>>You could head to school like Emily, get an education and all that.

“I think it would be best if you went to school, get an education you know. Back when I was only a little older than you, I did some really, really stupid shit. But look at me now, I turned out alright thanks to education.”

She puts her hands behind her head, clearly not very enthusiastic about sitting at a desk and getting lectured at for the next couple years.

“Just sayin’, I think it’s your best choice right now.”

Finally, she gives in with a sigh, “Yeah, alright. I’ll go. Guess I’ll finally meet your little sister, huh?”

You smile and pat her on the shoulder, a grade lower than headpat sure, but nice and proper for the situation.

Walking over to your own room, you dig through your maligned briefcase, scarred and battle-worn over exhausting years of struggling to comprehend the inner workings of both law and order, until you find the appropriate material.

Plucking the musty note from amongst your things, you turn around and hand it over to Lili, her face puzzled as she looks closer.

“A-an I-O-U?” she frowns as she reads out the hastily scribbled words written in smudged ink.

Your grin widens, “Let’s just say someone owes me and leave it at that, okay? Pass it over to any of the teachers or higher-ups, I’m sure you’ll be able to take care of the rest. Need any school supplies, you come back and ask me or Emily.”

“I got it.” She replies in a slight daze, probably contemplating the fact that she’ll actually have to learn things that don’t involve magic or killing people, a considerable downgrade of her priorities.

“Alright, kid. I’m going to visit our friends at the jail, should be back in a few.” You say as you sling your briefcase and put your shoes on and open the door. Skipping onto the dirt, you push for a brisk walk over to the Watch jail, a medium-size structure built to contain a sizable number of ne’er-do-wells within its stone walls. Crossing through town and saying your greetings and small-talk with the locals as you make your way through, you eventually reach the gatehouse of the prison.

You chuckle, the populace had made plenty of complaints about the size of the prison, considering it unnecessary and unsightly for such a small country town. Likewise, the Watch had also voiced complaints based on the size of the prison, noting that even with a full garrison, they didn’t need to use most of the place just based on the size of the population. However, after last night, the increased space was a godsend to house the big band of bandits now finding themselves guests inside those cold walls.

“Good Afternoon, boys.” You say with a smile as you tip your Officer’s cap to the two Watchmen on duty, the new AND shiny Sergeant pin adorning it looking especially posh in the sunlight.

The larger Watchman on duty with his uniform looking nice and clean, and with his spear actually at the ready nods solemnly before elbowing his friend, a messy string bean of a man engrossed in a cartoon book. While not inherently disturbing, you frequently did the same on duty, after all, you notice he reaches to his pants and fixes something with his hands before standing at attention, grabbing his spear at the last second.

“U-uh, you too, sir.” Replies the embarrassed Watchman, his face trying desperately to hide his current state of fluster.

“Here for anything in particular?”

You nod, “Would like to see the new prisoners if that isn’t too much trouble.”

He jabs a thumb at the lock on the gate, and his larger friend saunters over and begins the process of attaining entry without the help of a key.

You frown and point at the gate, where the larger man begins to jab the point of his spear into the large lock in a very specific way. “Shouldn’t the two of you…have a…key or something?” you ask puzzledly.

The skinny Watchman chuckles, “Should is the key word. Captain took our keys this morning, told us he didn’t want to risk any chance of those bastards getting out. So, Brutus over there has to get that thing open the hard way.”

“Couldn’t an infiltrator or anybody else with a spear just do that and get inside then?”

He actually laughs a little, “No, sir. The two of us have fiddled around with the lock so long on watch, we’ve gotten the secret down. Doubt anybody else could besides us, and if they get it wrong, the bloody thing will jam anyways.”

Suddenly, the steel lock on the gate snaps open and drops to the ground and Brutus looks up with a face flush with triumph. “That one a record, Julius?” he laughs as he slaps his partner in the back with gusto. “Think so, bud, anyways,” Julius bows and gestures to the gate, “You’re clear to go, sir.”

Walking into the cold interior of the prison, you find the Captain himself waiting for you with a stern grin.

“Glad you could make it, Strong.”

”Brief me on the prisoners, Watchman.”

He nods, and his face surprisingly gains more joviality, not less, “Straight and to the point, I like that.”

Walking over to the cells, the two of you pass into the depths of the prison, where the sounds of inmates doing their usual inmate things begins to slowly overwhelm your ears. Crying, ranting, just doing stupid, loud shit, the essentials of prison. A filthy, grubby hand sticks outwards from the bars of a cell and manages to nearly nick your hat off your head. With a grunt, the Captain grabs the hand and pulls the offender straight into the iron of the bars before twisting the hand until he hears screaming.

Properly incensed, the rest of the prisoners promptly shut up for the rest of the trip, ending in the lamp-lit room that serves as the Captain’s Quarters. Sitting himself down at his paper-plagued table, he lifts up a sheet of paper and hands it to you as you sit down yourself.

“Quite a lot of prisoners,” you say with detachment as you go over the numbers and report, “What’ll you do?”

“Not completely sure,” the Captain admits sheepishly, “Never had to deal with a band this large y’know. Most of these bastards have been missing for years, hardened criminals most of them.

“But we can’t just execute ALL of them you know. Would be a lot of trouble, and I’m sure they aren’t all cold-blooded murderers. Trouble is it’s hard to tell, lying being second nature to many of them and all.”

“How many of them would you ship off to the Capital?” you ask carefully.

“Depends on how many of them can’t be saved, I guess. Don’t exactly like having the kind of people that would slit your throat for a penny around women and children, if you get me.”

You spend a few moments thinking, you need men to man the booth, and the Watch are understaffed as is, but would you really recruit from this bunch?

After all, they can’t all be evil bastards can they?

>”I’ll interrogate them and see how many can be saved. I’ll take three of them myself if there are even that many.”

>”Ship the bastards off to the Capital, we don’t need scum like them around here.”

Not sure if the higher-ups would be okay with recruiting from criminals though.

“”I’ll interrogate them and see how many can be saved. I’ll take three of them myself if there are even that many.”

He looks at you with a raised eyebrow, “Sure, but I wouldn’t expect much.”

The next couple hours for you are spent in the dreary interrogation room, where you give interviews to every single one of the prisoners. You encounter a varied range of liars and cheats, some of which truly test your skills and training to be quite frank. Sob story after sob story, bullshit lie after bullshit lie, you endure the storm of deception until you compile a full report.

Returning to the company of the Watch Captain again, you slump down in his chair and plop down you report on his desk, watching him handle the paper with curiosity.

“Quite detailed, I must say,” the Captain says as he takes his time reading through every single one of your notes and conclusions, “I can see that Sergeant pin isn’t just for show.”

You absorb the compliment in silence as you close your eyes and try to calm down your exhausted noggin.

“Only five viable candidates?” chuckles the Captain with an amused air, obviously not very surprised at the results of your work.

“I’ll send them in for you.” He says as he walks outside and whistles to some of the Watchmen on guard and hands one the report.

Turning to you as you stand up, he looks at you with a funny expression in his eyes. “Good to have two new faces around here…” he chuckles to you, grinning wider at your shocked expression.

“Felons make good Watchmen, Dick. Call it a Watch tradition.”

Raising an eyebrow, you return his smile and walk over to the plain, white walls of the interrogation room. Sitting at the desk, you wait patiently as five prisoners are shoved politely into the room by several armed Watchmen and into the purposely uncomfortable sitting stools.

“Glad to see you boys again.” You smile as three of the prisoners recognize you and gasp.

“Under different pretenses, of course.”

Interesting, it is, that the bandits you’d met personally on the road were among the least rotten. Well, them and others among that outlaw escapade.

“W-why us?” one whispers in shock at realizing the relative disparities in power between them and a previous mark.

>Because I believe that every man has a right to rise above the conditions imposed upon them by fate. That and you didn’t lie to my face.

“Because I believe that every man has a right to rise above the conditions imposed upon them by fate. That and you didn’t lie to my face.” You say with perfect honesty to the ragged group of bastards sitting in front of you.

“I’m sure you had your reasons for joining those sorry cunts, and I’m not particularly interested in your answers. No, what I’m here for is to utilize the untapped potential in you lot, perhaps blighted a tad by a little law-breaking and all, but potential nonetheless. The most important part is the fact that you were all fairly new to the outlaw life, can’t exactly have sociopaths on my crew after all.”

Another one of the bandits’ leaps in, clearly interested in your offer and the whole “Not going to die or spend the rest of life in a cell” deal.

“What are you proposing, exactly, sir?”

You reach into your briefcase and take out the three Comfian pins and lay them out on the table with careful motions.

“Three of you can join me at the border, and the other two will join the Watch. Probies for both jobs, solid pay, solid benefits, but most importantly, a clean slate in the eyes of the law.”

Amazed eyes peer at you from the bodies of the dirty men sitting in front of you, and the silence in the room proves pervasive.

“Take your time, this isn’t an easy choice to make in any case. You’ll most likely be doing it for the rest of your life and all that.”

A few awkward minutes’ pass, and you check your watch. You need to get moving soon, and these wankers have been huddled up and whispering in a corner for a little too long.

“Done yet?” you ask in a neutral tone, though in reality you despise this situation and everybody involved.

A few nods, more whispers, but no real action.

You’re not getting paid enough for this shit, you don’t think.

Hey, if they prefer to spend their lifes rotting in jail, be my guest! Pretend to motion for the guards to take them back to the cell
>>
You narrow your eyes at the bunch and slam your fist down on the table hard enough to catch their attention.

“You will find in both of these jobs, that you will have to put up with a lot of shit. Thankfully, "pansy subordinates" are not in that list. Get moving!”

Finally, the bastards arrange themselves in order and three of them take the pins, while the other two stand with their hands at their sides, awaiting instatement by the Watch.

You beckon the three prisoners to follow you and make your way back to your house, making them wait outside in the sun as you grab the uniforms. Handing them out, you instruct them politely in the arts of procedure and class, which takes a little longer than you’d like, but all things considered, they’re rather good sports about it. Finally, you hand them their caps and handbooks and begin to lecture them on the rules of the job until you’re interrupted by the sounds of two teenage girls talking as they do in the distance.

Looking around, you see Lili and Emily walking side by side up to the house, luckily still engrossed in their teenage nonsense. Facing to the new recruits, you fix them with a stern glare, stifling any fidgeting or other movement.

You poke the one in the middle in the chest and twist your head to glance at every one of them, “Copy me if you want to keep your jobs, mates.”

As two pairs of teenage eyes fall upon you and your crew, you fall to your knees and bow in front of Emily.

“Your Royal Highness, I am yours to command.”

Admirably, the three privates behind you copy your performance down to the wire, complete with fancy bowing and accented “Your Highnessing”.

You are rightfully, happily rewarded with giggling and laughs from the two, and Emily walks up and gives you a gloved headpat, a strange reversal of sorts but you enjoy it.

“Excuse me, Princess, I will be gone but a moment, some royal arrangements must be made. Very Important, I reassure you.”

Leaving the two little lights of your life behind, you enter into a huddle with the three men and- wow holy shit you don’t even know their names. Understanding your puzzled pause, the man immediately next to you helps you out by pointing to each man in sequence, “Just call us by our nicknames, I’m Brick, he’s Rock, and that’s Stone.”

You blink, “Sounds good. Anyways lads, our shift will start in an hour, meet me back out here then alright. Questions? Concerns?”

Brick looks at you with trepidation, “Would you happen to uh, know where we could stay until our first paycheck?”

Ohhhhh riiiiight.

>You can stay with me. On the floor. After we all reach the understanding that any funny business will probably mean death. By me.

>I’m sure the Watch has a few cells open, with you boys walking free and all :^)

“I’ll lend some money, but don’t spend it all in one place, or anywhere not tangentially related to solving your housing issue. Because I’m your boss and all.”

You take out some money from your pack, carefully counting it before doling it out to the grateful hands of your recruits. “This is for lodging and food ONLY. And if you burn it on anything that affects your performance, I will be taking this loan back with INTEREST. Got it?”

Meekly nodding, they take the money with careful hands and place them in their uniforms with reassuring discipline, meaning they’ll count it out after you leave.

You walk into the house, eyeing the two girls in the living room doing homework together and chatting like old friends. A smile crosses your face, as you hurry up and fix up some dinner for them, which ends up taking the most of your hour. Serving up two plates of random shit you managed to cook up with more luck than skill, you say your goodbyes and exchange hugs and other pleasantries. As you leave, you remember to check the medicine cabinet and find it almost empty, necessitating a trip to the doctor.

Grabbing your hat, you walk outside and check the time. Ten minutes, enough to pick up some more. Looking around, you don’t find any of your men nearby, but if they know what’s good for them they’ll be back in time.

Walking over to the Doctor’s place, you walk up to the nurse at the counter and take out your wallet. She shakes her head and gives you an apologetic look. “Sorry, we’re out.”

“How long until another shipment comes along?” you ask worriedly, knowing full well there wasn’t enough medicine left in the cabinet to sustain another two days.

The nurse checks a sheet of paper on the desk, before dropping it and pulling her mouth closer together.

“It says To Be Determined, so we don’t exactly know.”

Your frown gets a little worse, and your anxiety kicks up just like it did right before finals in the academy.

“Why?”

She rubs the back of her neck with a free hand, “No clue, but I’ve heard there’s some trouble down in Chedrostin, bad enough that everyone’s been taking the long way around it.”

Well shit.

“Hey,” the nurse calls out to you as you begin to leave out the door,” I’ll be sure to keep my eye out for the stuff if we get any more, alright.”

Nodding in gratitude, you walk outside into the cool shadows of the sunset, the buildings around you projecting looming shades of black. Making your way to your house, you find the three recruits outside your house practicing procedures or reading the handbook. You’re impressed, or about as much as can be by their effort, mainly because it reminds you a lot of your time working at the academy. Drive really can do wonders to reform a person, you chuckle to yourself.

You check your watch, one minute to go. Walking back inside our house, Emily leaps around a corner with a feral grin on her face.

“BOO!”

You get off your arse and get up backward to pick up your cap off the floor as Emily and Lili burst out laughing, while you stand straight again and narrow your eyes.

“T-that actually GOT you, ha ha hahaha!” she manages to choke out between laughs, the two of them nearly collapsing with mirth.

You do an undignified pout for her before crossing your arms together, “Yeah you got me good…THIS time.”

Patting her on the head, you make a throat-cutting gesture with your thumb and make your way outside, the sounds of laughing teenagers following you.

“Alright boys, let’s get moving.” You wave the recruits over as you get on the free horse the King handed you, and lead the bunch on the road towards your little dinky booth.

“So, boys,” you start up as the four of you travel in silence on the paved road in the near dark, “Anything I should know about you?”

Brick looks up and starts, “We’re actually all related by blood. Those other two guys with the Watch now too. It’s why we took so long to choose.”

You wince, “Didn’t know, hope I didn’t push anybody into anything they didn’t want, well, you know what I mean.”

A smile breaks on Brick's face and he shakes his head, “No, sir. We found a place to stay together in town, and the boys at the Watch are nice enough.”

You turn your head to face the road, but a smile blossoms on your face nonetheless. “.... bought the first round for the Watch with your paychecks?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Well done.”

With that, the road up ahead melds into the familiar old shadow of the Booth, and dismount the horse and tie it down to the signpost. Grabbing that funny little hammer from the saddlebag, you walk up to the booth and tap it lightly against the wood.

The booth begins to shake, as does the hammer which you promptly toss at the bloody thing and the four of you run for the fuckin’ woods. After a solid minute, the four of you finally get together in the bushes and creep up to the booth and find it expanded. The single wooden booth made of old wood and nails has suddenly been replaced by a larger, more imposing triple booth structure, with iron reinforcement and a wicked new paint job with the emblem of Comfia emblazoned on the front.

“Magic.” You hear the three recruits mutter in a mixture of fear and awe before you walk up and touch the beautifully formed structure with your own hands.

“Fuckin’ magic man.” You whisper as you head to the back and unlock the door, pleased beyond words that the lock hasn’t changed at all.

You call the boys over and begin to instruct them on the finer procedures of handling customs until you remember you may be forgetting somebody. Walking over to the edge of the woods, you shout, “HEY ASTAROTH, YOU HERE BUDDY?”

Ignoring the puzzled looks of your men, you continue to shout and generally act like an ape, which means you literally leap out of your boots when a massive hand clamps itself on your shoulder.

“You called, friend?” says the gigantic horned hellspawn standing right behind you with most of his bandages removed and his enormous blade strapped to his back with what looks like a conglomeration of materials scavenged from the bandits.

“LORD MAN, DON’T SCARE ME LIKE THAT MY HEART CAN’T TAKE THIS SHIT.”

“My deepest apologies, I did not mean to frighten you so. Perhaps old habits really do die hard, as they say.”

“Wah- fuck never mind man, what have you been up to?”

A familiar pointy-eared face pokes out of a nearby bush behind you to answer your question.

“You know Dick, for a glorified clerk, you really like to get yourself in trouble.”

Viessa’s smiling face pops into your view as you turn around, along with an outstretched palm, the universal sign for high-five.

You oblige.

“Astaroth is going to be staying with me for now, he doesn’t have any other place to go and I have plenty of spare room for him to sleep. Just have to make sure he doesn’t set the damn place on fire, y’know. He’s nice enough for a demon, and he helps with all the physical stuff!”

You raise your eyebrows pointedly, before she indignantly scolds you, “Okay, look! Shit is heavy sometimes okay! And the fucking jelly jar is a piece of shit half the time. Don’t give me that look asshole.”

Astaroth interposes himself between the two of you, “I think, friends, that more pressing matters are in our hands at the moment.”

Pointing at the road, everybody turns to face a most unexpected sight. A refugee train of monsters coming from the Dungeon side of the border, some bandaged and most burned, but all of them weary beyond words. You see goblins and kobolds, orcs and ogres, furrybait humanoids and grotesque plant creatures along with a plethora unnameable beings all scuttling together with their belongings.

“Oh shiii-” is all you manage before dashing off to the booth as the train reaches the terrified faces of your recruits.

Slapping your cap on your head, you confront the leader of the ragged train, the same minotaur you met only a day or two ago.

“What exactly is the meaning of this, bud?” you ask curiously.

The minotaur looks at you with tired eyes, traces of burns and scratches over his weathered hide.

“The demons have gone mad, human. The whole Dungeon has just become a battleground for them and every other Kingdom, no place for kids and those who can’t fight back. Hopefully, they can be allowed to stay. Anything would be better than the alternative."

You grimace, “It’s going to be a lot of requests for Asylum at once, you know. You sure you can’t stagger this out over a day or two?”

The minotaur shakes his head, “We have wounded, elderly, they won’t last a day in the wilderness. And some of them won’t leave the others behind, we have no choice.”

Fucking hell.

“I’m asking because the only way you’re getting everybody in right now is going to require me breaking the law in a few places. It’s not something I consider very lightly, you understand.”

To your surprise, the Minotaur kneels and bows to you, something you’ve never heard a Minotaur ever do before.

“Human, I beg of you, do whatever it takes to save them. They have nothing left, and I would gladly offer up my soul for these people if it would sway you to help us.”

You look over and see Astaroth brooding as he examines the line of misery before him, clearly furious about the actions of his people. Viessa is on the other side checking the wounded and elderly, her animal familiars doing their best to cheer up the children and carry belongings. She looks at you before whispering up close to you, “He’s not lying, Dick. Frankly, I’m surprised they made it here at all without treatment. I can help treat some of them right now, but I think you’ll need to move them into town or we’re looking at a lot of bodies.”

I have a few of THOSE kinds of stories.

>>756328
>I FUCKING KNOW DON'T CALL ME OUT OKAY
it's not really much to feel bad about. Most QMs don't really estimate these sorts of things well, just cont. is fine.

>Only allow those with the correct papers, for now, the others will have to wait, you’ll have to set up triage.

>Get the people with the right papers in, see if they’ll be able to bring back medical supplies and stabilize the worst cases.

>Call Moby and the others to ferry in medical supplies too.

Letting them pass would be the most humane thing to do, but because bureaucrat aren't human, I'll switch this>>756460 with >>757228

Moving the wounded too much is a bad idea. Getting them to town would take too long.
>>
Just to clarify, I see the most votes on triage with a hint of having a medicine run going.

Is this correct?

Yes, seems like it is.

Yes

You look at the Minotaur, before looking at the stream of walking wounded limping about the place, some being carried on stretchers or wheelbarrows by others.

“We get them through tonight, you’ll still lose the most wounded of the bunch, better to get those with legal papers to get some real medical supplies back here and get some triage done right now.” The minotaur looks confused, before standing back up and opening his mouth before you cut him off.

“Look, buddy, we’re losing people either way. We’ll save the most people my way, and it’ll help if you quit your noble savage bullshit and listen to me, alright friend?” The minotaur smirks, “You sure you don’t have any minotaur blood in you?”

“Hope not, would be awkward to explain. Anyways, Moby get over here!” you call out in the general direction of the Booth, and you hear the sound of cracking rock. Moby flies out of the exploded layer of stone he sleeps in, appearing before you like a vengeful bat from hell. “You called, boss?” he asks as he perches on a nearby rock. You pull down on your cap and walk over to the refugee train, where your men are working as fast as they can to get the legitimate paper holders through. “Could you find these nice folks some medical supplies, Moby?” you reply as you crack your knuckles and grab a pen from your pocket protector. “Got it, boss. We’ll be done before you know it!” you hear from the rock where Moby had just been, his wings flapping transforming his silhouette flashing across the ground instantly.

You spend the next couple hours instructing and passing working at the booths, Astaroth spends it keeping guard and lifting entire wheelbarrows of belongings on his broad shoulders, and Viessa grinds it out with the wounded using magic and bandaging.

Finally, the train manages to stop, the woods around you becoming a temporary home for the monsters, those that managed to survive. Triage weeded out the worst cases, sorry bastards in too deep for any real help. Campfires and tents dot the forest, and you face your three men, their faces deep with exhaustion.

Could you have saved more? The million-gold question, suppose, and one not worth wondering over when you really think about it.

“We’re good to go, boys. All of you did well, I’m proud to have you with me.” You smile as they wave their goodbyes and march along the road home. Yawning, Viessa taps you on the shoulder, before jabbing a thumb at Astaroth’s similarly tired form, “We did good tonight, Dick. You might actually have a heart under all that rules-lawyering, eh?”

You stretch out your arms and stifle a yawn yourself, and as you prepare to fire back a similarly witty line, you see the eyes of your companions looking behind you. Turning around you see the tall, suit-clad form of Bartholomew Comfia, advisor to the King and at the moment, looking as shady as possible.

“I agree, you did an admirable job handling this situation, Sergeant.” He says with a sly grin, adjusting his sunglasses, which he happens to be wearing for some reason in the middle of night.

“Bart?” you stutter as your puzzlement grows more and more the longer you think about the situation, “What are you doing here?”

“Had a job I needed done,” he grins, displaying the uneasy sight of perfectly straight teeth, “And it seems like I’ve found the right man.

“What kind of job?” you ask carefully, I mean shit this dude is important and all that jazz, right?

“I need something…delivered.” He says as he pulls out two strange sticks, both glowing but one is a crimson red and the other an ocean blue.

“This little thing here…,” he continues as he lifts up the red stick close to his face, bathing it in red, “I need it brought to the wizard of Chedrostin by dawn.”

You frown. “It’s getting’ awfully close to dawn. How am I supposed to get there in time?”

You don’t like the way his smile widens as you say that, especially not the way he gestures with the blue stick.

“Snap the blue stick when you’re ready to go, and if you’re bringing people, hold hands or be in contact with them before you do it. It’ll fix itself after you do, so just snap it again to come back. I expect great things from you, friend. And, please, don’t snap the red one, ever.”

And with that, he hands you the two sticks before grabbing a little pouch from his pocket and dropping it to the ground. As it hits he Earth, a plume of black smoke appears in his stead, and after the few seconds it takes for the wind to blow it away, you find him gone.

Shady bugger, ain’t he.

You lean back against the booth, closing your eyes as you contemplate just how tired you are, and how much you’d like to be back home. You find two hands on your shoulders, and as you open your eyes, you find a small hand next to a massive one.

“What, did ya think you’d be going alone? I figured you were a tad brighter than that, Dicko!” Viessa quips as she elbows you in the arm, an impact so tiny that you literally have to concentrate to feel it.

“I agree, you were not imagining of travelling by yourself?” Astaroth weighs in with his deeper, baritone voice.

You blush a little, “Well shucks, I didn’t know you guys cared so much. It’s not like I’m some kind of hero or something.”

Viessa jabs you in the collarbone with a grin, “Alright jackass, quit being humble and buckle up! We’re headed to my place!”

“Pretty sure Bart told me I had to get this done by dawn…”

She crosses her arms and pouts like the frilly knife-ears she likes to act out, “Well excuuuuuuse me! If you don’t want to bring nothing along with you, like a weapon, or shit, a fuckin’ drink, then that’s fine with me.”

Valid point, but time is one too, afterall.
