Welcome, boys and girls, to Demon Overlord Quest. Just as a heads-up, the openig I prepared is a bit writefaggish, so bear with me while I turn this bad boy out.

OVERLORD DEAD!
The newspaper the Prinny hands you has the portrait of an old demon with dusty blue hair plastered over 80% of the front page. Investigating further reveals the Overlord of the Netherworld you live in, Potential X, passed away during the aftermath of a failed coup d'etat. Overlord Ghraanus tripped over the corpse of yet another would-be usurper and fell down all 40,000 steps of the staircase leading to his luxurious throne.

Ouch.

But this isn't bad news to you! Now that the old man is out of the way, you, a young demon with strong abilities have the opportunity to take the throne and ascend to your rightful place as Demon Overlord of Potential X!

And actually, the newspaper addresses that! Well, not your name or you in particularly, but all powerful young demons with ambitions (or delusions) of glory and fame. A series of tests of power and skill will be held at the palace. How convenient!

(Con't)

>>And actually, the newspaper addresses that! Well, not your name or you in particularly, but all powerful young demons with ambitions (or delusions) of glory and fame.

So the newspaper thinks we aren't powerful, young, or a demon with ambitions or delusions of glory and fame?

I think the first stop is not some dumb palace tournament, but the newspaper hq. That place gotta burn.
>>
You scramble to the Palace as fast as your demonic legs can carry you. Luckily by the time you arrive, the line outside is still fairly short. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean this is going to be easy. You try to make small talk with the tall blonde demon in front of you, but they ignore you. It seems he isn't here to make friends.

"Next, dood!" A Prinny cries out and the line moves forward.

"This is taking forever, dood. Can't we speed this up a bit?" Another, bored sounding Prinny complains loudly back to the first one.

"Not unless you want to make the Master upset, dood. Personally, dood, I don't want to lose a whole decade's salary just because you're impatient!" You can almost hear the Prinnies shudder from way back at the end of the line.

Finally, you reach the front desk. Two Prinnies are sitting at a hastily decorated folding table. A poorly spelled sign reading "AWDISHUN SINE-UPS" is taked to the front. The bored-looking Prinny pipes up first.

"Thanks for participating inthe Potential X Potential Overlord tryout slash tournament. Before you join the other contestants, please fill out this form, dood."

"C'mon! Say it with a bit more fire, dood!" The angry Prinny sitting next to Bored Prinny critiques. Bored Prinny just sighs heavily.

"It doesn't matter, dood. They're the last one. This is the last space on the clipboard, dood."

You ignore their prattling and take the pen in you hand.

>>
Confidently, you write your name on the final line of the clipboard.

GNEOTHO

Both Prinnies look down at your crisp handwriting and quizzically look at you, then each other, and then back at you.

"Uh, dood. Not to be rude, but..." The Bored Prinny fidgets nervously.

"How do you pronounce that, dood?"

"The G is silent." You tell them. "So its Nee-Aw-Tho"

They both nod with the revelation. "That makes our job just a little easier, dood! Now come with us! Its time to start the games, dood!"

You follow them into the main area of the Palace. Its a long, marble hall with massive gold-encrusted pillars depicting demons waging epic battles among each other as well as humans and angels. Its quite a spectacle to behold, but you aren't here to just gaze about the hall. You'll have all the time in the world to do that once you become Overlord!

Inside a crowd of about 30 other demons awaits you. You see the blonde demon near the front of the crowd. Around him are some other roguish looking demons with bruises and black eyes. You guess that the competition had prematurely started in the lobby while you were signing up.

A decrepit old demon walks to the front of the crowd and up a couple of the stairs. Right over the corpse of the old Overlord. You guess news broke right as his body hit the floor, so no ones actually picked that thing up yet.

"GREETINGS POTENTIAL X POTENTIAL OVERLORDS! I AM SENESCHAL BRYNN ADVISOR TO THE OVERLORD." His voice is ungodly loud and the entire crowd has to cover their ears, lest they be deafened.

"YOU ARE HERE TO FILL THE ROLE LEFT BY OUT BELOVED OVERLORD, MAY HE REST IN PIECE." He gestures to the body on the ground. "AND TO CHOOSE THE BEST FOR THE JOB, WE AT THE PALACE HAVE CREATED THIS TOURNAMENT TO FIND OUT NEW MASTER!"

The crowd unleashes an uproar of approval and confidence. "BUT FIRST WE MUST DISCOVER EACH OF YOUR TRUE TALENTS AND SKILLS!" From above, two Succubi descend with a large moving wheel covered in question marks. "EACH OF YOU MUST SPIN THE WHEEL OF DESTINY TO UNCOVER YOUR TRUE CALLING IN LIFE!"

The crowd hushes instantly as a wave of unease crashes over you. The old man points at you in the back. "YOU THERE! YOU HAVE THE HONOR OF THE FIRST SPIN!" You walk up to the stairs, heart beating louder than you ever thought possible. You grip the wheel with a shaky and and give it a strong tug.

The colors spin and spin... and spin... and spin... wait... shouldn't it have stopped by now? You feel dizzy and disoriented for several long minutes as the magic of the wheel unleashes your true destiny. Finally the spinning stops and you find yourself again. The world looks much taller than before. On top of that, you feel immensely tougher and stronger than before. Not that you weren't strong, but now you feel like you can fully use that might to all of your ability!

"AHH~!" The old man crones as he stares at you with flushed cheeks and a wide lecherous grin. "YOU ARE... AN ARMOR KNIGHT! DEFENDER OF HER CHARGES! SURELY SUCH A DEMON IS SUITED TO RULE AND DEFEND HER DOMAIN!"

You look down at your hands, balling them into fists as you quickly become accustomed to your new form. You might not have started out like this, but it somehow feel right. Like wearing a tailor made glove. With this, you can easily overpower your foes and defend what is rightfully yours. You confidently walk down from the stairs and back to where you had been waiting before.

"Out of the way, weaklings." The gruff, blonde, giant of a demon walks up to the wheel next. "I already know I'm fated for power. Let's get this formality out of the way." With one hand, he pulls hard on the wheel. For a moment you think he might actually knock it over instead of spin it, but it stays standing (barely) and spins for several long minutes. You see the demon be engulfed in a nearly blinding white cylinder of light as it spins. You surmise this is what everyone else saw when you took your turn.
me
Eventually the wheel stops. Where the giant stood is now a petite girl with bright green hair. The demon blinks for a moment before reacting with surprise and the with rage. "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! THIS A FUCKING JOKE?! I DEMAND YOU CHANGE ME BACK! GIVE ME BACK MY POWER, YOU WRINKLED NUTSACK OF AN OLD MAN!" The girl shakes the old man vigorously attempting to intimidate him.

"HOHOHOHO! Sorry, young lady, but the Wheel of Destiny has revealed your true fate. Much power lies before you. The Valkyrie is a swift and powerful warrior! Someone to be feared! Take heart in that!"

An hour passes as more and more demons spin the wheel. You see Clerics, Clergy Warriors, Mages, Skulls, a few Monsters, and many more classes of Demon become realized. As the last one (reformed into a Bear) steps down from the stair, the Seneschal addresses the crowd.

Not that, it's the lackluster grammar, improper use of its, starting multiple sentences in a row with the same word, and somewhat stilted descriptions that give it away.

ANYTHING GOES AS LONG AS ITS WITHIN THE ARENA!" The ground beneath you and the other contestants shudders and splits as another strange wheel emerges from below along with a Prinny in a top hat. The old man shouts again.

"YOUR NAMES WILL BE DRAWN RANDOMLY IN PAIRS. THOSE TWO DEMONS WILL BE TELEPORTED TO A FIELD OF BATTLE DETERMINED BY THE WHEEL OF COMBAT!"

"FIRST UP IS:" Brynn accepts two pieces of paper from one of the succubi. "GNEOTHO VERUS:" Another slip of parchment is handed to the Seneschal. "DOC FLOOFERS?" He stares quizzically at the name. "IS THAT YOUR REAL NAME?" A demon wearing clothes that seem to fit better in a Western film nods his head. "ER... ANYWAY YOUR BATTLE LOCATION IS:" Again the old man pauses. The Prinny next to the Wheel of Combat gives it a hearty spin. The device stops on a picture of a cactus. "THE SOULLESS SANDS!"

You and your opponent are blinded by another white light as Brynn speaks the name of your arena. You feel the ground disappear beneath you and your body plummet into the inky blackness of this magical void. You try to scream, but no sound is produced. The moment is instantly over as you feel your rear end hit and then sink into a dune of fine sand. You can see your opponent, Doc Floofers (you're aren't sure that is his real name either) in a similar position in another dune around 1000 feet away from you.

"CAN YOU TWO HEAR ME? IT IS I, SENESCHAL BRYNN, CONTACTING YOU THROUGH THIS MAGICAL VIEWING SCREEN IN THE SKY ABOVE YOU!" You look up quickly, seeing the old demon's wrinkly face grinning as well as a few of the other contestants spectating behind him. "NOW THAT YOU HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY, YOU WILL NOTICE WEAPONS HAVE BEEN GIFTED TO YOU FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE FIGHTS! THEY ARE MAGICALLY LINKED TO THE WHEEL OF COMBAT AND SO CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE ARENAS. SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING IT." He scolds you both preemptively. "NOW THEN, AT THE COUNT OF THREE, THE TWO OF YOU CAN BEGIN YOUR BOUT!"

With as much strength as you can muster, you hurl your spear at the Doc Floofers before quickly rising to your feet and sprinting at the demon before he can recover. Your armor is heavy and your aren't used to having to run in dry, shifting sand. Your feet slide out from under you and you tumble down the dune. However, your spear has struck true! Doc Floofers lets out a cry of agony as the spear pierces his bare stomach. He rolls to his side to take a shot at your prone form.

Thinking quickly, you roll to your left. Floofers' projectiles hit the dry sand with dull thuds and you scramble back to your feet. The Gunner is still laying on the dune with your spear sticking out of his gut. He probably won't be getting up anytime soon, but he still has a means to attack. Your only option at the moment would be to get to your spear and finish the job.

PING! PWANG!

Floofers' bullets ricochet off your armor and iron-like skin. It barely even tickles you as you climb up the shifting sands. You glare up at the wounded Gunner. His eyes are filled with fear and panic and he tries to fire another round only to miss wildly. The demon lets out a high pitched yelp before you yank the spear out of his stomach. He screams once more before fading into wisps of white light.

"DOC FLOOFERS HAS BEEN DEFEATED! GNEOTHO IS THE WINNER OF THE FIRST FIGHT OF THE TOURNAMENT!" A smile overtakes your face. You cannot help yourself but to jump and cheer with satisfaction at your first victory with this new form!

Your way back to the Palace is similar to your teleportation to the desert arena, though the landing is a bit more graceful now that you know what to expect. Just like the Brynn said, the spear you had been using as disappears just as mysteriously as you had received it.

"A WONDERFUL VICTORY! WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED SUCH A SURPRISING MOVE LIKE THROWING THE SPEAR?!" You aren't sure if the old man is being sarcastic or not as he chuckles to himself before announcing the next bout of the tournament. "NEXT UP IS... KAIN VERSUS... HEXAGRAMATON?! WHERE ARE YOU PEOPLE GETTING THE RIDICULOUS NAMES?!" Brynn cries out incredulously as he throws the pieces of paper away behind him. An undead maid quickly picks up the litter and disposes of it.

So I'm wondering

starting off a quest with no character or setting introduction and going straight into a tournament is incredibly weird.

There is no knowledge about anyone or anything, no incentive other than the nebulous title of overlord.

And tournament arcs are usually like 70% prep, social, and sabotage, 30% competition, and are generally not very long (until shit gets crazy at least.)

This is speaking with no knowledge of what you plan, so I could be completely wrong, but starting a quest with no characters or setting really built up or barely even introduced, going straight into a tournament seems like a terrible idea.

Basically at the moment we're locked in a featureless void being told to fight your imaginary friend to become king of the void.

You have introduced the goal but nothing to give any reason to accomplish set goal.

Hell the MC doesn't even have any sort of a personality, there have been no actions or options for the MC to say or act a certain way in a non-fight situation. Right now the only difference between the MC and any of the throwaway character Doc Floofers is that the MC has a portrait.

I guess my problem is that there is absolutely no substance to anything at all right now. The quest is just THERE IS A TOURNAMENT TO BECOME OVERLORD AND THIS ARMOR KNIGHT IS THE MC AND IS COMPETING.
There is no hook, nothing to really draw interest in playing or continuing to play.
>>
>>780834
This sort of absurdity is par the course for Disgaea, really. I fully expect shit to make even less sense next thread.
>>
>>780847
Disgaea absurdity is fun, it's in the OP which is the reason I picked this up in the first place.

But there needs to be a world that the events occur in and characters that participate in said events.

This would be like if you started up disgaea and the game went name select screen directly into the start of the prinny bowling mission.

You start by introducing the characters, then personalities, then their motives/goals, then finally the big action.

It's because the action is pointless if there is nobody that the audience has been introduced to that they should know or care about and thus care about the outcomes of the actions.

Nothing has been introduced, there is no real context for anything. There is quite literally nothing to get interested, a joke needs context and characters, there are none here.

The setting is Potential X and that is all we know about it, just the name.
The MC is an armor knight.
That is everything there is. Nothing can be made from such little content.
>>
>>780910
Okay.
>>
>>780910
I guess that means it's over. The QM isn't going to write any more, because he doesn't have anything else planned, because nothing can be made from such little content.

Holy shit man, it's not even the tenth update in the first thread. It's obviously done in the interests of pacing. Patience.
>>
>>780910

I will give it the advantage of doubt. Besides, it's not that uncommon for games to simply throw you at the action. I mean, some of my favorite games like the metal gear solid series throws you straight into the action and then the plot and background story is slowly unveiled as progress is made.
>>
>>780834
>>780910
Calm your autismal butt down.

>>780919
>>781256
>>781531
We're pretty early into a quest and so far it's "good enough" for me as an intro. Yes people, patience.

Let's just say I wasn't happy or hooked with that 16th MS Team Quest or its intro.

This quest starts off hot like Nerv Bridge Simulator and it's fine enough for me to start being engaged right away.
>>
>>782085

Yeah, let's give OP a chance. Also, I liked how he sorta implemented the reincarnation game mechanic here, and it is still just as silly, what with being able to "promote" a dude demon or a monster into a girl demon and viceversa.

I guess that also means that our MC is a generic demon for now and only once she gets a title worthy of a main character she will acquire her own unique class and lose the ability to class change, unless OP only uses part of the game mechanics.
>>
So the Demon Lord candidate isn't a girl?
>>
>>780169

...Assuming we somehow don't get killed or kill hi--I mean, her, we have SO have got to make her one of our vassals. What's a leader without a potential Starscream to keep him on his toes and sharp?
