You are Mii the Harpy, formerly Samantha Smith the teenage girl, not too long ago you were once an average overweight girl living an average overweight life, before that all came crashing down. Quite literally in fact, onto a boulder, it was probably pretty messy, not that you really need to worry about that anymore as you were reborn in another world as a little baby harpy. So far, with your mother, father, brother and especially your sisters you have had many an adventure. Exploring the family tree, trekking through the forest, visiting the local town of Treebreak, and even going on a hunt with your mother and sisters. It’s been fantastic!

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, Sammy, why are you currently sitting in a pile of downy white feathers inside the safety of the home nest? Weren’t you last flying a deceased volcanic badger out of a raging inferno, that you by no means caused by the way, to go deliver it to your mother and receive her approval? As you sit here looking back with your slightly singed feathers and sooty and blood caked face, did you expect things to go differently? After all, this was a big moment, a kill of something of that caliber? Surely you should have received glorification by your parent, not being forced to sit in time out, no matter how warm and cozy it is…

It’s not like you got seriously hurt during the hunt, so why did you need to hear that lecture on the flight back about getting into dangerous situations? And why did Ciel get praise for coming to “save” you and Mai? You were the one who did most of the work in that fight, even if her rock helped stop the barrage… and she is the older sibling… and… Never mind that. You’re still upset. This was supposed to be your time to prove how tough you are and instead you got punished for it, this sucks!

Now mom and dad are talking away in the other room no doubt, your two sisters scattered through the nest, and who knows where your brother is. Probably still sleeping near dad if he is anything like you were at that many days, or climbing the tree to freedom…

In any case, here you are Mii, stuck back where you always are, in your room, in time out. What are you going to do?

Fuck it, you’ve had enough for the day. If that’s how everyone wants to be fine. You hunker down into the pile of white, fluffy feathers, your own wings covering your sides as you rest your head down, upon the down covering the stick and mud floor of the nest. You’ll just sulk here, you’ve had enough, every time you try to go above and beyond today it’s just blown up in your face. First there was the whole thing about you telling your family that you were reborn and they didn’t believe any of it, and now when you successfully do your first hunt, you get put in time out?! Life is just so unfair, it doesn’t matter if it is in one reality or another.

With a pout on your face you sulk, mulling these thoughts over in your mind, about how unfairly you are being treated, and how much Mom and Dad suck for making it so you can’t throw yourself headfirst into life here in this world. The forest itself is quiet today, the wind rustles through the quiet canopy, as the afternoon sun lazily makes its way towards its destination, the soft breeze tickling your nose as it gently caresses you, shifting a few feathers from the pile to float and dance across the nest floor, before settling in a corner. You give a heavy sigh, and tap your toes on the floor as you wait… and sulk… and wait…

Eventually, you hear someone approaching, by tilting you head just a bit and shifting your gaze slowly you are able to make out the entry way to the ‘room’ you are in and notice slightly ruffled brown feathers, wavy brown hair, and a curious expression upon the tan face of none other than your traitorous older sister, Ciel! She looks at you, then back into the ‘hall’ then back to you, then gives a look of contemplation, like a person who sees someone else playing a Nintendo D.S. but doesn’t want to go over and appear strange but really wants to know how far the person has progressed in the game they are playing…

“Hey, little sis.” She finally says with a tentative step towards you. “Can… can we talk a bit?”
You grumble and look away from her as you contemplate what to do.

>Snub the traitor, she took the glory.
>Hear her out, she did kind of save you and Mai.

>>
>>707067
You give another sigh and glance back her way. “What do you want, Ciel?” You ask her, with a glare from your little pile of fluff and ruffled feathers.

This seems to cause another moment of hesitation in your older sister, who ruffles up her own brown feathers, the wind brushing them up just enough for you to see the underside of a few. And it is with a great effort that you see her finally come to her words.

“Earlier, before we went out on the hunt there was that time when you and Mai were talking about what you remember from your genetic memories and you said that you remembered all this cool stuff like rumble boxes and electric carriages and I don’t know where you know it from but it sounds really neat so I know you probably don’t feel like talking about it because I know it must be a tough topic and you know what this was stupid just forget I ever asked okay?”
She spits out in rapid succession, you can see her lungs squeezing out that last bit of air as she rambles and then goes to turn for the exit once again, turning tailfeathers.

I'm not sure where she was going with that, so I'm curious. Could be she just wants to hear stories? Regardless, she's our sister, and no reason any sister of ours should lack in self-confidence! If she has something she wants to ask, she should ask it.

“Wait, Wait, Wait. Big Sis.” You call out from the comfort of your pile of down that surrounds you.
She comes to a halt in her hasty tracks, snapping a few twigs under talon as she does so.
“Yes? Little sister?” She questions in return, it seems to have a strange dual undertone of hope and at the same time nervousness.
“Explain-” You begin to say back to her before she whips around with an almost child like happiness upon her expression, well given she is actual a child, unlike you who is a teen in a young body that’s understandable.
“Well, you see, my genetic memory has all these things like whirligigs and thingamabobs and shiny doodads that we harpies make, and I was hoping that if you told me more about what the humans make I could put my smarts to work with what you have and then maybe I could come up with whole new ideas. Your stories sounded really interesting too, like you have actual memories of it instead of just well, thoughts and such on things you already kinda know.”
She says, her brown hair and feathers bobbing up and down as she bounces in place in front of you, it’d probably be a lot cuter if she didn’t tower over you from this perspective.

If she knows where we could get our talons on some magnets and some metal wire, we could rig up a basic battery for electric experiments. But that might be rough.

We could talk a bit about radio transmissions, sending sound and other information through energy that we can't see. Sam / Mii probably won't know anything details about them, but just the ideas might be interesting to Ciel.

You try to hold it back, but you can’t help but feel some pride. Finally, finally someone believes you, even if it isn’t one hundred percent, it’s a start. And that gets you all kinds of ready to talk. You rear up from the pile of feathers, sitting proud and shaking off your prison of white softness to reveal your glorious gray plumage.

“Alright Sis, I can’t say no to you. After all, what are sisters for if not to be there for one another. Now, come on, come on Sis, sit down and I’ll tell you all about it.”

Ciel smiles brightly at your words, her wings trembling with excitement. She takes quick steps back to you before nestling down on her legs into a seated position on the floor. She is bright eyed and eager to learn it seems.

“Alright now where to begin… something easy. Alright, ah, there are certain metals, iron works, and certain pieces of it have this attractive property to other types of metal. Where they want to stick together because of really powerful forces.” You begin, trying to explain magnetism, and Ciel bops her head along absorbing the information like a sponge.

“So certain types of metal are magic?” She questions you, with a raised wing.

“No, no, its not magic. Its science. Look, so you know lightning and light and stuff, well all of that happens because of these really tiny particles and some of them are a plus and they like to stick to minuses and when a bunch of minuses get energy they get rid of it all at once and… umm… er…” You keep trying to find the right words, but it seems that your thoughts are having trouble transferring over, much like you did before when you tried explaining. Perhaps only simple terms will work…

Ciel just tilts her head and waits, she seems to notice a loose feather in her wing however, and goes to try and pluck that while you struggle with your words.

“So, there are little things, that effect big things, and I know we seem like little things, but these things are waaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller.” You emphasize this by spreading your wings wide to explain big things and then shrinking the distance to the point of touching for small things.
“And these little things make up everything, and they got all these positive and negative things in ‘em. And when these things are out of balance they start to stick together and make other things, but sometimes these things behave in other ways like making metal stick to metal, or causing light, and heat, and fire. But it’s not done by magic there’s really specific things that go into them. So, if you can find some metal like that I can show you some neat stuff.”

“Okay sister, but where am I supposed to find metal like that?”
“Well, it shouldn’t be that rare, if we check the town they may have some, and if not there’s always the hills and mountains.”
Ciel nods her understanding and waits for you to continue.
1/2
>>
>>707975
“And I told you about the communal housing.” You wince a bit as you once again fail to say apartment.
Your sister gives a nod in agreement.
“Well, there were some of places like those that housed, hundreds, maybe even a thousand humans, all over. And there were other places too, buildings taller than this tree, taller than a hundred of this tree even.”
Ciel’s face turns to one of disbelief and astonishment, after all, nothing is taller than these trees, except maybe the mountains in the far off distance, but to hear of a building that is the size of a hundred trees, it baffles the imagination.
You can’t help but grin at the expression she gives, it’s like telling a little kid some kind of fantastical tale of dragons and heroes and, oh wait you are living that now…

“Oh, Oh, but before I forget about little things, I almost forgot, there are these little animals inside of everyone, and on everything and that’s what makes people sick.”
“You’re making that up.” Ciel retorts, it seems that one is just too absurd for her.
“No, no, its true. That’s why we need to clean ourselves when we can. Like preening and taking baths, and making sure nothing rots.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s because of the bad taste and smells.”
“No, its because of the animals, trust me.”
“Oookay sis…”
You aren’t sure if that one stuck…

“Well, there is one thing I might be able to show you though, if we can get back to Treebreak.” You say, a thought suddenly coming to your mind.
“Oh, and what is that sis?” Ciel questions.
“I saw a mill there with a water wheel, if we can do some stuff with it, I can show you all kinds of neat things.”
“Well if you think so Sis…” Ciel says as she finally rises to her feet.
“Hey, where are you going?” You ask from your spot across from her.
“I need to go think, you gave me a lot of things to think about, even if I don’t get all of it right now…” She says as she plods her way towards the entryway.
“But I still have more to talk about.” You say, having finally gotten really into it.
“And we will sis,” Ciel says with a chuckle, “But I can only think about so much at once, and besides, its not like we’re going anywhere anytime soon.”

And with that, she heads back out into the nest proper, leaving you to your isolation. The sun hangs low in the sky, it is already starting to get dark, wait, is mom really going to send you to bed without dinner…

What, Ciel? Why would we? What did she do wrong? Sure, Mom got the wrong idea about what happened, but that's not Ciel's fault. She came to assist us after she heard the distress call, even when she thought we should all run away.

You’ve had just about enough of today, it’s been a long and hard day and right now you are far more tired than you are hungry.
You decide that you might as well just go to bed now, and you make your way back to the fluffy, downy, and white feather pile that you will be using for a bed. You shift and shuffle in it, pressing the warm feathers to your body as you settle down, by ducking your face under your wing you are able to cut out the afternoon light and get just enough darkness for your brain to start slipping and drifting towards the real of dreams.
A few rays of light stave off your advance towards slumber, and for a brief moment you wonders what you shall be dreaming of this night.

As you slip into your dream you feel something tug and pull and then all at once it envelops you, dragging your consciousness to a new space. The space is both totally dark and totally bright at the same time, yet it is without all, shapes, time, movement, anything. It is radiant and aglow but from no particular source. It is dark but there is nothing to cause darkness. Yet somehow you can feel it, everything that ever is, was, or will be is here, yet there is nothing here at all. It is everything and nothing, yet you can feel it pulsing and shimmering around you, the sensation of energy winking on and off, in and out of this… void. It is comfortable enough, so within its crammed nothingness. In this space you stay, light and dark winking in and out of the existence, or nonexistence that surrounds your being…
Then, there is a shift, darkness rolls through the void, like a great shadow passing over all that is, instinctively you go to duck or move, but nothing changes, here there is no movement, nothing to shift or change, yet, the shadows coalesce before you into a familiar shape, that of a bird, black as pitch yet radiating an ethereal light from within and without.
“Found you at last, good for a moment I figured it had failed.”
The voice has no gender, yet is both a booming yell and a quiet whisper, like a choir of a thousand is speaking all at once. You open your mouth to reply, yet nothing comes out, your mind racing with questions and concerns.

No one would believe us should we choose to ask about this during the day...

“Straight to the point, aren’t we? Well that is indeed a question…”
The shadow ‘speaks’ to you, having read your very thoughts. Reality pulsing around it as its words emanate through the void.

You can feel pressure emanating from it, like a billion gravities crushing you, and yet at the same time, it seems to raise you up against the power, holding your very existence in a vice. Light and dark flicker slower near the being as it shifts slowly in place, if it had eyes it is clearly looking in your direction.

“Right now I have taken you to my abode, so that we may discuss in private. After all who would I be if I just left you to fend on your own without a sense of direction? Flapping around like a hatchling in the darkness?

The shadow spreads its wings and they seem to cover all of the realm of light and dark, blotting out all that is and ever will be from view.
“Let us begin not too long ago then, Samantha, you faced a rather unfortunate happenstance, and were brought back. Right now we are simply going over something I should have with you already.”

Thats all for now, I know it was a bit of a tease, but I wanted to make sure the thread had a proper 'ending'. Sorry for the huge hiatus, I'll be sure to be around more often through the holidays. Feel free to stick around and ask questions.
