You are Tony Starbrine, Meister at the DWMA for all of a few days, and right now, you're watching someone you just met take on a Kishin Egg for the first time.

ARCHIVE OF PREVIOUS THREADS:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=DWMA%20Quest

I want to take a moment to apologize here. I wanted to start this thread last night, but I took a nap that was supposed to take an hour and a half... and ended up with me sleeping until about an hour ago. Two twelve-hour shifts in a row will do that, I guess. In any case, we'll get the ball rolling with our first chance to die horribly!

You peer over the edge of the building, watching Akemi intently. You were sent here to learn how to hunt these things, so you might as well pay attention. You can feel Kia focusing as well, through your connection.

Akemi lunges forward, bringing Daisuke, transformed into a crowbar, in a wide diagonal arc aiming for the misshapen creature's head.
What did she call the thing? Dahmer, like the cannibal? Odd...
The bloated figure brings an arm up with unnatural swiftness, catching the brunt of the strike on it's forearm, before lashing out with the other arm, knocking Akemi back. She slides across the pavement, dragging Daisuke to slow down faster.

"This bastard is faster than he looks. All right, new tactic!" You can hear Akemi's voice from here. She launches herself at the monster again, but from much higher, flipping once and bringing the crowbar in a hammer blow at Dahmer's head.

Of course, the monster blocks the strike, similar to before, but Akemi is ready. She hooks the clawed end of her weapon into the beast's arm, using her momentum to fly in a sharp curve into it's back, and drives her foot against it's spine. You can almost feel the impact from your perch, a sickening CRUNCH filling the air. The hooked end of the crowbar tears through muscle as the Kishin Egg is launched into a wall. You can see the spot on it's back where Akemi hit it.

"See that? That's what you can do with just your own wavelength! Now, let's kick into high gear! Soul Resonance!"

You can see Akemi adopt an almost ninja-like stance, putting two fingers up in front of her nose, and holding Daisuke out horizontally. Kia mutters, "I wonder if that's just for show, or if the pose helps?"

Might want to ask about that at some point. Could be useful.

You can see what appears to be green electricity start coursing through and around Daisuke, until he suddenly SHIFTS into a new form: He is still the same shape, but the flat end of the crowbar now has what looks like a wicked set of spikes that point inward, like... fish hooks?

Akemi points this end towards Dahmer, who is turning to face her, finally. It's arm is torn to shreds in one place, and it seems to have trouble standing upright...

You feel something is about to happen. There, in the corner of your vision, behind Akemi. Something is moving.

You aren't letting Akemi get ambushed like this. Before you realize it, you are sailing down onto the pavement behind Akemi, concentrating your wavelength into your feet to absorb the shock of landing. You barely feel the impact, a small part of your brain notes. Must be getting better at this boost thing already.

You swing Kia as you hit the ground, almost like a baseball bat, and can feel her instinctively respond, increasing her speed and force...

Your timing is nearly perfect. Kia's spearhead tears through monstrous flesh, and the force of your swing deflects the shape into the air, letting the light hit it and revealing it's form. You see what looks like some kind of goblin, greenish skin and body hair covered by a crude cloak. Its face is twisted into a grinning slasher smile, though you can see pain in its eyes. There's a deep gash in its chest, and a dark fluid is already staining it's clothing.

Akemi speaks up. "Shit! There was two?" She glances back at you. "That was a good reaction. I promised I wouldn't let you fight, but there wasn't supposed to be two enemies. We'll call it a wash." She grins, then continues. "I'll finish this one off. Hold the other here, but don't underestimate it. I'll help finish it as soon as I can!" She turns back to Dahmer, who is seemingly... popping its back into place again, with sickening grinding noises.

Your attention is brought back to the goblin Kishin Egg, who has landed in front of you. You can hear a quiet, high-pitched "kishishishishi" coming from it.

"Tony, be careful." Kia sounds nervous. If she could move herself, she'd probably be shaking.

Actually, I should rephrase. I'm ignoring rolls under 20, but they still count as one of the three rolls I take. If you, in theory, rolled three rolls of 20 or less, you'd still have a negative outcome, but you would still have a better result than rolling three 20s.

You take a second to reassure Kia. "We're not doing anything dumb here. We're waiting on Akemi to come help. Just not gonna let it escape."

That seems to calm her down a bit. "Okay, let's go then!"

You dart forward, striking at the goblin's center of mass. It manages to roll to your left, out of the way, and tosses something at you. You drive Kia's point into the pavement, stopping you short as the item-you see it as it passes, a dagger- sails in front of your face. You pull Kia back up, closer to your body, ready to deflect anything else thrown at you. The goblin obliges, tossing two more blades, but you manage to parry one, the other not aimed well enough to hit you anyways. That wound you gave it is definitely affecting things.

You hear Akemi shout behind you, and then there's a sound like a chain pulling tight, followed by a wet crunch. You can feel Akemi's wavelength from here. She must be about to deal the final blow.

You dash forward and to the side, remembering your spar with Steven and Shinobu. Instead of thwacking with Kia's haft, however, you strike at the edge of your range at the goblin's leg, tearing through it and dropping the creature to a knee.

You can see it thinking behind that frozen smile, trying to figure out how to get away. It knows it is outmatched.

You don't have time to activate Resonance, because, like Akemi, you'd have to take a moment sitting still, and the goblin would surely run off.

You lock eyes with the monster, daring it to look away.

It glares back over those sharp teeth.

You glare harder.

You see those yellowed irises flick over towards a nearby street, just for a second.

You grin wolfishly, and slowly start circling the bloody Kishin Egg, cutting off it's escape.

You see the grin on the monster's face fade slightly. It isn't getting away. It flings another dagger at you, but you spin Kia skillfully, dropping the blade into the dust at your feet, and keep moving.

You can see Akemi now. She's in front of an evaporating mass, shining with a purplish light. After a second, all that is left is a small purple orb, pulsing and shivering in the night air.

"Well done, guys!" She walks quickly to the opposite side of the goblin. "Looks like you trapped this one pretty good. I should end it's suffering."

She holds Daisuke out straight, with that wickedly hooked end pointing directly at the goblin.

"Your soul has been judged! DIE!"

Daisuke's end separates from his main body, the hooked head attached by a chain. It flies through the air as though fired by a gun, and pierces the goblin's back.

The goblin makes a strangled noise, and evaporates, leaving behind a similar, but smaller, purple orb.

Akemi smiles at you, and Daisuke changes back. "Seriously, that was pretty incredible for a pair of newbies! You fought well, didn't take a hit, AND kept your head on straight, not taking any silly risks! You'll be top students for sure!" Daisuke goes to retrieve Dahmer's soul.

"Kia, you all right?"

The small island girl changes back into a human. "Yeah... I'm okay. That was really tense, though! I've heard so much about students not coming back from their first missions... I'm just so glad you're on top of things, Tony."

You think about what she said for a second, realizing there was no innuendos. She must be serious, then. You put a hand on her shoulder, leaning down to look her in the eyes. "Why do you think I took things so carefully? That guy could have killed us. I don't handle danger lightly."

You straighten up and look at the goblin's soul, floating like some weird Halloween decoration. "So who gets this one?" you ask.

Daisuke points to you. "All yours, bro. You might have saved Akemi's ass when you jumped off the roof. Least we can do, really."

You nod, then go to grab the soul. It feels slightly warm and springy.

You see Kia staring at it.

You hold the soul out to her, suppressing the urge to tease her. Plenty of time to do that, of course. You'll have to do this another 98 times.

"Down the hatch?"

Kia grabs the purple orb, still with her eyes locked on it. She seems unsure, but she opens her mouth and shoves the thing in... and starts to chew.

She manages to get the whole thing down in one gulp. She looks uncomfortable for a moment, then her expression changes to one more of curiosity.

You're curious, yourself. "What's up?"

"Well, it was weird. At first, it felt like swallowing a large wad of gum, but then it just kinda... dissolved? I can still feel it there, if I try really hard, but otherwise it's gone."

"What did it taste like?"

She furrows her brow. "Like... not much, really. It had shape and texture, like I said, similar to chewing gum, but... It wasn't bad, just really weird." She looks up at you, smiling a bit. "I'm sure I'll get used to it, though!"

You feel... something. Something like eyes on your back, little insects of anxiety crawling up your spine. You're being watched by something that is hunting you.

You've felt this before. You stole a wallet once, from a very big, very angry man. He had chased you down, but you escaped... until the next day, when he found you, stalking you until you were alone and beating you half to death.

You spin around, eyes searching, and you see it... a dark shape in the sky. It looks humanoid, sitting on a thin platform of some sort.

You see it wave, then descend into the city.

Kia tugs your arm slightly. "You okay? You look like you've seen a ghost..." She's concerned.

"Yeah... yeah... I'm all right. I think." You involuntarily shiver as the feeling of being watched passes. "Hey, Akemi, Daisuke... I think I saw something in the sky. It was watching me... and it waved, before dropping into the city."

Daisuke's perpetual smile drops immediately. "Dude, what did it look like. Was it on a broom?"

Thin platform... yeah, that might be a broom. "Probably?"

Akemi balls her hands into fists. "Fuck! God fucking shit fuck. That explains why there was two... Kishin Eggs don't work together like this."

Daisuke puts a hand on both you and your partner's shoulder. "Look guys, we need to call Lord Death. Guess we can use this as an excuse to teach you. Come here."

He leads you to a nearby window and breathes onto it, fogging it up. He then writes out numbers: 42-42-564.

He explains "Lord Death has a sense of humor. In Japanese, this is pronounced 'shini-shini-goroshi' which translates to 'death death murder'. Anyways, you write it, then place a hand on the window and concentrate your wavelength..."

The window suddenly shimmers, and you can see into the Death Room. Shinobu is standing with him, but a ways away.

"Heya, hi, how's it going! Daisuke, what can I help you with?!" The deity is cheerful, as always.

"Daisuke reporting in, the job is complete, with a bonus! Two for one!" He smiles a little. "Of course, that's part of the problem."

Lord Death leans to the side, looking past the three of you at Akemi, still swearing up a storm in the distance. "I take it there's a Witch sighting, based on Miss Akemi's... behavior."

Daisuke nods, his smile disappearing. "Tony here saw one in the sky, probably on a broom. I'm sending them home now while we take care of this. We'd like backup, as well."

Lord Death nods. "That would be wise, indeed. Stay hidden until I can get Satoru on the scene. Now, can I speak to the younger students privately for a moment while you calm your wife down?"

Daisuke chuckles. "Not my wife yet, but I'll try." He walks off.

Lord Death sighs. "So, you two fought a Kishin Egg. I saw how you handled yourselves, and I must say, I'm both impressed at your cool head, and glad that you prioritized safety above all else. There's a time and place to let loose, but your first fight is not it. Full marks."

"Thanks, I guess. Not used to praise." You scratch your cheek a little. "About that witch..."

"I want to stay and help. I know we're still new at this, but... if this is a witch, they're going to need it."

Lord Death can't seem to move his face/mask/whatever it is, but you can swear you see it frowning. "You do realize how dangerous this is? A single witch is more than a match for most three-star students, and you're just a few days into your first year."

You don't back down. "Yeah, but I can still help. I'm not going to challenge her to single combat or anything, but... I can't just leave those two here."

Lord Death leans back, looking upwards. "Hmmm. I'll let you stay on two conditions."

"Okay? What are they?"

"First, you will not hesitate to obey any order Daisuke or Akemi gives. If they tell you to stab them yourself, you'll do it. They have a plan. Of course, this goes out the window if you suspect a spell is influencing them."

Lord Death points at you. "The second, is that you are forbidden from using your... ability. I know you've kept a lid on using it before, but we don't want any unexpected developments. I don't know how the Coven would use the knowledge that one of their blood is in Death City as a student."

"Kia, you okay with this?" You look down at her. She looks worried, but nods. "I don't want Daisuke and Akemi hurt either. They've raised too many death flags for us to leave them here."

"Deal, then. Oh, before you go, how COULD the 'Coven' or whatever use that knowledge about me?"

Lord Death shrugs. "They might find your relatives, try to recruit you, capture you to experiment on, or just plain target you any time you leave the city. I don't want to risk any of it, do you?"

He waves. "All right, be safe! We'll be observing, and Satoru is already en route! Hold out until then!"

The window goes dark.

Kia clings to your arm. "Why are we being idiots like this?"

You shrug. "I don't like this. I'm not leaving friends alone, even if we just met them."

You head back over to Akemi and Daisuke. After a little convincing, they believe you when you say Lord Death agreed to let you help.

"Okay then. I want you two to head back to that cafe from before and wait. It's a more populated area, so you won't get ambushed. Daisuke and I will be scouting from the rooftops until Satoru arrives, and then we'll find the witch with his sensory abilities."

You open your mouth to protest, but stop. You agreed to listen to them. You instead nod, and you and Kia walk back to the cafe.

As you near the street where the cafe is, a local man forcibly smacks his shoulder into yours as you pass, knocking you back slightly.

"Wot? You fuckin Americans, thinking you own the place? I should bash your 'ead in for that." He sounds slightly drunk.

I will say that I wouldn't have given the option if I didn't think Tony would have a chance to respond this way. He's been alone and without parents most of his life. These are two likable mentor figures who Tony KNOWS will be risking their lives just by staying in the city. Plus, he's feeling confident after wrecking Steven a few days ago and Goblin just now. Just know that he doesn't think he'll be fine here, he just doesn't want to sit back and let people he likes get killed.
>>
Ignore might be read as disrespect. A bit of kissass might get him to leave us alone and it'll keep our profile low... but the vote seems decided.
>>
You ignore the intoxicated man, trying to walk around him.

He steps into your way. "You fuckin DEAF, mate? Don't fuckin walk away when I'm talkin to you..."

You frown slightly as you realize he isn't going to let you pass... then an idea hits you. You wrap an arm around Kia's waist, pull her close, and leap over the man.

You land lightly on the other side of him and keep walking, letting Kia find her footing first.

"The fu- what was in that pint?" The drunk man seems to be at a loss, and doesn't follow.

You reach the cafe without further incident.

"Tony, if I didn't know better, I'd say you try too hard to look cool."

You smile a bit. "I don't care how I look. I wanted to get past that guy, and he wasn't worth putting through a wall."

Kia leans against you. "Yeah, and that's how I know this whole 'cool streetwise punk' thing isn't just an act to attract girls."

You chuckle. "Course not. Why would I want to attract MORE annoyances to my life?"

The cafe is closed, but there are still people sitting in some of the chairs. A woman by herself, writing in a notebook... a young couple, discreetly pulling at each others clothing... a man in a suit, looking disheveled and drinking an energy drink. Idly, you let your vision slip over to see their souls...

You see four blue flames, as you expected. You relax and let Kia lay against you, ignoring her elbow jabbing you over your small insult.

"So, fancy meeting you here." The voice is friendly, but devoid of warmth. And it comes from the table behind you.

You bolt up, craning your head around to see who said it.

There is a girl. She is young and pretty, with reddish hair. However, the look she is giving you is... piercing. It almost reminds you of Asuka's laser glare, but this one is more curious.

You try to see her soul... and see nothing. A blank space. What is this?

"I wanted to speak with you, Tony. You caught my interest earlier, and it would benefit all of us if you'd at least hear me out." She glances at Kia. "I hope you're more level-headed than your father."

Shit. This is a witch. The one you saw. And she snuck up on you. You grip the armrest of your chair. You could try to attack, but Kia has to transform, which would give her time to strike first. You could leap forward yourself, but... you don't know what she's capable of. Also, fighting here puts the other people at risk.

Shit. Shit shit shit.

She inclines her head slightly. "My name is Layla. Pleased to meet you."

Kia is frozen against your arm. She looks to you, waiting for you to make a move. She realizes how vulnerable she is like this.

>"All right, let's talk."
>"We should take this conversation somewhere else."
>"My friends are looking for you. You'd do well to leave before they find you."

>>
You tense up. For a moment, you're about to have Kia transform, but you remember the people next to you. The man in the suit and the couple are staring at you. You try to relax a little.

"All right, let's talk."

Layla sits at your table, across from you. You feel a bit confused about what she said regarding parents.

"When you mentioned parents..." you begin.

Layla motions towards Kia. "Her parents. I've had several run-ins with them, and they just don't want to talk at all. Just 'AAAAH A WITCH' and then they make with the slashing and chasing and... it's a pain. They should be glad I'm so nice." She smiles. Kia is basically vibrating in anger next to you.

"I see. Well, you have our attention. What do you want? Keep in mind, our friends are getting backup."

The witch waves dismissively at you. "Yes, I know all of that, death upon me and my house and so forth." She pulls a small flask out of her pocket and unscrews the lid. "Mind if I have a drink here? It's been a hell of a night."

"Uhhhh..."

"Great." She takes a huge swig. You faintly smell whiskey. "Look, you took down Hobbs. That little bastard has been running around here for a while now, making things hard on me. He's always got an escape plan. Thing is, he charged in on Dahmer's fight. What sort of street rat does that?" She levels her gaze at you.

"He doesn't. Where are you going with this?" You frown slightly. She should just get to the point.

"Well, exactly. Someone is at work here in London, and I don't like it. So, I'm giving you a chance to help both of us here."

Kia finally calms down enough to talk, though you can hear the fire in her words. "How are we supposed to do that, witch?"

"Easy. I want you two to work for me for a bit. Not overtly, but quietly. Convince Lord Death to pull his men out of London for a single day, and I can clean up the mess that's forming."

"So what exactly do we stand to gain from letting you control the city?" You can't read this girl. It unsettles you.

She takes another drink. "No more Kishin activity in London. No more lives lost, no more students at risk."

>"I'll do it."

"Why are you asking me specifically, here?" You really don't trust this witch. "I'm a brand-new student. What kind of pull do I have?"

Layla smiles. "Because you're unattached. You just joined the school. You don't have family here. You can make an unbiased decision." She leans back. "If I thought anyone else would listen, I'd ask them. You're all I have, really."

"Okay, but I can just call up Lord Death and have you ask him directly..."

Her smile fades. "Do you not care whether Lord Death trusts you?"

You pause. "What do you mean?"

"We both know what it would look like. 'Oh, Lord Death, trust this witch I just met, disregard the fact that I'm descended from one!' Really now."

You're stunned. "H-how..."

She holds up a hand. "We can see things, too. You could say... I knew your family, long ago."

>>
>>776278
Us letting her talk to death is not us caving, we're passing the decision up to our much more knowledgeable superior, and not disrespecting a witch who could have useful information.
>>
>>776282
The fact we're even having a conversation with her is rather questionable. We should have just ran and raised enough of a ruckus for the others to come over.

>If you still don't want to talk to him, I cant make you anyway.
>>
>>776294
We're a first year student. She completely outclasses us and was able to get within literal feet of us and strike up a conversation before we even realized she was there. Running away wouldn't have gotten us very far. Choosing to speak with her was the safest decision.
>>
>>776300
Except we almost outran a three star meister after stealing their death scythe. That was before we were able to use our soul.
>>
Change >>776268 to

>"All right, I accept."

We can just alert lord death, why do we need to stay true to our word with a freaking witch. Plus, we're a street rat it's not like we haven't lied and stolen before.
>>
>>776309
We stole their demon weapon, not a death scythe, and we got the drop on them, completely different situation than a witch sitting straight in front of us with probably no qualms about killing.
>>
>>776318
I don't think it was ever expanded on whether the weapon was a demon or death class but considering the teachers reaction the meister was high level.
She doesn't look like she's ready with no weapons drawn and sitting in place.
Assuming she has no qualms about killing we should be even more prepared to get the fuck out the moment we decline or ideally before doing so.
>>
>>776338
Even if the meister was high level, its highly unlikely they were wielding a death scythe. Those aren't exactly everywhere.
This witch survived an encounter with a death scythe herself, I highly doubt she needs weapons to blow us away with some magic. The only reason we're still alive is her good graces, she snuck up on us perfectly; let's try and humor her and wait for backup.
>>
>>776355
And we're best at running away and want to have the initiative if things get ugly.
>>
>>776366
Shit forgot the second part.
How would the backup even know she's here? Death doesn't really have a way to contact anyone without one of those weird Deathphones Kid had. The only people that are supposed to be close enough are Daisuki and Akemi who were given orders to hide until Satoru arrived and if she's using Soul Protect she's as invisible to them as she was to us.
>>
>>776381
>have initiative
Yeah we can run away while she's talking to death if it comes to that. And that also solves the problem of how help will know we're here; once death talks to us, he'll let akemi and daisuke know for sure.
You really think we're fast enough to just run away from a witch? With Kia in tow? Talking to her IS the safe option
Anyway it looks like the vote will sort this out so we'll see how this goes
>>
>>776393
You're assuming she'll let us call Death.
>>
>>776406
Fair, if she doesn't then i'm totally down for flipping the table and running like hell
>>
>>776412

>>
I'm back.

Looks like calling up Death wins out.

Also, it's good that you're wary. Like, really good.
>>
"I... would still rather you talk to Lord Death. No offense, you've been reasonable, and I appreciate that, but there's no way I can think of to get him to pull everyone out."

Layla puts a hand to her head, sighing. "This is why I had whiskey. All right, let's call the big guy."

You and Kia get up, letting the witch walk in front of you. As soon as you're out of sight of the cafe, Kia transforms. Layla doesn't react.

You find a large empty shop window, and write the numbers on the glass. A jolt of energy from your palm, and the Death Room shimmers into view.

"Hello, hiya, how's it hanging! Tony! Back so soon? He tilts his head as he notices your companion.

"I'm not a part of this, just connecting the two of you so you can talk." You step back, letting Layla have space.

"Greetings, Lord Death. I'm Layla. I would like to ask for you to take an action that would benefit us both."

Death peers out of the window at her. Uh... huh. You're a witch." There's no question here, just a flat certainty.

"Yes, I am."

"And my cute little students aren't in pieces because?"

"I'm not that sort of witch, m'Lord. I prefer to keep those I find interesting alive."

Death straightens up. He rubs the bottom of his mask as through stroking a beard. "Interesting, are they? I'm sure that's not all."

"My business is my own, Death. I just don't want my city to die." Layla seems to be growing impatient.

Death turns to look at you. "How did she end up finding you? I thought you were supposed to listen to Akemi and Daisuke..."

You shrug. "We did. We tried to stay out of trouble, but trouble came to us. Honestly, it's kind of what happens to me all the time."

Death chuckles. "I can see that you'll bear watching a lot in the future. Now, Layla, mind telling me what you have to offer?"

"Get your agents out of the city for 24 hours. In that time, I will eliminate the witch who is crating Kishin Eggs on purpose and controlling their movements."

Death hesitates. "And how can I trust that you'll just let my people back in?"

Layla smirks. "You can't, I guess. However, if you do not, I can't operate freely, and more people will die in the next month to feed more Kishin Eggs. You'll have half your student body here full-time eventually."

Death lifts his finger. "I could just have my Death Scythes come and purge the city, including you."

"Yes, but the witch is crafty. She's able to sense your Death Scythes almost as well as you can, and she is very adept at hiding. You should know... she's my big sister, Charlotte. I believe you and her are VERY aquainted..."

That smirk on her face... no fucking way.

>>776727

Ah, there wasn't much of a change, for most people yet.

Akemi and Daisuke think you'll make Kia a Death Scythe someday.

Layla thinks you're not worth respect, but you're strong and interesting.

So she was telling the truth about finding us interesting then. Huh

On an unrelated note, is Layla a Clapton fan?

>>
You stare at the witch blankly. She didn't just imply what you think... did she? Can Death even do that?

You can feel Kia blush suddenly.

Death remains as impassive as ever. "I don't think this discussion is appropriate to have in front of my students, Miss Layla. I won't pull my people out of London, so you'll have to do your thing under the radar."

Layla's smirk disappears. "Then you're dooming dozens of people. Maybe hundreds."

Death is silent for a while. "People die. It is unfortunate, but we do all we can to prevent the greatest loss of life possible. I can't trust that letting one witch run amok is better than another." He leans in slightly, and you notice his hands are balled into fists. "I may have known your sister, but I don't know you, Miss Layla. You could be much worse."

The witch grits her teeth. "You're making a mistake, Death. You'll see that soon enough."

Death looks back to you and Kia. "You two should head to the airport now. I don't believe Miss Layla here will hurt you, but you shouldn't test her patience. You will return on the same plane Mr. Satoru arrives on."

>"Sir, maybe the witch has a point."
>"Don't have to tell me twice. Be back soon." Leave for the airport.

Hmm... I really do feel like Layla can be trusted, in this case at least, not to try and screw Death over.
>>
>>778460
>"Would Daisuke and Asuka be open to working with Layla? If she's so concerned about the people, I'm sure they wouldn't mind."
>>
>>778469
It was Akemi, not Asuka.

And I'll gently remind you that, as soon as a witch was mentioned as a possibility, she started swearing non-stop and stomping/pacing around the area while you talked with Death. She probably went on like that for a good few minutes.

Just saying.
>>
I think that we should make a point of not distrusting witches simply because they are witches. If they are beyond redemption, then so are we.

Layla looks at you strangely. Guess she didn't expect you to stick up for her?

Death puts a finger to where his mouth would be, if he had one. "Tony, I appreciate what you're trying to do here, but things aren't so simple. If you would come check in with me when you return, I'd be happy to explain a little."

"Tony, maybe we should go. Lord Death seems... way more serious than normal." Kia sounds worried.

"All right, I give. I'm heading out. See you soon, Lord Death."

Layla watches you go. You still wonder a bit about what she said regarding knowing your family... Either that witch in your family wasn't that long ago, or she's much older than she seems.

Kia transforms back, but isn't really talkative. You both find yourselves at the airport fairly quickly. You find seats overlooking the small airfield you arrived on. You're struck by how tired you feel, suddenly. It must be close to two or three in the morning here, and with timezone shenanigans, you've missed at least some sleep. Huh, get a schedule for three days and you already feel the effects of not keeping it.

Kia looks tired as well, but she's not quite as shaky as she was around the witch. You could always see if she knows anything about that situation back there, or just enjoy your last bit of privacy together.

>"I'm glad you're okay after all that, Kia."
>"So, did Layla really imply that Lord Death... you know?"

You look at the small tanned girl. She's been through a lot today. You might be used to violence and the struggle to survive, but she... well, she might have been preparing for it since she can remember, but you don't really know what it's like until you're face to face with real danger.

"Hey Kia, I'm glad you're okay after all that."

She looks up at you. "Yeah, it was... well, I'm happy we got through it safely."

You lean back, stretching a little. "I'm gonna sleep for like two days when we get back though. I'm exhausted."

Kia giggles a little. "Using your wavelength like that might not feel tiring when you first start, but it gets pretty draining. There's stories of people in the old days fighting dozens of Kishin Eggs, only to die after the adrenaline caught up with them. It's also why we use partners like this. If we bounce the energy back and forth, we can amplify it without drawing on too much."

Huh. Guess that makes sense. Whoever thought of it was pretty smart. "So, did Layla really imply that Lord Death... you know? With a Witch, no less?"

Kia immediately flushes red. "I mean, I don't know if he even has the.... uh... equipment? No one knows what's under the robe... For all we know he's chiseled as a statue under there."

You chuckle. "Imagine a model's body with that goofy voice."

Kia giggles, but her blush is still there. "Honestly though, if he could, I can't imagine what sort of kids he'd have. I mean, the guy is always working, never sleeps... he'd be a weird parent to have. His children would have all sorts of issues."

You decide to tease her a bit further. "So, are you gonna imagine a muscular dude in that cloak every time you see him from now on?"

Kia shrinks down. "Noooooo. No I'm nooooot."

"Good, because you wouldn't want anyone to get jealous."

She glances back to you. "Like who, exactly?"

Hm.

>"Like me, of course."
>"Shinobu. She's totally into you."
>"I bet Steven has a secret shrine to you in his closet."

"Well... there's Shinobu, of course. She's totally into you." You grin and wait for the steam to start- there it is.

"N-n-no she isn't! She's not... I mean..."

The poor girl is starting to melt down, so why not push it further?

"Hell, you probably have a fan club among the boys by now, and probably a lot of the girls too. Can't disappoint them. It's a shame, if you're the school idol you can't date anyone or you'd lose your purity appeal..."

Yep, she's broke. Good job, Tony. You're truly the master of vague innuendo and implied lesbianism. Well, either that or Kia is weak to being bullied. It's fun either way.

You let her stew for a few minutes, feeling the heat coming off of her face through your clothes. It's like being next to an adorable space heater.

"T-tony? What do you... um... think of Shinobu?"

"Huh? That's kind of out of nowhere..." You reply.

Kiaruns a hand through her short hair. "Well, you brought her up, so I'm asking you."

I don't think that Shinobu has told us why she volunteered for the advanced class.
>>
"Why, worried I'll be stolen away from you? I didn't take you for the jealous type, Kia."

Kia sputters for a moment before jabbing you in the ribs with her elbow. Ow, that one hurt a little.

"But really, she's cute. I don't know about anything else, yet. Depends on how things go."

Kia leans against you. "Yeah, I know. I just wonder about things like this too much. I should relax more."

You pat Kia's head. "Don't relax too much. It's fun to make steam shoot out of your ears."

You take another elbow jab, but it's worth it.

Soon, the plane arrives, and you climb in with Kia. You end up dozing on the plane, slumped against your partner, with vague dreams of Layla talking to you about... something. It's all very hazy.

You manage to focus, despite being tired and still somewhat unsure of what this is. You still can't make out what she's saying... but you realize she isn't talking to you. She's talking to a large dark figure... one that seems to have spikes of bone jutting from his arms. His face is shrouded in shadows.

You look back at Layla... no. That's not Layla, her hair is blonde and she's older-looking. Layla looked no older than 18, this woman is nearly 50.

You see the shadowy figure nod, and extend his hand. The older not-Layla walks forward and places her hand in his...

You jolt awake to the impact of the plane's wheels on the ground. You're back.

You're still exhausted, so the next half hour is a blur of you half-carrying a sleepy Kia to the DWMA, where you manage to get directions to her room from her. You tuck her in as best you can... man, you're tired.

You briefly consider passing out on the floor next to Kia's bed, but you decide not to risk it. The boy's wing isn't THAT far, and you'd rather not piss off Miss Braun again.

You sleepily wander back to your room, bumping into Robert (quite literally) as he went about his business. Is he this tired all the time? How does he live like that?

You manage to make it to your door. You turn the handle, smiling as you imagine the sweet embrace of the bed inside.

The handle sticks. You try again, and realize that it is locked.

These doors don't have locks.

Kia thinks you're a big meanie jerk (and also was more awake than she let on as you tucked her in. Part of her wanted you to stay).

Shinobu heard you got back safely. She didn't get to see the conversation with the witch, but she knows you're okay. She was more worried than she admitted to herself.

Lord Death has concerns about your trusting nature.

Layla wonders why the hell you tried to stick up for her. She'll be watching for you.

Robert has already forgotten that you bumped into him. He was too preoccupied with figuring out how to get the True Harem End on his copy of Precure Weapon Girls.

Akemi thinks you're an idiot for not immediately attacking the witch. She obviously had Soul Protect active, so you would have had time to kill her as she released it. Daisuke thinks your way was much more manly and brave, though.

>>778697

Kia still thinks of things more openly than that, but she's heard stories about the atrocities witches committed.

She spent the entire time around Layla waiting for the other show to drop, and the fact that it didn't made her worried.
>>
>>778808
What type of Atrocities do they actually commit?
>>
>>778811
Well, forcibly turning people into Demon Weapons sucked. They also pioneered the process to create Kishin Eggs, and they can convert human souls into raw life force to extend their own lives, if the human is strong enough. Anything else is secret for now.
>>
>>778811
Manufacture of kishin eggs for one, and that on the LIGHT side. I mean look at Medusa, she was a typical witch in term of thinking, if not power and cunning.

Basically MAD scientists who'd nuke a populated city just to see the effects.
>>
Jesus christ I miss the morning session and suddenly we're Team Witches Tits. Should have just stayed quiet like we decided on the first vote.
Also why the hell would a street rat be this trusting of someone everyone around him is afraid or mistrustful of?
I know I'm just raving at the clouds but god damn.
>>
>>778829
Mostly because she didn't nuke us when she could have. I personally don't trust her, and think she's gaming us, but no way in hell we're beating her. Also I expected the big D to turn this to his advantage somehow instead of saying flat "no". Death is cunning and patient, usually. Even when he is acting the fool that's usually obfuscating stupidity.
>>
>>778829
Hey, what if Layla is pure and good like Angela from the series?

pfft

Okay, maybe not, but she's clearly not Medusa

right?
>>
>>778819
I'm gonna be honest, I don't see the issue with that. How were witches fought in the past anyway if they made demon weapons?

>>778834
Hey, as long as its willing wither through Mind-control or not. I'm all for it.
>>
>>778833
That just means she's not actively trying to kill us not that she's worth trusting.
>>

The problem with Medusa is you couldn't tell she was bad from IC knowledge until she punched you in the dick, stole you anti-kishin security system keys and nearly blows you up.

Archived, and 10 minutes later there's 2 positive votes. I... don't know what to say.

Anyways, to anyone still kicking around, a question, and a request:

How do the character interactions feel? Do you believe these would be real people, or at least fit in with the Soul Eater ensemble? This universe feels tricky, because you have a cute scene where the crew plays basketball, a lewd scene where the magic catgirl comes on to the main guy, and a serious as balls scene where someone gets seriously hurt and people try to kill each other, very close to each other. I'm trying to fit these pieces together, and I'm worried I'll go too far into the serious when things get real, like they tend to on missions.

How am I doing on that front? And can I trust you all will keep me on track with what you'd like to see? I'm doing this for me, but also to make sure you guys have fun.

The request: I need pictures. Pictures of spiderman people you imagine the characters to look like. I want to start using more, but I feel like there's so much garbage to sift through when I do it myself, and I don't obsessively consume anime, so I have no idea where to even start looking among characters. Looking back, I should have looked at pictures and based the descriptions off of ones I liked. Anyways, it would help a lot.
