Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest! On today's episode, we are going to get the perspective of someone outside the New Defenders, but closely linked to one of them: Kotal Kahn, Emperor of Outworld and adoptive father of the thief prince Cao Kahnzedah.

In recent events, Noob Saibot attempted to unleash a deadly plague through the use of a magic orb by seeping his necrotic essence into the heroes of old in order to lure the New Defenders into his realm and destroy them. But this failed when he was suddenly betrayed by his supposed ally Havik, and due to the intervention of Shang Tsung, the heroes emerged from the Netherrealm with the orb in hand.

With the magic disease gone, our Emperor (who was himself afflicted) awakens to the news, and is none too pleased...

Kotal Kahn's eyes shoot open and he sits up, gripping the sheets tightly. He realizes that he is in his bedchamber, and that there are several attendants who are shocked by his sudden awakening. One of them comes forward and urges him to sit back. "Calm, my Emperor, do not exert yourself."

"What happened? What is going on?" he demands. His memory is like black fog; the last thing he can recall is standing on one of his balconies overlooking Z'unkahrah when all became darkness.

"A sudden illness, my Emperor. We rushed you back here with all haste and called upon the greatest and most knowledgeable medicine men in the kingdom."

"Fortunately you had me instead," a feminine voice speaks. The osh-tekk's eyes are drawn to the doorway, where his First Minister, Ruby, stands. "Are you well, Kahn?"

Kotal brings a hand to his chest. Though he feels fatigue and a strange sensation yet lingering within him, he nods. "I am. Ruby, tell me, what disease was I cursed with?"

"I do not think it was a disease, so much as it was a poison," she replies.

His eyes burn brightly. "You mean to imply that someone dared poison me?"

She sits on the edge of his bed. "I cannot know. Its symptoms matched no known disease to me, and its sudden and rapid nature leads me to think it was magical in nature."

Though angered by this news, he remains calm and stoic as he thinks for several moments. "How long was I in bed with this?"

"Half a day, thankfully," she replies. "There was little in the way of governance that you missed."

"Good. I will not have my kingdom crumble around me while I lay in sickness." He looks on the nearby golden nightstand and sees his feathered crown. He reaches for it and grasps it in his hands while he rises. "Not until my time has truly passed."

He slides the crown onto his forehead while the servants fix his bedsheets. Ruby rises and approaches him. "Your command, my Emperor?"

"Ruby, I want you to continue learning as much as you can about this illness. Report to me when you have discovered something."

"Yes, my Emperor. At once."

She bows and leaves as Kotal's servants prepare the remainder of his garments. Once fully dressed in his imperial regalia and the ceremonial vestments of his people and culture, Kotal leaves his bedchamber and proceeds to the throne room. As he walks through the halls, servants bow and kneel respectfully when he passes them, outworlder and osh-tekk alike.

Once in the throne room, he moves to the balcony where he last recalls being conscious. His hands come to rest on the stone railing.

'A curious thing...' he thinks to himself. 'Whatever fool dared attack me in so cowardly a manner will receive nothing short of the greatest of reprisals. My fury will be brought to bear against this foe.'

He looks out over his magnificent city. It has seen so much: the rule of Onaga, the rule of Shao Kahn, thousands of years of subjugation and torment, civil war for control of the throne, the recent siege by the returned Dragon King, but still it has endured, risen from the ashes like the mighty phoenix time and time again, growing stronger through the ages.

'This great city shall stand for all time,' Kotal thinks with pride. 'I must be as my home: unyielding and strong, unafraid of any challenge.'

But this poison, this sudden illness, gives him great pause. If an enemy can attack him in such a way, with no defense against him, what can be done? And what would happen should another attempt be made? He does not even know if the attack failed. As he places his hand over his heart, he wonders if some fragment of the sickness may yet remain within him, waiting to grow and strike another day.

Though he does not like to admit it to himself, and certainly would not like to do so to anyone else, this brush with sudden and unavoidable mortality has made him think of his legacy. Were he to die, would Cao be ready to assume responsibility of the throne?

'No. He is not ready.'

After a few moments of looking out over the city, Kotal finds that he is still somewhat weak. Perhaps it is merely fatigue, perhaps it is the illness, but he wishes to clear his head. He walks out of the throne room and down a grand staircase before passing through several chambers. These rooms are ones of relaxation and comfort, with small fountains and pleasing decorations, but he wishes for more fresh air. The exit to the gardens is in the greenest room of all, for small streams of crystal-clear liquid flow through a complex system to water not only the plants in this room but the ones outside as well.

Kotal steps out into the gardens and back out into the warmth of the sun. Standing here makes him feel slightly rejuvinated; the gardens are undoubtedly the most beautiful section of the imperial palace, as well as the most sweet-smelling. He takes in the aroma of the many exotic species of flowers and strides forward.

Two guards stand at attention as he passes by them. They remain still as statues, dutifully guarding the entrance back to the palace.

In the gardens, Kotal spies a small girl. He knows her well, for she is one of his two adopted daughters: Hua. She is carefully picking flowers and humming gently to herself, and has not yet noticed the Emperor.

Kotal pauses for a moment. Of all the interraction he has had with his new children, Hua is the one with whom he has spent the least amount of time. Perhaps it is her youth, being only a child of twelve, or perhaps it is due to his intimidating nature. He cannot say. He has left her education and care primarily in the hands of the eldest child Sanra and his First Minister, the latter of whom has taken an especially active hand in teaching her. It is his understanding that the child is the most intelligent of all three of his adopted children, for she can read, write and takes to learning very quickly.

He ponders briefly if he should speak to her.

With his arms behind his back, he approaches the girl and speaks, albeit with a slightly more reserved tone than normal. "Hello, child. How does this day find you?"

She looks up, surprised to suddenly see him alongside her, and takes a step back. Her fingers wrap tightly about the flowers in her hands. Though she does not outwardly shake, he can see trepidation in her eyes. Despite this, she responds, "Hello... Emperor."

Kotal's eyes drift off to the side for a moment, then return to her. "May I ask you a question?"

She nods.

"When you see me, what is your first reaction?"

A bit sheepishly, she replies, "Hide."

A smile grows on his lips and he lets out a chuckle. "I suppose that is what saved you for many years when you lived outside the walls of my palace. But you need not hide any more, young one." He turns and sits on the stone edge of one of the flower rows and invites her to sit next to him. After a moment, she does. "I find it pleasing to see you here. These gardens are a good place to spend one's time."

"I like it here," she admits. "I read about flowers when I was smaller but never got to see many."

"Well, we have them in abundance. But be careful which ones you pick, some can be deceptively dangerous."

She nods. "Ruby taught me which ones are bad."

"Do you like your lessons?"

She nods again, but does not reply. A few moments of awkward silence pass between the comparatively giant osh-tekk and the small outworlder. Kotal thinks about how little he knows about interracting with children and that perhaps he should either make a greater effort or leave.

As she plays gently with the flowers in her hands, he looks over and asks, "So, you enjoy reading then?"

"Yes," she nods once more, keeping her eyes from his.

"What manner of books do you enjoy?"

She seems thrown off by the question. "Ruby has a lot of different kinds at her library. I can only read one at a time, though."

Kotal smiles. "As can I. As much as I would enjoy having four hands like our shokan allies, I cannot read two books at once." His joke earns a small and short giggle from her. When she is done, he asks, "Tell me, Hua: what do you think you would like to do when you grow up?"

"Um... I don't know. I think I'd like to write."

"A noble endeavor, for one to share their own knowledge. What would you write about?"

"Maybe my brother," she thinks. "I think I like books about history the most. I read a lot about all of the other realms that exist and all the ones that make up Outworld. I could write about how he saved us and all that he did."

Kotal feels a slight swell of pride from her words about Cao. Though his achievements are his own, Kotal has always felt that he helped shape Cao into the figure he became, at times both indirectly and directly.

"History is important," he nods approvingly. "I believe it is an Earthrealm proverb, but one that holds true throughout all of the realms, 'Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.' Learning history and the triumphs and failures of those who came before us gives us the wisdom to make decisions about which we cannot know the consequences."

She listens closely to his words and then speaks, "I read about Edenia, and how Shao Kahn took it over, and how it was restored. They say it is the most beautiful realm in all of existence."

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think Outworld is beautiful, in a way." When that doesn't seem to get much of a reaction out of her, he adjusts, saying, "But... for the aspects of traditional beauty, yes, Edenia is certainly a paradise."

"Maybe there are other realms that are nice," she muses. She looks up and asks, "Why don't we free them from Outworld?"

Kotal sits back slightly. This is a difficult question, with difficult answers. He was not expecting it from her.

Thankfully, however, Skarlet suddenly appears, walking out from the nearby bushes. She kneels in front of the Emperor.

"My Kahn. I beg the intrusion, but Ruby and your council have sent for you. The matter is urgent."

Kotal looks over at Hua and says, "I shall speak with you on this soon, I give you my word."

She seems to understand as he rises and approaches Skarlet. The blood construct and protective guardian of his children moves aside to allow him to pass. He again walks by the two guards from earlier and enters the palace, moving up the stairs.

He approaches the doors to the council chambers and pushes them open. Within are all of his advisors and other appointed figures, all seated around a large table. Seated alongside his empty chair is Ruby, whose eyes are fixated upon the chair whose back is facing the Emperor. When she sees Kotal entering, she rises for the Emperor, as do all of the others, except the one in the chair he cannot see, much to the displeasure of some at the table.

Kotal's eyes drift to it to see whom she is looking at, and is surprised when none other than Cao pokes his head out from in front of it. "Hello, father," he says simply, waving a hand. "Feeling better?"

The emperor lowers a hand to indicate they should all sit. "My son. What has brought you to my council chambers?"

Cao kicks his legs up and rises, spinning around the chair to face him fully. "Well, as comfortable and..." he looks at the council members who don't particularly care for him as he adds, "...'welcoming' as your council is, I come with news from the team."

"What word from the New Defenders?"

"You were sick, yes?" Cao asks, walking over to a nearby table that is laid out with fruit. He picks up a red fruit and rubs it on his chest to shine it. "You weren't the only one."

Kotal moves around to his chair but does not sit. He places his hands on the back of it and says, "Go on, then. Who else?"

"A lot of people. Kaito, Johnny Cage, Princess Kitana and Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Master Bo' Rai Cho and more." He pauses for a moment. "Sheeva, Kung Lao... A lot."

"So this was no coincidence," Kotal realizes. "And who is responsible for this attack?"

"Noob Saibot," Cao replies, taking a big bite out of the fruit. He chews lazily before swallowing. "He used some kind of magical orb and tried ot turn everyone into wraiths like him."

There are mutterings throughout the council chamber as Cao sits back down and rests his feet upon the table. "But we stopped him, which is why you're still alive. I wish I could take most of the credit, but that's part of this whole 'team' thing I'm getting used to, is sharing the just desserts."

"Take your feet off the table when you speak to the Emperor!" Nemir Rajah demands.

Kotal raises a hand. "And what of Noob Saibot? Was he destroyed?"

"We got the orb from him, and his alliance with Havik is no more, far as we can tell. He can no longer spread the 'Wraith-Plague' with it."

"But we have another problem," Ruby says.

Kotal motions for Ruby to be silent for now and sits in his chair. He looks at the relaxed prince somewhat disapprovingly. "Sit properly. You may act as you please with your team upon their island, but in my palace you are once more the Kahnzedah."

Cao's smile dims somewhat as he wipes his lips clean. He sits back and puts his feet on the floor.

The Emperor places his hands upon the armrests of his chair. "Now, speak from the beginning. Leave no stone unturned."

The thief then launches into a description of all that had happened, from the moment Kung Lao fell ill during his and Kung Ling's training. They returned to the island, learned quickly what was happening and travelled to the Netherrealm.

Cao spared no small detail in describing what the hellish realm had become. Between his first and subsequent trips, it had changed dramatically, becoming a place of desolation and dust, except for the regions in which the Deadly Alliance held sway. He revealed how they infiltrated Shinnok's spire and reached the top, only for Noob to spring his trap and ensnare them all.

"Had Shang Tsung and Havik not intervened, things could have gone much worse," he admits. "But with Noob distracted by him, Shang created the portal that we all escaped through. Once back, he worked some magic on the orb and cured everyone, but as I understand it, simply having the orb out of his hands stopped it."

"I must interrupt," Ruby says. "The illness may be gone from you, my Emperor, but Noob Saibot appears to have had other plans to weaken our realms."

"Speak," he bids her.

"I only just began receiving reports not long ago. It seems some people in our city have fallen ill with a strange sickness that is causing them to spew black oil from their mouths. The guards are attempting to round them up.

"Wraith-Plague," Cao mutters.

Kotal feels his grip on the armrests tighten. "How can this be?"

Cao shrugs. "I don't know much about how the disease works. The people back at the island are working in their labs to figure it out."

Ruby speaks again. "It is possible that Noob Saibot, in addition to directly implanting his necrotizing oil into the bodies of those who rule and protect the realms he sees as his enemies, may have also spread some of it to the people of the realms as well. It may very well be able to spread, my Emperor, and if so, we have a great emergency upon our hands."

There are once more whispers and murmurings throughout the room as Kotal sits silently for a moment, contemplating this latest news.

Kotal's fingers loosen on the armrests as he stands up and walks over to one of the windows that dominates the room. His arms come to his back.

"Ruby, return to me with the Portal Stone."

She stands up. "Emperor?"

"It is my intention to speak with the leaders of other realms. I wish to know if they, too, are dealing with this plague, and if so what must be done to combat it. A lesson learned from the siege and the New Defenders is strength through cooperation. Noob Saibot did not make this attack on Outworld alone, he attacked Earthrealm, Edenia and perhaps more. We must call upon old allies and confer with them."

Ruby bows and leaves, heading for the treasure vault.

Kotal turns around and looks at the merchant-baron, Shukojin. "You will ensure that this plague does not spread to the markets, Shukojin." Next he looks at Nemir Rajah. "If need be, prepare a ship for the sick. If this plague can truly spread, we must contain them outside of the city, perhaps upon a nearby island." The nemir bows his head as Kotal looks at Hachiman. "Instruct the guards to use as little violent means as necessary. Plagues breed in filth and blood, so spread as little blood as possible."

The masked man bows. Kotal returns to the head of the table and sits back down, looking across it at Cao. "What of this orb? What have the New Defenders done with it?"

"It is well-guarded on our island," he replies. "We got it back from Noob, and now we don't intend to lose it."

Kotal nods. "Very well. But at some point, I would like to see it."

"What of the New Defenders? They sent you here, yes? Did they send word to other realms as well?"

"They did. I'm expected back within the hour; now that I've delivered the message anyway." He pauses and casts his eyes to the others before addressing Kotal again. "I'm worried about my sisters."

"They will not be harmed by this plague. I swear it upon my life." He pauses briefly. "Now, I am curious about this matter of Shang Tsung..."

Kotal is about to speak once more when the doors to the chamber open and in strides his father, Kotal K'etz. The former ruler of the osh-tekk approaches him, walking around the table.

"Father," Kotal says in greeting. Cao looks up, cocking a brow. His father and his adopted son have very rarely ever spent much time together, and the opinions of the former in regards to the latter were made quite clear to Kotal after the ceremony following Onaga's defeat.

"Emperor. Something grave has occurred." K'etz looks around at the table. "We must speak of this in private."

"Must we?"

K'etz looks at Cao in particular, then back to Kotal. "This is an osh-tekk matter."

Kotal nods. "Very well. With me."

He walks his father to the balcony to leave his son and the council members to speak amongst themselves. Once beyond the shroud of a curtain, K'etz speaks in a hushed tone.

"Luliya's father is sick."

Kotal turns to him, his eyes narrowing as he asks, "Sick how?"

"He became ill some time yesterday, and has since begun to leak black bile from his lips. His veins darken and his skin is cold."

Kotal closes his eyes and lets out a sharp sigh through his nostrils. "Yes. I am aware of this plague."

"Is there any cure?"

"None that we know of yet. Other realms may be experincing it as well. It concerns me greatly that it affects not only outworlders, but osh-tekk and other peoples as well..."

K'etz ignores that point and brings up another. "You know what this means, do you not? If Mazatl passes, she will inherit his home and our plans for her may need to be pushed forward."

"There is no need for talk of this at this time. There is a sickness facing the people of Outworld and I must face it first and foremost."

K'etz holds up a finger. "You would do well to remember, son, the agreement between our houses. They must keep their faith in you, as must the osh-tekk people. The agreement must be fulfilled."

Kotal closes his eyes and rubs his forehead under his helm. "I am well aware of the words that were exchanged, father. No blood contract was made, so until such time, I will not force the Kahnzedah into a marriage. I have given him my word I would not."

"Do not lose the faith of the osh-tekk," K'etz warns. "In this time of uncertainty, we cannot afford it."

Kotal turns and walks back into the council chamber, where Ruby stands with the portal stone upon a plush pillow in her hands.

Kotal approaches the Portal Stone and picks it up. He looks over at Cao and says, "If you need to return to the island, I shall go with you."

Cao sits up, surprised. "Very well. I think they'll be surprised; I'm fairly certain the base has never had an Emperor visit."

"But they are no stranger to royalty, as they deal with you on a daily basis."

The prince smirks. "Yeah, but I'm not as royal as you are."

"Indeed not." Kotal turns to Ruby and instructs her to summon his elite warriors. Several minutes later, after this is done and they are here, he creates a golden portal leading to Shang Tsung's island. Ruby stands ready at his side as several guards approach, also ready to accompany the Emperor.

Kotal looks back at his father and nods at him. His father offers an osh-tekk salute as the group goes through the portal. Kotal Kahn, Cao, Skarlet, Ruby, Erron Black, Ferra and Torr, along with several guards, are soon standing on the beach, looking upon the New Defenders base. Kotal folds his arms behind his back as he hands the Portal Stone back to Ruby. "An impressive fortress. I have always admired the earthrealmers and their architecture."

"It's alright," Cao says with a shrug. "The beds are nice."

Kotal gives him a strange look. "I can only imagine. But I am here to begin talk with your leaders about this plague and what we intend to do about it, and the Netherrealm. We can meet inside or here upon the beach. Go forth and alert them to my presence."

Cao moves up, with Skarlet accompanying him. Kotal looks at Erron Black and motions for him to approach. When he does, the cowboy looks around the island and says, "Been a while since I've been here."

"Indeed. Two tournaments ago, was it?"

"Three."

"I hope you know your way around still. I imagine Shang Tsung is still in his island palace. I want you to go there."

"Approach him. Speak with him. Learn what he is doing and why."

"I'm curious myself," Erron admits. "Anything special in mind?"

"For now, I wish to merely understand what his goal is. You were once hired by him, so he may consider you a neutral party. Learn what it is he is going allying himself with the New Defenders."

The gunslinger nods and moves off into the jungle. Ruby stands dutifully alongside the Emperor. Nearby, Torr draws circles in the sand while Ferra watches, mesmerized.

Just then, further up the beach, a portal opens. Kotal and his men all turn around to see who it is, with his guards taking position, ready to defend their Emperor. From this swirling vortex emerges several figures, knights in purple armor wielding polearms, who take up similar positions.

The last two figures to emerge take Kotal by great surprise: Princess Kitana of the Edenian Royal Family, accompanied by none other than Earthrealm's Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kang.

The portal closes behind them as they approach. Ruby looks up at the Kahn, waiting for him to make the first move.

Kotal Kahn signals his men to stand down as the princess and Shaolin approach. He greets them. "Princess Kitana. It has been too long since last we met under circumstances that were not forced by an enemy's hand. I long for the days of peace following Shinnok's invasion and lament their passing as we find ourselves in this dark time."

Although one would find it risky to bring up Shinnok's invasion to an Edenian princess, Kitana bows her head slightly. "And I as well, Kotal Kahn. Our kingdoms seem only to interract when a threat looms, but we cannot ignore the threat facing us any longer."

"And you, Liu Kang, I see that the immortatility enjoyed by all champions of Mortal Kombat has been kind to you."

The monk puts his hands together and bows to the Emperor in courtesy. "Kotal Kahn."

Though he is of few words to the Outworld Emperor, Kitana steps forth to continue the conversation with her silver tongue. "No doubt you are here for the same reasons as we. Too long has Edenia been content with keeping to itself and out of the affairs of other realms, but no more. We seek cooperation between our realms and our peoples to once more face the threat that rises from the Netherrealm."

"You assume correctly, princess. I have come with my son to this island to speak with the leaders of Earthrealm."

"And speak we will," a voice calls out. The two assembled groups turn to behold General Cage approaching with her husband and Colonel Briggs, alongside Akayama Kaito and Sheeva. Sonya approaches and stands in front of them with her hands on her hips. "Well, I can see we've all woken up from our surprise nap."

"Sonya, Johnny," Liu says with a smile, approaching them to exchange greetings and meet. Kotal Kahn nods respectfully at the Earthrealm representatives.

Kitana walks up to the Emperor. "Though we did not expect to see you here, Emperor, my father and mother have expressed a desire to host a meeting in the Edenian Royal Palace. I would take this time to offer you my invitation to join as the leader of Outworld, that we all may discuss the Netherrealm, Noob Saibot and the Deadly Alliance."

Kotal considers this for a moment. 'A trip to Edenia would be rather pleasant...'

"Very well, I accept this and am honored that the Edenian Royal Family would host me in their home. Provided, of course, the others accept as well..."

That's when Kaito makes himself known. "Emperor. Princess. This is a nice reunion, isn't it?"

"Indeed," Kitana says with a smile. "In fact, I believe this island is where many of us met for the first time."

"Yeah, funny how life worked out that way, isn't it?" he smiles. "Too bad we're all here because we nearly died. Well, I'd say that the kids did well, didn't they?"

Johnny Cage walks up. "Well? They kicked ass, Kaito. They really stepped up and made it happen. We should throw 'em a party or something."

Liu then speaks. "Actually, that's another reason we wished to come here about: we also extend our invitation to the palace to your team, both in the interest of working together and as thanks for stopping Noob Saibot."

Kaito smiles at the monk and gives him a thumbs-up. "Of course, we naturally accept."

Kotal Kahn looks over at the two of them. "And when will this conclave take place? I would hope it is as expedient as possible. Not that I wish to rush the hospitality of the royal family, but my people are beset by plague."

"Ours are as well," Kitana explains. "And we know not how to stop it."

"Chances are it's in Earthrealm as well," Sonya says. "But Earthrealm is also much more populated, so it may take time to find out where it's spreading from."

Johnny clasps his hands. "In the meantime, however, let's all get ready for a little journey to Edenia, shall we?"

Kitana faces Kotal. "To answer your question, Kahn, it shall take place tonight. You may arrive of your own means, with whomever you desire to partake in our talks."

"Thank you, princess. I again must express my gratitude for the invitation; long has it been since I last looked upon the greatness of the Edenian palace."

With Sonya, Johnny, Jax, Kaito, Liu, Kitana and Sheeva all in one location, Kotal takes some time to catch up with them all. Here, upon the shores of the island, the difficulties of rule seem a bit further away. Old battles are spoken of; the rebellion against Shao Kahn, the resistance to Shinnok's hordes, the civil war for the control of Outworld. All of them have seen so much, been through so much, that one mere afternoon could not possibly be enough for them to catch up all at once.

Talk of old battles, of course, brings about talk of enemies as well.

"The Deadly Alliance is composed almost entirely of old friends looking for another shot at taking us all out," Kaito says as he shakes his head. "Quan Chi's got them all together as kind of a response to our team."

"They will turn on each other, surely," Kotal says. "Noob Saibot had an alliance of his own, working with Havik. Look what happened to him."

"Good point," Johnny says. "But we can't exactly wait around for them to just take each other out. We need to go on the offensive."

"They baited us into New York the first time we met," Kaito points out. "We need to be ready for them when next they show up. Knowing Quan Chi, it could be anywhere, anytime."

Sonya nods. "That's why I can't authorize the entire team to come to Edenia. We'll bring a few key members, but the rest will need to stay back in case of an emergency."

Kotal understands. "I request that Cao be brought along. I do not believe he has ever been to Edenia; I would like to show him its sights. Perhaps his siblings as well; the youngest has expressed interest in Edenia."

"From one royal family to another, we would be honored," Kitana says.

From the base, Cao emerges, along with several other of his teammates. Accompanying them is none other than Kung Lao, Liu Kang's fellow monk, though the difference in age between them is now very stark. Liu approaches Lao, who is walking with a cane, along with the assistance of the cyborg Cyrax, to speak with him and catch up as well.

Cao walks up to Kotal as his teammates filter into the group to speak to the others about various matters. Kotal looks down at him and asks, "Would you care for a trip to Edenia?"

"What kind of trip?"

"The kind where you will be a guest, will be on your best behaviour, and won't be stealing anything."

"Ouch. Well, will there be free food?"

"Edenia's finest."

"Well then I won't have to steal any, so there's no difference, right? I'm in."

Jacqui then walks up to Cao, who introduces her. "Emperor, you know Jacqui."

"Mostly by reputation, of course. I have not had the pleasure of speaking with you much outside of matters of battle, siege and war."

She meets his hand with a firm grip of her own. "I'm honored, your highness."

After speaking for a brief while with Cao and Jacqui, Kotal excuses himself and walks back up the beach, towards the others of his compliment. He says a few brief words with Ruby, mostly about preparing a return journey to Outworld and for the men to be ready, when Erron Black returns.

He strides out of the jungle and past the others, not exchanging any hello's, and reports to the Emperor. "I met the old bastard."

"Old?"

"He's just an old man now. Hasn't sucked up a single soul since returning."

Kotal strokes his chin. "Curious. What was your impression?"

"He stopped caring. About certain things, not everything mind you. But I think he's got something in mind."

"Such as?"

"Can't guess at it. Don't know if it's evil or not. But it's Shang Tsung. We talked about a few things but I didn't get much out of him; he's an old, rambling fool now. But I don't think he's completely lost it---he has something in mind in the long run."

"You believe that he is only working with the others to benefit himself?"

"It's Shang Tsung, so, yes. And I don't think it's just because they've got maids at his palace to help wait on him."

Kotal nods. "Very well. Prepare for a trip to Edenia; we are heading to Outworld first to gather up some of the others. In a few hours, we shall use the portal stone to travel to the royal palace there."

"Understood."

Leaving Cao here for now, with the instruction that he wear nicer clothing to the palace due to Edenia's high standards, he then creates a portal to his home. His goodbyes with the others are brief---after all, he will see them again tonight. Once returned to the palace, Kotal instructs Ruby on assembling a proper party to visit a foreign kingdom. Everything, from the garb to the sharpness of the guards must be flawless so as to project the regalness and strength of the Outworld Emperor.

Kotal proceeds to his chambers, where he has several servants prepare a slightly more ceremonial attire for him to wear. He also instructs two handmaidens to attend to Hua and Sanra, in order for them to be prepared for tonight. They are going to wear the finest clothing in Outworld.

While Kotal knows this is all for show, it is a matter of pride. Even in these dark times, one cannot forsake tradition and the importance of office, and in all matters, especially ceremonial, appearance can be everything. If he and his retinue travelled to Edenia looking like dogs, his realm would be seen as a mockery.

They will instead see him as he must be seen: as an Emperor.

With the appropriate garb prepared, Kotal is then adorned with the right amount of jewelry. Gold is an important symbol to his people, and he does not shy away from it; his helm and shoulders are adorned in it. Rings of past conquests, trophies of tournament victories and fetishes from the his ancient travels with the Aztec peoples. All of these are prepared and worn.

Next come his weapons. Many are inspired by symbols of powerful animals; leopards, eagles, snakes and other noble beasts that he and his people admire, both osh-tekk and Aztec alike. Kotal has always adhered to more traditional aspects when it comes to weaponry and armor, preferring their style over simpler or modern designs. The macuahuitl, though a weapon long out of favor with modern designers, will always be his preferred tool.

When you face an enemy with this weapon in hand, he will remember you, even long after he is dead and his heart is in your hands.

With this done, Kotal leaves his chambers to inspect his retinue.

The party accompanying Kotal to Edenia is nothing short of magnificent. His daughters are elegantly dressed, his warriors are fierce, and his chief advisors and lieutenants are sharp. Though some of his council remains behind, he does bring some of them with him, such as Namir Rajah and Hachiman. Ruby is wearing her finest dress, and has personally prepared a few fine-looking masked servants to bring along gifts such as wines, weapons and trophy skulls. As this is the first cultural exchange between Edenia and Outworld in twenty years, it must not be taken lightly.

Once all are assembled, including a few followers who will play war drums and bone flutes, Kotal holds aloft the Portal Stone and creates the gateway to Edenia. His retinue begins to parade through, crossing the barrier between realms and stepping onto the grounds of the Grand Palace of Edenia.

They are met with a gathering of Edenian guards, both human and avian, alongside the path, standing tall, proud and disciplined. At the head of the palace, upon a lush carpet, the royal family emerges to greet them, minus Kitana and Mileena. King Jerrod, a tall and regal man, recently returned to life in the past decade, stands alongside his wife, the powerful and equally regal Queen Sindel. As Kotal stops, so too does his party, all going silent as the Emperor moves to stand before the foreign royalty.

As is courteous for a visitor in a foreign land, Emperor or not, Kotal bows before them. "Rise, Kotal," Jerrod bids him. "And welcome."

Kotal stands and accepts his hand, before kissing the hand on his bride upon her purple signet ring. "To visit these grounds again is an honor, your highness."

"You certainly did not come unprepared," Sindel says with bemusement. "Tonight shall be quite the feast. We may require a larger table; we are hosting Earthrealm as well."

Jerrod strokes his beard. "Though, I do not think we should forget why we are here, nor should our celebrations and talks extend beyond the night. Our enemies grow stronger and our peoples grow more sickly by the hour."

Kotal smiles. "Nowhere in the realms could be safer than with such a triumvirate present in one location. Even the Deadly Alliance would shake at the prospect of our own alliance, and I am certain that this plague blighting our peoples will be stopped."

"Had I a goblet, I would toast to that," Sindel says.

"Then let us find drink and a place to enjoy it," Kotal replies, and he and his retinue are invited inside.

As the retinue spreads throughout the palace, Kotal retires to a balcony near the waterfall behind the grand structure with the king and queen. An elaborate table is set where they enjoy Edenian wine in silver goblets and discuss common things; family, rule and threats to the realms.

Asgaarth joins them and together they recall fondly the battles against the forces of Shao Kahn, along with the many other battles in whivh they fought in together and emerged from.

In short order, the other parties arrive. Members of the New Defenders, along with representatives from the Special Forces, Lin Kuei, Shirai-Ryu and more, join with the Outworlders and Edenians. The Dragon Wing arrives, carrying its crew and Captain to join with Kaito and her family.

The grand palace is alive with conversation and laughter as heroes from all over the realms meet and treat with one another. The last gathering of this magnitude was after Onaga's defeat, and Kotal was hosting at that time. Now it is King Jerrod and Queen Sindel's turn, and they do not disappoint. Fine foods are enjoyed, along with sweet drinks and music.

It will not be long before the council is called to discuss the important matters at hand, but for now everyone is content to enjoy each other's company and take in the sights of Edenia.

In the halls of the palace, Kotal takes some time to meet with the heads of Earthrealm as well. Though their elected leaders of their countries could not be present, General Cage and Colonel Briggs represent the best that Earthrealm has to offer and speak for them. Kuai Liang, also recovered from Noob Saibot's assault, is here to represent the Lin Kuei. As one of the foremost defenders and maintainers of a traditional clan-based group of warriors, as well as the man with perhaps the closest connection to Noob Saibot, he is adamant about being here. Leading roughly half of the New Defenders present is Kaito, who is happy to catch up with Kotal as well as many of the others. Grandmasters Hanzo Hasashi and Kung Lao of the Shirai Ryu and Wu Shi Academy respectively are also here, and accompanying the former is none other than Lady Yanake.

"I understand Master Bo' Rai Cho could not be present," Kotal says to her.

She shrugs. "Yes, unfortunately I hear he began drinking strong rice wine as soon as he woke up. He is likely unconscious as we speak."

With Yanake, Kotal has an opportunity to discuss some of the finer points of trade between their two respective landmasses, though he excuses himself and leaves the remainder of that talk to Nemir Rajah, who keeps better track of his fleets. Kotal now shifts his focus to his son, as well as his two daughters, intent on introducing them to various individuals.

Kotal presents Cao to Queen Sindel and King Jerrod. "We did not meet before, but it is my understanding that you are the one who destroyed Shao Kahn's soul," Sindel says.

Cao swallows and keeps his eyes focused on hers, slightly unnerved by her regal bearing. "Yes, your majesty. It was, uh... very difficult."

"I can only imagine," she smiles.

"You may always consider Edenia and our house as your eternal allies for the act you have done," Jerrod says to him, clasping his shoulder and shaking his hand. "Shao Kahn was a blight upon all realms, as was Onaga. Should you ever need anything, you need only ask."

"Thank you... sir," Cao says, not fully trained in proper protocol but trying his best.

As they walk away, Kotal remarks, "You did not do so badly. You are sweating."

"I was trying not to stare at her, you know," he indicates his chest with his hands.

Kotal smirks. "Yes. We all try not to." His eyes go forward as he adds, "We all fail, but only when she isn't looking."

Father and son share a mutual subdued laugh.

Not far away, Kaito is speaking with Mileena over a shared glass of wine. Kotal approaches the two of them. The hybrid wears an outfit that is dissimilar from that which she usually wears; one more designed for elegance than combat. She shares her sister's beauty, though daringly she is not wearing her veil, allowing all to see her face for what it truly is.

Of course, having been around much worse for most of his life, Kotal does not shun or shy away from her. "Kaito, Mileena. It pleases me that you both could attend."

"You as well, Emperor." Kaito looks around. "I see your son is mingling well."

Having split off from Kotal, Cao is now chatting up a pair of edenian palace handmaidens before Jacqui Briggs comes and pulls him away.

"Indeed..." Kotal says as he turns back to them. "Though, given the circumstances, I must wonder when another gathering such as this will take place. Perhaps the announcement of a wedding?" He drinks from his own goblet, letting the implication hang in the air.

Kaito coughs into his hand. "Well, with all that's going on, I think---"

A small gong is rung not far away, meant to signify the summoning of all to the meeting hall.

"Well, look at that, let's go," Kaito says, pulling Mileena along with him.

The princess stops only briefly to whisper to Kotal, "Soon."

The osh-tekk raises an amused brow and proceeds towards the meeting hall.

The meeting hall is a grand and ornate room, with large columns and marble floors, the centerpiece of which is a massive table. Many chairs are set around it, and as everyone filters inside, all take different places around the table. Kotal sits alongside Cao and Sanra while Ruby sits on the other side of Cao.

Kotal looks down at her. "Are you and Hua enjoying Edenia?"

"This place is magnificent," Sanra says, her eyes nearly sparkling since their arrival. "I may need to take more extended diplomatic visits here in the future."

Kotal smirks as King Jerrod takes his position at the head of the table. When everyone is seated, he speaks.

"Strangers from distant lands, friends of old. You have been summoned here to answer the threats of the Netherrealm and beyond. No longer can we remain passive; our enemies are known to us and they will not be content to remain in the Netherrealm for long. Our enemies have already made attacks against us. We must discuss our response."

"We must focus on Noob Saibot," Sub-Zero insists. "He has played his hand and attacked us all. He is no longer content to remain in the Netherrealm; now his influence spreads beyond."

"There is no need to be so hasty," Kaito replies. "We have taken from him the only means he had to attack us. The orb is back in our possession."

Sindel nods in agreement. "Furthermore, Noob has lost his Chaosrealm allies. While we can never consider the chaosrealmers to be allies of ours, Noob's Army of Darkness now is composed solely of that which is found in the Netherrealm."

Kung Ling then stands to speak. "If I may... When Havik betrayed Noob, he spoke of wanting the orb to pass into our hands, that he no longer stood to gain anything from Noob having it."

"What could he possibly have meant by that?" Liu asks. "Havik cannot take on our combined might. He is but one cleric of chaos, and though he has a sizeable following, even Johnny Cage was able to defeat them and protect their Kamidogu from falling into their hands."

Johnny nods. "Yeah, that's right." He then realizes the implication of Liu's words and takes off his sunglasses. "Hey!"

Hanzo sets down his goblet loud enough to get the attention of all. "The Deadly Alliance is the greater threat here. The eternally accursed Quan Chi has revealed himself and his allies. If we are to go on the offensive against a Netherrealm power, it must be against them."

Even without the orb, there is currently a wraith-plague afflicting the common people as we speak. Noob doesn't have the orb anymore, so he must be using another vector to attack with his plague. We can't protect the people if there are no people to protect; curing the wraith-plague is our most immediate concern, and that requires confronting Noob.

With that in mind perhaps a two-pronged approach is best.

Kotal raises his goblet. "We know our enemies, but their tools are what concern me the most. Many of us were afflicted by this 'Waith-Plague' but despite our apparently cured nature, it has spread to our peoples. Already this plague has taken root in my city; people are appearing to become sick seemingly at random."

General Cage stands. "If I may, I believe we know why this is. Our lab technicians have determined that the plague spreads through contact with the oily filth that is thrown up by the sick. This oil is persistant across a variety of environmental conditions, and once contact, even as simple as getting some on your skin, is made, it seeps into one's blood and begins to attack them as it attacked us."

"But how did it get out, if we were the only targets?" Johnny asks.

Sub-Zero taps his fingers on the table. "It is likely that Noob started spreading it as a backup plan. He targetted random people in our realms."

Kotal nods. "One of my people's noblemen has been afflicted. Noob is likely targetting not at random, but people in positions to best destabilize the local governments." He looks at Sonya and says, "You should check the government officials of your home realm, general. A wraith in their position could do much damage."

"That leads to another problem," Sindel says. "When someone dies of this plague, they will turn into a wraith. So far, we have no cure, and death is the least-preferable option we have."

"Those of us with healing magic could possibly cure it," Kaito offers. "My own abilities allow me to do so, as do some of our allies. But... I know someone who is in possession of a large amount of water that could possibly serve as the cure. It has stopped death and even repaired bodies damaged by forced cybernetic augmentation." He looks at Sub-Zero.

The Lin Kuei Grandmaster's eyes hold understanding of his meaning. "You speak of the Wellspring of Shun-Kuto."

Kotal knows this as well. "But all of the water of that wellspring was led away by Turana, for her masters. They declared war on my people and laid siege to Lady Yanake's city during Onaga's insurrection. They provided ships to Onaga's mummified armies---you would ask them for help now?"

Kitana folds her hands together. "It is true that Turana and her masters were for Onaga, in the interest of independence from Outworld. But perhaps this may be an opportunity to broker peace between their people and yours, Emperor, if we could work out an arrangement."

Ask how much Kaito puts stock in Turana. Kotal looks from Kitana to Kaito. "Do you believe for a moment that Turana and her masters would consider this?"

The elementalist sits back in his chair and is quiet for a moment. "I cannot pretend to speak for her while she is not present, but... They supported Onaga in order to get their realm back. She told me as such during my interrogation of her during the siege of Xun-Koto. If Onaga would not listen or hold up his end of their deal, they were likely going to turn on him as well. I would not call them desperate, but I would not think they would part with the water unless you agreed to free Aaru."

"Absolutely not," Kotal says with a note of finality. The room grows quiet as Kotal stands. "I will not allow Aaru's separation from Outworld and allow them to grow into a potentially stronger power when they have already made it clear that their intentions are far from peaceful. They made war on Lady Yanake's city, and supported Onaga. They attempted to attack my city from within with their tower of snakes. Regardless of their intentions towards the Dragon King, since his fall they have made no attempt at peace between our nations."

"What would you suggest, then?" Kitana asks.

"That we march upon their capital in force and take the water. I was content to allow their independence when they withdrew, but I will not allow them to possess a bargaining chip that they can hold against me and my people while this sickness blights my city's streets."

"You would go to war with them, then?" the queen asks. "Even if this council finds the action less than preferable?"

Kotal nods. "I crushed all opposition to my rule during the civil war following Shao Kahn's death. The water, and those holding it, are in Outworld, and it will be dealt by Outworld. I will settle this matter with my armies, but I when I claim the water, I will not keep it for myself. I shall share it with your realms, for you are my allies. While I will not ask for help in going to war, I will accept it if it is given."

"I must advocate finding an alternative solution," Kitana says. "While Turana may have stolen the water, she has used it to build a civilization in a harsh desert land. There are people there who rely upon it. There must be a way to broker peace between them and you."

>I will give them a chance to hand over the water as an offering of fealty to my imperial rule.

Kotal remains firm and unyielding. "I allow Lady Yanake and her people their independence for a number of reasons: we have shared blood in battle, she supported my armies in the war for the throne, and she recognizes my sovereign rule over Outworld. The same goes for the shokan of Kuatan. But Turana and her people have stood in opposition to my rule. They must be made to yield. If they hand over the water peacefully, as an act of contrition for their actions during the insurrection, in recognition of their vassal status or otherwise I will allow them to maintain their independence, provided no further acts against my kingdom or any of my allies are taken in the future. But they must stand down."

Kaito rubs his mouth in thought. "The situation is difficult, obviously. We're all dealing with multiple problems on multiple fronts. I don't want to see Turana or her people attacked, but they are in Outworld. That's your territory, Kotal Kahn, your jurisdiction. What you have said is not unreasonable, but it is unfortunate and I understand your reasons why. How would you like these terms delivered to her?"

"If not by my armies marching upon her city and shouted over her walls, then I would suggest a diplomatic envoy selected by this council."

"I'll go," Kaito volunteers himself. "I went there last time and I was the only one allowed inside, because of how she feels about me."

Mileena shifts in her seat, slightly but noticably.

Kotal seems to accept this. "If you will obtain for us the waters that we need, war will not be necessary. I will not go to Turana under the banner of peace after all that has been done until she and her masters recognize their place. The sooner they stop fighting my rule and accept that they must remain in Outworld, the better it will be for all."

"And if she will not give the water?" Kitana asks. "She may very well destroy it rather than let it fall into your hands through war."

The Emperor now looks at Cao while some of the others speak. "What say you, my son? Turana stole the water once before. What would you do in this position?"

The thief prince is a bit surprised as he is asked his opinion on the matter. He whispers, "Well, stealing water is hard, especially if there's a lot of it. But maybe it could be done with magic. If it were me... I would sneak into her city and use your Portal Stone, or something similar, and make a portal under the water, let it all drain out. Swipe it from right under her nose before anyone knew what was happening, and then they're in no position to do anything about it."

Kotal's eyes widen. He had not considered that...

That's a sneaky ace-in-the-hole plan for when diplomacy fails; I like it. Take their bargaining chip out from under them, and suddenly, they'll be a lot more complacent. Kotal turns back to the rest of the table as Kaito and Kitana finish talking about early plans to travel to Nemsai. Sub-Zero stands up. "This is all well and good, but we should turn our attention from the cure back to Noob Saibot. My family has been dealing with him for far too long, and now he has attacked us all."

Hanzo stands. "We should focus on the Deadly Alliance. Noob Saibot has been strategically cripled. Once we cure his plague, we must turn our attention to the enemies at our door."

Kuai Liang does not agree. "You speak more out of a desire for revenge against Quan Chi than you do for the good of the realms."

"Do not presume to think that you do not seek revenge against Noob Saibot!" Hanzo shoots back.

As more begin to join the argument, some urging calm while others attempt to back up either of their points, a smoke begins to rise from the center of the table. Kotal is one of the first to notice it, and he immediately stands and puts an arm in front of his children. This smog, purple and sickly green in color, rises and soon has everyone's attention.

A deep voice emerges from within. "My, my, what a grandiose gathering this is. A union between Earthrealm, Edenia and Outworld... but you failed to invite the new rulers of the Netherrealm."

The smoke clears as a spectral vision of none other than Quan Chi stands in the center of the table, green and see-through like water. He turns his gaze upon all present and smiles. "So many friends, all in once place..."

"Quan Chi! You dog!" Hanzo says. "You defile these grounds with your presence!"

"I was a guest here, once," he shrugs.

"In my dungeons!" Sindel replies. "To what do we owe the 'pleasure' of your visit, demon?"

"Your manners never fail to impress, your highness. I am here to merely deliver a friendly warning to all present: Noob Saibot, due to his foolish trust of the cleric Havik, has lost a key advantage and the Deadly Alliance will be there to pick up the slack. Already we have reclaimed more territory in the Netherrealm, including a very important area where I was able to use a tool I reclaimed from Shao Kahn's citadel in New York."

"What are you talking about now?" Kaito says. "You appeared in New York, and then fled!"

"Because I had what I needed. The Deadly Alliance is now stronger than ever, now that I have added three new members to my ranks... All of whom you should remember quite fondly."

Suddenly, the communicators of the New Defenders all ring, and guards rush in to whisper something to the king and queen. Quan Chi smiles. "Ah, there it is... right on schedule."

Kotal steps forth and takes out his ceremonial knife, ready to use it to enact blood magik. "Speak, sorcerer! What does this mean?"

"Ah, Emperor Kotal. One of my newest allies desires to speak to you directly."

The vision of Quan Chi changes as a new form emerges, one much larger, taking up the entirety of the room's spacious ceiling with his wingspan, darkening the hall. The visage of a familiar foe appears as Onaga, the Dragon King, lets loose a mighty roar. His burning eyes look upon Kotal Kahn and Cao with fury.

"You," he mutters. "You accursed usurpers! Did you think yourselves rid of me?! You merely sent me to the Netherrealm! I am the true ruler of Outworld, and I will return for my throne!"

Kotal is stunned, but Cao steps up and points at the dragon. "You tried it once before! Try it again and see what happens!"

The osh-tekk stands alongside him and holds the dagger aloft. "You were sent to the Netherrealm once before, and if you return it shall be the same! Now begone, worm!"

With a single slice across his palm, Kotal casts a spell as blood drips from his hand onto the table. Onaga breathes spectral fire as his vision is banished away, leaving all to stand silent as normal light returns to the room.

Kotal lowers his knife and bleeding hand. "The 'timing' that Quan Chi spoke of... What were you alerted to?"

Kaito holds up his communicator. "The New Defenders detected a breach in Edenia from the Netherrealm."

Sindel looks to Jerrod, who closes his eyes and shakes his head. "I'm afraid we are too late. We just received word from our scouts that the Deadly Alliance attacked our desert prison."

"What does that mean? Who were they seeking to free?" Sonya asks.

"Tanya," Sindel replies. "She and her family were kept hidden from all for the past twenty years. Now, they are free once more."

"We must move, then," Kaito says. "Can we stop them?"

Captain Shendu of the Edenian Knights steps forth. "The prison was hidden, but someone must have told them where to strike. They were fast, and now they are already gone."

Kotal's grip tightens. "A traitor revealed the location of this prison?"

"Or it was divined through some means I cannot know," Jerrod says.

"But that only makes two," Johnny says. "Cue ball just said he had three new friends. Onaga, Tanya, and who else? He couldn't have meant Noob Saibot, could he?"

"No, I think not," Sub-Zero replies. "Noob would not join them in less than twenty-four hours after his latest defeat. He must be referring to someone else."

"What of Kabal, and his Black Dragon warriors?" Sonya says. "We know they were using the Netherrealm as a hiding place, and they busted out Kano and Kira from prison."

"It could be," Sindel agrees.

Kaito rubs his forehead. "Man, I'm getting tired of bad guys coming back from the dead. Do we have, like, a magic mirror or a crystal ball or a Negative Zone what we can throw them in? Do we have any more Shinnok's Amulets lying around?"

Jerrod speaks now. "Our discussions were interrupted by Quan Chi, but we cannot allow this to distract us from our goals. I advocate that we immediately strengthen our opposition to the Deadly Alliance in the face of this latest revelation."

Hanzo could not be more in agreement. "The Shirai Ryu will lend all support to defeating them."

Sub-Zero is still hesitant. "I will have my clan focus on Noob Saibot and his Army of Darkness."

Next, Kaito folds his arms and says, "We'll try and commit our team to help both initiatives, but we also have to deal with Turana and Nemsai. We can't spread ourselves too thinly."

Kotal understands. "Then keep your team focused on the threat to the Netherrealm, and leave Turana and her city to me."

"I still wish to go and speak with her," Kaito says. "I will do so, but as myself, not as a representative of the New Defenders."

"Very well," Kotal replies. He turns to King Jerrod and Queen Sindel and says, "In the meantime, I hope you will not begrudge me to send my family back to Outworld, along with my First Minister." They give him leave to do so and Kotal steps outside the meeting hall with his family. He turns to Ruby and says, "Take my daughters back to the palace. I shall remain here with Cao to further discuss the situation, and then return."

Ruby bows. "Yes, my Emperor. I shall also give you a report on the plague when you return."

Kotal takes the Portal Stone and opens a door back to his palace, through which most of his retinue leaves through. He promises to little Hua that she will get more time in Edenia in the future.

Once the portal is sealed, Kotal turns back to Cao. The thief looks up at him and says, "Well, great. Onaga's back. I was hoping we wouldn't have to deal with him again, or at least not for a longer period of time. But what I don't get is why is he with Quan Chi?"

"Onaga would not do so unless Quan Chi had some means of controlling him. He brought Onaga back, rather than the other way around as it was before; this must mean that their previous relationship has shifted. If not equals, then certainly with Onaga on uneven ground with the sorcerer."

"I don't like it," Cao mutters. "Who is Tanya, anyway? I never met her."

"A traitor to Edenia. She and Rain both supported Shinnok in his invasion, and now it seems they both support Quan Chi's Deadly Alliance. Shiftless, with no moral integrity beyond what furthers herself. Rather than execute her and send her to hell, Queen Sindel instructed that she and her traitorous family be imprisoned in a hidden location, and for twenty years that plan worked. Until now."

Kotal spends the next few hours at the palace, even as the night draws on. He works out a plan with Kaito to give him enough time to go and speak with Turana. In the meantime, he will support a dual-initiative with the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu, lending his men to both, with a heavier focus on the Deadly Alliance. With figures like Goro, Motaro and especially Onaga among their ranks, it is a greater priority for the Emperor. In addition to this, the Special Forces will support the Shirai Ryu, and the Shaolin will lend warriors to the Lin Kuei. The forces of Edenia will remain at the ready, but not directly involved in the conflict; instead, they will be, like the New Defenders, ready to deploy to support either task force as necessary.

With this talk done, Princess Kitana has an announcement to make.

"I am aware that our council was interrupted by grave news, but..." She looks over at Liu Kang, who affirms his support. She smiles and turns back to the gathered warriors and friends and continues. "But Liu and I have decided to make an announcement. Though we face great threats, never let it be said that there is no light in the darkness, for I have agreed to take his hand in marriage."

Jerrod and Sindel look on with a smile as applause begins to fill the room. Many are pleased at the news, especially Mileena, who hugs her sister. Johnny Cage, in particular, gets up and moves to Kitana and Liu before throwing both of them into a hug. "Great news, guys! Great! And to think, it only took you twenty years!"

Liu coughs into his hand. "Yes, well... Edenian courtship rituals are---"

Kotal holds up a goblet and moves forward to congratulate them both, shaking their hands. As he passes by Mileena, he gives her a knowing wink, which she returns.

It seems the talks are well and over. Kotal parts with Cao, telling him to be ready; his 'idea' from earlier may yet need to be implemented.

He thanks the king and the queen for their hospitality, and says farewell to them and everyone else before leaving with the Portal Stone. He steps into his throne room, where Ruby, who is now changed back into her usual attire, stands ready to meet with him over a number of matters. At first he asks of his children, and is told they are well. Then it is onto business.

"During our absence, despite its briefness, a number of things occurred. We have successfully contained those afflicted with the plague and kept them from spreading further, but a number of them have died. In accordance with our current policy, the corpses of the fallen have been burnt, to prevent them from rising as wraiths."

"Good. Ensure that panic does not reach the people over this matter. Soon enough, we will have the cure in hand."

"But my Emperor, what if they do not part with the water willingly? War to retrieve it may take too long."

"Fret not, Ruby. I have a plan in mind. Move onto the next point."

"Yes, of course... I'm afraid that one of your osh-tekk noblemen was among the dead."

Kotal pauses as his ceremonial cloak is lifted from his shoulders. 'Mazatl is no more... That means Luliya is in charge of his estate.' He rubs his eyes, knowing that he is going to hear from his father about this.

"What else?"

"Something surprising, my Emperor. Our city gates were hailed by a minotaurian with a small group of her kind, asking for entry."

"When was this?"

"Only an hour ago. They have not been allowed entry, but she claims that she and her group are a splinter from Motaro's faction."

"I was not aware of any splinters among his people."

"This one claims to be so."

"Hmmm... What else?"

"Finally, an intruder in our dungeons was captured. She is currently being held in a cell."

"Who is she?"

"We know not; she says she will only speak with you, Emperor. But she was attempting to speak with Li Mei."

Kotal approaches his throne and sits upon it. "Curious... With this recent matter of Onaga returning, I do not think it could be a coincidence. Speaking of which, I want none of my retinue that was present for the meeting to speak of this news from Edenia---do not allow word of Onaga's return to spread among the city streets. There is already too much going on with this plague for them to fear this as well."

She bows. "I understand, my Emperor. Which issue would you like to attend to first?"

Kotal rests one elbow upon his throne's armrest and beckons with the other. "Bring forth this minotaurian to me. Escort her and her group through the streets, but only she will be brought forth to the throne room."

Ruby nods and sends for the guards. Within twenty minutes, as Ruby briefs the Emperor on other matters, the doors to the throne room open. Flanked by two of his warriors, a minotaurian enters, striding upon hooves that stamp upon the stone floor. Like the rest of her kind, she is not dainty, but tall, muscular and imposing in her own right. Even though the centaurs were cursed long ago by the shokan into losing their equine-like lower halves, they have not lost other qualities of their people.

Her forehead is dominated by a large set of black horns, that curl like those of a ram. The horns curl away from a mane of thick brown, pulled behind her head in a thick knot. She wears rough leather armor, almost resembling an apron, with a tool belt around her waist. Behind her sways a segmented, armored tail, a signature of her people, and in her thick-gloved hands is a hammer, the head of which she sets on the ground. It seems more like a war hammer than one for a forge, but it could serve both purposes.

Kotal observes her, noting that she seems well-traveled, with dirt and ash upon her cheeks. "Kneel before the Emperor," Ruby commands her. The tall woman looks at her, then at Kotal. She kneels and bows her head.

"Hail, Emperor. I am Tekalla."

Kotal is sufficiently pleased. "Rise. Why have you come to my city, and brought other minotaurians with you?"

"With respect, we prefer to be called satyrs. And I am here because we do not follow Motaro and his plans for our people."

Kotal leans forward. "How old are you, child?"

"I have survived twenty-three great cycles," she replies.

"You were too young to be part of the fighting when the shokan cursed your people. Too young to know what your people were once like. Motaro has always acted with the motivation to restore his people to their historic nature; you disagree?"

"Motaro has led our people to war, and war, and more war. He is not my chosen leader, nor do I care for his ambitions." She holds up an arm and stomps a hoof on the ground. "I am strong as I am, and I like what I am. He would have me and the others with me be ashamed and live in the past, as he is. His pride is all that matters to him, and revenge on the shokan. I care nothing for either."

"Then why are you here, truly?"

"I wish to live here, in your city. All of my people do; two dozen of us. We wish to remain as we are, and if needed, fight against Motaro and his people. We would be willing to trade information on him with you for safety."

Kotal sits back and looks at Ruby. While it is enticing, it could very well be a trap to allow these 'satyrs' free reign to settle here...

After considering her words for a few moments, Kotal lowers his hand. "Very well. I shall allow you and your people to remain in my city, but you must contribute a few things to me."

"We are prepared."

"Firstly, information regarding Motaro. Where is he now?"

"He left one morning not long ago, and returned to us changed; a centaur once more. He has promised that the same will be for all of his people who follow him, but I recognized where they were going. He has led our people to hell, and I do not mean ruin: the Netherrealm."

"I see... When did you and your group break away?"

"Not many nights ago. We were persued, but escaped fleeing south. I grew up in the mountains in the northwest, living in tunnels for most of my life."

"Very well. Next: I understand your people are great forgers, correct?"

She holds up her hammer and gloves. "It is my trade. I am a smith, like my father and his, and I have lived and worked in the forges in the mountains making weapons for my people since I was a faun. My arm is strong and my crafts are stronger!" Her tail, ending in a sharp blade, curls around that she may demonstrate it. "I have tired of providing my weapons to a war my people will not win."

"You will, instead, be permitted to sell them in my city, with a stipulation: you will provide one-fifth of your finished products to my guard at a discounted price. We will not demand them for free."

"It will be done. Thank you."

"And thirdly, there will be no trouble from your people. I know well the pride and rowdiness that your people can possess. My city is made up of many different peoples and creeds; you will start no violence in my streets, or else you will be swiftly dealt with."

"I understand, my Emperor."

"Very well. Be gone now."

She bows once more and leaves to return to her people. Ruby turns. "That was well negotiated, my Emperor."

"Her people's tail-weaponry are potent tools. They will come in handy in the future."

"Send for the prisoner."

Ruby bows and once more sends for the guards. They return moments later with a bound prisoner dressed in yellow with dark skin and long black hair. She is made to kneel in front of the Emperor, where she looks up. She is beautiful, as all edenians often are, and Kotal can see her heritage immediately.

Kotal's eyes narrow in recognition. "Nadia... Daughter of Natasha and Niece of Tanya."

"I'm surprised you remember me, Kotal Kahn."

"I know well your family. We once shared court."

"Until their actions saw me imprisoned."

"If memory serves, you were given time off from your sentence due to good behaviour. How curious that there was a break-in earlier this very day, freeing the remainder of your family, and you should appear in my dungeons..."

"You think me responsible or involved. I am not."

"Can you prove this?"

"I would be willing to do more than that," she says. "First and foremost, I have been in hiding since I was freed. I only return BECAUSE of the escape of my family."

"You claim no responsibility, and yet here you are, admitting that you have been hiding. An innocent soul has no reason to hide."

"Come now, Kotal Kahn. Surely even you know what shame is. I have hidden because my family is hated for their acts. I cannot so much as show my face in Edenia, even in my native lands. I want no part in my family's plots. But now I have an opportunity to clear my own name, and I intend to do so by helping you."

Kotal leans forward. "How, exactly?"

"My mother and aunt know not that I am here, nor that I seek to work against them. I will be welcomed back into their fold and from inside can feed you information."

He scratches his chin. "Then why were you in my dungeons, speaking with Li Mei?"

"She was a friend of mine, once. I wanted to see her, nothing more. She was in your dungeons, and I wanted to speak with you, so I killed two birds with one stone and allowed myself to be captured."

"You seem confident that you could have escaped my gaurd."

"I mean no offense, Kotal Kahn. But I could have, if I wanted to."

"Well then, speak while I am willing to listen. What do you get out of this offer to spy on your aunt?"

"Amnesty. I want protection and a clear name, and leave to live in Outworld instead of Edenia. Here, I could start anew, and distance myself from my family and their wretched reputation. And when this is over, I would hope to join your court, as a spy or otherwise."

Kotal lowers his hand back to the armrest. "You must understand that this is all quite convenient. Your true loyalty and allegiance has never been tested before now. Had you come to me prior to this situation, I would be more inclined to trust your word... but your word is all I have to do on at this moment."

She straightens and bows her head. "Then know this: I hate my family. I hate my traitorous blood, my traitorous aunt and my grandparents. Our house is plagued by them and their foul deeds, and I am forever cursed to be associated with them." She looks back up. "That is why I wish to do what I have spoken of. But had I joined your court earlier, my family would not take me back so quickly. It is for the exact reason that you do not trust me that they will."

Kotal tilts his head. "I see your point."

"Give me a chance, Emperor. I will swear to you, by blood magik if need be, that I will not betray you. I want to prove that there is one member of my family who can keep her word."

Kotal's fingers tap on his throne as he thinks. Ruby leans in and whispers, "If she were to make a blood contract, you would hold quite a bit of power over her..."

Kotal rises from his throne. "Whether you are lying or speaking the truth, we shall determine it later, and more privately than now. You shall be taken back to the dungeons, where we shall speak later."

Kotal turns to Ruby and says, "Send her to a cell near Li Mei's and have a guard posted, out of sight. See if she can get her to talk about Onaga."

Ruby nods. As she goes to speak with the guards, Kotal approaches Nadia. "Perhaps you are what you say you are. In which case, we cannot speak of any plans in the open. I shall meet with you later."

"Very well, Emperor. I look forward to it."

She bows her head as the guards come to take her away. Ruby appoaches the Emperor and asks, "The other matters then, Emperor?"

"No more for tonight. I leave the situation in your hand until morning. I expect an update on the plague when I awake." He feels fatigued and requires rest. His eyes are sore. There was much that happened today and a good night's sleep is just what he needs now. "I wish to meet with the girl, Luliya, tomorrow as well. She must be instructed on what it means to inherit her father's estate."

"Understood, Emperor. Goodnight."

Ruby bows as Kotal leaves for his chambers. As he walks, Kotal removes his helm and takes a deep breath. He is more sore than he let on up until now---despite a good day of food and company with friends, the toll from the Wraith-Plague is still clearly worn upon his body.

Still, much good happened today. The talks were needed in order to advance the efforts against his enemies. And he spent some time with his family, which his day-to-day affairs usually leave him little time for. He makes a mental note to try to make more time soon.

He enters his room, whereupon he discovers two dead guards, their heads punctured cleanly through. He nearly drops his helm as a figure drops in front of him.

"Greetings, Emperor."

"D'Vor---RAAAH!"

Two stingers shoot out and stab him in the chest as he says her name. Kotal shouts as two more emerge from her back and shoot out towards him, stabbing his arms. Kotal finds himself forced up against the wall as the assassin steps closer, lowering her hood.

"This One has a message from the Deadly Alliance," she whispers, her insect-like voice humming with anticipation. Her black eyes sparkly as she smiles a black smile. "They wish your death to be... painful."

Kotal's eyes widen as her mouth begins to split open at the cheeks!

Kotal's tattoos begin to burn red, along with his eyes, as he grabs the stingers in his arms. He questions not how she is here or how she is alive; all that matters is she must die again!

He tears them out as his blood comes to a boil. Kotal shouts and brings up a foot, kicking her backwards. D'Vorah's wings unfold from her back and she takes to the air, hovering over his bed for a moment before diving back at him.

>>713963

Kotal goes for a weapon, but one of her fast stingers shoots out from her back, stabbing his leg. This causes him to trip and crash into a drawer, smashing it in half.

The kytinn lands and reaches for him, holding him down. He shouts in pain as another stinger is shoved into his back, near his spine.

He feels a burning sensation as poison seeps throughout his body. The osh-tekk closes his eyes, grits his teeth and pushes against her.

>>714018

Knocked aside is his macuahuitl, but he reaches for it. D'Vorah sees this and twists her body to stomp on his hand. Her head turns to stare down at him with a malicious grin.

"Curse you..." he mutters.

"You feel the poison," she says, leaning down to whisper in his ear. "It will not kill, but prepare you. Soon, you will feel greater pains... and death will follow!"

>>714043

Now Kotal's tribal paint glows yellow. His arm shoots out to grab her leg.

"Feel the wrath of the sun!" he roars, his body burning with inner energy that he releases. D'Vorah screams as the light burns her body; the bedchamber is brightened as the kytinn flails madly, her wings beating to escape from him. Kotal finds himself free from her vile grasp as she soars to the opposite wall, where she perches like an insect.

Kotal rises, sword in hand. "I know not how you have come to be here, D'Vorah... but I shall send you and your traitorous hive back to hell!"

He charges at her as she regains her bearings and leaps back at him!

When they meet, Kotal smacks D'Vorah to the side, embedding his weapon in her left flank. She crashes into a mirror and hits the ground where she twitches.

Kotal stands, his breath heavy from the poison pumping in his veins. He takes out his knife and slices it across the palm, freeing some of the afflicted blood and gripping his hand tightly! His body glows as he shouts, using blood magik to purge the poison from his body. Green liquid seeps out of the wounds in his chest and arms as his strength slowly returns to him.

"I will not be so easily cowed!" he shouts, stepping over to her. He grabs her by the neck and hoists her upwards as insects begin to swarm around her wound. "You think you can ambush me, in my bedchamber?!"

He turns and throws her against the wall, cracking it slightly. The kytinn coughs up black blood as her swarm emerges to defend her. The bugs swarm up at him, distracting him for a moment as they remove the sword from her side.

With a burst of sunlight, Kotal burns away the annoying insects. D'Vorah rises from the ground and leaps at him, stingers at the ready!

Kotal still has his dagger. He impales her upon it as she jumps at him, making her land on it. He buries it between her breasts, digging into the hard chitin of her skin. Her face contorts in pain as he twists on it.

He leans in close to her. "I have a message for the Deadly Alliance as well: send better assassins!"

>>714307
>>714362

D'Vorah's black eyes shoot open as she opens her mouth. An insect crawls up from her throat, a disgusting-looking grub, which opens its mouth. A spike shoots out of its mouth, aimed right at his throat.

Kotal's eyes go wide as he feels it enter his neck. He lets go of D'Vorah and gasps as he clutches his bleeding throat, suddenly finding it difficult to breathe.

The kytinn falls back as Kotal knocks over a nightstand. The doors to the chamber burst open as two guards rush in, armed with spears. D'Vorah turns and slices both of their throats open, killing them in moments.

Ruby is behind them. "Emperor!"

Without missing a beat, she leaps into the air and kicks D'Vorah's head, knocking her towards the window. She then reaches to her belt and takes out a potion, throwing it at her feet. The oily substance ignites upon contact with the air when the bottle shatters, setting the floor in front of her on fire.

The kytinn screams at the sight of flames and leaps out the window, taking flight as she does.

More guards rush in as Ruby tends to Kotal. "See to the royal family! Protect them!" she orders. Kotal coughs up blood as she begins to work on his wounds, focusing on his neck. "Send for my potions! Get them up here, now!"

She cradles his head in her lap. "Worry not, Emperor, I can save you, I can save you..."

Kotal's eyes flutter closed. He feels the poison pumping through him, but now he cannot perform a ritual to expunge it from his body.

As it reaches his brain, all he knows is sleep...

"It is the only available option," Ruby says.

"I will not allow it!" Shukojin says, slamming a meaty fist upon the table. "You will stand in the Emperor's place, Ruby. You are his First Minister!"

"I am not the Emperor, nor his heir," she replies. She looks around the table at the gathered council. "Outworld is ruled by the Kahn, not the Kahn's First Minister. You would do well to remember that these positions we all sit in are easily replaced."

Nemir Rajah shakes his head. "The boy isn't ready."

"That's why we will do as we are needed to do, and council him," Ruby says. "Kotal Kahn is asleep, but it will not be for long. Until I can cure the strange venom in his brain, we must have someone sit on the throne."

"Then have it be the girl," Hachiman offers. "She is at least smarter. Even the young one is smarter."

"They are not the chosen next in line. Kotal Kahn was specific, to all of us, who the heir is. I am aware that he has not been prepared, but it is the only choice available to us, by the law of the Kahn alone."

Rajah leans forward. "But he is assigned to a team in another realm."

Ruby responds very plainly, "He will return for this."

Erron Black leans against a nearby wall. "It doesn't really matter, does it? Kotal Kahn is out cold, and until he gets warm, so long as someone sits in the seat it doesn't matter who it is. He's not dead, that's the important thing."

"We have too much going on!" Shukojin reminds him. "The plague! The war! Sending our forces into the Netherrealm!"

"He knows nothing of trade or of rule," Rajah says.

Just then, the person they are all speaking about enters the room. They all grow silent as he walks up to his seat and takes it---that seat being Kotal Kahn's usually. But now it is occupied by his heir.

Cao takes a bite of fruit and wipes his lips. He pauses when he sees everyone staring at him.

"Oh, don't mind me. Please, continue."

That's all for this weekend, folks. I hope you enjoyed this episode! It was slower than usual, I feel, with all the politics and meetings and such, but we got a little bit of action in the end.

Now, Cao must sit temporarily upon the throne while Kotal recovers from his assassination attempt. Furthermore, the final three members of the Deadly Alliance are revealed!

How did you like this episode?

I'll make the vote for the next character shortly.

>>
>>714587
So where's the character vote?
>>
What do you want for the next episode?

>Cao Kahnzedah
Now forced to step into the role of Emperor, Cao must grapple with the problems it brings, especially when new people begin to force their way into his life.

>Akayama Kaito
With the orb in hand, Kaito must now venture back to the Edenian sea and team up with Ryan as they break reality (just a little bit) and get revenge on Aegis.

>Takahashi Takeda
With all that's going on at the New Defenders base, it's hard for a guy to catch some time to relax, and that's just what Takeda is trying to do---but who will he spend it with?

>Tundra
Sub-Zero brings the Dragon Medallion to the New Defenders base in order to help test it out with the younger members on the team to see where they powers can truly take them in their training, along with some eggs that Tundra is tasked with hatching.

>Fireseed
During his travels to the Netherrealm, Fireseed led Team Striker. There, they encountered a dark foe, one that Fireseed has seen before---and it isn't Noob Saibot. Now he must speak to someone he hasn't seen in a long time about this new threat.
