/qst/ - Quests

Alright, so last time, we started the quest, did a bunch of stuff, and we eventually hit auto-sage, so I jumped ship in order to make a new thread.

Last thread:

>Okay, I'm up after a nap, and after troubleshooting my internet. Where were we again..?

Ah, yes. Last time, we'd just gotten the F License after a struggle against a spooky, but not very scary gentleman, and we were currently exploring the shopping district of the Great Tree. Something about buying what mp potions we could get our hands on?

You decide to take stock of your monsters to decide if you even really need MP potions.

>The QM slowly realizes he never told any of you what the monsters on the team had as skills.

>Nervous sweating intensifies because Slilim has Slimer, Uber Helpful, and Abiliterator Ward

Mimi has Crack and Frizz, Dark Knight, and Agility Boost

Yacob has Naturalist, Anti-Metal, and Attack Boost

Juno has Healer, Cleanser, and Cleric
>>
>>782685

um. I ave no idea what this means but let's buy one?
>>
>>782732
Short version: It means that Slilim is literally an HP/MP battery for the rest of the team.

Slightly longer version: MP potions are probably still a good idea because share magic only works so well in a boss fight. Slilim is still #1 support, even if Juno could become #1 healer after a single generation of synthesis.

>>782622
You decide to buy about 10 or so MP potions.

I'm glad to see you're back! I'm honestly probably going to go from session format to whenever I can update format to keep running this, which I guess lapses into session format, to run this because I can't seem to get into a beneficial sleep schedule to save my life.

>>782752

Going to see the medal man seems like a good idea. You make your way back up to the top of the great tree, and find a man dressed up suspiciously like Artorius. Except he's wearing glasses.

"Oh, hello there! I'm the medal man. I collect tiny medals, and I'll give you prizes for them. Can I have the tiny medals you have currently?"

>Note, you have 36 tiny medals. You could trade them for 5K each at the shopping district, or you could trade them here and unlock a very good traveler's gate that is way over your level right now. The traveler's gate has metal slimes as a common-ish enemy, which translates to lots and lots of exp and a decent amount of gold. It's a general gate for metal-type enemies, actually. You could also get some equipment for your monsters that is anti-metal equipment, a free metal slime, and a free liquid metal slime. All at once.
>>
Fuck me, forgot to include an option to continue again.
>>784027
>Will you trade your tiny mdeals in?
Yes
No
>>
>>784031

How are tiny medals handled in this quest? Are rewards accumulative and given after reaching X amounts of tiny medals, or the medals are traded and vanishes from your inventory and need to get more medals, which I assume can be obtained infinitely in this way? Depending how it is handled, I would prefer to save medals for higher tier rewards.
>>
>>784265
I've got a table for them somewhere. It's cumulative redemption that stops at about 150, but you're going to want to get to 100 for the uh... secret prize waiting for you at that increment.
>>
>>784270
>>784265
Fuck my posting incomplete posts. Anyway anything after 150 medals just gives you the equivalent in gold.
>>
>>784271

Good, then trade dem tiny medals. Truth be told, i'm not very familiar with the monsters subseries and how they handle stuff, played the first one a loooooooong time ago but I mostly played the main games up to DQ 8 and the Heroes spinoffs.
>>
>>784279
the gbc games were a refined version of the system from DQ5, the gba game was based off the DQ7 system (from what I've been able to discern, having not made the time to play it yet). and everything since then has been it's own thing. The Joker system has very big flaws, but overall I think it's an improvement, post Joker 2, which to be fair is a large amount of the games.

Overall I'd totally recommend the Terry's Wonderland remake if you can get your hands on it to play it, though.
>>
>>784315

Cool. I'll see if I get to play more of the monsters series to get a better feel for the quest
>>
>>784318
This quest is based off an amalgamation between the remake of the first game and the actual first game, with a bit of original plot tossed in. Like how the scout that was met last thread was Joker from the DS game(s). I thought about having it be Soltaire but by the time I'd posted it, I'd already said it was a guy instead of a girl.
>>
>>784027
>>784279

Wow sorry for taking so long, I'm kinda just out of it right now but I meant to post this well over an hour ago. I wish I could say I was making up the 1d3 bullshit but there's literally a +/- gender in games starting with Joker. It's really convenient during chain breeding so long as you don't end up with two of them in the middle of it. That's what +/- staves are for though.

>You decide to trade in the tiny medals.
You got:
Metal Slime (roll 1d3 to determine gender)
Liquid Metal Slime (roll 1d3 to determine gender)

By the way, for context, for those of you that have played Dragon Quest 8, the monsters here do have skill trees much like in that game.

However you can improve the skill trees by breeding them later down the line whenever you guys decide you've found a suitable breeding partner for a party member. I'll let you guys decide which skill trees to keep and which to discard into sentient books that will live on the farm until you decide to use them when that rolls around.

she's dressed like the bunny girl in the middle
You decide to visit that strangely happy bunny girl outside the arena. She offers to give you a puff-puff, and you say yes and sit down in a chair nearby while she works her magic. However right in the middle of it, just as things are getting good, something odd happens as things go from feeling amazing to feeling only okay, the lady lets out an exasperated sigh and says she's going to have to finish this another day. She mentions that she's run out of the supplies she uses to keep her slimes nice and soft, not to mention cooperative. Something about a combination of mineral oil, mineral powder, and keeping them well fed. One of these problems you can fix, but you have no idea where to get makeup or mineral oil in these parts aside from mail ordering it. Maybe if you went to a more industrial kingdom you could get some for cheap or something, though.

[spoilers]Exposition time: She would have offered to give you a more... personal/lewd version, but she's kind of flatter than most of the bunny girls. Her boobs just didn't grow as much, so she keeps her slimes in her bra to compensate for it. It doesn't actually look all that awkward at all most of the time, and it's a win win situation for her and the slimes since they're so small anyway. She used to be a fairly competent monster tamer, so I'm sure if you guys could find this out somehow she'd probably breed something relatively strong with you guys down the road once you're more accomplished. you would not believe how hard it is to find a good bunny girl image on google. For a brief moment you think about going to visit the monster grandpa at the starry shrine, but then you realize you don't really have a reason to go down there yet. So you go to the monster farm instead. Sir Kay is waiting for you there, and mentions that not only has he found the other Metal Slime, but that you can now carry up to an additional 4 monsters with you to switch out with your battle party in case you need it. Which is pretty good because you've got access to three metal-slime type monsters at a time where they basically can't be touched.

Metalia

I would like to check the skills of the (liquid) metal slimes before making a judgement, and I assume that as it was the case in DQ 5, allied metal slimes have super low HP, sky high defense and immunity to most spells.

The skills on the liquid metal slime are as follows: Bombadeer, Woosh and Zap, and Agility Boost III

And you are correct in thinking they have those stats, because that's what having a metal body does to your stats. There are ways to make it harder, too. But only by one tier of hardness. Sadly it makes the monster squishier.

>>786876

>Female Metal Slime get! Her name is Metalia.

You decide to visit the queen. On your way there, you walk past that interesting counter, and decide to stop and grab a flyer from it. Something about WiFi, and getting free stuff from it, but a disclaimer stating it's only for people that have cleared the D class and up due to the strong monsters in it. You suppose you'll come back later, but it wouldn't hurt to ask the bunny running the counter later what all this is about.

You stash the flyer and continue on your way to the queen's bedroom. Once you get there, you find a beautiful young woman who looks a lot like Artorius sitting on the admittedly really nice bed. She's reading a book that, based on the title, is about how to wield a sword properly in combat. Maybe she's studying her form? There are quite a few swords on the wall, ranging from big to small, and several of them are quite exquisite. But the one that catches your eye the most is displayed in full splendor, with the scabbard right beneath it, also on full display. Both of them shine brilliantly, as if they alone are what light up the room.

"Ahem."

"That I have. Might I ask about that sword on your wall, though? The one that lights up the whole room with only it's presence?"

"That would be Excalibur, and it's scabbard, Avalon. They're both family heirlooms. Beyond that though, they're both precious possessions of mine, a dear friend risked his life to get the scabbard back to me a long time ago. I haven't seen him since then, but I know that one day he'll be back for me."

"Ah."

"Anyway, since I collect swords as a hobby, I'm not opposed to giving them away either. I'll have to come up with a list, but if you come back, I'll have it ready. Show me the monsters on said list at any given time and I'll give you a new sword for your efforts."

"Neat. I've got other things to do still however, so I've got to get going now."

"May the goddess Rubiss bless you in your travels then, Loto."

Maybe not a good idea in random encounters due the risk of fainting in this stage of the game if their HP is way too low, but they will prove their worth in boss battle as they can't be hit more than once per battle turn.
>>
>>787320

>>787327
Most monsters will only hit once per turn for quite some time, but don't be surprised if you see some of them hitting twice, three times, or even four times in a single turn later on. Bosses are the only thing that can feasibly do anything past scratch the metal slimes for now, though.

Your main party has risen to level 15! Your sub party has risen to level 10! because metal slimes gain levels on a bad curve and the like, you know.

You know you're at the end of the dungeon because you've arrived in that familiar grassland area again. It was the same in the gate of Beginnings. The air even smells the same. The only thing that is different is the monster variety really.

You take a nap in one of the trees. It's probably the same one from last time even. This time, you wake up to the sound of two kids talking among themselves. You're clearly the target of their conversation, though.

"Hey sis, is that a guy up there in that tree?"
"No, bro, she's gotta be a girl."
"And I'm telling you, he's a guy!"

And it continues like this for a while. You could probably get away if you slipped down quietly and bolted, or you could talk to them for a bit. Or you could ask them to leave you alone. Their parents either don't exist or are highly irresponsible.

"Oh boy, I've actually got a whole list of questions. I'll go down it, hopefully you guys can help me with at least one of them."

You ask Cobi and Tara about various things.

"Hmmm... That's a tough one. I'm not quite sure what to say about breeding a Dracky. You could just continuously Synthesize her with other Drackies until you get an especially strong Dracky. Though that would take a lot of effort."
"Sis, you know he doesn't have to just use Drackies. You used various monsters and then finished the chain with the same monster once. I think it was for your Gem Slime, right?"
"It was for my Liquid King Metal Slime Cobi. I had to Synthesize two Gem Slimes together along the way and they just happened to make an exceptionally strong one. It's not my fault that the pedigree for monster breeding varies by kingdom. I'm not even sure why that is!"

It's because of the makeup of the starry shrine in each tree being vastly different, but they don't know that

"Kids, please, can we get back on topic?"

"Oh, uh... Sure. Where were we?"
"Cobi, we still needed to answer the rest of her questions."
"Oh, right. You can really breed monsters at any level after 10, but the further along you wait, the stronger their offspring will be. There's an upper limit to this, though. So once you've reached it, you really don't need to bother wasting your time going further unless you have to."

"And monster recommendations?"

"Metal Slime-type monsters."
"Dragons"
"METAL SLIMES!"
"DRAGONS!"
"METAL. SLIMES!"
"DRA. GONS!"

This goes on for a while. It was amusing at first but got old real quick.

"Okay, okay, I get it. I've got a few Metal Slimes with me, actually."

Tara's face lights up at your comment.

"Oh! Oh! Can we meet up later then? I'd be interested in breeding a few of my extras with one of them!"

"Sounds like a deal then. I'll meet you kids at the arena in the Great Tree later down the road before the Starry Night Tournament."

by asking them about breeding you may have unlocked your chance to skip your way to a Gem Slime down the road.

You decide to head forward. Eventually you find the well to the next floor and a floating diamond of some kind. Your archive vibrates heavily, so you pull it out of your bag. You seem to have gotten a message, so you swipe the screen and read it.

>Hello, it seems you've reached the bottom floor of a traveler's gate. You're probably wondering why you got this notification: It's simple really, this is a tutorial message about beacons! Simply tap the beacon and you can cast zoom inside of that gate to go to said beacon. It's really convenient!<

You stare at the beacon for a few moments as you put the archive back in your bag. Then you walk over to it and tap it. A soft white light envelopes the beacon as you feel a tingling sensation. Suddenly you have a very clear mental image of the area. You would have zero problems casting Zoom to get here with this.

After a few moments, you decide to climb into the well. As everything fades to black, the ambient sounds and sights of the grassland are replaced with the sound of water dripping and the dim lighting of a cave. In front of you is a room of some sort. There's a girl in front of you, sitting on a bed, and behind you, a closed gate, but beyond it, you can see some daylight.

>What willst thou doeth?
Talk to the princess
bumble around the room before talking to the princess
don't talk to the princess but talk to the princess anyway
Write-in (Talk to the princess)

Next thread is probably coming up for my next post once I gain the motivation to run stuff. I've not had much time to myself this last week, so I've not had much time to run as a result.

It's okay man. /qst/ is home of several slow quests, so I'm used to sporadic updates, although I will miss having my dose of DQ

Yeah, sorry. I've kinda just been drained lately. I didn't want it to keep effecting my writing. On the plus side, Dragon boss fight next thread.

Take it easy. The results aren't nice when you force yourself to do something you otherwise like. We can wait and yay, dragon boss fight! This is surely going to be the first real challenge of our gender ambiguous main character
