You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You were currently heading for the Japanese coast with your ragtag joint fleet of American and Japanese shipgirls, having only recently fought off a large Abyssal ambush fleet. Currently, you were riding in a Chinook, obviously having been pressed into naval duties due to the nature of the conflict. However, you weren't really complaining. It was much roomy inside, giving enough room to fit the two shipgirl forces.

And it was LOUD. Not just the helcopter's engines, but also all the talking going on. Yamato seemed to be catching up with Iowa. Apparently they operated together earlier in the current war? You also noticed one destroyer girl, who apparently tagged along with Yamato as an escort, pestering North Carolina and Washington like a fangirl.

Meanwhile, funnily enough, it looked like Portland was being hounded by the Akatsuki sisters, who were all concerned/impressed with the serious damage she had sustained during the battle. Their unofficial caretaker, Tenryuu watched on, clearly trying not to be intimidated by Enterprise, who was sitting right next to her.

You head over to the back end of the helicopter, where North Carolina and Washington were trying to deal with a particular hyperactive Japanese destroyer.

"Oh oh oh!" The little grey-haired destroyer jumps up and down excitedly. "You were some of the first American battleships to start using 16 inch mark 6 guns, right right right?"

"That's right." North Carolina nods awkwardly, not sure how to deal with the little destroyer that was constantly pestering her with questions.

"And Washington, you were there at Guadalcanal, right? The one who ABSOLUTELY SLAUGHTERED Kirishima?!"

"I guess that's one way to put it..." Washington chuckles, more bemused than put off, unlike her sister.

"Ya ladies need some help?" You ask as you stroll up.

"Yes." North Carolina says.

"Oh, no!" Washington giggles.

"Oh hey, Hoel, right?" The Japanese destroyer spins around and shakes your hand. "I'm Kiyoshimo! How do you do?"

"Um, good, I guess." You nod.

"Uuuuuuuu, I'm so jealous of you!" Kiyoshimo squeals, her whole body trembling. "You get to hang out with such cool battleships every day! It makes me so jeaaaloouuuus!"

"Little Kiyoshimo here wants to be a battleship someday, too!" Washington chuckles as she pats the destroyer on the shoulder.

"A bit silly, if you ask me." North Carolina sigh.

"I'll show you that I can be a battleship someday!" Kiyoshimo proclaims. "Believe it!"

Yep. Crazy. Not necessarily a bad thing, though...

"Hey, don't let anybody tell you otherwise." You grin. If you could scare off motherfucking Yamato in battle, well, who knows what this destroyer coul do if she put her mind to it?

"Cool! Thank you!" Kiyoshimo grabs your hands and shakes them rapidly, her views apparently being validated by your input.

"She's certainly the excitable one." Washington grins.

"Remind me of OUR destroyers." North Carolina shakes her head.

"Hey, heeeeey." Kiyoshimo pokes at you. "You... you know Iowa, right?"

"Well, uh, yeah. I've sailed with her." You nod and turn to look at Iowa, who was still hamming it up with Yamato. God that was such a weird sight. "Why?"

"Well, I was just kinda hoping..." Kiyoshimo shifts nervously and reaches in her bag, taking out a notebook. "I was hoping you could ask her to sign my autograph book? I'm trying to get all the battleships in it!"

She then opens it up to see that she's already collected signatures from North Carolina and Washington. North Carolina's was clean, crisp, and perfectly legible, while Washington's was a bit more... freely elegant, if that made any sense. Consistent with their personalities, you guess.

"S-so can you ask her for me? Please?" Kiyoshimo asks meekly, hiding the bottom half of her face behind her notebook.

Jeez, this destroyer really was genuinely fanstruck!

Oh... oh... a genius and extremely devious idea pops up into your head.

"HEY IOWA! HEADS UP!" You yell as you grab Kiyoshimo by the hips, spin around to gain some momentum, and bodily throw the Japanese destroyer clear across the helicoper passenger bay and right into Iowa's waiting lap.

"Oh! I love catch!" Iowa perks up as her warning radar detects the incoming destroyer and catches her as easily as you would a softball. "Well hey there ya little cutie!"

"Hawawawawawawawa!" Kiyoshimo seems to completely break down as she finds herself in the arms of one of her idols.

"Thank you." North Carolina sighs. "I was starting to get a headache.."

"Poor Carol just doesn't like being the center of attention!" Washington laughs lightly as she prods her sister with her elbow.

"Unnecessary distractions.' North Carolina huffs.

"We are landing!" The pilot calls out! "Everybody take your seats!"

Shit, you were there already? The time seemed to have just flown by!

You glance out of your viewport and get your first glance of Yokosuka Naval Base. You've never been here yourself, but even from your limited view, you could tell just how massive the place was. Probably even moreso with the Abyssal threat and all. Like Pearl Harbor, it was a sprawling complex of dull grey buildings, surrounded by lines of artillery cannons, missile launchers, and other fortifications. In the bay, you could see constant streams ships, both military and civilian, head in and out. You could also see scars from the conflict, too. Craters from bomb and shell hits, scorched areas where fires burned, and wrecked buildings, vehicles, and sunken ships that nobody apparently had time to clear. There was no doubt that this place had seen its share of last stands and desperate defenses.

The helicopter itself homes in on one of the many helipads, where you can see the rest of your American contingent as well as a knot of Japanese shipgirls were gathered to welcome you all back.

"So what do you think?" Yamato smiles as she gently puts a hand on your shoulder, causing you to lock up. When the hell did she get so close to you?! "This is the main headquarters for the joint USN and JMSDF shipgirl fleet! What do you think?"

Your instincts are telling you either just shut down and play dead or just go nuts and leap out of the helicopter before it could even land. Thankfully, your brain manages to keep your instincts in check, and you stay firmly planted in your seat.

"Well, it doesn't look so different from Pearl!" You say with a grin, still trying to keep your cool. Yamato wasn't only big as a ship, but big as a woman, too. She easily had to be at least six feet tall!

"Ah, is that so?" Yamato smiles brightly. "I never did get to see Pearl, either in this war or the last. I always hoped that I'd be able to visit there someday!"

"Well-" You're about to ask why when you remember that you were in the middle of a war, and no doubt Yamato was too busy protecting her own country. "Maybe we can, soon!"

"That would be nice." Yamato smiles a smile that glows like the sun, a soothing warmth emanating from her very being.

It was still freaking you out. Just a bit.

"So uh, how many other girls ya got cruising around here?" You as as the helicopter comes down for a landing.

"Well, other than me and the other shipgirls here, we have quite a number of destroyers of various classes." Yamato explains with that cheerful smile of hers. "Most of our carriers are stationed here as well! Not quite as many battleships, but we do have Nagato and all of the Kongou sisters!"

Kongo? Oh boy, Sammy wouldn't like that.

"And a healthy amount of cruisers, too!" Yamato continues. "Let's see, we have Atago and Takao, and, oh! You remember Kumano?"

Kumano... Kumano... that name sounded familiar...

And then it hit you. She was THAT cruiser, the one whose nose got bloodied by Johnston and she never could seem to catch a break after that.

"What is a pile of misery and misfortune?" You answer.

Yamato doesn't immediately answer, but she tries to suppress a laugh which comes out as an amused smirk.

"Ah, so you do remember her. I'm sure she'll be quite surprised when she sees Taffy 3 on the base!"

"You don't mean absolutely terrified?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, she's good a putting on a brave face, just like you!" Yamato counters as she pats you on the head.

Yeah... she's good.

At that point, the helicopter landed down on the pad and the loading lamp lowers, letting everybody out. Yamato takes the lead, striding out with that typical elegance and grace of a lead battleship. The only thing that would have made things more perfect was if it was raining cherry blossoms.

"Yamato-senpaaaaaiiii!" You see a destroyer break the ranks and dash towards the battleship. She was wearing a simple school uniform with shoulder length brown hair tied back in a ponytail. For a second you almost thought she was a Fletcher. "You're back!"

"Fubuki!" Yamato pats her junior ship on the head. "I've barely been away for a few hours!"

"Y-yes, well, when we came back on patrol and heard you sortied by yourself-" Fubuki then pauses and looks at you, who happened to be standing next to Yamato. "EEEEH? Yuudachi? B-but I just passed by you! How did you get here?"

"It's magic, poi." You say simply, testing just how gullible Fubuki could be.

"EEEEEEEH!?" You swear that Fubuki's eyes open up like dinner plates. "You have to teach me how you can move so fast, Yuudachi!"

Okay, yeah, pretty damn gullible.

"This isn't Yuudachi!" Yamato laughs. "Fubuki, this is Hoel, Hoel, this if Fubuki, one of our ace destroyers!"

Really? Her?

"Ohmygosh!" Fubuki starts bowing profusely. "I am so sorry for any disrespect I may have shown!"

"Um, it's fine, I was just fuckin' with ya." You grin.

"Though now that you point it out..." Yamato squints. "Hoel does bear some resemblance to Yuudachi. Particularly the hair color and eyes. And I suppose the way that she carries herself."

"Though I think ya gotta go through ship recognition class again!" Tenryuu chortles as she interrupts the encounter and ruffles Fubuki's hair.

"But I don't want Haguro-senpai to scold me again!" Fubuki whines.

"Oi! It's another pirate!" Kidd yelps happily as she tugs Graf Spee along.

Oh great, the clusterfuck was starting.

You try to navigate your way through the brewing insanity. As you do so, you see a glimpse of Tenryuu encountering Graf Spee and trying to show off, a smug smile on her face and hands on her hips.

"I'm the Light Cruiser Tenryuu!" She says proudly at her German counterpart. "Heheh, you scared?"

"Not particularly." Graf Spee shrugs as she straightens up her posture so she reaches her full height, easily at least half a head taller than Tenryuu. "But I'm sure someone around here is."

"Y-yeah! I-I'd hate to b-b-be them!" Tenryuu stammers, trying to fight back a nervous sweat in the face of the renowned and battle harded German commerce raider.

You continue on, catching a glimpse of Iowa bro fisting Nagato.

"You've certainly changed your appearance, Iowa." Nagato chuckles.

"And uh, you seem to have kept yours!" Iowa grins back, her eyes drawn to Nagato's bare midriff. "Been keeping in shape, I see."

"Always." Nagato grins smugly.

You're not even sure what the hell is going on with the destroyers. It just seems like one giant moshpit as San Diego and Dorsetshire try their best to keep the damage contained. Haida accompanies Portland as she's carted away by a mix of medical personnel and a pink haired shipgirl you assume to be a repair ship.

Finally, the Admiral, Captain, and Sam seem to be off in their own little corner, no doubt discussing the logistics of getting all the new arrivals squared away.

"Hoel! Hoel!" Anna practically blindsides you out of nowhere as she grabs your arm. "You need to see this!"

"W-what?!" You blink in surprise.

"Really? Cool!" You grin. "Let's go!"

You let Anna lead you through the chaos of the intermingling shipgirls, until finally you could see Enterprise, Hornet, Midway, and White Plains facing off against Akagi and Kaga. The two Japanese carriers looked, well, pretty much how you expected, based on the many publicity shots you've seen. Dressed in those traditional Japanese archer robes.

It seemed like Enterprise and Akagi were totally hitting it off, the two of them laughing and giggling like schoolgirls. Interestingly enough, Kaga seemed to be staying a ways back, arms crossed and silent like some sort of bodyguard. You immediately got the feeling that she wasn't the talkative type. Hornet likewise was just silently staring at her, the two carriers trying to size each other up.

Midway seemed to be hitting it up with two other carriers, which you assumed to be Hiryuu and Soryuu. Midway was showing off all of her modern equipment, which her Japanese counterparts were just utterly fascinated with.

White Plains looked to be talking with a small, twintailed light carrier. For a brief second you thought it was Vicky, until you realized that she just bore an unseemingly close resemblance to the British carrier.

"Uuuuuuu, which one do we meet first?!" Anna whines, wisps of puffing out of her ears as her mind goes into overdrive.

You decide to head over to see what's up with that light carrier, Anna shuffles off towards Enterprise, no doubt to get up close and personal with Akagi. The big four Jap carriers you already recognized, but this one was a relative nobody to you. However, seeing as how White Plains was an escort carrier, you figured that the light carrier wouldn't feel intimidated by her.

"Oh, Hoel!" White Plains nods as you approach. "This is Ryuujo, one of the light carriers for the JMSDF."

"Yo! How ya doin'? Ya can just call me RJ fer short!" RJ hold her hand out with a smile and what strikes you as a very rustic way of speaking.

"Yep, plane count is a real big thing, it seems." You nod in agreement. "What have they got you doing?"

"Mostly convoy escort, shore defense, that sorta thing." RJ grumbles. "I just wanna go out there someday, ya know? Mix it up with the rest of the girls!"

"Be careful what you wish for." White Plains warns. "In the heat of battle, just having two or three squadrons at your disposal may not be enough."

"Yeah, I kinda know that, but still, it's frustratin', ya know?" RJ shakes her head.

"Well hey, have you girls been getting any upgrades?" You ask, recalling Portland getting carted away. "I'm pretty sure they'd be able to to something about that."

"Well, with y'all here, that's kinda the plan." RJ nods. "But we've been having serious resource crunches, so we never had the time or the materials for upgrades. Once yer Shen guy comes over, thought, that's all gonna change!"

"Assuming they put you in line for one." White Plains points out.

"Come on, WP, do ya always gotta be a party pooper?" You roll your eyes.

"I'm just being realistic." White Plains shrugs.

"Naw, I get it. Bigger ships get priority, right?" RJ sighs.

"Heh, thanks, but I think I'll keep my expectations low, ya know? It'll make the surprise better!" RJ gives a slight grin before it instantly melts away. "Aw nuts."

"What's wrong?" You ask.

"Shoukaku and Zuikaku showed up." RJ groans. "I think y'all want to be gettin' out of here."

"Why's that?" White Plains raises an eyebrow.

"Well, ya see..." RJ pauses. "How do I put this... Kaga doesn't really get along with Shoukaku and Zuikaku. Lot of bad blood between 'em from the War. Never really got over it."

"Is it really that bad?" You ask as you see two new carrier girls, similarly dressed in traditional archer garb, arrive. Almost immediately they're met with a poisonous glare from Kaga, who shifts her attention away from Hornet.

"Well, ta put things in perspective, they used to be deployed in completely opposite ends of the country." RJ sighs. "Shoukaku and Zuikaku in the north and Akagi and Kaga in the south. Looks like some damn fool put all in the same base!"

In real life, the crews of the 1st and 5th carrier divisions did not get along at all, as their was a serious rivalry between the two.

In addition, Shoukaku and Zuikaku didn't participate in Midway for various reasons, but if they had, they could have very well turned the tide the battle and maybe even prevented 1st CarDiv from being annihilated.

And then there's the fact that 5th CarDiv got designated as the 1st CarDiv after Midway.

So yeah, someone miiiiiiight still be salty over all that.

"You know, a carrier cat fight might be interesting to see." You shrug.

"I'm not so sure about that." RJ frowns.

And that's when thing start to heat up. Kaga breaks away from the group and storms up to Shoukaku and Zuikaku. You can't hear what they're saying from the distance you were at, but it was pretty clear that Kaga was telling the other two carriers to move along.

Shoukaku just gives a solemn nod, but Zuikaku appears to be taking none of it.

"Who the hell sunk and made YOU boss?!" She snaps, loud enough that you can hear it.

Zuikaku's outburst is matched by a loud SMACK as Kaga coldly and efficiently backhands the hotheaded carrier. Zuikaku doesn't fall, but she's sent reeling, taking a couple of steps backwards with a big red mark on her cheek.

"So that's how you want it, huh?!" Zuikaku scowls as her hands ball in fists.

"Aw nuts." RJ groans as she starts pushing you and White Plains away. Around you, you could see the other unengaged Japanese carriers quickly whisking their American counterparts away to safety. "This is NOT gonna be pretty. We gotta find some cover!"

"Yoooooo!" You dash up and interpose yourself between the two Jap carriers, forcing to back off, but only a bit. "The hell are you two doing?!"

"This doesn't concern you, gaijin." Kaga glowers at you.

"Yeah, I don't need some other ship to fight my battles for me!" Zuikaku grunts.

"Hey now, I'm just trying to help-"

"What do you know of our struggles? Our circumstances?" Kaga glares even more intensely at you, like she was boring a hole into your hole with just her eyes. "What gives you the right to impose yourself into our affairs?"

Fuck, you liked her better when she was just being quiet and stoic. She certainly knew how to lay down the heat.

"Just make it easy for yourself and move aside." Zuikaku advises. "Kaga here's too stubborn to listen to anybody, much less an outsider like you."

"And you would?" Kaga raises an eyebrow.

"I-I never said that!" Zuikaku sputters.

Meanwhile, behind Zuikaku, Shoukaku looks on with a bit of concern and sadness, but also helplessness. She gives you a silent, pleading look to back off.

And that's when Enterprise seemingly just materializes between the two Jap carriers. You didn't even realize she was there, much less her approach here. Even Kaga and Zuikaku are taken off guard.

Then again, they didn't call her the Grey Ghost for nothing.

"My my." She was a smile on her face that was anything but warm or inviting as she clamps her hands down on Kaga and Zuikaku's shoulders. "Am I seeing two carrier girls fighting with each other?"

"U-u-um-" Zuikaku's protest is killed before it even leaves the crib when Enterprise turn her head to face her, that sinister smile still on her face. "O-Of course not!"

"Ah, that's good to hear, Zuikaku!" Enterpise nods and turns to Kaga. "And what do you have to say about this, Kaga?"

For the briefest of moments, Kaga looks to be thinking about carrying on the fight, but then she remembered that she was facing down motherfucking Enterprise of all ships. If there was any ship that Kaga would have no choice but to respect, it would be her.

"...it was just a misunderstanding." Kaga grumbles, looking away from both Zuikaku and Enterprise.

"Ah, that's good! I'd hate to have intervene." Enterprise smiles brightly. "After all, us carriers have to set a good example for the smaller ships! Isn't that right, Hoel?"

"Um, yeah!" You nod rapidly.

"Now how about you run along, now? I'll finish up things here." Enterprise's words sounds like a suggestion, but you can tell it's pretty much an order from her, which you quickly follow.

"Woooooow. Enterprise is so cool, isn't she?" Anna gushes as you link up with her.

"Well, she IS Enterprise." You remind her.

"I know, but it's just so cool to see that the Japanese carriers respect her, too!"

"I'm pretty sure for different reasons from us." You nod.

"Oh jeez, thank GOD I found you, Hoel." San Francisco slinks up, her head on a swivel as if she were nervous about something.

"Why? It's not like I'm carrying booze on me." You raise an eyebrow. "What's this about?"

"I got a problem. A serious problem." San Fran groans.

You pause and look at Anna, who just shrugs.

"Okay, what is it, then?" You ask.

"One of those Jap destroyers... Akatsuki, she... she..."

Waitaminute, wasn't Akatsuki at Guadalcanal, in that same battle Atlanta got sunk in front of San Fran?

Wait. Wasn't it AKATSUKI that helped sink her?

Oh jeez.

"...she thinks I'm COOL." The cruiser hisses, the fear clear in her eyes.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" San Fran goes.

"Whatever gave you that impression?" You giggle.

"Fuck. I knew I should've just stayed home today." San Fran sighs.

Yeah... Japan was a weird place...

Can ship girls even suffer from lung cancer and liver failure?

They're warships, so no. The smoke is just belched out from the smokestacks and the alcohol goes straight to the engines.

Then by the same token they shouldn't be able to get drunk off alcohol or high on nicotine, yet San Fran clearly does all these things.

Oh wait... I'm trying to apply realistic biochemistry to magical ship people.

Nevermind, forget I said anything.

Well of course they can have all that, they're girls.

Basically, just think of them as demigods. All the benefits, none of the downsides.

Well, they still CAN suffer adverse affects, kind of like a ship breaking down if you don't treat it well. However, unlike regular humans, shipgirl ailments can generally be reversed/repaired with the right procedures.
