You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LX1x_rZ-T8

Currently, you were leaping out of a C-130 that was practically skimming the ocean surface in order to provide emergency assistance to some Japanese shipgirls in need.

Now, the thing was, this whole thing was quite literally last second, so you had no idea what or how many Japanese shipgirls were present, nor did you even know the numbers or composition of the Abyssal force attacking them, other than it was a lot.

This was going to be fucking great.

The parachute on the LAPES crate finally pulls the crate and all of you out of the C-130 before quickly losing velocity and splashing down into the ocean. You and Portland, being a little lighter than the other shipsgirls, are thrown off the crate and sent tumbling into the water while Iowa, North Carolina, Washington, and Enterprise land on their feet, completely unphased as the crate of peach cobbler MREs quickly sinks into the sea.

Meanwhile, the C-130's engines roar and its nose points almost vertical as the pilot fights to claw as much altitude as quickly as possible. This low, his plane would be vulnerable to Abyssal aircraft and flak. Thankfully, all of the deployed aircraft manage to form a defensive cloud around the transport plane as it reaches a safe distance.

"Is everybody all right?" Enterprise asks with concern, particularly for you and Portland.

"I'm fine, I'm fine!" You assure her as you scramble back up to your feet. "Sweet Pea?"

"Operational." Portland says simply as she gets up and adjusts her glasses.

"Enterprise, what's the situation?" North Carolina asks, getting straight to business.

"Hmmmm..." Enterprise closes her eyes, no doubt "seeing" through the eyes of her planes, using them as scouts. "I see three distinct Abyssal battlegroups, and I think the Japanese shipgirls. Hmmm..."

"I don't like the sound of that." Washington mutters.

"They have a rather large destroyer and light cruiser force chasing down our allies, whose retreat is being slowed by Abyssal air attacks." Enterprise frowns, her eyes still closed. That means there's an Abyssal carrier group somewhere out there. I also see formation of Abyssal battleships supported by heavy cruisers trying to link up with the lighter formation...

"So which one are we gonna wreck?" Iowa cracks her knuckles. "I'm gettin' tired just standing around here!"

>Find the carriers. Without the air attacks the Japanese can safely withdraw.

"Enterprise, can you get into contact with the Japanese shipgirls?" Portland asks.

"No, and I can't get into contact with the plane, either." Enterprise shakes her head. "It looks like the Abyssals have some powerful communications jamming in the area."

"Like at the Falklands..." Portland mutters.

"I can try communicating through them with my planes, but they'd have to get through the Abyssal air group as well." Enterprise points out. "I can have Hornet, Midway, and White Plains' aircraft assist, but I can't possibly refuel and rearm them all by myself..."

"Well then, the simple thing to do is hit their carriers!" You grin. "We can all hit 30 knots right? We can run them down and knock them all out in one fell swoop!"

"I think I can get an approximate location based on their flight paths." Enterprise nods.

"We do that, and they'll see us before we see them." North Carolina warns. "And I guarantee you that battleship formation is going to turn around and try and his us in the back."

"Hey Iowa, you think you, Carolina, and Wash can handle them?" You ask the lead battleship.

"Of course we can!" Iowa winks with a confident grin. "Ain't that right, ladies?"

"It's not the first time." North Carolina shrugs.

"And it won't be the last!" Washington finishes.

"Don't you worry, we'll hold down the rear!" Iowa continues. "You girls go on ahead and show those carriers who's boss!"

"Will do." Portland nods as she fires up her engines. "Come on, Hoel. Enterprise, just stay behind us and manage the air battle."

"Of course!" Enterprise nods. Up above, you can see the combined air wings reforming and splitting off into multiple directions like flocks of birds as they scanned the ocean for the opposing carriers.

"Oh, they already know we're here." Enterprise frowns.

Your radar picks it up first, little dots speeding toward each other and then mixing together in a chaotic swirl. The signature sign of an aerial dogfight. Your optics confirm it seconds later as you can see twisting contrails and machine gun tracers.

"I predict they'll start retasking their air groups to focus on us within two minutes." Enterprise warns.

"Me and Hoel both have solid AA suites. I think we can hold them." Portland assures them.

"First wave incoming!" Enterprise calls out the warning.

Indeed, your radar begins lighting up with dozens of new contacts. Swarms of Abyssal fighters in form of those damn chittering skulls appear over the horizon, and already, flights of Hellcats and Crusaders surge forward to meet them. Gunfire roars and explosions ripple across the sky as fighters from both sides tear into each other.

However, your radar detects more threats, much lower, just skimming over the water.

"Torpedo bombers coming in three o' clock!" You warn.

"I see them." Portland sails into place just off Enterprise's starboard side, her AA guns barking and throwing clouds of flak and tracers into the path of the oncoming bombers.

You take you position on Portland's flank, standing directly between the approaching Abyssal bombers and Enterprise. Her CAP flights were too busy repelling the high flying dive bombers and their escort fighters or scouting to spare any additional planes to intercept the torpedo bombers.

You radar was picking up contacts approaching clear as day, and your cannons and guns immediately swivel in place and begin firing, adding your own firepower to Portland's relentless barrage.

The air in front of you and Portland is thick with tracers and flak as you both of you lay down a punishing hail of AA fire. 20mm, 40mm, and 5 inch shells fly, tearing Abyssal fighters out of the sky and in some cases completely blowing them apart. Planes fall into sea like rain, but they're like locusts. Every bomber you shoot down, another squadron takes its place.

But you do manage keep the bombers at bay, keeping them out of attack range from Enterprise.

However, your radar cues you to a new threat. One squadron of Abyssal bombers appears to have broken off from the main swarm. It looks like they've given up trying to make a suicide run for Enterprise and are instead gunning for the next best target, Portland herself. It seemed like the cruiser didn't even realize they were gunning for her, and she was too focused on the main swarm in front of her to be able to do much about it anyways.

Damnit, Portland has the better AA output. If she's taken out or forced to reposition, it could create a hole in your defense net the Abyssal could exploit.

But if you could knock them out before they could get in range of Portland...

With warning Portland should be able to maneuver around the torps, and better she be forced to reposition while firing than be taken out.

If she can't dodge in time, she might still be able to survive. And harsh as it is to say, if she doesn't, the cold calculus is that she's less of a loss than E.

"Sweet Pea, watch your six!" You grin as loop around behind Portland, playfully slapping her on the butt as you pass. "Or a big mean Abyssal will sneak up on ya!"

"W-what?" Portland blinks in surprise, but her guns keep up their fire. Her eyes then dart to the right for a brief second and she immediately understands the situation. "I can handle things here, Hoel."

You give her a brief, casual salute before spinning around and heading off to intercept the wayward Abyssal squadron.

The Abyssal bombers drop speed for a moment, not expecting to be intercepted like this, but they quickly pick up speed, committing to the attack. There was no turning back at this point.

Your guns swivel and lock into position, ready and waiting.

Your AA guns begin to bark and roar, tearing most of the torpedo bombers out of the sky, sending them crashing into the sea, but there's simply too many of them to handle on your own. Three Abyssal bombers zip over you, so low you can actually see the long and thin torpedoes stowed on their bellies. Your 5-inch cannons immediately swivel to track them, but its too late. The bombers drop their torpedoes just seconds before they're blasted point blank from your cannons.

"Sweet Pea! Incoming!" You scream.

Portland eyes you and the approaching torpedoes and refuses to budge.

"This is fine." Portland grimaces as she shoots down another squadron of Abyssal bombers. "We can't let any of these bombers through."

No doubt she was hoping the torps weren't on target. Or maybe she really was okay being the sacrificial lamb.

You grit your teeth. You know there's nothing you can do to get Portland to change her mind, and those torps were going too fast for you to outrun.

True to her word, Portland doesn't budge until every last bomber cleared from the sky. Unfortunately, that's all the time the torpedoes need.

One of the torpedoes thankfully go wide, but two of them are on target, and you're helpless to watch as they explode directly underneath Portland, briefly obscuring her in a cloud of mist and sweater.

"SWEET PEA!" You scream.

"Portland!" Enterprise gasps, her awareness snapped back to her own eyes after busy managing the numerous air wings in the sky.

You immediately steam up to Portland's location, the mix of oil and blood slicking on the ocean's surface not being a good sign. When the smoke and mist clear, you can see the full extent of the damage.

Portland's right leg is completely gone below the knee. Like, not broken or mangled, just straight off GONE. Her left leg didn't look to be much better, heavily battered and bruised from the shock of the blast. Already, her faeries were swarming out of her Rig to perform damage control, patching up holes opened up in her Rig and sealing her grievous leg wound.

"Nothing a stay in drydock won't fix." Portland grunts as she adjusted her skewed glasses. You can tell she's in really great pain, despite the calm facade she puts up.

"YOUR WHOLE FUCKING LEG'S OFF!" You cry.

"I've had worse." Portland replies simply.

"Why do you have to be like this, Portland?" Enterprise sighs. "I could have handled it."

"Couldn't take the risk." Portland shakes her head and winces as her faeries weld a patch over her leg wound. "We have plenty of cruisers, but never enough carriers."

"SWEET PEA YOU FUCKING IDIOT!" You roar in a combination of rage and despair as you hug Portland and hold her tight. "I-I'm the one whose supposed to do stupid shit! It feels w-weird being the one to chew ya out!"

"I know, right?" Portland gives a pained smile as she weakly returns the hug.

"Portland, what's your condition?" Enterprise bends down. Behind her, the sky was filled with allied planes, meaning that she's managed to seize local air superiority.

"Well, as you can see, propulsion is cut in half, so I'm down to two screws." Portland wiggles her right leg a bit as her faeries squeak angrily in protest. "A couple of my boilers got quenched, too, so I don't see myself getting past 10 knots."

"That's a problem, there's no way you can keep up with us." Enterprise frowns and turns from the direction you all came. Even from this distance, you could hear the thunder cracks of 16-inch cannons firing off in sequence. "I don't think Iowa or the others can come assist, and I don't like the idea of just leaving you out here..."

"I'll be fine." Portland insists. "Towing me will just slow you down."

"And if we leave you alone like this, you'll just be a sitting duck!" You protest, the Abyssals' threats still fresh in your mind.

"Perhaps..." Enterprise frowns. "I hate to suggest this, but my planes have already spotted the enemy carriers. I could stay here with Portland, but that means you'll have to advance alone, Hoel. I'll provide as much air support as I can but my planes will have a longer distance to travel..."

"I can handle it." You declare. "Just point the way."

"Just follow the planes." Enterprise points to the sky, and already, you can see her own Helldivers and Hornet's B-25s already flying off to chase down the Abyssal carriers.

"Gotcha." You nod as you fire up your engines and then nod to Portland. "And keep on eye on this idiot here, will ya?"

"I will." Enterprise giggles.

"This feels so weird." Portland grumbles.

"Well, this is your own fault." Enterprise reminds her.

"Yeah, rub it in." Portland groans.

At this point, you've sailed far enough that their voices fall out of earshot, and you follow the heading Enterprises' attack planes are headed. Soon enough, the presence of the enemy carriers is confirmed when the lead elements of the Abyssal CAP squadrons dive in, tangling with Enterprises' escort fighters. Hellcats, Corsairs, and Crusaders weave in and out with Abyssal skulls while the Helldivers, Skyraiders, and B-25s continue on their attack runs. On the horizon, you can make out four carriers, most likely Wo-classes. There was a small picket of destroyers, but they were spread out to provide air defense and had left holes in the line large enough for you to breach.

Oddly enough, it looked like three of the Wos were staying behind to cover the retreat of the fourth, who was steaming north at full speed.

You decide to sweep around the primary group and chase down the fleeing carrier. You for sure had the speed to do it in a straight line drag race. Plus, with Enterprise's planes in the air, the Abyssal destroyers and planes would be too preoccupied warding them off to focus on you. Well, hopefully.

That's when you see the trio of Wos finally beginning to reposition to physically block your advance. Whatever that fourth carrier was, it certainly seemed to be important to them. However, it looked like you had to to break straight through them-

"Tennōheika Banzai!!!" You hear someone scream at the top of their lungs.

You're briefly yanked out of your battle high when you see a black clad light cruiser with an eyepatch (seriously, what was it with you and encounter ships with eyepatches?) speeding straight towards the Wos. Her clothes were torn and tattered, indicating battle damage, but the glittering katana held high in her hands showed she had plenty of fight in her.

And on her flanks were four black and white uniformed destroyer girls, their little destroyer popguns firing wildly in all directions.

The four Abyssal picket destroyers were basically bowled over. One of the Wos turns to face the oncoming light cruiser, but one brief moment of flashing steel later, and the Wo's left arm is sent twirling into the air.

"Go and get her, squirt!" The light cruiser grins at you. "We'll keep these things busy for ya! It's least we can do for bailin' us out!"

"Um, thanks?" You give a thumbs up and speed past as your unexpected reinforcements tie up the Wos and their escorts. It was just you and target now.

Your radar then pings wildly, indicating that the carrier you were chasing was starting to launch fighters, no doubt to engage you. Was it keeping them in reserve for a moment like this?

You figure that you can just plow through them. You were small and nimble enough that you'd be practically impossible to hit with torpedoes or bombs. You engines roar at full power as you keep up the chase despite the swarms of enemy Abyssal planes diving down on you.

True to your expectations, the Abyssal bombers can't score any direct hits on you with their bombs or torpedoes, as your upgraded engines allow you to juke and weave without losing any significant speed. You steadily begin to catch up to your quarry.

However, that doesn't stop the Abyssal fighters from making gun runs on you as they pepper you under an endless rain of .50 caliber bullets. Despite the best efforts of your AA guns, you can feel the sting of hundreds and maybe even thousands of bullets digging into your hull. Your armor manages to shrug off most of the hits, but an unlucky burst punches through your radar tower, disabling your sixth sense. It was going to be optics only from here on out.

The hit also knocked out your long range radio antenna, so no calling for assistance, either.

At this point, you've gotten within visual range of your target anyways. It looks like the carrier has given up trying to run and has turned to face you.

And you can immediately see that it was no Wo at all. It was one of those high level Abyssal princesses!

"How utterly predictable." The Carrier Princess chuckles over the radio as more and more fighters swarm out of her launch decks. "If you come quietly, perhaps this won't be as painful for you."

You can take this bitch. You know it.

The problem was that you needed to get in close to her, where her precious planes couldn't protect her. She couldn't outgun you otherwise.

Problem was that there was a lot of open water between you and her, but honestly, you really didn't have much other choice.

"Come at me, then." The Carrier Princess says smugly as she beckons to you with her finger.

Yeah, well, she was asking for it, right?

You rev your new engines, the diesel electrics being far more responsive than your steam boilers ever were, giving you an unheard of acceleration which catches even the Carrier Princess of guard. She instinctively turns her turrets on you and fires, cannon rounds splashing all around you, but in her panic and surprise she fails to score a single hit on you.

And this gives you the time you need to draw your bat and swing, striking the Carrier Princess square in the jaw. Her turrets twitch and spin wildly as the shock of the impact causes her to temporarily lose control of her functions.

However, she's not done. Not yet. The Carrier Princess roars in pain in anger with such force it actually pushes you back out of bat range. The Carrier Princess begins to glow an ugly and threatening red and a hot, ominous wind nips at your skin. Up above, her fighters swarm and circle like a massive hurricane, moving faster and faster.

This... did not seem good.

>CRITICAL SUCCESS

Again, you speed forward to close in on her, but this time, the Carrier Princess was prepared. Her fighters descend from the sky in massive tendrils, all snaking towards you. Some kind of mass kamikaze attack? You narrowly dodge as the first tendril crashes down, dozens of Abyssal fighters slamming into the water mere feet away, bouncing sea spray and shrapnel off your hull. A second tendril crashes down right in front you, forcing you to turn hard to port.

The third tendril is a a real curveball snaking and winding along the water's surface like a serpent. You're just barely able to vault over in time as it tries to sweep your feet.

More water splashes around as the Carrier Princess fires her cannons. You're force to duck as a fourth tendril whips right over, clipping the top of your Rig. One second too slow, and you would have been cut in half by it!

Your adrenaline running high, you close in the last few feet. The Carrier Princess' guns swivel to track you, but your bat is faster. You swing it in a massive downward arc, putting all your strength and weight behind it.

The loud CRACK of the impact is so loud, it beats out even the roar of a 16 inch cannon. You can see the Carrier Princess' eyes widen and then pop as the bat slams into the top of her head, practically splitting her skull open. Almost immediately, all of the Abyssal planes in the air come to a dead stop and begin falling like rain.

In fact, the falling Abyssal fighters posed more of a threat to you than the Carrier Princess' attacks, forcing you to sail away out from under the cloud of toppling planes.

The Carrier Princess, meanwhile, slumps to her knees and hits the water face first with a loud splash. You were about to go check on the wreck when you're suddenly interrupted.

"Whoooaaaa!" One of the Japanese destroyers sails up to you, her eyes glued to the downed Carrier Princess. "You really took down Geofons by yourself?!"

"Wow! You're even cooler than Auntie Tenryuu!" Another destroyer chirps.

"Y-you're amazing, nanodesu!" A third one squeaks.

"Good shooting." The fourth one says coolly, giving you a thumbs up.

"Haha! Of course I'm fuckin' amazing!" You laugh smugly.

"Hey! Language, twerp!" You feel a sharp smack at the back of your head, courtesy of the eyepatched light cruiser. "Ya talk pretty rude for a destroyer!"

"Hey, don't do that, Aunti Tenryuu!" The second destroyer whines. "She's cool!"

"Yer saying I'm not, Ikazuchi?" Tenryuu's eyebrow twitches.

"Well uh, you're almost as cool as her!" Ikazuchi corrects.

"But she's not very elephant." The first destroyer huffs.

"Elegant, Akatsuki." The fourth destroyer calmly corrects.

"I know that, Hibiki!" Akatsuki whines.

"M-my name is Inazuma, nanodesu!" The third destroyer politely introduces herself with a bow. "I-it's an honor t-to meet you, Hoel!"

Huh, you guess you shouldn't be surprised that even the Jap ships could recognize you.

"Well, I do gotta admit, it takes some guts taking on a Princess like that!" Tenryuu regains her composure. "Looks like the stories about ya are true!"

"Can you teach us to fight like that?" Ikazuchi says excitedly as she swings a small ship anchor around. "We wanna be the strongest destroyers ever!"

"Y-yes, I want to learn how to fight, too, nanodesu!" Inazuma bows to you.

"W-well, your fighting style may not be eleph- elegant, but it's effective!" Akatsuki concedes, trying to hide her interest.

However, the last one, Hibiki, just stares curiously at you.

"...have we met before?" She asks simply. "You look familiar..."

"HAHAHA I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT." You laugh loudly and totally not suspiciously.

"Well, I'm not sure what we're gonna do about THAT." Tenryuu nods to the Carrier Princess' body. "But it looks like our backup's finally arrived. Late as usual."

You turn your gaze east, where you could smoke billowing in the air from approaching shipgirls. Your radar was still down, so you could only go off optics. You narrow your eyes to see who was approaching. It definitely wasn't your task force, but you see...

The time seems to slow down and your vision goes black and white. Sure, Yamato looked like a real bombshell in her shipgirl form, but all you could see was a terrifying wall of steel and guns approaching you, spitting fire and death in all directions.

"Ah, I see you managed to handle things on your own, Hoel!" Enterprise says cheerfully but weakly as she helps tow the still crippled Portland over, having finally caught up.

Instinct overrides logic, and you immediately scramble over and hide behind Enterprise and Portland, interposing them between you and the super battleship.

"SavemeIdontwannadie!" You squeak.

"Dohohohoho, so the great Hoel isn't so fearless after all, huh?" Portland chuckles.

"Oh dear, that's right..." Yamato sighs and then smiles armly. "I do realize that we did fight each other in the War... but that's no reason not to be friends, right?"

"I... I guess."You say meekly, only poking your head over Portland's shoulder, your face almost as red as Anna's. Fuck, thank goodness she wasn't here to see this!

"That's good! We're allies now so there's no need to be afraid of each other!" Yamato says sweetly. "How about, when we get back to base, I make everybody hamburgers? I've learned the best way to get a destroyer's heart is through their stomach!"

"That... doesn't sound half bad." You concede.

"Then it's decided!" Yamato smiles.

"Yaaaay!" Akatsuki, Ikazuchi, and Inazuma cheer. Hibiki just nod with approval.

"Hey, well, if yer cooking, I can't refuse!" Tenryuu laughs.

"Your cooking is pretty awful, anyways." Hibiki says.

"Jeez, that's cold, Hibiki." Tenryuu groans as Hibiki's sisters laugh.

Hell, even you can't keep yourself from laughing at that, and even Portland gives a stupid grin. Maybe these Jap shipgirls weren't so bad.

"Heeeeeeey!" You hear Iowa call out. You turn to see her, North Carolina, and Washington coming up to link up with you all. Iowa of course is waving enthusiastically, all three of them beat to hell, as was common with battleships. "Holy shit, is that you, Yams?!"

"Iowa!" Yamato's face brightens even more. "It's been what, a year? Two? I see you've gone through a wardrobe change, too!"

"Ahahahah, yeah, well, it got kinda embarrassing wearing that old uniform all the time." Iowa laughs nervously.

"Really? I though you looked very cute in it!" Yamato insists.

"Really now...?" It was Iowa's turn to blush furiously.

"Well, now that we're all here, how about we return to base?" Yamato suggests as a JMSDF helicopter appears over the horizon to pick you all up. You also note a number of black, unmarked ones just behind it, no doubt to recover Geofons' corpse at Vahlen's behest.

You had a feeling staying in Japan was going to get real fucking weird real fast.
