Breakfast was quiet without Knives around. The blackness on your arm was still encroaching up to your body. You were actually laying on top of your arm while you slept on some ratty mattress which probably cut the feeling of anything from it. But even now, a few hours later, you still couldn't properly feel things in the afflicted arm. Things were going to get worse if you weren't going to cure it.

Thankfully, Gatsby was busy working on the device which would help cure your arm. It was a bracer of some sort, with the Jewel embedded dead center in its boxy, ugly, and yet somewhat charming appearance. It reminded you of a tank turret, with a little tunnel for where your arm would go. Little beams of blue shot out from Gatsby's eyes as he apparently works on constructing it. You watch closely as this happens. If he sabotages anything to make you subservient to him like making it deliberately ineffective or making it permanently attached to your arm, things are going to get messy.

You look around the warehouse. Anneliese was busy patrolling around, while Val simply stares at you from one of the upper offices. “You never told them how your parents died, huh?” asks Gatsby.

“Huh?”

Gatsby looks at you as he works. “You never told them how your parents died. How they were killed by the camorra.” You purse your lips a bit. “I mean, the camorra are quite ruthless to those that wrong them, a police officer especially who refuses to turn a blind eye to their activities.”

“What are you saying?” you ask.

“You keep secrets from them, Bomber,” he says. He hops up onto the bracer, looking you in the eye. “Question is, why keep that a secret?”

“They... they never asked. And even if they did, it's not worth telling them,” you mutter. “Lots of Magical Girls have dead parents anyway, Liberty has a dead dad, Lightning's parents are... probably dead. It's how you Messengers operate, you take the girls who seem expendable, who can disappear easily, that way no one misses us if we die. That's how it works, right?” You fold your arms, glaring at him.

“I suppose,” he says. “I didn't recruit you specifically though just for that. And indeed, many Messengers have specific reasons for recruiting a Magical Girl, more than just to fight evil and monsters from the Immaterium.”

“Then why me?” you ask.

He tilts his head. “I felt pity for you. First time I ever saw you was you being beaten up by a group of girls outside the orphanage.” You remember that day. You cried so much that day, all those bruises and marks. “Bomber-”

“If this is another attempt to make us come together, Gatsby. Forget it. I've made my choice. I like where I am,” you explain. “Can't you accept that?”

“... I wish I didn't have to,” he says as he goes back to work. “Still, I wouldn't keep secrets, Bomber. They are your friends. They'll accept you for who you are regardless of your parentage or lack thereof. There is camaraderie to be found in strife.” You suppose that's what brought you close to Gatsby in the first place. All those days being beat up, bullied, crying alone in your room. Then suddenly he offers you this chance to be a Magical Girl? Take revenge on those who killed your parents? Wander the streets like a real adult? Who wouldn't?

You'd probably still do it if you had the chance to do it again.

You and Anneliese walk around the chainlink fence surrounding the warehouse. Your only real defense against the Witch Doctor if he ever comes around to try and finish the job. “So how is the device working?” she asks.

“It's almost done, Gatsby just needs to implement the final touches,” you say. “Other than that. We should be clear. He assures me it'll cure me.”

“What if it doesn't?”

“Then it's likely the burst of intense magic might kill me,” you say. She looks at you, horrified. “I'm joking, that's a joke. I honestly don't know.” Anneliese still looks a bit scared. Okay, maybe saying that last part wasn't so wise.

“I just hope it works,” she says. “I can't imagine you not being a Magical Girl, not working with us, just being a regular girl again.”

“I was never a regular girl to begin with,” you explain. “Growing up in an orphanage, having other kids beat you up? That doesn't breed normal girls.” She sighs, still a bit saddened. “I'm sorry, Anneliese. I guess I'm normally so excited and cheerful. I must be bringing you down something fierce.”

“It is okay,” she says. “It is interesting to see this side of you, Rana. You're far more mature than I thought.” Really? Well, you can't be as mature as Christine, she's always the one to take care of you all. “I bet even Christine would be impressed with how well you handle the situation.”

“I dunno.” You shrug at that.

“How did your parents die?” asks Anneliese. What? You look to her. “If-... that doesn't make you comfortable, I'm sorry. I'm curious as all, you never bring it up.”

“Well, they...” You look at her, and see a bit of a warm smile to her. She cares, she really does. Oh Anneliese.

It's part of why she became the Shadow and brought terror to the New York families: to make up for what they took from her.
>>
> “They were killed by the camorra.”

“They were killed by the camorra.” Anneliese stops in her tracks, looking at you with some hints of confusion, shock, and fear. “My father was a police officer, a very well-respected one in the neighborhood or so the nuns at the orphanage told me. But when the camorra moved into the neighborhood, extorting shops, lifting cars, running guns and booze, he was the only cop that wouldn't be moved by money or by intimidation. So... the camorra came to my house, they killed him and my mom. Ice picks. Very popular weapon in those days.”

“How did you survive?” she asks.

“I hid underneath my bed,” you say. “Until they left.” You won't even tell Anneliese what you saw and what you heard that day. Too many memories, too much emotion to it. It'd kill you just to even think about it. “So... yeah. That's why I became a Magical Girl. I wanted to intimidate those who intimidate others. I wanted to take what they took from me. Be the shadow that creeps in their rooms at night.”

Anneliese looks down for a second. “I'm so sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about-”

“No, I'm sorry,” she says. “For not asking sooner.” What? “My goodness, to think that you kept this secret for so long. I am sorry, you must have-”

“It's fine,” you say. “I'm past that now. I'm done with that life. I'm done scraping food out of the gutters, lifting cars from mobsters, doing nothing but talk guns with Gatsby under the stars. I got you and Christine and Sumire now.” You smile at her. “Anneliese, I-...” Wow, that felt good, saying all that. To think you kept this a secret for so long. “I don't know what I was thinking keeping this a secret from you and the others.”

“No, no, I understand. Maybe you were scared we wouldn't take it seriously or ostracize you,” she says. You shrug, maybe. “But there's nothing to be scared of. You did not cause their deaths. If anything, you embody your father's values, unshakable in the face of terror.”

Unshakable in the face of terror. Good ring to it.

Then she gently kisses you on the cheek. “I am glad to know you, Rana.” She hugs you tightly, sighing.

“Th-...” You sigh deeply. “Thank you, Annie.” You hug her back.

A chill runs down your spine. Something's wrong. “What is it?” She looks up, apparently also feeling it.

“Well. Well. Well.” You turn around. Coming down the alleyway towards the warehouse is the masked monstrosity himself. “I see you want a fair fight then, not bringing that Jewel of yours.” He quickly loads a fresh round of .357 magnum into his revolver, then whips the cylinder into place with a flick of his hand. “Time to die, Magical Girl.”

“Run!” You and Anneliese quickly bolt. Just in a time, a shot blows out the wall you were standing in front of. Man, that .357 is absolutely powerful! You need to get yourself one of those! The two of you hurry down the way. You look back to see him at the fence.

He simply phases right through, then starts relentlessly pursuing you. He fires another shot, this time grazing past your sleeve. “Ah!” You yelp, jumping up in surprise. Damn that was close!

You speed around the corner then hurry into the warehouse. You grab the top of the door then bring it down onto the floor shut and locked. “He's here!” you yell. Val pokes her head out of an office. “Gatsby, the device!”

“It's not ready yet!” he yells. “Buy me some time!” Agh, damn it!

He fires through the door, almost sniping you from behind! “Annie, get to an ambush position!” You hurry to the gunrack set along the wall. You managed to recover a neat amount of guns from the apartment and over your various activities from other unmentionable adventures. Gatsby had saved quite a few firearms just for you just in case of situations like this.

And oh boy, it was a tough decision to choose just one.

> Grab the biggest goddang thing on the wall.

You grab the huge anti-tank rifle sitting at the top of the wall, then load the detachable 7-round box magazine. This isn't your mom's T-Gewehr. It's heavier, it's meaner, it's bigger.

This is the weapon of a crazed, yellow, buck-toothed Jap.

> TYPE 97 AUTOMATIC ANTI-TANK RIFLE <
> Developed in 1937, this gigantic anti-tank rifle was developed with a semi-automatic function with a seven-round magazine. With a high rate of fire and firing 20mm shells, this is one of the biggest and baddest guns you can ever own. <

You brace your feet down and aim it at the door. The Witch Doctor fires again and again, then rips a hole in the wall. He pokes his head through, looking around, then sees you holding the AT Rifle down. “Dodge this!” you yell. Boom. The shot rips through his mask, exploding the fence, then the wall behind him. You fire again. The door behind gets shredded, splattering shrapnel against him. You fire once more. And again. And again. And again. And the last shot.

The door completely caves in on itself, collapsing on the Witch Doctor. You quickly rub your shoulder. Damn, that's some vicious recoil. Almost knocked your shoulder loose. You pull the magazine out and load in a new one.

He bursts out of the rubble. “Nice try,” he says. He tears off his mask. And when you see it, you really wish you hadn't. All you can really describe of it is the glowing eyes, and the incredibly harsh jaws which snap and gnash together. You step back, keeping the AT gun level. “That gun is far too big for you, young lady. I'm going to have to take it from you.” He starts to advance on you, a long tongue leaking out between his fangs. You fire again. The shot rips a hole through him, which immediately fades back into form. Another shot. Again, regenerates. Damn!

“Anneliese!” you yell. He turns around, and finds her hanging from the ceiling by chains.

“Surprise.”

> MECHA MAGICAL GIRL TIGER! <

She drops down, crushing him. He immediately leaks out from beneath her feet and fires a shot at her. The .357 plinks against her armor, and she immediately fires her machine guns and mini-88mm cannon at him. The two blast at each other.

Alright, alright, now to...

“Wait here, Anneliese! I'll go get Val!” She was staring at oyu just an hour ago! Where did she go!?

“Very well! I shall have this smog cloud to myself!” shouts Anneliese. She fires her 88mm again at him. He explodes into a huge dust cloud, then immediately reforms himself and tries shooting at Anneliese. Anneliese's thick armor and her own veteran experience will keep her alive against that horrific monster. You just have to worry about finding your ally!

“Gatsby!” You burst into his office, and find him putting the finishing touches on the bracer still. “Where's Val!?”

“I thought you knew,” he says.

DAMN IT.

You rush all over the warehouse offices, trying to seek her out, trying to locate any sign of her. And every minute you're delayed, is another minute shaved off of Anneliese's lifespan if you don't get back! Oh, where is she!? Where is she!? You hurry to poke your head out a window.

And there you see Val standing by the chain link fence, looking outside. “Val!” you scream. She looks up at you. “Val, we need your help!” She continues to stare up at you, blank faced. Damn it! You bust the window open, then place the AT rifle carefully on the windowsill. Very gently, you grab the brick and mortar, then climb down to her. You step onto the pavement and hurry over to her. “Val, come on, what's with-”

Coming out from around the corner is someone you never thought you'd see again. “Well, well, well.”

Knives.

She smirks, apparently none the worse for wear. “H-... how did you- but you're-”

“Dead?” she asks. “I'm much harder to kill than you realize. If I was as weak as Anneliese, I would've been killed years ago. No. I am not dead.”

“Anneliese is in the warehouse, fighting for her life!” you yell. “She needs our help!”

Knives leans against the chain-link fence, rubbing her fingers. “Oh? What's in it for me? You obviously do not have Liberty here so don't try to barter her body. Though...” She looks at you up and down, licking her lips. “Hm, hm, hm. So tempting. So devious.”

“Ah, forget you, Val! Come on!” You hurry to the warehouse, then stop. They're not following you. You turn around to see Val still standing there, dumbly. “Val, come on! Let's go!” She turns to Knives, then to you. “Val!” You hear a loud boom from inside the warehouse. “We don't have time for this, we need to go now!”

Knives grins, clutching the chain link fence. “It appears Val might be disagreeing with you.” What!? No- come on! “Come on, offer us something. Anything! Perhaps your sweet, sweet, delicious tits. Or your soft ass...” She blushes intensely. “Oh, what am I saying, what would Liberty think!? To have such forbidden thoughts...”

“What do I want?” She smirks, licking her lips again. “Oh, you are actually going to appease me, you temptress! What would Liberty think of-” You get in her face, surprising her for a second.

“I asked once, I won't ask again,” you say.

She snorts, leaning closer to you from across the fence. “Well, I suppose I should make this request worth it then, shouldn't I? I'll only get this once chance.” Val stares at the two of you. Knives says, “But then again, what would Liberty think if I were to cheat on her with such a... ravishing body like yours. Oh, the temptation.... and yet- oh....” She places her hands on her cheeks, sighing deeply. “I can't take it, I'm so sorry, Bomber.”

“Are you going to help me or not!?” you yell.

“I will.” She hops the fence then steps closer to you. “But turn around first.” Turn around? “Turn around. Go on!” You step around, blinking. Uh, what does this have to do with anything?

Then she slips her hands beneath your shirt and grabs your breasts. Okay, okay, that is a very bad thing! You shiver as she grabs your bare breasts, slipping her fingers beneath your bra. “Aaahhh... now this is what I wanted.” You try to pull away, but the death grip she has on you. She lowers one of her hands to your stomach, then pulls you tighter. “Mhmhmhm. Oh, Bomber. Bomber. Bomber.” Your face goes red. Please let go. For the love of God, please let go.

“A-... Annie,” you whimper.

“Hm?” She quirks her brow, then bites your ear. You squeak, shivering in her grasp. You can feel her tongue slobbering all over you. GAH! LET GO! “Hm, hm... oh, if only I had more time. But-” She slips her hands out, then lets you flop onto the pavement. “No, I have had my fun. Perhaps another time. Maybe even with Liberty.”

“I-... I thought you were going to kiss me or something,” you mutter.

“It doesn't count as cheating if I don't kiss you. Everything else is fair game,” she says. “Now lead us in.”

-

-

You hurry through the ruined entrance of the warehouse with Knives and Val in tow. “Anneliese, I-” You see her armor in shattered remnants all over the floor. Smoke rises from them, burnt to a crisp. No.

“Ah.” The Witch Doctor floats over a wounded but not defeated Anneliese. She keeps a Mauser C96 pistol trained on him even as she lies on her back, blood pooling out of her arm and from her mouth. “I was just about to kill your friend, but I suppose we can get the train moving with three of you.” He reloads his magnum revolver. He looks to Knives. “Interesting that you survived. I'll have to fix that myself then.”

“Hmph.” Knives snorts. “Still smug as ever.”

You take a deep breath. This is it.

“Bomber!” You look to see Gatsby pop out of the office and toss the bracer. “Catch!” You hold out your arm, and let it slip onto your infected arm.

The immediate burst of magic sends shockwaves through your body. You scream, writhing in agony and kneeling down to the ground as the anti-magic suddenly is purged from your body. It flies out of your hand into a black cloud, and is immediately disintegrated just like that. But God, the power! The power of it all! Jolts of lightning shoot from your finger tips, you can feel your skin harden yet flex, and your eyes burn.

You can't do this-

“RANA!” screams Anneliese.

You blink. Oh goodness.

You look to see everyone staring at you in shock. Even the Witch Doctor steps back in awe. What- what's happening? “It can't be,” says Gatsby.

You look down to see yourself wearing flowing black robes. Your hands are now covered in black gauntlets, with a dark ribbon tying off your waist. Your hair has grown much longer, and your hat is now replaced with a hood shading your eyes. You stand up, looking at the now hesitant Witch Doctor.

Let's play ball, bitch.

“How is this possible,” says the Witch Doctor. “I marked you. You should've lost your powers. How!?”

If you knew, you'd tell him. But right now, you're about to give a very angry anti-magical monster a rude awakening. You reach underneath your robes. Out come a pair of magical guns, sleek, elegant, but still feeling relatively powerful in your hands. They glow a very bright blue, the ends of the barrels going red hot as they prepare to fire.

> LONG ARMS OF THE LAW <
> FIGHT FOR JUSTICE <

You fire at him. The great blue beams smash him into the wall, splitting him in half. Woo, barely any recoil on these puppies either! Haha! Feel the power! He looks up, immediately regenerating himself. But you see a bright flash of fire on his arm. He's wounded. You fire again, and he dodges. The shots explode a hole in the wall.

“I don't understand why we're here,” says Knives.

“I concur,” says Val.

He leaps up, firing his revolver at you. The shot rips at your robe. And you yelp as the shot grazes your skin. And yet it didn't bleed! Ha! You fire again at him. Another miss. He's learning. He melts into the shadows, immediately retreating towards a pile of crates. Oh no you don't! You advance on him, firing again. The bright burst shatters his cover. You slowly walk up to it. Come on, you're not dead. Where are you...

He pops out, and immediately grabs your arms. You hear a sizzling noise as his hands squeeze your wrists. Suddenly, you feel the burning sensation! “AAAH!” you scream as you throw him around. You try to smash him into a wall, but he counters by melting again and pouncing on you like a bucket of water. He ends up solidly forming onto your back, grabbing at your face and your neck. He's going to choke you out! You fire your rifles again, wildly, trying to knock him off. Damn it, damn it, GET OFF!

“Val.” Knives points to you and him. “Help her.”

Val nods, immediately hopping into the scene. She tackles the Witch Doctor off of you. And he falls onto the floor with Val straddling on top of him. Before she can feed him punches, he melts again, then tackles Val like a great pile of goop. Val tries to wrestle him off while you recover. You look to your wrists.

And find his marks immediately dissipating. Haha! You grab your rifles again. Val is still trying to throw him off.

You're not going to risk it, you'll wait for a clear shot. You keep your rifles aimed steady. Val tries harder to force him off, flailing her arms and ripping at him to try and get at him. But it's to no avail. You just need one second and you'll get him.

Suddenly, he grabs Val's arm and tears it off. The blood and viscera you were expecting is replaced by some bright blue liquid, sparks, and transparent tubing. It still shocks you to the core when it happens. The arm falls off, twitching for a second before dying completely. He then grabs Val's head, and forces her down to the ground. He rises up for just a second.

There. You fire.

He goes flying right into a support column. Again, he's split up, but he quickly forms himself back together. However, he's now leaking in a way. His black anti-magical form appears to be dripping black drops of liquid, which smoke up as they hit the ground. “Gah! That's it! You-” You fire again. He flies back into the wall. “You-” You fire again. You separate his arm from his body. “Will you let me finish!”

“No,” you say.

Once more, you fire.

This time, you blow out his head. And this time, he's not having any of it. With a quick regeneration, he immediately pounces on you again. He grabs at your neck, squeezing it tight. You struggle just to breath, but you grab some kind of hold against him as his jaws snap at your face. “I have had it with you! You're not supposed to be powerful! You don't deserve this power at all! You're just magical scum!”

You charge, smashing him against a column. But he continues to hang on. You charge again, and he flinches in pain. But still, he holds on.

“You're a virus! You're not prepared for this kind of power you wield! You people need people like me to keep you in line!” Ah, shut up, shut up!

You throw him off, tearing away his other arm in the process. You fire at it with your rifle, immediately disintegrating it. He twitches, writhing, flailing as he attempts to regenerate himself on the floor. “You-” He looks at you, his glowing eyes, his snapping jaws. “You think this place makes you strong!? You think you're tough!? You can't do this to me!”

You blast him without another word. His form explodes into a huge cloud of black. You can see it trying to form again, but you quickly blast it again. Every time it tries to form again, you blast it and blast it until there's nothing but a crater in the ground where he used to be. Any black particles of his form quickly dissipate and disintegrate into the air, like ashes in the wind. You step closer to the crater, squinting.

He's dead.

And now just then, your rifles suddenly blink out of existence, and your robes and your brilliant hair give way to your regular magical girl appearance. You look at yourself, sighing deeply. The power's gone. But it's certainly not forgotten. The Jewel still sits in the bracer on your arm, no longer infected, now as pretty and pure as the rest of your skin.

You smile. Wait until you tell Christine about this! “Is he dead?” asks Gatsby as he climbs onto your shoulder.

“Yeah, he's dead,” you say. “Let's-” You hear a click of a revolver.

Oh God no.

You turn around and find Knives kneeling down next to a wounded Anneliese. Anneliese grits her teeth, glaring a hole right into Knives even as she lays bloodied and helpless. “Annie!” you cry. You step closer, but Knives quickly places the barrel against her head. “... Knives, please. We had-”

“A deal?” she says. “What, you expect me to actually honor those things?”

“I helped you, you helped me,” you say. “Just-... put the gun down.”

She looks at the revolver. “You know what? You're right. The gun isn't my speed.” She tosses it, then pulls a knife out of her sleeve and forces it into Annie's mouth. Annie squeaks, trying not to give ground to fear and intimidation. “You know, Annie never really smiled when she was with us. Maybe I can fix that.”

“You let her go, right now,” you growl. “Whatever you want, just-”

“The Jewel,” she says. “Give it to me.” She points to the bracer.

We cannot have Liberty come home to find us with a dead Annie and a Super Powered Nazi Stalker and her Super-Strong Fuckdoll balling around NY.

She'd tell us something like she's "Very disappointed in us" and even wag her finger! That would make us sad!

On the bright side, we did just take down THE anti-magical girl, a being so vile that Operator #5 didn't want to risk Liberty and told us to fix it with minimal support. Also, we gave the New York families another grievous blow for old time's sake.

“It's a shame you know. I thought this act of kindness would endear you to Liberty.” She tilts her head, quirking her brow. “But this? She'd never forgive you.” She squints at you. “I thought you wanted to win Liberty's heart. And the way things are with me, I guess you aren't interested in her after all.” You smirk at her.

She stands up, pulling the knife out of Annie's mouth, unharmed thankfully. She runs the flat of her blade against her fingernails, glaring at you. “What makes you think you understand my love for Liberty? My love is pure, she is the most beautiful girl on this planet, the one who can cause me so much harm and yet allow herself to be put in harms way. She is -mine-!” She huffs. “You really are a temptress, Bomber. They say the Devil would be attractive, I never thought I'd see it for myself.”

“Let Annie go,” you say.

Knives shrugs. “Fine. I'll let you go.” You nod, stepping towards Annie. Oh thank God. “But Val won't.” What.

You're immediately thrown against the wall. You cough, quickly catching your breath as you struggle to look up. Through the blur of your vision, you see Val looking down upon you. She holds her severed arm, still bleeding blue juices. Then she quickly sticks it back onto the stump and twists it on. Out of her back, a spread of four spindly arms come out, more mechanical and automatic in their appearance than her. Her eyes start glowing a bright blue as she pulls a rectangular device from her back as well. She slaps it over her eyes.

And it shines a bright blue, a single cyclopean eye looking down on you.

“V-... Val.” You pant. “You can't-”

“I am sorry, Bomber,” she says. “But the Major found me first. If circumstances were different, this would not be.”

Knives smirks. “Take the Jewel from her, Val. And leave her alive.”

Val's single eye zooms in on you, then she pulls a pair of M1911 Pistols from her back, with strange attachments to them projecting little beams of light at whatever they point at. And they now point at you.

> VAL <
> The Mechanical Girl <

You grit your teeth. “Bomber!” yells Gatsby. You and Val look to the side to see Gatsby immediately zap Val in the face. She flinches back, surprised. Just what you needed! You hurry away, grabbing the Witch Doctor's magnum revolver and quickly reloading it. “What's the plan!?”

>>

He would've turned any of the girls into a normie given the opportunity. That's why Bomber was left to deal with him by herself. The fact that she survived AND beat him (with the assist by Anneliese) speaks volumes about her.
>>
> Get Anneliese and get out of here!

You speed past Val, still stunned by Gatsby's sudden but weak attack. Knives draws a pair of knives to keep you from Anneliese. “Nope!” you yell. You fire a magnum shot right into her kneecap.

“AH!” She jumps up and falls onto her back, grabbing her leg. “Ah! Damn it! Aha!” As you grab Anneliese into a princess carry, you look back to see Knives starting to laugh as she writhes in pain. “Ahaha! I've never been kneecapped before, so that's what that feels like, ahaha! AHAHA!” She still groans in pain, holding her bleeding knee. “Val! Get her!”

You bust out of the door of the warehouse. “Hold on!” You let Anneliese straddle your back, then grab a drainage pipe leading up to one of the high buildings. You quickly climb up as fast as you can, with Gatsby and Anneliese riding back on you. The Jewel's safe, Anneliese's safe, thank goodness.

Then you see Val running after you. You're fine. You're already on the ceiling.

She crouches down, then jumps up after you, crushing the ground beneath her and leaping up into the air.

Oh.

You turn around and hurry yourself. You can feel those red dots paint themselves on you as she aims her dual 1911s at you. She fires at you. “Ah!” You yelp, yelling in pain. Something just bit you in the bum, ah, that's .45 ACP for you! Ah! That hurts! You keep on trucking.

“She's gaining!” says Anneliese. You manage the jump across the next building, but you don't stick the landing. You collapse, dropping Anneliese and Gatsby. Ah, your butt! You groan, then see Val jump across the gap and landing next to you. She points her 1911 right in your face, blinding you with her lightfinders.

“Hey!” Anneliese throws a brick at her, surprising her. “Leave her alone!” Val responds by pointing the guns at her.

OH NO YOU DON'T! You kick her legs out from under her. Her extra arms stop her from a complete fall and right her immediately while you get back up.

“Bomber!” Gatsby materializes a new weapon for you to use. You hold it your hands. Whoa this is heavy, very heavy! And yet...

> WINCHESTER M97 SHOTGUN “TRENCH GUN” <
> The Shotgun that almost got shotguns banned from use in warfare, the Winchester Model 1897 Shotgun is a pump action six-shell shotgun manufactured by the legendary Winchester Company. With a short barrel and a bayonet lug, this particular beast was designed for the trenches. And with its rapid fire capability (provided you keep pumping the action while squeezing the trigger), you can see why it's a war crime to use this thing. <
>>
>>812682
[2/2]

You squeeze the trigger as tight as you can. The first buckshot shell splashes against Val. You pump the shotgun as fast you can. Shell after shell gets blown and blasted into Val, revealing more of her internal mechanics, splashing blue blood against the floor of the roof, sending her knocked back almost against the ceiling wall. You charge, stabbing her with the bayonet.

No dice. She punches you, sending you across the rooftop. You see her pull the shotgun out of her belly, then snap it in half against her knee. Damn it, you liked that shotgun.

Gatsby quickly projects a new ball of magic, then throws it at you. You hold out your hand. If you thought that Trench Gun was heavy. Then by God, this thing almost broke your darn wrist.

> .577 NITRO EXPRESS DOUBLE BARRELED ELEPHANT GUN <
> This particular elephant gun is custom made to use one of the largest, if not the largest, elephant cartridge available. The .577 Nitro Express is filled to 750 grains giving it a velocity of over 2,000 feet per second. This cartridge can and will stop a charging elephant. The British Victorian explorers used rounds like these extensively to conquer the African jungles. <

You grab a pair of .577 Nitro Express rounds from beneath your skirt, then break open the action. Val twitches violently, the shotgun barrage apparently having done more damage than you thought. Still, you're not leaving anything to chance. You slip the cartridges in, then whip the barrel up and load it all up. You point the barrels dead at Val. She raises her pistols at you and fires one shot. One grazes your hip.

Damn, spaz fire! Your shot blows a hole in the low wall behind her. You're almost thrown backwards from the recoil. Damn it, you missed! She tries to fire another shot, but click go her pistols. Two smaller arms emerge from her back with new magazines. No, no. You're ending this! You squint, pointing it down range. Aim and squeeze, fire!

Again, you're thrown back. Initially you don't see the damage. You don't even know if you hit her.

But you look down. You hit her. The giant hole in her side and her missing arm should tell you that. She looks down in shock. Then looks up at you. She continues to advance. “Val! Stop!” She raises her good arm to point her remaining pistol at you. Damn it! You load in the new rounds. “Val, I said stop!” She fires, this shot grazes your cheek, splattering blood against the gravel beneath your feet. “Damn it!” You fire. This shot blows out her leg, forcing her onto her face. She continues to crawl towards you. “Val, it's over!”

“M-... must com- com- complete objective-” Her voice crackles from damage. You point your barrel at her. “M-... must com- c-c-” She can't even hold her pistol against you, instead ineffectually reaching out to grab you. Anneliese and Gatsby walk over.

“My God...” Anneliese looks sorry for Val. Even you do. Someone you trusted just a day or two ago. Reduced to this.

“M- m- m-” She can't form anymore coherent words. “Er--^#%”

“Can she be fixed?” you ask. “Can we take her with us?”

Anneliese blinks. “She just tried to kill us, Rana.” You look down at her as she pathetically slaps at your foot. “Look at her.”

“She deserves better than Knives.” You look at Gatsby. “Gatsby, can you do it?”

He looks at her. “Fixing is one thing. Her design is completely unknown even to me and my people. There is no specific guarantee that I can turn her to our cause either.” He hops up onto your shoulder. “Are you sure this is what you want?”

“No. But I don't feel that putting her out of misery is right, or just leaving her like this for Knives to come back and get her,” you say. “Even if she comes back to get me, we can deal with that when it comes. You saw how it happened.” Anneliese folds her arms, then nods slowly. She agrees. Gatsby? He tilts his head, then agrees as well with a nod. “Alright.” You grab Val's body, then lift it up in your arms. She tries to grab your neck, a loud mechanical screeching noise. “Val. We're going to fix you. Okay?”

She hesitates for a second, then tries again to snap at you with her hand. “Let's pick up what parts we can, guys.”

-

-

> OPERATOR #5 <

He stands shrouded in shadow next to the table where you have laid out Val and her damaged parts. Her body had to be restrained by leather straps as she still continued to try and grab and lash out at you with her hand and her teeth. Doctor Kalbfleischer and Gatsby stood by as well, examining every nook and cranny of Val. “Interesting work, Bomber,” he says simply. “And the Witch Doctor?”

“Dead, or at least no longer a threat,” you explain. You place his revolver down on the table next to him.

“I see. You have performed beyond expectations, Bomber,” he says. “That's not something I say lightly.”

“Can she be fixed?” you ask Doctor K.

“Biomechanics is not my strong vront,” he says. “But with your friend's help.” Operator #5 looks to Gatsby. “Maybe we can repair her. See vhat we can do. We cannot guarantee she vill not be hostile when fully fixed nor can we guarantee all our repairs will be helpful. This technology is out of our reach.”

Gatsby says, “We'll make it happen, somehow. Bomber.” You look to him. “I hope this is the beginning of uh... a new type of friendship between us. One not so involved with crime and mischief.”

You smile at him. “Maybe, Gatsby. I'll leave you guys to it.”

“I will debrief you later,” he says.

With that, you leave the operating room, and see Anneliese standing outside. Her wounds have been fixed up with bandages here, some bruise patches there. “Did you see what he looked like?”

“What?” you ask.

“Operator #5!” she says. “He almost never sees us in person! What does he look like!?”

“Uh. I didn't see,” you say.

She huffs. “Squandered chance.” You giggle a little. “What do you suppose we will do with Val once she is fixed? Can we even guarantee she can be trusted?”

“She can be. I hope.” You shrug. “Honestly, I'm just glad that's all over with.”

Anneliese purses her lips a bit. “You don't give yourself enough credit, Rana.” Huh? “You just eliminated an enemy that even Operator #5 did not want to risk sending Liberty against. And you held your own against Knives and that killer robot Val. And you dealt a serious blow to the mob in New York in the process. And you recovered the Jewel as well. You did all that yourself.”

“I had you too,” you say. “Don't sell yourself short now and tell me I'm not giving myself credit.” She rolls her eyes. The two of you start walking down the hall, smiling at each other. “Anneliese, I don't think I would've made it through any of this without you. Let's just be clear on that, okay?”

“Ja,” she says simply. “Still, I think Christine would be very proud.”

“Maybe she will.” You really hope she is once she finds out. Last you heard she was still in Europe settling some issues. “That was a tough week though. Almost dying, or almost having my powers stripped from me.”

“You did well even without your powers,” she says. “That is to be admired. A Magical Girl isn't just her powers. A Magical Girl has to have heart and courage as well.” You gently place your hand on your heart, smiling a little at Anneliese. “I guess I learned a bit of that.”

“Let me guess, from Liberty?” you ask.

“No.” She steps in front of you, then grins. “From you.”

“A little.” You smirk, a light blush on your face. “Come on, Anneliese. Let's not exaggerate or anything.”

“Nothing is being exaggerated. Everything you did, is all on you,” she says. “It'll be a story to tell Christine when she gets back.” The two of you keep walking down the hall, and you finally end up at the dorms. Now, it was time for sleep, real sleep. None of that one eye open stuff you had to do this whole week. Until a new house was settled down for you, you would be staying here in this little double room with two bunkbeds.

“Anneliese.” She looks back at you as she starts to change into her pajamas. “I've been thinking.” She tilts her head. “You know, you encourage me and the others so much. I can't help but feel that-”

“I encourage you because you did the same for me,” she says. “You helped me, gave me a chance. Most other people wouldn't.” You briefly flash back to that ball game, all those people throwing things at her just for being a German. “Rana, sometimes all people need is a friend. A friend can make all the difference in the world.”

“Yeah.” You nod. “But-”

“No buts.” She presses her finger against your lip, shushing you. Then gently, she kisses your cheek. “You should get some sleep. You must be terribly tired. We can cook breakfast together in the morning, okay?” Alright then. She takes your hand, then rests down in the bed. You lie down next to her and hit the lights. Immediately, she places her head on your chest, and is practically lights out from there.

You look up, staring at the grille holding her mattress up. Even despite your exhaustion from the past week, even after everything that you've done. It's not forcing you to go to sleep. No, your heart was still pounding. For a few short days, it was you against the entire world. An anti-magical monster, a robotic girl, the mafia and the camorra. You took them all on without your powers. It was just you, a couple of friends, and a whole lot of guns.

When you were young, you always dreamed of being a hero. The one that would stop crime, that would keep punks with guns and money from taking parents away from kids. You are one, to a certain extent. But back then with Gatsby it wasn't always so simple. It wasn't even always about justice. It was about survival. Now though, it was about justice. And that is more of a worthy cause than anything else.

You wrap your arm around Anneliese, grinning. Christine's never going to believe you did all this.

Forget what she thinks though. You know what you did.

Just wait until you tell her.
