"Jack."

There's a rhythmic thumping just outside the periphery of your consciousness.

"Jack!" The voice shouts once more.

You fumble around on whatever surface you find your face planted against. It's soft, squishy, and- Are you resting your head on Tuile's chest?
Your head pulls back, and find the white surface of a pillow. Damn, shame.

You are Jack Albator, excellent drinker, tends to get carried away, and then gets carried away somewhere you can sleep off the buzz for the night.

Details are a little hard to comprehend right now. Earlier, Yuuki claimed that she was going to be meeting with an informant to find out the location of a scoundrel who packed up and left town. You wouldn't normally care, but that scoundrel took something very important on her way out.

"JACK! OPEN UP!"
The rude pounding sound erupts from the door once more. If you were more sober; you would say that this must be the rudest door you've ever had the misfortune of meeting.

"Aye, I'll be there. Stop." You command the door to cease its complaining, and you slowly prop yourself up from the bed.

With a sway in your step; the world seems a bit difficult to navigate at this time.
Fortunately, it takes more than a few-
dozen or so? maybe sixteen?
-drinks to keep you down for long!

You unlatch the door, and it immediately swings open!
"Jack!"

A girl with shoulder-length walnut hair is staring up at you. Though the memory is blurred; you do recognize her as one of Biscotti's knights: Pomelo.

"Pomelo? What the heck are ye doin' at this time of night?"
"Jack, it's barely eight."
"Point still stands, what's goin' on?"

"Yuuki left like, four hours ago. She's still not back, and Tuile said she shouldn't be any longer than a couple of hours. I'm worried." Pomelo huffs.

>Yuuki is a grown woman, and a hero. She'll be fine.
>I don't know, that is a little odd, isn't it?
>If she needed our help, she knew where to find us.
>How is Kayda doing?

"I don't know, that is a lil' odd, ain't it?"

"It is!" Pomelo's tail straightens, and she leans in toward you. "So I'm worried!"

"Aye. Well, back to yer post then."

Her tail flops over, and her expression freezes.
"B-b-but it's Yuuki!"
"So?"
"She could be hurt!"

"Lass, it's just been a few hours."
"But she said it would only be a couple!"

"Yuuki is a grown girl, she probably got held up with the person she was supposed to meet."
"But-!"
"After all, there's no reason to think she is in trouble just 'cause the meetin' is taking longer than normal."
"But-!!"

"Furthermore, weren't ye given an order by Tuile? To guard Kayda? How is Kayda doin'?"
"What..?"

Her tail droops further, still.

"Aye said, how is Kayda doin'?"

She blinks, and her mouth falls open. Almost as if she just remembered something really important.
"Go check on Kayda and then get back to yer post, aye'll go look fer Yuuki later."

Immediately, Pomelo zips out of the room. You close the door behind you, and sigh.
Sometimes, it's hard for a man to just catch a break and catch a nap.

You stumble back over to the bed, and collapse.

--

..Things you forgot.
..Things you might be forgettin' about.
Oh right, Camille's pregnant.
Cody's in a love dungeon.
Yuuki is on a mission.
Dorje is somewhere.
Louise is somewhere.
Kayda is in her room.
Anything else?

--

KNOCK KNOCK!
Damn that door, go away!

"Jack! Kayda's not in her room!"

>Bloody hell.

Your head turns into the soft confines of the pillow. The cotton fortress muffles the solitary thought which pops to mind.

"Bloody hell!"

With some more less-choice words; you find yourself out of bed and heading to the door.
Almost instinctively, Pomelo lurches back slightly as the door swings inward.

"What'd ye mean ye can't find 'er?"
"She's not in there! I- I opened the door, and her sheets and blanket were pulled back, and-"

"Ye sure she didn't just, go back to 'er room?"

Oh crap, you just remembered. If she goes back to her room, then she'll find out that her summoner and maid disappeared. She might go try to find them on her own.

"W-well, you said not to leave my post- and-"
"Okay, okay, I'll get up. But first thing's first."

You lean over and whisper into her ear.
"-real quiet-like. go get some backup like some guards or knights or somethin'. I'm not doin' a wild goose chase at whatever time of night it is right now."
"O- okay."

With that, Pomelo turns around and leaves.

You slowly ease over to the chair and throw on your coat. Sadly, it seems like the night is just getting started.

--

"Kitchen?"
"Nothing." The black-haired knight replies.
"Library?"
"Nope." Noel, with her blue hair, searches around. "-But some of the people in there noticed Louise take a book earlier."

"What about Charlotte?"
"She was asking me where Louise was, earlier." Pomelo sighs, "I had to tell her that I didn't know."

So, that's two young heroines missing.
All that's left is the one place you didn't want to look.
Because if Louise is there; that means Kayda is there. If Kayda is there, that means she knows.

"Aye'll be right back."

You take your leave down the hallway, up to the guest bedrooms. This is a conversation you are not looking forward to.

--

Down the hallway, you can already see the door to Kayda's room propped open. Even though it was ordered to be closed and locked to prevent this exact thing from happening.

It's fair to say that Kayda and Louise are inside, and they know. What are you going to say?

>Scold both of them for snooping around late at night and to get to bed.
>Kayda is probably crying right now, so have one of the maids deal with it and go back to bed.

Still here, next post almost done, but it won't be as long.
>>
They woke you up.
Just to go sack her room.

You understand that Kayda wants to know exactly what happened when she was out, but waking everyone up (everyone being you, of course) to do so in the middle of the night just makes you angry.
It's not like she can do anything about it at this time of night anyway. What's she gonna do? Go running around out in the dark to find her summoner of which she has no clue where to even start?

Oh, god don't even tempt fate and think that. She would go and do something like that, just to make sure that you don't get any sleep tonight.

Slowly, as to not alert them to your presence, you place an ear near the ajar door and listen.

"-me anyway."
"That's not true!"
"It IS true!" Kayda yells, "Clair packed up and left with Greta!"
"That's not- no, no, no, Kayda. Clair wouldn't just take your summoner away!"
"YES SHE WOULD!" Kayda screams, "She saw me out of control, and went to find another bodyguard! She's gone! I'm going to die! I'M GOING TO DIE, I'M DEAD."

"KAYDA! Stop! Stop.stopstopstopstop."

There's some crying in the distance, but it's suddenly broken by Louise.
"What are you looking at?!"
"N-nothing!"

You don't recognize that extra voice who just responded.

"Kayda, Kayda. It's time to knew the truth." Louise's voice tenses up, "Clair stole your summoner. She didn't run away because of you, she ran away because Greta was KIDNAPPED."

Silence.
"That's NOT TRUE!" Kayda screams, "CLAIR TOLD ME THAT ONE MORE SLIP-UP AND SHE WAS LEAVING, AND THIS WAS IT, THERE IS NOT ANOTHER CHANCE."
"Kayda STOP, I am SO SICK of telling you this. If you don't want to believe me then I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY!"

>Okay, time to intervene.

"Kayda that's just NOT TRUE!"
"IT IS TRUE! SHE LEFT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ALWAYS DOES AND I-"

"Stop, STOP."
You step into the room while cupping your ears. Two shrill little girls yelling at each other is not what you want to be listening to right now.

"Jack?!" Louise jumps.
"What do you want?!" Kayda huffs, "I'm not wearing any clothes, so go away!"
She's technically wrong; she is wearing a nightgown.

"Kayda, Louise, stop." You put on that scolding tone in your voice. "Clair is a fuck- err, is a damned nasty bit- bitter old cu- cunning evil lady. She took yer summoner with that teleportin' wine. We're tryin' te find her now."

"Then give up." Kayda slowly shuffles to the broken mirror on the floor. "If she's already gone, you'll never find her. It's hopeless."
Slowly, Kayda bends down and picks up the frame of the mirror. A cross-like fracture stains the otherwise perfect image.
"Don't waste your time, just let me wither away." She falls backwards onto the bed, clutching the mirror.

"Kayda, stop SAYING THAT!" Louise stamps her foot.

"I'm sorry for saying the truth."

"Kayyydddaaaaa-"

"You two, stop. Kayda, yer not gonna waste away. Yuuki is hot on her trail right now, I'm sure. Louise, you should be in bed right now."

"I'm not going to bed until she does!" Louise turns around, and defiantly protests.

"Oh, why din' ye say so?"

You immediately walk toward the bed and grab Kayda up onto your shoulder. She squirms and protests, but you maintain a good hold of her.

Louise immediately realizes her error, and turns to walk to the doorway. Unfortunately, she's not getting away that easily.
With a heave, you grab her onto your other shoulder.

"Hey!"
"Let us down!"

"No, I'm goin' to bed and so should ye. If ye dun have a good way to find yer summoner right now, then ye should just stay put for the night."

"W-wait!"
"I'm not going to bed!"

"Yar ye are." You turn around and carry the two brats to the doorway.
-Just to notice a certain black-haired catboy hiding in the corner. He freezes at your presence, and his black tail turns ramrod straight.

"And get lost, you."
"R-right! Right away Mr. Albator!"

Aye, good, he remembered your name.

You walk out of the room, and down the hallway. The whole way having to fight against two very squirmy and uncooperative lasses.
Descending a floor, you approach the other guest bedroom hallway and stop in front of Gallete's suite. You knock on the door with your foot.

"Wh-what? Who is that?" A very confused voice inside whispers.

Though, it's hard to not draw a scene standing here, with two girls slung over your shoulders.

"Just open up." You mumble.

Charlotte opens the door, and immediately stops.
"Jack, what is-"
"No time."

With that done; you head down the hallway and back to your room.

Ech, sorry about missing the last couple votes, couldn't not-sleep forever. For what it's worth, I agree with the results.
>>
You need things after that.
Comforting things.

Like for instance: Drinks.

You push yourself to the bar, but no one is tending to it right now.
Fortunately, you have more than enough experience to help yourself.

Reaching behind the counter, you help yourself to the bottles of liquor.

You don't want to admit it, but you are worried about Yuuki.

She should have been back by now, and that cat-eared girl running around and asking questions isn't making you feel any more safe, either.

Yuuki is a hero, though. One of the things she told you at one time is that she wanted to be more independent and reliable so she can make her own choices.

You suppose that you can't hover over her forever. At the same time, you can't really worry that she may be in dire trouble.
After all, she does have the ring still, and you kept the one that was taken from Kayda.

So, worse comes to worst, you can find her. No need to worry about that.

Oh, you just drank way more than you expected. You suppose that you let your thoughts run away from you, there.
Or, that you're actually way more worried about Yuuki than you'd like to admit.

..Thinking back on it, it's probably the latter.
You are worried about Yuuki.
Ring or not, you should have went with her.
Or at least had someone else go spy on her.

Yes, this betrays the sense of trust that you placed in her, but at the same time it would only be the right thing to do.

You'll contemplate this moral dilemma further after you wake up. As for right now; you can feel the alcohol settling in.

Slowly, you rise from your seat and head toward your bedroom.

Good night knights.
Good night princess.
Good night frantic-looking girl holding a plaid hat.
Good night varmits everywhere.
You enter the room again and lock it behind you. With a plunge, you let sleep overtake you before you hit the floor.
..Wait, that isn't right, shouldn't you have been aiming for the bed?
Ah well, that's probably not important right now.

"Good night, princess."
"Good night, Jack?"

Jack proceeds to stumble past you, into his room, and then closes the door.

You blink, and then continue unimpeded.

You are Tuile di Biscotti; the excellent princess of Biscotti. Right now, you are dealing with a serious problem. One that you were hoping that Jack was sober enough to help with, but you understand fully that he isn't in the right state of mind right now to help.

Which means, solving this sudden problem is up to either you or Cody. Unfortunately, no one can seem to find Cody at this time.
You swear under your breath. It really is a perfect storm of incompetence. Every single hero who can help is indisposed, and that only leaves you with the child heroes.

"Okay, let us go over this again."
"L-lets." The girl kneads the plaid hat in her hands.

"You're saying that your partner found the location of Clair's hideout, but instead of coming back and fetching the guard, she took Yuuki and went on her own."
"Yes, that's right."

"Does she do this, often?"
"No. She's very careful about these things."

You rub the side of your head.
"Do you have any idea where she could have gone?"
"Not a clue."

Now, your head is throbbing.

"Is there a way to send a message to her or-"
"No, there is not." The girl nervously replies. "-But there is a chance we can find out where they're going by finding someone who is staying here. It was our last lead before she had a breakthrough."

Oh, damn it, is it too late to just barge into Jack's room and stay there for the night? You want to go sleep with Jack tonight.

"..PffffFFFFTTT FINE!" You suppress a very loud, audible string of curses in front of the maids and the new guest. "Just, tell me your name once more."
"Detective Jennifer Sous." Her white cat-ears bend backwards at the loud sensation of your frustration. "-But you can call me Jen. Detective Jen."

"Okay, 'Jen', where do we start?" You hope she didn't catch that barb of venom in your voice.

"U-uh, well, I don't know. I don't know who the informant was. I think it was someone locked away in your dungeon."

>Then go away. I'll figure this out myself.
>Oh god damn it, it's him again, isn't it? The king of Konditorei.

"Oh god damn it." You immediately clench your face in your palm. "It's HIM again, isn't it?"
"'Him'?"

"Konditorei's king." You grumble. "We captured him some time back trying to raid Biscotti with some hired mercenaries. When we asked him about it, he blamed everything on Clair."

"So, you think he's trying to take her down with him?" The detective straightens out her hat, and places it over her white-tipped ears.

You grumble, the whole thing stinks and you hate that you're the one having to solve it.

"I don't know what to think." You motion for Bennet to escort you.

--

The dungeon is the same as you would expect. Extremely loud, noisy, dark, and unruly.
It didn't used to be this way. You remember, not even a few months ago, having all of the jail cells nice and cleaned out. Only containing a few bandits or shoplifters. None of them deserving of any kind of long-term confinement.

At one time, there was even discussion with your father of tearing down half of the dungeon to make way for a wine cellar.
Thankfully, you talked the old drunk out of that idea. Your father, old and wise as he may be, has a terrible drinking problem.
Even now, he's probably lost in the wilderness somewhere drunk on his own moonshine.

What a goofball.

Oh! Speaking of which. There's the 'king' now. He's in his own, customized cell. Furnished with books, a shelf, even a couch.
Why anyone bothered to accomidate him is a good question. Frankly, you would rather him be as uncomfortable as possible.

"Oh? Tuile." The King stands up to greet you. "Have you come to your senses and realized the extensive diplomatic error of your ways? Surely, you're keen on allowing me to walk free soon?"

>Go to hell.

"Where did she go?"
"Before I answer that, I have a few demands."

Oh here we go.
You knew this would be too easy.

"-First, this cell. It's quite too small for my studies." He gets a smug, smug smile on his face. "And you know, I really don't like how often your thugs come in here and interrogate me. I don't have the answers to everything."

"You're going to have more than an interrogation on your hands if you don't start telling us where Clair went."

"I'm getting to that, Princess." His smile disappears, "But first, we need to discuss some important things about my living arrangements."

"Jen." You turn to the cat-eared detective. "Please try to talk with him before I order him shaved."
"I'll, uh, I'll try." The meek catgirl steps up.

The king simply sighs at the sight of her.
"Listen, your highness?" Ugh, you wish Jen wouldn't address him as that. "Clair missing is a very big problem."
"I'm aware." He states, flatly.

"So, could you at least tell us where she went? You don't have to do anything else past that."

"I'll tell you where I think Clair may have gone." He pauses, "but first, the princess and I were in the middle of a discussion."

"But I do, you see. I set up a place for Clair to stay sometime back if, in any case, this operation went sour. I suspect she's staying there, now."

"Where is it?"

"The last place I expected anyone to look, Bruschetta."

Bruschetta. The bunny-land.
A place that's almost a week travel to the south, and is considered a collection of villas for rich people.

>I think you're lying.
>How do I know you're telling the truth?
>That's enough, I'm done.

"These generals, who is the best to talk to?"

names, we need names
and directions

Oh here's a quick question, where can we find another of these rings? If Yuuki still has hers that'd simplify things.

You could ask Jack for his.

Writing!
Geez, it's 11 PM! I hope I can get one more post after this before bed.

Oh ok, didn't realize. Let's make a point to do that.

Actually, we didn't need to talk to this guy at all in this case. Maybe.

"That's not good enough." You continue to stare the old man down. "I need locations, and I need names."
"I don't have either."

"Prepare to be shaved."

"No, no, there's a better way to find out than shaving me."

The old man stands up, and then reaches back onto his nightstand.
He turns around a few moments later, and approaches the bars.

"See this mirror?"
It's a small hand-mirror. Unsurprisingly, it has your reflection in it.

"What about it?"
"Clair has one too, but hers is different. For one, hers is three feet across and sits atop a dresser."

"And-?"

"And another-" The king takes his mirror, pointing to the outside of it, "Her mirror is magic, and it was how she conducted her business."

"..Magic?"

"That's right." The king grumbles. "Her mirror was more than an object of vanity. It was a messenger, a board room, even a map of the world. All in one."
"..So what does this-"

"And-" He eyes you through his old, and sinking glare. "-and her mirror was how she communicated with others in her spy network. She had all the command of a general without leaving the comfort of her bedroom."

Bennet, the black-haired knight standing beside you, his ears start twitching. Interrupting, he asks a very important point.
"Excuse me, if I may." He says in his usual quiet demeanor, "If this was such a powerful tool, why did you let the maid have it?"

"I didn't, that mirror was a gift for Greta from her father." He grumbles, "It's not like as if I didn't try to snatch it from his room, either. Unfortunately, I waited until after redskin was summoned to try. Annoying as she may be; she is an effective bodyguard."

You just wish Kayda was around to hear that.

"In any case. I'll be investigating Clair's room."
You lean in closer to the bars.
"If I find anything that you've been holding back from me-"

"Yes, yes, shaved then feathered. Good night, Princess." The king wearily flops into his seat.

--

Clair's room is a mess.
Every cabinet has been ransacked, every drawer taken and toppled.

Even the lampshades that were part of the room are gone! Who does that?! What would she need with lampshades?!

No, no, focus.

You approach the bed, and notice something laying atop.
Gently picking up the wooden frame, four pieces of mirror flop out onto the bed. Each piece a quarter of what once looked like a full mirror.

She knew you would come looking.
And the worst part is: You don't know what to do now that the mirror is smashed.

Well. You don't know what to do, but you know who to call.

"ALIGOOOT! GET ALIGOT! RIGHT AWAY!"

Everyone, sorry about that.
Today was not the day I expected it to be.

But hey, I'm done. It's 1 AM here so I think I'm going to bed.

Let me know what you thought of Today's thread, and I will see you on Tuesday.
