You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Seren sits on your lap while you read letters from local lords. Most of them are updates on military forces and assurances of support and loyalty, but a few are excuses and polite explanations for why they can't raise any armies at the moment. No doubt some are valid, but others probably aren't. Sorting them out will be annoying.

"You're getting heavier." You hug Seren and gently kiss here neck.

"Your child is heavy," Seren says. She lightly slaps your hand away. "And kicking, too. I talked to her highness and Esyllt and they have a much calmer time of it."

"Doesn't that make it your fault then?"

"Possibly." Seren turns around to kiss you. "But I still blame you. What do you want to do about all these barons and counts who are too busy or impoverished to join your army?"

"You'd know them better than I do," you say. "What do you think?"

"Some of them honestly can't do it, and those who won't might react poorly if you force their hand," she says. "It might be easier to just give them a way out by asking for money or other resources instead."

A fine, basically, although that would be a crude way to put it.

>[Sovereign/1d8] Demand some form of tribute as compensation from the lords who won't mobilize their armies.
>[Intrigue/1d10] Go through your records to sort out those who genuinely can't raise their armies from those who simply don't want to.

"Okay, let's go through the list again," you say. "Once we've figured out who's lying and who isn't, I'll decide how to deal with them."

"A reasonable course of action," Seren says. "Let's see who's first…"

There are nine people who have refused your polite requests for soldiers. According to Seren, four have good reasons: their territory just isn't large enough, their last harvest was poor, or there's some other reason that prevents them from pursuing a strong military.

Five, however, simply don't want to help. It's true that they wouldn't make much of a difference, but every little bit helps.

"Who do you want to deal with first?" Seren asked.

"Fakers first," you say. "They don't have that many soldiers, but I need all the forces I can gather."

"I'd still advise to let them save face," Seren says. "They'll be grateful for it, and it'll make it look like you're doing them a favour. If you need their help later, they should be more likely to help you."

Money is always useful and armies need to eat. Besides, following Seren's advice would ingratiate you to the local lords.

On the other hand, you are the prince here. Knowing that there are lords of questionable devotion in your service rankles you more than a little.

"I don't have time to deal with them," you say. "I'll ask them for an alternative tribute."

"It's a wise decision, your highness," Seren says. "Pride isn't worth a conflict with your vassals at this point."

"Then you underestimate the size of my pride," you say. "But I get your point."

"As for the ones who are having legitimate troubles…" You look through the list and ponder. "This is going to be a little difficult. I can't push them too far."

"You could just ignore them," Seren says.

"Certainly, but I don't want it to look like I'm giving them preferential treatment," you say. "I'm just showing consideration for their difficult circumstances. This won't be a regular occurrence."

"Perhaps you should offer a reward for their help?" Seren suggests. "They might be more willing to expend their resources if they know they'll receive something for their effort."

Everyone gets their fair share of the army's loot, but perhaps you could arrange a little extra on the side…

As a follow up, This is a good idea. While this may not be a viable option is the short term, once we start showing results and victories, people will take notice of that. Some of the smarter or more cunning rulers will want their heirs to learn from the best. And the best is us.

>>
Sorry, but I have another question Beleaguered. We have magical weapons and other enchantments. But do we have wizards (be it in the classical style, D&D style, or some thing like that) in this world setting? I do not remember us ever encountering one yet.
>>
>>816145
No real wizards, although there are people who play it up. For the most part, they're more like the Alchemists' Guild and blacksmiths who work Valyrian steel in a Song of Ice and Fire, only with a much broader scope.

You and Seren take a bath. Then you have to take a second bath.

"Are you sure this isn't inconvenient for you?" You ask Seren as you wash her back. "You don't need to force yourself for my sake."

"Just because I'm pregnant does mean I don't have needs," she says. "If anything, I'm more frustrated that they're so difficult to take care of."

The two of you finish and return to your room. It looks like your bedmate for the day is Eleri. She's already tucked herself in the sheets.

"Eleri, are you awake?"

"I am now," she grumbles and moves over to give you more space.

You slip into bed and Seren takes the empty spot. Eleri crawls on top of you and places a hand on Seren's belly.

"I guess it shouldn't take much longer now," she says. "Are you nervous?"

"I've gotten used to it," Seren says. "What about you? Jealous?"

Eleri looks pensive.

>"Would you like to have children?"

"Would you like to have children?"

"I'd like to know what it's like," Eleri says, "which is why I'm letting the others go first."

"Well, in any case" - you pull her up a bit to kiss her - "I'm certain you'll make an excellent godmother."

"That's right," Seren says. "If you weren't in the room when they were conceived, you might as well have been."

"And won't that make a nice story to tell them when they're older."

"I'm sure you can write a play or an opera to get the point across while leaving out the details," you tell her.

You cuddle your consort and concubine and fall asleep.

When you wake up the next morning, you're alone in the bed with an angry Olwen standing over you.

"… did I miss a surprise invasion during the last eight hours?"

"Better," Olwen says. "My father's arriving. We need to go meet him."

"Excellent!" You jump out of bed and get dressed. "I'm sure it'll go splendidly."

"Glad you're so optimistic," Olwen says. "Who do you want to bring with you?"

"Since you're so worried about it, let's just bring Reagan," you say. "Maybe it'll ease him into the situation."

"That does take a load off my mind, thank you." Olwen kisses you on the cheek. "I'll get her and Myrddin."

You climb into a carriage and slowly roll through the streets. It's early enough that there aren't that many people getting in your way in the streets.

"What's your father like, Olwen?" Reagan asks.

"Military," Olwen answers. "There's not much else to it. He's a competent duke, but I think he built a reputation on his duties as a paladin in the capital."

"It can make him… difficult to deal with," you say.

"He's always been quite pleasant to me," Myrddin says. "Then again, I never collared his daughter."

Olwen blushes and quickly stuffs her collar in one of her pockets. You could have sworn you'd taken it off.

You reach the gate and wait to the side. The first arrivals are nearby peasants and merchants come to trade in fresh food, but Duke Heath auk Vaughan and his retinue soon rides into the city. Olwen hops off the carriage to greet him.

"Father! Welcome to Degfford."

Duke Heath laughs and climbs down his horse to hug his daughter. "Olwen, I'm glad you're doing well." He then bows to Reagan. "Your highness, it is an honour to meet you at last."

"The honour is mine, your grace," Reagan says with a smile. "The prince and your daughter have both praised you highly."

"Of course." A shadow falls over the duke's face as he glowers down at you despite the fact that, sitting in your carriage, you're very much higher than he is. "Your highness. Hello."

"Greetings, Duke," you say. "Would you like to ride back with us."

"That would be an acceptable course of action."

He sounds utterly thrilled at the thought. You can almost imagine him smiling and sounding pleased. It takes up most of your effort.

Despite his obvious misgivings, Duke Heath climbs into the carriage next to Olwen.

"I'm glad you could join us," you say. "I was hoping I could ask for your assistance with a few matters."

"Yes, Olwen told me," Duke Heath says. "Something about a temple?"

"We've renovated the one in the city," you say. "We just need to attract pilgrims. I was hoping your reputation could help. I might ask for your help with some Olstren matters as well."

"I've heard about that as well," Heath says. "Tell me, what's your opinion on the matter?"

Again, beleagered, I am sorry for pestering you, but i still have some more questions. Seeing I'm envisioning your world setting. Are there many 'Monsters' roaming the world/underdark? The monsters be it prehistoric animals/dinos, typical fantasy creatures (unicorns, dragons, hydras, fey), or even dumping in the whole D&D monster manual library in?
>>

Nah, no monsters. There is some weird stuff out there, but it's more like a platypus or komodo dragons.

>[Intrigue/1d12] "Arrangements have been made so that we'll have all the advantages. Especially the unfair ones."

Can someone confirm for me whether Heath's attitude is fucking stupid or not? Because it seems to me that he's acting like an idiot. If Olwen were my daughter I'd be concerned about whether she were getting enough love and consideration from Meiron, because of the whole six significant others thing, but I would not be glowering at the Victorious Prince. Heath has no reason to believe Meiron is mistreating Olwen, and Meiron is not someone you throw nastiness at unless you have to.

Heath cheers up a little. "That does seem like a good plan," he says. "You know what they say about plans and contact with the enemy, but…"

"That's what preparation is for," Olwen says. "Most problems can be dealt with so long as we're ready for them."

"We only need one victory to set the stage for a successful negotiation," Reagan says. "Although more might be necessary depending on his highness' ambitions and how things go after that."

"When war is used properly, it's merely the extension of diplomacy," Heath says. "And? What would you need from me?"

"I expect to have to deal with several battlefields," you say. "I could use another general."

"We have Olwen and a priestess to assume command in his highness' stead," Myrddin says, "but a more experienced hand would be welcome."

"I'm perfectly capable of commanding an army, Myrddin," Olwen protests. "You should concern yourself with maintaining the lines of communication. So long as you can do your job, the rest of us will do ours."

"It's not so simple, Olwen," Heath says. "When coordinating between several armies, it's necessary to exercise good judgment. You need to know when to seize an opportunity and when to maintain your position. If you make the wrong decision at the wrong time, the entire theatre will be affected."

"Yes, father," Olwen says reluctantly.

"Come to think of it," you say, "this is the first time I'll have to manage a full theatre of war on my own. I'm quite looking forward to it."

Heath nods absentmindedly. "That aside, I understand that you have… many women, your highness. While I can't condemn your decision in light of the Crown Prince's decision to marry a commoner, you have involved my daughter, so I am slightly concerned… You're not doing anything strange, are you?"

Olwen blushes, Reagan hums to herself and looks away and Myrddin pushes up his glasses and smirks.
