You finger at and feel up the gloves that Oryola gave to you, thinking on it. Arisu Shimada is watching you. She's watching you of all people! The University All-Stars Ace, the heir to the Shimada Senshadou Household! One of the premier young prodigies of Tankery! What does she see in you? You're just some tanker fangirl, you don't know anything about what you're doing! Well, you do, but not as much as she does! She probably could run rings around you, literally! That's the Shimada way!

“Hey, Ellie.” Winona walks up to you. Around you, everybody was quickly reloading the tanks, fixing last minute damage to them, etc. “You feel up those gloves any more you'll tear them apart.” You roll your eyes. “Something bothering you?”

“No, it's nothing,” you say. You shove the gloves into your pockets. “Is everything ready for our match today?”

“Yep!” Winona thumps her chest. “But you look like you've seen a ghost. And you were thrashing and kind of flailing around last night.” Were you? That would explain why everyone was sleeping outside. “Did something happen to you?”

“No, no, it's just...” You cough, clearing your throat. “D-... you know the Shimadas, right?” She nods. “What if I were to tell you that Arisu Shimada, young girl, really obsessed with Boko Bear, what if I were to tell you that she were watching me? Right now?”

“... I'd say you were crazy,” says Winona. “But I believe you! Where is she?”

“I dunno, but-”

Winona places her hand on your shoulder, patting it. “Listen, Ellie. Don't worry about it. We still got a match to sweep, alright?” You open your mouth, but she quickly pops her finger on your lips, silencing you. “Ah, ah, ah, no worrying. You're not you when you worry.”

“... right.”

No need to worry about the plan. Just a straight rush for the ridges then see what they're doing.
>>
> Relax yourself, you need to relax.

You sigh deeply. Deep breaths, deep breaths.

You're still panicking a little.

Maybe you should consider going for a jog? Nah, that'd pump your heart rate a bit too much. Uh...

No, no.

Winona looks at you, apparently having not left. “Are you sure you're okay?” You nod, taking a deep breath in, then a deep breath out. Aaahh, that's better. “Tell you what. You just relax, I'll go over the plan with Griselda and relay that to you later, okay?”

“Um, alright.” Winona directs you to sit down on a bench next to your tank, then smiles and walks off. Right, right. You lean back against the road wheel. Just relax. You can do that. You're bred for that! You survived New Jersey after all, you can survive this! Shimada is going to kill you!

BUT GODDAMN IT, YOU CAN'T RELAX-

“Hey, Ellie!” You blink, then look over to see Jack, Jeep Jockey, and the boys from the Skycraft team. Oh really. Boys. Just what you need to relax. That's great. Jack and Jeep Jockey walk up to you. Jack says, “Whoa, Ellie. You look like you just came out of a flat spin. Something the matter?”

“I'm fine,” you mutter. “What do you want?”

“Just came to wish you good luck,” says Jack. He nudges Jeep Jockey. “Jeep Jockey over here dragged us out here to watch you play. We don't normally care for tank stuff but he tells us it's pretty cool. Racing stuff last week kind of gave us some notion of what it was like.”

“Well thank you, Jeep Jockey,” you say to him.

“Don't mention it,” he says. “You look like you could use some support anyway. You nervous?”

“A little bit, it's just- it's not for the reason you think. I'm fully aware we can win,” you say. “It's just... do you guys have like uh...” They tilt their heads, confused. “A Red Baron character in your line of sports?”

They look at each other. “Yeah, actually we do.” Jeep Jockey explains it to you. “He's called the Beast.” … the Beast? Really? You can't help but make a face of disgust at that. “Don't be fooled. He's one of the best Skycraft pilots out there. He can go toe to toe with even adult pilots. He makes miracles with his Me-109. The team faced him once in a match, he clipped wings of over fifteen guys, nobody once put a hole in him.”

Jack nods, uncharacteristically grim. “That Beast, he's a bushwacker and a steamroller all in one. You think you got him once you got the high-altitude advantage, but the minute you try to come down and give him a gunrun on a boom-and-zoom pass, suddenly you're fighting for your life at tree level, hoping he won't clip your wings. He's crazy, he's a different kind of crazy. That's the kind of crazy that makes good pilots.”

“I hear he's got an ugly girlfriend though,” says one of the boys. They all shrug at that, apparently agreeing.

“Why do you ask?” asks Jeep Jockey.

“Well... it's nothing,” you say. At least you're not alone, that's for sure.

“Anyway,” says Jack, now all smiles and sunshine again. “You're going into the match with our blessing.” Gee, just what you needed.

“Oi, boys!” Stack jumps off the tank, hurrying to shoo them away. “Get away from the tank, out, out, out!”

“But we were just-”

“No excuses, get out of here! Augh, don't get your boy germs all over my favorite boy!” yells Stack. She quickly hugs Oliver, pouting furiously at them as they leave. “Boys, think they own everything.”

“Hey, I was just looking for you,” says Griselda. The two of you start walking up to meet with Salome again onstage in front of the crowd. “Winona told me you were nervous about the Shimada thing. Let me just be clear, treat her like you would your parents watching you.”

“... that doesn't make me feel better.”

Griselda giggles a little. “Alright, alright, hehe. Look, whatever she's watching you for, forget it. You're here to conquer, we are going to get some. That's how we're going to do it. And I need you 100%. Because uh... there's an unforeseen issue.”

“What's that?” you ask.

“Oleg came to me in the middle of the night last night,” she says. “He says that the damage to the Hellcat almost made it unusable for today. He's telling me that the grind of the tournament is starting to get to the tanks.” Really? They seem to work so fine though. They're really fighting if they're falling apart on you. “You haven't been knocked out all that much, so you haven't experiencd it, but Suvorov tells me the Panzer III has been acting a little clunky during training too.”

“Is it going to be a problem?” you ask.

“Only if we don't get money to fix the tanks,” she says. “I'm going to try and fundraise for this week. But I need your help when you can help, alright? Winona already told me you're busy but... at least try and find some time for it?”

Griselda smiles happily at you. “Thank you. It means a lot to me. If we can keep the tanks going for just another week and we can hold our Wild Card spot, we can rest easy. Until then though.” She pats your arm. “We're up shit creek without a paddle.”

You sigh. “Right. So the plan for today then is...”

“We hold the ridge, and hope that we can figure out a way to beat them. All that open ground in front of them, there will be no room for error even with their passiveness and uncoordinated attitutde. It'll be a shooting gallery out there. Don't worry though, I'll figure something out.”

You took one last look at the map. “Alright, Ellie, same as last time. Take Dalia and rush the ridge. Iris, take the heavies, you'll move opposite of Ellie, everyone else with me. Got it?” orders Griselda.

“Got it!”

The signal flare flies up and explodes, signalling the start of the match.

“Ellie, take point! On the bounce!”

You're still starting opposite sides.

> Rush the southeastern ridge.

“We're headed southeast. Josephina, punch it.” Your tanks start to roll out of the start line, yours and Dalia's especially as they burn across the flats of New Mexico. “Dalia, how's your Hellcat doing?”

Some smoke coughs out of the engine block, but it appears to be handling itself well. “We're doing fine! Better than the Cubans that's for sure!”

“At least we didn't get knocked on our sides last match,” says Benny.

“Cut the chatter,” says Griselda. “We're heading to Corona to form the center. Iris you're going north again.”

“Copy,” says Iris.

Your tanks start to veer away from each other. From this angle, you can't see what the other tanks are doing, but you don't see an awful lot of smoke from their side of the field. Hm, what could they be planning?

Well, once you get to the ridge though...

As you approach the ridge, you pull out your binoculars and take a look.

Hm, it appears they are preparing defensive positions. According to your woman's intuition, yes they are planning on a slugfight. Or at the very least, they want you to come to them this time in a coordinated fashion. They're planning for the open ground and distance that you have to cover to be your downfall.

You peer through your binoculars again. Jagdtigers all across the south. Everything else to western side it appears. You don't see the Flag Tank though, it must be hiding in the back, or thanks to their dazzle camo it might be in the line and you just don't see it.

Also behind those Jagdtigers appear to be much smaller heavy tanks, probably the KV-1Es. They're defending in depth. So even if you get close, you're gonna have to deal with the KV-1s.

Right... “Griselda?”

“I see them too,” says Griselda. “They're wanting us to move in.”

“Should we?”

“We don't have much choice, we can't win in a straight slugfest,” she declares. “They might be better prepared for a rush this time. And we don't exactly have numbers or anything to break them up easily.”

“This isn't going to be a charge of the Light Brigade is it?” asks Suvorov. “BECAUSE THAT'D BE AWESOME! I always wanted to be in a suicidal cav charge!” Ever the optimist.

Stay where we are, bring up the Pershing, IS-2, KT and JT to just behind the lip of the ridge, out of sight of Gernsback and begin bombarding them with Semi-indirect fire. We spot the fall of shot and adjust as necessary. It might not be wildly effective but it could disrupt them or force them to move position so we can advance.

After some lengthy planning, Iris' crew move up to their ridge, just behind its lip. Then they fire away indirectly. You may not be SPG material, but it'll have to do. You watch and spot the drop of the shells. “You're a little short,” you say. “Higher.” They fire again, this time landing amongst the formation. The AP shells however don't really do anything at the sheer range they're firing at, especially not from an indirect manner. “Alright, keep that up.”

After several rounds of that, the formation does not move at all.

Damn it. You check again, it appears Salome is in that formation as well. She's probably keeping everyone calm.

“What are we standing around for!?” yells Regina.

“If we had something to bait them into our firing range, we could probably do it,” says Griselda. “But...”

“They're not taking it,” you declare. “It's either attack or be swisscheesed, or wait and be swisscheesed anyway when they decide they want to move into range to fire.”

Serina says, “Maybe us heavy tanks could bait them? We have the best survivability.”

Everyone who's got smoke shells for their guns, range them to about a km short of the Western defensive line and saturate the area with smoke for 10-15 minutes, then push hard down route 54, using Cameleon to cover our East Flank, push the Fast tanks up onto Cameleon while the Heavies move around the smoke to take up positions behind the railway embankment at C016. The Heavies should draw their ire while the fast stuff hides on the hill looking for their flag, which they will then ambush from the flank.

“Forget it. I'm baiting them in,” you say.

“Do you want us to come with you?” asks Dalia.

“I'm not asking you too,” you say. “Besides, your tank is still damaged.” Your Cromwell rolls ahead, down the ridge's slope and out into the open. At that, the Hellcat stays put. Alright, Ellie, stay calm. Just stay calm.

Fuck, you're running into a meatgrinder.

You stop a good distance away from their lines, and they still haven't fired at you yet. Maybe they're wondering what's going on? Maybe you've caught them by surprise?

“Winona, give them some AP.” Your gun shoots at one of the Jagdtigers. Predictably, it bounces. In return, they fire a huge salvooo OH SHIT. “EVASIVE ACTION!” Josephina hits it into forward, then speeds off to the right, dodging a spread of 128mm shells directed straight at you. “Forward southwards, go!” She turns the tank around and starts speeding away. You turn yourself around and look back. The Jagdtigers are starting to follow you! Hey!

But then they stop, and roll back into their starting positions. Damn...

Wait.

“Griselda-”

“I got the same idea,” says Griselda. “Dalia, move up and support Ellie now. Iris, with the exception of Regina, move up as well. We're coming up too.”

“Go! Go!” Josephina quickly barrels Oliver all the way to their lines. You brace for dear life as 128mm shells fly past you, exploding into the dirt all around you. Shit, shit, please work, please work! You close within 900 meters, 800, 500, 400, 300... “Fire again!” Another shot, another bounce off of the Jagdtiger's frontal armor. Well, that was worth a shot! “Back, back!” Josephina slides Oliver around, hurrying to run off. You are hanging around what is essentially point blank range here!

You look back, and indeed you see the Jagdtigers beginning to follow you, all of them! But the KV-1s stay put, damn it. You did see the TOG II Flag behind those KV-1s though so...

“We're here!” yells Dalia. She speeds past. “What the-” She looks forward. “OH! FUCK! TURN AROUND!” Their tank slides around, narrowly dodging a barrage of shells. “JESUS CHRIST!”

“We're advancing,” says Iris.

“As are we,” says Griselda. “How are the Jagdtigers on your end, Ellie?” You look back, they're still following, they've broken the defense line completely! Uh...

“Go, go! Now!” Your tank starts to turn around, speeding towards the Jagdtigers. You must have caught them by surprise, and they pause apparently to track you. But thanks to their limited traverses and their slow speed, you easily rush past them. Dalia as well manages to make it past too. “Fire smoke!” Your smoke shells deploy, clouding the area between the Jagdtigers and the KV-1s before they can come and support. The Jagdtigers pause, now completely panicking with you and Dalia rushing in around them. Dalia takes the first shot, point blank through a Jagdtiger's engine block.

You fire a shot, and it smashes through the side of a Jagdtiger at point blank as well.

The Jagdtigers confusedly try to turn on the spot, trying to track you all. You stop up in between two Jagdtigers as they track you, then, “Now!” You speed off. They fire at each other.

Ha! That actually worked!

“We won't last long and we can't retreat,” says Iris.

“Hold out, Iris. Ellie, you need to hurry and break through, we'll mop up and cover you!”

Alright, but you think on it for a second. Those KV-1s haven't come to help the Jagdtiger. Which means they're probably sticking close to the Flag tank. Hm...

We can't afford to wait. Get in amongst the KVs, WP as we approach to blind them then cover the rest of the area with Smoke Launchers. The KV-1 might be better in a brawl than their other tanks but it still suffers from the Russian achilles heel of awful visibility, if we can surround everything in smoke and dust they'll likely lose track of us. Tell Dalia to stay right on our tail as we go in.

“They're contracting themselves and leaving the Jagdtigers out to dry,” says Griselda. “Don't waste your time on the other tanks, try and hit that flag tank now before they regroup!”

“Deploy smoke, Stack!” She nods, firing the bomb thrower. The smoke shell lands in the group of tightly packed KV-1s, completely shrouding them, and you for a bit. That'll buy you some time.

> KO: SERINA HILDEBRAND (Tiger II(P) “Cub”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: SALOME DEL RIO (Char 2C “Lorraine”)

“HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN!?” yells Serina. That is a good question.

Dalia follows you in, but immediate the KV-1s pounce through the smoke. OH SHIT. Dalia ends up crashing her Hellcat straight into a KV-1s front, snapping the tracks off completely. And to make things worse, she gets a shot right into the turret front.

> KO: DALIA EARNHARDT (M18 Hellcat “Mifune”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: WEAVER WHITEHEAD (KV-1E)

“Fuck!” yells Dalia. “Sorry, Ellie!”

Your tank squeezes right in between two KV-1s, scraping sparks and metal across their suspension as you push through. You hear a snapping sound and then a rapid rattling. “What the hell is that noise!?” you ask.

Stack explains it to you as she loads in an APDS round. “We must have knocked something loose in the suspension!” Fuck! Goddamn it! You plow through the smoke, and find the TOG II*'s gun barrel pointed straight at you. “JOSIE!” She wheels right, forcing it to track you around. That's it, that's it... follow you, follow you...

Now! “Now, now! Brake!” She hits the brakes hard, but suddenly you hear an incredibly loud snap. Your right track suddenly gives out, shedding a wheel as well. OH FUCK. You suddenly going sliding round. Your aim is suddenly thrown off as the turret keeps pointing at you. “FUCK, FUCK! WINONA! TRAVERSE LEFT!”

“I'M TRYING!” she yells. Your gun barrels meet together.

OH FUCK OH FUCK

You both fire.

Griselda and Salome shake hands. “You beat us fair and square,” says Salome. “I'm only sorry that we didn't put up more of a fight, but...” You all look at her Jagdtigers, their brilliant murals stained with black soot and scraped by tank shells and gashes on the armor. “I suppose this is an opportunity to do some repainting. Perhaps add to what we have.”

“I guess it is,” says Griselda. “You guys do a lot of good work in the art scene.”

“Yes.” Salome rubs her chin, smiling. “We should get together for a night, Griselda. I can teach you and your friends the art of drawing, painting, modeling, the likes.”

“We'd like that one day, but we got a tournament to do,” says Griselda.

Salome smiles at you. “And to you, Ellie. Nice work. I'd say you almost didn't need your team to beat us.”

“Thank you. But it wasn't just me, it was my team. You can't really paint a pretty picture with just one color you know?”

“Tell that to modern artists,” Salome quietly mutters. “But, yes, I can concur with that statement. Your last maneuver there as well, I don't normally care for Tankery, the only reason I do Tankery is because elected to try it and I figured it could be fun, and it is very fun. But that last maneuver, it seemed like something the Nishizumis came up with except uh... a bit longer?”

“Yeah,” says Griselda. “The Nishizumi hook normally starts pretty close to the tank in question. Yours started right out of the smoke waaaay a ways away. Of course, your suspension did give out but, yeah. I think that might be something worth practicing later, Ellie.”

“Really?” Did you invent a new maneuver or something? You hope not, you don't want people stealing it or trying to harass you trying to learn it. Ugh, that'll be the worst. “Well, I mean... we'll see.”

“Well, regardless.” Salome folds her arms, nodding to you two. “I look forward to seeing you both more, perhaps we can meet again for FleetFest in the coming weeks.” Oh yeah, the Combined Fleet Festival. And the All-Star game! “I must go.”

“Later,” says Griselda. She folds her arms, smirking at you. “Well, well, if it isn't my MVP.” She punches your arm, and you frown a little, blushing. “What's with that look? You almost singlehandedly carried us through this set! Come on, be proud!”

“I am,” you say. “But-” Griselda wraps her arm around you.

“Tell you what,” says Griselda. “I'll treat you and the team to some cake when we get back to LGA. Okay? I know money's tight but I can probably scrounge a bit up for you to have some fun with.”

“Oh, you don't need to do that!” you declare. Oh, no, people spending money on you! YOUR ONE WEAKNESS! NO.

“It's my treat,” says Griselda. You sigh, looking to your cheering crews as they high five each other and knock elbows in celebration. Everyone starts to file towards the trucks that'll take you to your planes.

Stack jumps on top of you, hugging you from behind and forcing Griselda to let go of you. “HA! WE DID IT!” She makes you stumble a little as you grab her legs, trying not to let her go and look like a total dick. “Woo! Yeah! Ellie for President!”

“I'm not running for Presi- get off me!” you call. Stack continues to piggyback on you. For fucks sake, Stack! You will drop her! But you don't want to because that'd be mean!

“Aw, come on, Stack! I want to ride on Ellie too!” yells Winona with a furious pout. NOT YOU TOO.

You sigh, then look to the side.

And there you see Arisu Shimada in the crowd of people as they take pictures of you all leaving. She gives you a blank stare, then a thumbs up.

You decide it best just to give a thumbs up back, and let her know you appreciate her validation. Arisu nods to you, then turns around and quickly disappears into the crowd. Something about that girl makes her so easily missed in a large group of people. But you suppose that is the Shimada way: disappear quietly, reappear loudly.

But still, you were dreading tomorrow, even on the truck ride back to the planes, you leant back and stared out into the countryside. “What's got you down, Ellie?” asks Ingrid.

“Tomorrow's the start of a big thing. I gotta lead an expansion project in the lower levels,” you say. “The whole week I'll be real busy.”

“Well, at least try and make some time for us when you can,” says Winona.

“I will.” You fold your arms, sighing deeply. Hopefully they might be part of it anyway. “Still, we won. I just hope we don't get too complacent or anything for next week.”

“We'll be fine! I saw the match schedule!” says Winona. “It's Candido Mariano Da Silva Rondon High School. They're pushovers. Nothing but draws, draws, draws,” she proclaims. “I think we can build up our lead against them if we win.”

Stack gasps. “Guess what though! JWC lost today!” Really!? “That means if we sweep and they lose or get into a draw next week, we could take the division lead!” Oh! Wow. Nice!

“Well. Next week then, we got a must win battle,” you declare.

That's it for tonight's LGA2. We'll be back tomorrow for more hopefully.

Here are the standings with the completion of this set. Notice a couple of things:

- I've added the kills leaders for both the WL and EL.

- As Stack and co. said earlier, LGA is now threatening for the division lead and is closing the gap on JWC. If you sweep next set, and JWC loses, you'll take the lead. If they draw, you'll tie it.

- George Washington now takes Wild Card #2 with Hugo Gernsback's loss.

Highlights:

- LGA: Elodie R. Zumwalt power slides near record distance to outflank Flag tank. Earns sweep and set MVP.

- ZES: New ZES foreign crews perform Bermuda Triangle attack, entrap three tanks (including flag) and eliminate all at once.

- CG: Camp Gagetown earns sweep on 5 kilometer killshot by Meryl Hoffmeister on Flag tank.

- KGB: Oryola leads KGB to sweep by waiting Santiago's strong position out for 14 hours. Santiago desperately attacks into strong defensive lines.

- GWMA: Carolina Greene apparently gets lost in a forest after being separated during skirmish. Two hours later outflanks entire Glenn Curtiss defense and wipes four artillery SPGs.

Do you think they view her as the Western Shimada in waiting?
