You are Paxious Dromus, once a simple farmer on a planet just off of Iridonia, now a Jedi in training.

Or at least, you will be if you get through these tests.

Currently, you're in a crowd of potential students all watching a giant human by the name of Jorraan charge a Jedi Master.

Jorraan, with his immense height and girth, is just about the only thing you can imagine toppling the Jedi Master Sarif Retsma, who stands with knees slightly bent, yellow saber angled to the ground, and a slight smile on his lips.

As Jorraan begins his charge though, a feminine voice laughs behind you.

"That idiot!" she says, "This is going to be the quickest match all day.

You turn around to spot a ginger girl smirking as she looks at the oncoming clash.

What do you do?

>Stay silent. Just observe.
>"I don't know. Jorraan is a bit of a monster if you haven't noticed."
>"You can say that again. He's bantha fodder."
>"Not like you'll do any better."

You stay silent, electing to focus on really observing what is happening in the match.

Jorraan, yelling all the way, charges with his sword raised above his head. He makes an intimidating picture, but Master Retsma, instead of preparing for the incoming attack, switches off his saber and takes a single step forward. He sags backward slight as if there is too much weight on his heels and slouches the tiniest bit. His hands, one holding the deactivated saber, hang limp.

Jorraan doesn’t slow his approach. He continues his charge and slices downward, aiming for the head.

Retsma falls out of the way, catching himself at the last moment by extending his foot backward. Jorraan follows with two more swings that Retsma seems to accidentally stumble out of the way of.

Some giggles come from the crowd of potential students.

The next few minutes mirror this exchange with Jorraan attacking with a yell and Master Retsma seeming to drunkenly fall out of the way of any possible hit.

You yell out to Jorraan, "Don't give up just yet! You can do this! You just need to fight smarter!"

Jorraan's breath is heavy and ragged. His voice cracks slightly as he yells, "How do I fight smarter?!"

What do you say?

>"Don't attack blindly! Wait for an opening before you charge!"
>"Stay on Defense!"
>"Be less predictable! Try doing something you know he would never think you'd do!"

“Be less predictable! Do something he’s not expecting! And stop attacking every kriffing second. At least wait for an opening before you decide to charge!”

Master Retsma has distanced himself from Jorraan and stands in the same position he’d used to dodge the other attacks.

Jorraan thinks for a minute before getting a determined look on his face. He takes his blade with one hand and stands perfectly still with it at the ready.

Jorraan and Retsma face off, neither moving a muscle for a minute.

Suddenly, without a shout this time, Jorraan begins to charge. However, rather than taking the time to swing his sword, Jorraan runs into Retsma with his shoulder, knocking him off balance. He follows this with a stab forward, which Jorraan responds to by finally reactivating his lightsaber and parrying. The two begin to exchange blows and it turns into a proper match. However, as Jorraan extends his hand for another stab, Retsma twists his lightsaber past his defenses, launching the sword into the air where it lands back in Retsma’s hand.

“Good job taking advice and adapting, Jorraan was it? You’ve got a bit of brain to back up that brawn,” he says as he turns to the crowd to search out the next student to test.

“Well, that went differently,” says the redhead behind you.

“That’s what you get for trying to predict a Jedi Master,” you say, turning to face the ginger girl.

“Yeah, I guess a quick match wouldn’t have been much of a learning experience,” she responds, her short hair bobbing slightly as she tilts her head up for a smirk.

“I’m Paxious by the way. Paxious Dromus. And you are?” you say, with every bit of suave someone with horns on top of their head can offer.

“Ara. I’m Ara Kerrobi,” she says, an eyebrow raised at you.

“You know, Master Sarif was only toying with him. He was using a defensive variation of Ataru that relies a lot less on the Force for movement. If he had even started to use the full form, the only thing that giant would have learned is what Tython dirt tastes like,” Ara says, a look of excitement in her eyes.

She continues her monologue, “I’m surprised that our first test would be Master Sarif considering he’s mastered both the Ataru form and the Makashi form. I guess they really want to test us. Either that, or no one else was available.”

For some reason, she seems particularly embarrassed at this. Her cheeks redden slightly, but she quickly hides it, remarking, “Just what I know from some holovids and the holonet.”

You raise an eyebrow of your own at her reaction, but don’t comment on it. “So, what form was he using on me?” you ask.

“Oh,” she says, “Makashi almost the whole time. He briefly used Ataru in his initial charge toward you, but you forced him back into Makashi very quickly. Ataru is built for using an opponent’s attacks against themselves and that doesn’t work well when you pick your attacks as well as you do. Makashi though, was more or less built to combat basic sword techniques like yours. The fact that you put even a scratch on him is kinda crazy.”

“Thanks,” you say, rubbing the back of your head, just below your horns. “Where are you from anyway?” you ask. Your family wasn’t exactly talkative and you don’t think you’ve heard someone speak this many consecutive words in years.

“Oh, I’m from Alderaan. I live just outside the capital city,” she says, looking as if she’s about to return the question.

“Korrobi!” Sarif shouts, a Twi'lek girl on the ground, holding one arm.

Ara turns to you and says, “I’ll talk to you later, Paxious,” leaving before you have a chance to respond.

“Now,” Master Retsma says to her, “Is this the same Kerrobi family as Kay Kerrobi?”

Ara hesitates to answer, clearly uncomfortable. “Yes…she’s my sister.”

“Well, if you’re half as good as her with the blade, I won’t last 10 minutes!” says Master Retsma, activating his lightsaber and taking a defensive stance as Ara takes the sword.

Ara holds the sword in a clumsy, unconfident way. Her shoulders tense up as she faces the Jedi Master. Her feet are too close together. Her knees are bent in.

It dawns on you that she has absolutely no idea what she’s doing.

From what I can tell, my fan is broken and whenever it starts to heat up, the laptop just shuts down. Luckily my laptop comes with this weird add-on thing that has its own fan in it. It's super clunky, but it's better than the thing shutting off every 20 minutes.

“Ara!” you shout, “Square your feet unless you want to get blown over by a breeze! And hold the sword firmly or you’ll lose it on the first swing!”

Ara hears you but doesn’t seem to react. Master Retsma regards her curiously before approaching slowly and saying, “Ready whatever defense you have.”

He lifts his lightsaber to swing it at her.

Ara drops to the ground as he swings and gives Retsma a resounding kick to the gut. He is caught completely off guard. She drops her sword completely and kicks Retsma’s feet out from under him. While he falls, she grabs his lightsaber-wielding hand and twists it, causing the lightsaber to fall to the ground. Once he hits the ground, she moves on top of his back and straddles it, with his arm pinned there in a position where she could easily break it.

There’s a stunned silence.

From somewhere in the crowd, Jorraan gives a high-pitched squeal.

“Well,” says Retsma from the ground, “This is all very impressive, Ara. But you’ve shown me absolutely nothing of your skill with a sword, which was the whole point of this test.”

“Oh,” she says, her cheeks matching her hair, “Well I don’t really know anything about swords, so just put me in the beginner course.”

“Provided you don’t break my arm, deal,” says Sarif Retsma, looking very uncomfortable and rather embarrassed.

As they get up, he says, “Students, this was clearly a lesson in humility. If you want impressive students, don’t be put off when they impress at your expense.”

This gets a small laugh from the crowd.

“Joire Diante! Your turn, and please use the sword this time!”

Ara returns to stand next to you.

“So you’re a martial arts expert and a nerd?” you say to her, trying not to look too impressed by the fact that this girl just took down a Jedi Master

She looks to the ground and smiles slightly, “I didn’t grow up in the best neighborhood on Alderaan.”

“So how’s Iridonia this time of year?” she asks, changing the subject quickly.

Before you can answer, a large hand grabs her shoulder. Ara turns around to face Jorraan who is smiling like a 10-year-old girl meeting her favorite holovid star.

“Can,” he says, excitedly, “Can you teach me some of that?”

Ara looks absolutely dumbfounded. She’s about to respond when a few ground shuttles pull up.

Master Retsma announces, “Well, it’ll be getting dark soon and I’d rather not have you all be flesh raider stew tonight. We’ll continue these tests at the academy.”

You find yourself in one of the transports with that Miraluka boy. Knowing none of the other students there, you sit yourself next to him.

“You did pretty well,” he says without looking at you.

At first you aren’t sure that it’s you he’s addressing, but after a moment where no one speak up, you reply, “Thanks. And thanks for the help too. That was pretty crazy of you to stand up to a Jedi Master’s Force Push. I’m Paxious.”

He smiles a lazy kind of smile as if he is daydreaming, “I’m Lu Ki Glauss. Just call me Lu though. Oh and about the Force push. Well, I kinda cheat.”

As he says this, another student in the transport says, “Whoa, look out the window! This view is crazy!”

“How did you cheat?” you ask him.

“Well, Miraluka don’t see,” he says, gesturing to the bandages covering where his eyes would be, “We kinda use echo-location but with the Force. It’s almost as good as seeing if you’re untrained and even better if you are.”

You see a smaller student approach Lu as if to poke him. Lu smacks the boy on top of the head before he can get close enough and the boy scurries back to his seat.

“Anyway, getting hit by that Force Push was like taking a shower in the Force, ya know? I could see clearer than I ever had before. So I guess I kinda just knew how to stand it for a bit. For a second, everything just made sense.”

“I wouldn’t count that as cheating,” you say to him. “It’s not like you were trained to resist the Force or were wearing some kind of Force-proof clothing.”

“Is that even a thing?” asks Lu.

“No idea,” you respond, “Either way though, the whole seeing through the Force thing sounds pretty cool.”

“I bet it looked pretty cool too,” says Lu as the transport lands.

You exit to find yourself in the presence of the Jedi Enclave. The ancient nature of the structure is still apparent despite the newer buildings and machines build on and around it.

As you step off the transport onto the ground, Master Retsma calls out, “We’ll be finishing your melee tests tonight before you go to the dormitories. Seriously, what even was that movie? The plot made literally no sense. It's one thing to introduce completely unknown characters and factions slowly and let the backstory fill in through "show don't tell" but that doesn't work if you're also constantly shoehorning in references to earlier films. That, and there seemed to be no build up to the main character's climactic battle, leaving it feeling unbelievable.

I honestly have not established that at all. I was thinking anywhere from 14 to 17. The idea is that the Jedi are getting desperate for man-power and are temporarily training older kids, but probably not adults still.

A big theme in the early game if this quest is going to be "How the Jedi are traditionally supposed to learn" vs "How you're learning now because we're at fucking war with the Sith and don't have time for this shit."
