Hello, I’m OzQM and this is Sanguine Quest.

In this quest you are Rektus, a vampire who wakes up after a millenium-long slumber during which the world has changed and everything you held dear has disappeared. Don’t dispair though, you now have the opportunity to explore a world free of contraints though you’ll have to be wary of dangers such as vampire hunters.

In the last thread you: escaped a team of mage, met some shopkeepers and a doctor, almost got killed by said doctor, were interrupted in a magic demonstration by a drunk, drunk who proved to be a master swordsman and bard, and finally discovered that the local divinity might not be alone before taking to avoid anathema.

In all fairness, even though he somewhat influenced you when that happened, you did have a good time when he was playing his mandolin in the forest. Doesn’t mean he gets away scot-free though, he’ll have to explain what this power of his does and how it works if he wants you to trust him. You don’t exactly feel comfortable sleeping near someone who can bend your will to its whim or use it for… worse things.
With all of that cleared up, you’ll need to find a carriage or something; it’s easier to move when you can sleep on the go while someone is driving plus it is more cozy than sleeping in the dirt and moss of barely dry safespots that may not be that safe. And if it’s not that comfortable, you can always throw your stuff in there for the horse or horses to pull.

Going to the local stable, you do cross an old and decrepit wagon. It’s been used for many years but these kind of carriage are built to take the abuse, at least according to Amakiir. He says that even if it looks worn it should hold up for a few month provided nobody does anything crazy with it. By the time it’s too damaged to move, you hope you’ll have enough money to get another one in better condition that should be useable for a long time.
Agna asks you to inspect it while she barters with the stable master who seems about as surprised as one can be, not a strange thing considering she was supposed to be mute just two days ago. Again, she looks like she is doing pretty well and when you come back to tell her that the wagon is fine you find the poor man sweating terribly.
He grumbles something about having to feed his family but still takes the small purse she hands him, in it a considerable sum but still a smaller one than you’d expect.
“Alright boys, I got us that wagon over here and a horse to pull it, so go pile your stuff in and get ready while I bring back Bess. It’s the horse in case you were wondering.”

Every time Agna speaks, you’re surprised at the amount of authority her voice carries; you thought that someone who didn’t speak once in their whole life would be more withdrawn when given the opportunity to talk but she doesn’t heed conventions, especially given how she clashed with her superiors… Amakiir on the other hand hasn’t been waiting for you and just carefully placed his instruments at the back.
Agna comes back with her hand on a stout mare who neighs audibly when it sees you. Animals are not your forte and being dead never made that better but you hope that Bess will get used to you. Once Agna is done attaching the horse to the carriage, there’s one choice remaining: who will drive it?
You don’t have any experience doing it unlike your companions but you think it might not be a bad idea to ride with the driver at the front, it will help fight off the probable boredom.

>Amakiir, you need to ask him a few questions and this might be a good opportunity.
>Agna, her input on the last events might be crucial. Plus Amakiir will have his hands free to play.

Agna must have been shaken by the revelations back at the forcefield, it might be a good idea to see how she’s doing; the driving and Amakiir playing should be enough to distract her from what happened.
She settles in the driving seat and helps you climb up on the neighbouring one.
“There you go… Feeling snug in here? I hope you are because we don’t have cushions yet and the road is pretty rough...”she asserts, pointing at the almost-muddy ground from which a few rocks protrude. “Alright then let’s go!”

With that she bides Bess forward, at first slowly because of the mud then the wagon speeds up as the mare picks up speed and start pulling harder. You almost fall off at the first tremor but luckily grab the railing early enough to prevent a no-doubt dirtying fall. Agna pretends she hasn’t seen that but you can see the small smirk betraying her acknowledgement; you thus make a note to yourself to be more careful around her.
As more solid ground comes up, Amakiir takes out his mandolin and starts playing a slow ballad to put all of you into a travel-proof mood. It’s a soothing song, one that talks of maids and princesses, a bit of forbidden love and mostly of tragic misunderstandings but you don’t really pay attention to the lyrics as you shift it to Agna.
She looks concentrated and only notices you when you wave to her side.
“Hey Rektus, what do you want?”
“I don’t know exactly, it’ll depend on you. How have you been feeling since the… incident back there?”

She ponders your question for a bit then turns towards you.
“I don’t know either. While I’ve never been that much into religion, Vedran has always been a big part of my life… I mean, our language and country is named after him! But honestly I’m more excited than anything; because it means almost everything I know can be challenged and that’s gonna be interesting to discover for sure.” she answers in a surprisingly relaxed manner.
“You know, I’d expected you to be a bit more… unhinged I guess by all of this. I mean, you didn’t even know me two days ago and Vedran was still “your” god.” you respond. “I mean, you were mute then!”
“True but I haven’t been given a reason to regret not being mute so far. ” She laughs and then lightly strokes her throat, the scar shouldn’t be there anymore but you don’t doubt she’s unused to talking. Even now, her voice sounds kind of rough like she smoked a pipe just earlier but it’s not entirely too bad. A small silence settles in but it’s not an uncomfortable one.

“That said, there’s still one question I’ve been asking myself… Why in the world did you come out of the cabin when I made some noise? I mean, you’re a mage and all but just storming outside at sunset with just a hatchet isn’t uh...“ you struggle to find word that could describe the situation while staying polite but she just laughs instead.
“I get what you mean… Truth is, I wasn’t exactly in the best of moods when you came and I suppose it just made me go over the edge. At this point I just wanted to go punt some stuff, though I didn’t expect a vampire to come at me. I guess you must have found that weird, right?” She nods, as if replaying the scene to herself. “Actually, what did you think when you first saw me?”

“Weeeeell…” you trail off.
“What, say what you have to say!” She’s looking flustered so you’ll want to be careful about what you say if you don’t want to be flung off into the wild by yourself. “I won’t bite, I swear; at least if you tell me right now that is.” She’s even wilder than you expected, even with all the “charging at an unknown threat with just a hatchet” business she did at some point.
“What I mean is that I didn’t really pay attention on the moment. I was mostly trying to survive and you… were there I guess?”

Her expression doesn’t settle on one particular feeling but this might have been not your worst answer, at least considering your previous track of offending the wrong people at the wrong time - including yourself.
Anyway, you haven’t been kicked off your ride so small mercies are a thing now but maybe you should do something else to pass time, it would be stupid to waste it uselessly and you’ve been meaning to learn how to talk the common language for a while.

“So remember this, okay? I know you’re a scholar but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to study further if you want to be better at it. Once you have a hang of our language, we’ll go on to writing and reading.” She leans back into her seat, it is getting pretty uncomfortable and it’s only thanks to your vampiric constitution that you don’t really feel it. You suggest she switches with Amakiir, who so far has only been playing and hasn’t done much to contribute, and she nods.
“It’s a really good thing that you have your telepathy, you would have done terribly… well, even worse without it.” she hasards forward, not waiting for your answer to hop down and give the reigns to Amakiir.
At least, that’s what’s supposed to happen until a bolt comes flying out of “nowhere” to embed itself into the wood of the wagon. Bandits surely but at least now you’re not alone to deal with them; now might be a good time to stretch out your limbs and magic. The only problem is that you’ll need to find them but you have a plan…

You send a quick mental note to your companions to prepare their mind and follow-up with a mental screech; no doubt unnerving them a bit even through their concentration and preparedness. To your left you hear grunts of pain and distress, the bandits obviously didn’t expect someone with your abilities and they won’t live to learn from their mistakes if you have any choice.
You point out to their direction and Amakiir sprints towards them, at a brisk pace that belies the treacherous nature of the woods. Agna on the other gets to cover behind the wagon and starts to incantate, you don’t know her magic but there’s no doubt it must be something helpful.

Confrontation has never been your strong point and besides it looks like Amakiir should be able to handle himself given how he uses his “needle”. Now that you think about it, you haven’t even asked him what that sword of his is supposed to be called.
But enough daydreaming, this is a battle and the bandits aren’t going to wait for you.
Calling upon your powers you jump down on to the ground and feel the currents of mana swirling around you before you suddenly blast a ray of searing fire in the direction of one of the voice you have been listening to. Soon enough you hear a strangled cry as your victim’s throat starts to combust under the assault of your Undying Flame but you don’t weather your assault and double down on the bandit until his corpses catches fire.
The bandits that Amakiir hasn’t killed yet must be horrified by what just happened and this is exactly what you’re counting upon; morale is a component most people underestimate unjustly.

Turning your attention to your companion you find him dancing while his lips move almost insanely, he must be chanting something. That doesn’t prevent him from toying with his adversary and in the blink of an eye a bandit fall to the ground with his throat pierced while another approaches Amakiir from behind, trying to stab him discreetly in the heat of battle. Almost offhandedly you make a spirit grip his wrist at the last moment before crouching near the corpse you just killed.
You miss Amakiir’s retalation since you’re raising the corpse before you but you don’t doubt his revenge is swift. The skeleton rises, flesh sloughing off of it and it lunges towards the three last bandit still standing with an unadulterated bloodlust that not even death faded away.

One of them just takes off but is suddenly crashed by a falling tree, something that catches even you off guard. You weren’t aware of any invisible lumberjacks around but if they’re gonna be helping you sure won’t mind. The two remaining baddies are still lifting their weapon but they find it hard to do once the spirit you invoked freezes and shatters their hands before disappearing. For a while they just stare at the remains of their frozen limbs before dropping to the ground unconscious.
The frozen ends of their… hands makes it impossible for blood to spill but they’re gonna die anyway so you turn your attention towards Amakiir who just does a thumbs-up.

“Hey, is it over yet?” shouts Agna from beyond the cover. “I hope the tree didn’t startle you too much!”
So the tree was her doing, you’ll have to ask how she did it.

There are two ways to have a permanent "servitor": brute force it with magic (which requires a fuckton of magic since you're effectively paying the upkeep price all the time) or doing a more elaborate ritual to reduce the cost or shift it to an external magic supply.
So unless you stop to make your new servant new rituals, it's not really gonna be sustainable.

Rodnag’s Quest
“Kid, let me tell you one thing… That vampire of yours hasn’t done me anything so it’s your damn job to take care of it, ‘kay?” you grumble before going back to polishing your maces.

He tries protesting but you shush him and point towards the door. As he nears the doorway you loudly cough, catching his attention and he turns back to see if you have anything left to say.
“Now, I did say you would have to do it by yourself… but that ain’t meaning I can’t give you a nudge on the way. Pack your stuff, I still have some things to teach you yet.” His face is illuminated by a bright smile very unlike his previous mood and for a moment you remember the small kid that you had chosen during the ceremony of the Order of Theodoros.
You did leave them after a while but you had taken your apprentice with you, both as a final screw you and because the damn brat had grown on you.

Hoisting your maces in front of you, you examine their shine and polish and turn on the magic field surrounding the spiked heads to make sure the current is still going through. An arc of lightning jumps from one mace to the other, grim reminder of the fate of your preys.
Maybe the kid wasn’t the only thing you had taken from the Order...

The wyvern nearly takes your head off with its claws but you duck, soon enough that you can prepare your hit but not early enough that it has time to react. One crushing blow to the stomach and the beast is writhing to the ground as the electricity makes it convulse; an opportunity that Hedoran takes by piercing the monster’s head with his crossbow.
He’s been adjusting well to the damn thing and while it still makes you shiver to see it, you’ve grown accustomed to its presence. Making the bolt appear in his hand and putting it on it’s crossbow, Hedoran looks up to see if any of the pests remain before putting it back on his shoulder; a gesture you would normally call reckless but you trust his judgement.
“Good, those damn varmints are dead so the village should be safe now. This isn’t why we wasted so much time climbing this damn mountain though; lesser hunters could have done that.” you state flatly.

Subtlety has never been your strong point, things are better told as-is and you shouldn’t waste time when you could be doing more important stuff.
“Over there I saw a nest. It should be full of wyvernlings and eggs. Take one egg and slaughter the rest; what you do with it later isn’t really my concern.

> Taming wyvernlings is very hard to do but they make excellent pets when young and even better predators when adult.

Silence falls back in the clearing and now it’s just your group and a bunch of corpses.
This… isn’t how you had envisioned your journey would go but hey, everyone must begin somewhere, right? Speaking of making ends meet it might be a good idea to loot the corpses, you know from experience that whatever the dead had with them doesn’t carry over into the Desolation Beyond.
That said, you definitely aren’t sure your companions share the same feeling so you resolve to ask them first as a question of principle; you wouldn’t want them to think you a graverobber - though the irony wouldn’t be lost on you.
“All right guys we have a choice to make now. Does any of you mind if we loot the corpses?”

Almost simultaneously their faces contort though Amakiir’s frown is more restrained than Agna, he must have already heard about that kind of things during his travels… if he has been telling the truth so far.
“I’d rather not, thank you very much.” he responds as he gestures over the dead laying around. “The bards of yonder saw fit to omit the results of the legendary battles for dignity’s sake… and I believe I’ll do the same. The most I’ll do is take their purses, that’s it.”

What about Agna then?
“Nope, nope nope nope. Don’t count on me to touch corpses, that’s unsanitary! No offense, Rektus but they don’t look as well preserved as you.” she frantically answers, making it very clear she’d rather be doing anything than this.

Oh well, looks like you’ll be doing this yourself then; only the purses though. You wouldn’t want to anger Amakiir this early in your journey and they both need to know you’re not a complete monster. Scouring the battlefield for what little you can find, you still manage to get a few purses who in total amount to a sizeable pile of coins of various metals.
You don’t really know how the economy works in these parts - yet another thing you’ll have to learn apparently - but you can wager that this should be worth something; those bandits must have had no shortage of work.
Going back to the wagon, you find that Amakiir and Agna have switched and you decide to accompany the elf at the front.

Settling to his side and watching as the road unfolds in front of you, you figure that now might be a good idea to ask him about what happened back when he… mesmerised you.
“Now, since I told you you’d have to explain yourself if you came along, why don’t you go ahead and tell me what all of that was about?”
He winces as he just touched a sore spot, whether he has to explain himself often or the topic just bothers him is unknown, but so far he hasn’t really given you a reason to care about it.
He is apparently thinking deep about it and turns towards you:
«All right, what do you want to ask?»
> «What happened when you were playing?»
> «You have rich clothes and know how to use a sword and mandolin, yet live in a backwater village… How come?»

« Before we ask anything else, I feel you need to explain something to me… How did you know Agna and I were about to go away?» you ask while recalling how the whole thing happened. «It’s not like we told anyone else beyond her team and even then they hadn’t time to go to the village since we were on the path the whole time and it only took us so much time to buy supplies before you caught up to us.»

An obvious expression of guilt crosses his face and you can see him consider all sorts of tall-tales and lies to tell you before he settles on telling the truth; it does help that you’re able to somewhat perceive his surface thoughts.
“I… Okay, this might come across as weird – it wouldn’t be the weirdest thing I’ve done though – but I kinda followed you?” he answers while gesturing wildly before you can even so much as place a word.

He’ll have to be pretty convincing if he wants you to believe him, so far he hasn’t given you much to work with and what few things he has done were either wonderful or terrible.
“After I stopped playing I realized you were probably going to be rightfully pissed at what I did. So I decided to catch up to you and try to apologize but you were already with Agna when that happened and what you were doing looked pretty important so I just waited for an opportunity.
When you stormed off and started preparing for your trip I realized I wouldn’t have any opportunities to apologize… so I just tried one last time. Plus, the both of you looked like you were preparing for an adventure and I like those!”

For all the weird stuff he did he does look pretty earnest. He’ll have to tone down his antics if he wants Agna and you to stay with him but aside from that he should prove to be a valuable ally; if you get to understand his powers. Speaking of which, now might be a good time for him to explain what those are, that music stuff definitely did have some magic in it.
“Alright, I get you. While it wasn’t the best way to go about it, you did have good intentions so I forgive you. Now why don’t you explain what’s the deal with your music so we can avoid further drama when you decide to play again?” you pointedly ask, decided to get the truth.
He definitely isn’t sidestepping this one.

“Alright, this might sound a bit crazy to you but that’s because of a Fae.” At the mention of the word, your eyebrows raises; you have met elves but their nobler – and crueler – cousins are so rare and elusive that they are more legends than people to this point.
Sighing at your reaction, he takes of his jacket to reveal his shoulder on which a notable crescent mark is present. Even on his pale skin, it seems almost silvery and definitely looks unnatural, as if someone had branded him with a curse.

“Oh don’t worry it doesn’t do anything bad, far from it. One of my far ancestor made a deal with a noble of the Fair-Folk, one that seemed too good to be true and proved to be just that. The deal was that each and every one of my ancestor’s descendent – as far as it may be while still retaining the family blood – would be destined to greatness; the catch being that one kid of each generation would have his soul collected by the Fae upon death to do… things, both as a fuel for the spell and as payment for the deal.” he grimly explains, the matter becoming painfully obvious to you.

Void magic might be able to do something akin to this but it would require an extreme amount power to pull it off; on the other hand you have no idea how Fae magic works so it might not be as difficult for them to do it. Nevertheless it would explain how Amakiir came to become such a good swordsman and musician even with his longer lifespan.
“I’m sure you must have understood by now that the… pact, or whatever you want to call it - affects me too, even though I wish it didn’t. As for how and why I ended up in the village… maybe later. I honestly don’t feel like talking about it for now.” he continues, his mood now darkened by the conversation.

Well this got depressing fast. Nevertheless you learned a lot about him and cleared some mysteries surrounding this peculiar elf. And now that you think about it, you may be able to “salvage” his relative’s soul through void magic if he truly cares that much about them; the only problem being that you don’t see any way to do that without him knowing about you being a vampire.

> Tell him you may save the chosen one’s soul using void magic, he’ll know at some point that you’re a vampire anyway… if he doesn’t already.
> Best wait until you’re sure you can do something about the situation before giving him false hopes; you don’t want to pull out at the last moment on something so important.

Funnily enough, no one besides Helzer even really noticed you since you didn't really talk to anybody; it was Agna who was in charge of buying the stuff and the room... in which you finally didn't reside.
>>

Hmm, this is an… interesting situation to say the least. Judging by Amakiir’s portrayal of the whole thing he feels kinda bad about all that soul stuff and you can’t exactly fault him for that, most Fae are notoriously secretive and normally shy away from mortals – they might not have eternal life but they age so slowly it’s pretty much the same – so just the fact that his ancestor met one is testament to the “luck” he has been given, making it all the more ironic considering the descendents themselves aren’t really okay with the pact to say the least.
“I understand your plight but isn’t there any rules you can use to break the pact such as taking of the brand or something?” you ask.
“Some of my parents already tried… But even if all of my ancestor’s relatives burnt off their brand, it always appears somewhere or over the burn mark so it’s useless. And since I have no idea who this Fae is or where they live, you can understand that it might be a “bit” difficult to find it. Truly, mine is an impossible task.” he adds, sighing in a VERY depressed manner.

Before you can even feel sorry, the man takes of a bottle of booze from who-knows-where and starts drinking from it. Is there any time where he doesn’t drink, beside fighting and playing his mandolin, that is? Given the problems he has, you aren’t that surprised to see him do that; though you can’t help but wonder if the fate the chosen are subjected to is truly worse than death itself… Better not to ask him, the subject must already be sore enough as-is.
But enough moping around, you might be able to save him… or whoever is affected by that pact of his if you play your cards well. Now, there isn’t guarantee you could actually do it within an acceptable time frame or at all but he will feel more inclined to help you if you give him a reason to, right?
“Amakiir, I am a vampire and I may be able to help you.” you claim assuredly. Behind, you feel Agna turn slowly towards you.

Okay, you could have worded that better but- okay he’s spitting his drink, did you really mess up that bad? Aww, now he’s wiping his face with his expensive clothes, it’s gonna be so hard to wash out and- okay now you’re getting sidetracked AND off topic. You need to regain control of the conversation before you find another occasion to fail at words and stuff. What to say? Ah, yes.
“I think I may be able to use forbidden magic to rip the soul of the person you’ve been talking about and stuff it into a jar, for all of eternity.”
>>
>>820069

Okay, this isn’t working and given that he’s actively considering jumping off the carriage now, you suspect you’re gonna have a hard time convincing not to do so. Then again, you might not have expressed yourself in the most eloquent of ways considering the process really isn’t that forbidden, even the actual soul-ripping part, it’s just horribly dangerous. Man, it’s a good thing you didn’t mention that or he might have tried stabbing you or something...
“WAIT! What I meant is that I should be able to save the soul by taking it from the Fae and giving it back to it’s owner.” you hurriedly mention, desperate to salvage the situation.

You of course don’t mention that this would also turn him into a lich, partly because that’s just semantics and partly because you don’t want to get shivved. He calms down and takes a few deep breath before concentrating back on the road of which you’d been veering off quite dramatically - he was the one driving after all – before gritting his teeth.
“Okay, considering you’re actually a vampire and you don’t want to kill me – which so far you haven’t really convinced me off – explain why I should trust you and not just leap off the wagon here and now. I may want adventures but I’d rather prefer it didn’t end – or start for that matter - with my death.”

He’s got a point here, you’ll need to be convincing.

> “Well, I’m too incompetent to kill you.”
> “I simply desire to learn more about the world at large, something that I’m sure you can understand.”
> “Because if you do, you’ll be back to that sad hole back at Joel’s Cliff. And I’m sure you don’t want that.”

Rodnag's Quest

“Well, hauling that damn egg was pretty hard… T‘s a good thing you carried it by yourself, am I right?” you quip to your panting apprentice who shoots you a death-glare.
Even without you teasing him along the way, it’s true that the hike back to the refuge you had prepared before the slaughter wasn’t easy; yet another reason you’d have preferred lesser hunters to do it for you.

Your bones are now creaking and you can feel the shivers coming back now that the rush from the battle has passed, the hike obviously didn’t help and you can feel the age catching up to you even if you’d like to pretend otherwise, even for Hedoran’s sake. The little kid already has a lot to worry about without you croaking by his side when he needs you the most, so the least you can do is keep on living.

Plus you do have things you need to do by yourself; there are talks of the Order going on yet another self-righteous rampage among the neighboring village and you need to stop them before they show up to your house and start bothering you.
At least that’s what you keep telling yourself, they are going too damn far this time and you won’t… no can’t let your former comrades disgrace the name of Theodoros further by sacking homes and killing innocent peoples. Just because the Emperor – or Imperator as he likes to be called nowadays – has given them permission to do whatever they want doesn’t mean they should take advantage of it, no matter how much that moronic ass is asking for it.
But this time, you won’t let them get away with this… you went away once but now you’re back.

Hedoran lays the egg on the table and now that you’re back home you can fully admire it’s shimmering beauty. The colors would be dizzying to any creature but the wyvern’s subpar seeing doesn’t allow them to appreciate the beauty of the fat shell; instead they use a sonar coupled with two beady colorless eyes to pinpoint the location of their prey before swooping in to kill their prey.
Luckily it isn’t hatching anytime soon so the kid should have time to prepare and…

Oh yes, you almost forgot. One of the thing that makes wyverns so damn hard to eliminate is the fact that they evolve at a fast pace to be able to handle their environment. In fact, they do it when they’re still in their eggs, so as to gain traits from the area they have been exposed to; this also means that the damn thing are able to propagate in almost every places. But a wild “uncolored” wyvern can be just as threatening as an fire-wyvern. So now remains the choice, to what environment will the wyvern be exposed?

“Well, simply put, I think you’re not ready to go back to Joel’s Cliff and mope your days there especially if you have this curse on your mind. Now that you know that there might be a solution I can guarantee you won’t rest until you’re sure about it. And frankly you really don’t look like you want to just gather dust in such an uninteresting place… now that I think about it I have no idea why you even stayed there at all.” you expose, calling his bluff.

Meanwhile Agna has stood still behind the both of you but you feel her get ready in case anything goes down; though you can’t tell whether she’s just going to bolt away or bonk Amakiir on the head, not that you’d really prefer either options.
On the other hand he looks deep in thought but you’re pretty sure you haven’t swayed him entirely; if only because all of this came out quite dramatically and he hasn’t had time to think about all of this.
“All of what you just said is quite true but I’m not yet ready to die so you’ll forgive me if I’m a little dubious of your claims. Agna hasn’t spoken so far but I don’t believe she only has nice things to say to you, right?” he retorts before shooting a glance at Agna who just pretends not to be there.“”

This is complicated but you should be able to salvage this if you play your cards well; it’s a bad thing you don’t actually have anything to put forward, right? Well, it is in those moments that it’s the best to just lay your cards down and go all-in; at least that’s what you seemed to understand from the one game you played with Agna yesterday evening. She might have been stomping on you when it came to actually give out results but you don’t really have any better options now do you?
“Listen Amakiir… While the situation of how I came to be here is quite complicated and convoluted in some forms, the only thing I desire is to gain knowledge about the world at large. I want to know how I ended up here and to discover why but even if you take out what I’ve already done, and trust me there’s a lot to say, I believe this may be the occasion to make a great adventure.”

He bring the carriage to a stop as he ponders you words, what they mean and the fact that you could be lying; all of it swirling deliriously into his drunken mind. The few areas you can gaze in his mind from a cursory glance only reveal cracks in his fragile mind, proof that he must have had tough times previously. But you can guess that he must be close to yielding since a few nervous twitches betray his indecision and now that you think about it, there’s one last ace you could use…
“If you don’t trust me, it’s alright. But just know that if you join me and Agna, I’ll tell you what we were talking about yesterday when you followed us; it ought to be good enough for you to write a saga about it at the least...”

His head jolts up and you know that you have won, the appeal of your secret plus the call of adventure winning over his previous stubbornness.
“Okay, you got me. I still don’t trust you for now but at least I’m pretty sure you won’t try to kill me, at least not without me taking you with me.”

From the previously unseen steely look in his eyes you don’t doubt he’s serious when he says that, you’ll have to win his trust on the long run. Now, you’ll have to tell him what Agna and you talked about but before this you need to choose a destination to go; you’re not gonna live in the woods your whole life.

> Agna mentioned a city called Landegrim in which you could hide and maybe get a hideout on which to base your operations.
> She also told you about a village up in the mountain from which the villagers trade with dwarves; the place isn’t too far but it’ll be hard to reach, it’s called Hilkarn.
> Near the coast is another city called Milzer in which most of the scum of the country comes to take refuge, the perfect place to lay low but you may get in over your head there...

The castle could be refitted to hold you and your companions, that’s a given but it might need a lot of money to do so. It’s a shame Agna won’t be able to use her research funds by then because those would have helped but it’s no use getting a hideout if you can be traced there.
From what Amakiir mentioned though, the place would be terribly easy to guard against any potential invader thanks to it’s location, you’ll see for yourself once you get there.
“So this castle you mentioned, any thing else we should know about it?” asks Agna who clearly has been waiting for a chance to say something.

After the conversation you shared with Amakiir, you had to explain to her that everything was fine, at least somewhat, and that you just needed to clarify a few things. A few tense minutes later everyone had calmed down and you had all agreed to choose a place to go to, as long as it spared you the awkwardness of the standoff.
“Well, beyond the usual legends shared by storytellers and bards, everyone agrees that the place has been empty for at least a century or so; it used to belong to an ancient order of knights, called the Order of Theodoros but they left it for some reason.
Some say that creatures roam the place but you can guess this is just hearsay and rumors; thought I wouldn’t be too quick to discard those.”

It’s true, most legends usually have a bit of truth in them but you’ll find out there; now you need to travel.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

While most epics and legends are quick to portray the grand deeds done by heroes and the like, they suspiciously forget to mention how dreadfully boring most trip can get when you don’t end up fighting bandits or wolves.
Sure there’s Amakiir with his mandolin but he sometimes need to take over Agna and then the dreadful silence settles in; at least it gives you time to learn the Alvedran language with her.
You are not going to write poetry with your current skills – if only because you don’t know how to write – but at least now you should more or less get the gist of what people are telling you when used in conjunction with your “mind-reading”. If multiple people end up talking at the same time, you’ll still be as confused as before but you should be able to catch a few words here and there.

Now at the end of an unremarkable trip, you wonder how it feels so short now when it felt like an eternity back then. You had to stop at a few inns in order to restock your food and Agna threw all of her research-bonds away, it would be too easy to track you with these.
Of course that now means you’ll need to earn your own money in whatever way you can; Amakiir is already doing his part by playing in each place you stop to but Agna and you don’t really have much to bring for now.
It’s a good thing she took her own money in addition to the bonds as you would be hard pressed to find shelter otherwise even with Amakiir’s contribution.

You can actually see the castle from the village at the base of the mountain; it’s more of a fortress really and you can guess so even from so far away. Makes it all the stranger that an entire order of knights collectively decided to leave it to the crows and never return to it.
The village itself sits at the bottom of a ravine, deep within a crevasse that protects it from the elements and makes it actually quite cozy to live in; despite it’s other average qualities.
When questioned, the villagers say that they have stopped minded about the castle though they confess they still use its name to scare misbehaving children; the Nail of Theodoros nowadays called the Rusted Nail.
Not one of them has even tried getting near because of old superstitions and the place may as well be invisible for all they care but they might help you if promise them gold.

It’s been about two hours since you’ve arrived to the village and in the meantime you’ve managed to find enough gear that you should be able to go there and back without too much problem but you won’t be able to bring the wagon with you, the incline is too steep and it would take too much time to reach the place.
If you want to reach the Nail you’ll have to go alone and with no spare equipment; after all this is only a scouting mission and you just need to see if the place is inhabited.

Asking the shopkeeper who sold you the equipment, you find out that there’s a trail that can be used to go up but that it hasn’t been maintained since the inhabitants of the Nail left so it might be hard to follow, especially if you don’t know the surroundings.
The woman doesn’t offer any kind of help, she hasn’t any intention of going with you and knows for a fact that none of her fellow villagers would be ever be interested in it either unless they’re sure the place is safe and not haunted.
“So you’re sure no one can lead us there? I mean, your village might stand to gain if we managed to clear the place, right?” barters Agna who’s trying desperately to convince anyone to accompany all of you but hasn’t succeeded yet.

“I’m sorry Ma’am” answers the girl who hasn’t left her seat the whole time “but I have a family and I don’t intend on losing them if this goes badly. The most I can do is point you towards the trail and even that would be a favor, your friend over here looks pretty shifty and suspicious.” she retorts while pointing in your direction.

She does have a point here, you don’t like the trustiest fella around if only because you are trying to go to a supposedly haunted place. Nevertheless, you bide the small red-head farewell and are joined by your companions at the doorway.
Looking around, you do see the trail she has been talking but seeing is different than hearing about it; it really is steep and you can almost hear the mental groan Agna makes at the sight of it. You don’t necessarily care about it since you don’t really have lungs to empty or muscles to tire but it’s true that a fall in a place like this could easily prove fatal, especially with all the gear you’re carrying.
“Alright, everybody… I hope you’re ready to go ‘cause this one might prove to be a tough nut to crack to say the least.” announces Amakiir in the jolliest tone he can muster while still looking vaguely frightened at the incline.

Without even waiting for any kind of response, he sets off probably before he gets too scared to do it and promptly faceplants, the treacherous gravel giving way under his very feet. A though nut indeed…

You knew that this would probably be pretty hard when you began but you had no idea how much it would prove to be. Between the slippery surfaces from the recent rains, the uneven terrain and the almost concealed trail you almost didn’t reach the summit.
By the time you actually do reach the sun has started setting down and it proves to make for a grim sight when you look at the Nail under a blood-red sun. It certainly earned it’s unnoficial title of Rusted Nail and you can only imagine what the place looked like before it started rusting like that; but you know for a fact that constructing a fortress entirely out of metal is a preposterous achievement and one that still stands to this day.
From where you are, you can’t quite see whether it’s metal or simple red rock but judging by the sharp angles you’d wager that it’s made of metal. Now why anyone would construct a building that could rust is up to guess but it must have been planned by the creators, that or they somehow kept the place perfect using a huge workforce or magic.

Now the issue is that since the sun is setting, you’re gonna have to camp. This wouldn’t be so problematic if the place was safe but you can’t be sure that it is; so you’ll have to make a choice, somehow.

It seems going inside is the better option; you’re going there anyway so might as well head there now. Now you’ll need to be careful if there are indeed monsters or bandits in there but as long as the three of you stick together and stay alert there ought to be no adversary you can’t overcome.
“Alright, making a camp outside is just begging to get attacked. We need to head in and barricade ourselves in a room until the sun rises up so that we don’t fight in the dark.” you explain to your companions.

You take the lead and move up to the fortress’s portcullis which has either been forced open or just left there after a siege because you can see some deep dents peppering its surface.
Luckily, you don’t have to push the bars aside as there is enough room to squeeze in – a particularly brutal blow seems to have bent the metal frame out of shape – there is no doubt that doing otherwise would have made a lot of unwanted noise. There’s a slight moment of tension when Agna lightly brushes against the bony carcass of a monster and almost jumps but she manages to compose herself.

Glancing around your surroundings you almost see shadows shifting but quickly determine that to be effects of your weary mind; the shapes of the decaying abominations on the floor are already frightening enough without you creating some of your own, that’s for sure.
That said, a certain sentiment of unease has permeated your group and you quickly surmise the grim surroundings must have a part in this. It’s a strange scene, with bones almost stuck mid-breath and the thick carpet of dust on the ground confirms that nothing has been going your way in a while… but it isn’t enough to calm all of you down.
You can’t manage to place the feeling that is affecting you but it is apparently bypassing all rational thought, even for a vampire like you; it makes you wonder what in the Desolation the previous owners of the place have been doing here to have such despair permeating the walls.

After a bit of wandering around the main courtyard and when you’re done making sure that you’ve successfully dodged all the skeletons to avoid disturbing the place, you finally reach the door to the castle itself, many times more massive than the ruined portcullis and in a solid bloc of the same rusted material this time. Surprisingly it isn’t that hard to just push the door open, you’d have expected it to be too rusted to function or barred by the inhabitants or even very noisy to use; but instead it glide silently in a ghastly manner.

>>
>>834710

Now that you’re inside, you can gaze at the full extent of the decay that has taken place with the broken remains of various furniture littering the ground among blood splatters. Whatever forced the knights to leave this place was obviously very violent and just the fact that the walls are still standing is testament to the skill of the builders.

But enough staring, you need to make camp and secure the surroundings, at least if you want to have a good night of sleep. For that you’ll need to-
Wait, what was that !? Looking at Agna and Amakiir you surmise they also heard the deep rumbling growl that came from somewhere, it sounded strangely muted…

Whatever made that noise, you’d wager it’s not friendly and you’re not going to leave your survival up to luck so you need to find this monster and kill it. Of course, you don’t know anything about it or where it is so it’s probably going to be complicated but you can take it as a team.
Granted, you’ve only known each other for about a week and most of that time was spent traveling but still; you have the advantage of number – hopefully – and with the skills each of… okay, the skills you and Amakiir possess you should be able to kill that.

It’s not to belittle Agna or anything but you don’t really know how her powers works and that could be a problem if you have to ask her to do something; while Amakiir’s approach should be more straightforward given that he uses his needle sword to pierce everything.
You order her to stand behind you while Amakiir goes at the front, he is the best at using his weapon while Agna has proven herself to be more of a supporting acolyte.
As the three of you progress forward your mind goes back to what you saw previously, the dust on the ground and the untouched bones that littered the place as if no living thing had been there since ages; yet you face an enemy, how could that be?

The details form into your mind as you try to put the puzzle pieces back together when it suddenly hits you. The entire reason the ground is covered in dust while some creature is roaming those halls is because… it doesn’t touch the ground! You start telling them about what you thought about but you realize that there is no sound coming out of your mouth; in fact you can’t hear anything at all as if the world had just been muted.

Is this an effect of the creature? You’ve never heard of anything like that but then again you’ve discovered a lot of things, both good and bad, in the short time you’ve lived in this era so you can’t really say this surprises you.
It will be interesting to make experiments on the creature if you catch it, it could be the key to a domain of magic you’ve never heard of… But before that you have to hunt it and the fact that you’re under the effect of this spell means the creature must be nearby or know where you are; otherwise it wouldn’t be able to use its power without anything to focus on.

You put a hand on Amakiir’s shoulder and shake him slightly, enough that you draw his attention but not too much that you disrupt his concentration. From the movement of his head, you can guess that he’s asking what’s going on but the hand that goes up to his mouth shows that he has noticed the effect of the predator stalking you.
Agna for her part hasn’t done anything yet but you can see she’s on her guard and that she’s ready to… uh… bolt away if things get too messy.

After a lot of tense gesturing while you wonder why the enemy isn’t attacking, you are all on the same page and ready to tackle on whatever comes your way… At least you are until you see a shadow bolting silently towards Agna that obviously hasn’t heard it coming but you interpose yourself between the creature and its prey, knife bared at the incoming enemy!

The problem is that I can only do a certain number of threads and even if I do I can't just make mini-threads.

I feel like rektus wants to protect his new friends but I feel like it's a bit out of character to just throw himself into a bullet. (Maybe we could reach out with our mind afterwords?)

Would it necessarily be a mini-thread? Could just be the start of another long thread. Also, how many threads do you need at a time? Threads of this length, you're probably only going to have two out of a maximum of four threads up.

While you don’t know what this monster can do there’s no doubt that Agna obviously can’t take as much punishment as you if only because she’s human and you’re a vampire. Keeping this in mind, you shouldn’t even come into harm’s way if you do manage to nail the creature before it can reach you.
It’s a good thing willpower rises up dramatically when in situations of high stress because otherwise the creature could reach you ages before you could manipulate the magic in yourself using your will.

Time is almost distorting and everything seems to slow to a crawl as you steel your mind and forge it into an arrow, an arrow of the coldest steel there has been and ever will be; before long a spike of ice is swirling in your free hand before you throw it towards the abomination before your eyes.
Simultaneously you try to scan it’s mind to stun it but are instead assaulted by a cacophony of kaleidoscopic noises that make your head hurt, a similar effect to the wails you unleash to stun your opponent.

The monster hasn’t noticed your spike and takes it square in the chest, recoiling away while your ally steps out of its reach. Looking closer, you can see deadly serrated claws peering out from the smoky cloak that seem to constitute its body, probably what the creature would have used against Agna.
The beast starts to withdraw but Amakiir gets in the way, standing between the monster and its shelter in the dark. A few quick thrusts later the Sound-Eater falls to the ground as a blast of noise echoes through the entire castle; those things must release all the noise they absorbed in one blast when they die; a good thing being that those kind of creatures are more suited to ambushes and are thus way less dangerous if you manage to evade the initial assault.

Now however, you must hope that there aren’t more denizens to this place or the noise will have surely attracted them; you’re not sure you could survive a direct confrontation with more creatures of this dangerosity.
“Crap, I hope more of these aren’t going to come soon.” pants Agna, still frightened by the encounter “I’m not sure I could take more of these pouncing at me, I usually prefer to stay in the back rows.” she adds before looking around.
“Well, it’s a good thing they are vulnerable to swords and the like.” continues Amakiir “I’d hate to be dependent on Rektus, as much as his magic seems useful. That said, we’ll need to get ourselves some better armor soon because we’re all seconds away from death...”

He’s right on that part, you need to be more prepared next time you do go into a dungeon or the like. Then again, making preparations and plan is what this place is gonna be about once you’re done with it; at least if it’s not overrun with monsters.
Speaking of which, nothing happened since the blast and you believe that any creature that could have been attracted should have come… so that means you’re supposedly alone.

Agreed we could use bone magic to raise some of the skeletons

I'd settle for barriers, spikes. But hey, this is the best situation for getting them to accept using skellingtons. Victims avenging their killers, the two are scared, it's dark. They'll probably allow it.
