You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

You're currently slinking your way out of the Sol System and making your way back to Eridani. You've already informed the relevant Accord authorities about that old and forgotten nanomachine lab on the Moon. Well, maybe Intelligence would be better equipped to investigate it.

In either case, once you get back-

"Captain." Lida speaks up from her station. "I'm picking up traffic on the local Eridani system patrol frequency."

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow. "What are they complaining about?"

"Looks like reports of pirate activity on the fringes of the system." Lida says. "They're requesting support."

"There's nobody else?" You frown.

"All of the other commanders are already out on assignment." Lida explains.

Damn, you were really hoping to get docked with the station and catch up with Frolaytia about quite a lot of matters.

"Well, Cap?" Amy asks, her hands on the controls. "We can always drop out a little early."

>We're still on our own mission, head for the station.

"Well, tell them we can drop by and help them out for a bit." You say to Lida.

"Got it." Lida turns back to her console, and then raises her head again. "They're giving us the pick of the trouble spots to investigate."

"Well, tell us where to go." Amy shrugs.

You look at the updated holomap, which showed three blinking points scattered around the Eridani system.

>Outer system edges. It's just bare and lonely space out there. Perfect for surveillance.
>Moon cluster. Eridani has a lot of moons and natural satellites near it to provide cover for ambushers.
>Outer planets. Some of the system's outer, less populated settlements prove to be fairly vulnerable.

"Let's patrol the outlying settlements." You say. "Those are always prime targets for pirates."

"Gotcha." Amy nods.

"Transmitting." Lida nods.

"Thanks for the help, Gullinbursti." The Sector Patrol operator replies over the comms. "Normally we wouldn't ask this..."

"Hey, no worries. I used to do this all the time." You assure him.

"All right, dropping out of FTL!" Amy warns.

With that, the universe winks back into existence, showing you a vista of stars and planets.

"Lida, what have we got here?" You ask.

"Picking up lots of contacts on the sensors." Lida announces. "But if there's any pirates, they're blending in with the regular system traffic. No way to tell them apart yet."

"Should we flush them out, then?" Bradford asks. "Put a freeze on the local traffic?"

"And piss everybody off?" Elsa points out. "Assuming that it's not a false alarm?"

"We shouldn't be beholding to random public opinion." Bradford retorts.

"We can just continue to monitor their movements and comms traffic to look for anything unusual." Lida suggests.

"Which would take FOREVER." Amy rolls her eyes. "For all we know the pirates are already getting ready for their attack!"

"And then we can pounce on them, then." Lida says.

"Two contacts!" Lida yelps.

"Where are they headed? Which planet?" Bradford barks.

"They're headed for US." Lida blinks as her hands start flying across her console. "Wait, I'm picking up more contacts emerging from behind local satellites and shipping lanes! I'm counting at least twelve corvette class ships bearing down on us!"

"Totally surrounded, huh?" Elsa grins as she cracks her knuckles. "Guess it doesn't matter where we shoot!"

"Captain, these aren't normal pirates." Bradford observes.

"That's pretty clear, Bradford." You grimace. Regular pirates would never attack a patrol ship, much less a full scale warship, unless they absolutely had to. The fac that this many ships were coming at you from ambush position indicated a level of training and organization beyond that of normal pirates. Confederates? Privateers?

Well, you'll have to worry about that later.

"Battle stations!" You bark. "Shields and weapons up!"

"What's the plan, Cap?" Amy asks, her hands back on the controls.

>Fight in one of the debris belts. It'll be dangerous, but it'll hamper their numbers advantage.

"Get us into the debris field, Amy!" You order. "We can get rid of their numbers advantage in there!"

"Oh jeez, sure thing." Amy grimaces as she turns the ship towards an old mining belt.

Unfortunately, it looks like your ambushers anticipated this, and a squadron of four ships immediately move in to blockade you. Preliminary scans seemed to indicated they weren't carrying any exotic technology, but they were hauling a large amount of missiles and a few heavy, forward facing railguns.

"Amy, full power to the engines!" You bark. "Elsa, get our missiles configured for interception mode!"

"Got it!" Elsa nods as she arms the Gullinbursti's launchers.

Meanwhile, up ahead, the enemy corvettes begin to vomit missiles, dozens of them flying at your ship like angry, flaming hornets. Gullinbursti responds in kind with with its own angry little hornets nest.

Explosions ripple in front the bow of the ship, dazzling your eyes and your ship's sensors, but likely doing the same to the enemy corvettes as well. That would probably explain why they didn't fire their heavy railguns at you.

Unfortunately, Elsa's defensive missile net couldn't quite catch all of the incoming missiles. You count at least four slamming against the shields, illuminating the Gullinbursti in blue light.

But you're past the blockade and into the debris field, the floating leftovers of a long past mining operation. Amy effortlessly loops into the belt, weaving the Gullinbursti through the discarded rocks.

"They're slowing down." Lida announces. "Regrouping into a single force. No doubt they're going to try and come at us all at once."

"Well, I'd love to see them try in this shit storm." Amy grunts as she eyes the floating debris.

"Captain, I suggest we contact Sector Patrol for assistance." Bradford recommends.

"These guys are pros. Sector Patrol will just get ripped apart." You shake your head. "We'll have to handle these guys ourselves."

"All right, Captain." Bradford nods. "So how do we handle a dozen corvettes, then?"

"Well..." You pause to consider your options. You had your ion cannon, which was pretty damn powerful, and could probably punch through the smaller asteroids with no issue, but you needed to be pointing at the targets to fire it, which limited your options of maneuver. That could open you up to attacks from their heavy railguns. Your missiles, on the other hand, could be fired from any orientation, though it wasn't guaranteed that they'd be able to navigate through the debris field. Same went for their missiles, too.

"Amy, just focus us on dancing through this debris!" You order. "Elsa, you're weapons free on the missiles! Get in any shots that you can!"

"All riiiiiiight!" Elsa grins with anticipation as she unlocks ALL of the missile tubes.

"Just be sure not to launch them all at once." Bradford reminds her sternly. "The assembler isn't designed to replenish our magazine in combat conditions."

"Right, riiiight." Elsa grumbles.

Once again, Gullinbursti is cloaked in fire and smoke as missiles belch from her launchers. You see the missiles twirl, spin, and weave as they try to negotiate their way through the debris field while at the same time finding their targets.

Explosions ripple across the field as missiles impact both the asteroids and their targets. You see one corvette that had wandered in too close eat three missiles head on, practically disintegrating.

Another corvette attempts to evade, but the pilot lacked Amy's situational awareness, as his evasive bank slams him right into an asteroid.

Meanwhile, exploding missiles and asteroids batter the remaining corvettes with shrapnel and debris, causing all sorts of minor damage, but they begin to respond with their missiles in kind. Gullinbursti's shields take more of a beating, but thankfully all the debris manages to absorb the brunt of the missile volleys.

"Wait a minute...." Lida squints. "Captain, I think we have a problem."

"What kind of problem?" You lean forward, trying not to get distracted by the explosions all around the ship.

"I think I might be picking something up, but there's too much interference here." Lida glowers. "We need to either clear the debris field or boost our sensor power."

"We're kinda busy right now, Lida!" Amy grunts as she noses Gullinbursti down to dive beneath a particularly massive rock.

"All right, Lida, you've got clearance to boost sensor power." You say.

"Roger." Lida nods and hits a key.

Suddenly, the sensor board lights up with much greater clarity. Of course, it picks up the nearby asteroids as well as the attacking corvettes, but further out, you start picking up distant planets and ships on the farther edges of the system as the sensors run at full power.

"Found it." Lida points and one contact that seems to be trying to leave the system at maximum speed. "Its transponder tags it as a cargo freighter, but it's traveling outside the regulated traffic lanes."

"Could just be somebody trying to dodge the system tolls." Bradford stumbles a bit as another missile impacts just a bit too close to the ship. "We have bigger problems."

"Hmmm, well, doesn't it seem like a bit of a coincidence?" Elizabeth muses, materializing out of nowhere like she tended to do. "We pick up that ship right when we get jumped and Sector Patrol is too spread thin to respond?"

It did strike you as odd, but you were in a freaking space battle right now. You weren't sure if you could spare the time to investigate.

"Full throttle, Amy!" You instruct. "Put in everything you got!"

"Yessssss!" Amy's eyes flash as now she's able to finally pull all the stops. "Going FULL THROTTLE!"

The burst of acceleration is so sudden, that the Gullinbursti's inertial dampers couldn't quite compensate, and the whole ship lurches from the G-forces, sending everybody who was standing stumbling and throwing you around in your seat for a bit.

Gullinbursti's engines roar with azure light and the ship jets forward, charging like her namesake. You see the distance between you and the fleeing ship shrinking quickly while the distance from the corvettes grows.

"All right, that's as fast as she's gonna get." Amy notes. "Those corvettes are gonna catch up to us in a few minutes, so whatever you do, make it fast."

"Tank, you ready for boarding?" You ask over the comms.

One click. Tank was always ready.

"Good. Get armed and get to the shuttle. It's gonna be a rough ride." You warn.

Tank clicks in response.

"Ya gonna go with your boooooyfriend?" Amy teases.

"You just love doing those boarding actions together~!" Elsa joins in.

"Well, at least I got a boyfriend." You shoot back with a smug grin.

"Yeah yeah, whatever." Amy grumbles.

"Captain, we've got a lot of flux built up." Lida warns. "Maybe we should use this chance to vent while we're out of the corvettes' range. Gullinbursti's momentum should keep us ahead of them."

"But if that other ship's got any kind of weapons, we'd be in biiiig trouble." Elsa warns.

Well... if it were ME? I'd have weapons. >Does tank have a booster system in that overbuilt SPESS MAHREEN armor? We could fly past, venting our Flux in it's direction. The heat, while painting us, should make Tank seem invisible. This also keeps us relatively safe from fire. Then we keep the corvette fleet busy whilst Tank figures the tanker out. (Also, will we ever know what happened to our old ship?)
>>

>>Vent your excess flux

10 Corvettes? It's going to be a real slog, so we'll need all the spare flux we can get.
>>

Why do you think Tank is going alone? We've got assault shuttles and combat drones that are normally used in boarding actions.

Honestly forgot about the shuttles, and I thought the anti-grav on the drones would be good enough for that maneuver.

"Lida, prepare to flux vent once the boarding shuttle is clear." You instruct. "Elsa, get those missiles ready. They'll be the only way we can defend ourselves if that ship ends up being armed."

"Roger!" Elsa nods.

"Venting." Lida announces as she hits the vent button.

The bridge lights dim as the systems go into low power mode, the flux core temporarily powering down so that the excess flux can safely be vented into space.

Meanwhile, up ahead, you can see the boarding shuttle blazing ahead towards the fleeing cargo ship. Immediately, you could see camouflaged mass driver turrets reveal themselves, throwing kinetic slugs at Gullinbursti's path. Thankfully, these were just the lighter turrets, so they don't inflict catastrophic damage, but you do feel the hits as they pound against Gullinbursti's hull.

At least they were too busy firing at you to focus on Tank's shuttle, which latches on to the ship right when everything starts to light up again.

"All right, systems are go." Lida confirms.

"Haha! Let's do this!" Amy grips the controls, ready to get Gullinbursti moving again.

Meanwhile, the corvettes are starting to catch up, and it'll only be mere seconds before they're in weapons range.

"Turn and engage!" You order. "Give them everything you've got!"

"Well we've got a little surprise for them!" Amy grins. "You ready, Elsa?"

"You bet your ass I do!" Elsa nods.

"2, 3, 1, GO!" Amy yells happily as she hits the figurative brakes on Gullinbursti, using the retro thrusters to negate Gullinbursti's speed while flipping it around in a full 180 degree roll.

At the same time, Elsa hits the ion cannon. The azure beam lances out from the ship's belly as it spins around, turning into was was essentially a giant laser sword as the beam arcs down. The corvettes are so tightly packed in formation while chasing you, they can't dodge, and four corvettes are instantly melted to slag.

Six left.

"Good job, girls!" You grin.

"That's half their fleet down. You think they've had enough?" Bradford wonders.

"Attention, hostile ships." You speak. This is Captain Wellings of the Gullinbursti. You have no chance of winning this battle. Surrender now and power down your ships, and your lives will be spared."

There's a brief hesitation, until you get a simple yet effective response.

"Victory or death!" One of the corvette captains yells.

And the corvettes resume their attack, launching missiles and railgun rounds.

"So much for peace!" Elsa grimaces as she starts launching missiles in response. However, the corvettes have no been worked up in a frenzy, flying about in all directions.

"Amy get us some distance!" You bark.

"Trying to!" Amy grunts as she tries to maneuver Gullinbursti as she gets hammered from all directions. However, being in an up close fight like this, it would be tough to outrun corvettes.

"Elsa, do we have any more missiles?!" You glance to your weapons officer.

"Running low!" Elsa frowns.

"Get us some more speed!" You bark.

"But the engines-" Amy begins to protest.

"Do it!"

Amy hits the throttles to full again and Gullinbursti boosts out of the melee. However, before you can do anything else...

"YEEEEHAAAAAAW!" Carly whoops as the Longclaw barrels in from nowhere, its thick armored prow actually ramming one of the corvettes and shattering it like glass. A rain of mass driver rounds shreds a second corvette.

"C-Carly?!" You blink.

"Looked like ya needed some help!" Carly laughs.

Meanwhile, another Accord destroyer, which you recognized as the Flasher, Captain Richards' ship, practically melds out of the darkness and knocks out three more corvettes with her close range scatter lasers.

"Ah, it looks like we returned in the nick of time." Frolaytia's amused voice buzzes on the comms. "It looked like you were in a bit of a jam, so we decided to help out."

"Thanks, we were in a tight spot there." You admit. Now that you think about it, Gullinbursti really wasn't set up for close up fights.

"Well, we're all part of the same team now, aren't we?" Frolaytia says sweetly.

"Yeah, and now Big Sis owes me one!" Carly cackles.

Wonderful.

"And I see your man managed to capture the ship they were escorting. That's good." Frolaytia continues.

"Didn't think those Confed assholes would actually try and lift data from us." Carly grumbles.

"What, Confederates?" You blink in surprise.

"We have quite a lot to talk about when we get back." Frolaytia chuckles. "It seems like we've finally gotten an idea of what the Hegemony is after, and it looks the Confederates do, too."

"A real clusterfuck, it is." Carly sighs.
