“Kotorin, wake up!” a loud whisper reaches your ears.

As you groan and try to sit straight, a piece of chalk flying your way hits you square in the forehead. You yelp and cover your injury as you open your eyes, recoiling at the sight of 「Shiro-sensei」 who looks your way, deeply annoyed.

“Don’t sleep in class…” she says before quickly turning around back to the blackboard.

Flipping to a new page in your notebook, you hold a tired expression while you yawn. You sit in the backrow next to the window, possibly the most optimal seat in a 「Classroom」. Ah, you have a feeling you had a really nice dream as fleeting remnants of happiness and unfulfillment vanish forever.

The girl sitting next to you, Kiririn, pokes you. “Are you okay? You look tired.”

“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” you say, “…I think.”

“Maybe you should go to the nurse?”

In the background, 「Shiro-sensei」 is droning on. “…It was then that the world was split into two… as one lived their lives on the earth, the other watched from the heavens…”

Maybe. Ah, 「Shiro-sensei」 is teaching 「History」, how boring…

So sleepy…

As if on autopilot, you pick up your pencil and let your mind run wild. You wonder… what would you look like in a wedding dress?

Lines and scribbles lay on the paper, your awful doodle bringing a small smile to your face. You think about 「Onii-chan」 for a second, and then try your best to hold back your snickering when you imagine him in a dress too. In a moment later, you find your pencil had inexplicably put down a scene of something that’s… completely not allowed! What is this fantasy!?

Quick as possible, you scratch out everything, afraid that someone might see.

You sit there, half sullen and half embarrassed until suddenly the bell rings and you almost jump out of your chair in surprise, nearly sending your notebook onto the floor.

Underneath the sheets of paper is a 「Love Letter」 someone had slipped into your locker, asking you to meet him on the roof during lunch. It’s been bothering you the entire morning, filling your stomach with butterflies. Not only was there 「no name」 on it, you can’t make out whether it’s a boy or a girl from the handwriting. Uuu, and it’s lunchtime too.

Besides you, Kiririn gets up. “Ahhh, I’m starving. What are you getting today?”

To where, to whom?

Well, you might as well get it over with.

“Kiririn, you go on ahead. I have to do something really quick, I’ll meet you in the cafeteria,” you say.

With a nod, the blonde departs and leaves you to walk down the halls and up the stairs— all the way to the top. Past the door you pushed and into fresh air you walk, your eyes meeting with a lone person standing in the middle of the roof.

Oh boy, he’s one of those people who thinks this is romantic, isn’t it? This is your second letter this year, and as much as that makes you feel happy, you really are in no mood for this kind of romance.

But, he’s kinda cute.

“Hi, 「were you the one who wrote this letter?」” you ask, bringing up the pink envelope.

“Y-yes. I-I’m Saito Hayama, dess,” he stammers.

Is he a 「Kouhai」? Wait, isn’t he in the same class as your 「Otouto」?

Hayama continues, “I’ve been w-watch you from afar, and…”

Ah, that’s where you stop listening. Something feels off. Is it his horns? No, they look fine. Wait, is something watching you? Uuu, what is it? You stand there, deep in thought until you realized he’s starting to end.

“…will you go out with me?!”

Ahh, the boy looks so fragile. How should you handle this?
>Softly. “Sorry, I don’t think I’m ready for a boyfriend yet.”

“Sorry, I don’t think I’m ready for a boyfriend yet,” you say, “The letter was very sweet, though. You said... aah, I wish I could remember the exact words you used. Well, I remember it was very sweet in any case.”

“I-I can wait! Please, we can start out as just friends!”

“Y-you really shouldn’t, there’s a lot of nice girls out there, you know?” you reply.

Guuh! If only you had an 「Onii-chan」 right now! All you have instead is an 「Otouto」, whose efforts while you still appreciate are still completely useless. Oh, why can’t someone swoop down and save you?

And just like that, the door behind you slams open with a kick, the person behind is— speak of the devil.

“…Shidou, what are you doing?” you ask.

“Leave my Onee-chan alone, Hayama!” your 「Otouto」 shouts with great tact, “Can’t you tell she doesn’t want to date you?”

“W-what? You w-were eavesdropping, weren’t you!? Kotori-san n-never said no, and she even said my letter was s-sweet!” the boy continues.

Oh no.

They’re arguing now; at least they aren’t fighting physically. As you try and calm them both down, you sigh while hushing your little brother into the stairs and off the roof, intending to follow behind closely. Jeez, school life is a pain…

You are now 「Onii-chan」. Whatever that means.

“It’s KEY aids,” Kirino flatly explains.

“What are you saying?” says Akiko, “It’s just a 「Japanese Cold」.”

Shiro, pulling out a thermometer from Kotori’s mouth, says quietly, “…40 degrees Celsius… she has a fever.”

You stand at the doorway, looking grimly into the room. Before you in 「Division One」’s room is your sick little sister, tucked in bed and seemingly restless.

Kotori moans, “…Stop it…!”

“Ah Shiro, look what you did. She’s having nightmares about you groping her,” Kirino points out.

“…”

“Kirino, are you okay?” asks Akiko-chan.

You watch as Kirino jokingly flexes her arm, “Of course I am, I’m healthy as ever!”

“No, I meant in your head.”

“Huuh? Hey, what’s that suppo—“

“Shh… quiet down,” Shiro interrupts.

You cross your arms, the voice inside quietly eating at you. You’ve been trying to avoid conflict by going last to the 「onsen」 and getting your own room, but for something like this to happen…! What’s worse is that you smell an 「Oni」, and the heavy scent is all over Kotori. This bastard…! She’s been trying to protect you for a while now, but you knew she was overdoing it. You should’ve been there for her!

Whoever did this, they’re going to pay.

You walk to Kotori, sitting down so you could see her face past her hair. She turns over and the 「wet clothe」 on her forehead falls off. As the others back off to give you space, you give your imouto a 「headpat」 in an attempt to comfort her.

Just like that, she calms back down, her tense body unwinding. Beside you are chatter, words so quiet that it’s hard for your Oni ears to make out. Watching, you see Shiro pull out her 「Oni Radar」 and give it to Kirino, who quickly leaves the room with Shiro although they both separate soon.

Akiko, talking to you, asks, “What do you think?”

Opening your mouth, you find once again you can’t talk. Words are hard to form, sentences harder. What comes out are weird 「Oni grunts」, and you wonder if you are really you.

“Kirino, that girl thinks it’s an Oni.”

You attempt to motion that she’s completely on point but—

“Right? It’s ridiculous. It’s just a 「Cold」,” she says, “Oh hold on, I’ll get Kotori some more water.”

And like that, you find yourself in the room 「alone with Kotori」. A minute passes before she grabs your arm and pulls you closer.

“Onii-chan…”

Suddenly, the door slams shut, the 「foldable steel wrestling chair」 next to it falling onto the tatami mat. The scent of 「Oni」 oozes through the cracks under, creeping closer to Kotori— no, to you!

Sticking close to Kotori, you brace yourself for what’s to come. Barely visible a swirl of mist begins to form from the ground up, causing you to take a step back. Bringing your arm around your 「imouto」 while she hooks the other, you ready yourself—

In an instant, the air whips toward you, sweep around in a wide crescent that you barely dodge. At the end of the arc is a clawed hand, which you traced along, making out the faint outline of someone— an 「Oni」.

And it’s a woman.

Two long horns rise from her head as an elegant crest, her long haired tied to a bun. The missing pupils from her eyes matches yours, her full attention vested onto you.

“I’m so thankful I got to her first. Poor Oh Aych Bee, if only he was a little more prepared,” she hisses, “Why don’t you let go of that wench and come to me?”

You take a step back, your imouto now in your arms.

“You’re the one who did this? I didn’t know there were anything but 「Male Onis」,” you spit.

The woman takes a step closer.

“My name is 「Redline Onee-chan, Mystic of the 「Four Heavenly Kings」」, but you can call me whatever you want,” the Oni says, approaching you, “my dear Onii-chan.”

From tatami mats more mist flows. Behind you is a balcony leading to shrubbery only a single storey below.

You need to create distance; at this rate, Kotori might be caught in the crossfire. A deep breath, and then you turn on your heel. Making a break for it, you leap up and past the wood railing, jumping for the bushes below. In the last moment, you feel the whip of air slicing through your jacket but not through you.

Your feet hit the ground first, the rest of your body slowly easing in as your speed hits zero. Slowly getting back up, your knees ache as you try and to run away. In no time at all a fence stops you in your path, where then you begin running alongside. As the sound of dirt being crushed beneath your heels grow more and more frequent, you begin noticing something seeping from the earth— mist.

This whole place… 「masaka」! The entire 「ryokan」 is under her reach?!

Slamming a foot into the ground, you switch directions, propelling yourself away. You bring your right shoulder closer to your nose, lest you huff too much of whatever it is. Soon, the light of the 「ryokan」 comes into sight again, giving you relief.

As you get closer, you realize that no one is at the front desk. What is this…?!

The mist approaches you once more, as if curling around you like a snake.

Not here.

Breaking into a sprint, you haul yourself out of the 「ryokan」 and into the mountainside, climbing up the trail as fast as you can. The occasional small critter runs away from you as you pant, the mist chasing after you incessantly. So clingy!

Soon, you make it to a clearing where a gargantuan, ancient tree sits in the center of it, flowers dotting the grass around it. With great care, Kotori is set down by the trunk, her breath calm and gentle; you wonder what she’s dreaming about.

Turning around, you face the direction you came from. You doubt you can outrun her, and even if you do, where would you and your 「imouto」 go?

You stretch a little, feeling a little bad about the new holes in the back of your track jacket. Squinting, you barely make out the flowing sign of the 「Enemy Oni」. It’s slower, and you doubt it can surprise you like it can through the 「ryokan」’s walls.

“A little out of breath, dear?” she pokes, “Maybe you can use my lap as a pillow.”

You bend your knees and get into a fighting stance. Ah, your 「foldable steel wrestling chair」 would be handy right now. Or Kotori’s now, anyways; speaking of whom, she should be hidden behind the tree, and maybe that would be good enough.

“C’mon, grandma. Bring it,” you say.

With a scowl, she disappears again, the mist around her flowing outwards.

In a burst of speed powered by your 「Oni muscles」, you charge forward, gunning for her left. As you close in, you stick your arm out, ready to clothesline her.

Whoosh, your arm sweeps past empty air. But unexpectedly from behind—!

“Got you!~” her voice calls out as she lands a clean hit.

You fall forward, attack on your back sending you off your feet. Bracing yourself, your hands catch the ground as you tumble to the side, stopping in front of a large 「pebble」.

Maybe…

The sound of movement closes in, and you go for it!

With a wild swing, you hurl the rock at her and watch as it carves through the mist, a tunnel of clean, clear air left as a trail and then—

SMACK

Right on her forehead, she falls back down yelping, disappearing once more.

The path of where pebble had flown, the mist seems to move around, as if avoiding it…

Out of the corner of your eye, you spot the movement; a swirling tornado of fog flying your way! You jump to the side, barely getting away as it smashes into the tree line beside you. It’s denser than usual, and you feel like if you got any closer, or even just breathed it in, you would be terribly nauseous instantly.

“Is that all of you guys got? Cheap tricks?” you taunt.

“Shut up! You take that back!” she says, the sound echoing all around you.

As you’re about to prepare for her to come at you again, you notice a figure shuffling by the large tree in the center— your imouto! Has the 「Heavenly King」 noticed yet?

At this rate, Kotori will be in trouble! You must… you must distract the 「Heavenly King」! And the only way… is…

To seduce?

Heavens help you, you’ve never done this before— this isn’t a dating sim! But you do it anyway. You 「pose」.

From thin air comes a flash of claw once more, and it swings down, just to stop mid-air.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

Blinking, it takes you a few seconds to come up with an answer, “I was just… just admiring your horns. They’re so elegant and long, they’re so beautiful compared to mine; but you know, I have another longer horn—“

You choke on your words, trying your hardest not to curl up into a ball and die. The 「Heavenly King」 looks at you blankly, and then lets out a small laugh.

“It’s a bit too late for flattery. Maybe you can think about what you’ve done after I’ve captured you!”

She attacks again, but this time it’s noticeably slower— is this the legendary 「Style」 of the 「ISDF」?! As her arm sweeps down, you sidestep and pivot to her back. In an instant, you enter a grapple, your arms tightly wrapping around her—

Hold on a moment…! There’s no way a girl can be this flat, especially someone of this age! This is… this person is… a 「trap」!

You cry out along with 「him」 as you swing up and back, dropping the 「Heavenly King」 upside-down behind you with such a strength that 「he」’s sent flying, 「his」 body smashing into the dirt below and finishing your suplex.

As you get back onto your feet in your state of 「100% Confusion」, the 「Trap Oni」 on the ground beside you struggles to get up. Quickly, you grab both of 「his」 horns and hold 「him」 down.

“N-no! Please, I don’t want to go back! I’m sorry I pretended to be an Onee-chan, I just wanted to be loved!~”

“Pleaase!~”

“Hey, don’t forget about my little sister. You better fix her up,” you say.

“S-she’ll be fine! I swear! It’s only a 「Cold」!”

Oh no.

No. You don’t want to hear any more of this. In fact, you don’t think you want to see this guy ever again—

“I said, I’m not… I’M NOT READY FOR A BOYFRIEND YET!” a voice comes screaming out from behind.

You recoil in terror to see your 「imouto」 jumping forward in a frenzy, her face red as a tomato as she comes in swinging; her fist is already travelling at the speed of love, coming to a stunning conclusion when it collides with the 「Oni」’s face, sending him a yard back and into next week. He’ll be fine.

“H-hey Kotori, it’s okay! Calm down,” you say, patting her head.

She whimpers and starts tearing up, dropping on her knees.

“Waah, I want my Onii-chan!” she cries.

Is she sleep-walking right now? It’s then that you see her phone slip out of her pocket and onto the grass, and you pick it up.

There’s a number passcode, huh.

What could it be…?

You punch in four numbers — and it’s wrong. Not her birthday.

…What about yours?

It clicks and unlocks, giving way for you to call someone. You blink a few times in semi-surprise, then you pull yourself together. Ugh, this is going to be a pain, trying to talk. As you sit down onto the grass, Kotori drops her head onto your lap, and you begin stroking her hair, careful not to hurt her with your claws. Slowly, over the course of a minute, she goes from sniffling to deep sleep.

Ah, 「how the roles have reversed」.

It’s been a week since the 「Ryokan Incident」, and since then you’ve gotten all the rest you need. You brace yourself as you stand beside the accursed 「oven」. Cooking is easy; you can usually whip up anything you want on intuition and it would come out at least edible.

But baking.

The last time you tried it, the neighbors had called the fire department because they thought your house was going down. But it’s okay now: there’s no way the steel walls of the 「ISDF」 can burn down, right? …Right?

Only the sound of the refrigerator running can be heard, the appliance itself stark white, just like everything else in the spacious room. Everything is so clean, you can easily see your reflection anywhere, especially the marble countertop. With the help of Shiro, you managed to get permission to use the kitchen for the night. Ah, you should start. Whipping out your trusty kitchen knife, you—

Wait, you don’t need a knife for this, right?

Oh god, what are you even making?
>Just… just make some cookies.

A cake. It’s going to be the best cake, the grandest, biggest cake ever—

Suddenly, nightmarish flashbacks of what happened three years ago echo through your mind. You shudder in terror, and give up the thought of shooting for the stars. Not even all the 「Home Economic」 classes in the world can help you forget.

Okay, focus: ingredients! 「Imouto Blood」 and 「Love Nectar」, right?

N-no hold on right there! you tell your brain. W-what kind of a person would you be if you used those things!? What would 「Onii-chan」 think!? You shake them off using all of your willpower, hurriedly too, in case you get any more 「yandere」 impulses.

Okay, actual ingredients! A large bag of flour sits on the counter alongside a pouch of sugar and a dozen eggs nearby. Also butter, leek, milk, salmon, chocolate, and is that tofu?

Ah, you can feel your spirit breaking before you even start.

No! You need to do this, for 「Onii-chan」!

“Oh, Kotori,” Akiko calls, walking by, “What are you up to this late?”

“Akiko!” you reply, “Ahh, I’m trying to bake a cake…”

“…Are you?” she questions, eyeing what’s on display, “Do… do you need help?”

Do you?
>No! This is your cake, it has to be made by you!

No! This is your cake, it has to be made by you!

You take a look at the tofu sitting on the countertop again. O-okay, maybe just a little…?

“I-I… uh” you stammer in uncertainty.

With a knowing sigh and smile, Akiko says, “Alright, I get it. I’ll stand by and watch you, okay? To stop any fires.”

“O-okay,” you nod, as you get back to work.

Bringing the mixer over, you begin pouring the ingredients into the… 「Japanese Cup」 cup? Okay, add the wet thingy to the dry thingy. You turn it on, pressing one of the too-many buttons on there and watch as it combines everything together, the faded sight of 「mist」 entering the 「concoction」.

Wait, what?

In an explosion of goo, the dough splits into a thousand sticky blobs that splatter the entire room. It hits everywhere: the floor, your face, the ceiling, Akiko’s clothes, everything.

“Eeep!” you yelp.

“Ahh! Oh shoot, so that’s where it went!” Akiko says.

“W-what? What just happened?”

“Ahah, ohh. Remember how we captured that 「Heavenly King」 a while back? Some of his mist got into the vents before we managed to make the cell airtight,“ she says, grabbing a cloth and helping you clean up, “Well, it looks like we found it.”

Ahh, you can feel the critical 「Emotional Damage」 that just took place. Pulling bits of dough out of your hair, you feel the life draining away from your body as you slowly get ready for the next attempt.

No, you can’t cry here! Okay, deep breaths. Inhale, exhale. Calm down first, you got this! The cake won’t be any good if you keep going like this!

A minute passes and you finally compose yourself as you enter a state of 「Absolute Zen」. Yes… okay!

“…Kotori?” Akiko asks worriedly.

You give a battle cry, “I’m ready!”

Ah, maybe the energy level is a bit too high, but it’s fine! Your hands move like a 「Flowing River」, carefully and gracefully pouring the ingredients back in. Proportions? Bah, forget that! If your intuition can help you make a perfect 「Omurice」, then who needs whatever 「Metric Cup」 recipe anyway?

With that completed, you toss the batter filled baking pan into the preheated oven and hope for the best. No, you know it’s going to be the best!

“Nice, it looks good! Ahh, I miss 「Home Ec」, it was so fun,” Akiko reminisces.

“I didn’t know you like to cook, Akiko.”

“Heheh, I don’t really; I only like making sweets,” she says, a little embarrassed, “Hey, what’s next?”

“Frosting, I think.”

“Hmm, no filling inside?”

“T-that might be a little too much for me,” you reply.

“I-I see…”

She looked a bit excited for a moment.

Roll 1d100 to not ruin everything, best of three.
Should you...?

You’ll just make the filling yourself! Uuu, what are you making? Fruit? N-no, maybe some sort of chocolate thing? Yeah, that’ll work.

And so, you melt the chocolate and beat the ingredients together, mixing them and working it until it comes out looking pretty good. It’s probably the best attempt you’ve ever tried in your life! You have a taste and even find it’s at the perfect sweetness.

“Yes, nothing can go wrong now!” you cheer.

“W-wait, that’s a flag!”

You reach for a piping bag, but your hand never makes it— the cord to the mixer catches your foot, and as you fall down the mixer goes down with you. In a panic, you try to grab onto the countertop, a drawer, anything to catch your fall! …And it’s the oven door.

Akiko utters under her breath, “…「Shimata」.”

Your hand latches onto the handle and accidentally pull it down with your weight, swinging the oven open and jolting the entire thing with such a force that all the 「contents」 get knocked an inch out— just enough for it to start toppling over.

“N-nononono!”

Quickly moving over to the side, you get up in a panic and step into the mixer bowl full of icing, causing you to slip once more! Your embedded foot swings back in a kick, inadvertently launching it into the oven and getting it all over the inside. Slowly, a dollop of it falls down onto wiring.

Sparks fly out as the pan of batter falls out and upside down onto the floor, emptying its contents.

“EEEEP!”

“K-Kotori!” Akiko says, running over, stopping, and then running back presumably to get a fire extinguisher.

You stand about a few meters back, a foot covered in icing in the air, and watch as the fire catch onto the fallen down bags of sugar and flour that the mixer took down with it. Ah… everything’s hopeless…

Roll 1d100 to salvage what’s left, best of three.
You can’t go to Onii-chan empty handed…

Akiko rushes over with the extinguisher, frantically figuring out how it works before unleashing the torrent of foam at the inferno before you. You drop down onto the floor on your behind, spirit completely broken. Eventually the fire stops, but the smell of burnt still lingers in the air.

Akiko, seeing your expression, pats you on the back softly, “It’s okay, Kotori, you can still use the 「microwave」.”

You feel your eyes watering up, “N-nooo!”

“It’s not as bad as you think, really!”

You turn your face to her and ask, “R-really?”

“Really.”

Trusting her, you get back at it. You… you came here to make a cake, and you’re not leaving until you do! With extra care this time and a little bit of cord-untangling from Akiko, you put the new, second batch of batter into the 「microwave」, finishing the icing and filling not long after.

With nothing left to do, you carefully go over to the 「Potentially Incredibly Hazardous Appliance」 and ever so slowly look in.

“It looks good…” you say.

“It does.”

You listen to the peaceful hum of the 「microwave」, attempting to shake off your incredible 「Emotional Scarring」 that just occurred today. After a long wait and a cautious assembly, you managed to safely secure the cake inside the fridge. Akiko left first, but it is pretty late right now.

With a spring in your step, you skip away from kitchen, a good part of it in complete ruin.

Yes! You can’t wait to see his face in the morning! Ah wait, maybe it’ll be of 「horror」 and 「worry」 from you trying to bake something again...

Well, with you being unhurt, 「you’re sure he’ll be happy anyway」.

Thank you for playing! Things got a little “super serious” this week, but I hope that wasn’t too much of a turn off.

I’ll be running again next week, which may or may not be the last thread. Running this for so long, it feels a bit overdone. Nevertheless, I'll see you guys then!

I liked it
The way you found a way to insert all of our imputs and still make it seem like it came from a single, if conflicted, mind was great
The combat was interesting, if a little confusing, but i felt my inputs mattered when they did.
The pacing was too rushed for my liking, i would have liked if we explored more about the characters and setting, but since you weren't planning to run this for too long, it is fine
I liked the art, it went along with and enhanced the writing
I can''t say you conveyed too well how the mechanics worked, but they were easy to pick up and use
The time between uptades was within the stardard, and with pictures to boot!
There were some characters that were somewhat fleshed out that should have stayed in the background for easier readability, and for fleshing out the "main" cast instead
The tone was fine, it stuck to its guns and never became overly serious, and if it did it always remained wacky.

Sorry if this seems too generic for feedback.
Even if i liked it, there was not much for the to draw conclusions from.
I like it/10
