day someone praises your cooking.”

“I can relate,” you say. Giap nods at that.

Winona walks up, holding up an empty bowls. “Seconds, please!” You roll your eyes, then pour Winona some more noodles and broth. “Yes!”

“That's your second helping, Winona,” says Giap. “Pho's really filling, you sure can handle that!”

“I've handled much more filling than this!” says Winona as she walks off.

After you serve everyone (even Griselda came to get a bowl before retreating into her office.) You grab a bowl for yourself and sit around with your crew. Ingrid listens to the game on her phone, sitting on the turret. Stack and Josephina meanwhile laze around on the engine block on their phones as well. Winona meanwhile continues slurping noodles loudly and proudly. “For goodness sake, Winona, bite the noodles.”

She slurps up one last flailing noodle. “Nope!” She bites her teeth at you, grinning as she continues to eat. You roll your eyes for what seems like the fifth time today.

You sit down with the Automotive Club, specifically with Ariel Chapman as they paint up the Panzer IV with the LGA emblem, something that Griselda allowed them to do on their spare time. “How are you guys taking to the Panzer IV?” you ask.

Ariel says, “It's great! Very gentle on us. Cookie has been learning to drive it little by little. We even take it out on trips to the store! And, we're the envy of all of our Cuban relatives over at the car meets now that we have our own tank!” She places her hand on her chest, grinning proudly. “I do believe us to be ready for the match with Hugo Gernsback.”

“Right, right. Uh...” You point your thumb to the Hellcat next to the tank, where the Automotive Fan Club all glare intensely at the Automotive Club (that's gonna get confusing) from the inside. “Is there gonna be a problem with that on the field.”

Benny pokes her head out of the commander's hatch. “Hopefully there will not be. The little putas wouldn't dare cross us.”

“Hey, screw you!” says Dalia. “Come match time, you'll be begging for our help! And when you do, we're not going to help you!”

“Now girls,” you say. “This is supposed to be a team we're building. I know you two have your... very odd and weird differences regarding cars. But we're on a tank team. None of that matters now.”

The Automotive Fan Club turns their back on the Automotive Club, and the Automotive Club does the same.

Ugh.

After everyone has discarded their bowls to be cleaned by the Junior Historians, as they graciously volunteered to do, you decide to spend some of the night with your crew. “So, girls.” They all sit around and lie back on the turret, lazing about. “Everyone have a good day at least?”

“Yep,” says Stack. “I think we should be ready to take on my sisters whenever you feel ready, Ellie.”

“Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, we'll see, Stack.” Stack nods. “Do you know what tanks we're going to be using?”

“Not yet.” Stack rubs her chin a little. “But we'll see soon enough.”

Josephina raises her hand. “Elodie, can I tell you an idea that I had?” You nod. “Well, perhaps we could start upgrading Oliver into a much tougher Cromwell. Improve his engine, and uparmor him. I hear there may even be some good variants we can build the chassis off of.”

“I'm not sure a Challenger or a Comet are in our budget though,” says Ingrid. Josephina nods at that.

Winona raises her hands. “Much as I like to talk about tanks, can we just point out that Ellie finally has free time to spend with us and we're squandering it by just goofing around about tanks!?” They all stare at Winona. “Come on! We should take advantage of this! We should watch a movie, or- or- we could break out a video game or two! Or maybe we could...” She holds up an empty bottle. “Spin the bottle!”

“Isn't spin the bottle a little too lewd for Ellie?” asks Stack. Winona grins even more widely. “Yeah, let's not.” Winona frowns.

You and the crew wheeled in a TV to play on the fanciest console you've ever seen, an Xbox 360. “What do the Junior Historians have to play?” asks Ingrid.

“They have the Modern Warfare series, they've got all the Halos,” says Stack. “They've got FIFA, they've got Mass Effect 3, they got FORZA...” Stack pours all the games out of the dufflebag, making you all gasp at the sheer immensity of their video gaming library. So this is what they do when they're not being historians. “Yeah, there's a lot to choose from.”

“Let's just do something simple,” says Winona. “Oooooh! Let's do Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops! I liked to play that back home! You wanna do it, Ellie?”

“Um, I never played on a console like this.” You marvel at the 360. It's so sleek!

“Oh, you have to play then!” She hands you a controller and wow. You marvel at it in your hands as well. Good god, this is thing is so ergonomic. And the analog sticks as well. And the buttons! Wow! This thing must have cost thousands of dollars! Who can afford a console like this!? The game starts up on the TV as Ingrid, Josephina, and Stack gather around you and Winona. “Okay, so we'll do something pretty simple...” She shuffles through all the Spec Ops missions. It appears the Junior Historians have 100 percented everything, allowing you a wide variety of missions. “Let's do this one, it's a simple hold-the-line kind of deal with the Predator missiles.”

“Alright,” you say.

The two of you load up into the game and HOLY SHIT. These graphics are amazing! You've seen lots of gaming stuff in magazines, but seeing it all in motion. You twirl the sticks around, moving and weaving about. “Whoa,” you say.

“Okay, so right trigger fires, left aims, push in on the left stick to crouch, right stick is melee, left and right bumpers are your grenades, B is reload, Y is switching weapons, X to use stuff, and A to jump.” Okay, okay. You got this.

The two of you are on top of a building in a snowy little industrial area. “Okay, we got enemies incoming.” Shit. “Ellie, pick up that laptop, that controls the Predator missiles.” Oooooh. You pick it up, and immediately open the laptop. “Okay, Ellie! I'm leaving the Predator missiles to you, aim for the groups.”

Okay, okay, okay, you got this. You squint. It's... actually a little hard to see anything. White on grey screen. Damn it. Uh...

“I'm launching a Predator Missile now!” You fire a Predator Missile at the building with the two snipers on it. The camera starts to zoom in on them, rocket fury closing in on two enemies who'd dare to attack from such distance! Ha ha!

“Wait, what's that noise?” asks Winona.

The two of you are immediately pasted by a rocket from nowhere. MISSION FAILED.

Winona looks at you. “Did you just fire a Predator Missile at us?”

“Uh.” You blink. Wait. Wait, that's not fair. There were two snipers but- were-... oh. Wait. Um. You cough a bit. “Y-... I think I did.” Stack hugs you from behind, burying her face in your back as she struggles not to burst out laughing. Josephina as well buries her face in her hands, trying desperately not to laugh as well.

Winona and Ingrid meanwhile burst out at the seams. “AHAHAHA! YOU IDIOT!” yells Ingrid. “You just blasted yourselves! Before you even saw anybody!” Ingrid hugs a flailing Winona as you sit there, blushing deeply.

“Ah- ah... shut up!” you yell. “It was a simple mistake.”

“E-... enemies are marked by a red square!” Winona cries through tears and laughter.

Winona laughs madly, nodding, her face still in your shoulder. “Okay! Okay! We can do that!” She picks up her controller. “Oh God! I'm gonna die, wow!” She waves her hand in front of her face, fanning herself as the rest of the crew dies around you. “Jesus Christ, Ellie, where the hell did that come from!?”

“Look, I'm not used to these kinds of games, okay!?” you explain. “Everything's so 3D!”

Winona waves it off. “Okay, okay! Let's do another round! Ahahaha!” She wipes some tears from her eyes. “Let's do another round!”

There was still more reason to laugh at you it seems. Even though you managed to figure out how to aim and how to shoot, you still couldn't for the life of you adjust to having to use the analog sticks to look and move at the same time. What really got Stack going was that you'd move but not look anywhere, then stop, look to where you wanted to go, then went without looking around even if people were shooting you. “Ellie, why are you so bad at video games!?”

In the end, you didn't kill a single person and Winona had to basically kill everyone on your behalf.

You sigh. “Well, I have better things to do than play video games you know. Just-” Ugh! Why is this so frustrating and yet so fun! If you had time, you'd try to practice this! “Whatever.”

Winona leans over, resting on her side. “I can't do this anymore! It's too funny! I can't, I can't, Ellie, you're going to kill me!” You take your pillow and slap it over Winona's face. “Ow, ahaha! Agh! Why!? Aaaahhh!”

-

-

After several more rounds where you finally managed to kill a few people, the night started to dawn. “We'll be taking this back!” says Patton. “And you better not have messed with any of our rankings!” They wheel the TV, Xbox 360, and massive pile of games away from your tank.

Winona hugs you however as you lay your sleeping bag out on the floor. She continues laughing outrageously. “Why are you so terrible at video games but so good at everything else!?”

“Look. I've only ever played on my one console,” you say. “Okay!?”

“I can't take it, you're so cute, Ellie! You're like a monkey trying to figure things out!” she says between gasps, hiccups, and laughter. Even the other crewmembers bury their faces into their pillows, trying desperately not to laugh at you. “Oh God, you're gonna keep me up all night! And not in the way I was expecting!”

You roll your eyes. “Are you done humiliating me?”

“Yes, yes...” She lets go of you. “Good night, Ellie!” She pats your head, then crawls on over to her sleeping bag. Ugh, so embarrassing!

You need to make time to get good at video games.
