You are Paxious Dromus, a Zabrak force sensitive in the Old Republic Era who has just passed his final test to become a Jedi Initiate at the Temple on Tython. Now you can formally begin your training within the Order and soon, be chosen by a Master or a Knight to be a Padawan to.

But right now, you’re more focused on the fact that Jorraan, who always looks as if he ate a Mandalorian for lunch, is pinned to the floor, his arm being twisted by none other than Ara, the spunky redhead you met after a swordfight with a Jedi Master.

“Say you’re sorry!” Ara says on top of him, with a knee on the small of his back.

“But this just proves my point! You are a warrior and would make a suitable maaaaaaay--”

His words are cut off as Ara twists his arm harder.

Nazz stands beside you, a mixture of bemusement and alarm painting her face. “Maybe we should eat lunch outside,” she says as she watches the spectacle.

What will you do?

> Go eat lunch with Nazz outside

You can’t help but giggle at the sight and it seems many of the other Initiates agree with you. You quickly collect yourself though and try to break up the fight.

“Ara, go easy on him, you’re in a Jedi Temple, not a dueling ring on Nar Shaddaa,” you say, unable to completely hide the enjoyment at the spectacle these two have made.

Ara rolls her eyes but gives a little smile as she lets Jorraan up. She sits back on a nearby table as the crowd of other Initiates audibly sighs in disappointment at the fight being over. “You really should know better, Jorraan,” she mutters to herself.

“Yeah Jorraan,” echoes Nazz as you and she takes a seat across from Ara, “How did you think that was an okay thing to say?”

Jorraan gets up while nursing his arm, “It was a compliment!”

“It was unnecessary,” Ara replies curtly.

You and Nazz quickly grab some food, Nazz squeezing just the tiniest bit as she loads her plate nearly a foot high the fried gizka greasers. You sit back down. It seems Ara and Jorraan are refusing to talk to one another now.

What do you do?

You get up and circle around the table, giving Ara a light slap on top of her head. She recoils and clenches her fist as if to retaliate, but stops herself as you move back around to your side of the table where you give a slightly harder bop to Jorraan who responds with a confused, “Hey!”

“Okay, kids,” you tell them, doing your best imitation of your own father, “Play nice. We’re going to be seeing a lot of each other.”

Nazz giggles at your paternal demeanor, looking between Ara and Jorraan, exclaiming, “Oooooh, you guys are in trouble~”

Ara mutters something about you not being her father while Jorraan just looks like a guilty little kid. Jorraan lets out a very genuine sounding, “I’m sorry.”

“Now, what exactly was it that you said, Jorraan?” you ask, seated back between him and Nazz.

Jorraan gives a nervous look to Ara, “If you promise not to try to break my arm when I say it this time, I’ll tell him.”

Ara gives a shrug as if to approve.

“I told her that she’d make a good mate.”

Ara suddenly stretches her hand forward as if to grab out at Jorraan who nearly falls off his seat on the lunch table trying to get away before realizing she was just stretching her arms while yawning.

“She seems like the strongest warrior here so I thought she’d make a good mate. Not for me, just in general,” Jorraan says quickly.

You shoot Ara a dirty look over her antagonizing of Jorraan.

Nazz jumps in saying, “Oh, that’s not as bad, I guess. I thought you were looking for some Red Light District type of action when you just said she’d make a good mate.”

“Maybe I don’t want a mate at all, Jorraan,” Ara says, still unwilling to not be angry at him.

What do you do?

Ara actually laughs at your comment, saying, “Force, I wish,” before taking a sip of water.

“Besides Jorraan, from her reaction, she would clearly make a terrible mate!” you say with a hint of a smile.

“Hey! I’d make a great...I mean...you’re a...terrible mate!” Ara stutters for a comeback.

“Actually, I think Paxious would make a great mate,” say Nazz, who starts to giggle uncontrollably as she finishes her though, “Because he’s always horny!”

The table goes silent except for Nazz laughing at her own joke. It seems everyone’s calmed down.

“You know,” Ara says, “You were quite the father figure for a bit there, Paxious.”

“Sorry if I was patronizing but this is the way I know how to mediate an argument and I learned it from MY father,” you reply to her.

“Hey, how old are you, anyway?” Ara says.

“I’m 15 galactic standard years old, almost 16,” you tell them.

“Geez, what do they feed you on that farm?” Ara replies. “I’m 17.”

“I’m 16! Hah! Second place!” says Nazz, offering a high five to Ara who at first refuses to take it, but eventually relents.

“I’m 13, I think,” says Jorraan.

Nazz almost spits out her food as he says this.

“That makes me feel a lot worse about twisting your arm,” Ara says, rubbing the back of her head, “I’m sorry, Jorraan, I guess it’s a bit of a touchy subject. I shouldn’t take it out on you.”

As she apologizes, Lu sits down at the table beside Ara. He yawns and starts to dig into his food before saying, “So did you hear that one scary guy is questioning the Librarian?”

“What? She’s the most stereotypical Jedi Master I’ve ever met! What makes Hallar think she’s the Sith plant?” Ara skeptically says.

“Maybe he thinks there’s nothing here so he’s just doing it because he has to?” Nazz points out.

“My dad says it’s always the quiet ones,” replies Jorraan.

You decide to go and ask Master Beril about that vision you had.

“Hey Lu, you reminded me I need to have a talk with Master Beril,” you say.

“I’ll go with you,” says Lu, “This whole secret Sith thing seems pretty interesting.”

“Oh! I’ll go too!” Nazz says with a mouthful of Correllian potatoes.

“I’d love to but I promised Jorraan I’d teach him how to fight hand to hand,” says Ara.

“You’re still gonna do it!” says Jorraan, suddenly excited like a kid on Life Day.

Finishing your plate, you, Nazz, and Lu head to the Library. As you enter, you notice one of the rooms between the old books and holorecords has some voices coming from it. You could wait here for Master Beril to come out, or you could try to listen in on what’s happening.

You briefly consider trying to listen in on the conversation You take a seat at one of the tables to wait for the meeting to be done. Nazz sits next to you as Lu walks near the door and squats down just to the left of it.

“Lu!” Nazz loudly whispers, “You are going to get us in trouble!”

“Relax! I’ll only get me in trouble!” Lu says with a grin as he gets in a position to meditate. It seems he had the same idea you did.

At first you wait to watch what happens but it soon becomes apparent that the meeting isn’t nearly over yet. Looking for something interesting and quiet, you grab the nearest book from a shelf and thumb through it a bit. You open to a page where the author seems to be critiquing crossguard lightsabers, describing them as “unstable and more flash than functionality.” You’ve never seen a crossguard saber before. Maybe this book is why.

You’re startled as Lu puts a hand on your shoulder. Nazz leaps up exclaiming, “I wasn’t napping, mom I...oh. Hi guys!”

As she says this, Hallar and Beril walk out of the room, apparently done.

“...sorry for any time I’ve cost you,” Hallar says in his usual tired tone.

“One does not fault the fish for swimming, Master Hallar. You are merely doing your duty,” Master Beril replies.

Master Hallar then approaches the table that you, Lu, and Nazz are sitting at. Fear creeps into the back of your head as he raises a hand first towards you, then moving to Nazz, then resting on Lu.

“You,” he says, “That was very rude. If you were my Padawan, you’d be punished.”

Hallar walks away without another word and Lu looks like he’s just stuck his head in a Rancor den.

Master Beril approaches you, “Ah, Paxious. I’m sorry if I’ve kept you waiting. Was there something you needed?”

What will you do?

“I...I had a sort of dream, or a vision.”

Master Beril raises an eyebrow at this. Lu and Nazz both give you a look of awe, as if they’re looking at one of the Jedi from the holovids come to life.

“What sort of vision would this be?” Master Beril says.

You describe the red lightsaber opening on the temple grounds and what looked like a battle between ancient Jedi and Sith. Master Beril listens with increasing interest as you describe the Sith fleeing.

“A vision of history. Interesting,” she says as she approaches one of the book shelves and sorts through until she finds an old, dusty book. “Here it is.”

“What you saw during your meditation was the formation of the Jedi as we know it. In ancient history, the Jedi were both light and dark, intertwined to balance each other. But then there was the First Schism, when the Dark Jedi were cast out and fled Tython, never to return,” she says, “But why would this vision befall you? Perhaps the Sith are making a return to Tython, or perhaps the Order is due for another schism. Or perhaps it is a warning against that division. Or maybe you are just strong in the Force.”

“Thank you Master Beril,” you say with a short bow.

“It is no trouble, Paxious. It’s not every day a Initiate has a vision of the past.”

“Oh yeah, how often is that even a thing, Master Beril?” Nazz asks.

“Well, I believe I have talked with around a dozen Masters who have told me of visions such as yours. I have talked with six Knights who have had similar experiences. Two Padawans in my time have approached me with visions. One was Master Hallar while I was a but a young apprentice to the old Librarian. But I have never heard of such visions from one as young as you, Paxious.”

“You knew Master Hallar?” asks Nazz.

“I believe your sharp-eared friend could tell you more of that,” says Master Beril as Lu blushes. “But yes. We were familiar. I am eight years his senior and offered him guidance.”

“So why does he think you’re a Sith?” Nazz asks.

Master Beril laughs, “He does not. But his job is to investigate and so he does. He took the opportunity to visit an old friend. And, besides the war-hardened, librarians do have a habit of finding themselves tempted by the dark more than most, according to history. Now, you three should get to dinner.”

“Thank you, Master Beril, have a good night!” you tell her.

She waves at the three of you as she lifts a book from the shelves to her hands and begins to read.

The three of you make your way back to the cafeteria and find it relatively crowded. You spot Ara and Jorraan, looking incredibly sweaty and covered in small bandages. Before you join them, you put a hand on Lu’s shoulder.

“So what was it that you overheard in there?” you ask.

Lu seems a bit nervous. “Well, it wasn’t really important. It was personal stuff between them.”

Nazz asks, “What type of personal stuff? Like ‘how’s the books? Oh they’re fine.’ or like PERSONAL stuff?”
“Hallar had his Padawan with him when he was captured and he’s the only one who got out. They were just talking about that,” Lu says.

“Oh,” you say.

With that, you sit down to a slightly glum meal, brightened by Ara and Jorraan describing their sparring session.

Exhausted from the day, you go to bed directly after dinner, preparing for your first day of training as a Jedi tomorrow.

You dream of an eerie cave, the inside holding only darkness. A familiar voice echoes from inside it, yelling, "Save me!" but the words ring and echo almost mockingly, menacingly.

You wake to find you're late for your first Intermediate swordsmanship class.

Quickly putting on your brown Initiate robes, you make your way to the sparring room that you saw just to the left of the Library. You've made it just in time.

A Jedi Master stands in front of a much smaller crowd of students. You find Jorraan and Nazz in the crowd.

"Now students," he begins, "The Jedi with their lightsaber is like water. They do not go around obstacles, but through them. They bend to whatever shape is necessary in the battle."

Opening two yellow lightsabers, he begins an impressive demonstration of a number of different lightsaber forms.

"I am Master Rogand, and today you will choose a lightsaber form to begin practice with."

Master Rogand closes one of his lightsabers places it on his belt. He grips his other lightsaber with both hands, standing squarely in a battle ready position. He swings the lightsaber through the air, strong, resolute, and confident.

“This is Shii-Cho, the basis for all other saber forms. You will all learn this before moving on to other forms. It is confidence and it is simplicity. I fear not the one who practices every form once, I fear the one who practices one form ten thousand times.”

Taking the saber in one hand, he puts his other behind his back and narrows his stance, standing up taller. His stance invites challenge and welcomes the clash of another blade. Small flicks of the wrist and quick jabs forward pepper the air in front of him.

“Makashi. This form was made to combat Shii-Cho. It is graceful, patient, and precise. When practicing Makashi, one must become water and flow around your opponent, defeating them bit by bit as the current carries away the shore.”

Rogand grips the blade with two hands once again holding it very close to himself. He widens his stance and bends his knees as if sitting on an invisible chair. Suddenly, he dances through the crowd of students, using his wide base and bent knees to quickly sidestep at a pace you didn’t know was possible.

“Soresu is the fortress you take with you always. It is the eye of the storm, the calm, in any battle. Learn it well and you will be the rock by which your comrades prevail. You will exhaust the enemy’s onslaught and reap the reward of a slow man’s victory.”

Narrowing his stance just slightly, Master Rogand begins swinging wildly through the air, a flurry of strikes blurring through the air in front of the students. It is wild, uncontrolled, aggressive, and strong.

“Ataru attacks. The best way to protect others many times is to strike down those who would threaten them. The more you strike, the stronger you strike, and the faster you strike, the more you can save. Like the current cuts down all that resists its movement, so does Ataru cut through your enemies.”

Leaping into the air, Rogand lands in what looks similar to the Soresu stance, but is slightly narrower, with the blade angled more outward rather than directly up. He peppers in strong slashes and stabs with sudden leaps and runs.

“Once two forms, become one now. Shien Djem So does not waste an opponent’s attack, but lets it be put against them. When Shien Djem So is trapped, it finds a better battlefield. It moves quickly and quietly, the undertow, the clouds before rain.”

Rogand follows with an impressive stream of attacks on the air that seem to show bits and pieces of the previous forms combined. Quick stabs follows by two handed swings, flips and leaps, sprints and stops all flowing into one another.

“Learn the principle, abide by the principle, and dissolve the principle. In short, enter a mold without being caged in it. Obey the principle without being bound by it. Do this, and you will find the sixth form, Niman. It is trained improvisation. It is the knowledge of all and application of none. It will look radically different for you than it does for me.”

Closing his saber, Master Rogand smiles good naturedly and gestures behind him. “For the next week, we will learn Form 1, Shii-Cho until I am satisfied with you all. However, this does not mean you are bound to use it the way I demonstrated. There are versions of Shii-Cho with dueling sabers, two lightsabers, saberstaffs, and even crossguard sabers. I ask that you choose a practice saber and pick a sparring partner. Today you will learn and implement the basics with your chosen practice sabers. If you wish to use a different kind of saber than I have here, such as a single handed saberstaff or a crossguard saber, then please let me know.”

Behind Master Rogand are 3 types of practice sabers: the standard saber, the dueling saber, and the saberstaff.

You grab one of the practice saberstaffs, observing the double-sided blade. You wonder if it works similarly to the staffs you used to chase the Kath hounds off the farm at home.

Taking it in your hands, you begin to search the other students for a sparring partner. You see that Jorraan has picked a saberstaff as well. The way he’s swinging it around though, it looks like he plans to use the weapon with one hand. Nazz, on the other hand, has taken a dueling saber. Looking through the other students in the intermediate saber class, about 15 in total, you see one saberstaff weilder besides Jorraan and yourself, one other girl besides Nazz with a dueling saber, a boy with two dueling sabers, five just have the normal practice saber with another three weilding two of them. There’s one kid asking Master Rogand for a crossguard saber.

You spot the boy who chose the crossguard saber and call out to him.

“Hey kid! Any chance you’ve got a partner yet?” you say with a good-natured grin.

The boy, an Arkanian offshoot it looks like, nearly scoffs at you. Clearly he’s very confident in his ability.

“I do now. Let’s see what you’ve got horn-head.”

Oh, it is on.

Master Rogand raises his voice amidst the students. You look at him and notice Jorraan and Nazz are partners.

“Our goal of this first part is to use all aspects of form one. Grip your blades with two hands, firmly. If you have two blades, bring them close together and strike as if they are one. Your swings should be forceful without take too much windup,” he says as he walks among the students, pairing up with a Twi'lek girl with a standard saber who didn’t get a partner.

>Critical Success

You only open one side of the saberstaff to start. This Arkanian opens his crossguard saber and readies himself to begins to circle you. You notice how close his feet are together combared to Master Rogand. He runs in and swings at you wildly. You notice how much more exaggerated and slow this kid’s movements are. You barely have to take a step to the side to avoid the slice. Enraged by this, the Arkanian attacks again, only for you to sidestep it again.

Twice more you do this until finally, you raise your practice saber and deflect his strike. You were expecting his strikes, full of anger, to be stronger. But they’re unfocused and uncontrolled. Pushing him off you, you raise your blade with both hands firmly grasping it.

You mimic what you saw Master Rogand do in his demonstration of the form. Striking downward at the boy, he brings up his blade in an attempt to block, but accidentally burns himself on the crossguard of the blade, causing him to lose focus. When you make contact with the blade, it launches through the air, landing 15 feet behind you.

The boy’s eyes fill with fear and he turns around to retrieve the blade. You let him go get it. You’re here to learn, not to give the kid too many burns.

What will you do?

You hear a yell from Master Rogand behind you, “Excellent, Paxious! Good form! Claitan, you need to keep track of your own movements better. You are too uncontrolled.”

“Well, ‘Claitan’,” you say as he retrieves his blade, “Just so you know, I’ve got more than just horns in this head.”

As you say this, you open the second blade of the saberstaff and raise it to guard yourself. Claitan places both his hands a bit lower on the saber, distancing himself a bit from the crossguard. He moves in for another round of attacks. His look is of angry determination.

He attacks low this time, stabbing upward. You realize that this might be the advantage of the crossguard blade. You can’t hit him when he’s attacking low like this. However, his grip doesn’t look very strong on that blade. As he slashes upward at you, you slash downward at the crossguard, causing Claitan’s hands to slide up on the blade and get burnt by the crossguard. Surprised by the pain, Claitan drops the blade again.

“Damnit! This crossguard is retarded!” Claitan shouts out in anger. Suddenly, there’s a hand on his shoulder and you notice that Master Rogand is standing directly behind him. Claitan freezes.

“Claitan! Frustration is not how Jedi react to failure. Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. Although I personally do not like the crossguard saber, it has its uses. The blade was made for practitioners of Form 1 when facing practitioners of Form 2. You must hold the blade firmly and strike with less flamboyance. Simplicity is the advantage of Form 1.”

While Rogand talks to Claitan, you notice Nazz and Jorraan seem to be exchanging blows evenly, with Jorraan repeatedly pushing Nazz back with his superior strength, then Nazz getting behind Jorraan’s guard and forcing him to retreat.

“Alright, class. That is enough for now. Next time, we will focus completely on form. You may keep your practice sabers to use in your spare time. Until tomorrow!” says Master Rogand.

OOC I don't really know about crossguard sabers. The design suggests that there's no 'guard' per se on normal lightsabers but in several times in the movies you see sabers binding against each other.
>>
>>848417
Yeah, I see that too. From what I can tell, sabers don't slide as easily as normal blades do, but they can still slide. So a crossguard is a good idea, but one made from stuff that can also hurt you is a bit of a problem. Plus with the cylindrical nature of lightsabers compared to swords, you limit your range of motion a lot more with a traditional crossguard from a longsword. A circular crossguard made from some lightsaber-proof material would be optimal IMO

You make your way over to Jorraan and Nazz. Both of them having light burns on them from the practice sabers and both breathing heavily.

"Paxious," Jorraan says, still slightly out of breath and possessing a comical burn on his nose from a particularly nasty hit from Nazz, "You are a great warrior but no females think you would make a good mate because that would be impolite."

Nazz bursts out laughing, falling to the ground and grabbing her knees at Jorraan's comment. Finally recovering, she comments on your sparring match with Claitan, “Geez, Pax. That poor Arkanian has more burns than the lining on a swoop engine! Where’d you learn to fight like that?” Nazz says as she gets up off the dirt she was sitting on to face you.

Well, it’s better than the names your younger brothers used to call you at home.

“Yes!” says Nazz, giving a fist pump. “I am the queen of nicknames! Jorraan, your new nickname is Jor. Wait no, Aan. No! Annie! Got it! You’re Annie now!”

“What, no! That’s stupid!” Jorraan says in protest.

“Well then it fits you perfectly,” says Nazz who again begins laughing at her own joke.

Jorraan furrows his brow a bit at the comment.

Deciding to change the subject, you ask, “So how was beginner lightsaber class, guys?”

Lu is disappointed he isn’t getting an answer from Ara, but accepts it. Ara seems happy with the change in subject.

“It went well. We didn’t do anything today, just talked about the different forms and then chose practice sabers,” says Ara pulling out two standard practice sabers.

“From the looks of the beauty mark on Jorraan’s nose though,” Lu comments, “You guys got to spar a bit.”

Jorraan goes cross-eyed looking at his nose and Nazz giggles at him.

“We did get to see a few sparring matches, but the teacher had everyone go one by one so that he could correct like everything,” adds Ara. “There was this one kid who was the first to volunteer. I think he might be the absolute worst uhh…”

Ara stops talking for a second, seeing something behind you. “worst potatoes I’ve ever eaten! Yeah, don’t you guys agree?”

Nazz looks insulted, “You take that back! These potatoes are the Force’s gift to man!”

Finally, you look behind yourself to see Jac has approached your table. From the cheerful look on his face, it looks like he didn’t hear what Ara was saying.

Jac’s face suddenly gets serious once he sits down though. “Did you guys hear that the Flesh raider attacks are getting so bad that they’re gonna recruit some initiates to help keep them under control? I’m definitely signing up for that!”

“WAIT!” Ara says, looking genuinely alarmed for Jac, “Umm, maybe that’s not a good idea for you.”

Jac looks discouraged but Ara quickly recovers, “Because you have so much potential! Yeah! You need to train that! On your own! In not mortal danger!”

You think Ara might be a bad liar. Jac doesn’t seem to notice though as he brightens right back up.

“Well,” you say, “If you ask me, Jac, I think that it’s great that you’re helping out even before you become a Padawan. That’s what a true Jedi would want to do.”

Jac lights up, eyes nearly tearing up at you insinuating he is a ‘true jedi’. He gets up from the table resolutely.

“Thanks for the words of encouragement, Paxious! I’m gonna go train right now to get ready!”

As he runs out of the cafeteria, he trips over nothing and hits his head hard on the ground, the whole cafeteria going silent to wait for him to move. “I...am okay…” he says, slowly getting up and continuing his enthusiastic run.

Ara gives you a dirty look. “What are you doing?! He is going to get himself killed!”

“No he won’t,” you say with an optimistic smile, “Because I’ll be there too.”

Ara calms slightly but still looks worried.

“Soooooooooo~” chimes in Nazz as her face gets uncomfortably close to Ara’s, “Your seem pretty worried about Jac~”

“Yes, Ara, I thought you were not wanting a mate~” Jorraan chimes in, showing an unusual amount of perception.

Ara makes a fist a Jorraan cowers under the table.

“It’s not like that,” she tells you all flatly.

“Then what were you doing getting all worried about him there?” Nazz asks, not letting up.

“I don’t know, what were you and Paxious doing in the Master’s meditation chamber?” she says with a sly smile.

Nazz’s face actually reddens a little. “Me and Pax were meditating! Honest!”

“Oh, Pax? You already have a pet name for your Paxious? How cute!~” Ara responds.

You cough slightly, letting Ara know that you are in fact at the table. She backs down.

“Apology accepted. You should apologize to Nazz properly too, though,” you tell Ara.

“Yeah, that seemed to really get to her. I mean, it’s obvious why, but I’m not going to push any more buttons today,” Ara replies.

You shrug that off, replying, “Besides, the atmosphere in the Master’s meditation chambers is all wrong for that kind of rendezvous. It smells like old people and it feels like the Force is watching you. Who’d want to do anything while the Force watches?”

Ara gives a genuine laugh. “You know, Pax, I’m really glad we’re friends. I was afraid I’d get put with a bunch of wannabe Jedi.”

“That makes it sound like you don’t want to be put with Jac. Which we both know is a lie,” you say slyly.

Ara goes redder than usual, staying quiet for a second before finally saying, “Okay fine! I like pretty things and he’s pretty! Is that so bad?”

You continue your smile, replying, “Not at all, Ara.”

Both of you enter the library and find seats at an empty table. You assumed that Master Beril would teach this class. Then, you hear heavy footsteps from behind, and the distinct smell of burning flesh. You turn around to find Master Haller approaching.

“Good afternoon, Initiates. You will find that I am not your ordinary teacher. For those of you who do not know me, I am Master Hallar. I will be teaching this class today. I’m afraid Master Beril will be indisposed for an unknown amount of time.”

“Master, where’d the Librarian go? Is she sick?” asks a small Twi’lek girl.

“No, she’s not--”

“She got arrested! I saw it!” yells the Arkanian boy, Claitan as he enters the library. “She’s been the secret Sith the whole time!”

Right now, you and your friends are kind of the elite among the Initiates. You're the only ones in more than one advanced class at a time.

Claitan’s words ring through the library, bouncing off every corner of the large room. Master Hallar looks at him with a mixture of shock and anger.

“Initiate, that is hearsay. I’d ask that you keep your rumors to yourself,” Hallar says with a kind of venom in his voice that you would never expect from a Jedi Master. “Now take your seat and let me teach or be gone.”

Claitan lets out a squeal and runs out of the library, deciding skipping class to be a better decision than facing the wrath of Master Hallar.

“Now, if there are no more interruptions--”

“Wow,” Ara says, “That Arkanian is a real Jackass.”

“That’s Claitan,” you say, “And I’m inclined to agree.”

Master Hallar continues, “--I’d like to start out today’s lesson with a simple task: memorize the basics of the Jedi Code. The Code is as follows: There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no Chaos, there is harmony. There is no Death, there is the Force.”

Hallar pauses for a moment. “Before you begin memorizing, is there any part of the code that you feel needs to be explained to you? I realize that very few of you grew up within the Order and might be ignorant of its meaning.”

> “No emotions? Even love or compassion?”

“No emotions?” you ask, “Not even love or compassion?”

Master Hallar seems to tense up slightly at that. It’s as if he’s stopping himself from saying something he know he shouldn’t.

“A Jedi,” he begins, “is not meant to feel those things, they are meant to act them out. For a Jedi, love is the action of saving or helping another, not the emotion felt inside. Those emotions blind and blur reality while the action itself is what will help them. Therefore, refusing all emotion while accepting the action is the path to bringing harmony to the Galaxy. A very good question though, Paxious.”

“Seems like there’s not much harmony in the galaxy as of late,” Ara comments to you. “I mean, he did just arrest an innocent woman.”

“I heard that,” Hallar says softly as Ara jumps in her seat. “For your information, Master Beril went with us willingly upon request and I am confident my investigation will find the truth of the matter. I’d ask that you leave any more questions or comments about Master Beril until class has ended.”

With that, you work for the next hour or so to get the Jedi Code engrained in you brain. You end the class reciting it together with the twenty other Initiates in the classroom.

“Good job. I hope the next batch of Initiates is as willing to learn as you all have demonstrated being. You are dismissed,” Master Hallar says, his voice sounding much more exhausted than his demeanor shows.

What will you do?

Instead of immediately exiting the library, you approach Master Hallar. He gives you a knowing look as you approach.

“Master Beril spoke very highly of you. I understand your distress at this situation,” he says like a droid.

"I know you don't expect her to be hiding anything,” you begin, “Is this detainment really a part of the investigation, or is there another reason for this?"

“Last night, I sensed a very powerful darkside presence in the Temple near the library. I asked a passing knight if he felt it too and he confirmed it. Approaching the source, we came to Master Beril’s chamber. I sought her out, explained the situation, and asked if I might search her room. She allowed me to enter and there, I found a Sith Holocron and a red lightsaber. Upon confronting Master Beril, she expressed confusion. I am doing only what is necessary. I know Master Beril and suspect that foul play is involved. However, I will not let my personal convictions cloud the facts.”

Just got here! hope we can clear Master Beril's name soon, she was my favorite so far
>>
“Maybe someone planted them there,” you say, partially to yourself.

“That is my thinking as well,” Master Hallar responds. “However, Beril claims she locks the room whenever she leaves it and it was locked when I first approached it. Someone would have either had to pick the lock and then put it back in place upon leaving, or steal the key from Beril herself. Both seem unlikely.

“Maybe the Sith want her out of the way. Have you checked the students? It'd be easier sneaking in as one than pretty much anything else.”

“The students have already been properly vented by the Counsel, with nearly one thousand possible Initiates originally being narrowed down to just the thirty-seven of your class and the twenty-six of the next class which arrives in two days time. I, however, have not gone through all the Initiates personally. Perhaps I should look through them.”

“It might be worthwhile to ask her if she stood in the way of anything a sith would want to get a hold of. Something to keep themselves out of the spotlight, something to send a message to their friends with, sensitive information that a sith would find useful..."

“I’m sorry, Initiate, I do not have time for your theories currently. I do appreciate the help you offer, but this is something I must investigate with the help of the other masters,” Master Hallar finishes, seemingly done talking.

You decide to leave and practice with your saberstaff a bit. Before you do though, you turn around and call out to Master Hallar, “Master Hallar! I just received my practice saber! We should practice sometime!” Your jovial demeanor about sparring seems to throw Master Hallar off as he simply awkwardly waves and gives another half grimace half smile to you.

Exiting the library, you decide you’ll make your way to the garden where you have ample space to practice.

As you make your way to the garden, you find Lu napping under a tree. Waking him up, you tell him that you’re looking for a sparring partner. He grins, taking out his standard practice saber and following you to a more secluded part of the garden.

You open up your saberstaff and try to remember the basics of Form 1 as you and Lu circle one another.

You square your feet and grip the saberstaff strongly, ready for anything Lu throws at you. He stands defensively, clearly waiting for you to make the first move.

Dashing in as quick as you can, you swing wide and try to strike his side. He ducks below it at the last second, narrowly avoiding your strike. Taking a step forward, he delivers a swing of his own, causing you to back up a few paces to avoid it. Finally, your sabers clash. Lu’s saber begins sliding down to your hand slowly, the blades making loud sounds of resistance as he does it. You take a sidestep and allow Lu’s pushing to cause him to fall forward where you are able to give him a quick whack with the other end of your saberstaff.

He gets up, rubbing his backside, “Hey! Go easy on the goods! If this whole Jedi thing doesn’t work out, that’ll be my moneymaker!”

You raise what would be an eyebrow, “You’re saying your cute butt is going to be your money-maker?”

“Hey, you said it was cute, not me,” Lu retorts with a smile.

You go back and forth another couple rounds before calling it a night.

“Hey, I’m headed to dinner,” Lu says, “Any chance you’re coming?”

With that, you’re alone in the garden. You sit down and begin to shut out the world around you. The endless distractions of the passed few days melt away until there is only you and the Force.

You try to concentrate but you find that you keep getting distracted. Your mind wanders to Master Beril and who would want to frame a simple librarian for being a Sith. You’d been told that the idea of Sith being on Tython was laughable, but now, in the face of Master Beril’s arrest, you aren’t sure of anything anymore.

Finally, you make your way to the cafeteria and find that it is incredibly crowded. You spot Ara, Jorraan, Nazz, and Lu at a table close by. Sitting with them is what looks like a Jedi Knight. The Knight has strikingly red hair that matches Ara’s. You realize this must be Ara’s sister Kay.

You grab food and make your way to the table.

“Paxious!” Jorraan greets you as you take a seat, “This is Kay, the sister of Ara. She is a great warrior and would also make a terrible mate!”

You notice that Jorraan has a bit of a black eye.

Kay laughs at his comment, “Haha, that’s more like it, Jorraan. Geez, Ara, where did you find this guy?”

Ara laughs uncomfortably.

“I’m Paxious by the way,” you tell her, extending a hand across the table.

As you shake her hand, Nazz interjects, “But we all call him Pax and it’s a great nickname and I thought of it!”

Kay tilts back her head and gives a laugh, “Nazz, you’re ridiculous and I love it!”

Nazz lights up at this remark, giving Kay a big smile before taking a rather large bite out of her fried Gizka Greaser sandwich.

“So,” you continue, “What brings you to the temple?”

“Well, I’m currently in between missions. As a Jedi, most of your time is spent out on the job or even at your own house if you have one. It’s nice to stop by the temple when you can though. I heard you guys are going out to fight some Flesh Raiders tonight, though! I’ll definitely see you there!” she says, looking around the cafeteria a bit. “The place hasn’t changed a bit since I was a youngling!”

Lu swallows a some Correllian taters and asks, “So what’s it like being a Jedi Knight?”

“Well,” Kay begins, “Your work is never done. There’s always someone who needs saving and there’s always someone who needs help. I’d be lying if I told you it was easy or that you had a lot of freedom, but I’d also be lying if I didn’t tell you I enjoy the hell out of it!”

“Ara’s what?” Kay asks with a perplexed look.

“I’m going too!” says Jorraan with enthusiasm.

“Who all is going?” you ask raising your hand to indicate the rest of the table to follow.

Kay, Jorraan, and you are the only ones raising their hand.

“Come on, Ara!” Kay says, “It’ll be fun!”

“I need some sleep,” says Ara, looking incredibly uncomfortable.

“So, Kay,” you say, “How’s having Ara as a sister? Is it as hard as having her as a classmate?”

Ara smiles a bit and tries to give you a dirty look, only for her smile to melt through it.

“Hah! Yeah, Ara does need to loosen up a bit. I blame mom and dad for that though. If I had to live with them full-time, I’d probably be like that too,” Kay says with a laugh.

“Yeah, maybe if you had let me sleep, I’d be going!”

You stare him down for a moment.

“Okay fine! I’ll go!” he relents.

“Well Ara,” Kay comments, “Looks like you’re the odd man out!”

Ara stays silent for a moment before letting out a soft, “Okay, I guess…”

“Yeah! We’re gonna be awesome, those flesh raiders won’t know what hit ‘em!” Nazz yells!

“Hey, we’d better get going if we want to catch the transport there,” Kay points out.
