/qst/ - Quests

In the late seventies through the early nineties, drug violence in South America only continued to escalate. A successful revolution by the IRA in Ireland encouraged similar revolts in central Africa, and a USSR faction in Russia. Human trafficking for both the organ and the sex trades exploded between south-east Asia and eastern Europe. In the face of such chaos, government run militaries and agencies were too caught up in red tape to be effective in combatting these threats. Nations abdicated their throne as world super-powers, and turned it over to the world of private military contractors.

Thirty years later, the private military industry is a widely accepted fact of life, a necessary evil for the security of the world. While many people in the civilized world resent these men for what they represent, they are also aware that they need them, lest the world fall into the hellscape that it was once again.

You are Jan Kowalski, a Polish special forces operator turned private military contractor. In return for cash and other liquid currency, you, and men like you go places national militaries can’t, and that local police forces won’t.

Last time, on Contractor Quest: You choppered into Bogota, didn’t shoot anyone, looted a mansion of it’s wealth and dog, got a little philosophic with your teammates, spent a short work day in the kill house, finally cracked open a safe, and talked to a few teammates again.
>>
It’s about 2 pm, and you hadn’t expected the mess to be so busy. Looking around, you notice not many contractors like yourself sitting at the tables. It seems to be mostly administration staff, custodians, armorers and the like. Support personnel. A few turn their heads to look at you, make a confused face at Casimir following you, and go back to their conversations.

You get your food from the line, and turn. The place didn’t look as full from this angle, and you could see a few empty tables near the wall. Or, there were a few tables with empty spaces. One looked like a group of handlers, the folks who give out missions to their dedicated mercs. They seem like they’re talking about their charges and the options that can be given to them. You recognize a few armorers at one table, likely talking about firearms and other tools of the trade. There is also what seems to be a mixed crew of custodians and kitchen staff, just chatting aimlessly.

Where would you like to sit?

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I'll go and herd them over here. Post is almost ready
>>
You decide the armorers are the least likely to be afraid of you. You motion towards the empty spot, and they wave you over. As you take your seat, you all exchange the standard pleasantries.

“Kowalski?”, a heavy set, bearded one asks. “You’re new, aren’t you? I doubt you have any decent gear then, huh?”

You shrug. “Not really, I guess. Just the weapons they gave me to start out with. The signing bonus, or whatever they call it. Pretty bare bones stuff.”

They all nod in understanding. “Well, hey, if you’re wanting some better stuff, there’s a gun show in town tomorrow, caters specifically to contractors and companies. You’ll get a better deal than you would here or in some gun shop if you wanna look around for new toys. They’ll have everything you could need. Guns, optics, accessories, knives, all that stuff. You should check it out if you have the time.”

You thank them as you clear up your plate and head out of the mess hall. It’s still only about 2:30 pm, and your meal has got you feeling a lot more energized than you did a few hours ago. What to do, what to do.

Calling for Arne, writing now.
>>
You decide you should look for Arne before he drags himself away from that library. Making a quick pit-stop at home to drop off Casimir, you pull up the directions on your phone and start the drive over.

Stepping into the library, you ask a receptionist where you can find ‘the giant swedish guy’, and she points you in his direction.

As you round a corner, you see him, reading a new book.

“Hey man, I got yo-”

“Dude, shut up. You’re in a library.” he whispers harshly.

“Okay, fine,” you whisper back. “I got that safe open. Here’s your share. How’s the new book?”

“Thanks,” he says, taking the bundle of cash from your hand. “Not liking this one so much, but that’s how it goes sometimes. You get the other guys their shares yet?”

“Everyone but Harris,” you reply. “I can’t seem to find him anywhere.”

“Yeah, he does that sometimes. He might be out of town visiting Melanie. I got a guy interested in those paintings, but he wants to see them in person and can’t get to Atlanta for a few weeks yet. I’ll let you know when they sell.”

You thank Arne, and get back in your car. It’s about 4, and you’re starting to get a little tired. You have a few options on what you can do.

Hey when we get the chance we should take Casimir over to a K9 trainer on base, see if he could make the cut for it
>>
>>72802
Impact! Solutions doesn't usually do K9, but the admin offices would probably be a good place to get a start on where would be a good place to get that done

Post almost up
>>
You haven’t been to the on-base bar yet, so you figure now’s as good a time as any to try it out. You drive to the Impact! Headquarters, and walk through the building into the addition that has been turned into a bar.

You walk in, and see Solomon Hyun sitting at one table, chatting with a man and a woman. He doesn’t seem to have noticed you. There are a few empty tables around, or a few open places at the bar, where a handful of other contractors and various support staff are sitting.

As you consider your options, your eyes look past the bar. It may very well be the greatest thing your eastern-european eyes have ever seen. You know your grandfather would be shedding a tear at this sight, bless his soul. Any and all types of liquor, beer, and wine, neatly arranged in a shelving unit so tall, the bartender has one of those rolling ladders you find in old-timey libraries.

You finally manage to look away from the glory before you, and consider your options

Where are you sitting?

You walk up to the bar, and pull up a stool with some of the support staff. They give the usual greetings, except for one rail-thin purple haired lady with more than a handful of facial piercings. She just glares at you.

American vodka generally tastes like window cleaner and broken glass, which is the right way to make it, according to Grandpa Aleksy. You order a pair of shots for that to start, and turn to some the administrative staff next to you.

“So, I may have… Acquired. A dog on my last mission. He follows orders to the letter already, and isn’t afraid of gunfire. Is there anywhere around I could get him combat trained?”

A young man in glasses and a loosened tie answers you. “The company doesn’t have a dog trainer on site, but the usual policy is to split specialized trainer costs fifty/fifty with the operative requesting. If you want, come up to HR tomorrow, and we can fill out all the paperwork you’d need.”

You buy the guy a beer for his trouble, and notice the purple-haired lady still glaring at you. You feel like you should know her from somewhere.

>Can I fucking help you, ma’am?

And for the last time the paternity test came back negtive
>>
You finally lock eyes with the woman.

“Do I know you, or something?”

She doesn’t blink. It’s weird. “Apparently, you fucking don’t. When your plane lands at Impact! After a combat mission, you are supposed to head DIRECTLY to my office. Does killing a dozen locals and having a team member wounded count as combat? I sure as shit count it as combat. So, what you are meant to do is come to my office for debriefing. But you didn’t. You went out and did who the fuck even knows what. So now, I have all sorts of paperwork and shit to do, and legal is breathing down my neck to make sure you didn’t pop a screw loose. So no, I guess you don’t know me.”

Aw, fuck. You do know her. This is Tiffany Murdock, your personal HR rep. She gets you your missions, debriefs you after them, and generally deals with clients for you. Your contract technically states that if you fire a round during a mission, you’re supposed to report it to her.

>Do I look like I need a babysitter? I’m a professional, ma’am, not some rent-a-guard who got handed a pistol

“Oh, hell. I’m sorry, Tiffany. I totally spaced that. Is that something we can do now, or should I come in tomorrow morning?”

She finishes her drink. “The system shuts down at five, so come in first thing tomorrow morning. 8 am, sharp. I’ll be waiting. We can do pretty much everything we need to then. Debrief you for Bogota, have you pick out a new mission, and finish up your general background shit that we’re supposed to supply to clients before they hire you on. And, Jan, I swear to God, if you aren’t there, I’m driving over and dragging you in myself. I have your address.”

She gets up and leaves, paying the bartender on the way out.

You turn to the man who spoke to you about the canine trainer.

“Is she always like that? I’ve only ever dealt with her though email or on the phone.”

“Kinda,” he replies. “She’s kinda new, and the rest of us think she’s kinda faking it until you and the other operatives respect her enough. Most of the handlers have to be a little bit of a badass, or the contractors don't really listen to them.”

That made sense, you suppose. So, now what? You finished your two drinks, and if you have much more you probably won’t be driving home. Still though, you could get a cab, or stay in the temporary barracks on the base.

>What will Jan order?

You chat for a while to get to know them, and find out that Harris left for Virginia not long after you landed for a few days to spend with his daughter. They weren’t quite sure when he was getting back.

These guys, like most of Impact! Are American, and served in one branch or another of the US military for a while before going private. They seem pretty interested in the Polish special forces, so you tell them a little bit about it, and learn some of the inner workings of the Army Rangers in return. Apparently, two of these guys came from the same unit, and knew each other pretty well.

You order some polish mead from the bartender, who scratches his head and checks a small catalogue behind the bar. He disappears back into the walk-in cooler, and reappears with your drink. Your new friends pay him, and return to talking.

“So, what can I do about training around here? The orientation said there were instructors, but I haven’t seen any around.”

“They have some on site,” one of the rangers answers. “You gotta set up appointments, though. They don’t just hang around. There’s some old SEAL who does most of the rifle and pistol courses, and will occasionally do stealth entry. A Marine Corps gunnery sergeant does all the heavy weapons like rocket launchers and machine guns, and they have some SWAT instructor that does shotgun and SMG courses. They also have a former UFC heavyweight that teaches hand-to-hand and stuff like that. Knives, tomahawks, wrestling, et cetera. They’ll also bring in someone and cover half the cost if you want something more specific or specialized. I think that’s all of them, though. The docs in the medical wing would probably teach you field medicine, if they have time, but that’s not an official thing.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that. How do I set up an appointment,” you ask in return.

“Just ask your HR rep, they’ll take care of it for you,” another answers.

You nod and thank them, and wonder what to do with your time now. It’s about 6:30, and if you have another drink you’ll be staying on base for the night. Momma Kowalski didn’t raise no drunk-driving fool.

Thanking the Americans for their time and the drink, and giving the bartender a tip, you make your way through the building and back to your car. Stepping outside, you feel like the fresh air sobers you up a little. Climbing into the car, you start the drive home, and pull into your garage about half an hour later. Looks like Charlie and his girlfriend are home.

Walking in, you find Charlie pulling some food out of the freezer.

“Oh, hey man. I was just about to throw some steaks on the grill for me and Ivoeta. You want one?”

>Sure man, a steak sounds awesome

>>
“I appreciate it, but I’m in trouble at work, so I should be on my best behavior for tomorrow.”

Charlie seems worried. “What… what kind of trouble does someone in your line of work get into?” he asks nervously.

“Nothing serious, I just didn’t go talk to my HR rep when I was supposed to. Meeting her first thing in the morning, so I should get some sleep. Goodnight, Charlie. Tell Ivoeta hi for me.”

“Will do, man. Goodnight.”

As you climb into bed, Casimir climbs in with you, ready to get some sleep. The alcohol does wonders, and you’re out just about as soon as you hit that pillow.

Your alarm is going off, and you angrily cancel it. You need to be at Tiffany’s door at 8 am, in an hour and a half. You should get ready.

Showered, shaved, and dressed, you pull up in front of the Impact! Solutions headquarter building, and make your way to the administrative wing, knocking on Tiffany’s door at 7:56 am. She tells you to come in, and you enter, taking a seat across from her surprisingly neat desk.

“So, what are we starting with,” you ask, wanting to get this going.

“Well,” she starts, “basicaly, I need to debrief you on your combat mission. From there, we’ll select your next mission, and then finish up the back ground we give to clients before they accept and hire you.”

She then begins to ask you a series of asinine questions that both of you obviously know the answer to, basically making sure you didn’t go nuts seeing combat. Its pretty long and needless, and by the end of it, both of you are pretty bored.

Thankfully, it ends after about half an hour of asking the same four questions in different ways. She then hands you a clipboard, half filled out from the hiring process.

“Fill this out. Legal made us start doing this so that we don’t get sued over ‘emotional distress’ when someone hires a father of three and gets him killed. Now, they know damn well what they’re getting into when we give them this. So, fill it out, please, and we’ll get to mission selection when you’re done.”

“Hey, before I forget, I got a dog. Can we get someone here to get him combat trained?”

She thinks for a moment. “I’ll look into it and make a few emails while you fill that out. We’ll talk after.”

Looks like the clipboard just wants some basic background information on you. Nothing terribly in-depth or personal.

“Let’s do Jakarta,” you say. Something about human smuggling you just can’t turn down.

“Sounds good. Plane leaves from here in three days. Go shopping, do some training, get some rest, whatever you want to do. So far you’re the fourth guy to sign up, so there might be one more, but after that the money gets to be too small, so they usually don’t do six unless it’s a huge pay off” she says.

“And… Hey. I’m sorry about snapping at you last night. It was unprofessional, and I should have known better.”

“Don’t worry about it. I should have come in anyways. Thanks, Tiffany, I’ll be seeing you around.”

On your way out the door, you have a thought. “Say, could I schedule a training session? I’ve been getting a little rusty on my pistol skills, and I really need to work on the submachine gun shooting.”

She slaps the keyboard a few times and reads through something. “Gary is full today, but I can get you in tomorrow afternoon for the pistol, and the next morning with Phil for the SMGs. Sound good?”

“Yeah, that’ll work fine. Thanks, Tiffany. Bye”

You decide to head to the range for a few hours. You grab your rifle from your locker, and your pistol was already in your bag. You grab an MP5 from the small range armory, and get to work.

You kill so many paper and steel targets, you’re probably genocidal. You feel like your skills are up to snuff, now, and that you’re gonna get the most out of your training with the instructors. You check your phone, and the time is about 1 pm. The gun show is going to start by the time you get there, and you’ve probably got the cash to make your trip worth it. On the other hand, it isn’t going to end until well after dark, so if you want to do something else with you time, you certainly can.

You’d better head over before all the good deals get taken. Throwing the address into your phone, you drive yourself over to some rec center where the show is going on. You flash you Impact! Operative ID to get in free of charge, walk past all the tables selling manufacturer t-shirts, right-wing bumper stickers, and cheap hunting rifles.

There’s a large man in a shirt that reads ‘SECURITY’ standing next to an unassuming door. He steps in front of it as you approach, but you show him the same ID that you used to get in. He steps back to his original spot, and motions towards the door.

This is where the good stuff is. Tactical armor. Full-auto firearms. Is that a fifty cal back there? Oh, you bet your sweet polish balls it is. Since we're getting SMG training, we should probably get the MP5, yeah?

Also, I don't think one of the newer AK's will dramatically give us better accuracy or reliability than our current G36.
So maybe just get attachments instead.
And the improved outfit and a helmet will probably be good.

Should we get a shotgun, considering where we're going to be fighting? Or will the MP5 be enough?
>>
Rolled 86 (1d100)

>6,200 USD
does that include Harris cut of the booty, or did you subtract it already?
>>
>>74402
That's your cash. The other guys' money was it's own inventory slot. It was never factored into your personal money
>>
Improved tactical outfit
New-prodution AK model only if the has less configuration options than the G36
RDS
the trusty Remington 870 Tactical, pump action 12ga
Foregrip
2 Nades
less than 3k

>>74393
MP5 sounds great, city fight!
+ suppressors! For pistol and rifle, so we can snipe them all.
+ Pistol holographic sight. More hitting, less missing.
+ Improved tactical outfit. More ammo!
+ Tactical Helmet. More armor.
Buying spree.

Any better than our G36? What we have works. Keep some bribing money just in case?
>>
>>74333
Okay folks, looks like we're pretty set on the MP5 and the shotgun. It should be noted you can only carry one long gun (everything but pistols) and one pistol into combat.

Other than that, just a few quick options
2 grenades
RDS for long-gun
Suppressor for long-gun and pistol
Tactical AK
Holo sight for pistol
Fore grip

What do you guys want?
>>
>>74518
+Red dot sight for our G36
>What do you guys want?
Everything. :)
>>
>>74518
>RDS for long-gun
For the G36

I don't want to switch up our long gun prior to a difficult mission, we would need a bit more time to get used to it
>>
>>74518
Ak
the nades
Suppressor and RDS
>>
>>74460
>only if the has less configuration options than the G36
Why would you want the AK only if it has less options than the G36?
>>
>>74589
fuck this k/b i meant the countrary
only if the g36 has less customization options
>>
Alright. Buying MP5 (2000) 870 (900) RDS for long-gun (600) 2 frag grenades (300) and a rifle supressor (400) for a grand total of 4,200 dollars. You have 5 minutes for objections or additions. Feel free to tell me if I fucked up, I"m having a little trouble following this
>>
>>74598
G36 has many mods. No idea whether it has more than an AK or not, though
>>
>>74611
G36 can do both an optic and a forward attachment like a bayonet or foregrip
>>
>>74608
Great! Looks correct.

Grab the Improved Tactical Outfit and Helmet at least.

>>
>>74644
Yes, armor! Don't want to end up like our comrade Miller.
>>
>>74650

just didn't notice that rule, I guess. Or just because.
>>
Are we ditching the shotgun? It's not like it disappears after this mission. You keep guns unless you sell them or lose them on a mission.
>>
>>74608
>>74629
MP5 (2000)
Red-dot sight for long-gun (600)
rifle supressor (400)
2 frag grenades (300)
Improved Tactical Outfit -$500
Helmt -$500

870 (900) <- or not? Doesn't seem necessary.
>>74672
Ditch it, I say.
>>
>>74672
I vote to ditch it.
The G36 is good enough for now.
>>
>>74672

I vote ditching
>>
>>74473
Suppressors don't cancel noise,
just lower it. It works better in combat zones were there's already fighting going on(like last mission) so they think the noise comes from an engagement long away.

>>74608
Get a knife, great utility beyond combat. I'd prefer an swiss army knife or it's successor the chinese multiuse spade tho.
>>
>>74720
You're always assumed to have a few small things on you. Phone, multi-tool, folding knife, lighter. Stuff like that.
>>
You’re starting training on SMG’s, so it would make sense to have an SMG. You pick up the MP5, and decide a tactical outfit would be useful, too. The same guy was selling both, so and threw in a new bulletproof helmet as well to sweeten the deal. So there was 500 bucks you didn’t have to spend. As a small thanks, you buy a pair of frag grenades off the guy, so you guess his generosity was probably worth it

You also pick up a suppressor from another table, and on your way out of the show, you grab a red-dot sight for your G36, and leave after spending a grand total of 3,800 dollars, leaving you with 2,400 USD.

All the haggling and internal decision making, you spent about 3 hours in the show, making it now about 5 PM. You should swing by HQ to secure your weapons, and might wanna stay there for a while. Depends on what to do.

>Go to HQ
>Go home
>Spend some time in the city of Atlanta with 4,000 dollars worth of firearms and firearm accessories in your car
>>
>>74750
>Go to HQ
Secure that stuff.

By-the-numbers operation. The key to survival on the battlefield is caution.
>>
>>74750
>Go to HQ

You decide after all to swing by HQ. You store your new toys in your locker in the armory, and on your way out, check out another Level III armor plate. They’re provided free to operatives, Impact!’s way of protecting their investment and whatnot. So, now you’re covered front and back. Of torso, anyway.

The night is still pretty young, but the place seems to be fairly empty. You walked by the bar on your way in, and it was deserted but for the bartender, idly scrolling away on his phone.

There were a few things you could do, but couldn’t quite make up your mind.

>Go to the gym, work out, maybe spar a little if someone’s around
>Go to the medical wing, see if the doctors will give you a little bit of field trauma training
>Go to a club in town, see what’s going on
>Go home. You’re sure that SEAL’s gonna kick your ass tomorrow.
>>
>>74848
>Go to the medical wing, see if the doctors will give you a little bit of field trauma training

We'll get our physical training tomorrow but never pass up the chance to brush up on your skills or learn new ones

Sooner or later, most likely. I don't really have a set goal in mind, so the whole thing is pretty flexible.

Votes called for bugging doctors. Writing.
>>
You remember one of the Rangers from the bar last night mentioning something about the doctors occasionally giving small amounts of medical training. You decide you’re gonna head over and bug them for a bit.

You arrive in the medical wing, and wave at Miller as you pass by his room. You ask a particularly cute red-headed receptionist where you can find a doctor, and she points you to their offices. You knock on an open door, and a black man who looks like he’s in his late 40’s waves you in.

“Hey Doc, I had a few spare hours, and was wondering if you could spend some time giving me a refresher in my field trauma training.”

“Sure thing,” says the doctor, whose degrees on the wall read ‘Robinson’. Let’s head over to an empty room and we’ll get started on some of the basics.”

About three hours later, you and Dr. Robinson leave the room, and you feel like your field medic skills are just as good as they were when you left your SF training courses.

You thank the good doctor, who assures you it’s ‘part of his job’, and part ways. You’re now standing in the central foyer of the building, wondering what to do next. It’s 8 PM, and you’re starting to feel a little tired.

>Go to the gym
>Go home
>Write-in

Alright guys, here's the deal. I gotta shut this down in about half an hour, so we have a few options. I can do a little time skip from now, and we can end with mission prep for Jakarta and get right into it on Monday, or we can go through the next few days 'manually', and probably start Jakarta Monday night. Up to you guys.

A time skip sounds good. Do the training, meet some people that way. And then mission action!

Thank you very much for running this quest!
>>
>>75002
I agree, a time skip is the best option.
>>
>>74969
Time skip
>>
Time skip incomming, then. Check out the character sheet, decide on a loadout.

NOTE: ONLY ITEMS SPECIFIED WILL BE TAKEN UNLESS PREVIOUSLY LISTED UNDER 'ASSUMED'

If you don't say you're bringing your knife, you didn't bring your knife. If you don't say you slapped your new accessories onto your G36, you didn't bring them. All ammo and magazines will be included under the respective weapons, however.
>>
The next few days are a blur of soreness, gunsights, and the smell of gun powder. You don’t remember much else. You do, however, feel much more comfortable with your pistol and your MP5 when you pick them up. The last afternoon you spend relaxing with Casimir, and BSing with Charlie. You pop into Tiffany’s office a few times to ask her the odd question, you swung by the bar after your pistol training and talked to Hyun for a while. All in all, a very productive pair of days.

As you wake up in your bed, you get dressed and head to HQ before swinging by the airfield to grab the gear you’re going to be using in Jakarta. You stare at the locker, unsure what’s going to be the best. The red dot and the suppressor would fit on both your MP5 and the G36, so that’s a tough choice. You kind of just stand there for a while, considering your options.

Mission kit:
Rifle: HK G36 with Red Dot Sight, Rifle supressor
Pistol: Glock G19
Armor: Improved tactical outfit, Level III armor plates, Combat helmet
Else: IFAK (not bleeding out in this mission!), fragmentation grenades (in case we don't hit again), Ka-Bar knife (cheese knife)

Should be enough... as it's nearly everything we have.

Is the Water Bladder under assumed as well?

MP5 SMG for better city fights? Ok, seems better than the mid-range G36.
changing my vote to this.

+water, food -not wanting to end up like the guys in Black Hawk Down.
>>
>>75150
We'll say it's integral to the suit. Just for simplicities sake.

Looks like the only difference is the G36 or the MP5. I'm gonna take off for now, I'll probably post from my phone through the night. Next thread is gonna probably be Monday morning. Figure out the long-gun situation, and feel free to leave any comments or criticism. Thanks for playing folks! See ya later
>>
>>75130

I would vote no on the Frag's, they did want us to limit the use of explosives and automatic fire

For the same reason I believe that the MP5 has a shorter profile than the G36 and might be more useful in building fighting

OP, you said we can only take one long gun into combat; does that mean for the entirety of a mission, or just when we actually go into a fight and we leave the other gun at a field base of operations?
Or is each mission assumed to be one long combat?
>>
>>75178

Nice, we're on the same page there then.

Now that I've thought on the Frag's I'm willing to take them. Rather have them and not need them sort of thing
>>
>>75191
You can take one into combat. You can bring another, if you have somewhere to keep it. Jakarta has a contact, so you do for this one.

I liked this episode. Slice of Life, the mercenary company came to life a bit more with the base (what it can offer) and with the handler Tiffany.

The choices made sense to me.
And that the team isn't set in stone, is refreshing - that way the players can put together their own team later on.

That the base for a smallish mercenary company is this big with this many services means that this alternative world is pretty messed up. Lots of space for adventures!

I look forward to part 3!

>>

Just realized that might not have answered your question. 'Combat' is referred to as leaving the base or safe house for a mission. It's not the start of each fight. If for some reason you are in a city for a few days doing a mission or several missions, you can bring several sets of firearms to use as the needs arise, but can only get them if you go back to the place they're stored.

Also, I've got a while. Not long enough to run, but enough to bullshit a little or do a bit of a QnA if anyone's around.
