You are Sierra Beckhoff, and your Alcatraz duel with Anatu-allatu for control of San Francisco is off to a rough start.

---

Having a gun pointed in your direction jogs your brain back into action. You’re not going to be executed by some nameless footman. Cradling your Izhowak spine in your yet-tingling arm, you use it prop yourself up and scowl at him. You point your other hand at his weapon, and clench a fist.

Dark, crackling power hisses from the flintlock before he can pull off the shot. (-2 PP 45/47) The wood of the handle sears the flesh of the demon’s hand. He hisses in dismay and tosses the weapon away from him.

The sound attracts the attention of more soldiers – caught in the confusion of contradictory orders, too many eyes are falling on you. Another rifle goes off, but not before the shooter gets counter sniped by your comrades. The shot whooshes uncomfortably near overhead, zipping past to tag another Stygian in the leg. The demon howls and keels over.

You’re exposed and surrounded. You need cover before some conscript gets lucky and puts you down.

The shadows can’t help you here under the diffused sunlight through the clouds, but the wind and storm can. You bow your head and tighten your window of concentration onto the glimpse of power the Great Lynx gifted you.

You beckon to the sea, broadcasting your command to the nameless waters. (-1 LW 13/15)

The next set of crashing waves send up an incredible spray of white. All around you and the scurrying Stygians, a wall of mist surges upward. Then, without warning, it collapses and surges inland like an avalanche.
>>
>>68958

Panicking soldiers are engulfed by the rapid inflow of fog, vanishing into the cloud. The forces around you turn outward, fearful of the encroaching white. “Queen’s horns, she’s cursed us all,” one soldier cries aloud Heltic.

You maintain concentration on drawing in the protective mist, eyes narrowed as you will it to draw in faster. You’re so focused, in fact, that you don’t sense the Stygian at your back. Your first hint of his presence comes when the point of his bayonet snags in your chainmail right at the shoulder, pushing you flat into the ground. The point slides up off from your armor, skipping up over the edge and cutting along the side of your neck.

White hot pain slices through your awareness. Instinctively, you roll away from the bayonet onto your back. Above you stands a grotesque Stygian soldier, his body and flesh a tumorous mass stuffed into an ill-fitting buckled uniform. He draws back with his flintlock and goes in for another frantic stab at your throat.
You grab your spear with your operable hand, swinging it up to point at a deadly angle. The Stygian’s own momentum puts the tip of your spear through his sternum. (Stygian: 15/22 HP; +3 Fury: 35) His bayonet you easily kick aside with your clawed feet.

Gasping, the Stygian pulls off of the spear and stumbles backward, dragging his rifle with him. Not dead, not yet.

The mists close in with finality, the closeness of the white fog muting the chaos and shouts around you.

Blood, the varied and bitter flavors of Stygians and the strict coppery taste of your own, fill your senses. It glistens from your steel spear, drips from the fingers of your left hand, wets the side of your jaw.
>>
>>68963

Unsteady fire burns your heart with its ever convulsion, the smell of gunpowder galvanizing you. In the body of the mists, figures scurry and shout in words you don’t recognize, confusion and fear driving them. They’re nothing more than prey to hunt down, pigs who need the flesh scorched from their bones and the life drained from their veins. (+5 Fury: 40) (+1 HP: 24/35)

HP: 24/35 (Left arm nonresponsive)
Stress: 51/103
Fury: 38

LW: 14/15
PP: 45/47

The injured Stygian stumbles away in retreat, trying to catch the attention of his fellows as he clutches the wound in his chest. “The tyrant stands here!” he snarls. “Finish it off! Brothers!”

He is weak, but his blood is strong. You feel the urge to make his strength yours.

>Break contact and get out of this madness. Here’s not the place to stand around.
>Tear into Stygian troopers. If you can break their will to fight, you won’t need to contend with them afterward.
>Finish off injured Stygian, recuperate on his blood.
>You can’t hang around sucking down this guy’s blood, he’s making himself a target. Go find a corpse instead.
>Avoid fighting other Stygians if possible, your fight’s not with them, it’s with their princess.
>Seek out Anatu. This duel is still happening, whatever her posse says or does.
>Crowther comes first. You should be able to locate him, Waldric gave you his blood phial. Draw out the circle.

Gripping your spear, you push yourself up and touch your fingers to your neck. They come away bright red.

“She’s right here!” shouts the Stygian, pointing back at you.

“Thousand hells I am,” you growl, hefting the spine up in your right hand and chucking it at the demon. It plants solidly into his back, and he lets out a rattling groan, spasming back in an attempt to reach the spine.

You charge forward and spring onto him before he’s got a chance. You tackle him to the ground, raking your sizzling claws over him as he struggles to fight back. Flesh cracks and burns at your touch in a flurry of pure wrath. Resistance to your attacks fades and ceases.

When you get a hold of yourself, you find yourself poised over a thrashed corpse, freshly killed. You go to town and revel in his blood, slaking your thirst on the would-be assassin. (-4 Stress: 47) (+5 HP: 29/35) (+5 Fury: 45) (+2 PP: 47/47)

The taste and texture of life shoots through, surging energy and clarity into your senses and limbs. Feeling returns to your left arm where you were shot. The wound on your bicep is still a ragged mess, and a scattered pain grips you whenever you dare to move it, but it’ll hold out for now.

You feel another foreign presence through the mist, and take off before you’re spotted again, your spear low at your side.

The mists guard you against knowing eyes. Orienting yourself using the positions of your wells as points of triangulation, you barely pause to touch the ground as you fly toward where Anatu was last. You skirt around groups of Stygian footmen and dodge the peripheral vision of solitary stragglers without them ever realizing you were there.
>>
>>69462

And then you sense Anatu’s presence ahead of you, a greatness exceeding that of the lackeys surrounding her. They move inland at speed, retreating back the way they came.

The mists coupled with your thultal ninja predator skills have afforded you the element of surprise.

>Send in your summons to scatter Anatu’s escort.
>Leaving already? This mean I win the duel?
>I came here for a fight. I fucking better get one.

You toss away your spear and unsling your rifle. You bring it up to your shoulder and peer through the scope at the forms of your quarry.

The scope renders the world in unearthly violet hues. It cuts through some of the eerie thickness of the fog, allowing you to see much further than without it. Through its view, you make out Anatu and her escort. There’s a dozen soldiers with her, Stygians of all characters, along with the several-mouthed captain.

In their midst moves Anatu. She is not a flawless woman with a glimmering smile. The Stygian heiress is huge, maybe a foot taller than Ranthix even. Her head is chiefly a set of angular jaws, lined along the side with a scattering of multi-faceted eyes. While her torso and main set of arms follow the basic plot of humanoid design, her exoskeletal body has more in common with a lobster or a bumble bee than anything else. Too thin in places, strangely furred in others. She walks on six crab-like legs, similar to Ulam’uberatu, but more insectoid in nature.

Beside her, the Stygian soldiers look more like small children than trained warriors.

Anatu’s personage shimmers with almost imperceptible energy, barely constrained. Seeing it without the glamors, you can sense its effects in the air. She’s got power enough to challenge yours. (Anatu-allatu: 90 HP, 56 PP)

Her considerable person is bound tightly in regal gold and blue fabric, cut away in places to draw particular attention to the joints of her carapace and the bulbous horns hooking upward from the back of her head.

Nabuth is not with her party, and neither is Crowther. You wonder if they were ever with her to begin with. You’ll find out after you beat her within an inch of life, or further, if that’s what it takes.

You lower your rifle again. Anatu is a formidable opponent, but so are you. You just need to make sure nobody’s shooting you in the back while you’re getting your job done.
>>
>>70341

The guards around Anatu might shoot first before you can get this thing back on track. They need something else to deal with.

Reaching within your vault of strength, you tug on the strings to your lakeside well, summoning up shades of Lake Superior.

Thee hissing serpents of boiling air writhe out of the mists. They idle just long enough for you to lend them direction, then they steam out with furious intent toward Anatu’s guards.

The malicious creatures snake amongst the Stygians, sliding over limbs and ghosting through flesh and blood. The soldiers yell and lash out to protect themselves from their ethereal attackers, but not before they’ve all received scalding burns.

With the extra dimness afforded by the mists, you find it dark enough to start tugging at ambient shadows. You nudge them just a bit as you walk alongside Anatu and her faltering squadron of soldiers, letting them play tricks of the light resembling motion, just out of the definite range of sight. (-3 PP: 44/47)

Beleaguered by serpents, the soldiers try in vain to locate you. In a panic, one raises his rifle, aims, and fires into empty air far from you.

“Hold the guns or I’ll have you gutted!” bellows the captain.

“Thought you’d have better control over your people, Anatu,” you say, announcing your presence to the Stygian heiress.

In reply, Anatu lashes out with a hand and snatches one of the serpents from its flight beside her. The ghostly serpent writhes in futile attempt to escape as she squeezes its neck tighter and tighter.

The remaining spirit snakes flee, allowing the burned Stygians a reprise.

“Nabuth underestimated your constitution,” says Anatu with a pretty smile, regarding the serpent in her grip as its struggles grow in intensity. “A lesser being would have died.” Her tightening grip causes the snake to explode in a puff of vapor. She flexes her hand and examines it.
>>
>>70348

She looks upward then, attempting to make you out form the ambient fog. “The one who fired upon you, he died defending my honor,” she explains, her voice tight. “Our men are not accustomed to the slander of their queens and mothers.”

“Or maybe you had to get the first shot in,” you say. “Couldn’t chance it with us being on equal terms, could you. Having doubts?”

The soldiers around Anatu draw closer together, eyes searching blindly.

Anatu cocks her head to one side. “None whatsoever, despite the faithlessness of my commanders. Even less so now, given every bone in your arm must be shattered.”

Your lips peel back in a snarl. “I came here for a fight. I’m fucking gonna get one.”

The heiress smiles broadly, and she shoes away her soldiers. “Leave me.” Obediently, the fatigued men loose ranks and make way for their lady. She takes a long step forward, brushing her fictitious hair over her shoulder. “My challenge yet stands. Submit or die, Daughter of Corithis,” she announces, her light eyes piercing the shadows.

I g2g but I just want Anons to remember we have corrupting hex and induce agony. So we can blast away a Bitches arcane defenses and then pin her down with summons and make her suffer. Also 8m is a decent distance away for someone as sneaky as us.

FYI Stygians focus on illusions, not psychic attacks. That's Belphegorans.

But we do have our Dad's scope and we can communicate psychically with monster.
>>
We should also keep in mind that we need to rescue Mr Crowther. If he dies, then all of this is pointless.
>>
What options. Luckily you have a third choice in mind.

You burn your well by that waterfall place down in Sierra National Forest, directing its freed reservoir of arcana into summoning Monster.

He appears out of a crackle of fire, his lizardous form both larger and spinier than usual. “Infinite cosmic power!” he croons in your mind. (Infinite Crisis Edition Monster: 10 HP, 20 PP)

You call in the rest of the team as well – this is as main of an event as you’ve ever known. The all-stars of all ages assembled for one final climactic battle with evil. Out of a bubble of darkness lopes Night Tiger, shadowy tendrils trailing in his wake. An eruption of sulphurous smoke gives birth to Crabby. And flashes of erupting flame give life the Wonder Twin hounds Thing 1 and Thing 2. They run after Crabby, barking and snarling as they go.

You give your as-of-yet unnamed Ashwight the go-ahead as well, the thick cloud cover providing more than enough shelter from the sun for his skinless flesh. The bipedal creature hunches up and darts off at speed, quickly overtaking the hounds, Crabby, and Tiger all to rush Anatu first.

You run with them, rehearsing the command words of the blood curse you have in mind for the Heiress.

Anatu gives up her glamors, finally assuming her true form for the shock value. But already aware of her hugeness, you are not surprised. The demon holds out a hand, in which appears a long-bladed spear. Lettered runes inscribed in the blade flare up with emerald light.

Your Ashwight charges head on, heedless of the thread.

Anatu surges forward, jaw set as she surges forward, her superior footing giving her solid fighting footing.

The wight vanishes into thin air, leaving her off balance for Tiger to launch a volley of bone spines at her.

She jerks her head, and up appears a wall of interlocked shields. The spines burry themselves up to the heft in the conjured wood.
>>
>>71116

The shields hang for a fraction of a moment in the air all together, before they collapse into a pile before Anatu. (Anatu: -3 PP 53)

You come in for your own attack, running up behind Crabby. You feel Monster direct the others to run interference for you as you prepare the curse.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 charge in to Anatu, tongues lolling with bloodlust. Behind them, you leap up onto Crabby’s back, using him as a platform to leap into the air, pumping yourself up further still on the invisible aether underfoot. (-2PP: 45/47) Far above the ground now, you shove your wings down with all your might, your shadow catching air and thrusting you even higher.

Anatu backpedals, expecting you to strike from above. At the same time, Thing 1 leaps at her, jaws gaping.

She swings her spear around and catches Thing 1 in the nose, sidestepping as hellhound tumbles out of the air, rolling aside from her. The wound in the hound’s nose smokes with sickish green vapor. The animal frantically attempts to rub the stuff off with his paws, but the flames give no indication his efforts have chance for success.

Thing 2 executes his attack just as you throw down with your sick curses. You send your will shooting down the inscriptions on your aching shoulder, power licking out at Anatu. “Sakheritan!” you shout.

The curse rebounds off an invisible barrier, sliding off a foot shy of Anatu’s flesh.

You land just as Thing 2 latches his teeth onto Anatu’s arm. His teeth bite down through the tough carapace of her arm. (Anatu: -2 HP 88) She flings her arm out, but finds herself unable to dislodge the creature. Angered, she utters a word that shakes the air. “Fade,” she commands. (Anatu: -5 PP: 48)

Thing 2 fades into transparency and disappears.

Anatu draws back her spear and thrusts it toward you, and speaks again with that same trembling power. “Open your eyes.” (Anatu: -8 PP: 40)

A half-transparent Monster swoops down between you and her. “Interception!” he shrieks, catching the invisible spell mid-flight in his claws. (Monster: 16 PP) He flaps off, beating a hasty retreat into the mist.

Tiger launches another spine at Anatu, which she blocks with a single shield this time. (Anatu: -1 PP: 39)

Suddenly, your Ashwight makes another appearance, dashing out from the mist. Strikes through, laying a long slash on Anatu’s flank, vanishing again as soon as Anatu attempts to strike a counterattack with her enchanted spear. (-4 HP: 84)

Slow Crabby meanwhile crawls ever closer, causing Anatu to take a couple furtive steps back to gain maneuvering room. “Pests!” she cries, peering down her pointed jaw at you. “Face me with your own strength, Sierra!”

You contemplating letting loose with your lake cat boon for vengeance power and doing just that.

You smirk. “These guys are my own strength, lady,” you say.

Anatu makes an incoherent, very frustrated sound, just as Tiger shoots again at her. She bends to the side, dodging the spine. “I did not come here to fight your menagerie!” she bellows.

Heh. Menagerie. You’re glad you had Orias mastermind your Heltic lessons – the Vincains have a menagerie of hounds in their summer palace. (-2 Stress: 45)

Meanwhile, you’re still actually in a fight. The Heiress bends forward and charges at you with spear lowered, her many legs working in unison.

Sadly, Crabby turns to try to cover the distance between himself and her. Maybe you jumped the gun just a bit on summoning him. Would’ve been nice to drop him between you and Anatu right now.

Anyway, the good thing is that if she’s charging you, she’s an easy target. But maybe too easy.

You stop listening to your eyes and feel out the vibes. You sense a heated presence of emotion coming at you from the side. Perfect. You flick out your spear and flick out the outline of a five-pointed star, anchoring your will in each corner. The corrupting energy flashes out into the empty air.

While her false image charges you from the front, the real Anatu appears charging in from the side, too alarmed by trying to disarm the hex to maintain her illusion. There’s not enough time for her countermeasure.

The star crashes against the barrier before her. Like saran wrap versus fire, Anatu’s defenses peel back. The transparent bubble shield burns with white light, spreading out from where the hex struck against her charm.

At the last moment you fling yourself to the side. “Sakheritan,” you shout again, hitting her with another blood curse – this time you feel the magic complete its arc and lace into Anatu’s flesh. (-4 PP: 33) (+1 Fury: 46)
>>
She swears as the curse takes root within her, blood seeping from the corner of her maw. In answer, she sweeps out with her own spear, the runes leaving blazing green streaks in the air. She flashes a couple inches closer than she was – it was a trick, a trap. (+1 Stress: 46)

The subtlety of the illusion catches you off guard, and the point of her blade nicks your thigh before you knock her weapon away with your own spear. (-1 HP: 28/35)

Anatu senses her advantage and presses the attack, launching forward with a repeated jabs from her spear that you barely manage to dodge. (+1 Stress: 47)

But before you get put on the ropes, your secret weapons give you a break. Thing 1, snout still burning from the emerald smoke, jumps up onto Anatu’s back, seizing the joint of one of Anatu’s legs between his teeth. Her carapace buckles and bleeds with inexplicable softness under the force of his bite. (Anatu: -4 HP: 84)

Anatu is forced to break early from her assault to turn and address the hellhound gnawing on one of her thighs. She twirls her spear around and skewers Thing 1 in the ribs. The blade snaps through his ribs – despite efforts to hold on, the weakened hound is forced off onto his back, green smoke hissing from his wounds.

Preoccupied as she is with the hound, Anatu almost doesn’t notice the low-crouched wight charging forward at speed. But something tips her off, and she whirls around just in time to meet the threat. At least if he hadn’t disappeared again, before she could hit him with her half-sword half-spear thing.
>>
>>71615

You take advantage of the distraction value of your summons to pull back further, gaining a comfortable distance between you and Anatu’s superior reach and physical might. Seriously, she’s a big lady.

Tiger circles around from behind Anatu, attempting to get her pinned between you and the advancing Crabby.

“Push her into Crabby?” Monster suggests in your mind, surveying the action from above.

Not a bad idea, but you’ll need every edge you can get in a straight fight. You prepare to channel your inner Ranthix and unlock the spirit of vengeance the Great Lynx left to you.

A flare of terrible rage fills your heart and mind, thirsting for blood, calling for pain. Anatu’s pain. Anatu’s blood. With the electric charge of wrath comes a second wind, an uneasy and unsettling eagerness in your claws, your jaw, and your limbs. (+20 Fury: 66) (+1 HP: 29)

Persistence seething pain builds in your leg, cutting through your mind like a hot knife. Green wisps of power waft from the shallow wound like a freaking fog machine. (-2 HP: 27/35) (-3 PP: 30) (+3 Stress: 50) (+2 Fury: 68)

Burn the wound, destroy the flesh cut by the spear. Start shooting her. Crabby can close in with the noise we make, and we should keep away from CQC. Buff our bullets since her shields are down to get in extra damage.

thanks m8

You're one of my favorite quests because you seem to be in it for the story no matter how long it takes. Rather than accelerating things at an artificial pace or doing massive timeskips to cut down on length, it's really nice.
>>
do we have Zelathis? it has a knockback attack. for pushing her into Crabby.

I'm thinking we block her vision by exploding and hurling flames about with the tendrils. if we manage to make her look away, we can attack from an unexpected angle. the shadow teeth thing may provide additional distraction by making her shield flash about and hopefully between that, the flames and arcane strength/corrupting hex we can break it.

I also suggest using touch-range blood magic if we get through, they seem pretty effective.
>>
>>71643
>>71666
Forgot about using Stain of Sin as well.

Best case scenario the spear acts semi sentiently and it opens up the ability to use our claws and spikes as well.
1d6+2d5+ Blood Curse Debuff+Hexing Debuff+whatever the Izhowak spears damage is. Seems pretty nasty.
>>
>>71621
>Tactics (?)

Stay the fuck out of close combat. We've knocked out her magic protection and it's time to show her why you should never bring a sword to a gun fight.

Corrupt our gun & use that, using Sluggy as a mobile living flesh shield. If he can't make it to her, then we'll make her have to come to him.

Monster and the Weight can stay back and make attacks of opportunity against her, darting in and out before she can respond and keeping her from reaching us while we shoot her the fuck up.

Why the hell does everyone want to go hand to hand with someone bigger and tougher than us when we have better options?

>>71652
Thanks for running!
>>
>>71683
Shoot even the timeskips feel really natural. Not everything is rushed but when push comes to shove Languid makes sure the pacing stays consistent. Nothing feels ignored I guess which is really nice.
>>
>>71695
Hey, not everyone mate. >>71636
Also, you should either support or come up with a method for resolving our little DoT.
>>
>>71695
...So far I'm the only one advocating for close quarters it seems. People want to use Zelathis for its lightning from range, and shadows for the same reason.
I just feel that there are more benefits than detriments by overwhelming her all at once.
Especially since we have her marked and once we're on her it would be extremely hard for us to be taken off.
>>
>>71703
I feel like she's specced out for close combat because that's what she expected from us, especially given Nabuth has been feeding her info, so I'd prefer to not do what she's prepared for and instead continue to not get fucked by someone with so much more health than us.
>>
>>71697
Bullets, Anon. Lots of bullets. You know what sucks a lot? Getting shot.

Like I said, use Sluggy as a meatshield so she either has to start dealing with him and his close up fuckery, or continue to get picked apart.

It's not like we're on a time limit here.
>>
>>71713
I can see that, I'm just seeing that since she is our only current opponent it would also be a good idea to stay close because when we drink her blood we also regenerate health as well. And anything that big has got a lot of blood.
>>
>>71718
Actually we kinda are. The Yellow Raincoat might be on its way here specifically for Sierra.
>>
>>71695
I figured her magic shield would've gone back up, or that she could bring it back up with PP. if that isn't the case, ranged abilities are obviously the better option.

do we not have any inscribed blood magic? she can probably resist things like limb hijacking and paralysis, but it'll distract and hurt her. if her shield is down for ever, it's probably time to stack all the debuffs. just use all the belphegor pain curses and stack the blood magic on top and she won't be able to fight worth shit.

hell, she might even suffer enough pain to become susceptible to sap will and then terrorizing glare. which would be perfect for making her give up Crowther.
>>
>>71729
...I still want to go Bloody Ripper on her but I can see that it would be a good idea to stack as many debuffs as possible before going in for the kill. You got my support for that right now then.
>>
>>71726
That's who Isaac and the whole Heavenly Host of the United States of America (and also a Dragon and a Star-Spawn Canadian) are dealing with instead of being here with us.

>>71729
I would assume Nobility would be inured against that sort of psychic attack given that they're far more vulnerable in social situations.

I'm just saying, let's not give up a bunch of advantages for a Khornate charge. Make her come to us, make her pay for every step, and THEN fuck her up at close range when she gets there.

I mean, we should also probably do something about that whole "Spear wound that's eating away both our health AND OUR POWER." Doesn't that seem a little familiar? I wonder if it's just vanishing or . . . . .

Also, she seems to be pretty adept at using her illusions for close combat when we don't have time to react to them, but at range we are able to see through them in time.
>>
>>71762
Well let's hope they don't all come back singing the praises of not!cthulhu
>>
>>71621
>Tactics?
Try Corrupting Hex on your spear wound to close it.
>>
>>71762
I would not assume that someone surrounded by fanatical sycophants who are more than happy to give up their life to be your mate gives you much room to build much strength of character.
If anything, she's an overgrown brat with enough power and loyal subordinates to enforce her will.
>>
>>71847
If it weren't for the fact that as Heir apparent she would have to deal with Belphegorans, you might have a point there.

You might.

Also, if these were actually her troops she might be able to command them to return Crowther. She might.
>>
>>71865
She won't.

And they're not her troops, they're her moms troops.
>>
>>71762
I think you might be underestimating pain.

that said, using the ranged debuffs first and attacks from faster summons, zelathis and our other abilities to knock her into the big guy before moving on to the touch-range blood spells might be a good idea. even using verwelken shenanigans, going into close combat as she is now would entirely depend on rolling well.

but again, none of that stuff will work if she gets her shield up, basically giving us no other choices. the Lynx stuff I feel like we shouldn't abuse too much, given what happened to the previous guy who got too liberal with them.
>>
>>71652
Thanks for running!
