“Coffee?” Denise hands you a cup of coffee as you sleepily try to brush your hair. The other girls are all fine and ready, talking with each other, excited for today's practice even. But last night was an absolute killer. Ugh, you hate those nightmares about aliens. “You look unwell, Ellie. Should I schedule a sick day?”

You down the coffee and let it burn right down your throat and immediately reinvigorate you. “Nope! I'm fine!” You toss the cup away. “Just dandy! Didn't have a nightmare or anything.”

“You had a nightmare?” asks Stack.

“No!” you say.

“She had a nightmare,” says Winona. Goddamn it, Winona. They giggle a little at your expense.

“Oh, you poor thing!” Josephina is at least a bit sympathetic. “What was it about?”

“I did -not- have a nightmare!” you proclaim. “I just- I woke up in the middle of the night and I had trouble getting back to sleep. Okay?! Okay! We're good.” You look at Winona, who zips her lips. Mum's the word, you'll beat it into her if it comes to it. “Now if you excuse me, I gotta get to work.”

With that, you leave with Denise to her...

“Denise?” She looks back, putting on a helmet. “Where's your Kettenkrad?”

“Oh, unfortunately it's in the shop!” says Denise. “But don't worry! I have an alternate method of travel!” She quickly hurries away. Oh, like a car or a bi-

Lang steps into view as she sits on the carriage seat. She holds the reins, with the door into a pretty luxurious coach. She smiles, pointing her thumb into the coach. “Let's go!”

You step into the carriage and sit your butt down on the seat. “Fine. But we're not using this tomorrow. Or ever again.”

“It's a temporary solution!” says Denise as she whips the reins and gets Lang moving. The carriage rocks a bit, obviously the suspension isn't so great in this thing.

“Where did you ever get this?”

“I borrowed it from Abby, she's got lots of horses!” You roll your eyes. Of course she does. Well, hopefully it doesn't draw too much attention.

-

-

It drew a lot of attention.

You don't want to get into details, but Denise was quick to apologize. There were so many people, and there were so many autographs to sign and so many bras and shirts to sign as well. Absolutely trashy. But you did it anyway just to clear the crowd. “I am so sorry.” Denise is genuinely remorseful. “Don't worry, when the Kettenkrad is ready, we'll return the carriage to Abby and that will be that! I'll make it up to you, okay?”

“Okay,” you say quickly. The two of you walk on the catwalks. You look down on the working shifts to see the first couple of floors have been completed. And meeting with you now was your Chief Engineer Athena. “Athena, how are things?”

“We've already completed an additional ten rooms,” she says. “Right now, we're putting the canteen together as well along with the showerroom. I believe that if things go as scheduled, we'll be finished by tod-”

“Hey, hey!” You look past Athena to see a girl wrestling with a pair of Hall Monitors. “Come on, come on, I know her!”

“Oi, don't fecking claim to know people, you don't know nobody! Not even me!” yells one of the Hall Monitors.

“Come on!”

Wait. Oh God, is that Kathy Wheeler. “Hey, hey, Ellie!”

You hold up a hand. “Girls, stop.” The Hall Monitors stop their restraining, then look back to you in surprise. “Kathy, what is it?”

She holds up a folder. “The ultimate prize, are you interested?”

“After work, get me, okay?” She nods, allowing herself to be pushed out of the area by the Hall Monitors.

“After work, will find you!” she says loudly.

Athena squints at you. “The hell was that?”

“Friend of mine, we do a bit of treasure hunting together,” you explain. “What were you saying?”

“Well, we might actually manage to finish the whole block today,” she says. “The wonders of modular construction and technology, eh?” She smirks a bit. “The canteen and the showerroom are being put together and we're just about ready to start assembling a new floor of dorms as well.” Oh, well, that's good. “There's a problem though.” Ugh. There's always a problem. “Crane truck you borrowed from the fishers? We still need it.”

“What?” you ask. “I promised them I'd return it.”

“You promised them you'd return it but not when you'd return it,” she says back matter-of-factly. “Bluntly speaking our replacement crane hasn't showed up and I tried calling up Logistics, it's not here.” Goddamn it.

And just to kick you when you're down. “Oooohohoho! Is our intrepid Lieutenant Commander running into trouble?” says Caldwell as she walks in behind you. “What, we still don't have that crane now?”

“Caldwell. Please don't start.”

She rolls her eyes. “Right, right. I'll repay your gesture of kindness with my complete obedience today, Zumwalt. What do you want me to do?”

I would assume that we would find the fishers by finding the crane, unless it went somewhere it shouldn't in which case we can't just return to them.

I trust Caldwell to oversee the project, she did earn her position by merit, after all and I doubt she'll want to sabotage this one, especially when we can just explain our situation if she did it deliberately.

“Oversee things here until I find that crane, Caldwell.”

She salutes, giving you a smirk. “Alright, ma'am.” As much as you don't want to leave her alone to manage things, she did do her job well enough to compete for this position with you. You're just going to have to trust that she's not going to mess anything up for you or your retinue. You take Denise and hurry along.

The first place to check is Logistics.

-

-

“Let's see... okay, Crane truck order, ordered at 4:33 PM by D. Spunkmeyer on behalf of Lieutenant Commander Zumwalt.” You see the Quartermaster clerk at the delivery headquarters in the Logistics branch of the block. Hundreds of Naval Studies students are waiting on packages, deliveries, mail, the like here. But here, this is where you'd get answers to your missing replacement crane truck.

“Was it delivered?” you ask.

“Hm...” The clerk squints a bit, then quickly puts on her reading glasses. She files through her pages on the computer in front of her. “Actually... no it wasn't! Odd, we usually have these priority delivered for Officers.”

“So where is it then?” you ask.

She types something in on her keyboard. “Vehicular items are usually kept in the motorpool. Hold on, I'll see if I can get the driver to get it to you.” She picks up the phone attached to her computer. “Hey, it's the Quartermaster. Put me through to Motorpool 6?” You lean on her desk a bit, sighing. Logistics. “Oh, hi, Annie!” She clerk twirls her fingers through the phone cord, smiling. “Annie, did you hear? Apparently Cindy's going steady with one of those cute pilots from Kill Devil Hills!” The clerk blushes, giggling. “Oh, I know! I know!” The other voice on the line happily screams and gossips indiscriminately and indeterminably. “Oh, I know. We shouldn't call her a slut though, I mean, they probably have kissed at least once or twice already!”

Denise sits next to you. “Uh, ma'am.”

“Can you believe her train of logic though, how she is going to regularly date someone from another school when we're on an Academyship? I think she thinks he'll visit using his plane?” The other voice asks something. “What plane does he use? Oh, he uses one of the Hudsons, he's a bomber jockey. He's not even a pilot, he's a gunner. I mean- if I wanted a boyfriend, why should I settle for just a gunner, you know?” Another pause. “Yeah, he's small. Actually, he's kind of cute in that way.” She turns her chair away from you, still twirling her finger through the cord. “Yeah, yeah, I know. He's like- he's like a cross between Chris Pratt and Neil Patrick Harris except small.”

You're starting to understand why your crane never got delivered.

You reach across the desk, then turn her chair right back to face you. You stare her right in the eye, obviously not amused.

She blinks, then says, “I gotta go, Annie.” She quickly hangs up. “Okay, sorry. Motorpool 6, crane truck, right?” You nod. “Good, good.” She quickly dials in a number then picks the phone up again. “Hello, Operator, put me through to Motorpool 6 again.” There's a pause. “Yeah, hi. I got Commander Zumwalt here, she needs her truck delivered to the destination provided in the email we gave you last night?” Another pause. “Yes, yes, that email. Okay. Alright, thank you.” She hangs up. “Your truck's being delivered.”

“Thank you.” You stand up with Denise. “Don't leave me hanging again or you'll be put on KP for as long as I'm a Block Officer.”

“Hey, Franky!” One of the other Quartermaster clerks looks over at your clerk. “Franky, did you hear! Apparently Cindy's going on a date with that cute pilot tonight! They're going to go see a movie!” She leans in. “Apparently, Cindy's inviting another girl too to go with them!”

“Really!?” The clerk gasps in surprise. “Oh my God, I-” You fold your arms. She looks up at you, then slowly melts in her seat, twiddling her fingers. “I gotta get to work.”

-

-

Your crane truck finally arrives where it's supposed to be. “Oh, there you are!” Caldwell looks down at you from the catwalk as you ride on the crane truck down to your work area. “Finally, Zumwalt! I was beginning to worry you were taking your lunch break for another hour.” Bite me, Caldwell.

Once you walk aboard the catwalk, you nod. “Yeah, lemme take over. Caldwell.” She hands you the megaphone, sighing a bit in reluctance. You swipe it from her. “Thank you.” You lift it up. “Alright, attention everyone. I'm back. Let's get things under way now and finish things on schedule.”

“Alright!” everyone calls.

Good, good. You look to see another room being lifted up and then be slotted into place among the girders. A team of engineers then start to bolt and weld it down into place. Thank goodness for modularity.

You point to Caldwell. “Caldwell, go send the fisher's truck back.”

“Why me?” she asks.

“Because I told you to, do it.” She sighs, walking past you.

You hold onto the railing and watch as your students go. Yes, yes. Like a well-oiled machine. They all construct rooms, move furniture in, weld rooms into place, attach more girders and slot more floors in. Everything as planned.

-

-

It is now 2 PM and nobody is doing anything. Why?

Because everything is completely done. You're sitting now in the completely finished canteen as several students goof around, hang out, play on their phones, the works. You, your retinue, and Caldwell all sit at a table checking your Officer's Pads for details. No new orders yet so far.

AND IT'S DRIVING YOU INSANE, THIS IS NOT AS PLANNED!

“Maybe we should take an early day off,” says Athena. “It won't count as a vacation day though so you'd probably have to ask the Captain...”

“Maybe you should ask the Captain again for more orders,” says Tessa. “See if that helps.”

You decide to text the Captain through the Officer's Pad for the fifth time. “By the way, Athena.” She looks up. “How was Caldwell today?”

“You're asking her how-” You shush Caldwell.

“She was fine,” says Athena. “Got everyone working as it should be.”

“She didn't pay you, did she?” you ask.

“Please, I don't bribe lower class workers to speak well of me!” Caldwell huffs at the thought of it. “I am a perfectly capable Officer, just admit it.” No.

“She was good.” Athena shrugs. “I don't know what else you want from me. I can't judge leadership OUTSIDE of a tank.” That-... huh. You look over at Caldwell, and she huffs again, turning her nose up and away from you. Whatever.

Finally, you receive a ping.

> NEW ORDERS:
> Take rest of the day off. Very good job.

Oh.

Caldwell sighs, standing up. “Well, that's our cue to leave then. I bid you farewell!” Caldwell looks over at you. “And you. Bye.” Well. Fuck you too then. You relay the text to all other shift leaders in your work party as well. Once the text goes through, everyone starts to leave immediately.

Carver however, walks over to you. “Commander. I just want to say thank you for trusting me to be part of your shift. I know I was only assigned to you and you didn't personally select me, but thank you for giving me a chance to prove myself to you!” She smiles happily. “I hope we work together again soon!”

“I hope we do too.” You fold your arms. “You did good, Carver. If you want, you can come with me if you got no other plans.” She tilts her head, blinking in surprise. “We could use some new crews in Tankery maybe too if you want.”

“Well...” She shrugs. “I'll think about it. You got practice today, right?” You nod. “Yeah, I'll might come around and visit, see what's what.”

Hilda walks up to you. “Nice recruiting bit.”

“Hey, just helping the team.”

And with that, Kathy runs into the canteen, along with several of her dogs. “Ellie, Ellie!” She quickly runs up to you and your retinue. Before you can say anything, Athena and Tessa quickly bow out. That just left Hilda, Mulcahy, and Denise. Oh great. “Glad I caught you! It's time for the discovery of a lifetime!”

“Oh?” you say. “What is it?”

“I found this folder.” She opens up the milky tan folder for you to see. “Most of the stuff is illegible because of a water leak, but I read that something very valuable to the US Government is apparently here on the ship! It's an e-y qui!” she explains.

“A what?” you ask.

“An ey qui! That's all I can make out but apparently the government stopped looking for it in the 80s during some of the more rundown times of LGA. But, I bet you we can find it! What do you say?”

> “Alright, I got time before practice. Let's go.”

“So this is-” Hilda flinches at some dripping grime off the ceiling. “This is what you do with Kathy?”

All of you had decided to venture deeper into LGA's vast depths, places where even the expansion projects haven't been slated to go due to the insane disrepair these areas have seen. Following you were several of Kathy's dogs, who happily lead the way, sniffing out and scaring away rats and other vermin.

“Yeah,” you say. “Do you know what exactly we're looking for, Kathy?”

“Not really.” What? You look at her as she continues to rifle through the folder. “E-Y QUI is like some some kind of government thing. Maybe LGA was transporting something and they just lost it or something.”

“Just lost it?” asks Hilda. “How do you lose something on a ship this big!?”

“Pretty easily actually,” says Mulcahy.

You nod at that. “All Academyships older than two decades have this problem of disrepair in their lower depths as the society moves upwards towards upper decks. See, initially, an Academyship is actually launched incomplete. Topside won't have its roads, or its foliage, or its parks, or buildings. Instead, you house the students below decks until the grass grows and the adults move in and set up businesses. Then things move upwards. Of course, that's changing now, but that's how it was back in the 20th century.”

Denise sweeps her flashlight around. “It's so dark and dank though. What are we expecting to find here?”

“Hopefully, the find of a lifetime!” says Kathy. One of the dogs barks, pointing up ahead. “This way, let's go.”

You all lightly run towards where the dog pointed, then find a large steel door in front of you. Not just any large steel door, but quite possibly one of the thickest steel doors you've ever seen. “Whoa. Look at that,” says Hilda.

Kathy presses her ear against the door, shutting her eyes. “... feels thick. Insanely thick.” She taps it a bit. “Bit of lead in the construction too. Huh.” She can tell if its lead or not by the sound? “The chamber around this door must be leadlined. But why?”

“Don't ask me, I only work here,” you say. “How thick would you say that door is?”

“Feels like a solid eight inches,” she says.

“What, are they transporting King Kong or something?” asks Denise.

[1/2]
>>
>>794528
[2/2]

“Do you see any visible ways to open the door?” Kathy points out something. It appears to be some kind of primitive keypad and a locking mechanism to the side of the door. “Oh, right.” You try the keypad. The buttons though are completely stuck, probably from rust and slime. Damn it. And even if they weren't stuck, there doesn't seem to be an electricity running through this place. “Hm. This is going to be tough.”

“If we had equipment, it'd take at least a day just to get through the door,” says Kathy.

“Oh, great, great, can uh...” Hilda shivers a bit, looking around in fright. “Can we go then? I-... I'd like to not be eaten by anything in here.”

You decide to spend a bit of time exploring around. Though any signs and labels indicating what's inside the chamber are long rotted and torn away by time, water, and probably rats. The dogs stand an eternal vigil around as Kathy lays down some glowsticks to light up the room around the chamber. It turns out this entire room actually stretches around the chamber in a circular fashion. It appears the chamber itself is actually quite cylindrical.

Interesting. You get the feeling that's supposed to be important but yet...

“Have you found anything?” yells Kathy.

“Nope! Denise, Hilda, Mulcahy!?”

“I found something!” yells Denise. You all quickly run over. There, Denise rifles through a chest of drawers next to a desk, abandoned save for an old typewriter (probably useless) a lamp (also useless) and some rotted papers. “Let's see...”

“Out of my way!” Kathy shoves her aside, looking in. “Let's see. Aha!” She pulls out a large rifle. “Whoa!”

“Whoa, whoa!” You stand back. “Hey, don't point that at us!”

Kathy grins. “Oh my God! It's M14 rifle! Wow! A collector will pay big bucks for this if the action hasn't been tampered with. And it's in mint condition!”

“Okay, okay, just- it looks loaded, couldn't you not?” you ask.

“Fine, fine.” Kathy pulls the magazine out, then clears the chamber. “What else is in there?”

Denise looks in, as does Mulcahy. “Hey!” Denise pulls out a comic book. “What's this, Action Comics?”

Kathy's ear twitch. “Did someone say Action Comics?” She carefully takes the comic from Denise's hand.

“Oh, it's just Action Comics #101, boring.” She hands it back to Denise, who gleefully takes it back. “Still... is there anything in there that could say what's in the chamber?”

“I dunno,” says Denise. They keep rifling through. More books, more papers to read through.

Suddenly, you receive a text. Hm?

We should check some schematics/deck plans and find out what's here.

Shouldn't we spend time with Winona tomorrow? Hold to our promise and all that.

If we can convince her to come on down then by all means, 2 birds one stone.

“We have to go. Well- I need to go to practice. You can stay here, Kathy, can you do that?”

Kathy nods, cradling her M14 a bit. “With pleasure! I'll have a friend of mine deliver me some tools and equipment and we can cut through these doors like a hot knife through butter!” She grins, shaking your hand. “Go to practice, Ellie, show them what you're made of.” Uh, yeah. “Laters!”

“You're late,” says Griselda with a smile. That is not the reaction you were expecting. “Today we're doing strength training. Oh, right, right.” She's already dressed out in PT gear while you and your retinue walk beside her. Everyone takes laps around the training grounds, dressed in PT gear, being drilled by the Roberts sisters and Miss McPherson as well. Naval Studies Rescue, being the people they are, are in front and look barely tired while everyone else appears to struggle.

“I'm sorry,” you say. “I just-”

“Don't be.” Griselda grabs your arms, a wide smile on her face. “Listen. I got us a new sponsorship, a really good one that pays even more than Winona's Dad!”

“What, really?”

“Yeah!” Griselda laughs a little. “Th- they called me up last night. They saw my tapes from the exhibition, really liked my conviction for whatever reason, I don't know. But they liked what they saw, they reviewed the tapes from our other matches. They're sending us over 50k! That's enough to get some of the teams the conversions they need! And they'll have options for sending more in the future!”

“Oh.” You blink. That's actually a lot of money, wow. “Wh- what company is it?”

“The Yutani Manufacturing Company! They're a startup over in Japan working on some really cool hi-tech stuff. They're subcontractors to NASA to help build the Space Shuttles in fact.” Oh, you've never heard of them. “Isn't that great!?”

“That's great!” you declare. “Really, it is! I can't wait to see what Yutani has to offer us-” She hands you a shirt. “... what's this.”

Griselda bites her lip a bit. “Well, first off. It's uh-... look, I can discuss this later, but put it on! It should be your size!” You look to your retinue, and they all shrug in confusion. Well, alright. You pull the t-shirt over your head and onto yourself. “See! It fits!”

“It's kind of tight around the chest,” you say, tugging on it.

“Y-... yeah.” Griselda blushes a bit. “Real tight, uh-, how do you like it?”

“Well it's...” You look down. “Is that their logo?” It's a big white Y superimposed on a black circle, with the motto “Building Better”. You look up at Griselda. “Don't tell me this is just the start.”

“It's just the start,” she says. “But don't worry. I'm negotiating things right now with their liaison over the phone. I'll try not to do anything too extreme. But for now, all they care about is if you wear the shirt and show it off sometimes. You should, it's uh...” Griselda blinks, gawking at your chest a bit again. “It's really tight.”

“I'll say.” Now that you think about this, this t-shirt does feel a size or two too small. Whatever, you hurry to join up with your crew.

“Hey, Ellie!” Winona smiles at you as you join in the run. “Wow, nice shirt! Where can I get one!?” she says as she and every other crew wear the same shirt.

“Is she making you wear this too?” you ask.

“Mine's a bit too big!” says Stack as she ties the bottom of it up. Winona has already done the same, exposing a bit of her midriff. Josephina's is too small, but only in length and not width like yours, which in general exposes her midriff just like Stack's. Only Ingrid's appears to fit properly. “This sucks! I can't believe Griselda's making us sell out to some corporate chumps!”

“Corporate sponsorships are what makes sports now, this isn't 1930,” says Ingrid.

“Still, we better not paint our tanks with their logo!” says Stack.

“What do you think of it?” asks Winona. “I mean, I don't mind, the shirts are cute, and I hear their jackets are nice too, real cozy!”

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about our tanks getting sponsorships on them.

But, we have to find cash however we can. So, we'll make the best of it. Besides, we've got some of our own money making plans that might help us out, even a little.

“Just as long as we get the money and they send me a shirt that fits properly, I don't really mind. Besides, if we need more money later, we can always just do our thing with raising money around LGA.”

“Right,” says Winona. “Iris was telling me about that, apparently you might try like a pin-up calendar type deal.”

“It's not going to be a pin-up calendar!” you yell.

“Are we doing a pin-up calendar!?” yells Suvorov.

“I think I heard we were doing a pin-up calendar, do we have to wear undies or swimsuits!?” Dalia shouts.

“No, we're not doing a pin-up ANYTHING!” you shout back.

“Aw, dang it,” says Benny. “I was looking forward to that.”

“SHUT UP!” yells Regina. “YOU WANT TO GIVE THE BOYS MORE REASONS TO OGLE US!?”

And on cue, several boys sitting on their jeeps and trucks hoot and holler as you pass by on the track. Catcallers. “Wooohooo! Nice shirts, girls!”

“Yeah, hey! I didn't know the Yutani logo was animated, it really bounces!” yells another boy.

“Hey, you got any shirts!? I'll take one of yours right off your back!”

Ugh, vultures.

“Oi! Get out of here you little rabblerousers!” A pair of Hall Monitors approach them, wielding their telescopic batons and their Irish fury. The boys quickly excuse themselves and hurry into their cars. “Oi, oi! No fecking excuse the lotta you! Get back here so I can administer a proper punishment right to yer fecking bums you little maggots!” She whacks the chain link fence, making it shake as they speed away. “That's right, run! All you're good for anyway! Little bogies!”

You sigh. Good grief.

[2/2]

All of you pal around in the showers, with today's strength training finished. Giap and the Light Music Club were busy cooking dinner for now, probably more Vietnamese stuff you gather. You don't mind, Viet stuff is pretty good, you had plenty of it back in New Jersey when money was tight. A little old Viet lady always loaned you one of her delicious sandwiches. You can just remember it now.

“Stack.” Josephina looks at Stack as she lays back in the bath. “Don't wear your Yutani T-Shirt like a shower cap.”

“It's all it's good for anyway,” says Stack. “Besides, sponsors will send more if they're really serious.”

“That's still disrespect of free stuff,” you say. “You don't just toss free stuff like that, Stack.” Your mom and dad always told you to respect things that people gave to you for free. This was making you a little angry.

“Mmmm...” Stack slaps it on the floor. Whatever. You look around, then sigh disappointedly.

“What's wrong?” asks Winona.

“Well, it's just- I invited someone to come and watch our Tankery practice and maybe even join the team,” you say. “But I didn't see them today so-” You hear the shower door open.

And inside comes Carver. She covers her eyes with her arm, feeling around with her other arm. “D- don't mind me!” she says quickly. All eyes are on her. “I-... I heard you all were in here. I'm looking for Griselda Pool!”

Griselda raises her hand. “Present.”

“O- okay, I'll come to you.” As much as you want to tell her that we're all girls here and there's nothing to be embarrassed about, you decide to just watch her fumble as she blindly tries to navigate the showerroom without accidentally groping someone. She fails the minute she takes a step forward. “Oh, oh my god! I'm so sorry!”

“What?” Serina turns around, unaware that her butt had been grabbed.

“Nothing, uh... c- can- can someone help me, I- uh... I don't want to cause a scene,” she says as she causes a scene.

“Just look around, Carver. We're all girls here. Nothing to be embarrassed about.” Carver stops just short of stepping into a bath. Thank God.

“O-... okay.” She slowly lowers her arms, looking around. Her face is completely red from embarrassment as she ducks down and starts walking over to Griselda. A few of the girls giggle at her expense. She stands tall and proud but incredibly embarrassed. “Griselda. My name is Hadley Carver. I'd uh... I'd like to join the Tankery team.”

Griselda blinks. “Oh, really?” She smiles a little. “Do you know anything about tanks?”

“... no,” says Carver.

“Hm. Iris, Ellie.” You stand up out of the bath and walk over along with Iris. “Hadley Carver, was it?” She nods. “Hadley, you should probably consider reading up on tanks first, get a feel for them first. Do you have a crew behind you?”

“Uh. Well.” Carver blinks, twiddling her fingers. “No. I don't.” Oh? “I- I tried to ask some people in my shift but uh... they didn't think I'd actually do it so here I am alone so... yeah.” Carver clears her throat. “I mean, I can pilot a tank by myself, right?”

You all look at each other. Iris says, “You should probably come back with a crew, Hadley.”

“Well... can I at least have a spot though?”

Tell her Griselda's the Captain, she makes the call. Give us a minute and we'll get her decision. Just wait outside so you can stop glowing red.
>>
>>795703

For now, I think it'd would be fine to grant her a provisional spot on the team. She'd need to asemble herself a crew, naturally, but she could always spend some time with the team to learn the ins and outs of tankery, what tanks do what, etc. Basically she'd be extra help around the team and could fill in for sick or injured crew members in matches too.

I am sure Griselda could be comfortable with that at least. Though it is partialy her call, just like it is ours and Iris' as officers.
>>
>>795703
> “Sure.”
Like we'd turn down a potential crew. If nothing else she could help out in one of our understaffed tanks until she can find a crew of her own. Could help her learn the ropes.

In case it wasn't clear.
>>
>>795742
If Griselda hesitates,we can push for this. There's no reason not to take Carver on, and Griselda's tank is currently undercrewed.

And as much as I'd like to get that team back together, right now she needs another person. And that time in the tank will get her experience.

There is no downside. We can even take the position of forcing the issue and owning up to it, so her old crew doesn't feel like Griselda's moved on
>>
>>795703
> “Sure.”
Griselda has an opening you could fill untill you get your own team.
>>
> Other

“Griselda. Maybe she'd fill in a provisional spot on the team, until she assembles herself a team at least,” you say. “She could spend some time with us, naturally. Learn as much as she can. Be a bit of help, or even fill in for spots we can't fill. It's up to you though, Griselda.”

“I was thinking the same thing.” Griselda stands up, and immediately Carver's eyes widen in awe of Griselda's amazing body. “Alright. We'll give you a chance, Hadley. If you can get a crew together by Friday, great. But if not, well, that's a shame. Maybe we can find a place for you beforehand, but until then, come by tomorrow. We'll be doing a briefing on this weekend's match with Mariano Da Silva.”

“O... okay.” She steps back. “I'll uh... I'll just go.” With that, she quickly bolts and leaves.

“Curious girl,” says Iris.

“She's got potential,” you say. “Don't worry.”

“I trust you on that, Ellie.” Griselda sighs, heaving her chest a bit. “Hopefully we can have someone to fill in that Jackson though.”

-

“Hey look!” Stack runs up to you as you make your sleeping bag nice and tidy. “Yutani sent us some extra large T-shirts!” She swirls around, her big giant t-shirt acting like a big dress. “Haha! Okay, I love this!”

“Do they have any in my size?” you ask.

“I didn't see unfortunately, but I got you one too!” She immediately slaps the XXL t-shirt in your arms. Um. Okay. “Put it on, it'll make you look sexy!”

“No, don't bother with the XXL!” says Winona as she lays seductively on her sleeping bag. She wears a slightly long t-shirt just long enough to cover her crotch but just tight enough to show off her curves. “Go with one of these, it's a plumber's type of t-shirt, keeps them from exposing their buttcrack when they work, and it's amazing!”

You roll your eyes. “Do you two ever think that life doesn't revolve around being sexy sometimes?”

“It feels nice being sexy though!” Winona proclaims. You sigh. Of course.

You open her office door and find her talking to her cellphone as she gets busy dressing in a nightshirt. “Yes, yes, I know Mr. Yutani.” She tries to squeeze phone between her shoulder and her ear but it's too thin, and it slips out back into her hand. She looks over to you and nonverbally asks you to button her blouse, uh, okay. You quickly do it up for her, one by one. “Yes, I am aware. I know we have a match coming up. No, I don't think that painting the Yutani logo on our tanks is the way to go. I mean, not even ZES does that.” An indignant voice responds on the other end. “Yes, I know you paid us fifty thousand, but there's a limit to these things. We're already starting with the t-shirts, I can probably have one of my girls maybe start in a commercial or something, but...” He responds again. “Okay, okay. Yeah. Alright, er, sorry. Yeah. We'll talk later.” With that, she hangs up.

“Sponsorship thing?” you ask.

“They want us to fly the Yutani logo alongside the LGA one on our tanks and be sure to promote Yutani products before and after each match. But I told them that's way too much,” she says. “We're trying to sort things out. Did you need something?”

“Yeah, I came to ask you about a money making opportunity.”

“Oh, right the calendar thing,” she says. She knows? “Uh, Serafina told me about it. I'm surprised you had the idea of doing pin-ups.”

“I-” You blush a little. “It's not pin-ups! We're not doing anything lewd!”

“Oh.” Griselda smirks a bit, sitting down on her bed. “Alright then. What did you have in mind?”

“Well, one for us officers together, one for each crew, then a special December something or other. Maybe posters too. I was hoping Kit Blumenthal would help us with that maybe.”

“Yeah. Yeah.” Griselda rubs her forehead a bit. “Sorry, Ellie, I'm just a bit- I'm a little stressed right now. But listen, you have my blessing. If need be, I can even rent out some photographers, we can set aside a day for a photo shoot perhaps. But right now I'm just a bit... I- it's tough, sorry.”

“Oh? Tell me about it.” You sit down next to Griselda.

She sighs, then leans back on her bed, allowing for a bit of that therapist visual thing to develop. “Well, I'm just caught up in a lot of stuff you know? Lot of stressful things. First there's the Yutani stuff, then there's finding out more ways to make money. As good as the Yutani thing is, it's not uh... that money's not going to last long, I gotta pay for repairs to the tanks, I gotta pay for conversions, all that jazz. And I have to pay for new tanks too. Heck, we're still half short of the maximum crews for the regular season.”

“And we've made it work,” you say.

“Yeah, we have,” she says. “And it's a real miracle.”

“You've helped it along.”

She sighs. “Plus, there's my sister too. She and I still don't talk as often as we used to. But the way things are between us, you'd think she'd really want me to lose the tournament or something.” … uh. “And you know what, I'm actually really stressing out on the Mariano Da Silva match this weekend, Ellie.”

“Why?”

“If we get swept or get forced into a draw. That's another week we spend in the Wild Card spot. That's one more day of tanking in the post season, and that's single elimination stuff. If we lose the Wild Card match, there's no second match for elimination or anything, we're just done.” She sighs. “And then there's all this accounting work on trying to keep all parts in order, all our ammo together, day in, day out. It's work, work- I- I don't feel like a person anymore. I feel like I'm destined to die in this office like a cubicle monkey!”

“Oh, don't say that.” You lean back as well, biting your lip. What do you say? Well... “I mean. You could always take a day off.”
